-Break stroller records?
-Stay fit for a very long time. I believe what goes into making a competitive runner at age 60 is much different than age 20, just like what goes into making a good marathoner differs from a good sprinter. I hope that by taking care of my body, I can be very fast for my age as I get older.
Personal: I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I served a mission in Rome, Italy from 2015 to 2017. I eat a whole food, plant-based diet, which I believe helps my running. I like chocolate shakes on sunday nights and I will always call the Pacific northwest home. |

| | AM: Tempo run workout. 35 degrees felt nice compared to previous days. Decided to shake things up and alternate harder half miles and easier half miles. Here are the splits. 1-5 are uphill and into a little wind toward the end, 6-11 are downhill. Thus there is a bit of a net downhill. 2:41, 2:49, 2:39, 2:51, 2:43, 2:46, 2:23, 2:36, 2:20, 2:42, 2:23. Overall that is 28:59 for 5.5 miles or 5:16 per mile. That's about 5:19 through the first five miles with even elevation change. I think that is a good workout. Idk what it would've been on flat.

| | LR today since we will be on the road early tomorrow for the temple. The last time I went to the Philadelphia temple, it was a Friday and I also did my long run that day, and the humidity made it feel like a super long run. Last night it snowed and the roads were clear but I was running through a couple inches of powder on the W&OD. The way back was significantly slower with the uphill but mainly the wind that pressed the whole way almost. Still a beautiful run. It was my longest ever in terms of time on my feet at over 2 hours, 9 minutes. 7:11 pace.

Was a little dissapointed in how I ran. I only got a distance on the Ks. I intended for it to not be very hilly but it ended up including the biggest hill (25 foot drop and then back up again over just a few hundred meters). Ran 2:54 pace on the way out and just 3:09 pace on the way back.

| | Last run on eastbound W&OD. It was supposed to be a hill workout but basically every workout has been a hill workout for me so I did one that was about as hilly as normal. What I did is ran hard two miles in one direction and then came back the other way. On the easy (I took 30 seconds each time) I would jog around and then start where I stopped. In this way, I was able to see that I did the first 2 hard miles in 9:31 and the last hard mile in 4:45. The rest was balanced with 2x1min hard, 5x2min hard, 1:30, 1, 30 seconds. That makes 4:30 total rest (a little more at the turnaround).

| | This run hurt in a way I haven't in a while. As in, it hurt more, but it also hurt different.
4 by 3 by 400, with 60 seconds in between reps and 2:30 between sets. These times I ran aren't terrible actually, especially for a tough, unbanked track. With just a little more clip in my stride, I'd be feeling really confident again. It was tough to get dropped on my last set by my teammates, but like I said these times aren't anything to be ashamed of: (64,64,64,64) (62, 62, 62, 63) (62,63,63,63)
The real win was on the cooldown and warm up. It was 7 degrees and sunny with windchill of -11 but thanks in part to a new mask I got, I was totally warm and ended up feeling quite hot in my core, so I took off my jacket and just wore my t-shirt and hyperwarm.

| | AM: 5 treadmill miles. It was -11 and -25 windchill on the way there. I lost my trust in the apartment treadmills though- last week I was booking it to run 7:30 pace, and today, on the SAME TREADMILL, I was doing a light morning jog- at 5:10 pace. Smh.

| | Warmer run, but at 10 degrees and very windy, this was the coldest legit workout I've ever done. I'd like to use that as an excuse for why I didn't run as well as I would've liked, but at some point your excuses have to stop. 5:14 pace for 6 miles, a little slower on the way out and faster on the way back. I got dropped with about 2 miles to go (again! second time this week. that's no fun) but somehow hung on within about 5 seconds of the group. I should be grateful though- at least I was ok with my achilles tendon, which felt tight to start and afterwards. Also, I didn't get too cold. I actually gradually pulled my mask down to uncover my face and head for comfort, although afterwards I touched my ears and they felt like an object- completely numb. It was weird being in negative temperature with the windchill and electing to run the whole way back without gloves on. That's what a workout can do to you I guess.

| | 6 by 800 with 2 min rest. Was a little nervous beforehand because of how last two workouts went so I made a last second call to wear flats the whole way. Hopefully my Achilles will be ok tomorrow. It's interesting getting used to the track here. At BYU the indoor track was significantly longer and banked, so it's hard to compare times. I heard today that a mile gets a 3 second conversion. We were told to run 2:15s which I considered quite conservative. 2:16, 2:15, 2:13, 2:13, 2:15, 2:12. The slower ones felt great and the faster ones weren't too bad.

Probably averaged in the low 4:50s for the hard given that 7:30 pace on the easy would be 4:51 pace. Not super special, but its hard to judge when its cold and windy out.

As usual here, we took slightly less than the required rest each rep ha. This was faster than I had expected to go, so I felt good. The last one even got down almost to goal mile pace for Saturday, which should be 1:33 flat. It was harder than the 800s last week but easier than the 400s from the week before.

Gopher Classic (1 Miles) 00:04:13 | | Raced. Ran 4:13.65. Interesting splits. I guess we slowed down a lot the second 400 and ran like a 65. With a few laps to go some kid shot past me. Turns out he ran that lap in 29. I tried to catch him but couldn't. I think for the flat track this converts to like a 4:11 low.
Honestly the better part was the 3K 2.5 hours later. I almost didn't do it cuz of my achilles tendon was feeling tight after the mile but decided to give it a go. Seth took us through a 800 in 2:15 high I think and probably 4:35 at the mile. I pulled out at about 6:51 at 2.4 k but was able to run those extra 800 meters in front of Emmet which I think was probably helpful to him. Now I am wishing I had finished. I feel like I could have chilled behind him alright and gone like 8:34 like he did but talk is cheap. Maybe a 3K in the future. I never did well at doubling in high school but felt solid about this. I did feel tired in the mile, maybe cuz of our big workout wednesday contributing there in addition to the shock to the system with the speed endurance stuff.

