Hey Colby, good to see you are on the mend. Sounds like you are doing the smart thing, unlike what I usually do (come back too fast).

Thanks Joe, this injury thing stinks. I can't believe something so tiny and insignificant can keep me grounded for so long...I think my BQ is out the window for this Rome race...

Finally started to feel good. I had to take last week off to make sure this thing gets fixed. I also finally got my new Garmin 305, so hopefully this will work out. I averaged a 7:48 trying to keep it light. Has been feeling okay today, so hopefully I can keep up this run throughout the week.

Today's run was good. Same as yesterday, but this time I had four of my soldiers with me. We went slower because they aren't in the best running shape, but it was probably good for me to keep it slow as my leg isn't fully healed.

Went out today a little farther. Felt pretty good, I am still running with an ACE Bandage around my leg. I think I ran faster than I would have liked too, but I didn't have my GPS watch so I just timed the total run. I think I averaged around a 7:15-20. The last .5 mile I ran was 3:20, which is definitely faster than I would have liked. HOpefully next week and can be back running 6 days a week and more than 30 miles.

Wow, I think my leg is officially out of action. Today's run was short, but faster than it should have been and my leg is no good.

I cancelled my run in the Rome marathon. It has been too stressful with this injury. I keep trying to come back and run before I should so that I can still be in shape for the Marathon, but my leg isn't healing and I won't be in the kind of shape I need to be in for the Marathon. It is a sad day.

However, now I will just let my leg heal and slowly start building the mileage back up and see if I can hit a Marathon up in the Fall. Maybe Ljubljana or Florence? I haven't seen the schedulel yet, but we'll see. It feels like a ton of bricks has been lifted off my shoulders though!

I just saw you had planned to run in Rome in march, it would have been a great opportunity to meet in person. I have just recently joined the blog and I didn't expect to find another "italian" blogger.

I am really sorry for your injury, it is really frustrating especially during a marathon preparation.

Keep cross training and Florence (or any other marathon in Fall) is not that far away.

Thanks for what you do.

I stayed away from the jump rope because of my leg.

PM: 30 minutes on the eliptical...I am knew to that machine so still getting used to it, but I got a pretty good workout and did a little over 4.5 miles. Occasionally I will get going really fast for about a minute and do that every few minutes.

Still taking time off for this nasty shin splint...I have been trying to hit the eliptical every day. I have been trying to do some good speed work on it by going for a few minutes really fast then slowing down for a little. I am still very unsure as to what kind of workouts are good on an eliptical. I don't think my leg muscles are accomstomed to it either, but that is getting better with every workout. Hopefully I can keep some kind of cardio for when I get back to running. Hopefully the second week of Feb.

Comment on an earlier post... I was never as good at road marches as I thought I should be given my running background. Whenever I did timed 12 mile road marches I'd usually finish mid-pack whereas I always won every timed 5 mile run. etc.

I think it was mostly my feet. Never did find the right boot/sock combo. I did IOBC in in late Fall, Winter so we had very few ROTC guys - mostly older OCS graduates. Lots of Ranger/SF guys in their late 20s. Those guys could road march!

From Colby Park on Mon, May 30, 2011 at 12:01:10 from 87.0.66.119

For some reason I don't usually have any problem with road marches. But then I don't typically come in first either.

Maybe you just had a large expectation to finish first because you could with all your running. You were probably a great road marcher, but maybe you had really high expectations?

Sounds good to me Colby. Do you ever run on a treadmill? It's a good way to test your limits - knowing that you can hop off at any minute if the pain starts to return.

I just got done with a book called "The Heart and the Fist" by a guy named Eric Greitens. Check it out on Amazon. It's the first book I've read in a while where I was actually underlining and highlighting key passages. Really good stuff.

Hey, I only count one amazing boy in your picture. Isn't it about time for an updated photo?

I like the new picture Colby AND I'm glad you're running pain free.

I assume you do additional stuff during PT right? Ever think about posting those workouts as well?

Oh yeah... isn't earning an EIB considerably easier than earning a Ranger tab?

From Colby Park on Sun, Jun 05, 2011 at 13:50:26 from 80.117.68.71

Rob, I haven't been doing any additional PT the past couple of weeks. Just upping my miles and getting back into the swing of things. But I can definitely start posting workouts that we have been doing.

Every day I've been doing a push-up set of 40-30-20-10 just to stay fresh. Then I do 11 different ab exercises, each with 30 crunches, so that keep the abs working. Sometimes I finish with another 40-30-20-10.

I should be good to go this week with whatever is going on. I am going to try for 2.5 miles a day now.

And with EIB...it isn't similar to Ranger School in any way. Just knowing a lot of basic infantry stuff. It is still pretty hard though!

Ran two miles at PT test pace. I am still getting back into the swing of things and finished with a 13:30. I started off really slow and booked it at the end. It felt nice to let the legs out a bit. The last three laps pulled it together and finished with a 13:30.

