Short-Term Running Goals:

Keep on running, enjoy it for the sake of running, relax and enjoy life...de-stress.  Stay fit as I enter retirement in  2025.

No racing, retired.

Long-Term Running Goals:

Keep running until this old body says no, running for fun.

Personal:

I started running competitively in 2005 and ran my first marathon in 2005. Now retired from competitive racing.

Bend down, O Lord, and hear my prayer;

answer me, for I need your help.
Protect me, for I am devoted to you.
Save me, for I serve you and trust you.
You are my God.
Be merciful to me, O Lord,
for I am calling on you constantly.
Give me happiness, O Lord,
for I give myself to you.
O Lord, you are so good, so ready to forgive,
so full of unfailing love for all who ask for your help.
Listen closely to my prayer, O Lord;
hear my urgent cry.
I will call to you whenever I’m in trouble,
and you will answer me.  - Psalm 86:1-7

Race to Robie Creek, Overall 8th, 2nd in AG. Went out fast at 6:03 pace, doing ok thru 4, hill from 5-6 a bitch. Levels off a bit through 7 (felting like quitting at 7 & almost walked, but kept legs moving). 7.5-8.5M the steppest I have run. Peak at 1:02:20. Down back side (4.5M) at about a 5:15 pace, passed 5 people. Bad luck at 12M as I had to stop to tie shoe, lost 15-20 sec that I couldn't make up to catch 6th place and lost momentum to stay ahead of 1st pl. women. Kicked in last .1M but when I saw finish, if I knew it was there, I would have kicked sooner to catch 6-7 place.

This comment is coming about 6 months late, but I saw on your accomplishments that you ran the Race to Robie Creek this year. I was one of those people that you passed on the downhill.

Congrats on a well run race.

That was you I saw near the top of the hill? Dang, wasn't that a fast downhill?

Congrats to you on a solid race as well.

A new PR by 5min! Overall felt great afterwards, the best after any marathon so far!  Goal time was 2:45 and I was able to beat that by over 3 minutes.

Splits: 1-6:09, 2-6:04, 3-5:58, 4-5:57, 5-5:57, 6-6:00, 7-6:00, 8-5:58, 9-6:11, 10-6:10, 11-6:21, 12-6:10, 13-6:17, 14-6:09, 15-6:29, 16-6:14, 17-6:19, 18-5:55, 19-6:06, 20-6:10, 21-6:11, 22-6:00, 23-5:40, 24-6:11, 25-6:33, 26-6:32, 0.2-2:04 (0.34M on my GPS).

This course is probably the best I have ran so far. I saw Paul P. and his friends at the start and I was able to hook up with a few guys for the first 14 miles (thanks Ted and James) which really helped.  The first half felt very easy and controlled, running great.  At 14M we hit the hill and I decided to push the pace up and charged up hoping that Ted and James would come along.  I ran pretty easy through mile 18, then came the new real downhill and let it out again and caught Logan at aroun 18.5M.  I ran well through the rest of canyon and let it out again for mile 23 (wasn't expecting a 5:40, but I will take it).  At 24M hit the parkway and slowed due to the heat, flat and crowd (trying to bust through the walkers during this section kind of sucked).  Turned onto Grant and could see the finish and started to speed up. Saved a kick for when my GPS ticked off 26M and then pushed with what I had left at about a 6:09 pace).

Welcome to the blog and congrats on a great performance! Your splits are the model of consistency...

From ArmyRunner on Mon, May 21, 2007 at 10:58:10

Jeff,

Great run. Thanks for running the first 14 with James and I it helped keep things relaxed. I just did not have it in me as I was feeling a bit glycogen depleted too early in the race. You ran pretty even splits which is great considering the heat at the end. Sasha thinks it cost everyone a couple of minutes. A sub 2:40 is well within reach for you. What are your plans for your next marathon?

From jtshad on Mon, May 21, 2007 at 14:58:48

Ted, if I continue to feel as good as I do now, I am going to try to do the Teton Dam Marathon in Rexburg, ID on June 9 (try and defend my title, though Paul has informed me that several bloggers are running and will be up front as well). After that, I am planning on Mesa Falls in August and St. George.

It was great meeting you, hope to run into you again soon.

From James on Mon, May 21, 2007 at 15:00:41

Good to see you on the blog. It was nice to meet you and it was good to run with you and Ted for the first 14. I wish I could have caught back up to you after that and we could have helped eachother out. Besides, you ran right where I wanted to be, and we now share the exact same PR. We'll go sub 2:40 for sure at St. George! Way to run and PR by 4 minutes!

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, May 21, 2007 at 15:28:53

James, welcome to the blog! Congratulations on the new PR! This is worth probably about 2:33 in St. George, yes, that fast! You, Clyde, and Kory are going to have some fun in Teton Dam.

From James on Mon, May 21, 2007 at 16:40:26

Jeff,

Sasha was really welcoming you to the blog!

From Steve Hooper on Mon, May 21, 2007 at 20:18:52

James, Congrats on your new PR and welcome to the blog! I think Sasha is right, you should be able to make new PR at St. George in the Fall.

Easy 4.1M recovery run this morning just to loosen the legs followed by a 3.1M very easy run at lunch (felt a twing in my achilles, so made it very easy).

welcome to the blog. My friend Clyde is headed up to run the Teton this year!

Welcome to the blog. I'm also running the Teton Marathon and hope to at least get a 2:50. How are the hills in the course? The downhill looks gradual. Good pacing will be the key. Our you running the Pocatello Marathon?

Achilles is still a bit sore today and the weather outside is crappy, so today is a rest day from running and instead hit the gym for a good weight workout.  Since ramping back up this spring, my weight routine has dropped way off.  Today felt good and not that bad lifting performance.

Nice easy run early AM.  Left achilles tendon still a bit stiff at start of the run, but by about 3M it had totally loosened up.  Feels great after run.

6.1M at lunch time a little bit faster (~6:42) pace.  Achilles a bit stiff again and a slight knee pain below the left patella, but not very bad.

Hey Jeff,

Sorry it took me so long to get back at you. Good job in Ogden. Teton should be fun. The course looks a lot like Boston. I'd like to run around a 2:35 but I'm not sure how it will end up. You'll be the king of the road comming back as the returning Champ!

If you have any pointers for this course I'd be thankful. I'll drive it the day before but thats not really the same as someone telling me first hand. It would be fun if there was 4-5 or us who wanted to go sub 2:40 or so. It would sure help with the pacing.

Nice easy run again this morning.  Felt a slight knee twing at start, but focused on my form to make sure my kick was tracking straight and the pain subsided.  I think my tight calf pull my form off and started the knee pain.  Think I have it under control and will watch it before registering for Teton Dam, but I think I am still looking good for that race.

Nice run at lunch at MP (6:18 avg), knee felt great before the run, started to twing in the first mile, then felt better as the run went along.  Knee felt great afterwards as well.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesTotal Distance

The day was perfect for a marathon.  I drove up to Rexburg with a friend also going the distance (at a bright 4:30am) and met up with Clyde and Kory at Madison high school.  I sat with Clyde on the bus ride up to the dam site and chatted about running, life, etc.

The weather was perfect, low 40's and no wind.  At the gun, Clyde and I started together and took the first mile easy then started to push the pace.  We caught the lead relay guy about 4M as we are now averaging about a 5:45-5:50 pace.  Clyde is running really well and I am right there with him through about 9M.  Starting at 9M, the ghosts of Odgen Marathon from 3 weeks ago start to haunt me...my hamstring starts to tighten a bit and I beginning to feel some "twinges" in my left knee.  So, I start to back it off a bit knowing that if I keep this up, I will really pay for it at the hill.  At 10M, Clyde has about a 15 second lead and is running strong.  I just settle into a 6:10ish pace that feels pretty comfortable and wait for the hill to start around 15M.  At 16M, the real torture begins and miles 17 - 19 really just suck and the pace drops way off as I just stuggle up the hill and attempt to keep Clyde in sight (approximately 2 minutes back at this point, but I can still see him!).  Mile 20 is a little better as it begins to level off and then finally mile 22-23 comes around and allows for a breather due to the downhill, which I am only able to run at a 6:07.  As we then hit the city and the flat part of town, the last 2M are just survival.  Try to save a bit of a kick as I approach the finish but can't quite hit the sub-2:44.

