early am runs by myself.  ryan needed the day off.  After studying our runs from the past few weeks, I wanted to concentrate on even splits.  This way maybe I could stay away from the 10 and 11 minute per mile paces.  Since I'm still 21 pounds above my target running weight and in the building phase I picked 9:09 mpm (4 hour marathon pace).  this is also 3/4 a 3 hour marathon pace.  I ran two legs this morning; an 11 mile and a 4.25 leg.

9:07, 9:06, 9:09, 9:08, 9:07,  9:08, 9:09, 9:07, 9:58, 10:00, 10:15 for an overall 1:43:21

I went home and had breakfast (2cups of strawberries, 3 pancakes with sugar free syrup, a bagel with light cream cheese and a cup of coffee, 16 oz water), got the kids ready for school and then went out for the second leg

8:40, 8:54, 8:45, 9:03, 2:19 (for 0.25 miles) for an overall 37:43

4:30 am run by myself.  freezing rain and 32/33 degrees.  Kind of tricky footing.  We had a mix bag of precip. last night.  I was hoping that school would be cancelled so Heidi would not have to go to work.  2 hour delay, so she had to go in at her normal time (6am) so I only got 5 miles in.  I did not run yesterday to prepare taxes.  A couple of bum days will turn a 70 mile week into a 50 mile week.

9:39, 10:17, 10:06, 10:12, 9:53 for 50:10 overall

I went back out after Heidi got home.  Her afternoon cpr class was cancelled giving me a little additional time.  9.5 miles by myself, but temps in the upper 30's, so I ditched the coat and long pants.

28 degrees and sunny.  Run with Ryan.  This is his longest to date.  Nice run just to visit and chat.  It has been a full weekend for my wife and I.  We have wanted to move out of the house we have been in for many years.  However, not sure where we want to go.  If we were going to stay in this town or move on.  Anyhow, we started looking at houses.  Went through a few last weekend and three more friday.  We found one we really like that had only been on the market for 6 days.  We made an offer on Saturday.  Two more offers went in after ours that same day.  We were encouraged to change our original offer and firm it up a bit, so we did.  After a full day of paperwork, phone calls, and banking yesterday, we found ourself in a 'highest and best offer' situation today even though our offer was $1,600 higher than the asking price straight up with no consessions.  I felt like this was the highest stakes poker game that I have ever played.

Nedless to say, a long slow run with Ryan was nice.

Almost a carbon copy of last years 10 miler. The weather couldn't have been much better. 45 degrees and clear. A little windy. I ran a couple of miles to warm the legs up and arrived at the start line just in time for the start.

Mile 1: With the wind, but climb from 459 to 488 (29 feet).  Like any race with 7,000, there was a lot of bumping and jockeying for position. I tried to stay on the centerline of the road and just fall into a comfortable pace. 6:32 for the first mile.

Mile 2: 488 to 470 (down 18 feet). Again running south with the wind. I can't see Joe Bell anymore, but not suprised by that. I feel very comfortable. The crowd is thinning just a tad. 6:23 for mile two.

Mile 3: 470 to 509 (up 39 feet). We are entering Iroquois Park. We will do a loop in this park over the next 2.5 miles. There is no flat ground here. Up and down throughout. It is wooded, so not much effect from the wind.   6:54 for mile three

Mile 4: 509 to 568 (up 59 feet).  There was about a quarter mile down in this segment which was nice to catch my breath. Then up again. 7:02 for mile four

Mile 5: 568 to 578. This segment was rolling gaining and loosing as much as 35 feet of elevation at a time. Half way. 7:01 for mile five. 33:48 for the first half.

Mile 6: 578 to 575. This mile had a very nice downhill. I thought we may be done with the park now. 5.5 mile on Garmin shows 509 feet.  By now, the crowd is nothing more that essentially a single file line trying to find the shortest route around this winding rolling road. 7:07 for mile six.

