1st run - I've got a little catching up to do on the blogging, but I got a few good workouts in during Christmas break. I missed a couple of runs, which wasn't good, but it was partly because my heart stopped for about 4 seconds while I was playing basketball with my family one day. Yeah, it stopped. It scared the living daylights out of me, but supposedly this is a normal phenomenon among athletes. Yikes!

Anyway, I ran 8 miles this afternoon in the glorious snow. 64:xx total time. I ran into Sasha on the trail running with one of his girls and chatted for a bit. I'll have to add a few more miles tonight.

2nd run - Added an easy 4 tonight. The roads were slippery - average pace was about 8:20.

AM - 3 easy miles this morning. Again, the pace was at least 8:15.

PM - I showed up at the track this afternoon to run mile repeats with the team. I think that my expectations for myself just got bumped up a notch. I've been doing these on my own at around 5:00/mile thinking that I was doing a good workout. Today I averaged 4:49.

So after my workout Saturday, my confidence was lacking quite a bit. One of these days I'll get around to blogging it, but I ran 2xmile on the short track in 4:50 and 4:46, and it felt difficult. I was worried that I had lost fitness from being at sea level and missing some of my workouts. Coach wanted the slowest guys to start at 4:52 and work their way down. I figured I might be able to average 4:55 for the entire workout.

I started with a few of the rear guys, and came through the first one in 4:52. I felt very sluggish and didn't think I could run another that fast.

The second rep felt much better, and I didn't pay much attention to the time, but just to stay with the guys I was with. 4:45 on that rep. I was shocked. A little too fast, but I didn't start to tire till the final lap.

The third one was more conservative, and we ran a 4:49. Again, I didn't start to tire too bad till the final lap. The fourth rep was a lot more difficult, and the last two laps felt closer to race effort. I lost contact with the two guys I was with, but finished in 4:49 and was happy with it. They were 4:45ish.

So I am very pleased with this workout. It gives me confidence that I can run considerably faster than last race. The team is running a tempo on Thursday, but I figure I'll sit it out in the interest of saving my legs for my last shot.

Something very bad happened today. I slipped on an icy sidewalk and hurt my knee. I had it X-rayed and it's not broken, but it's in a lot of pain. Lots of swelling. Too much to run on. I'll have to rest up and see if it will be usable by Saturday, but I doubt it. I asked the doctor about getting a cortisone shot, but she laughed at me. Yeah, laughed at me. No sense of urgency in these doctors.

So I swung by Eyestone's office, he didn't seem too concerned about it. Just let it rest and heal up, either I can run Saturday or I can't.

I'm bummed.

No change in my knee from yesterday. I can't bend it more than about 15 degrees. I've kept ice on it as much as I can, but it's still swollen. I'll be able to run on it by late next week, if I'm lucky.

This isn't looking good. I notice very little improvement over yesterday - my range of motion is still incredibly limited. I'm keeping ice on it, but it is healing a lot slower than I'd hoped.

Anyway, I went to the track to watch the men's 3k. Brandon Hebbert won in 8:31ish. The guys I was with during the workout with finished in low to mid 8:40s. It was fun to watch. With luck I can be racing again in a couple weeks. ISU has a meet in 2 weeks, I'm tentatively planning to run it. Some UVU guys I talked to today are going to drive up and split a hotel room and invited me to come along if I'd like.

Bummer! Sorry to hear about the hurt knee. Hope you have a swift recovery and are able to run @ ISU!

From Phoenix on Sun, Jan 11, 2009 at 13:03:02

I'm sorry you messed your knee up. You were ready to roll.

Icing, as you have done, is critical for the first 48-72 hours because there is usually continued internal bleeding and injury development. After the acute phase of the injury is over, increasing blood flow to and fluid exhange within the join will promote healing. Anti-inflammatories can impair healing.

If it were me, I'd do some very light biking as soon as its not painful. Not to workout, but to increase blood flow and clear out the knee.

As always, continue to consult with your doctor.

Some of the range of motion is coming back. I went to the weight room to use an elliptical, but didn't realize there are only 4... and I came at the worst possible time. I'm getting up early tomorrow so I can make sure to get a workout in. I tried a bike, but I couldn't bend my knee enough. I tried to jog a little, but it couldn't take the weight. It was frustrating.

My brother who ran 1:49 for 800m used to do uphill power-walks on a treadmill when he was injured and couldn't run. He could get his heart rate up to running levels.