You feel like your legs are flying but you're hardly breathing. I felt like my heart rate was too low and I wasn't as fatigued at the end as I should have been. I guess it's a good learning experience that I hope I won't need to use.

| | It was 2 or 4 degrees out and less than that with the wind, but the way the sky looked, it seemed like a really nice day. So it was a quite pleasant run actually. The worst part was running on the ice skating rink of Como blvd and the Minneapolis portion of the river road. Beyond that and the university were great. 6:13 average pace, probably closer to 6:00 or faster which isn't too shabby for the weather in the areas that weren't covered in ice.
There is a big construction project down south where the river bends. It was weird to see so much empty land in the cities.

Snowshoe Classic (1.864 Miles) 00:08:21, Place overall: 1 | | Last night I only slept a couple hours (due to circumstances not having to do with race nerves or anything) but I tried to not let that mess with me in my head. Honestly I don't think it really affected me. Felt fine at the start. Ran mostly 33s with a 32 to start and finish. I also ran a 32 my first lap on my own (Khalid led me through the mile in 4:27), and after that each lap was about .2 seconds slower until 400 to go. I was kind of bummed cuz the official conversion for my 3K last year is 8:13, and this converts to 8:15.4. So I almost PRed. Plus I had the super spikes. But I don't want that to bother me too much. I won my race. And I ran a solid time. I may yet still go sub-14 this year.

| | 8 mile tempo on west river road, thankfully ice wasn't really an issue. Went out in 5:20s pace and it felt like long run pace which was a great sign. I told myself it was because the wind was at our back which it was. On the way back it was pretty bad but not the worst I've ever dealt with. I also ran right behind someone most of the time which helped. It felt comfortable the entire way so the last mile I broke the wind a bit. Ended up averaging 5:18 pace, so not extremely good even accounting for wind, but overall I felt really good about today because I was so comfortable.

| | Cool run. I took a 20 minute bus ride towards St. Paul, such that I only ran 1 mile to get to the Gateway State Trail. They said it was plowed during the winter but turned out to still be pretty ice at parts. I'm sure that won't be an issue from next week on, I just wanted to shake things up from east river road. Made a quick decision to run north at the junction with Bruce Vento trail, which ended up being my favorite part of the run (including because it was totally dry). Then I ran back, and exited the state trail on the road that would take me straight to my classic route on Wheelock. 6:19 pace overall, the first 6 miles at 6:25 pace (ice) so probably more like 6:25 for the first 10 total with the ice and 6:10 for the last 7.

It was 6 by k getting supposed to start at 2:56 and end at 2:46. Rest started at 1 minute and progressively increased by 20 seconds until 2:20 before the last one (I nailed the rest if nothing else haha). Ran most of it on my own since Khalid was sick but he led the second one and I didn't do a very good job directing his pace which is why we biffed it. 2:54, 2:58, 2:49, 2:49, 2:49, 2:46. Tbh I felt tired from Wednesday I assume. It was an "easy" workout and I knew that if it were harder I would've had a tough time.

Raleigh Relays (3.107 Miles) 00:14:18, Place overall: 61, Place in age division: 16 | | It was dumping rain all day. Thankfully nothing during my race. You felt the wind, but mostly just when you weren't running behind someone. Before the race, my coach told me to not worry about splits but just compete. I think that was good and makes me feel better about how I did. So, the race started and the pacer had just told us he was going to hit 66s (13:45 pace). This was reasonable given that that pace was just a hair faster than several of the guys in the field have run. Several laps in, I was hanging with the group (starting in dead last, but worked my way up a couple spots) and not struggling too bad. I didn't know how to feel cuz I was still right there with everyone, but some guy yelling splits to someone said we were hitting 67-69 pace. Sure enough, my second lap was 69.7! So, pacing was bad for the leaders but wasn't bad for me. When people started dropping, I surged to catch up. My fastest lap was 1800-2200 in 66.0 (closed in 66 mid). Hit 2 miles in 9:03 feeling tired but alright, but apparently I slowed down a lot, hitting 70-71 after that. I soon recognized it wasn't going to be a fast race, but I kept battling. Don't have regrets about my effort even though it was not my best. A lot of people didn't run fast actually (for example, basically everyone in my heat was sub 14 or sub 8 and I beat like 6 of them), so maybe the humidity (80%) affected us. Going into this race I thought I was in 14:05-14:10 shape under good conditions.

| | Today we went to the American Tobacco trail. I think it must be famous among runners because we saw a ton of good ones there, including a lot of the teams that were at the meet. It was pretty cool. Its right on the edge of what is developed in the Raleigh area though so its sad to see the forest being cut down to build houses. I ran with the guys around 7 minute pace for the first 6.25 miles, then they turned around and I picked it up so they wouldn't have to wait too long for me. That was like 6 minute pace to the turnaround point and it felt downhill (turns out it really isn't that much downhill) so I thought it would slow it back down from there but it turns out I averaged 5:41 on the way back. Felt pretty easy and quick, like the wind was blowing me uphill. I was trying to be just gentle enough with my sore achilles tendon. I slowed down from 5:30 pace to 6:00 pace once the paved section ended and I had to run on sandy gravel again.

| | It was like 35 degrees and windy for our tempo today. I should've been more brave and taken the lead earlier, but I didn't know how I'd feel or my teammates would. Like last time, it felt pretty chill. We'd hit a pace that I would've guessed to be 5-10 seconds slower based on how I felt. Would've enjoyed going faster at the end but it's fine. 41:26 when we stopped, or about 5:10-11 pace.

| | Beautiful sunny day and about 40 degrees on the track at 11 am was nice for a workout. I thought I might be toast today after recent hard efforts but I felt good. I hope this lasts through upcoming races. If not, I may need to back off mileage. But no need to worry about that now. Put on the flats for: 200, 3200, 400, 1200, 400, 1600, 200, 200. We did 1:30 rest after the 400s and 3 min after the 2 mile, 2:30 after mile and 2:00 after the 1200 I believe. Honestly throwing the 400s in there made the workout easier.
32, 9:27, 67, 3:33, 67, 4:32, 30, 30.
The only things to note was that we went out on pace in the 2 mile but lap 4 was slow and we came through feeling great- in 4:47. After that I was on my own but I got it back down to pace in one lap with a 68. So I split 4:47, 4:40 and tbh it felt hard mostly because I had to push things back on pace that second mile. Hopefully that doesn't happen in a race like it did last year. Then my teammate led us through 800 in 2:20 on the last mile, and I finished it off with a 2:12 800 to run the 4:32. Once again, that was hard, but had I run even splits I could have done a lot more of the 4:40s and hopefully a couple more of the 4:32s. Hopefully when I am willing to go to the well, I can not get way off pace. Like I know I can keep going with the effort I did the 2 mile in, but sometimes that effort balloons from 71s to 75s. I have personal experience haha.

