-Break stroller records?
-Stay fit for a very long time. I believe what goes into making a competitive runner at age 60 is much different than age 20, just like what goes into making a good marathoner differs from a good sprinter. I hope that by taking care of my body, I can be very fast for my age as I get older.
Personal: I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I served a mission in Rome, Italy from 2015 to 2017. I eat a whole food, plant-based diet, which I believe helps my running. I like chocolate shakes on sunday nights and I will always call the Pacific northwest home. |

| | 25 min. My calves felt a little sore. I have been doing these exercises every day that I got from the physical therapist and I need to be careful to give adequte recovery. So today I still did the calf presses, but I skipped the eccentric drops.
| | 30 minutes. Felt a little pain but it went away, but I still called it there.
| | 35 minutes. Felt some soreness but some of it was in my calf. I have to make sure my calves and hips can recover as I strengthen them.
| | 40 minutes baby! Felt so good.
| | Ran with Zach. Felt alright.
| | I think I went 45 on Saturday...
| | Didn't feel great but the soft surface helped again.
| | 45 minutes. Felt it, but at least it didn't get any worse
| | Great run! 50 minutes. Only issue was my right arch, which I had arched extra to avoid stressing my Achilles yesterday (obviously not completely consciously, to use an old excuse, "my body did it"). With the pain there I obviously didn't do it again today but my Achilles was nonetheless fine.
| | Great run, my ice burns didn't hurt too bad and my Achilles' were fine, but my right in we arch was still hurting. I'll ice it and take some ibuprofen.
| | Good day. I tried to back off the pace a bit. I'm not sure how much I actually did. Surely still sub 6:50 pace. My foot hurt again, and my left Achilles felt a twinge. I'm mostly concerned about the foot though. I'll do some more research and take care of it
| | I ran hard today! One hour. Didn't get my pace. My plan was to go a little hard. This happened very naturally. Right around 20 minutes I just started rolling. I feel like runners have a mental disorder- we like to hurt ourselves. I was so happy to get back to that feeling of exhaustion and pain that accompany running. Now time to recover and get back into it next week! Let's go!
| | Ran with Zach and Tanner. It was fun. My left Achilles felt a little sore. Have to see how I feel domani.
| | Felt some stuff on my left Achilles. I was gonna go back at 8 but I felt alright and wasn't limping so I kept going.
| | 10 MILES!!! YAY!!!!!!! Felt a tad tender but totally terrific!
| | 10 miles. Felt fine. I'm not sure why my toes are hurting. Perhaps it is related to the fact that I am running without insoles for the first time in years? I'm not sure.
| | 10 miles with Tanner. A little slower. It's really hard to find the balance of eating so that I don't feel hungry during my run, or like throwing up. Hopefully for my hard long run tomorrow I prepare well!
| | 13 miles from my apartment up the canyon. 5:48 pace overall. 6:09 pace on the way up, 5:28 pace on the way back. I was definitely chilling a little more on the way out, but you should also factor in that the turnaround point is 300 feet higher in elevation than the start. So they way back felt pretty downhill. Well, I'm super grateful to be back at it! Hopefully I can put some mileage in and get a lot faster. I'm planning on running the Rex Lee Run 5K to see where I'm at in early march. I'll plan on starting workouts next week!
One other note is that I didn't feel like my body was totally crushed afterward. It was hard for sure, but I'm excited to teach myself again to really get at it. It'll come.
| | 10 miles. Felt ok. Still planning on working out tomorrow!
| | I ran towards the lake loop to begin my 5 mile tempo. I ended up deciding just to run the lake loop itself since it would be a lot more open than the river trail. However, running 5:20 pace is much different from 5:50 pace, and running the loop all on my own with the wind on my face soon gave me that feeling you get the first time you work out in a while. So I decided to make it a 10-5-3-2-1 fartlek instead, though I cut out the one to avoid hurting my Achilles. I don't have a pace, other than that my first mile was somewhere around 5:06, but I felt a whole lot better on the 5-3-2 than the first ten once my body started getting used to it and I got out of the wind.
| | Uh oh, achilles didn't feel so hot. Tomrrow I'll either do a light workout on the intramurals, just run easy, or go to the gym.
| | Felt some hot Achilles pain so I went on a 25-30 mile bike ride up Provo canyon (past the turnoff for aspen grove- I just had an idea- that would be so much fun to bike up to Timp caves. Hopefully someday someone will do that with me). Maybe I went for a fast workout a little too soon.
| | 30 minutes. Didn't feel amazing to be honest. We'll see how I feel Monday.
| | 36 minutes. Felt good, as expected. Hopefully it gets even better tomorrow as opposed to regressing as it has the past two Monday/ Tuesdays.
| | 36 minutes. That's a success considering what has happened before on Tuesdays. It was definitely thanks in part to running on grass. It's incredible how much better that is on my Achilles.
| | Didn't feel half bad. Interesting how I still can't do heel raises per niente essentially without pain, whereas I used to be able to do lots when I wasn't even running. I feel like there might be two seperare issues, one of which was taken care of well by taking out my inserts, etc. and the other is still there. But then again, if I keep on being able to run longer while feeling looser, I don't feel a need to change anything.
| | 47 minutes in the snow. Didn't feel quite as good as yesterday at times and might have been limping a bit, but in the end I felt good and even sped up a little bit.
| | 54 minutes. Hmm. Felt about the same as yesterday. Feels kind of like I'm not using my Achilles on the liftoff, but that I'm just lifting my whole leg off the ground. I should probably ask the doctor.
| | 64 minutes or so plus some elliptical. Didn't feel perfect but I was able to definitely pick it up a good amount. Yay!
| | 63 minutes. Felt good, as I expected. Didn't overdo it.
| | Didnt end up going as quick as I had imagined because of how my Achilles felt, and the mud. But that's ok! I'm feeling pretty good.
| | 9 miles, felt ok. A little tired and sore, which I like! Hoping to beat this Achilles problem
| | Provo river trail. Felt alright. Picked it up at the end because surprisingly I had actually gone out faster than I had been coming back.
| | Still felt a little sore, probably in part I think my hips have been compensating for my weak Achilles. On the bright side, today I started doing eccentric heel drops on the calve press. Since it was hurting to do even a few on the stairs, my physical therapist recommended starting with less weight and building up on the calf press. I did 70 pounds and it worked quite well!
| | Wait what... Do I need to recalculate? I didn't even feel that insanely good. I meant to run 12 miles but apparently ran 12.9 at 5:40 pace... Holy chipotle. This is exciting. Goal for next week is to get stronger, still no workouts yet. Don't want to hurt myself again. Woohoo! This is exciting! (5:54, 5:26 pace)
| | Felt good. My Achilles felt a lot springier today which is good.
| | Felt solid. I'm not all the way recovered for sure but I'm getting there. The three miles I checked my pace on were about 6:20 average. That would be really bad on a real recovery day, but I decided that this week I could run a little quicker in tuesday/ Thursday in anticipation of real workouts.
| | Didnt feel much better today. Moved up to 90 pounds on the eccentric drops but that was hurting a bit.
| | Made a concerted effort today to keep it to 7 minute pace as I didn't feel great yesterday and I was running on more pavement today. I think I did a pretty good job. I'm not sure how I would have felt bad I run faster, but I was feeling pretty good.
| | Felt pretty good. I think taking it easy yesterday helped. I had some GI problems near the beginning but thankfully they went away!
| | Well, you can't win them all. I'm really excited for when I can do competitive workouts other than long runs. I'll try to start that next week. 14 miles on a cold, stormy day. I tried to go out at a much more modest pace this time. 5:50 average, with 5:28s on the way back and 6:12s going out. My hips are feeling the burn right now. That being said, I'm really grateful to have gotten in another week with solid mileage! Still felt the Achilles but as I've seen in the past, it went away toward the end.
| | Little over 10 miles. I'm feeling more comfortable running on pavement, but at the end of the day the tightness is still there. I'm planning on doing a light workout this week or maybe instead just upping my mileage to 70, since running slow doesn't seem to be a problem.
| | Good run. I'm not all the way better, but I felt strong doing 90 pounds on the eccentric drops on the calve press.