Final time of 2:44:05, knocking almost 7 minutes off my time from last year and good enough for second place behing Clyde.  Kory comes in strong for 3rd place!

Overall a really good run and a good test of my fitness to finish two faster marathons in 3 weeks time.  I am really happy with my time considering how hard this course truly is.

It was great meeting and talking with the other bloggers.  Look forward to seeing Clyde again in St. George (if not before...BTW, send me a copy of the picture of the two of us if you could).  Looking forward to a rest week this week, just some easy miles later in the week.  I will pace my wife next Saturday in her second 5K in 3 weeks (just started running in January!) at the big Idaho Falls race (Scenic River Classic).

Great job. You ran a very good race. I think you'll be running a 2:35 or lower at STGM. It was great to meet you and run the race with you. Have a great summer and look into the Hobble Creek Half. BTW I'll send you that picture. I just need your email address.

Thanks, let's keep in touch. My email is shadlejt@id.doe.gov.

From James on Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 14:18:53

I waited all weekend for you to post your race so I could tell you good job. I am very impressed with your performance after a great race at Ogden only 3 weeks ago. And you can't feel bad come in second place in a Marathon to Clyde "The Glide"(SuperFly). How was the overall race compared to Ogden because you only ran just over 2 minutes slower with only 3 weeks of recovery?

From jtshad on Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 14:26:14

Thanks, I appreciate the thought. It was great racing with Clyde who is a very strong runner. It was great to see Kory make it through his issues for a strong 3rd place. Another Ogden runner, Pete Petersen, came in 4th!

I am actually almost more proud of the time at this race than Ogden due to the turnaround in 3 weeks as well as a much harder course. In fact, I took almost 7 minutes off my time from last year (even trying to rehab a aching knee). So, this race ranks up there for personal effort and accomplishment and tells me that with the proper training and attitude, you really can push yourself to do more than you think possible.

However, I still think Odgen is probably the best race/course I have run so far (good org, pretty, very runner friendly PR course). Looking forward to St. George!

From James on Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 14:36:25

St. George blows Ogden out of the water in every aspect!

I guess my question should have been, do you think you could have run faster on Saturday at Ogden than you did 3 weeks ago? Because you didn't run much slower and were still pretty much in recovery time.

From jtshad on Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 14:45:49

Looking back, I think I probably could have pushed it harder for a better time. I think back and feel that I should have run miles 18-21 a bit faster than I did to use the canyon better. But at the time of the races, I didn't want to burn out before the last 3M in Ogden. Amazingly enough, afte both of these races I felt great (at least the next day), so I feel that maybe I could have pushed harder (at TDM I should have kept the pace up with Clyde longer because my knee doesn't feel too bad). So, I think to get to the next step, I need to increase my endurance training, focus on my form and add a little more actual "speedwork" to my routine (if I can somehow find the time) to lower my times.

From James on Mon, Jun 11, 2007 at 15:22:47

Well, I was very impressed, and glad that you were running a marathon instead of me. I am in the same boat as you but probably need to increase a few more things besides speedwork. I felt good after Ogden but was extra careful to make sure that I was recovered before I got back into things. The best thing I have going for me is right now constistancy in my training; plus a few kick in the butt races to help me realize that I needed to train harder. Keep up the awesome running, but first, have a nice recovery.

From Steve Hooper on Tue, Jun 12, 2007 at 15:06:08

No worries Jeff this is just suppose to be an easy week for you. I hear ya with the early morning runs. I hate them too. Your going to excel in Mesa Falls. I'm actually considering Mesa Falls since I've Pocatello marathon twice.

From jtshad on Wed, Jun 13, 2007 at 18:02:40

Thanks. I actually have grown to really like my early runs...get you going for the day and are typically just easy going runs. This morning, though, it felt like I was running hard but I just wasn't moving very fast.

Hope you chose Mesa, I have heard really good things about the race and I think it would be easier on your body than Pocatello (plus it is something new).

Good job on your run this morning as well, looks like you are getting back into your training with no problems. I hear you about the withdrawls, I get them too.

From wheakory on Thu, Jun 14, 2007 at 08:32:54

Jeff,

Just a question in your training how many marathon pace runs do you do a week? Your marathon pace is around 6:12 approximately.

Do mix in any tempo runs? I'm just curious, I'm always trying to get advice and get better.

From jtshad on Thu, Jun 14, 2007 at 09:45:11

In a normal training week (between 50-70 miles total), I try to get in two speed sessions most often fartleks or full tempo runs of between 5:30-6:15 pace. My early morning runs are usually between 4-8M at around a 6:30-7:00 pace, and my normal lunch run of 4-7M is either my speedwork or an easier run of 6:30-6:45 pace. My long weekend runs of between 10-20M are usually at a easier pace of 6:40-7:10 depending on distance.

From wheakory on Thu, Jun 14, 2007 at 10:58:45

Thanks Jeff,

I follow sort of a similar training. I've been averaging around (70 to 90 mile weeks) for just the last three months. I try to run nothing less than 10 miles a day. Monday and Wednesday's are my easy runs at a 6:40 to 7:05 pace. Then I'll run some on my lunch hour or go to the gym and do strength training on my upper body. Tuesday's I'll do speed work at the track either 400's (200 jog in between) or 800's (400 jog in-between), then I'll run a short tempo run afterwards. Thursdays I do a 6-7 mile tempo between 5:50 to 6:12. Friday's 10 mile easy run. Saturday, "like you" 12-20 mile long run between 6:50-7:10, and I'll mix in some MP miles and sometimes tempo miles. I just need to work on making 6:30 become a totally comfortable pace, which it is at times, but not all the time. Thanks ago for your information.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Jun 14, 2007 at 13:49:59

Jeff - your wife should be able to go quite a bit faster in a race if she could handle 8:30 with a reasonable degree of comfort in a workout.

From jtshad on Thu, Jun 14, 2007 at 14:27:48

Sasha, you and I know it, but I am still working with her to believe it and be able to push through for the faster pace. Unfortunately, coaching your spouse is full of politics. She was doing well this winter on the TM getting up to 5M+, but has struggled running outside keeping herself motivated and hasn't really done anything over 3.5M since. She is still working on understanding how to find "her pace" outside without me a her rabbit. She grew too accustom to setting the pace on the TM and then not understanding her effort accordingly. I will likely try to push her lower than 8:30 and see if she will follow suit and believe she can do it.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Jun 14, 2007 at 14:44:10

Tell her about how my daughter Jenny (6 years old) ran a 7:40 mile. The key for her was taking a step in the dark and believing that she was strong enough to sustain a fast pace even though it felt uncomfortable. She hit the first half in 3:55, and it felt hard, but still she managed to close in 3:45 - 10 second faster than what appeared unsustainable in the first half!

Des News will beat the living daylights out of you. It's a brutal course and often hot. Seeing as to how you're having knee problems, it might be wise to skip it. Take a look at Park City (mid-August), which you would have a chance at winning. Park City certainly not a fast course, but is much easier on the legs (lots of soft dirt paths).

From wheakory on Tue, Jun 19, 2007 at 12:15:15

I ran Des. News last year, and I really was fine after the race and had a quick recovery. But you do need to run a lot of downhill to prepare for this course and that's what I did and I PR'ed. But like Paul said if your not prepared it will beat you up, because the course drops fast from the top where you start.

I wouldn't run it if your having knee issues like Paul said. This course is worst than the Pocatello Marathon. I exactly ran the second half of the course faster than the first, but I was a little conservative on the downhill, and I'm sure that's why I did come away that sore.

Sasha also advised me not to run this course either this year, and I'm not sure if I'm going to run it. If I do I probably will use it as a training run.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Jun 20, 2007 at 17:32:59

How about run St. George in under 2:22, and then do the Trials for your 4th marathon? And if not, go to Richmond, St. Jude, or Rocket City?

From jtshad on Wed, Jun 20, 2007 at 17:38:31

I appreciate your confidence in my abilities, but dang man, a 2:22? That would mean keeping up with Paul! Small steps...I am targeting 2:30-2:35 and think that my mind is writing checks my body will have a hard time cashing.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Jun 20, 2007 at 17:51:11

Your Ogden is equivalent to about 2:33 in St. George taking the heat into consideration. So I'd say assuming no disasters during the race and between now and then, you have a sub-2:35 in St. George in the bag. 2:22 is a different level, though, and the big question is in how much natural speed you have, and what kind of speed it is. What are your best times in 100, 800, mile, and 5 K?