From tyler on Tue, Jan 13, 2009 at 14:10:47

That might be better than the elliptical. Walking up stairs is difficult, though, I might not be able to do a hard climb.

AM - Got to the weight room right at 6 so I could claim my elliptical. Did an hour on it, and managed to keep my heart rate between 140 and 145. I've measured it at about 140 on training runs, so hopefully this will help me preserve some of my aerobic conditioning. It's disgusting how much I sweat in stationary air.

I also dropped by Eyestone's office, and I didn't make the cut. Bad timing on this injury, I think I could have had a great race last weekend.

45 minutes on the elliptical tonight. I got there a little late, so didn't get as much time as I wanted. Kept the HR around 140-145 the first half, then up around 160-165 the last 20 minutes. I jogged about 100 meters, and things are feeling much better, but it's not quite there. My knee isn't lifting and my foot kind of drags on the ground.

Got to the weight room bright and early this morning for an hour on the elliptical. They wouldn't let me in until I shaved (what do they expect, who shaves that early, anyway?) and I feel extremely resentful for it. Mostly because my only option of shaving without missing the workout was to use their butter knife razors and watered down shaving cream. It felt like taking a potato peeler to my skin. Anyway, HR stayed at about 135 the first 20 minutes, then 142-147 the last 40 minutes.

I'm itching to run again. Tonight I might try a short one. I can bend the knee more than 90 degrees now, but it is still stiff. Maybe a slow shuffle would be sustainable.

Got an hour in on the elliptical. HR 140-145. This has got to be the most boring form of exercise ever invented. It's driving me insane. I ran a few strides but decided not to risk making it worse. I'm still optimistic, maybe by the end of this week I'll be able to run again.

Ran a couple of miles today. The knee is stiff and hurts a little but seems to be working okay. I only ran 2 miles to see if it would hurt it, help it, or if the knee would care at all. It's Saturday that I'm typing this, and the knee doesn't seem to have cared. I'll try a few more miles tonight.

I should be supplementing this with the elliptical work, but 1) I'm not sure if the elliptical is helping or hindering the knee recovery, and 2) I hate the elliptical. I've taken a couple days off and the knee seemed to do much better. I'm afraid that if I keep forcing myself out of bed at 6 am that I will quit everything altogether. Since walking on got shot down, I think I'm going to turn my attention to the marathon.

4 miles! Woohoo! My knee actually felt better today after yesterday's run, so I pushed the run to 4 miles. Not pain-free miles, but it wasn't bad. I probably won't go past this until I've made better progress, but this is starting to look better.

I'm a little surprised at how bad this injury turned out to be. I thought I'd only miss a couple days. This has been much worse than I'd hoped, but at least it's getting better. With any luck, I won't have to sue that gas station after all ;)

Ran 3 easy miles today. My knee has stopped hurting when I walk, but there was still considerable pain when I ran. I think I can try to do a few miles a day and see how it goes. I stopped doing the elliptical because the sleep deprivation was getting to me. And I hate gyms. Especially the BYU gym.... my high school had a nicer one.

Anyway, it was great to get a few miles in. 6:50 average pace - I was so just excited to be running. I felt heavy and slow, but my legs and breathing didn't feel too bad.

My calf has been bugging me a bit, so I took it easy yesterday and today.

Today my running came from a rugby match. I got recruited a couple months ago to referee - it's a cool game! Anyway, I worked both BYU games today, combined total of 120 minutes. Sort of. He said the bone is bruised, but that running is okay as long as the pain doesn't get worse. He also told me to quit icing it and just use heat and anti-inflammatories. Other bloggies have said the same thing, but icing for pain is just so darn instinctive!

8 miles, although it didn't feel great. I'm sore all over, which doesn't make a lot of sense. I don't think I'm sick. So I took this run pretty easy, maybe 7:30-8:00 pace. I got passed for the first time in my life on a training run, too, and even though I know it's not a big deal, it bothered me. It still bothers me. People should know better.

The knee I fell on back in January is giving me some problems. Nothing serious, but the level of irritation is up. Not sure why, but I don't like it.

10 miles. This was my favorite run of the year... I got a break from the wind today and got to run through the rare Eastern Washington rainstorm. It was dark and dreary and wonderful. Ran through the orchards and desert and loved every minute. The smell of wet sagebrush is the one thing I love about my hometown. Dry, dusty smelling sagebrush is no good, it was to be wet.