| | Still felt it, but at least these days I feel fine running on concrete.
| | AM: My first morning run in a long time. It was dark outside and a really enjoyable experience. It's hard to describe, but I really liked it.
PM: 10 miles on a nice rainy day. It's a miracle I made I through all this and then was able to do heel raises afterwards (90 pounds) and have it go fine!
| | 15.3 miles up the canyon. I had wanted today to be really chill after a tough week. It was going alright for the first half. To be fair, I had left some room in my mind to run faster if I felt good. I did the first half in 48 minutes (6:16 pace). I probably sped up a bit when I wanted to "check my pace" once I got in the canyon. Soon after I turned around, I saw in the distance some long boarders I had passed on the way up. Most times, I quickly pass other runners. Fast bikers will pass me. But these guys were going the perfect pace that I was barely inching up on them as I ran. So I pursued them, ratcheting up the pace as much as I felt comfortable. I was even running with them for a few minutes before they finally took a different route around Tucano's. At that point, I slowed a tad but it was too late to go back to easy running. I kept telling myself just not to go to the well. I did feel pretty crappy afterwards but it was more I think a) my breakfast wanting to come up and b) me not being used to 15 miles right now. That was 42 minutes on the way back, or 5:29 pace. 5:53 pace overall.
| | Little over 10 miles going out and then back on Carterville. I should look that up. But I just really like the route. It feels super easy for some reason. Felt prettt solid, I'm planning on a light workout domani!
| | Wow! Nice day for a WORKOUT! So far I feel pretty good. We'll see if over the next couple days I stay this way. I went to the intramural fields for the grass. Plus I don't mind the fact that I don't know my exact pace for this first workout. I think the soft surface really helped. 5 by 2:30 with 1:1 recovery. It's hard to tell without cones, but I think I started a hair slower than 5 minute pace and finished a bit faster. It was tiring, but each one was faster than the one before. It's like my body is "learning" to run fast again!
| | This is probably the first time I've actually run 7 minute pace in a while. I just ran around on a grass field and then Kiwanis park because my Achilles' weren't feeling too hot. I mean, I should be grateful that I didn't "rip it open" like I did last time the day after a workout. Perhaps had I gone 10 miles on the road and done weights it would have. I just hope to be able to recover by tomorrow. That'll be way better than starting from scratch like I did in February.
| | Yikes. I ran the carterville loop, finishing at the fieldhouse. My left heel felt some pain right at the base that went on and off. It was mostly eccentric pain. So I did concentric lifts. We'll see how I feel tomorrow.
| | Yep, I didn't run. Just elliptical. The glimmer of hope is that the heel drops went well. I literally only did 50 pounds on the eccentrics. I plan to do those really agressively and hope to be back with it quickly. This time I will make sure I can easily do bodyweight drops (150 pounds) before I do a workout.
| | 20 minutes. Not that I felt fine, but that was about as good as I could have expected it to go! 90/70 weights
| | 17 minutes. Pain didn't go away. 90/70 weights
| | 25 minutes, didn't feel so bad. 110/90
| | 44 minutes. Felt sore on both sides, but it went about as well as it possibly could have. It's been a quick recovery. 130/110 weights. I really hope to rid myself of this for good by the end of finals since I won't have access to the gym after that.
| | Definitely still there, but not a bad day at all. 53 minutes.
| | 60 minutes, fast and strong. At times I nearly forgot I was injured. Mostly my calves and Achilles just felt sore, especially on weights. On the concentric ones my left calve was shaking all over the place, it was kind of weird to watch (130/110).
| | 65 minutes. Didn't feel incredible, hopefully I'm getting better.
| | Holy cow it was pretty windy. Felt some tightness on both sides. I really want to be good by the end of school!
| | 13 miles at 5:55 pace. Didn't mean to go fast, it just sort of happened.
| | One of the windiest days I've ever run. It was a good idea to wear sunglasses! I ended up with dirt on my face, in my teeth... Achilles were both sore. Hmm. 130/130
| | My legs were slapping the ground a bit. Not super healthy.
| | Really don't know what happened on Tuesday. I felt alright during the run but overnight things got a lot worse in my Achilles. Today I was back at it. I wanna be ready to workout by June. But I can wait longer if needed.
| | 21 minutes. Kind of hurt.
| | 26 minutes. Pain was on and off.
| | 31 minutes. My new shoes felt good! I'm excited for them. I hope the additional cushion will make a difference.
| | 37 minutes. Hurt more than I was hoping.
| | 40 min. I went in the morning so I could get to work later. It was pretty sketchy. Normally the past few mornings my Achilles has hurt pretty bad just walking. I made it, and it got better later, but I'll have to be careful.
| | Rather miraculously felt good today, notwithstanding the fact that after my run yesterday morning I was on my feet all day at 10 hours of work. 45 min. A common feeling of numbness as I didn't run my full range of motion to protect where I'm injured, but not nearly as bad as it could be.
| | 49 minutes in the morning. Thankfully, I felt pretty darn good for it being a morning run.
| | 52 minutes. I didn't have to go in the morning for work, but I decided to anyway. Hopefully that wasn't a bad choice. It hurt at first but the pain mostly went away.
| | Its still there. But no complaints.
| | 60 minutes. I'll see how things go after my weekend break and next week perhaps, but there's a small concern in my head that I am not getting healthier running for an hour plus at the speed I am going. My goal is not just to "survive", I want to get healthier.
| | I really disciplined myself to go slower. It was hard, but I might try it again tomorrow and hopefully I will see benefits from it. 66 minutes.
| | Same as yesterday. No huge differences yet but yesterday I felt good enough to play knockout for the first time in forever, so that's good.
| | No complaints. 66 minutes.
| | Yesterday I went to Runner's corner to get new shoes. Awesome place. Their price matching policy is incredible. Very knowledgeable staff. I ended up going for Saucony Ride 10s. They are kind of ugly compared to the tempos. And I love how you don't even feel your feet when you run in the Tempos. But they have more padding so I'm hoping they will work well! This morning was alright, a little pain on the right side today.
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 9.00 |
| | 66 minutes. Didn't do weights cuz my right Achilles was feeling a little strained.
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 9.00 |
| | Like usual, it hurt right off the bat, and then mostly went away, although I was checking myself the whole time because I was concerned about both sides. 6:30s ish on the way out, 5:40s on the way back.
Adi-zero Tempo 9 Miles: 12.00 |
| | Didnt feel too great on either side. Maybe cuz I didn't sleep very well last night.
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 9.00 |
| | Felt better today. Still tried to keep it pretty slow. Yesterday I signed up for the freedom run!
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 10.00 |
| | Ran up in the mountains which made it a little harder, and then I never really settled down. Oops. 65 minutes.
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 9.00 |
| | Good run. I didn't sleep super well last night (someone accidentally turned on the heat haha) and I played ultimate frisbee yesterday (in my church clothes! Long story) so it was nice that I was able to run without problems. 70 minutes.
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 10.00 |
| | 9 miles.
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 9.00 |
| | 12.9 miles. 6:12s on the way out, 5:25s on the way back. Should be noted that my first couple miles were pretty slow as I warmed up, maybe like 7:20 pace. Pretty soon after that I dropped it down quite severely to six minute pace or faster. 5:49s overall.
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 13.00 |
| | Hmm. I could feel my right side was tender at certain points. I'll try to be careful and avoid a big problem.
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 10.00 |
| | Because of how I felt yesterday and this morning, I chose to take it easy and do eliptical. There's probably over a 50 percent chance that I could have run 9 miles and be fine, but I can't afford to take risks like that.
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 1.50 |
| | Felt kind of cruddy. It's good that I stopped when I did, because I was limping a bit to avoid hurting my left side.
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 6.00 |
| | Lot better than yesterday. 51 min
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 7.00 |