From jtshad on Wed, Jun 20, 2007 at 17:57:48

I haven't really done any short (1M or less) races and haven't done track speedwork (100m-800m repeats) per se. I am planning on doing so track repeats this summer with couple of fast guys here in IF that will be running SGM. My fastest official 5K race is a 17:40. In training I have run 16:30ish, so I know I could get near 16, I just haven't had the opportunity to focus or schedule a flat out 5K. We have done a 2M "fun run" for our company picnic the last couple of years...result in the 10:30 range on a hilly course.

Jeff,

We would have loved to have you on the team, but I am sure we will do many more relays in the future and maybe we can snag you for a couple of them. I don't think anyone will beat BYU, but we might be able to hang with Weber pretty good. But you never know in a 180 mile relay!

What is your next race?

From jtshad on Thu, Jun 21, 2007 at 17:55:10

I will probably run a little 5K here in IF on July 4. After that, I am still playing with my calendar to fit something in before St.George but running into lots of conflicts. Kind of thinking of Deseret News as a training run for SGM, but unsure as I don't want to get too beat up. I have had advice saying yes and no to this idea.

Very easy 4.35M run at lunch with a nasty 30mph headwind for 2.5M out.  Feet are still sore from this weekend!

I hear you on being tired. I took the kids to Lagoon on Saturday after running the Wasatch Back. I was pretty much dead to the world, just walked around with the baby stroller while the older kids enjoyed the rides.

From jtshad on Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 13:54:04

I am more tired and sore (back, feet, legs) after a couple of hours walking and standing around a park like Lagoon (or especially a mall! and in sandals or with bare feet) than after running a marathon.

Lagoon in 100 F after the WBR? Just found spots on the benches in the shade, huh? Thus one of my reasons for having to pass on joining your team.

From wheakory on Mon, Jun 25, 2007 at 14:04:20

Get some rest for those legs tonight, and that will get you a fresh start tomorrow. I hear you about Lagoon. I've been there several times and just staying around in the heat drains your body.

Nice easy 4.1M run.  Short day today as I had to get to work early to get out to the facility on the desert.

So, what is with the young kids nowadays.  Here I was, out running this morning around my neighborhood at 4:30am, when here comes a couple of yahoos driving in circles around the streets with their lights off (kinda like they were casing the houses). On their third pass by  me, they drive right at me and yell a derogatory comment at me.  What the #%$! is that about?

You are a more patient man than me, I would probably run them down. I had some punk kids run me off the road a few years ago, and I found out who they were and where they lived. I had a good little chat with them and their parents on their front porches that night. That was a time that I actually handled it well!

I am still leaning towards Des News, but I am still open to the possibility of the Missoula Marathon on July 15. Need to decide soon so I stop frustrating my wife with my indecision and affects to our family plans for the summer.

Easy paced 7M run early this morning. Very comfortable, a bit of a stitch during run which I tend to find I get more if I run in the 7:00+ pace range, I think running at this pace throws off the breathing rythm of my diaphragm.

Hey Jeff,

Mine and Paul's friend Jon is going to be in Idaho Falls for 3-4 days next week and I told him to contact you and get out on some runs together. He is about the same caliber of runner as me and you, so you guys should hook up.

From jtshad on Mon, Jul 02, 2007 at 10:06:09

I would love to hook up for some runs. Have him get a hold of me at home (523-0734) or work (526-5005). I will be out of town on Tuesday. There is a 5K on the morning of the 4th before the parade that should be fun (I am running it).

7.4M run at lunch.  Wanted it to be a tempo/threshold run for at least half of it, but legs were very heavy at the start and could only manage a moderate pace (6:43-6:32).  Mile 4 was better at 6:29 and in mile 5 through in some threshold pace (5:25-5:50) and avg. 6:17.  Mile 6 was about the same at 6:22 and mile 7 came in at a more moderate 6:30.

Still an excellent time (good job). Sometime I think mentally you drift off and lose focus where your pace is at. I know this happens to me. Maybe you were thinking of other things at the time and dropped the pace a little. What's the course like?

From jtshad on Thu, Jul 05, 2007 at 11:23:39

Mostly flat with a few very small hills. I think, like you said, I just lost focus. I was running in the front the young guns, at about 1M 1-3 passed me and I tried to pace with them, but the legs just did not have it in them. My lack of shorter speedwork showed.

From Sasha Pachev on Thu, Jul 05, 2007 at 12:38:58

If Ken Richardson ran only 16:40, this makes me wonder if the course was a bit long. He ran 17:00 earlier this year on a beast of a course featuring numerous climbs up a 6% grade for significant stretches, and has been very consistent in his racing throughout the year. In fact, he beat me by a 6 seconds in that 5 K, then by 12 seconds a similar 10 K, and then by 11 seconds in the 10 miler. He ran Moab half in 1:13:37, and then a couple of weeks later I got him back for all of those short races in the Ogden Half, and it was all after 10 miles. He was ahead of me at 10 miles again by about 10 seconds or so. So he is very consistent up to 10 miles, after than he starts fading, but he should not be fading in a 5 K even with slightly reduced training. He should have run a normal flat 5 K in around 16:20.

Was the course certified?

From jtshad on Thu, Jul 05, 2007 at 14:28:01

No, I don't believe it is certified and I know talking to Jon Allen that it was long last year. My GPS had it right on at 3.1M, so I think it was close. Maybe it was because he didn't feel he had to push too much. Top 5 places according to the official results:

1 Richardson, Ken 28 16:36.84

2 Wilson, Zeke 17 16:51.68

3 Nielsen, Alex 24 16:51.91

4 Shadley, Jeff 38 17:05.69

5 Baxter, Cody 16 17:20.51

From James on Thu, Jul 05, 2007 at 17:24:21

Jeff,

Nice job in your 5k. 17 minutes is a good time. Yeah, that Kenneth Richardson is a fast dude. As Sasha said he was beating us the whole winter training series in Ogden. He beat me out for first in our age group in that series. He ran for Weber St. and was an 8:38 steeple chaser.

How many early morning runs do you do? I mainly do them as easy miles- no more than 6 miles, usually. It is very hard to get going fast before 5 am. I usually find that 8 minute pace is normal, 7:30 is very fast, and 9 minute is not uncommon.

From jtshad on Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 16:09:10

Usually between 4-7 miles. My pace lately has been averaging about a 7:15ish (start slow at 7:45ish and work up to about a 6:50-7:00 pace, if lucky). I have not been focusing on the pace, rather just ensuring I get the mileage. I use my lunch run as my MP or, if lucky, tempo run.

I don't think anyone who can do a 4 am run is a slacker. Stupid, maybe, not a slacker.

No, leave the dogs with James- he seems to enjoy them. This morning was actually the best I had ever felt on a morning run, surprising since I only had 5 hours sleep and ran 35 miles in 2 days.

Are you around in Aug? I will be there 2 weekends and need to get some long runs in.

From jtshad on Wed, Jul 25, 2007 at 16:40:11

"Slacker" was said as tongue in cheek.

August weekends may be full for me. Aug. 4 either still out of town camping or running a half mary here in IF or John Colter Runs in Driggs (here is info on IF run if you are interested):

On Saturday, August 4th, we will host the 2nd Annual Rock Roll and Run Half Marathon. This race will begin and end at Old Butte Park (the west side Soccer Complex). In an effort to beat the heat the ½ marathon will begin at 7:00. The 10K and 5K races will still begin at 8:00. Contact Mike or Lynn at 521-2243.

I am out of town on Aug.11 and Aug. 24-26.

Nice double run... sometimes your body just wakes up with aches and once you get moving everything flows, just like car in cold weather.

Last year when you ran the Poky marathon did you push the top hard, and struggle the second half. I'm just trying to come up with a strategy. I think if I stick at marathon pace in the top half I can get a negative split the second half. I did this last year in the marathon, but I was only using it as a training run then.

