Good run from the BYU Fieldhouse down Univeristy to the Riverwoods then up to Paslisades Dr. and down onto Carterville Rd. and back. Averaged 7:25. Felt pretty flat through first 3.5 miles. I think it comes from adding additional miles 6 days a week.

Welcome to the blog, it helps with the training, my goal this year is sub 3hrs too!

Started a nice run with Sasha, Jeff, and Ted. Ted and I ran 6 miles and finished with about a 7:27 average. We came back the last three miles at about a 7:06. After that run I went out with an Army buddy getting ready for Airborne school and did 4 miles with him at a 9 min average. All and all it was nice to hit 10 miles today. Hopefully I will be able to keep up this higher mileage.

Hit this at a 7:35 pace. I was feeling pretty tired and flat...probably from the higher miles the two days before. But I tried to stick to it and finished pretty good. Don't you hate having the urge to go to the bathroom during a run?! I hate it, especially towards the end when you don't want to stop. Haha, another fun event during a run!

Today was really flat the first half mile, but picked up. Ran with Sasha, Jeff, and Ted. Ted and I ran 6 miles and averaged a 7:16 pace. The last three miles we averaged just under 7 min. pace which was nice. I wasn't sure I would have it in me after a week with this many miles. I think that this is the highest mileage I have done in a week so I am feeling pretty pumped about it!

I do have a question if there is anyone reading my blog. Behind my right knee I have a sore spot. It kind of feels swollen or like a lump of some kind. It isn't in the knee itself, but behind the knee. I think that it might be tendonitis, because I can't really stretch my right ham string without it flaring up. Does that like tendonitis?

Today ran with Ted and Sasha. It was a good run for a Monday morning...always my worst day to run. We averaged a 7:35 pace with a faster last 3 miles then the first.

The movers came today to move all of our stuff down to Fort Benning, GA. It has been kind of crazy and we are glad it is over, but our apartment is so bare now! Oh well, we are still excited for the adventure ahead of us!

Ran today with Ted (LTC Leblow). We did a nice longer loop involving Carterville Road. We averaged a 7:27 pace with a slow first mile. For the final mile we picked up the pace pretty well. The first half mile was just under 7:00 pace and last half mile was a 6:05 pace. Incredibly enough the last mile actually felt better than the first 8.5! I don't know what it is, but I feel a lot better when we are able to pick it up in the end. Hopefully I can maintain that kind of pace for the 5K coming up in Orem this Saturday.

Today's 6 miles were pretty fast. Probably the fastest yet in a weekly run. Ran with Sasha, Jeff, Ted, and Tyler. We averaged 7:08 for the whole thing, but finished the last 3 in 6:48. It was rough, but it felt nice to have that mental confidence that I can run that fast!

Today ran with Ted and Vern, a friend from the Army ROTC. The weather was great, but once the sun came up it was a bit warm. We averaged about a 7:12 pace which was great. We finished the last two miles pretty fast which made up for the 6 others that were a bit slow. Our splits went something like this:

  8:10    7:22   7:22  7:23  7:20  7:18   7:00   6:27

It felt really good though, especially those last two miles. That should give me some mental confidence for the 5K Saturday!

Hey hey, look at that! Ran the 5k today and set a PR. 19:43. I was realistically shooting for some between a 19:10-30, my legs kind of gave out on me the last mile. But I am still pretty stoked about that finish. I know that a lot of the really good runners weren't out there so my measly time got 1st in my age division, but you gotta start somewhere! My previous 5k time was 21:00 and that is the only other race I have run in.

Today was  a good run with Sasha, Tyler and Ted. It didn't feel flat or sore even after the 5k. Hopefully my body is getting used to the mileage and pace now. Tyler also ran a 5k on Saturday and did it in about 16:16. He said the distance was probably a little short by 10 seconds or so. Man, that is quick! I have a long way to go if I want to run at that caliber...