Adi-zero Tempo 9 Miles: 9.50 |

Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 9.50 |
| | 70 minutes. Didn't feel up for weights though
Adi-zero Tempo 9 Miles: 10.00 |

| | Same as yesterday.
Adi-zero Tempo 9 Miles: 9.00 |

| | Because of my new job at the MTC, I've been very busy. I wasn't able to run until 8:30 or so after institute. Because I was feeling very loose (as it was late in the day instead of morning) and I was trying to get my run in and then get to the gym before it closed at 10, I ended up going much faster than I should have. Hopefully it doesn't come back to bite. Miraculously, I got to the gym at 9:57 and was able to do by eccentric (110) and concentric (130) drops.
Adi-zero Tempo 9 Miles: 10.00 |
| | Thankfully, I felt well today. Ran pretty slow. I felt a little tired after running 19+ miles in 12 hours, but mostly I felt a little cruddy today because of dehydration. It is so hard to stay hydrated! I gotta stay more on top of that.
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 9.00 |
| | 9 miles. In wondering why I still don't feel better, I'm thinking maybe I need to turn down the mileage and do no more than 9 a day.

Freedom Run (6.214 Miles) 00:32:23, Place overall: 3, Place in age division: 3 | | Uh, I'm not sure what just happened. A while back I signed up for the Freedom Run, expecting to be healthy by this date. Sadly, as the day approached, I was not. Yesterday I picked up my packet with the shirt and socks and stuff and I figured I'd just jog the race and get some of the free food afterward, which is always really good. I should have known myself better. My goal was to start out slow and then finish a little faster, like I would during some of the long runs I did earlier this year without hurting myself. I figured if I felt good, I could run 36, but I might need to run slower, like a 38 or 40 if it started hurting. When I got to the starting line, I didn't see anyone who looked like they were about to drop a 31 flat like the winner did last year. I thought "maybe even if I Run 36, I could still get top 10". The race started and within a couple minutes, I was in the top group. Perhaps it was adrenaline, but I was feeling just fine and dandy when we hit our first mile, which had been uphill a bit, in 5:20. Mile 2 was at 10:30. At this point it had slowed and I thought I could maybe even win it, though I certainly wasn't going to make a move. Mile 3 we hit on University running on the flat in 15:35. Then came the uphill. By mile 4 I was feeling it. People started dropping, but I was able to hang with the top 2 until the end. I got third in 32:23. The winner ran 32:21. Afterwards I looked up who those guys were, and one ran at Footlocker nationals last year while the other ran at NCAA nationals last year for USU. So I felt pretty good about myself after having run just two workouts in 2018! In 2014 when I first walked on at BYU I ran this race in 35:51. So that was kind of surprising. Tomorrow I'll just bike and hope I don't hurt myself!