From jtshad on Thu, Jul 26, 2007 at 17:28:56

with Chuck, I decide one chance I have is to push him at altitude since he said he was feeling it on the bus. So, I push the pace hard for the first 10 miles, leading the pack of Chuck, Nephi (the Poky paper had this fact wrong and gave credit to Daniel Harry and not

Nephi) and myself. Thru 10 I have Chuck behind but he catches up and gets ahead at about 11 miles. By the half, he has about a 30 second lead, but I caught him again at 15M. At this point, we are off the hill and into rolling terrain and I start feeling the results of our

1:18 split (but so does Chuck). I start struggling a bit and feeling tight, especially in my calves. At 20 miles, Chuck is up on me by about 2 minutes and the biggest uphill on the course looms. The hill, while short, was pretty good incline and killed me for a short while. As I hit the 23 mile mark, I could tell I couldn't catch Chuck even as I tried to pull my pace back down to a 6:30. So, I put down what hammer I had left and shot for the PR. As I came around to 25M, my calves started to tighten a little, but no cramp. At 26M the finish line was in sight and I just put my head down and powered (so to speak) to a new PR.

So overall I was very happy with the race. My strategy worked for a

while, but my legs gave out a bit earlier than Chuck's did (he

struggled the last few miles as well and slowed down to, but not

quite as much...I chock this up to his training and conditioning for his goal this year). If it weren't for Chuck, I would have tried to run a more even split race, using the hill to come in more at 1:20-1:22 easy, then with fresher legs try to even split the second half. Based on my training this year, if I were running I would like shoot for a 1:18-1:20 even split time. My recommendation is to try to even split and not hammer the first half because you end up paying for it on coming out of Inkom and into Poky.

Watch that IT band thing, those can sideline people for a while. Make sure to stretch it out and massage it good. Also, stretch out your butt, that is where it comes from. David Nelson and Chad Derum can tell you about nasty IT band stuff.

I have a left achilles that has been bugging me for the last 3 weeks. It sucks becasuse I am just getting ready to bump the miles up a bit but I don't dare until I get it under raps.

When is your next race?

From jtshad on Fri, Jul 27, 2007 at 09:57:14

My friend Pat Bragassa (awesome runner - 16 min 5k, world championship biathlon athlete) had a bad achilles injury that he is just recovering from. Thanks for the suggestions on the ITB.

My next race is likely the Pocatello HM, unless I make it back into town by next weekend to run the local HM or in Driggs for a HM or marathon.

Heading out today for a 4 day camping trip with my wife's family on the Selway River in central Idaho.  Will try to get in some good mid-long runs in the mornings at least 3 times if possible.   The rest of the time with be spent floating the river, riding the four wheelers, fishing, kicking back, having a few beers and just enjoying the peaceful outdoors with friends and family.

Where did you go on your vacation?

From jtshad on Tue, Aug 07, 2007 at 15:40:00

Jon, the greenbelt loop from the Broadway bridge to the HWY 20 bridge is 2.35M long (this is the main loop). From Broadway south the Pancheri and back is 1.3M. The Freeman Park loop is 1M and the connector is 0.5M one way.

James, we were camping on the Selway River in central Idaho with about 20 other family members and friends for 5 days...floating the river, 4 wheeling, swimming, playing with the kids in the river, eating too much...

From Jon on Tue, Aug 07, 2007 at 16:13:51

If I were looking for a 20-22 mile run this Saturday with 10 or so miles fast (i.e. flat, known distance), where would you recommend?

From jtshad on Tue, Aug 07, 2007 at 17:04:33

Most of my longer runs are typically out in towards the foothills (like the day we ran east on Sunnyside). The major streets are laid out on 1 mile grids, so you options can be endless. You can do the same on the west or south ends of town as well...you could run south on Woodruff or Holmes and run to Shelley and back which should be around your desired distance round trip. Otherwise, you always go do loops around the river (which I have done many times) but this gets a little more monotonous. You might want to check on the usatf.com routes page to see if someone has laid out a longer run (I seem to remember one).

From James on Tue, Aug 07, 2007 at 17:30:39

Somedays our mind and body our elsewhere, but the important thing is you got your run in. I think you mentioned you work at the site, do you run from your office on different routes or do you travel to a particular place and then run. I know it must be hot out there with no cover.

From jtshad on Tue, Aug 14, 2007 at 14:53:55

I actually work in the Idaho Falls offices, but do travel to the site about once a week and run out there on the trails. Normally, I take off from our offices and do a loop around the IF greenbelt of various distances.

I can't believe I am still feeling the hill workout from Sunday...I am hitting it hard tomorrow and running a longer 15-18M downhill tempo run with Brett Hill as train for STGM (both of us are running it and shooting for about the same time). Maybe an easy day is not so bad...

6:00 pace. He said he would do 23 miles or so, and then decide to drop out, finish with me, or try to catch some guys. He's doing it as a training run, I'm doing it as my all-out race.

At the start, it was already 75ish, so it was going to be bit warm. Splits:

5:33- Ran to the front alone and feeling good on this easy downhill

5:49 - rolling hills start, but still feeling good running alone

6:04 - rolling hills continue, hard to get into my desired groove pace (5:48 target)

5:46 - Good mile on pace, still rolling hills

5:49 - Still on track

6:11 - More of the uphill this leg and temp continuing to rise.

6:14 - Don't know what happened here, but this mile was slow.  Now I remember, I got a little side stitch and slowed a bit to help work it out before the hill.

6:26 - This is the mile with the step uphill under the freeway, short but steep and a momentum killer.

6:01 - Recovering and getting back on track, but now in town and the temp is still rising.

6:07 - No explanation, but pace slipping.

6:03 - Better mile, but had to swerve through the 5K starters (but helped get the pace back as I now had some rabbits to chase).

6:15 - Once again, a very crappy mile.  I think I got into cruise mode as I thought I was ahead by a ways and knew I would get my target.

5:50 - At just over 12M, suddenly a guy is on my shoulder (where the heck did he come from?).  Start pushing now to see what he's got.  Push then pull back a bit to see if he will surge and/or keep up.  Running slightly ahead to 13M.

:38 (5:18) - Put my head down and kick with all I have left.  I separate and he is not able to match.  Last 100 yards I have a good lead and cruise in, expected him to kick but nothing came.

Guntime:  1:18:56 (race started 10 sec. later than "gun" due to train going by start and starter waited to send us off so we could hear the gun, but timer/computer started on time).

Pretty disappointed in time (target was 1:16) but the heat and the hills didn't let me get into a good groove.  Downhills felt great (5:30ish on all downhills and they felt easy).  Need to do a bit more hill workouts in the next month to get my uphill pacing better.

3M shakeout run after the race to get in a full 18M for the day.

Thanks everyone, it was a pretty fun race. I wish the guy at the end would have showed up earlier, maybe I would have pushed more in the middle miles instead of cruising.

Thanks! How are you feeling for TOU? What is your time goal?

From Jon on Thu, Sep 06, 2007 at 10:29:42

Feeling good, though my reduced training (i.e. extended taper) may affect me a bit- I would prefer to have more miles the last 2 weeks. 2 goals- 2:40, plus ultimate goal of 2:37.

Did I hear that you are coming down for this marathon as a training run?

From jtshad on Thu, Sep 06, 2007 at 12:22:34

Your training looks good to hit your target (plus the support of the other bloggers will really help).

I briefly thought about it, but I have several conflicts that weekend (coaching both kids soccer teams, wife works, wife's family in town) and the fact that I haven't registered (the price went to $125 today! though I thought about signing up last night but knew my boss, read wife, would disapprove.

I am considering signing up for the Tri-cities marathon in Richland, WA on Oct. 28 depending on how I am feeling after St. George.

7.5M easy run at 4:30am on a cool morning.  First mile warmup (7:57), the rest between 6:49-7:00 pace.  Left hamstring tight at first but felt better by mile 3.  No stitch today!

Nice slower MP 9M run at lunch today in pretty windy conditions.  The wind seemed to be constantly swirling so it always felt like it was in my face.  Averaged 6:25, but varied between 3 slower miles (6:40-6:43) to some faster MP miles (6:05-6:15).   Overall a good run, albeit I wanted a few miles under 6:00.

Nice early morning easy progression 6.3M run from 7:40 to 6:55 pace.  Left leg a bit twingy at first (hamstring, ankle, knee) but all worked out by mile 2.