I drove out to another of my old runs. It follows a four-mile road through the middle of farmland to the base of a hill called Jump Off Joe. No word if Joe survived, but it's quite a climb from bottom to top. We used to do this once a year in high school - the road from the base to the top is about 1.5 miles long and climbs several hundred feet. One of these days I'll measure it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the run, and the climb confirmed to me that it is as bad as I remember. 11:57 was my time, 10:10 back down, so maybe it's a touch longer than 1.5 miles. I don't know. But fun day.

Started out through the orchards again and tried to hit a canal road, but I couldn't find it and ended up running through the middle of a wheat field. It was actually more enjoyable than you might think; there's something about sort of barren wasteland that I like.

I got a call last night from my brother in Springville. One of his neighbors has been putting on a race for the last few years, and my brother and his wife were helping out this week, so they invited me out to run it.

I was impressed with how well the thing was put on. The story behind it is that one of the race organizers' kids was killed in a car accident a few years ago, and they organized a scholarship fund in her memory. They use the race as a fundraiser - the website is here.

Anyway, the race starts in a little park just outside of Hobble Creek Canyon, and as luck would have it, there was a stiff breeze blowing out of the canyon at the start of the race. Spencer Gardner showed up, and as the race got under way, I tucked in next to him. I remembered his name from some of the state meet results, and he was wearing some BYU gear, so I figured I might have a chance against him if he wasn't in top shape but that he'd blow me away otherwise. Well, I don't think he was in top shape, but he still blew me away.

The first mile was with the wind at our backs, and Spencer took it out hard. The wind was just hard enough that the air seemed dead still around us. I stuck right on his shoulder, trying to test if the pace was his honest 5k pace, or if he might break later in the race. I thought if I could make it to two miles with him I might have a shot. One 90 degree turn to the left about a half-mile in, and the cross-wind was still favorable. I tried to make small talk with Spencer, but got a cold shoulder. A couple other high school kids hung with us through a half mile but dropped off and left us alone after that.

The first mile finished at the top of a lenghty uphill, and he threw in a surge or two as we approached it, and I stayed glued to his shoulder. I knew the pace was too fast for me, but hoped that he would crack first. He didn't. We climbed the hill, maybe 200-300m long, and passed the mile. My watch said 4:54. Probably a bit short, I would have expected something closer to 5:00. He surged again at the top of the hill, and again I stayed stuck to his shoulder. Just after the mile, the course turned left again, this time straight into the wind. I started grunting a little, hoping that he'd think I was done and ease up a bit, but no luck. I tucked right behind him, but he made a terrible wind block, and pretty soon my grunting was just out of sheer pain. We were getting close to halfway, but I couldn't keep the pace and the deadly gap began to form. I tried to close it, but my legs were getting heavy and I couldn't respond. By mile 2 he had 10-15 seconds on me. The watch read 10:29... mile 2 was probably a bit long, but I think the overall distance was close to correct.

By this point, the course had looped back to the first hill, and the wind wasn't bad going down. A right turn at 2.5 put the wind square in my face again, and I cursed it all the way to the finish. The watch read 15:52 at mile 3, and I covered the last bit in 24 seconds for 16:16 final time. I believe Spencer finished 19 seconds up.

I hate getting beat. Hate it, hate it, hate it. Especially when a guy gives me a cold shoulder. The audacity!

But overall I'm satisfied with the run. Obviously the course was a little short; 24 seconds for .1 miles is not quite right. I'm guessing 10-15 seconds overall, which puts me about where I expected given conditions, fast start, etc.

I stuck around for the kids' races after, which were honestly the best part. They had races for ages 2 and up... quite entertaining. Especially for you bloggers with kids, I highly recommend this run next year.

As a post script, gmap-pedometer.com measured the course as about .03 miles long. By its measurements, the 1-mile mark was exactly right, 1-2 was long, 2-3 was right, and 3-finish was short.

PM - Added 4 super-easy miles.

I guess I should be careful what I post... I really don't mean to bad-mouth the guy. To be fair, I was making small-talk with the purpose of slowing him down off the early pace, so him shutting me down seems reasonable. He was polite and courteous after the race, so no complaints there. Still. It got under my skin.

Sue - sorry to hear about your injury problems. Hope they heal soon! If you know Scott and Kirsten, you probably know my brother Randy as well?

I'm having alarm issues and slept through it for the second day in a row. This time I woke up at 7:30 and had missed the run at Sasha's.