Mile 7: 575 to 469. We are leaving the park behind finally. With a lazy s-curve, we double back onto runners in the first half of the race. There is good croud support here. The wind is now in our face and will stay there til the end. With the downhill and a jolt from the crowd, I find a good stride and get a little leg speed back. 6:37 for mile seven

Mile 8: 469 to 487. We are now running on the flat. Again there are still runners on there way out. I chat with a couple of people on the way. I'm now passing people really for the first time all race. I know my pace hasn't ticked up. However, the effort has. I'm giving it all I've got now. 7:06 for mile eight.

Mile 9: 487 to 458. Not much to talk about. We are all just pushing toward the finish.  6:55 for mile nine.

Mile 10: 458 to 461: The mile is flat, but the overpass seems much harder than anticipated. I can see Papa John's stadium now. I also start to hear the announcer. The last mile is in the stadium, running 3/4 the way around the football field on artificial turf. The corners are a little tight, but its nice to be done. 6:43 for ten.  34:37for the second 5 miles.

I ran finished this race in 1:08:56 last year and 1:08:25 this year.  (PR for a 10 miler)

Not a bad day for a race actually.  59 degrees at the start.  I had not planned on racing today.  My wife has been out of town for 4 days and got home at 10 last night.  Oliver had a soccer game (and I'm the coach).  Therefore, I really wasn't physically prepared.  Legs are tender from long run on Tuesday and speed work on Thursday.  However, a friends son had registered for this race and couldn't run due to injury.  My wife had volunteered to coach soccer today, so I took the opportunity to race. (I have a great wife).

35,000 registered runners for this race.  I was starting in corral H, which was a few thousand runners back from the elites.  Its an out and back run with a lap around a famous track here in Indiana.  Lots of weaving for the first couple of miles.  Here are my numbers for today:

7:07, 6:55, 6:47, 6:38, 6:39, 6:42, 6:55, 6:42, 6:50, 6:42, 6:52, 6:59, 6:44, 0:42

5k/10k/:  21:23, 42:10

PR for a half today.  Felt pretty good today and strong at the end.

The Program: 2.5 hour run at RP + 60" to 75".

This seemed a bit of a lofty goal after a long day of track work only thirteen hours prior.  However, I wanted to give it a shot.  I set the alarm for 3:15am so that I could complete this long run before church.

What I did:  9.50 miles in 1:23:--.  Legs were a little tender and heavy and I was not mentally ready for this.  However, the morning was perfect, calm and about 50 degrees.  Not a sole out this morning.  I intentionally started out easy with an 8:50 and over the next two miles worked down to a 8:15.  However, I never achieved the desired 7:45 pace.  The morning fizzled with a 9:17 and a 4:40 (half mile).  Walked back home to shower and sleep a little more.

Race in Columbus Indiana. 63 degrees and drizzle. Race was for the Catholic churches Haiti youth group mission trip.  There was a track close by, so I started out with a 1.5 mile warm up.  Left hamstring is tender so I needed to get some heat in it. I started out about twenty feet back in the group.  It didn't take long before the field had thinned out.  Race was stacked with good runners.  It draws some talent from Indiana University which is not too far away.  Race felt good. PR by 1 second :)

5:57, 6:15, 6:12, 0:42

finished off the morning with 4x1mile with random mileage as filler.  It was also nice to visit and run with Joe Bell.  Joe has been very inspirational in the marathon training area.  Nice PR today joe.  As I have said before, any day you PR, it is a good day.

Race with Arnold my brother-in-law. Rainy morning about 60 degrees.  Actually a nice day for a race. 3589 half marathon runners. race also included a quarter marathon and a 5k.  This was the first race that I've ran that closed an interstate for the course.  The first 4 miles were on I-794 crossing a bridge.  kind of interesting.  also, the best seeding I have ever had. I was number 14.  I figured somebody just made a mistake.  I don't get two digit numbers.