We averaged a 7:24 pace and the miles splits were as follows:

   8:16   7:32   7:22   7:09   7:10   6:44

I just a new Garmin Forerunner 205. I love this watch! This past school semester I had been using Ted's and really fell in love with it. So finally I got one, or I guess my wife did for me as an early birthday present. It is so helpful to run with and I love setting it so that it shows my lap time every .25 mile. If anyone is considering purchasing a GPS watch, this is the one. It may look kind of big and bulky...but it doesn't feel it!

I ran today on my own in American Fork. My family stayed at my Mom's house to get ready to go to Georgia. I did an out and back 3 miles. The road I ran on was more hilly then what I normally run, I guess it was more like rolling hills. I tried to run it a little faster to see if I can hold a sub 7min mile pace for 5+ miles. I didn't quite hit, but maybe that was because of the hills. I averaged a 7:12 pace and my miles were as follows:

7:59   7:19   7:22   6:53   6:47  6:54

It wasn't as great as I wanted, but it was okay considering how hilly it was. I would like to be able to hit at least a 6:45 pace for at least 4 miles consecutive. Hopefully that will work here pretty soon.

Wow, can you say Humid in Georgia! By 7:00am it was so hot and so humid. After getting back I drank two glasses of cold water in an air conditioned house, then took a shower and was still sweating just a little bit after that. The run was much harder than I thought it would be. The humidity was tough to run hard through, hopefully it doesn't affect me too much!

It has been a while...sorry! Tuesday I was up at 5:30am to take my brother to Atlanta for an early flight, then Heather got into Atlanta late and it was a crazy evening getting things ready.

Wednesday the movers came...I should have gotten up and ran, but I was pretty exhausted from the day before and all the driving without a nap. Excuses basically!

Today was much better. The humidity is still getting to me. I did this run in 1:00:48 so that a 7:36 average pace. It was hillier than what I am used to running, so maybe that made a difference. I hope that I can bring down my times though, I thought the altitude adjustment would work better for me...we'll see!

Today's run was faster and I was grateful for it! I ran this one in 58:20, which made me got just a little over 8 miles. That was an average of 7:17, much better! I felt better this morning maybe because it was a little cooler, but still Georgia humidity. I ran a different course, I am just picking places to run. They have a river walk here on post that is nice. It is a straight shot from my house about 1:25 miles, yesterday I turned left, today I went right. It went by the National Infantry Museum and then along the 'Follow Me' golf course. It was pretty for so early in the morning. My miles were as follows:

8:23 (pretty slow, I tried to not got out to fast)   7:37  7:27   7:11   6:56   7:03   6:49   6:52

Almost four miles sub 7minutes, that is something that I am really shooting for on these long runs. Things look okay, I just need to try and keep it up here in the next few weeks!

Had our PT test today. It was a surprise for me when I showed up, but I should have realized a 0445 formation meant PT test. I did just about what I thought I would do except for my pushups. For whatever reason I started to get tired around 50 and just barely maxed with 76...I don't know in the world happened. Situps were good and my two mile run was 12:23. The course measured 2.02 and when my GPS watch beeped for the 2 mile I was at 12:14. The course was a full mile loop so your ran around it twice. There were like 300 people on the track at the same time so it was a bit slow and crowded...oh well.

Later in the evening I went an ran the other mileage...I am really embarrassed to put down the time that I ran it in, so I am not. Needless to say, don't go running right after you eat dinner. At least wait more than 15 minutes :(

Woke up early and did 3 miles on my own with a 7:35 pace and then as a Platoon we did the other mileage at the ridiculously slow pace of 9:53 average. This morning I woke up early and couldn't fall back asleep so I went out for a run and got 7 miles in before PT. My average pace was a 7:30, a bit slower than I would like. I was hurting the last two miles. Running our here is a little bit more hilly than what I have been running back in Utah, rolling hills that is. Then for PT today we did two miles but in intervals. It was a crossfit workout so we did a bunch of core stuff and then did laps around the track. It was good. I was glad I had a good workout before PT!

They were heavy to run with and a bit uncomfortable. Our average pace was a 10:37. At the end we broke off and ran on our own for the last 1/8th of a mile up a hill and back to the PT area. I took off and was first to finish and at some point hit a 4:44 pace (according to the GPS). It was good to get some time for a fast portion of the run.