| | Really nice warm morning for a long run. Streets were quiet and I ended my run a new way at McCarron's lake. Meant to go really slow for recovery. Averaged 6:24 pace overall (faster than intended). I think that happened cuz once you are on the way back you kind of just want to get home and not hang around.
As of today I have done 1000 miles on the year so far.

| | Hill workout on west river road, at the big hill. Wind (and eventually rain) were at our back for the workout portion up the hill. 3x(2:00,1:30,1:00,30) with a rest of jogging down the hill, which made for a recovery of like 1:1.5 I want to say. So the workout was like 40 min long but only hard for 15. Achilles tendon felt ok, gonna try to take care of it. This workout hurts differently from a tempo, which hurts differently from a track workout. Overall its a relatively easy one.

| | Indoor track workout due to wind I assume. There were a lot of separate workouts going on but I had someone to run behind for everything till the last 800, when I changed the workout to meet the needs of my Achilles. I also ran in trainers for this reason. 1200, 1000, 800, 600, 800 with 2:30, 2:00, 2:00, 1:30 rest. Ran 3:18, 2:45, 2:11, 1:35, 2:09. Never run a 1200 that fast in practice, but I'm trying to keep raising the bar in my mind for what is "good".

Mt SAC Relays (6.214 Miles) 00:29:38, Place overall: 20 | | Mt. SAC. My race was at 9:40 pm which equates to 11:40 in Minnesota. So I was yawning a bit beforehand, and I think it may have been due to tiredness (as well as nerves). But I wasn't worried about it affecting me. I decided to do what I considered the smart thing given my achilles situtation and wear my Vaporflys instead of spikes. I'm glad I have that option. Spikes would be pretty unforgiving. The new stadium is absolutely amazing. There wasn't a ton of people there so on the backstretch I could totally hear my coach yelling at me, which was helpful. I did a lot of thinking prior to this race, because a 10K is a mental battle. You can spend the first 10 minutes or so not really struggling but thinking about how its going to hurt later. With 40 people in my race, I didn't end up having anyone in specific to hang onto like my brother did so he could break 9 in the 3K the other night, but we decided to have me just try to be near the top. Weather and set up were awesome. This was a great final race in California under the lights.
Race: With so many people, my first lap was like 73. That was a little unnerving to be behind already with so far to go. But someone started pulling us from up front, so I was pleased to see my splits put me closer to being on pace over the next several laps. I remember hitting around 4:44 at the mile and maybe 8:49 at 3K. I passed a few people on those laps, and as the race progressed, it became tempting to "rest" behind someone once I caught up to them. But their coaches would yell "72" at them, and I knew following them was not going to get me the paces I wanted. Hit 5K in about 14:43 feeling ok, and now focused on my plan to get to 20 minutes intact. Basically from there on out I tried to let the time pass while maintaining pace. My fear going into this race was I wouldn't break 30, and I had good reason to be concerned about that. I remember having 10 minutes to run the last 8 laps and feeling like I could really PR. The last few minutes I was motivated by knowing I would PR. For example, with 1600 to go, I was in a lot of pain and was not resting on my laurels but knew I only needed a 5:07 at that point to go sub 30. So I'm proud of myself that I never let the pace balloon like I did last year after a similar start. I have enough data to estimate splits for the six miles (knowing there's an extra 200 somewhere in there on a similar pace), assumimg I correctly got my 3K, 5K and 8.4k splits- 4:44, 4:40, 4:43, 4:41, 4:53, 4:45.

It included 3 miles which were each at a little over 5 minute pace, and then 2 sets of 2:00,1:30,1:00 in between that were faster than them to some degree. Definitely didn't feel as good as it might have normally, hopefully due to 10K which I will hopefully finish recovering from soon.

| | Ouch. Ouch. Ouch. This workout was wretched. It's almost good that this has nothing to do with fitness- my body still feels absolutely roasted from the race. Maybe a big workout Monday (volume-wise if nothing else) delayed recovery. Idk. Coach pulled me early, and I didn't even protest that much. 600 in 1:34, 400 in 60, 300 in 44, 200 in 29, 1200 in 3:23 (after opening in 64 and dying a cold death). Rest ranged from 1 minute to almost 3 minutes.

Kip Janvrin Open (0.932 Miles) 00:03:53, Place overall: 3 | | Raced the Janvrin open in Indianola, Iowa because my time wasn't good enough for the three heats at Drake. I was runner number 1 in the first heat though so maybe I just missed it. It was rainy off and on and windy at 20 mph. My upper body felt ok after pushing the car, but my mind was not in a very good place. Started the race. It went out quick. I felt bad, like I wanted to give up after 150 meters. So idk if I'm still fatigued and recovering or what. Of course, the first 150 meters of a 61 second lap are fairly quick so that could be that too. Hit 800 in 2:04. Even when you're hurting, the race ends so quickly. Wish I had sent it more after that. Apparently I was 63.xx the following lap, and 45 to close. On the homestretch I passed like 3 people. It felt easy to do so and I was definitely motivated to do it. Still only got third place, and I lost to a specific SDSU guy for the third consecutive race. I did break the meet record though so that's a plus. Afterwards I got in a long cool down with none other than my old roommate Bryce! I also got some food at his house because we couldn't find my bus. What a fun coincidence! I never would have known he was in town if I didn't send him a text. My time was 3:53.44.

