| | Wow, finally done with Ranger School and able to run again...it has been a while! I did 2 miles in 17:30 and felt a little winded. My joints hurt more than anything else, it was on a treadmill too. Anyway, hopefully within the next couple of weeks my body will be fully healed up and I can get back to the running shape I used to be in! |

| | Today felt pretty good actually. I ran the first 2 miles a little over 8:00 pace and then ran the last 2 miles at about a 7:45 pace. Then cooled down for 5 min. I felt pretty good today, obviously I was running a bit slower, but it still felt nice. I think one thing I have to start doing is breaking down the mental barrier again of running longer distances on a treadmill...it is hard for me! |

| | Took my first PT test since coming back from Ranger School. I was really surprised that I was able to run as fast as I did. 2 miles in 13:10! I was pumped. The rest of it was just little running that we do going back and forth from the training areas...oh by the way, I started Airborne school today. |

| | Good run today. About 2 miles were just a jog down to the 1 mile track and then we did some sprints on the track. 2x800m and 4x400m. My times were pretty good, I think I only got slower on one 400m. My first 800m was 3:03 and the second was 2:59. With the 400m's it went something like this 1:26 1:24 1:26 1:19. The rest was just a jog around an 8:00 pace there and back. I am definitely slower on the sprints then I was before, but this was a good workout to get back into shape. |

| | Today was a good run. I ran with Ethan (18 months) in our running stroller. I averaged an 8:23 pace, 42:15. Not great, but I had a running stroller so it was expected. I felt good and the stroller was probably a help to make sure that I wasn't running faster than I should have. However, I like to not be much slower than an 8:00 pace. Oh well. |

Alright another good run today. I felt very good! I am in Ohio now...came to drop off a few things before we move Heather and boys up here. I used gmap-pedometer to map out a 5 mile route. I like that website more than map-my-run....on another note I averaged my best time thus far a 7:27 which I was very happy with and finished with a 37:12.

AM: 5 mile run and did it at my fastest pace so far, 36:23. I averaged a 7:17 pace. After the first mile I could tell today would be a faster day. I had negative splits for my miles for the first time. I need to watch out for that 2nd mile though, it always is close. AM-Today's 5 miles was faster than usual, but I felt pretty good. I wasn't trying to run it fast, but my body just kind of went with it. I averaged a little less than a 7:11 pace and finished in 35:54. All in all it was a good run. | | Today was my long run of the week. I was a bit nervous because I haven't run this distance in quite a while, but I ended up better than I thought. My goal was to run in just a little over an hour. I was happy with a 1:02:00 goal. The course was pretty hilly a long down hill part, and a lot of uphill as well. Whatever goes down hill must eventually come back up here on Ft. Benning. The elevation ranged from 489 ft (above sea level) down to 266 ft. Doesn't sound like much, but man did it feel like it. | | Today's runs were split up due to the fact that we hardly ran for PT. We did the 2.75 miles and averaged something like an 8:00 pace. I am trying to bump up my runs this week to a minimum of 6 miles per day, so I came home and finished the remaining 3.59 in the five fingers. That is the longest distance I have run in them consecutively and it felt pretty good. I was able to keep a 7:15 average pace, so I am pretty sure I can be just as fast in these shoes as any other. I will still need to work up the distance and pace though. But distance first. It is looking like a beautiful spring day in Ft. Benning! |

| | Today was a little like yesterday. We did some interval training this morning with about a mile jog down to the track. Then two 800s and four 400s. Then about a mile jog back. The two miles we did on the interval hit 5:35 and 5:41 pace. We waited one minute in between the 400s and two minutes in between the one 800, we finished with the other 800. The running with the five fingers was nice. I can really feel it working different muscles in my feet and legs...interesting how that can happen without the big soles of running shoes. |

So we are in Ohio now! What a drive yesterday...wow, 9 hours with two babies still in diapers. We actually made great time and only had to stop twice!
I mapped out a run last night on my favorite mapping site...gmap-pedometer.com (a little plug for them) and did just over 6 miles. I averaged a 7:24 which I am happy with. The route was really hilly. More than what I am accustomed to. Amelia doesn't seem to be very runner friendly, there aren't any sidewalks and there isn't much of a shoulder to run on anywhere, oh well. Here were my splits:

I have taken the leap of faith and registered for my first marathon. It is the Rome marathon in the end of March. A few hours drive from our house and we are deciding to make a little family vacation of it through marathontours.com. Should be fun, now I really have something to work towards! |

Another good run today. I think with 4 miles I am pushing my limit running at an 8min pace in this altitude. For now I am okay with it. In a another couple of weeks I may try to speed it up a little bit. I also run on a 2% incline, I heard that is good for your joint and when your feet strike, it makes it a slight bit more challenging huh? GO USA!