Went out a little later for a tempo run. My aerobic base isn't really there yet, so I figured I'd go at 5:30 pace until it was harder than tempos should be. I'd hoped for 5 miles, but decided to cut it off at 4. Mile splits as follows:

5:32

5:32 (11:04)

5:34 (16:38)

5:28 (22:06)

Cooled down for a bit on the trail, then added 8x100m strides, first two in 16.5, next five bouncing between 14 and 15, and final in about 13.6.

Went out for an easy run this evening. About halfway through my Achilles suddenly started shooting me with sharp pains. It lasted for more than a quarter, so I stopped and tried to stretch, but that made it worse. Not wanting to hurt it further, I stopped to walk, but walking was worse. Tried walking backwards, sideways, tumbling... nothing worked. Finally I tried a quick shuffle, discovered it was painless, and within a quarter mile I was back up to 7:20 pace with no pain. Weird. It's not giving any pain now, so I'll throw some heat on it tonight and see what happens tomorrow.

Still, I want it feeling better than it does now before I put any serious stress on it. If I feel adventurous I might try a mile or two tonight, but the best things will probably be to let it rest.

I showed up to the cross country practice this morning in hopes that I might be able to run a little. I started doing some leg extensions and it seems to be helping. We only did a few miles, and the knee hurt a little but was bearable. If I can get it to keep improving while I put in a few miles a day, that would be ideal. We'll see. It doesn't feel fantastic right now.

Easy 5. The knee seems to be feeling better, so I went a little further on it. It was fine for 3 miles on asphalt, then the 2 on grass were somewhat painful.

Most of the kids have gone to a running camp in Montana, so I've been running with the few that stayed behind. One is a freshman who looks like he's got some talent. A 56 quarter in 8th grade, and he has an easy, natural stride. With some mileage under his belt, he'll be pretty good. He just looks like he's made to run.

I've actually had knee pain from running on grass before. Never on asphalt.

From Tyler on Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 20:06:57 from 96.25.37.83

Yeah it's bizarre. It's like the extra height of the grass is just enough to put make it hurt.

AM - 4 easy miles

PM - Took a couple of the guys on a 4 mile tempo. We were told to go out hard enough that we could come back at a faster pace, without killing ourselves. First two miles were 11:48. We stopped for about 4-5 minutes, then came back in 11:01. I was shocked at the 11:01 as I was sure we weren't running a second faster than 6:00 pace. I was running with a 17:00 5k guy, and he was struggling about 3 minutes into the return trip. I can't figure it out... I'm 99% positive that we were running 6:00  pace or slower, but my watch was running each time I glanced at it and it's never given incorrect times before. I'm left scratching my head as I don't think I'm suddenly magically in the kind of shape that 5:30 pace feels that easy.

In any case, the knee felt okay. Not great, but okay.

AM - Easy 3 this morning. The knee felt fine till I got on some grass. And then it was fine after I was off the grass. I figure I'll try 45 miles this week and see how it goes. I made an appointment for physical therapy, so hopefully I can get it behind me. The leg extensions I'm doing are making my legs uneven... my right hamstring is especially feeling it (the left knee hurts)... so I guess it's important to strenghten other things as well.

On another note, the dynamic of this high school team is interesting. This is the first time they've had so much talent (2 sub-9:20 guys, a 9:30 guy, and 3 others between 9:45 and 10:00, plus 2 or 3 others who have sub-9:40 talent, barring injury). But they've gotten in the habit of running hard every single day. Example: The 17:00 5k guy I paced last night ran this morning's 3 miles at 6:30 pace. That's his standard training pace. The top guys rarely run slower than 6:30 pace, more often hanging around 6:15. They were only running 30-35 mpw this spring but want to work up to 60-70 mpw this summer, and it seems to me that they run the risk of hurting themselves out at higher volumes. I'm not sure how to get them to slow down, but I think this team has some serious potential if they don't kill themselves first.

PM - Coach had the boys doing a flag drill tonight, so I joined them for a few. I ran barefoot through the grass, more than anything to test my knee had sprint pace, and it seemed to hold up fine.

AM - Went to therapy yesterday and was told I have bursitis above my knee cap and maybe a little tendinitis. Had ultrasound and shock therapy done and was told to keep doing the leg extensions for strenghthening. And lots of icing. I'll probably do some cross training next week, but I want to give it a few days to see if it will get better without cutting out running.