Big 10 Track Champs (6.214 Miles) 00:30:05, Place overall: 18 | | There you have it. The end of an era has come, as that was my last collegiate race. Although it didn't go as well as I wanted, I didn't feel too dissapointed afterward because I was thinking of my college career as a whole, which never should have happened at all. So its hard to feel too ungrateful from that perspective. I'm sure I'll have more thoughts later. It's still all sinking in.
The race didn't dilly dally too much. I was near dead last at the mile in 4:41. Really just trying to conserve energy and not run into the wind, and I thought I mostly did a good job sliding up only when someone would let a gap start forming. Here is a pet peeve I have: A) when you are immediately behind someone and someone behind you tries to pass you and insert themselves there. Why?? B) when someone lets a gap form, you pass them, and then they try to close the gap to cut you off. Both actions hurt both people. Oh well. 9:23 at 2 miles I think. 14:43 at 5K, though I had already started slowing and was more in survival mode than feeling agressive. Continued to slow, punctuated by three 76s near the end. Hard to believe I was running over 5 minute pace. Then a 72 and 65 to close. Wish I could have caught a few more people. Definitely a good home crowd there though.

| | Cooler morning. I instantly clicked into a faster pace today. Measured one mile using mile markers lining a race course they are doing today by East River road in 5:40, but that felt fast. Turns out I still went 5:48 pace overall in a solid but not out of the ordinary longer run effort. That mile was the hilliest mile of the day. Today was the Fargo marathon and while this had nothing to do with why I went faster, I wonder how I would've done. The marathon winner was 2:29 and half winner was 1:07. I definitely feel more recovered than after my last 10K, but I'm not sure I could've won the half (and I really can't presume to guess the marathon as I have never run that distance before).

| | Decided last night to run hard today. It was raining but warm (60 degrees) when we started out. I ran with my wife and baby for a little over a mile. Then I did a mile warm up till I got to University Ave where I wouldn't have to wait for all the lights. I decided to go 25 minutes out, knowing that would be well over 4 miles. I decided to take the UMN bridge, even though that means running down the hill and up the big incline on west river road. The rain wasn't bad until partway through there was some lightning and it started coming down fairly hard. Still, my shoes were never saturated (although my clothes were "washing machine" level wet) and the wind was present but never terrible. I went pretty hard at first, and definitely felt like I was taking a beating and slowed partway through (you know you're going fast when you feel tired and see you've only been runnning for 7 minutes, and a lot of it downhill). I slowed further on the way back, though I was pleasently surprised that my split on the way back was 26:03, not too far off the 25:32 I did on the way out. Then I ran hard to the Co-op, which coincided beautifully with 1:00:00 of hard running. Turns out that was 11.36 miles overall, 5:18 pace. (5:12 on the way out, then 5:18 segment 2, and 5:23 the home stretch). That was good I guess. Nearly a 1:09 half marathon on a hard but totally on-a-whim solo effort in a pair of old shoes, on a rainy day, with a serious hill and some minor hills both ways (one brief stop at half way). If I had to guess my half marathon fitness right now, I'd conservatively guess 1:07, but on a good day I think 1:06 is very possible and 1:05 is unlikely but not out of the question. The downside is there are no nearby races that offer prize money where I can test my fitness. I just looked last night and they all seem to be raising money for some cause. The competitive ones don't offer money either and are super expensive. I was really banking on having competitions for cash to keep me fired up after college running. I need some sort of plan.

Given my lack of track work and hard run Saturday I shouldn't be too bummed. It was tough but could've done more. Gotta find a race.

| | Did basically the same route again. There was no "warm up", no "start line" or anything. I just started out feeling nice and loose and picking it up while feeling relaxed. I did start to push it more on the way out but still feeling good, then on the way home I realized that would be the only pace segment I could accurately calculate and didn't want to slow down for it. I probably sped up and ran the back 7 miles at 5:17 pace. The seems to be a magical "hard" pace that I can go for 8-12 miles, and is somewhere between half marathon and marathon pace.

| | Slower run on St Anthony parkway today, especially on the way out (well, it felt slower. apprarently I still averaged 6:41). Super humid after rain last night but not annoying since it was only 60 degrees.

| | 65 degrees and humidissimo. But I'll never complain about an overcast, quiet Saturday morning on east river road. I felt tired this morning and as I started out, I told myself there's no way I'd run fast (and I knew I wouldn't run far cuz I got started late and am biking later). Somehow I averaged 6:07s on the way out and 5:31s on the way back, feeling very slow.

| | Probably about 6:45 pace. 80+ degrees when we started and went on the lateral today, but the shade and wind helped. Also, it was either less humid (not likely lol) or I am just getting used to it because it was hot but not nearly as miserable as last time. The reality is that although that is hot for a morning run, I have run in temps much warmer than 80 degrees, even in humidity, when I've gotten used to them.

| Race: |
Lift Bridge Race (10 Miles) 00:51:08, Place overall: 1 | | Lift Bridge 10 mile race today! I kept checking the weather, and was worried about it. Turns out when we got to Bayport, MN, it was about 70 degrees and 90 percent humidity because it was pouring rain. By a miracle, the rain almost entirely stopped by the time I began my warm up, and the weather wasn't ever too much on my mind during the race. I had been kicking myself for not bringing an extra pair of shorts for the race, but that wasn't necessary. The race itself was beautiful. It was very hilly. You gain 230 feet of elevation over the first 6 miles, and extra when you account for the downhills that there were too. At one point I was running up a steep hill in a random neighborhood all on my own (I won by 7 minutes) and it couldn't have seemed less like a race. But a race it was, and I really enjoyed it. The last few miles didn't feel too bad since they were so downhill. Given the hills, the wind, humidity, and temp, I can say with confidence that I would be sub 50 at the Pear Blossom and sub 1:07 in a half marathon with better conditions. Not bad for employing my "just run" strategy of training.
But wait, there's more! I know this should be met with skepticism, but the previously certified course was completely changed like a week ago for reasons unknown to me. When I plug it into map my run, I got 10.4 miles! On further investigation, there are discrepancies at least in the very first mile, as the course map shows us starting at a different point than we actually did. Map my run hits the one mile approximately .25 miles before the map does for that reason. I can't write it off as a better PR than what I ran, but a 10.25 mile race would have been 49:50ish, and a 10.40 mile race would have been 49:10ish. Update to that: the race website has a Mapmyrun map of the course. It shows you hitting 10 miles before the end of the race, and shows you starting further ahead than we started. Totaled up, it mean I ran about 10.15 miles. I feel good about sticking with that. That is 50:22 for a 10 mile.
Splits, according to mile markers: 5:09, 5:03, 5:15, 10:26, 5:20, 5:08, 5:03, 4:44, 4:56. You can see the effect of hills.