Cruise pace 6.35M lunch run today, not pushing it but not an easy pace either (call it a slow MP run).  Weird thing happened starting about 3M in to the run...all of a sudden it felt like I wasn't there running, body kind of on autopilot and my mind way off somewhere else.  At first I felt almost light headed, but that subsided and for the remainder of the run I really just felt like my body was going where it wanted.  Afterwards, I am feeling fine, not light headed and focused.  Hungry as all get out, but feeling good.  Kinda wierd out of body type experience.

We do need to form some sort of group for St. George. Sasha thinks I am in shape to run at least a low 2:30 but I am still trying to figure that out. Either way I think there will be a good group gunning for the 2:35 range that we can put together. It does help to run with a group and stay relaxed for at least the first half. Everyone says St. George is a big time negative split course so I was thinking a 1:17 to 1:18 first half would work. Sasha says if you run a 1:17 first half then this would equate to a 2:31 finish if all goes well. He says even if you crash you are still looking at a 2:35 worst casse. I guess I will have to trust his judgement on this one.

From jtshad on Tue, Sep 18, 2007 at 10:23:31

Sounds good to me. That is about the type of split that I was thinking as well (1:16-1:18) then hitting it harder after the downhill starts (easing into about a 5:30ish pace or so for the second half). I have a buddy from here in IF who may join us, can you think of anybody else in this 2:30-2:35 range we should try to bring in? James? Kory?

Great race overall!  Nice day for a race...the weather really cooperated after the winds the past few days.  Cool but not bad at the start.  Hooked up with the bloggers in the starting area.  Gun went off early (barely had dropped our bags when it sounded!).

1st half:  1:18:36

2nd half:  1:13:30

Felt great afterwards, but feel I left it out all there for this race.  Great meeting and running with all the Bloggers!  Way to go everyone.

Splits:

1-6:00  Running with James Barnes and Brett Hill.  Cold but not bad, glad I have the gloves but anymore clothes would have been too hot.

2-6:05  Easing into the race here still on the uphill.

3-5:42  First downhill.

4-5:37  Downhill feeling good so opening up a bit

5-5:47

6-5:32  Pass the first place woman

7-5:29  First GU.

8-6:35  Vejo Hill, what a climb

9-6:20  Recovering after the hill.

10-6:16  (I remembering hearing a 59:25 time at this point).

11-6:33 Don't know what happened here, but slowed for some reason

12-6:10  The end of the hills!

13-5:51  Half way mark in 1:18:36ish.

14-5:47  Drop Brett Hill and running with the 1st place woman again. She indicated a goal of 2:34.

15-5:27  Drop first place woman.  Second GU.

16-5:14  Great downhill and feeling good.  Start to feel my left hamstring...a little tight but nothing bad and it feels better when opening up on the downhills.

17-5:30  One guy passes me here (Pepi Peterson).

18-5:31

19-5:56  Pretty good hill here.  Pass 2 guys.

20-5:42

21-5:21  Nice downhill, pass 3 more guys, including first place master. 3rd GU.  Look at my GPS and see a 4:23 pace on the screen, at 21 miles!

22-5:51  Can see town and the downhills continue.

23-5:31  Feeling strong.

24-5:27  Nice downhill into town. Pass 2 guys here.

25-5:44  Still feeling pretty good and running strong.

26-5:54  Pass a guy before the turn onto 300 South, feeling great!

0.2-1:17 (5:31 pace).  Push hard at the end but can't quite make sub 2:31, but very happy with the result...right on target!

Great race, ran with James Barnes (through 3) and Brett Hill for the first half and then solo for rest of race. Much more uphill than anticipated or advertised but second half is a fast course (new HM PR of 1:13:30ish!).

It was great to meet you at the blog party. Thank you for your advice there. I hope to see you again next year!

Great job Jeff. You ran a great race. I probably should have gone out with you but at the start I didn't see you and James and was content running a tad slower as the legs were not really there for some reason. I could see you in the distance the whole second half but could never close the gap. Anyway, great race and we will have to form up some more pack running at future races and push eachother to new PRs.

From James on Mon, Oct 08, 2007 at 01:11:36

Nice job buddy! You ran awesome, and exactly what you said you would. I never lost sight of you until mile 24, but you had more in the tank than I did, and I could never catch back up after that first 5 miles. It was good to run with you for as long as I did.

Holt backs off for his post-marathon run and does ~10 minute pace. Logan and Paul don't run. You do an "easy" 7:12 pace??? Crazy! Maybe next year we can make you break 2:10 so that you will be sore enough to actually run slow after the race.

From jtshad on Wed, Oct 10, 2007 at 14:39:55

It feels better to run than to rest at this point. When I get out of bed, I am still a bit stiff, but not while running. I am kinda with Kory, wondering now if I didn't push hard enough at St. George because I feel pretty good right now. Bring on the 2:10...sorry, my legs not my head talking (I hate it when that happens).

From James on Wed, Oct 10, 2007 at 21:37:38

Not looking forward to next week...I am on an audit team for the next two weeks and next week will be slammed at work from 7am - 6pm pretty much every day.  I hate it when work gets in the way of my running!  Hope to get in a moderate amount of miles next week...40 maybe!

Decent 7M run this morning.  Left hamstring feeling better, a little tenderness in right calf and hip.  OK pace at 7:09 for a cool early morning.

Dinner at "Lost Horizons" last night was a mixed bag.  Food - really good!  Atmosphere - very eclectic but fun.  Hosts - Very sweet old couple who have traveled the world and were extremely nice!  Company - Horrible!  Kami's girl friend (birthday girl) was fine as was the other couples wife.  But the other 2 guys were jerks...making fun of the food and hosts right in front of them constantly.  The other guy, whom I had never met, upon introduction and hearing that I was a marathon runner, called me an idiot to my face because he used to run cross country and couldn't hack the mileage!  Additionally, they monopolized the conversation with talk of the legal cases and golf and never once asked about us.  Fun stuff.

You must run some pretty slow 1/2 marathons, because you can kill a 1:16!

From jtshad on Wed, Oct 24, 2007 at 09:31:19

Yeah, the ones I ran this year have not been fast courses by any means. Race to Robie Creek in Boise is billed as the hardest half marathon in the northwest. 8.5M up about the steepest hill I have run, 4.5M down the steepest hill I have run. Pocatello was just a bad day this year timewise. My PR is 1:15:49 here in IF, but I have some doubts on how accurate the course was (be the RD had a letter from USATF certifying it, so??).

My next probable race, Zeitgeist HM, is yet again a slower course with no PR expected (lots of up and down some major hills).

From Dave Holt on Wed, Oct 24, 2007 at 09:40:57

Although we all strive for "great" times, I think it is important that we run some non-PR courses every now-and-then. It keeps us, at least me, grounded.

From Jon on Wed, Oct 24, 2007 at 09:57:50

And with slow courses you can worry about how you feel and your place, rather than looking at your watch.

It looks like if you do decide to race this weekend you have a real good shot at taking 1st place. I don't think that I could turn in much of a performance right after PRing a marathon but that 1st place seems to be well within your range given 2006 results.

From jtshad on Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 16:18:39

I think I could have a shot depending on who shows up. It is a pretty tough course, not as hard as Robie Creek HM, but some sizable hills both up (which I need to work on) and down (which I can fly on right now). The weather is supposed to be nice as well, so I am leaning 60/40 towards going (need to decide before Thursday, deadline for online registration). Dang I hate it when I get this uncertain!

From wheakory on Tue, Oct 30, 2007 at 16:31:17

If you have the opportunity why not go for it. It can only enhance your training for the start of next year, and you would get the hill work as well. You know you would be the winner or close to the top.

The reason I thought I would run the California (this weekend) one, I'll be there for work. Two, get some work on a gradual uphill and a gradual down.

The half is on Saturday...I have been changing my mind all week and now am down to crunch time. Cons: Wife doesn't want to go, and now this issue, travel. Pros: decent chance to win it, good weather expected, stay with friends, possibly attend a meeting on Sunday that I am supposed to attend (but not wanting to).

From Bonnie on Thu, Nov 01, 2007 at 14:41:16

hmmmm ... sounds like the con's have it (especially since wife's vote gets extra weight). There are many races to be won Jeff, imho ...