Anyway, an easy 5 this morning.

PM - Added 42 minutes of biking. Heartrate at the turnaround was 132.

So I took most of last week off, then saw the physical therapist on Monday. It was a different guy this time, and he seemed to have the magic touch. We spent the entire hour working on loosening up my hamstring and quads... and I ran that night without a problem. So moral of the story: Spend a little more time on my stretches. I'm loving it.

Also, it's clear to me that training at even the 4500 feet of Provo is significantly different than here. The relative ease or difficulty of different paces has obviously shifted from what it was at altitude.

6.000.000.002.008.00

We ran a time trial on the opening XC course for this year. This is my first cross race since 2004, and the difference between road or track racing surprised me. In high school I used to lump racing of any kind into all the same category, but cross is completely different. Imagine that.

The course record is 10:01, set by a kid who went on to run 9:10 for 3200m that spring. The 2nd fastest time was 10:36, run by another kid who ran a 4:14 1600m later that spring. So the course is fairly slow, running through deep grass, sand, uneven ground, sharp turns, and a couple of hills.

We got out fairly fast, a pack of 5 or 6. I had hoped to do my job of pushing them, but they got out fast enough that I found myself in 3rd or 4th through the first quarter, 73 seconds. I continued to sit there, letting them push the pace through about 3/4 mile, passing 1/2 in 2:28. Approaching the mile, guys started falling off one by one till just me and Anthony were left. Anthony is only a sophomore, and he's going to be an incredible runner. I mean, he has super-star potential, it just remains to be seen just how much talent he has. He ran a 4:23, 9:31 1600m/3200m double as a freshman. Yeah.

Anyway, I sat behind him, trying to pull up even with him, but he worked hard to keep me just a step or two behind. We went through the mile in 4:58, then slowed in the 3rd half, running through the majority of sand and sharp turns here. 1.5 was reached in 7:45 and I was still a step behind. At this point, I made a move to pull even, but he moved at just the same time and I remained 2 steps behind.

Shortly after, I pulled even and continued to push the pace, but he matched me stride for stride. He cut me off around a corner, and I fell behind 2 steps again. Excellent move on his part, and I never regained the ground. We dashed up the final hill, and the steep downhill slingshot us into the final stretch. I came down the hill with awesome momentum, almost pulled even, but he began to kick hard. I maintained my momentum and sprinted but could not gain ground, and remained 2 steps behind through the finish. 10:09 to 10:10.

The next 5 were not far behind. This team is going to be really good this season, things are coming together well. Anthony is the strong #1 now, but there are 3 others who can push him, and the top 5 scorers should be a fairly tight pack.

I was happy with my run, considering my current mileage, but was surprised to be beat by Anthony. It's good to train with these guys, they're good enough to push me to some faster times.

Coach wanted this one run at a slower pace to get more of the guys bunched up together later in the race. He wanted 10:30 for two miles and then whatever we had for the last 800m. We had 6 guys within 30 seconds of each other, and 5:15 pace isn't all that slow a pace for this course.

We stayed bunched through about 1.75 and then the others started to lose touch with the top 2 guys and me. We went through 2 in 10:42, a little off pace, and finished with a 2:24 final half.

The national high school rankings came out this week, and it's pretty exciting stuff for our team. All summer we've had our sights set on going after Ferris HS from Spokane and Jackson HS from the west side of the state. On paper we should be about even with these teams. Ferris is currently ranked #1 in the country and Jackson #13. The defending national champions, North Central, also from Spokane, are at #14. Of course, preseason rankings are spotty at best, but this team is good enough to run with those top two teams. The head coach said he got an information request form from the guys who do the rankings, but decided he didn't want his guys focused on rankings and didn't fill it out. Ferris and North Central are our second race of the season, and the guys are totally stoked for it.

Anyway, 12 miles on my own today. Had a golf thingy with work so I missed the morning practice. Realized about halfway through that I had not been drinking nearly enough and finished severely dehydrated. The last 4 miles or so were not fun. Hill workout tonight with the team. Close to 100 degrees today so we waited till evening. 10x90 second hill repeats, about 2:1 rest ratio, which was okay with me because I was not on my game tonight; a little dehydrated, I think. But the team ran great... they race the #1 and #14 ranked teams in the nation next week and are hungry to pick someone off.