| | Felt decent. But I always struggle to recover 100 percent. What more can I do? Getting rest, icing, elevating, running slow, using better shoes, lifting weights and a number of other things which I've done less consistently haven't fixed it. Tomorrow I'll be getting a pair of compression socks. If those don't work, we are considering a medical procedure called PRP.

| | Smoky day from the fires. But then it got better. So I ran around the indoor track and then eventually decided to run outside. Right side was not feeling amazing.
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 10.00 |
| | Treadmill run because of the smoke. Of course on treadmills you can be running a light jog and it will say "4:20 pace" or you can be totally hauling and it will say "8:30 pace". I just tried to run what felt right. Didn't feel perfect but I did a couple strides afterward.
Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 10.50 |
| | Really nice run on the river trail, 67 minutes and then three strides at 90 percent. I didn't feel like I could do a whole workout yet but that felt fine. Strength.
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 10.00 |
| | 71 min. Office park loop. I thought that maybe I need to shift more Gradually into workouts, so I would do a bit of a fartlek. I ended up doing three hard sections of one minute each. The third one I quit a little before, I hope I didn't push too hard.
Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 10.50 |
| | Ran in Orem along the bike path there. I'd like to go back. It would be great for tempo runs and you can run along the gravel on the side for easy days. After yesterday I felt a little rubberbandy/ floppy on the right side.
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 10.00 |
| | Not sure how to describe how it felt today. I think it is inproving though. Perhaps I should start building up by gradually doing longer portions faster, like 6 minute pace, then 5:30, etc.
Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 10.00 |
| | Alright.
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 10.00 |
| | Typical long run where I get up to "hardish" pace by halfway to halfway. Thus it was a pretty hard effort. I wonder why I can always do that. Maybe I need to implement that in my training and do other hard efforts as buildups rather than immediately going to 5:10 pace.
I think it was about 5:48 pace overall.
Saucing Ride 10 Miles: 12.50 |
| | New socks, new shoes, and I am grateful to be ready to implement my new game plan by degrees. It went well for today but we'll see tomorrow how it really went. Went to Murdock canal trail to run my only "workout" of the week, a progression run. I have a long way to go but it was a good start. Not including the warm up and cool down, my miles were: 5:31, 5:27, 5:25, 5:14, 5:10. Average: 5:21.
Saucony Ride 10 Blue Miles: 10.50 |

| | Uh oh. This is very reminiscent of the last couple times I tried working out. I only went 56. Hopefully I'll be ok tomorrow.
Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 8.00 |
| | I definitely was feeling it today. But at the same time, I may have been able to get over the hump of doing a workout and then having to revert back to elliptical. I'm not planning on doubling tomorrow, but I think I'll still be able to run. We'll see. 63 min of loops at Kiwanis park. Probably pretty slow but that grass really slows you down.
Saucony Ride 10 Blue Miles: 9.00 |

| | Wasn't perfect but it felt better. Glad to have been able to rebound without losing too much mileage.
Saucony Ride 10 Blue Miles: 10.00 |

| | 5 miles in the AM. 10 miles in the afternoon. Didn't feel too bad. I started getting that exhausted feeling where I get really hungry, but that's way better than being injured eh.
Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 5.00 | Saucony Ride 10 Blue Miles: 10.00 |
| | Well... that was something. I think 28 plus miles in two days took a tole cuz by the time I turned around I didn't accelerate much more. I almost made it to the water fountain. My Achilles wasn't do amazing near the end either but it's Saturday so I finished it off, albeit slowly because of how tired I was. My feet felt like they were really slipping around in the Pegasus', so I tied them up a little higher just now.
ADAM MADE VARSITY!!! 18:09 at PRENATS!!!!
Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 13.50 |
| | I felt like I was slipping around less with my shoes laced up today. I think my body is not only rested but adjusting as well because I did 10 miles (and two strides) today and it didn't feel taxing hardly at all. Aerobically a bit, but there was no fatigue hardly at all. My tendon did fairly well.
Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 10.00 |
| | I was really winded today- literally. I had planned on doing a cutdown (six miles going from 5:50 to 5:00 or so). I even paced my warm up miles. I really tried to do it the way I had planned. But I didn't notice that it was quite windy, but that once I started running, the wind seemed to disappear. Every runner knows that on a windy day when you can't feel anything it's because the wind is at your back. My first mile was 5:34 and it felt amazing. I decided to run about the same for the next mile- I hit 5:32. Its hard to say because I know sometimes I overestimate my ability to hold a pace, but I felt so good. Then I turned around for the rest of the run. Wind was blasting my in the face almost the hole time. When it wasn't I would sometimes "forget" to speed up, so I don't think I gave it my all, but I do think if I could have been consistent without wind my time would have been much faster. Anyway, my splits afterward were: 5:35, 5:33, 5:31, 5:26. Oh well. Hopefully tomorrow goes well!
Saucony Ride 10 Blue Miles: 11.00 |
| | Went to Kiwanis again. I had planned on doing 9. It's hard to remember how I felt last week exactly but I want to say I felt better than last week! I'm planning on doubling tomorrow at the current rate.
Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 9.00 |
| | AM: 5 miles, a little sore achilles.
PM: Wow, this actually felt really good. I was pushing it a little much (6:27 pace or so while running it mostly on grass) which I tend to do on the provo river trail. But I'm excited, to feel this way after pushing it as much as I have is awesome!
Saucony Ride 10 Blue Miles: 15.50 |
| | I feel kind of bad for stopping at my friends tailgait. Oh well. Despite me not feeling amazing (and a newer pain that seemed less threatening in my lower and upper rather than middle parts of the tendon), I was surprised to start running again and not feel sore.
Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 10.00 |
| | I ran out to the airport for the first time. That road that goes around the airport is really straight and no one is out there. It's almost boring. I'm not sure if I'll do it again. Averaged 5:55 miles. I felt pretty tired and slow. Hopefully I am capable of more than this but it's just that my body is adjusting to the higher mileage. I didn't speed up much, it was probably 6:30 for the first couple miles, then a 6:10, and then 5:44s the whole rest of the way (that was my average coming back).
Saucony Ride 10 Blue Miles: 14.00 |
| | 11 miles including 3 strides. Felt tight at the beginning but good for most of the run. STAY CALM SQUAD I AM BACK IN BUSINESS :)
Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 11.00 |
| | Another workout in Orem. Not to be a baby, but I might stop going there since this time I felt like I was running into the wind the whole time! Maybe it's just the stormy weather. I didn't run as fast as I had wanted, but I am not (overly) concerned since I had a similar issue in my summer 2014 and 2017 training blocks where I would just stop getting faster for a few weeks. Both seasons ended up being successful for me however. So I will be patient. Goal was: 3 by (5:40-5:45 mile, 5:00 mile). I ran 5:36, 5:13, 5:46, 5:12, 5:45, 5:08. I felt like at 5:45 pace I was recovering very slowly, but (aerobically speaking) I was recovering, which was good.