| | Quiet, overcast Saturday morning run in the mid 60s through a beautiful place. What more could you ask for? I guess these were the running conditions I was paying for over the winter. I was again surprised by how slow I went. Oh well. It was a cool but slow course- getting on East river road via East river flats, then finishing up running down the trail at Shadow falls (St Thomas jut) for the first time.
I wonder if my old shoes are making my tendons hurt. I'm excited to get new ones after my trip.

| | Last run in WA on Iron Horse Trail. I considered driving there and probably should have because you lose 250 feet total on the way out, almost all of it on the journey to get to the trail itself on a busy road without a shoulder. | | I can’t think of enough superlatives. Probably the best run I’ve ever been on. This was technically my fourth time on the gateway trail but only my second in the rural side, and last time the trees hasn’t bloomed yet. This time, there were ferns on the ground, towering deciduous trees with bright leaves, starkly contrasting white aspens, and pine trees, all a little dark while reflecting an overcast grey sky. It was like the garden of Eden. This run alone was worth a week of winter weather. I just couldn’t get enough (though I only dared to stop at the turn around, as I would become drenched in sweat).
With mile markers on a run like that, the miles tick by and you’re turning around before you know it. I could’ve gone 20 miles easy today despite the humidity (or at least, turned around at 10 miles thinking it would be easy).
I have a very favorable image of Stillwater area in my head, which is helped because all three times I’ve run there, it’s been a warm, overcast day.
Overall it was 5:50 pace for 13 miles. Hopefully my ability to “chill” at that pace will mean I can go much faster next week.

| Race: |
St Croix Crossing (13.1 Miles) 01:06:48, Place overall: 1 | | First half marathon ever, first time being taken to the medical tent. That being said, I think the kind officials and fellw runners who helped me out haven't seen college runners before. If they thought I looked bad on the ground, they should've seen the carnage of NCAA XC Champs March 2021. I felt relatively recovered sleepwise, but a little fatigued from everything, incluing actually some great news I got yesterday that may have just distracted me a bit. Overall, I was probably in a bit better shape at my last race, so my time today was fairly expected. A 67 would have been dissapointing and a 65 would have been exciting. What this does tell me is that I'm a ways off from Olympic Trials. Running sub 63 sounds crazy, even if I had competition and the course wasn't up and down like it was today again (though more down this time). I would have to qualify with an actual marathon. I plugged this time into a couple conversions and they gave me 2:19 as a projected marathon. On a good course, I think I could get it done. But that assumes you are equally fit for the marathon as the half. Running 5:06 pace kind of made me chuckle because it appears no matter what the distance, my body settles into 5:00-5:10 pace on the roads. So I think I have good marathon potential, but to harness that I would need to learn how to take calories while running (today by stomach was in knots again and I couldn't stand to think about having some gatorade), and I would need to do more long runs in the 20 mile range. I would perform woefully off of the 13 mile LRs I've been doing recently.
Splits: I have a hard time beleiving them. I was sure tired at the end, but tired Ethan running downhill is usually faster than conservative Ethan at the beginning of a race. I feel like all the early miles were short and the late ones long. Either than or I have poor perception of pace! 4:56, 4:59, 5:01, 5:02, 10:17, 5:21, 4:51, 5:10, 5:05, 5:26, 5:03, 5:01 (pace for the last 1.1).

| | Hit the jackpot again with a dark, overcast, quiet saturday morning on east river flats and east river road. It was really enjoyable, except my hernia being a bit sore. It started raining on the way back and is now supposed to dump 3.5 inches today. Sorry, Oregonians. I was really surprised to see I only ran 7:07 pace though, that did not feel that slow.

| | Longest run ever! 20.1 miles. And technically my fastest long run ever at 5:43 pace. The Gateway trail held to fashion and it was cloudy again this morning. Less people in the trail at 6:15. I just kept going and going, even against my better judgment when my Achilles started feeling a little tight. I finished the trail and ran a half mile on the road it pops out on, and it felt like the edge of the earth (probably because I've been living in a city). So pretty. A few of the mile splits are definitely bogus but I'll report them anyway: 6:41, 5:43, 5:48, 5:33, 5:31, 5:44, 4:55, 6:00, 5:05, 5:20, 6:01, 5:00, 5:55, 5:35, 5:41, 5:55, 5:35, 6:02. My tiredness at the end was due mostly to the mileage and lack of food. The pace wasn't really bothersome, even after feeling tired early.

| | Turns out the "hills of Tennessee" are no joke. You can't run from the house here like at all, so I tried to run at the hike we went to and it worked out not the best.

| | 6:46 pace afternoon run on farmers fields after getting home. Wasn't used to running at that time, and I might still be recovering from the long run, and we woke up early this morning- for some reason, I felt trashed. The clouds and thunderstorm made it a lot more bearable though.

| | Kind of weird run but fun. To go out with a bang before my surgery, I decided to wake up a little early and bike to Minnehaha park. I had a problem with the app, and a person trying to be helpful ended up taking the last functional e bike. At least that means I can feel like this was a more legitamate two-event workout, even though it meant getting a hip workout. It was raining when I got on the bike but stopped pretty soon after. I did 7.8 miles in 37 minutes. Then I got off and ran around pike island. I got lost once but it was in a cool place. It felt like the middle of nowehere, except a huge bridge passing overhead. Kind of interesting. Then I ran around pike island. It was pretty cool. I realized I was taking longer than I intended and pushed it hard on the way home. Despite this, I only ran 6:00 pace for the 17.02 miles. That is dissapointing. I was soaked in sweat due to the humidity. I think either hypoglycemia or dehydration caused the slow pace. Doesn't matter too much as I am about to lose all my fitness anyway. It was weird getting off the bike and running, my legs were still trying to pedal. It was kind of funny while it lasted for like 10 min.