From Lybi on Thu, Nov 01, 2007 at 14:55:22

I vote don't do it! A race like this is a perfect situation to take a warning ache from your body and turn it into a full blown injury that could set you back months. (The real tie breaker is being able to skip the darn meeting, though.) ;)

From jtshad on Thu, Nov 01, 2007 at 15:08:31

Looks like I got the OK to skip the meeting from the team leader. I was not a crucial member (only an alternate and the primary folks look locked in) so my attendance was not as necessary. Thanks for all your input.

From josse on Thu, Nov 01, 2007 at 15:48:40

I agree with Liby, my vote is don't do it. I know it is super duper tempting, it's fun to win, but is it worth the risk of injury. Listen to me, this is what everyone tells me.

From James on Fri, Nov 02, 2007 at 01:04:16

If you are that unsure then I say don't do it either. I am thinking about a 10k on Saturday but am not sure about that either. I am not as concerned about my achilles flaring up (because it is always flared up), but I am being a wuss about racing. I haven't done any short fast stuff for a long time and I think it might be pretty painful, poor excuse I know!

That 6,200 miles in the last three years is why you are kicking my butt, and running so strong. I hope to build on a few years like that and see how I can do. If you keep it up you can win the Masters next year in St. George and get a trip to Japan!

From jtshad on Fri, Nov 02, 2007 at 08:59:22

Thanks everyone...I ended up scatching the race...still kinda pissed at myself about it as it one of the last race chances of the season and second year in a row that I scratched a race in Boise for this same weekend. Easy early morning 6M run...planned 4M but went longer at a slow (7:16) pace as achilles was not too bad...still couldn't push off as much as I would like.  Probably best that I scratched Zeitgeist HM as the hills would not have been good on the achilles.  I am still somewhat pissed that I scratched another planned race...also considered doing the Tri-cities marathon last weekend but couldn't quite get travel arranged...looking at the results it would have been a likely win.

Nice day for a lunchtime run...7.1M at moderate/very easy marathon pace (6:33).  Achilles felt ok on flats, but on the hills I could feel it and felt like if I pushed any harder it would really not do well.

Not that I am an expert on the subject but I've seen enough anecdotal evidence support the notion that longevity in this sport has alot to do with knowing when to back off and avoid serious injury. You definetly made the right choice. There's always the next race to look foward to.

I have been babying my achilles for a while now a couple of days, it seemed to help some. I am glad that your's is feeling better.

I got offered a job to be the head Track Coach at Idaho Falls high School, but they don't have a decent teaching position for me to go along with it, so it probably won't fly for me. But you never know, things could change.

From jtshad on Wed, Nov 07, 2007 at 09:44:16

Hope your achilles keeps healing.

Head coach at IF? Maybe you still negotiate the teaching part...I know Alan McMurtrey (current head coach) pretty well...do you know what is up with him? I will have to check into this. I would love to have you in IF, a really running partner to train with...we could maybe push each other to new heights! Keep me posted...

Hey, you have lots of guys in Logan, I need someone to run with here in IF! Give a guy break, would ya? :-)

From Cody on Wed, Nov 07, 2007 at 10:02:51

HA! We don't give anyone away, even if we feel sorry for poor old Jeff. We like to run in a big group and stop traffic. Plus with James running with us the rest of us DON'T get mauled by animals....Just him.

From James on Wed, Nov 07, 2007 at 20:27:58

I don't know Alan McMurtrey, I just know that they posted jobs for a head and assistant coach a couple of weeks ago. I inquired about it because the pay is quite a bit more than in Utah and and the school replied with a job offer. I am holding out for somewhere with a good all around job for me, but at the same time I need to get my foot in the door somewhere. Besides, I can't live on what little savings I have for too much longer. I'll just have to wait and see.

Yeah, I am planning on the Run to Feed the Hungry 10K, and also considering a marathon in December if I can get travel arranged (TBD).

Quick training. I'm looking to eventually get my mileage up to mid 70s per week (should hit mid 60s this week). I been doing several 10+ mile runs during the week along with a long run on the weekend. Doing 10-12 miles in a single run day after day seems to drain my energy level and after three days I need a break. You tend to split your runs (morning & afternoon). Is this to get the benefit of high mileage without the stress of mid-long run every day? What are the pros/cons of doing two-a-days?

From jtshad on Thu, Nov 08, 2007 at 16:01:52

My primary reason for two-a-days is, yest, to increase my mileage with the time limitations that I have and to get the benefits of easy and MP and tempo runs in during the week. I don't have time in the mornings to do longer runs (and they tend to be slower easy pace as I just can't get fast at 4:30 in the morning). Nor do I have time at lunch to do runs longer than 7M (and this is pushing it, my boss already warned me not to be gone more than an hour, though he does support my exercising at lunch). This then allows me to try and focus on endurance runs on weekends/days off as time with family allows. By split my mileage this way, I have been able to get up to the 70-80 miles per week all summer/fall.

From wheakory on Thu, Nov 08, 2007 at 16:10:56

This is a good strategy. Because you get two different types of training per day, which is what the elite runners do. Your going to really excel next year. Have you figured out your target marathon's for next year? I plan on doing Ogden, which I did in 2006.

From jtshad on Thu, Nov 08, 2007 at 16:15:28

Still figuring out the plan, but marathon thoughts right now include: PF Changs, SLC, Ogden, Teton Dam, Missoula or Deseret News, Ashton/Poky??, St. George/Chicago/COT, Tri-cities. Other possible HM races (besides local 5k/10K) include: Robie Creek, Hobble Creek, Fit for Life (Boise), Zeitgeist.

How about you, anything besides Ogden in your sites?

From wheakory on Thu, Nov 08, 2007 at 16:45:46

I will probably do SLC, Ogden, Teton Dam/Des News, Pocatello, maybe TOU, and ST.George/ or I'm pondering about doing the NY Marathon.

I also thought about training for just two this next year (Spring and Fall) and see what I can really do. Because I know running so many even though you may few your at your best I don't think your at your peak best.

I don't know I'm still gathering my thoughts and looking at my training. I know that training hard this winter is a big key.

What a really good HM you like to run?

From jtshad on Thu, Nov 08, 2007 at 16:50:40

I have already started looking into the accommodations for a couple of the big races (Chicago, NYC) and man, the hotel room rates are OUTRAGEOUS! Even St. George, which I got for $70 this year right now is showing $180!

Cool picture, Jeff...

Great job on your run, too. You're achilles must be feeling better. James has had good luck with his achilles by doing his runs in the evening when he is more warmed up. Maybe warming up well is particularly important when to avoid aggravating the achilles.

From James on Sun, Nov 18, 2007 at 23:03:59

Warming up and no basketball and volleyball, which is killing me, tis the season!

Do you ever take days off? I just noticed you haven't had one all month.

From jtshad on Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 13:16:45

Yes, my achilles is feeling a lot better...maybe is was mostly psycho-sematic as my family didn't want to go to the race...

James, yeah I do take some days off, but am currently taking advantage of the nice weather, the legs are feeling good, no injuries (besides comment above) that have limited me. So, I try to plan at least one "easy" day per week as I keep my mileage up heading into winter during which time my mileage will likely drop back into the high 40's/low 50's.

Kind of cool statistic observed today...noted 15 people from my office out walking/running/excercising at lunch, approximately 5% of my office...man are we a healthy bunch!

Other note..took my wife to see the orthopedic doc today...see started running this past spring and ran in two 5K's in May/June, but stopped running after her knee started really hurting her.  I suggested rest, ice, anti-inflammatory...kinda of work (I figured she had chondromalcia).  The Doc confirmed the chondromalcia...due to a structural issue in her knee.  Her kneecaps actually ride at a 45 degree tilt over her knee under flexion and therefore cause a lot of pressure on the outside of edge of the connective tissue and create a quite a bit of roughing and inflammation.  Nothing to really do about it (at least for now) besides meds, ice, strengthening of the quad muscle (which she has strong quads!).  But has turned her off of running after a good start this spring.  Dang it.

What kind of aerobic exercise can you do with chondromalcia?

From jtshad on Mon, Nov 19, 2007 at 16:13:47

Based on my experience the last two years dealing with this injury at the end of the season, Kami's experience this summer and the Doc's advice, the elliptical trainer actually works pretty good because it doesn't flex and pound the knee. Biking isn't as good due to the flexion...swimming would be great as well.