It didn't feel too hard, but I didn't want to push it too much running a farther distance than I have in some time. I am feeling good though. I have been trying to read up on Heart Rate running and what not and what I have read has basically said that I need to run a little slower to keep my heart rate down to get a better aerobic workout. So today I did my 4 miles in about 34:20 or so. My average heart rate was 165 BPM. I think that is still kind of high, but then again I am at 7,300ft elevation. Hopefully that isn't horrible though, I think I am in better shape than that. |

| | A good run today. I wasn't able to turn the fan on myself so I was sweating up a storm! Because of that, and the fact I was on the dang metric treadmill my heart rate was up quite a bit. The average for my 5k was 165BPM. At about the 5k point, I decided I would try and figure out what my Max HR is. So, as best you can on a treadmill, I pushed the speed to about what I thought I could handle without falling off and kept that speed for 1 minute, then I cooled back down for a couple of minutes (probably too long) and then sped back up for another minute. Looking at my watch afterwords it said 187 as my max. Anyway, I don't think 1 minute was enough, and I think I rested a bit too long. Also looking at my watch for my 5k time, I just noticed that my MHR shows 190 BPM. All that work and I still wasn't able to figure out what I wanted to...

| | Today was a good longer run. Did a 10k and get my pace around an 8:30. My heart rate seemed to be a little lower today than usual, so hopefully there is a little bit of improvement. I leave today for FOB Shank to take over my platoon. Battle Co. 2d platoon, a very storied platoon for their last deployment. There is a documentary and book written about them from the last deployment. The documentary is called "Restrepo" and the book is called "War", written by Sebastian Junger. Check it out for a quick, intense read. Apparently elevation there at Shank is about 1,000ft lower (6,300ft), so hopefully that will be a help.

In the Army we are graded on how fast we can run our 2 mile. To get full points I have to run it in 13:00 and it was nice to see that I was able to do that today on a treadmill, at 6,400ft elevation, and on a "hill" workout on the treadmill. Cool stuff. FOB Shank Labor Day 10K (5.3 Miles) 00:41:07, Place overall: 8, Place in age division: 5 | | So obviously this wasn't a 10k, I am not sure why they advertised it as such, but by the time I finished I was sure glad there wasn't another mile to go! A couple of things got me on this one...1) I ran a 5 miler yesterday at a decent pace and a hill workout...by .25 miles I could tell my legs were heavy and this was going to be a bad day. 2) There were 2 large hills that I had no anticipated, it was bad. 3)A large portion of the run was on gravel rocks. That is what all the FOBs here are paved with to avoid all the dust. They lay down dump trucks full of gravel rocks. That slowed me down about a whole minute per mile pace. Yuck! Anyway, even given that I felt good about where I came in. I should have passed up one other guy but couldn't catch him on the final down hill and last 150m. His strides were longer than mine. I think I averaged a 7:46 pace, which is awful, but again the hills and gravel were a big reason for that. Oh well, I am feeling okay with my result!

Finally was able to get back to the gym. We were on a mission for a couple of days to help out in another AO. It was pretty awesome. 61 mortar rounds, 1 javelin rocket, 1 F-16 gunrun, and a bunch of machine gun and M4 rounds. We got some bad guys too, which makes it even better. And best of all, my platoon had no casualties!
I was feeling like I was going to do a slower run today, around 8:00pace. But I was feeling pretty good. My splits were:

I make a big deal about my 2 mile times a lot because in the Army, that is the distance we are tested on. For better or for worse, in order for me to get 100% in the running category I need to run two miles in 13:00. So I am always pumped to get that low. My best is an 11:52 and hopefully when I get back down to sea level and can actually run on ground instead of a treadmill I should be close to a 12:00 again.