Opening race for our boys team. They ran very, very well, sweeping the top-4 spots against respectable opponents, #5 barely getting nipped at the line for 6th place. 25 second spread over a difficult 2-mile course for the top 5, not bad. They race the #5 and #17 nationally ranked teams next week. We expect to win.

I ran the anchor leg of a local triathlon today... kind of a weird, but very fun experience. It's been a long, long time since I ran a 10k, so I was hoping to get a good gauge of where I'm at fitness-wise, since most of my recent workouts have been odd-ball high school XC type workouts.

My teammates told me I'd get the hand-off about 4 minutes down on the top team, and their guy is a 38-ish 10k runner. Piece of cake, I thought, figuring I should be able to run 33:00. But when our biker was nowhere in sight 3:30 down, then 4:00, then 4:30, I started to think a win was out of the question. He finally came into view at 5:00 and I had the timing chip by 5:30 behind the lead guy, running in 3rd place by this point. The weather was perfect, the course was flat with generally gentle turns, and I was initially shooting for a 5:20 pace average, although now thinking that 5:15 might be needed to win.

I had borrowed a Garmin and was banking on being able to pace off of it but should have known the instantaneous pace would be inaccurate. It was bouncing between 5:10 and 5:25 for the first mile, jumping to 6:00 every time I went under a tree (is that normal?), so I really had no clue what I was running. The first mile cone came through in 5:41 and was obviously off... the watch told me I'd done 1.10 miles at that point.

So I tried to guess where 5:20 pace was and glanced at the watch every time I was out from under the trees. The 2-mile cone went by in 11:04 and I didn't catch the Garmin measurement. 3-mile cone came and went in 16:31 and I reached the turnaround in 17:08. It was an out-and-back course so I was able to measure 2:20 between me and 1st place, and the excitement of closing so much distance in the first half helped shake off some of the fatigue that was creeping in.

I passed 2nd place around mile 4 (22:04, I think?), realized I had a lot left in the tank and started to push it. I peeked at the Garmin every time I was in the clear and watched it drop from 5:20 to 4:58. I was getting nervous as I neared mile 5, straining to see ahead to my target... and he finally came into view around the mile mark (27:12).

He was 30 seconds up and I knew he was toast. I dug down a little more, not wanting to make it too close, Garmin pace creeped down to 4:53 (probably just under 5:00 in reality), and he was coming back to me very quickly. I caught him at 5.4 and had a straight shot to the finish. I held my pace to 6 miles, and the final bit was a moderate uphill to the finish. My watch stopped at 33:30 for 6.30, about 45 seconds up on 2nd place. I believe that makes 32:58 for a straight conversion to 6.2, which is okay. That's about where I expected to be.

I was not happy with the mile measurements... In retrospect I had no clue what pace I was running. I believed my Garmin when I was in the open during the race, but in reality it was reading 5 seconds fast or so. It's really not hard to certify a course, so why is it so hard to find one around here?

The good news is I had lots left at the end. I believe my last 2.3 miles was run in 5:00-5:05 pace, so I should be running my 10k considerable quicker. I'll have to find a certified course for the next one of these I do.

Probably the 10 K was accurate and the Garmin was not. Nevertheless, good negative split and good pace. And, when a 33:00 10 K runners sees a 38:00 with a mile to go, the 38:00 guy is toast. It is another example of ram stuck in the thicket sacrifice.

From Tyler on Sat, Sep 12, 2009 at 22:03:17 from 96.25.37.83

I suppose the Garmin could have been accurate. But the first mile started with a long downhill, and my watch read 5:41 at the marker, which would have been my slowest mile of the race. Going by feel, I expected 5:20-5:25... but who knows. Either way, it was fun :)

Woke up this morning, felt out my foot, and decided I was go for the community race this morning before the high school meet. This is a very cool course, run at the middle school next to Richland High. The middle school sits on top of a long, very steep hill before leveling off to the pancake-flat athletic fields. They run 3 laps, the first is a 1/2 mile loop around the inside of the athletic fields, then laps 2 and 3 take a long, diagonal shot at the hill and circle the school up top before dropping down a long, gradual downhill that levels off just before you hit the street. This is where we do our 3/4 mile hill workouts, and I absolutely love the course.