My wife is really bummed about her knees even though the doctor said there is not a problem, just something to be aware of for the future when her knees hurt.  The "runner's knee" pain is getting better, but she thinks the structural issue will keep her from exercising (despite what the doc said) and getting back into running.  She doesn't want to run if she has to have any pain.  I told her that all runners experience some pain at least now and then and you pay attention to what it is telling you...and that if running is not something that she enjoys, she doesn't have to do it.  She is a monster on the elliptical and in the weight room (she takes great pleasure in getting on a machine after a guy and adding weight to it!).

Have a good race tomorrow Jeff. Will there be any competition for you in this race?

I got my wife out running again after her knee problem last year. She had to got to physical therapy for a few weeks to strengthen the knee and the quad.

I love that your wife can add more weight on the machines after a guy has finished, that's great and a confidence booster.

My wife is getting back into the running because of the way it made her feel, and how it completely changed her endurance factor.

Rip it up tomorrow Jeff.

From jtshad on Wed, Nov 21, 2007 at 14:44:18

Thanks, Kory. I don't know the level of competition...I don't know of any of the local faster guys running it, but the RD is expecting about 200-250 10K runners, so we'll see. The cold weather may keep some folks away (low of 5 degrees overnight!) but the RD is expecting approximatley 700 runners. At $25 a pop, that's $17,000 for the local food bank and it will now be the largest race in Idaho Falls (sad satistic, I know).

My wife also liked the way running made her feel (she said it made her feel skinnier and more fit) more so than the elliptical, but she is hesitant to start again.

So is your Katelyn the 8 or 5 year old? Mine is only 18 months. She is sure getting fun though and really likes running around the house. It is amazing that you've only been running marathons for 2-years and already have a win under your belt! So who showed up this year to beat you at Teton even with the faster time? You have a very FULL possible race schedule. Right now I put all my eggs in one basket when it comes to the marathon and I've already commited (at least mentally) to the SLC marathon in April. Hopefully I'll see you at the starting line. If not I usually cheer on the Desseret runners and I'll most likely go up to cheer on the Ogden runners this year as it seems like a lot of FRB guys will be out there.

From jtshad on Tue, Nov 27, 2007 at 09:55:28

Katelyn is my 5 year old (Justin is the 8 year old).

Getting more focused on running the past few years has been fun and a blessing for me. Previous to that, I was mainly focused on tennis and weight lifting (running only for cardio conditioning).

As far as this year's Teton Dam marathon, Clyde came up from St. George and got me by 3 minutes (my disclaimer is that I had run Odgen 3 weeks before...Clyde was just too fast!).

My race calendar won't include all of those runs, just some for consideration. Right now I am looking at PF Chang's, Robie Creek HM or SLC marathon, Ogden, TDM, Des News, Mesa Falls and St. George/Chicago with at least 1-2 of these likely dropping out. It would be great running into/with you this upcoming year.

From jtshad on Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 12:41:38

The worst of the lighting project is over, just a couple of things left, but they are ground level (e.g. reindeer).

From Jon on Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 14:09:59

That is what my mind is like the night before a marathon.

Are you in IF over Christmas? I will be coming up Dec 22 or so and staying through New Years. Let me know if you want to run together any days.

From jtshad on Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 14:36:48

Yes we will be in town for the Christmas holiday. It would be great to get a few runs in together. Give me a call when you get to town and let's plan some runs. What is the number where you will be staying?

Good to hear from you. Hope your time in Florida was successful and went well.

From Superfly on Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 14:50:00

Those shoes look pretty cool. Are you a big trail runner? I do about 40% of my mileage on dirt trails. However I just use regular running shoes. I find the trail shoes a little heavy and cumbersome.

From jtshad on Mon, Nov 26, 2007 at 14:53:11

Not a big trail runner, but do a little and they might be good winter runners. These are fairly light (12 oz) but the Slingblades are even lighter (10 oz). But hey, free is free. I won a free pair at last year's new year's run and picked up a pair of Crossroads...very heavy and too small..I have learned that I need to order these a 1/2 size large...I hate buying shoes without trying them on.

From Jon on Tue, Nov 27, 2007 at 13:08:46

Phone is 524-5120.

I sometimes go to a running store, try on shoes to find a good fit, then buy them online. Sometime I just buy them from the store, though. About half my shoes are trail shoes- I like them because they protect my toes and soles from rocks.

Good easy paced (7:10) 8M run early this morning.  Almost overdressed due to higher temps until I turned around at 4M mark and hit the wind face on.  Within half and hour of finishing my run, the snow started and man did it make for slick driving to work today.

Good 5.4M MP run at lunch around the river...had to watch footing to make sure there was no ice as the path was quite wet.  Pretty good wind coming out of the south made for one of those runs where you are cold going one way, hot coming the other.

There must be something bad in the water in IF right now...I just heard about some good friends who are getting divorced.  This is the 4th person/couple in the past 3 weeks alone (in the past 2 years, we have known about 12 couples/friends that have gotten divorced, many from our church!).  Dang, how can you not find a way to work hard at a marriage in which you have invested your soul, commitment and, hopefully, spiritual focus on God?  My wife is flabergasted as am I.

I know how you feel regarding friends getting divorced. It always saddens and discourages my wife and I when we see this happen in our church and elsewhere. Three of my friends that are the same age as me are already divorced.

From jtshad on Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 11:08:19

Last night after her phone call with the wife in this latest divorce, my wife was looking back at the "timeline of our lives" and was yearning for the days when friends were getting married and then having kids. Am I old enough to really be at the stage when I see friends divorcing and dying (I have a coworker who is very sick with cancer)?

From wheakory on Wed, Nov 28, 2007 at 18:33:40

You know it's all about relationship with each other. Having good communication, and having the right relationship with the Lord from both that can gets you through hard times. I think couples try to work out differences without praying or letting the Lord involved is why so many divorces happen. I don't know how I could handle my life/marriage without the Lord. I'll you can do for your friends is pray that maybe they can get back together and work out the issues.

Tonight is my wife's company Christmas party...quite an event.  The entertainment is Ryan Shupe and the Rubber Band and the owner usually gives away many thousand's of dollars in gifts/prizes even up to several trips (e.g. Disneyland, cruises, etc.).  Kami has won something at one his two big events each year for 12 of the 14 years she has been with the company.

I get that soreness every once in awhile and it usually a sign for me to get new shoes. It usually happens when my shoes are between 400-500 miles. Hope it is something simple. Mine usually goes away after several days. It almost feels like bruising when I get it.

From jtshad on Tue, Dec 04, 2007 at 14:48:30

Thanks for the input...I was kinda thinking the same thing, but these shoes usually are good for closer to 500 miles, not just 400. My pain feels more like a sharp burning when I flex the toes...hmm?

No morning run.  My foot is still pretty tender especially pushing off on it.  The middle toe is the sore one and I can definitely tell there is swelling.  I am thinking it might be a stress fracture or hopefully just Metatarsalgia.  Neeed to rest it now I think so I can be ready for the Jan. 13 marathon.  Also looks like ibuprofen and icing should help.

Probably take today off, but may do a very easy and short run at lunch on the trails in the desert...we'll see.

Take the day off. I can't imagine how a short, easy run would be more beneficial than getting some rest. If you must do something, go hit the eliptical or bike where you don't have to push off or land on that foot. A full day of rest would be good for you.

From jtshad on Wed, Dec 05, 2007 at 09:51:41

That is what I am leaning towards as well...should not have even brought my stuff today, but it is too strong a habit. I have told Dan Shirley not to let me run. Take the day off, and I would definitely not run on Saturday, because your an awesome competitor and you will push hard in the race. You don't want to have a worse condition. I would take two days off and see how you feel Friday. Your Marathon in January is more important than a 5k fun run.

From JohnR on Thu, Dec 06, 2007 at 00:11:22

Thanks for the comments on my blog. I hope your foot heals up quickly. You might consider a tarsal (sometimes called a metatarsal) pad that you can put in your shoe under your toe. That helps distribute the weight a little better. A couple of days off never hurts if it can save a month down the road.

Hey Jeff, is there a sure-fire way to tell if your shoes are worn out? I haven't been very good at tracking mileage on them until lately.