| | Wow, i didn't even feel very sore today. Usually, after I run a fast two miles, the next day I am running at like a 8:30 average, but today I was comfortable at an 8:00. My average BPM was 155 which was nice to see. I can tell by looking at my BPM, that my heart is getting stronger and I can run at a bit of a faster pace and still keep the same BPM. Cool! I have also started to take some advice from Sasha. Something I read in the discussion forum. He mentioned once that he notices a lot of people getting really hyped up before races and how that is the worst thing that you can do. You only have so much adrenaline, plus you don't want to burn glycogen to early, all of which can happen if you get really pumped before a race. Also, what caught my attention, was he mentioned that most likely people were getting pumped up because they were listening to iPods which probably had very upbeat and tempo music. The past few days, I have stopped listening to upbeat music and settled for the good old Mormon Tabernacle Choir music and I have been able to focus so much more on my breathing, form, and just staying relaxed. I am not looking at the treadmill as much to see how far I have gone...it has been VERY nice. I think Sasha is on to something here!

Every 400m I would increase my speed until the last .25 I was at a 7:30 pace. It wasn't anything spectacular, and I know that I could have run that last mile and a half a lot faster, but I wanted to end on a high note, but not do something stupid and get injured or whatever. Three weeks in a row are encouraging, should be good for the next little while too.

I am not sure if my HRM was off a little bit, or I am just getting in better cardio shape. It was nice to see a 158 BPM as I was finishing with the 5 miles. Today felt good again. I am feeling a bit sore in my ankles but once I am warmed up it kind of goes away. I hope I am not injuring myself, but just my body getting used to the higher mileage. It isn't anything terribly painful, just a bit sore. Today's run was more of a recovery I guess. 8:00 warm up followed by 6.5 miles at 7:40 pace and a cool down .23 Also, does anybody know how to get the different category of miles on the blog? I have seen others that have Marathon Pace Miles, Threshold Miles, etc. I have no idea how to do that and I would like to be able to categorize my miles better. Thanks.

| | Long run today. I felt pretty good, a little sore from yesterday and this week (running outside is definitely different from on a treadmill), but other than that the run felt okay. I tried to keep my pace slower which isn't easy for me. It seems that my body is most comfortable with about a 7:30-7:15 pace, so I have to make a conscious effort to keep it slow. The course that I made today had 3 really steep hills and a couple little rolling ones so that affected my time from mile 4-7. I was proud of my splits the last 4 miles though. Well, first time running from home to work. I woke up at 0430 and was on the road by 0445 and made it to my 0600 meeting with time to spare. It is a nice run, but running on a little two lane road with cars that will go over 40mph can be a bit nerve wracking. I brought a head lamp with me to shine at the cars coming my way and I think Iwill keep that up along with wearing an extra reflective belt.

Well, today was my Marathon...Tuesday. I have changed my faster tempo day to Tuesday instead of Monday to give my body a little more time to recover from the long run on Saturdays. Today was an awesome run though and I am feeling pretty confident again. I originally planned on just doing 7 miles at my GMP, but felt good and ended up doing 8 miles. I was faster on all of my miles than my goal of 7:15-13 which was nice, but I know I can't do that when it comes to running the longer distances.

Today's run was good. I was definitely feeling a little sore in the legs from yesterday's run. It might also be from a very light leg workout in the gym yesterday too. But I was able to hit negative splits the whole way which is always a good thing.

Well, my Garmin isn't working for some reason after I finished my run. I can't turn it on... :(
So, I can't figure out my splits, but I was just under a 7:30 pace for the entire run. I have pretty much been averaging 1:06:00 for 9 miles. Hopefully I can get this thing working again!

The weather today was horrible! Rain and snow...I guess it was snowing bad on post because they closed it down which means they closed the gym and I wasn't even able to go run on the treadmill.
It stinks not being able to run and hit your goal...any tips or advice for running in a downpour? I wouldn't mind running in the snow, done that plenty of times in Utah, but when it is raining like crazy....I don't know about that. |

Well, I did it. I ran a half marathon today. I started off pretty slow, but ended up finishing with a 7:30 avg. That may have been too fast. Right around the 13th mile I felt really sick to my stomach and almost lost it. I am not sure why. How far do most people go on a run without any water? I wonder if I ran too far without water. Anyway, here are the splits.