Mile 1: (elevation 590ft to 840ft). Going over the Hoan Bridge. I started right up on the start line behind Ronald Mcdonald on a scooter and some dog mascot.  Lead pack went out very quickly I was showing a 5:50 pace for the first half mile while climbing.  I knew this was not my pace so I tried to settle into a 6:35 as planned.  6:39

Mile 2:(840 to 700)still a light rain with wind in our face.  settling in a bit.  6:23

Mile 3: (700 to 596 then back to 700ft) Off ramp, water stop and On ramp to head back over the bridge.  I took a gel shot and some water.  One of the runners (Todd) that was behind me caught up and I started talking to him.  He was about my age. He was looking to run a sub 90min half.  We ran together for a while. 6:37 (20:04 5k)

Mile 4: (700 to 814) Climbing the bridge. Todd is with me.  he was looking to settle into a 6:45, so we did. 6:46.

Mile 5: (814 to 8:40 then down to 700) Over the bridge and down the back side.  Still running with Todd.  Approaching the crowd down town.  6:40

Mile 6:  (700 to 593)  Todd and I parted ways as I was looking to run a little faster.  Nice kick of the back side of the bridge. Rain has stopped. 6:25/ 41:03 10k

Mile 7:  (593 to 661)  a good little hill going into a park.  a light wind has been at our backs now since mile 3.  I up the effort for the hill.  Those who know me know that I'm a slow climber.  6:55

Mile 8: (661 to 671)  Not a whole lot of elevation change, but there were five rolling hills with the last one gaining 30 ft.  Todd catches up with me and we talk for a bit.  there was a pack of 4 runners that pass us.  6:55

Mile 9:  (671 to 599) We are now coming out of the park and will be heading back toward downtown along Lake Michigan.  There is a decent breeze in our face now.  I decide to tag along with the pack that passed us.  Todd fades off for the last time.  6:26

Mile 10: (flat) The rest of the race is flat along the shore line.  6:31and 1:06:31 for 10 miles

Mile 11: 6:38

Mile 12: 6:29

Mile 13: 6:19

Last 5k 20:21

overall 1:26:52   PR!!:)

Todd finished in 1:28:11

Arnold finished in 1:33:04

AM Run:  well today's plans for an am run got blown up.  We kept my brothers kids overnight.  All of the children played well together and didn't go to bed until 10:30.  The night was full of interruptions from a severe thunder storm, to one wetting the bed, a lost tooth, and Hudson (the youngest) homesick and wanting his mommy.  Since Heidi has to be at work at 7am, I attended to their needs.  Was not ready for a 4:30 am run.

PM run:  another thunderstorm; cancelled baseball game.  That's ok, I'll run on the treadmill once we are done with dinner.  Nope; tornado warning kept us in the basement for a while, then a bad headache.  We will try it again tomorrow.

pretty much an off day.  I'm worn down from company and a late night/early morning.  Once everyone left our house, my family and I went to late mass in Brownstown, then had Chinese for lunch. We went back home to clean up and rented a couple of movies.  While the family napped I went out for a run.  The weather was perfect, but my mind was not into it. One lap and home.

Well, not what I had in mind for today.  I had gone out for a bike ride and hit a dog just as I was building speed aided by wind.  I ended up on the pavement; my bike was a garage sale.  busted my helmet and went to the ER.  No broken bones.  No concussion.  Just a huge amount of road rash.  Enough that I'm out of commission; most likely for a few days.

The Lord was definitely with me.  It could have been much worse.

29 days to the marathon.

PM run in Marquette MI.  jogged a little with the kids before their kids run.  Very cool event for them (ages 3 and 5). The first time I've seen chip timing for kids. A 1k event. About 60 to 100 kids if I had to guess.  Oliver finished 1st in 5 and under group at 7:05. Ameila, 11:35 and finished 15th.

Joe and I ran a 5k following this event.

7:30 start.  Joe Bell ran this race with me as a pacer.  Target was 3:09:59 or BQ35-39. One of Joes college friends also joined us from lexington ky.  His target was 3:05.  Weather was good.  59 degrees and 94% humidity.  course climbed a bit more than I expected.  Overall  a good race, but I missed my goal by 2 minutes.

