It's been a minute. 2024 was an awful year for me, running-wise. I didn't quite hit 50 miles for the whole year. I picked up an old-but-much-better-bike in May and rode fairly casually for most of the year. Around December I decided I was going to race and began more structured training.
Every time I tried to run, my knee complained. I did a PRP injection with no improvement. I was diligent with my PT work. It was just flat-out worse after the surgery than before.
I had one more MRI in December that didn't really show anything too exciting. Doc finally agreed that patellar osteoarthritis is the cause of my pain. Plica syndrome has returned but in a more medial location than before, and the location doesn't align with my symptoms at all.
Doc suggested I try switching to a fore-foot strike and taping my knee to keep the patella from getting pounded into the damaged cartilage. Surprisingly, it's been effective. I'm taking things very slowly, but I'm able to run 4 miles a few days a week without pain. I've ditched the tape and am just sticking to the forefoot strike.
I've been training 10-12 hrs a week on the bike and have developed some decent fitness there. Entered my first road race and might race here and there again.
Ultimately my hope is that I can increase my running volume enough to start workouts and then races. I plan to continue supplementing with cycling, but maybe if I can work up to 8-10 miles 3-4 days a week, I can eek out some decent running fitness. We'll see. One day at a time.

Calves were sore but fine. Still adjusting to forefoot striking. My right knee complained just a bit, but I don't think it's a big deal. Very different pain from the patellofemoral stuff, but keeping an eye on it.

| I got really sick of knowing it's been 6 years since I started a race. Really, really sick of it. So I'm not anywhere near in shape but hopped into a 5k to get that monkey off my back.
The race was held on the Utah Crits cycling race course in Sandy. Closed loop and was supposed to be 1.25km per lap, but it was short. I was immediately skeptical of the length when I saw the start/finish would be in the same spot, so I trust my watch (3.00 mi) over the non-certified course in this case.
The race was pretty straightforward. The top-2 started at 5:30 pace and I knew I couldn't handle that. It looked like I'd have 3rd pretty well wrapped up after the 1st lap was done, so I eased up just a little. 5:47/5:53 splits for miles 1 and 2.
Going into the final lap there was noone close to me. There was a little more in the tank if I'd had to, but I'm really glad I didn't. It was a tough lap. Finished in 5:53 and spent a few minutes gasping for air.
Fun course that I definitely want to come back to. Maybe even bring the bike next time and hop in the crit afterwards.

Saw a very young fawn bedded next to the trail just before it goes over I-15. I stopped to go back and see if it was alive. It slowly opened its eyes, saw me, then jumped up and screamed before running away. Gave me a good chuckle.