From there I just ran two laps on the track at a nice comfortable pace. My GPS died on me on lap one of the two mile, so I didn't get any good info...

"Monthly" PT test huh? I just did my YEARLY PT test a couple months ago.

That's a great time for you after just coming off injury though, your fitness should return pretty fast once you can start running some good miles again.

From Colby Park on Thu, Jun 09, 2011 at 00:20:47 from 139.139.35.70

Joe, I just give my guys a diagnostic PT test every month so they know where they stand and what they need to continually improve on. It keeps them away from yo-yoing with PT test related fitness.

From SlowJoe on Thu, Jun 09, 2011 at 14:24:49 from 132.3.53.68

Probably a good idea. You'd like to hope everyone can be a big boy and stay in shape on their own, but that is rarely the case, at least in the AF.

From Colby Park on Fri, Jun 10, 2011 at 00:47:52 from 139.139.35.70

It happens a lot here too, that is why I do this with them each month. I don't think the PT test is as important with us as it is in the AF though. It is more a pride thing!

Well, run #1 in these Reebok shoes. I can't believe that I would say that Reebok has a good running shoe, but I think they have done a pretty good job with this one. You've probably seen the ads for this shoe. It has the 76 or however many "buddies" on the bottom. It flexes and moves very well and is designed to help you run more "naturally" on your forefoot.

They are extremely light. The upper is basically just a thin peice of fabric, no real protection, just a suede fabric. So far I am pretty impressed...as hard as that is for me to say with a Reebok.

Today was actually a 12 mile ruck. We have to complete it in 3 hours. The ruck sack weighed about 40lbs with water at the start. But it rained on us a couple of times so I think the ruck actually got slightly heavier. I ended up averaging a 12:38 pace and finished in 2:29:50. That is one of my faster 12 mile times. I felt pretty good. One of these days I will be able to run the whole distance, but I am not in that shape yet. Two guys did, one finished in 1:50 and the other guy in 2:07 I think. That is flying!

Congratulations on the EIB.

I read Sebastian Junger's book "War" over my vacation.I figure since Iraq, and now Afghanistan, look to be winding down now that they will soon fall into the "history" category. As a history teacher I should probably understand them right?

Anything you've read that captures well the military aspect of either in your opinion?

From Colby Park on Wed, Jun 29, 2011 at 09:54:00 from 139.139.35.70

Rob, funny you mention "War". That is the platoon that I am the PL for. A lot of those guys were still here for the past deployment. A lot have PCSd now. Now SGT Sterling Jones, just left. He was a fairly large character in the book.

That book really does a great job of pointing out what Afghanistan is about. Try and find the documentary, "Restrepo" that is the film version of the book. Netflix has it I think. The other book I would suggest is "Not a Good Day to Die" by Sean Naylor.

It clearly depicts the "over confidence" of our forces in the beginning of the war and how some of the "higher-ups" were looking out for themselves and not their troops. That might be a large and unfair generalization. But you see clearly the fog of war and other issues with the planning. "War" and "Restrepo" help you see what it is like to deal with Afghans in a very truthful (unfortunately) way.

From SlowJoe on Wed, Aug 17, 2011 at 13:52:47 from 132.3.53.68

My legs pretty much never move that fast. Just surviving summer right now, and will start official marathon training next month. Will be gunning for the 3:05 BQ but not nearly in shape for it yet.

How about you, any plans to ramp back up for a marathon? Looks like your comeback is going well so far.

From Colby Park on Wed, Aug 17, 2011 at 14:03:46 from 79.44.179.48

Just trying to get back up to the mileage I will need to run the marathon. It is going to take a while to build back up, but this time I am not going to rush myself by scheduling a race. I'm just going to let me body tell me if I need to back off, and not feel the pressure of needing to continue.

3:05 will be a great time. What is your training plan going to look like?

From SlowJoe on Wed, Aug 17, 2011 at 14:12:52 from 132.3.53.68

I like your plan, we've probably all been guilty of pushing too much, too hard, too soon.

3:05 would be an 11-minute PR, so possibly over-ambitious, but that is the stated goal for now. I'm using a Pfitzinger plan from his book Advanced Marathoning -- basically a ton of miles, with a few tempos, speed and long MP runs mixed in.

It obviously isn't as accurate, but I am pretty sure it is close. My legs are feeling pretty dead from yesterday, but I am fine with that. I am just glad I was able to run as many miles as I did this week.

Another great Saturday run. Today was a fast run. It wasn't intentional, but I just found myself running in the low 7s and even the high 6s. My body just wanted to run fast today. I tried to relax a little, but ended up just going with it.

Good run on Sept 11th. I wanted to get out, even though it was Sunday, as part of a commemorative run. Ran with a couple other of my Officer buddies. One of them was a very accomplished Cross-X runner in high school, running a 15:35 as a junior in 5k. He had some injuries his senior year and would have been able to walk on at Duke, but he decided to go to West Point instead...bad decision in his opinion, haha.