| | I felt kind of like garbage on my run today in St. George. Sweat was getting in my eyes, I felt tired and my calcaneal tendon (proper anatomical term) was hurting. I could see into Arizona and last night accidentally drove there.
Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 10.00 |
| | Today was one of those rare occasions where I overestimate my mileage. I shouldn't complain, I had an awesome run. I got back from St. George and immediately left for a cold, windy run at 7 pm or so. Coincidentally, it was the third time in a row when I just happened to run past the stadium during a football game. Anyway, I had really not been pushing it for most of the first miles, and I guess I forgot about that, because I turned back earlier than I should have. I was only going 6:34s on the way out. Then on the way back I just felt awesome. Lots of energy, I think I had the wind at my back, it was great! 5:22s. 5:58s overall.

| | I feel like I might be a little lighter now. That's good. It might take a few more weeks to get down to where I need to be using this method. Today I planned to do a 7 mile "power" run along the river trail . The past several workouts though my first mile has been in the 5:30s so when I went out in 5:08 I thought "uh oh" and kind of reverted into "go hard until you break" mode. Miles 2-3 were 10:25. Miles 5-6 were 10:34 (I stopped to go to the bathroom real quick at halfway). I could've done all 7 miles but decided just to accelerate near the end and call it there. Hmm. 5:13 pace. Still a really good improvement.
Saucony Ride 10 Blue Miles: 12.00 |
| | Hmm. Grass loops at Kiwanis. Didn't feel amazing. Reminder that I need to be careful as I step down the pace over the coming weeks as I get faster but particularly as my workouts change and involve running at faster paces.

PM: 10 miles.
I think I felt a little bit better today. Hope to see continued improvement.

| | Ran Carterville with the boys again. Still not where I'd like it to be so I didn't do strides. Hopefully I can get a good weekend of rest and then pump it next week.
Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 11.00 |
| | Wow. That's one of the most grueling runs I can remember. I just felt tired pretty much right from the getgo. With the wind blasting out of the canyon on the way up, I was exhausted. Then on the way down I sort of went into a subconcious state where I told my legs and arms to keep moving and then just checked out. Near the end my vision started getting weird and I was battling to maintain what I'd guess was 6 minute pace. Oh well. At least I have a long time to recover. These things happen. I ran 48 minutes out, 42:30 back for 90:30 overall but I was just estimating 15 miles so it may not have been exact.
Saucony Ride 10 Blue Miles: 15.00 |
| | I didn't feel amazing today, but for some reason I decided to do strides and felt fine. It was a beautiful rainy day. I saw a double rainbow. This was my first time running down south and then out to the airport (I turned around right there at the airport). This was also my longest "easy" run ever. I tried to be careful not to push the pace.
Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 12.00 |
| | We Did a 5-4-3-2-1 Farrell with rest equivalent to whatever we'd run next. I was pretty nervous since it would mean I'd have to run fast in order to get a good workout. Isaac and I made a plan this morning to just do long stuff and work on my lactate threshold for a couple months. So this workout kind of surprised me. Anyway. I planned to go out in 5 minute pace. First 5 minutes was 4:56 pace on the track. After that I ran on the grass. Somehow I was able to make the workout decently hard. Idk how fast I was going, since the fields can be super deceiving. But if I had run just as hard on the track it would have been pretty fast. I hope Derek just had a bad day because he dropped off pretty hard partway through the four minute one. Aidan did his own thing.
Saucony Ride 10 Blue Miles: 11.00 |
| | Ran almost the whole thing at Kiwanis. As monotonous as that is, I think this may be something to continue even when I am fully recovered. It just encourages me to run slowly. You can still get your heart rate up decently high because of the hills and grass but in reality you are going really slow. The opposite of this is the Provo river trail. For whatever reason, when I run there, I feel a need to run super fast (note that this is where I run the first day I felt my injury a year ago). Anyway, it felt pretty good. Better than last Wednesday for sure. I was concerned that because of the fast pace yesterday it would be worse, but maybe the short overall length of the workout (only about 3 miles hard) and the fact that it was Mostly grass helped.
Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 10.00 |
| | AM: Beautiful warm cloudy weather, I felt a bit tight though.
PM: Felt great!!!! Didn't really feel any pain and I thought I was going slow but I was actually moving pretty quickly.
Saucony Ride 10 Blue Miles: 16.00 |
| | This was a little more taxing than I had hoped, both for my Achilles and my body in general. Oh well. Hopefully I am ready to go tomorrow morning! 3 strides

Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 12.00 |

| | What a day and what a week! This is my last week of continual two month long increase in mileage. I am very grateful for this blessing! (Next week I will go down to 75 miles or so before pushing up again). I felt pretty slow at the beginning. I'm not sure what happened but although I felt tired, I never "fell apart" and I ended up going pretty fast. It was no slower than 5:55 pace overall but my have been down to as low as 5:40 pace. I purposely don't find these things out sometimes. I get too competitive with myself. Last night I felt a tweak in my LEFT Achilles which was weird and not good. Today I was reminded of it, but I hope not will be better by Monday!
Saucony Ride 10 Blue Miles: 16.00 |

| | 11 windy miles including three pretty fast strides out by the airport. Didn't feel amazing but it was better than last Monday.
Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 11.00 |
| | Well, I didn't break any records but if I'm patient I'm sure it'll keep coming. My watch actually got so many laps that it stopped recording them. But I was able to accurately record the following: 75, 75, 74, 75, 75, 75, 76, 76, 75, 75, 75, 76, 75, 76, 75, 68. Those were 400s punctuated by running from the finish line to the 400m start of lane 8. For the first half of the workout it was a brief jog and then I started again: 12-14 seconds. By the end of the workout, it creeped to 15 and eventually 20 seconds as I went really slowly.

Saucony Ride 10 Blue Miles: 11.00 |

| | 10 miles at Kiwanis. It's wintertime now! Felt pretty good.
Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 10.00 |
| | AM: 5 miles. Felt fine.
PM: Office park loop. I ran a fartlek of 5 minutes off, 2 minutes on. Since my warmup was nearly 4 miles, I actually only got in 10 minutes of hard running. The idea was to get my body accustomed to running at faster paces, since I think I have good aerobic capacity but don't have speed yet, and also to remind my body what it's like to run two workouts plus a long run every week. In a way it was hard, in other ways, it felt super easy. Hopefully my achilles and body in general can recover quickly and get faster.
Saucony Ride 10 Blue Miles: 16.00 |

| | Oops. I ran bonneville shoreline today. I miscalculated and ran farther than I wanted to. On the bright side, it was a gorgeous day and a nice run. It probably won't be very runnable here very soon, but when Spring hits, I'd like to run that more because it's nice to shake it up (went by really fast) and it's a good aerobic workout on those hills while your legs are barely moving! My Achilles felt a bit loose, but overall it was ok and I think I'll be good for tomorrow.

Nike Pegasus 33 Miles: 11.50 |

| | Good end to the week. I did a "Tour de Provo"- ran out to the lake on the river trail, then around Lakeview parkway to the freeway entrance, then past the golf course and passing the state hospital back up the hill to home. I spent an inordinant amount of time planning this to be exactly 16 miles, and then I had to stop at a certain point to make sure I hadn't missed a turn, but it was worth it. Not that cold, which was a blessing. Idk where I have in my head this idea of me being able to run super fast long runs without getting tired at the beginning, but this was the fourth week out of five that I started pretty fast and by mile 5 I was feeling "uh oh".But thankfully, like last week, I felt a bit of a second wind at some point and was able to keep on plugging. Overall I was a little under 5:45 pace, which is my fastest recorded pace ever on a run of 15+ miles. Just like last year, the aerobic stuff has come first, now it's time to get some speed. I've never run a really good 3K before, nor have I ever run a fast race on the indoor track, but I am optimistic and would like to shoot to run 8:30 in December at the indoor meet.

| | Wow, 500 miles on my Nikes and it's time to shoe shop already. What a great blessing that I'm hitting so many miles. Today I ran 12 with Aidan nice and slow on the river trail. He talked to me about running long runs slower. I might do so for multiple reasons. I'll research it first. 3 strides. Beautiful day.

| | Idk what just happened, and not in the best way. We did 5 by 1000 on the track with 4-5 min rest. I was supposed to go out in 32 on the 200 and then run a 42, 32,42,32. Definitely not ready to run fast 200s but my coach said he wanted me to do this workout so I did. I'll definitely need to start running fast at some point if I want to run 8:30 in December. The key will be to do it in a smart way so that I can peak at a good time (idk when that will even be, since I don't know if I'll be on the team or not). I ran 3:02, 2:59, 2:58, 3:01, and 3:08. I started feeling kind of cruddy on the fourth one but the fifth one Mason lead and he didn't know how fast to do the slower parts, so that's why that was so slow. Usually I'd go out in 29-30 and then hang on.

| | Ok, this has been a good learning experience. I should have known better than to run 30 second 200s on Tuesday. Today I planned to do a 4-2 fartlek, but after two of the two minute segments, it was feeling too shaky at that pace. I felt alright running slower. But I need to recover tomorrow and hope to be better by Saturday. Next week I'll be smarter.
This morning I ran 5 miles. Felt a bit tight which would make sense given my run this afternoon, but not bad despite supposedly being like 23 degrees outside.

| | Ran Bonneville shoreline again since the weather is still good. I didn't even think about doing strides because my Achilles was still funky, a little higher up. Tomorrow I have a 17 miler planned but I need to be smart. If I can make it to the weekend I think I'll be alright. It's been a rocky return to form, so I want to get my mojo back. I felt a little more fit today, despite the tendon. That's good.

| | Wow. It was a good day to run. At first I was worried about my achilles but by halfway in it felt better. I was trying to back it off and run 6:15-6:30 pace. There were very few times where I felt challenged at all. It was super chill. Now I am excited that I have all this time to recover but I felt very relaxed during my run. That's why I was surprised to have gone 5:59 pace. By far the most chill sub 6 paced long run ever. That's cool!