From wheakory on Thu, Dec 06, 2007 at 12:06:39

I usually can go up to 500 mile and be okay. I keep try of all my miles on my shoes. Right now I need new shoes I've never tried Saucony.

From wheakory on Thu, Dec 06, 2007 at 12:09:14

Jeff the Jingle bell run is it a flat course around Community Park. I've never actually been there. I might be running it because my wife wants to go Christmas shopping up there, and plus I support a business up there and do there Web consulting. They need me to come up there and do maintenance on their computer. I'll yet you know tomorrow.

From jtshad on Thu, Dec 06, 2007 at 14:39:32

Cal, there is no "sure fire" way besides watching the wear on the shoes and gauging the fit and feel of the cushioning. If the shoes feel "flat" and doen't offer much rebound under your feet, that can be a good sign of needing to be replaced. The shoes I run my marathons in can only go about 350 miles before the tread wears out. My trainers typical 450-550 miles.

Kory, I still might run the Jingle bell run...my lunch run was great, no pain at all at a 6:12 pace. Call me at home to let me know and we can try to hook up...523-0734.

From wheakory on Thu, Dec 06, 2007 at 17:23:17

From MichelleL on Thu, Dec 06, 2007 at 23:53:10

Jeff-Nice tempo run today. I guess the 5K is this weekend? Good luck on it if you are able to get out. Your trip should be really fun. Will you be racing it or just using it to help you get in some good base training?

Cal-I know I need new shoes when my body starts to get wierd aches and pains, and that is usually 450-550 miles, same as Jeff.

Kory-I have had a couple of Sauconys. I like them, but I have had a couple where the mesh by the toe tears on each side, so just watch for reinforcement, like a leather strip on the sides where the shoe bends.

From James on Fri, Dec 07, 2007 at 00:06:07

Saucony are the bomb! The key is to find the shoe that fits your foot. I personally like the Omni for me, I have had every one of them. But I aslo like to mix it up and try different brands. Again, it is not as much the brand as the make of the shoe, but you can't go wrong with a good pair of saucony.

From jtshad on Fri, Dec 07, 2007 at 15:11:30

Thanks everyone. My foot is feeling a lot better, I do think it was the shoes giving out.

I too love Saucony...the only brand that I have really run in. Getting these Trigon's has been great, really seem like better shoes than the Tornado's that I have been training in.

I am looking forward to PF Chang's as well since I have heard mostly good stuff about it. I put my target time as 2:35 on the registration...we'll see.

My friend who I am staying with might run the half dependin on if I can keep her on her training for the next 5 weeks and if her husband will support her in doing it (even just a go for it!).

Yes, the Jingle Bell 5K is Saturday...Kory W. is likely coming up as well. Will likely try for an even 17min finish and throw a few miles in before and a good run afterwards to get in some mileage for the day.

Ran with Kory Wheatley and Alex Nielson (2nd and 3rd respectively) and got a new PR.  Ran 1M in the lead with Alex right with me.  Mile 2 I let Alex take the wind and I followed closely behind.  At about 1.5M, he started to fade a bit so I pushed up the pace and had a 5 sec lead by 2M.  At 2.5M cut back into the park and looked back to see Kory take over second place...ran pretty well for the last 0.5M to hit a new PR with Kory coming in at 17:00 and Alex at 17:02.  Overall very satisfied with the race especially on the cold day and slushy/slick conditions.  Won some new technical gear!

0 degrees this morning, not motivated to go outside...went and ran on the treadmill at the gym.  1M warmup at 6:50 pace, 1.5% incline.  Next 5M at 6:00-6:30 pace at various hill elevations between 3.5% and 6.5% incline.  Mile 7 was a speed mile at 5:10 avg. pace and 1.5%.  1.25M cooldown at 6:50 pace and 1.5% incline.

No run at lunch today...still very cold, resting my foot (feel it a bit again) and just taking this week a bit easy.

Those are some wicked inclines.

What is your opinion about treadmill workouts? Do you think that the 1.5% setting makes those mile efforts roughly equivalent to level running outside?

From jtshad on Tue, Dec 11, 2007 at 14:08:25

Treadmills are a necessary evil for days like today. Yes, a level treadmill (0%) incline is not like outside...1.5% or better yet 2% makes it roughly equivalent to outside (for elevation changes, wind, etc.).

I figured if I am going to be inside on the TM, I might as well make it count!

Keep up your great running, you have been getting in some great runs and good mileage. The mileage is key...it is the basis for the big improvements (be it speed, endurance, weight loss, etc.).

Happy Holidays!

Good 7M run on the TM at the gym this morning...it actually hasn't been too bad getting back in there seeing friends and really working pretty hard in the morning.  It has helped the last couple of days having the MP3 player to listen to...yesterday was Def Leppard "Vault" and today "Huey Lewis and the News Greatest Hits".  As for the run, 1M warmup (6:50), 2M at around 6:20ish, 1M at 6:00ish, 1M at 5:15ish, 1M at 6:10ish, 1M at 6:30ish.  All miles at 2.0-2.5% incline.

Great pace Jeff your looking real strong.

Your pulling some fast times to get ready for the marathon. Are you running your 18 miler this weekend?

I bet you sweat to death on the TM. The ones that you run on do they have internal fans.

From jtshad on Thu, Dec 13, 2007 at 14:22:17

Thanks guys...Cal you can get there, you are running great!

Kory, I am still planning on the 18 miler, hopefully the weather and family schedule with allow for it.

The TM is at the gym and they are older models (so no fans) but the air movement is ok...and yes, I do sweat like a pig!

Got my 18 miler in today in the early afternoon under cloudy skies and 26 degrees.  I did 3 loops around the greenbelt.  First loop of 6.5M in about a 6:55 avg. pace.  The next 5.5M I ran with my friend Dan Shirley at closer to a 7:45 pace.  I then finished off the next 6M in about a 7:15 pace.  Good run, but glad that I am done with it.  At the end, I was pretty cold...I had to have someone else open the door to my truck because I could turn the key my hands were numb!

From wheakory on Sat, Dec 15, 2007 at 21:53:53

Oh Jeff! I'm glad your okay. This happened to me last year where I couldn't feel my thumb for two hours, and to this day my thumb gets colder than any other fingers first. I almost went to the hospital. I did what Jon mentioned got better gloves. Very nice run to finish an excellent training week.

Nice work on the long run, and congrats on your 5k the weekend before. That was a good time for this time of year, especially at 5000' altitude.

From jtshad on Sun, Dec 16, 2007 at 17:14:38

Thanks guys. Actually I used my new Brooks running mittens and they weren't really that cold...just two hours in the cold with little movement made it hard to grab a small object. The mittens worked really well (better than the double gloves I had been using).

From jfogg on Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 11:04:49

Way to go, coach! I was sledding with my kids during your run. I was actually pulling them back up the hill with the four wheeler. I learned that riding an ATV is easy than running, I might switch. Do you think I'll burn enough calories that way?

From jtshad on Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 11:08:21

Thanks! Were you on the Freeman Park hill...are you the one that almost ran me over? ;-) The caloric intake may be similar if you run out of gas and have to push the ATV!

From jfogg on Mon, Dec 17, 2007 at 11:11:25

No, we were out at Ucon. Maybe if I chased you on the ATV, we could improve your pace. Not sure I could keep up...I only have a Honda 500.

Great job Jeff. Hey, you are doing PF Changs? Cool! We'll have to figure some way to see you while you are here. When are you getting in? If not Changs, we'll definitely see you at RELAY DEL SOL, which is going to ROCK!

From jtshad on Tue, Dec 18, 2007 at 11:20:18

Yes, I am running PF Chang's. My son and I are flying down on Wed. night (1/9) and staying with friends who live in Fountain Hills (for the winter, they "summer" here in Idaho Falls) and whose kids are best friends with my son...so it is kind of dad and son vacation. Then, I will turn around and come back down for the Relay Del Sol. I don't quite know all the logistics of that one, but I am sure I will see you and James at one or both of the events. I will chat with you before PF Chang's to see if we can hook up for a run with you and James or something.

After dressing down into my winter running gear, discovered I forgot one thing...my running shoes!  I had taken the home to run in over the holidays and forgot to bring my locker room shoes back with me today.  So, I ran in my Rebok hikers that I wore to work today...a bit on the heavy side but they did the trick.