Today was a great run. It was my fast run for the week and I ended up doing 9 miles just under my GMP. I did it in my new shoes and they were great; so light! My times were a lot faster than I intended and try as I might I couldn't really reign myself in so I just went with it and really surprised myself. My average was just under 7:00 minutes for the whole 10 miles. The first mile was a warm up, so I hit the last 9 miles well under a 7:00 pace.

| | It was nice and rainy here this morning, so I didn't run into work but ran on the treadmill during our PT time for 7 miles. I did it in about 7:30 pace. Later in the afternoon I finished with 2.5 miles in about the same pace. I think I am starting to get some little injury just above my right ankle. Some type of inflamation bugs me when I step. It seems to go away once I warm up, but I will ice it and keep some ACE Bandage on it. |

Today's run was good. I put the ACE bandage on my leg to keep it compressed and it felt fine during the run. I think I am going to continue to need to use this for the next little while. I will try and ice it at night time as well. I tried to keep my pace a bit slower to make sure I don't injure it even more.

Today was rainy all day, so I did the treadmill at finished averaging a 7:30 pace.
This weeked didn't get much done. We went to Slovenia and it was wet and snowy the whole time...8 inches in two days. It was great to be back in my mission country and see so many friends! |

Today's run was challenging. I went with one of my squads on a run this morning up to Monte Berico which had a .50-.75 long steep hill. My legs were jello by the time I was about 60m from the top. All in all we averaged an 8:00 pace for the six mile run. We had to stop and turn around and wait for a couple of soldiers who were really struggling....that is why I hate running with the army. No release runs, at least not here in Italy!
In the afternoon I did 4 miles on the treadmill in just over a 7:30 pace. |

| | Finally got an outside run in today! It was beautiful. The clouds have gone and the blue sky is back. It is a little colder with no cloud cover, but I will take it every day of the week if I could. My body is feeling a bit sore, but no injury pain which is nice. My right leg is feeling a lot better from a bit of tendonitis and some swelling off the lower part of my shin near the ankle. 60 miles! I did it, I finally hit 60. Wow, my legs were feeling a bit dead today. Well, I think I have pretty much peaked as far as my mileage goes. I will keep running longer runs on Saturdays in the future, but I just couldn't do it this week. So, I guess I haven't peaked, but I have built up to where I want to be on a weekly basis.
I will keep this up for another couple of weeks, and then start focussing more on speed and longer runs on the weekends. I sure hope by March I will be in good enough shape for a Boston qualifying time.

Finally ran into work again thanks to better weather. My legs are kind of tired, but I think I still finished with a 7:30 average.
I think my Garmin bit the dust, so for the next little while I won't be able to post times or anything which is really dissapointing. It would turn on when on the cradle and connected to a power source, but once off the cradle it would turn off and couldn't get it back on. Dang Garmins...such a good product but....ahh, they break all the time. |

Well, after taking a break last week (probably should have run a couple miles a day instead of stop completely) I am feeling much better. Last week my body just felt awful. It kind of felt like when I finished ranger school. During those 61 days you don't sleep enough for your body to do any kind of recovery, so every morning you don't really feel that sore or injured. But once you graduate and start eating and sleeping regularly again you start to hurt and it lasts two weeks or longer.
Maybe going pretty hard for the last couple of months without any real breaks was taking its tole. I really have started running seriously until last year so maybe these are "growing" pains as well.
Whatever it is I felt much better today. My Garmin 305 broke again and this time for good. So, I don't know my splits or anything else, but I mapped my run out on Gmaps-pedometer. Dang you Garmin, your watches are awesome, but they break all the time! |

Well, today felt pretty good until about mile 5.5 Then my right IT band started to get stiff and I could feel it in the outer portion of my knee. I have had IT band problems before, but it has been a few years and I had to take some serious time off to let it heal up...I don't want this to start again!
I stopped and stretched a couple of times before it got too painful to continue and that allowed me to finish my shortened run. I hope this doesn't continue!
The car said my route was 8.9miles and I did it in 1:04:40. I don't think the distance is very accurate because that would mean I was running close to a 7:15 avg and it didn't feel that difficult. I can't wait to get the GPS again... |

Well, got to the gym today. They weather has been awful again...so much rain. It has flooded here for the 5th time this year...goodness.
My right leg has sure been hurting. I think it might have to do with my overpronation...maybe these shoes aren't enough support. Being injured stinks! |