| | Last run for a while :( :( :(
Ran to 18th with the fam and back, and then to falcon heights park
As it happens, I am at exactly 2300.0 miles on the year.

| | Woohoo! 1.92 miles at a scorching 8:27 pace. I feel very sore, out of shape, and it hurt a lot (but hopefully not in a bad way). Good to be back at it though!!
| | Could be wrong about this but I may have been torching 7:45 pace. I definitely started out my run getting to the road before the tracks at 4:55 instead of 5:09 like last time. Still felt kind of yucky in the tummy.
| | Woah!!! I feel worlds better than the past couple days. Went 7:12 pace today and felt way more normal. That is very exciting. Probably time to start planning for the future.

| | 7:10 pace. Felt sick today and did not get hardly any sleep last night. Yuck.

| | 6 miles, 7:05 pace. Still avoiding hills by continuing straight across the bridge and under the bridges towards downtown.
| | 7:04 pace towards but not reaching boom island. Lots of construction.
| | Wasn't feeling very good in the groin area. And it was cold out today, below 40 degrees. Maybe that is why I apparently only ran 7:21 pace.

| | 6:58 pace! First time under 7 since surgery, exactly one month later. East river.
| | Unfortunately, I had to break my pre-conference long run tradition, given that 9 miles does not qualify as a long run. That being said, I did enjoy running to Como park and enjoying the beautiful changing colors on the trees.
| | East river flats, approximately 8.5 miles.
| | 7:07 pace farmers fields. Yucky air today.
| | 7:02 pace on west river. Still feeling some groin pain when I run.
| | Wretched night last night, as both I felt sick again (how?) and the toddler was feeling really sick. Yuck. Took me a long time to get up the strength to run. Hopefully I get better so I can have a good birthday run and long run.
| | About 9 miles yesterday at Como Classic. Had a better sleep the night before. Found a new way to upgrade the route.
| | 6:24 pace on the gateway trail (to Stillwater) after temple. Was the hardest 6:24 pace I've done in a long time. It's ok, that's what happens when you get back into it.
| | Approximately 9.25 miles on west river. Nice weather this morning (42 degrees ish), but due to shorter days and colder weather, I think my days of morning runs are numbered.
| | East river flats. 7:03 pace and it still felt quick.
| | About 7:00 pace for 9.4 miles (I've been rounding up this week)
| | New weather called for a new route. It was snowing this morning! I ran east river road. 6:50 pace was my fastest besides the LR since surgery, but that may have also been because there is no major hill in this run.
| | 33 degrees but I opted for shorts actually. Kind of sad to say it, but I got out late and didn't quite finish the resevoir woods out and back like I wanted to, so obviously I was hustling on my way home. Like, I was pretty much maxing out. At 6:27 pace. Kinda sad. I'm surprised its taking me this long to get back to normal fitness. Oh well.
| | East river flats in 65:30, I think about 7 minute pace. 25 degrees out this morning. I wore a hat and gloves with my long sleeve shirt, but I think in weather like that it might be time to bring out the big guns to be more comfortable.
| | West river road, 7:00 pace. 25 degrees again and I wore my jacket and which felt very nice.
| | Farmers fields, 6:53 pace. Warmer today.
| | Really warm day today, in the 70s. When I ran on Gatway (left fork) after the temple, it was in the 50s I think. Ran 5:56 pace! It also didn't feel like so much of a chore to finish the run at the end, I wasn't as exhausted even though I continued to bring the mileage up. Maybe my previous long runs are kicking in now for my fitness.
Splits according to the watch: 3:16, 12:35, 6:01, 5:41, 5:40, 5:59, 5:19, 5:22, 6:04, 5:50, 5:52, 6:08, 5:38, 6:08, 2:43.

| | Como classic, approximately 6:47 pace. I think running in the afternoon made it quicker, although I was still sore, I think from sitting in the car immediately after the LR saturday. Had to run in the afternoon today, it was my first time since May doing so from what I remember. Not very sustainable time-wise, but it sure was nice to run in on a rainy fall afternoon.

| | LR on west river road. There was some sort of half marathon that was going to start later, which meant that even for a saturday, the traffic was nonexistent. I was running late again to be home, so it was amazing I got back so quickly and literally never had to stop on the way back. Using the course mile markers, I was able to identify one mile as being apparently 5:22 and thought I was in for a really big day. Turns out I averaged 6:06 which is slower than I thought I was going but on the whole was not a bad effort for 16.14 miles.

| | 6:43 pace farmers fields. I went fast for a couple minutes.
| | Beautiful day on east river. The trees are mostly bare now. It was 60 degrres on my morning run. 7:00 pace.
| | 6:57 pace, west river road. Nice cloudy, 40 degree morning. Love that weather.

| | My achilles has been feeling tight. I really should break out a new pair of shoes. 5:53 pace on east river road. It was really dark for a long time after I left at 7 am. I was really surprised to make it back in 5:47 pace, about a minute and a half faster than it took me to run out, because I was faced with an annoying (thats the level between inconsquential and brutal in the rankings I am creating as I write this) headwind and just felt tired and slow. I am guessing I made up most of it towards the end. I think even if I feel quick at the beginning of runs, its takes me a while to warm up to speed (for example, I made it to 18th in just 5:20, but got back from 18th in like 4:15 if I remember right, not even pushing it very hard). Just interesting. About 32 degrees. Got hazed eyes on the way back.
| | Boom island. 6:46 pace. Colder outside today, but it was plenty light because of daylight savings. I pulled out the new shoes to protect my tight achilles. There isn't much more than that that I can be doing (I'm also wearing my compression socks).
| | 6:58 pace on farmers fields, when I was actually running. I got a piece of sand or something stuck in my eye on Como avenue and I spent like 5 minutes trying to get it out then more time running with my head cocked and eyes at a weird angle before stopping again multiple times and finally getting it out on Gortner avenue. Yikes!
Achilles felt better.