1 through 4:  6:59, 7:01, 6:53, 7:04.  Up hill about 100ft.  feeling good and just settling in.

5 through 8:  6:57, :48, :56, :45,  We climb another 85 feet and then a nice decent into town.  Climb was gradual.decent was nice and the view was beautiful.  A group joined in with us and we stuck together through about mile 18.

9 through 12:  6:51, :51, :51, 7:04. Feeling good and just enjoying the race.  this part is flat and along shoreline drive.  Nice running in a pack.  I had the best cheering section of any along the route composed of my wife and kids.   We pass them which is a big boost.

13 through 16:  6:54, :54, :54, 7:03  Back onto Presque Isle.  A very steep climb and downhill, but they pass quickly.  This race is two 13.1 loops.  1:31:10 at the half.

17 through 20:  7:12, :21, :54, :36.  The climb is taxing me a little this time around.  However, I know that once we peak, we are aided almost the rest of the way.  Then just as we start the decent, my right hamstring cramps. I had to come to a complete stop and stretch it out.  However, my ability to move efficiently was now gone.

21 through 24:  8:20, 7:58, 8:15, 8:39  I have a great running partner in Joe.  He shuttled water to me and kept me focused finishing and working through the cramps.  I decided to take a Gu gel about half way through 23.  I had been holding off on doing so because I didn't know how my cramping would react to one.  Hindsight, I should have taken one at mile 20 and then again around 22 because with the gatorade, water and gel things started to turn around.

25 through End:  From 24.4 to 25.2 we climb roughly 100 ft then downhill to the end.  Between the crowd, gel, Joe yelling at me, water and gatorade I'm able to muster up an 8:03 uphill mile for mile 25.  Right now it is a last ditch effort to BQ.  7:10 for mile 26 and 2:32 for the last (0.29).

3:11:54

Overall a great weekend and so much fun running with Tim and Joe  We hung out on the beach afterward and let the kids swim in Lake Superior.  I would do it again.

5:59, 6:09, 6:15 for an average pace of 6:08.  If adjusted for the distance 19:04 which ties my PR

Great day for a race.  weather was good. I met Joe Bell and a couple of his friends from Lexington, KY there.  They all three had great races today.  PR's I believe.  Thomas and Tim ran the half marathon 1:10:xx and 1:20:xx  respectively.  Joe finished the full in 2:50:xx.  I was a little shy of a PR.  Felt good, but just ran out of gas early.

Miles 1 through 4:  6:23.7, 6:33.4, 6:32.8, 6:31.3  effort seemed easy. pace was a little fast.  I was wanting to try banking time which is always ill advised, but I wanted to try it.  I didn't feel I had the mileage I needed in training and would need the time for the end.  I know I know, a textbook mistake.

Miles 5 through 8:  6:33.1, 6:34.8, 6:24.9, 6:28.9.  Still a very big group around me. The field of runners seemed to be very strong.

Miles 9 through 12:  6:42.4, 6:35.5, 6:50.5, 6:54.6:

Miles 13 through 16:  7:04.4, 7:12.3, 7:34.7, 7:43.5:  My original plan is to let off the gas a little and at 15 run a 8 minute pace for about a half of a mile.  This actually worked out well because my level of effort was now too high this early in the race and there was a little bit of a climb.  I hydrated as much as possible.

Miles 17 through20: 7:44.1, 7:44, 7:25.8, 8:02.1:  I repeated the recovery in mile 18.  2:20:12 for 20 miles

Miles 21 through 24:  7:43.7, 8:21.8, 8:07.4, 8:26.2:  Legs hurting pretty bad.  I'm just ready to be done.

Miles 25 26 and .2:  8:55.5, 9:05.8, 1:34:  I really died at the end.

Overall, I'm happy with the run.  It was a good day.

Also, I'm hoping this keeps me on my toes. I will need to be in the best shape of my life to pace Jeff at 3:15 to 3:20 in the middle of a building period (no taper).

I'm very excited about the next four months.  I also am enjoying a little down time right now, but with the holiday's and lower mileage comes weight control issues :(