Anyway, he wanted to run faster today, but it killed me. I didn't sleep well last night and hadn't eaten much during the day, so I felt pretty weak.

Wow, today was a good run. I ran with my buddy again and we did a warm up 7mins then 5 min quick followed by 4 min cool down, the 4 min quick, followed by 3 min cool dow, etc. We finished with about a .5mile cool down. I was pretty consistant during the quick portions running at 6:10-35. Cool down was probably around 8:45ish pace.

Was up early to listen to the BYU game online...wow, was that pathetically needless. I can't believe this team...I mean come one, your offense has been hyped all year long and through three games your average scoring is 11 points (offensively). Give me a break Brandon Doman and Jake Heaps...

Wow, before that turns into a rant I better get back to running. I stopped listening to the game after the 8th fumble and tried to go back to sleep. It was around 6:30am, I couldn't sleep because I was so frustrated, so I got up and went for a run. It felt really good and my times were a little faster than normal. Maybe because I was so upset?

AM- Did a bit of a longer morning run today. I could feel my knee very slightly through the first mile or so, then it went away. I am not sure if it just needs to warm up a little bit and it is fine, or if there is another kind of healing process at work. I wanted to make today a little longer than the other days. I need to be running 5 miles in 40min or less by the end of November. I think after today's run I should be fine as long as I can stay injury free.

Well, a beautiful run through the heart of (ancient) Rome. We are here for the 4 day weekend and the weather is beautiful. We found a nice apartment for a great price about a quarter mile from St. Peter's, so I took a ran to scout out our plans for tomorrow. I ran through St. Peter's square and down past the Forum and Palantine Hill around the Colloseum and back.

Although a beautiful run, Rome is not runner friendly. With all the cobblestone, marble, and traffic it made for an interesting run, but I won't complain about being able to get out!

I am feeling good right now and during the run too, so it looks like I am probably capable of adding to my mileage a little bit next week.

Today I ran with a buddy who ran X-country in college. He is pretty quick, much faster than I am for a comfortable jog. It was hard to keep up and a little faster than I wanted to run today since we take a PT test tomorrow, but I was glad to get in a fairly long run.

Got in to Ft. Benning late last night. Couldn't sleep for very long this morning due to jet lag and got up early to run. The weather was nice and the run was good, especially after about 13 hours of flight yesterday.

Today was our PT test. We did a bit of a warm up and cool down run with the 2mile run inbetween. I was very disappointed in my two mile time...not sure why I ran so bad. It may have been the time change or the fact that it was raining hard this morning. Who knows, but I was not proud of my time.

Today was the 5 mile test. Needed to do it in under 40min. but really trying to make sure I am closer to the front of the class in finishing time than toward the back. Ended up running about a 35:25 and felt okay with it. I told myself before the run if I was able to run around a 35 min, I would be happy. I may have been able to run closer to a 35:10 or so, had I pushed it a little harder.

Today was our 12 mile ruck march. I did it in my fastest time ever with a 2:22:16. My ruck weighed 41 lbs (not including water weight). It was nice.

Today was a smoker! We were in full uniform plus body armor and did this 6 mile run through the woods and up and down muddy hills. We were completely covered in mud due to rain the day before. I think our first mile was something like 6:15 wearing boots and all this gear...goodness it was rough. But all in all it was good and I kept up near the front the whole time.

Today we did the RPAT (Ranger Physical Assessment Test). Wow, I have never done this before and it was a challenge. You start off in full unifom (ACUs, boots, helmet, and body armor) and run two miles. Then you climb a 20 foot rope once, drag a skedco (litter) with 185lbs for 100 meters, then climb a 20 foot caving latter, then a 200m sprint (jog really), and then get over and 8 foot wall. If all of that wasn't enough, you finish with a final mile run. My time was 27:16 which was the second fastest in our class. That was great PT, but it was sure a smoker.

First run back in Italy. Felt pretty good. Toward the end of the run my knee started to get sore. I think part of it was from how cold it is here right now. Everything else felt great though and it is good to be back.

Back from Istanbul and a few days off. It was a pretty slow run with a few of the guys in Headquarters. I tried to push them, but they aren't in the greatest of shape.

Today I did some interval training and ended up cutting it a little short. I think I am coming down with something. I woke up this morning feeling kind of sick and achy. My initial plan was to hit 2x400m in 1:30 or less, then 2:x1600m in 6:05 or less, and finally finish off with 2x400m again 1:30 or less. I wanted to hit negative splits on my 400m and my second mile faster than the first. I ended up cutting out the second 1600m, but I did get all my 400m times faster and my 1600 was 6:10. It was slower than I wanted, but it was really cold and I am really not feeling well.

Hopefully the run will flush out all the bad.