| | 6:54 pace on east river flats. It was misty, wet, very warm weather. Great day for a run.
| | 6:55 pace on west river road. A gorgeous cloudy, humid day of just under 60 degrees when I ran. I soaked up the last warm day of the year!
| | Como classic, first day of winter lol. Windy but I guess the cold made me run faster? 6:41 pace. That's very surprising but double checked and is accurate.
| | Not bad. On a quiet, cloudy morning that was cold but not super (29 degrees ish), I ran 5:46 pace past wheelock parkway, onto trout creek trail, and then running the first part of gateway trail. Wind was blowing south so this route was probably a lucky call, cuz it usually was mild since I was going almost always due east or west. I felt pretty fast for most of it. I was surprised to not really feel fatigued until the last couple miles. Overall, this route which I've done before felt a lot shorter today than it has in the past. 5:39 pace on the way back. This was a good day to be my last harder effort before I race on thanksgiving. One other note was that I felt kind of "hot" going out, and didn't think I'd be able to hold it. Its weird how my body really does adapt, since those beginning couple of miles were actually my slowest of the day, and yet they felt the hardest. I think it takes a bit for your aerobic engine to kick into gear.

| | Boom island. It was snowing a good amount, so I was surprised to be going 7:08 pace. I expected a lot slower. My alarm didn't go off so I felt really nice this morning.
| | Just under 7 flat pace. More snow today. Ran around campus to avoid slipping.
| | 6:57 pace, boom island, more snow
| | More snow, more boom island to avoid slipping. Not too cold. 7:06 pace.
| | East river road. It was a very cold morning but I felt fine and enjoyed my run. 6:57 pace somehow despite snow all along the way.
| | Shorter run today because of the race next week. It was one of those days on west river where the snow and ice make it hard to get traction, so I only ran 6:34 pace.
| | 6:50 pace, west river road.
| | Just under 7:00 pace, tried Como classic for the first time since the snows.
| | Nice day for a pre meet as I had to wear a mask due to poor air quality. I'm not being sarcastic- I'm glad I only had to run 5 miles. Tried to run nice and slow, about 7:20 pace.

| Race: |
Ashburn Farms Turkey Trot (6.214 Miles) 00:31:55, Place overall: 1 | | A kind of chilly, damp morning to start out with but I didn't feel cold at all during the race wearing just my shorts, singlet, and gloves. Sunny and no wind. Crazy how a 10K seems like a quick race and one that hurts more in your lungs than your legs when your recent races have been further distances. The time was a bit dissapointing but not too bad. The 6.29 mile course according to mapmyrun put me at 5:04 pace or 31:29. Based on my rough experience with hills last time I was worried about today, but I guess with the pace I was going at, they were never a major issue. I really wanted the win for the money to buy new shoes. In addition to trainers, my vaporflies felt less springy today and should be replaced. The race strung out within a few hundred yards to being me and one other guy but he threw in a surge once we got to the top of the hill and I thought I was going to really have to work for the $100 difference between 2nd and 1st place. I passed him quickly at 1.25 miles or so, but at the 2.5 mile turnaround, he was lurking and kind of scaring me. At the next turnaround spot the gap increased, but I was still freaking out the last mile when we joined up with the 5Kers because every runner I heard in my periphery could have been him sneaking up for the win. Overall, it was a fun experience and kind of reminiscent of travel trips with the team as I flew here yesterday. I got like 2 hours of sleep last night but knew that wouldn't bother me too much for the race. My tummy was also topsy turvey while running. Nice to win my third race in three tries post-college, even given the level of competition. Not terrible for less than 3 months post surgery.

| | Beautiful drizzly morning on the W&OD. That trail has such a special place in my heart, which is weird because although I've been here five times over three years, I really haven't run there very many times total if you add it up. I felt faster than 7:09 pace but I think that happens after a race. Top of foot was sensitive again, so I did some exercises after.

| | Warm day to return to Minneapolis for an afternoon run after the flight, but my decision to run Resevoir woods was not the best given the melting snow. I actually took a different route home to avoid the muck. Didn't feel amazing- sore from the race, sore from the plane, foot still hurt, and felt hungry- but it was a nice day for a run. 6:39 pace.
| | About 7:00 pace on east river flats. That might be my last time I can run on that route this season.
| | Surprisingly 6:54 pace on west river road in the snow. Nice morning for a run. This fall has included a lot of days where my morning run by necessity has turned out to be almost as good as or even better than what I would have experienced in the afternoon- in this case, it would have been running at the tail end instead of the beginning of 5 inches of snow.
I am beginning a new plan to get rid of my old shoes, many of which are almost exhausted of mileage but not quite. I got 3 new pairs of Pegs today in the mail so it seemed like about time.
| | Just over 7 minute pace across the bridge to west river north. After 8 inches of snow I'm surprised I was able to run this morning.
Peg 38D (White) Miles: 9.00 |

| | Same route as yesterday. Similar snow situation.
Peg 38D (White) Miles: 9.25 |
| | East river road. About 7 minute pace. Unlike I remember, the Minneapolis side was actually much cleaner from the snow today.
| | Definitely made the right choice to run on Wheelock. Despite a little more snow last night, for the most part it wasn't an issue on that route for some reason. Season low 4 degrees on my run, and I had the wind coming at me on the way back but it wasn't an issue in terms of being cold (I was hardly cold at all) but rather just was annoying cuz it slows you down. 6:27 pace.
| | Just under 7 minute pace. Felt pretty loose and good. 25 degrees feels a lot better than 5 degrees haha.
Peg 38D (White) Miles: 9.25 |
| | 6:52 pace overall. 6:42 on the way back, due to five strides I did. West river road. It was like 10 degrees but since I was dressed for it and the ice wasn't bad, it was really not difficult.
| | Last run in this pair of shoes.
20 minutes in the middle of the run at 5:33 pace (3.66 miles). I was doing 3 on 1 off. Started out feeling great and slowly it felt harder. Wind and snow on the way back didn't help with that. Overall that was 4:30 of easy.
It was a good sign about my perception of fatigue, the weather, etc. that I made this workout happen, humble as it was,

| | Apparently I was feeling fast on this 8 degree morning on transitway (6:46 pace). The busses were going really fast so I was a bit concerned but thankully the sidewalks were fine and you have them for most of the way.
| | Como classic, 6:55 pace despite snow that slowed me down on the forest trail.
| | Longest run in quite a while I'd guess, and the furthest I've ever been on east river road. 6:01 pace. 5:54 on the way back with the wind at my back. I'll take it, given the snow that was on the road at times. Also for the first time I used GU after the halfway point and it was nice! Easy to open, and it honestly tasted delicious! Didn't cause any GI issues as expected and it may have helped me stay more physically in it.
| | Little over 7 minute pace, felt tired from Saturday maybe. Did Como classic via Hendon because I thought the soft surface path would be melty.
| | 6:50 pace apparently on west river road.