Today was a good run. I ran with a buddy Charlie who is down here with me. He is trying to get into shape for our Ranger PT test that will come in about a month. We ran five miles together and did that in about 8:25 pace or so. It was slow for me, but it gave me mileage and somebody to run with. For the Ranger PT test we have to run 5 miles under 40min. which won't be difficult for me but Charlie is having a hard time. Good thing we have a month and I can help him.

After we got back home I went out and ran two more miles at a pretty quick pace. I ran the first mile in about 6:21 and the second in about 6:23. It was nice to be able to run quick. I am noticing my ability to run longer distances at that quick pace is falling off. I was pretty exhuasted at the end of those two miles. I know it came after 5 miles, but it shouldn't have been that hard. I can't wait for BOLC II to end!

About three miles into it my IT band in my right knee started to bug me. I had to cut my run short and meet up with Charlie. He did the 5miles, I did less. Hopefully my knee just needs to warm up and it will be okay! I am grateful to be back running again, hopefully I can get the mileage up a bit more again this week.

Had a 0230 formation for night MOUT OPs. Ridiculous. Anyway, we did end up getting off early, so I went to the gym and ran five miles. It was a lot harder than it should have been, I think I am still recovering. I was able to get one mile at about 6:30 pace. It took me a couple miles to get warmed up though. Tomorrow is our 10mile ruck march so I may count that as a bit of a run tomorrow.

Glad you are feeling better! Hope the IT Band behaves, try some hip opener yoga poses before and after running, they will work miracles for you---I PROMISE!!!

Have fun tomorrow on the ruck march. That does not even sound fun.

First run for a long time. This whole week we were out at the FOB running missions for like 19 hours a day. There was a lot of sit around time which could have been concolidated so that we could have had some PT. I felt it today though, my cardio was not where it has been and my legs felt like cement. PT test is on Tuesday...I hope I can get 2 miles in under 13min. We'll see!

I ran today for the first time during the week in a while. Hopefully this week and IBOLC will be better for running. The first two miles I ran, I paced a friend from my Platoon here at BOLC II. She runs really slow and needed someone to pace her. Lets just say we ran two miles in 20:45 and she didn't pass...wow it was painfully slow.

Later tonight I went out and just ran two miles on my own to see if I am still able to get it under 13min. I did it in 12:50 and was feeling pretty tired. I have lost a lot but hopefully tomorrow morning when I run my PT test and compete in the Iron Voyager I will do well!

So this morning I competing in the BOLC II Iron Voyager competition. You had to be able to max the PT test in the 27-31 age category for push-ups and sit-ups (which is harder) and the 21-26 for the run (13:00 for two miles). I ended up doing pretty well and maxed all of the that, then we did pull-ups and dips to make the PT test worth 500 points. I ran my two miles in 12:50, it is a bit hard, but I am fighting through the pain and the slugishness of not doing anything for the past 7 weeks. I ended up with a 511 and it was a lot of fun! Another Battalion coin to add the collection.

Today was our Battalion graduation run. We did about 5 miles averaging a 9:00 in mile. Pretty slow, but I was able to be a road guard and get a little more sprinting which was a better workout. It was nice to get a little longer run in. Things should start to lighten up so I can get back to doing some more running!

It was SO nice to get out and run today. I almost hit running every day this week...and really should have not missed Thursday. I am glad that I don't have any field time in the next little while, hopefully I can start picking up my mileage again.

Today I felt pretty sore and tight from running so much yesterday. At mile 4 I saw my wife Heather and finished running back with her, except for the last .75 mile. I was averaging a 7:30 to that point and felt pretty good about that given I haven't run this many miles in a few weeks. I finished the last .75 miles at a 6:12 pace, so I got a little speed in and ended up averaging a 7:43 pace. My miles went something like this:

Had an early formation this morning to start IBOLC inprocessing. That went pretty well and it was very organized. Already I am thinking this course is going to be ten times better than BOLC II.

After we were released (about 1700) I went to the gym and ran and then did a little 10min. cross fit workout. I started with an easy warm-up mile and then hit two miles in 12:45 and the cooled down. I have another PT test tomorrow so I wanted to make sure that I could hit a sub 13:00min two mile again.