Wasn't bad for an indoor workout. 69, 66, 67, 69, 67, 65, 69, 66, 68, 65, 65, 62. Hopefully my Achilles will be ok. 66-67 average.

| | Long day, but I'm grateful to not have had tendon problems! I was able to do a whole workout in the afternoon, even though I didn't kill it by any means.
AM: 5 miles
PM: 12 miles on the river trail. 3 mileish warm up and cool down. I did a 3-3 fartlek in the middle. I didn't let it get out of hand. I was averaging a bit over 5:30 pace I think for those 6 miles, so I would guess I was running something like 6 minute pace on the easy and 5 minute pace on the hard? Hard to say exactly. Doesn't really matter either.

| | I had a test at 3 so I didn't leave till nearly 5. So I got to watch it go From day to night. It was pretty, but it also made the run feel long, cold, and tiring. My Achilles wasn't feeling amazing either. This is hard work. Nothing is free in this sport. There's opposition in all things, eh? Hopefully I can feel good tomorrow.

This was my highest mileage week ever. Now I get to recover before hitting the grind next week. Today I ran up the canyon. It didn't feel super easy. I ran 6:03 pace. At the end though I pulled it in and did a cool down in the hopes that I will be ready to go next week.

| | I went really slow today. And I mean, really slow. It felt great though. In the morning I ran 5 miles. It was about 20 degrees but I didn't feel too cold. Then in the afternoon I ran on bonneville shoreline for probably the last time this year (due to weather). It was really nice. My Achilles felt fine and hopefully tomorrow despite my higher mileage day today I'll be ready for a good workout.

They were supposed to be at 5k, 3k, and mike pace respectively but idk if that is target pace or what because it is very obvious to me in workouts like this that I'm not in shape to run these paces on this track for those distances. I ran (2:59, 2:17, 64), (2:52, 2:17, 66), and (2:58, 2:17, 64). I always led the 800, but Aidan had a great workout and was leading the Ks and Josh was doing well also. Achilles felt stressed at times. Cooldown felt good though.

I decided to do a 5 mile tempo. Felt great! Really windy as I went toward the canyon, but in general, I felt like I was rolling and I payed less attention to my Achilles than in a long time. Awesome. Sartorius area hurt a bit still later on. Then I helped my dad with his form. 11.5 miles total.
PM: Sartorius didn't hurt at all which was nice. I left right after thanksgiving dinner so the fact that I made it out alive was nice.

| | My new shoes felt great, and this was a great way to welcome them in! The workout felt very easy. The last one I went a little harder than I should have, but Isaac didn't want me to speed it up at all, and I felt like I could have gone under 2:10 if I really needed to, so it ended up somewhere in the middle. It was supposed to be 3 minutes rest, most were at least 3:30 rest though. We did mile, 800, mile, 800, 800: (4:55ish, 2:17, 4:54, 2:17, 2:13). Felt good enough to do weights!!! I could've done a lot more if I kept the pace where it had been before.

| | Over the past few seasons, one thing has remained constant. Regardless of how fast I am, there will be workouts that go well and workouts that don't. I suppose I could be a world record holder and I would probably still have the same experience. However, I am suspicious that nearly all of my Thursday workouts don't go super fast (with the exception being last Thursday when my workout was in the morning). I need to consider not doubling on Thursday in my opinion. Today I thought I was ready for 4 miles in 20 minutes. I hit mile 1 in 4:59 feeling fine. But I started feeling more tired through mile 2. I turned around at 10 and didn't get back till 15:17 (leading me to believe that I ran something like 5:05 and 5:17, but that is just speculation without a marker). Last mile I was redlining and only ran 5:23. That was pretty bad. Oh well.

PM: 11 miles. Nice and easy. Three strides. The roads were pretty clear. I had some weird body problems which I'll research now but other than that was fine.

| | It actually wasn't as cold as it could have been. I ran 3.5 miles to warmup. Unfortunately I was supposed to meet Aidan at 4:00 but he met meet at 4 to warm up. Oops. So I ran laps around the track complex/ Helaman halls for 15:30 for the three mile tempo. Idk my splits, it was a little concerning that my first lap (over a mile) was 5:43 and my second was about 5:55. The third was probably a bit slower. I tried to control it but I was still tired, even after my nine minute rest. Update: I looked it up on google maps and was impressed. I obviously was running tighter than the roads would be, always on the inside, but it was also hilly so maybe those can discount each other... Anyway, the first lap would have been 4:50 pace and the second lap 5:00 pace, meaning I averaged 9:50 through the two mile for the first nearly 12 minutes of running!!! Then I did 4 by 800 with 2:30 rest, in 2:18, 2:21, 2:22, 2:16. Thankfully my fibularis longus and brevis tendons, which had been acting up, felt fine the whole time. Then I did quick weights since I had to go.

| | Today I was thinking about my peroneal tendons a lot. Despite this, I miraculously felt fine once again during the workout. I think this takes the cake for weirdest running issue to date. Afterwards I did some stretches and stuff to strengthen them. I'm also gonna take NSAIDs, elevate, and ice. The treatment is quite similar to Achilles treatment actually. Today we did 4 by 800 with 2:30 rest and 4 by 400 with 90 seconds rest, with 5 minutes in between. At first I didn't feel so great but I warmed up throughout the workout. (2:18, 2:16, 2:16, 2:16) and (64, 62, 62, 60). Hopefully I have enough speed to run a fast 3K next week.

| | Well, that's a wrap! I'm thankful today that my peroneal tendons seem to be doing just fine. I kept on keeping my pace up even though I had no intention to just because to be honest, it gets kind of boring to run that far if you're just chilling! Also nice that it wasn't too cold. I ran in the afternoon since I was in charge of a temple trip this morning.

| | Where to start...
Workout today meant no time for weights before FHE. We were supposed to do 3 by (1000,800,400) with 90 seconds rest in between and 3-4 min rest between sets. The problem is, as a group, we are or very consistent. Derek, Aidan, Josh and I could all be a bit better with pacing. The workout got changed on our second K when we went slow. I felt like we were warming up in the middle lap of that. Oh well, I had hoped for a shorter workout anyway so I'm not complaining.
(2:56, 2:17, 65) followed by 5 minutes rest, then (2:59, 2:14, 64). Then we took like 10 minutes off and ran (63, 63). Yea so not really sure what to make or that workout. Oh well!
I ran in spikes for my last two 400s. That felt kind of uncomfortable tbh. I might try out my flats on Wednesday. I'm not sure if I would get used to them or not, but afterwards my hip felt a little funky. It's great though to put them on for the first time since 2017!!