| | December 14, 2022- a day that will live in infamy in the known world. It was barely warm enough that yesterday it only rained for the most part, but this morning the ground was covered with like an inch or more of slush. It was just a non starter and I finally admitted my defeat, retiring to the treadmill for the first time this year. Cold temperatures and snowfall hadn't shaken my resolve yet, but on a warm morning with slush, I finally succumbed. It was not a very fun run, what with it having to be inside, and it's hard to know how fast to go to match your normal effort, and the fact that I couldn't use the bathroom of course made my bladder shrink tremendously. BUT I'm grateful that I've been able to stay outside till today and that I am healthy enough to run at all.
| | 7:08 pace is surprisingly fast for the mess that I was running through today on my boom island route. To prepare for future treadmill sessions, I took my pulse twice during the middle of the run and got it at 120ish when measured IMMEDIATELY after stopping. I think I typically go far too slow on the treadmill with that in mind.
| | 7:11 pace trekking through the snow
| | It was a bit of a frustratingly slow run. When there is snow on the ground like that it's just hard to get up to pace. I only ran 6:45 pace. Had snow and wind coming at me on the way back. At least it was outside.
| | 7:03 pace on east river flats. I didn't think I was going to be able to do this route until spring. I'll let my pace speak for itself in terms of how difficult the snow made it to run. |
| | 6:48 pace on west river? Don't think I messed up the distance. It was 4 degrees and sunny, so when the wind is at your back it felt great and when it is in your face it hurt kind of bad.
| | Ran on the treadmill for the 2nd time this year. It was -7 or so outside with not too much wind. The other reason was so I can do an impromptu workout. The workout was even more impromptu than I thought. I was planning on doing 4x5 min (essentially 1 mile) hard, with equal recovery. I did the first as a "warmup" in 5:35ish according to the treadmill. The second was in 5:10 or so. Then I thought really hard about what I was doing and how I don't trust treadmills. Earlier, I had taken my pulse and seen that on this treadmill. I was about 120 bpm going just under 7 minute pace today which lines up with reality. I thought to myself: since my perceived footspeed is clearly not a good indicator of how fast I am going on the treadmill, I am starting to use heart rate and the "talk test" as better measures. Another thing is: how HARD is the workout actually? In a real workout, it is a struggle to get to the end. Often times on the treadmill I am just twiddling my thumbs and waiting for the time to go down. At that point I realized I could probably just go three straight miles to end the workout, maxing out the treadmill at supposedly 5:00 pace. So I went ahead and did that. I think it was after that that I took my heart rate at about 150+. I also tested the neighboring treadmill and that pace felt similar. Anyway, if that was legitamate, I would be proud of myself for actually getting in a workout and actually doing well. However, I still wonder if at higher paces the accuracy is messed up.

| | 7:07 pace on coal mine road. Given the route and the circumstances, that's not bad.
| | 6:58 pace. Down past the church and onto the trail
| | Ran down to the bike path and then south along it. 6:05 pace overall, probably about 5:47 pace on the path itself based on my splits. From the outset I just couldn't get into a rhythm. Overall it was probably in the top 25 percent of most painful long runs. My quads were so sore from the hills I have been running here in Medford that each step hurt, which makes it hard to get rolling. When it was really uncomfortable was near the end which is hard anyway to gain a couple hundred feet of elevation after running 17+ miles. I tried to take a GU while running and got it open but gave up on taking it while going sub-6 minute pace. Good news is my grey shorts worked well to contain it on the way out. It was so misty that my eyebrowns got water on them rather than ice like they do in MN.
| |
| | 7:03 pace. Down to Hoover area.
| | 7:02 pace on a super beautiful rainy and warm Oregon day. Going past Aerial Heights and then winding my way down barely to get to the valley floor, that pace is almost hard to believe (that it's not slower).
| | Apparently only 7:18 pace on a similar but even more tactically flat course than yesterday. Seems odd.
| | Ran with Adam today. We started out going faster than I feel comfortable with, but apparently only ran 7:30ish pace overall which surprised me.
| | 6:47 pace (surprisingly) past the church onto the bike path. Maybe extra surprising given how sick my daughter was which meant I had an awful sleep the night before.
| | Ran (a different way) to the bike path and started my workout at the mile marker at the top of the hill. A painful 7:20 pace on the way back and chill 6:49 pace on the way there (4.68 miles each way). Did 10 miles hard. Was going to try for marathon pace (5:16) but that seemed a little daunting. Then I thought I should try to keep it under 5:30s, but that seemed uninspiring. A couple miles in, I considered the last time I did a 10 mile workout here (12/30/20). At the time I considered it an amazing workout, so I still remember each split. I decided to keep track of how I was doing and see how long I could go before getting "passed" by my 2-years-ago self (because that was a progressive run, I knew I would have the lead early on- e.g. first mile was 5:22 this time compared to 5:50 last time). This helped me stay focused and push hard. Splits: 5:22, 5:26, 5:23, 5:21, 5:24, 5:16, 5:19, 5:12, 5:14, 5:11. (Apparently there is 100 feet elevation gain on the way out though you can't really tell). According to my mental calculations, I was actually able to finish at (what I thought was) the exact same second as I did on that previous workout. Overall: 53:14 or 5:19 pace. One one hand, that was pleasantly surprising after how I felt the first couple miles. On the other hand, the olympic trials seem woefully out of reach after a performance like this. Once again I chickened out from taking my GU during the workout, but I did do it while actually running during my cool down. The ground was wet and a bit slippery due to the rain, but wind was not a major issue.
Also- last run of 2022! 3168 miles is pretty much tied for 3rd highest year ever.