Finshed this RAW, Ranger Athlete Warrior, assessment today. We started with benching 185lbs as many times as possible and then dead lifting 225lbs as much as possible. When I got to the dead lift, I started to pick up the weight and something in my lower back/behind popped and I stopped. I am pretty sure it is just a pulled muscle of some kind, but it made me pretty nervous!

After that we did this thing called a 'beep drill'. You put a CD in a car and use 20m with a line on both ends that you have to run to every time it beeps. It progressively gets faster and when you can't reach the line twice in a row, you are out. The mile ended up being around 10min. but we were sprinting in the end to try and reach that dang line. It was pretty intense!

Couldn't get out for another run unfortunately...

Treadmill running is definitely different from the great outdoors. On the road you must exert force against the ground to move. On the treadmill the ground moves out from under you and you need to keep up. So the feeling is different and even the way the muscles are used is slightly different. Plus the somewhat claustrophobic feeling of some of the treadmills and the tedium. Still good for you if you can't get outside. Put the incline at 1 percent and see if that is any different.

Today was a pretty easy run. We did it as a platoon and averaged about a 8:45 min. pace. The last .25+ was a release run and my GPS watch showed the fastest that I hit was a 4:45 pace, but obviously that was only maintained for a few seconds.

It was nice to get a bit of a sprint in there at the end and get a decent distance in as a platoon.

I finished the last two miles in about 12:52. That was nice to be able to max a PT test run with the final two miles of a 5 mile run. I felt good today, that was refreshing!

After work, I went to the gym and did the other 3.8 on a treadmill. The treadmill is getting a little easier and easier to run on, but I can't imagine doing any more than five miles on it...it would kill me!

It was great. We had to do it with all of our crew serve weapons as well, and each squad had their own M-240B. I carried that for 3 miles and the SAW for 2 miles. The first time I was able to run since last week. I bruised my knee so it has been stiff and swollen the past few days. It should be healing up nicely now though. I graduate IBOLC on Thursday and will start Ranger School on November 1st!

Had a good run today with the Company therefore it was a little slow. We did it in 37:28 with an average of 8:21 over the whole run.

I graduate IBOLC today! That will be nice, but Ranger school is lurking right around the corner. I am excited to go and learn about myself and what I am capable of, but I know it is going to be the hardest thing I have ever done!

Did a hilly 5 mile run today. Trying to get ready for the Ranger PFT and Ranger School which I start next Sunday. I had a decent time, considering I haven't run consistantly for a little while. I finished in 37:57. I will run another 5 miles tomorrow morning for an RPFT so hopefully my run today won't have a negative effect for tomorrow.

Took the RPFT today and it went well. The 5 mile run was faster for me today although I was definitely feeling a little sore from the run yesterday. I have lost quite a bit, being sore after a five mile run is pretty bad. In May I was running a minimum of 6 miles a day with a couple of 10 mile days and wasn't getting sore at all...goodness, the Army isn't always conducive to longer running, at least not in TRADOC.

I ended up running a 36:01 which was about a 7:12 average. It was pretty rainy today as well, so I should feel a bit encouraged.

Well, this wasn't a run nor a ruck march, but we did ANOTHER land nav iteration. They weren't even scoring it today and it didn't matter how many points you got, so a buddy of mine and I just kind of walked around and got the closest points we could in order to get back in 4 hours. They score sheet had nine points and we got five of them. I can only imagine how much further we would have gone if we would have tried to get all nine points...it would have been a long one!

Today went out on a run with Heather and pushed Ethan in the stroller. We went pretty slow, Heather is 20 weeks pregnant, but still able to job a little bit.  We averaged about a 10:10 pace. It was nice to go at a slow pace and get some miles down. Sunday is Ranger School!

Did a little three mile run today, just to make sure my body is a well oiled machine for Ranger School! I took it easy the first half and picked it up a little bit the rest of the way.

This is my last post before going to Ranger School, the next post will most likely be sometime around Christmas. Wish me luck!