| | Pretty chill day. I tried to run nice and slow (although for future reference I think 7 minute pace is even slower than I thought it was). 3 strides. They still don't feel quite as snappy as they could be, that's ok though. It'll come. I did a light weights workout. Can't wait to start doing bench and power cleans.

| | Extended warm up since I had class right afterward (and yes I iced right there in class) and then we did 400, 400, 200, 200 with like 2 minutes rest. 64, 63, 29, 28. I need to make sure I get a solid warm up in on Friday, not just distance wise, but also intensity. The first one I felt a little flat on.

| | If my estimate is correct, I haven't run this little since July 20th, excluding Sundays. Contrary to how I felt then, this time it was by choice and I felt great afterwards! I also did three pretty quick strides. I really don't know quite what to expect tomorrow, but my expectation is to leave it all on the track! :)

| Race: |
BYU December Invite (1.864 Miles) 00:08:39, Place overall: 7 | | Currently feel like a smoker after running in the field house. That is not good for your lungs. Anyway, today's race was really good. My plan was to go out in 70s with my teammates and then go from there. One of the smartest things I think I've done was to about 20 minutes prior to race time go run a 70 second 400 on the outdoor track. That helped get my legs going and remind me what it feels like to run that pace. Everyone went out way fast, I was in the back. Eventually I caught Josh and we ran together for like a lap before I passed him. The rest of the race was a blur. I was passing people the whole way. Eventually Michael Ottesen and Brandon Garnica outkicked me but at least I still broke 8:40. Third place was only two seconds in front of me. Idk if I'll make the team off this but it's a good confidence booster as I prep to maybe run the mile in January. We'll see. My strength is definitely my strength right now. Another good lesson I learned was a mental one. I was thinking about how I ran so well at the Freedom Run this year and I went into it not even planning to race it. I figured I shouldn't stress out beforehand so I tried to not worry and prayed for help. That worked well and after I had been getting kind of antsy earlier, I felt fine around race time.

| | I worked out with Aidan, Mason, and Easton. We did a 8-5-3-2-1 fartlek. Aidan did a great job making sure we didn't get any more rest than we were supposed to. Fine by me. Unfortunately I got a little overzealous. This reminds me of a 1600 cutdown I did freshman year. On the 8 I thought I should be able to do the Helaman loop well under 5 flat pace again to start. I was right. I tried a little too hard though and hit the lap in 5:30 (4:40 pace). On the uphill to close I got a little slower. Then the 5 was about the same, but the 3-2-1 on the track were kind of weak. Ran one K on the 3, Hit 400 in 68 on the 2, and ran 64 for the 400. Couple things to improve: a) I was significantly ahead of my teammates. I need to find a way to still fight even when I'm not running with others. Having said that, my left Achilles was not doing hot. So I need to take care of that. B) When I came through the first lap so fast, I thought "dang this is fast I'm gonna pay for that". I know I went out hard, but I wasn't doing myself any favors mentally by telling myself I was gonna have a bad workout. Weights.

| | Well, that was a blessing just that I was able to do this workout. I feel very grateful that I felt alright. I didn't run super smart though. I really wanted to go out in 5:30 but I forgot what that means apparently. Mile one was 5:12. Hit mile 3 in 15:33. Next two miles I think we're about 5:15 and 5:20 but I don't really know. Then 6 and 7 were 10:51 and I decided to call it early. This was one of the rare occasions I wish I had a GPS watch to keep me more on pace. 7 miles @ 5:17 pace on the river trail.

| | I'm home! It was fun to run in Medford again. I thought about extending my run or doing strides since I thankfully felt pretty good today, but decided to play it safe. Can't wait to run Roxy tomorrow.

| | That was interesting. I did about 3.5 Roxy loops at 6:45 pace. I wanted it to be really chill. Thankfully my tendons did alright considering how holly it was, but my hips were killing me. I took an ice bath afterwards. I wonder if it had to do with all the hills I'm not used to. On the plus side, it was super misty and foggy at the start of my run but by the time I got to the loop I had risen above it! Also, people in Medford are friendly in their own way. Pretty much every person who has driven passed me has waved. That's super cool.

| | Rain... there was nice things about today too though. At least I was able to do my workout. I planned and re planned this workout like six times because of family plans changing. It wasn't as fast as I had hoped for, but I really think that running in the morning is tough for me. You don't even start your workout until you've run 8 miles (and gone ice skating, in today's case). I ran 5 miles in the AM, and then went to the NM track for 4 by 2K with 2:30, 3:30, and 2:30 rest. It was supposed to be tempo pace on 1 and 3 and 10K pace on 2 and 4. I ran 6:11, 6:09, 6:17, and 6:12. Felt a little junky besides being tired.

| | We decided to go to the temple as a family last minute so I did my workoutas the sun was setting at the North track. This was actually an improvised workout. I have another one on Saturday but I want to get fast. I'll have to talk to my coach about a plan to get me on the team as quick as possible. I did 8 by 400 with 90 seconds rest and 2 minutes before the last two. Miraculously I didn't throw up the Indian food I had eaten. (66, 63, 63, 63, 64, 64, 63, 61). I would always go out in 30 point and then slow down. Hopefully soon I can maintain that and average 60s on this which is what I need to run a fast mile.

| | I don't like to cut into my mileage, but I'm going to have to do it. I felt great on my 11 mile run on the bike path this morning except my platar fascia which have not been doing well. I'm going to try to be very careful in protecting it. Weights afterward. I was rushed and hurt my back a bit doing some of the new ones. I'll need to research how to do them correctly.

| | Good run on Roxy. I averaged 6:33s. I assume most of the pace increase had to do with doing one loop, or about 2.6 miles, hard. I'm guessing normally I would do that at 6:30 pace and for my third lap I was at 5:30 pace. It was kind of hard to switch gears. It just didn't feel like I had worked out super hard afterward. Hmm. I got home and felt great, almost like I could run again today (which I won't). Plantar fascia felt better today, which is great.