It was about 30 degrees at the start and I was foolish enough to think I'd be fine in a singlet. I wanted to run sub-15, figured anything under 15:30 would be good considering the recent lapse in training. I got out fast, 72 for the first quarter, felt good, then 2:32 for 1/2 mile, the cold really settling into my chest and legs. I pushed the hill hard but couldn't accelerate at the top of the hill and came through the mile in 5:15. At first I thought my lack of zip was due to a lapse in fitness, but I managed to maintain that pace for the rest of the race. I was alone after 1/4 mile, so it was more of a time trial than anything.

Hit 2 miles at the top of the second hill in 10:35 (5:20), then ran the final downhill mile in 5:12 for a 15:47 final time. A little disappointed with the time, but it's considerably faster than I ran it in high school (16:49 when it was a 5k as a senior). My legs and arms were frozen, and I blame the slower pace on that -- I really felt good otherwise.

In the team race we got thrashed by North Central (US #18 at the time, moved up to #8 afterwards). The score was something like 68-131. Our sophomore ran 15:16, our #2 hit 15:27 (just got done taking the SATs and had the flu last week), #3 15:59 (huge improvement for out other sophomore), the others struggled a bit. Our usual #3 ran terrible for him -- he also took the SAT today and just seemed to be fried. He ran fine later the next week, but on this day, he looked bad. Good things still happening... we have yet to run as we are capable.

Top 2 runners are sick. Again. Fevers and hacking coughs... what does that sound like? Coach is more depressed than I've ever seen him...

5x2:00 fartleks for the healthy ones, beginning at 5:30 pace and dropping to sub-5. I needed more so I hit the track for a 3200m tempo, figuring 5:15 pace would be a good goal. The wind was moderate today, so I just tried to relax and breathe easy. I reached 1600m in 5:13 and it felt great. I felt quick and relaxed, although my legs were tight. It was cold today, and I couldn't stay warm enough. Very tight in the legs and chest, but aerobically it felt great. I stayed on the same pace till a lap to go, then opened up for the last quarter in 69. 5:04 final 1600 for 10:17 total time. The 69 was close to all-out, my legs and chest just felt too tight to go faster. I'm very happy to hit the goal pace, though.

Easy 12 from Leslie Groves Park. I set out with a 1:30 run in mind, heading upstream along the river trail to see how far it goes. I got to one of the incomplete nuclear reactors on the Hanford site in 25 min, and continued around the enclosure till I reached 30. Very flat terrain, I think this could make a great standard tempo course. I'll have to measure out miles sometime. Reached my car in 1:03 and added 20 downstream before calling it a day. Figure the average pace was under 7:00, so I'll just round it to 12. Calves are sore, ran forefoot the whole way. Longest run I've done on the balls of my feet, I think my calves are taking it better. I like how it feels, though... we'll see if it causes other problems down the road, but I may run like this forever if it doesn't.

So a quick update so I don't completely forget my training the last few weeks. I hurt something in my foot, not totally sure what, that made me think I was done for awhile. But I've been able to run on it if I forefoot strike, so I'm just trying to finish out the high school season so I can pace our guys in their workouts. Which would be great, except the flu has been wreaking havoc on our guys. Our top 4 runners are all out right now with various forms of flu, bacterial infections... whatever you can think of.

As for myself, I've managed to stay healthy so far, aside from my foot, and I'm managing to stay in decent shape. Today we went up to our old friend, Jump Off Joe, and do a steady 3.8 mile run to the base of the hill, then tempo 3 miles on the way back. I was pacing for our #5 and #6, and #5 was feeling good and jumped out to a good pace early. I hung back with #6 and tried to help him out, but he told me at 1.5m to just catch up to the other, his hamstring was hurting too much to hold the pace. It'd been a nagging injury for him this season. I caught #5 and we finished the last mile together, rounding out a mildly downhill 3 miles in 16:15. This is huge improvement for him, as our very talented #3 ran 16:12 for the same run 2 weeks ago. If we can get the other 4 healthy, I think we still have a chance at a top-3 finish at state. The run felt easy to me, I've increased the amount of tempo work in the last couple weeks and feel like it's really paying off. Foot was okay - no pain during the run, a moderate amount after. Still can't tell whether it's tendon or bone.

Districts today in Wenatchee. Awesome town to run in, the Columbia river runs right through the middle, long sloping hills on either side. The race was in a park next to the river with a nice river trail that I got some extra time for myself on.

Looks like we could only get away with laying down sick for so long. We ran all of our top 7 and barely squeaked through to regionals next week. By about 25 points. It'll be interesting to see if we can pull together to grab one of the state berths next week. I think if we can buy ourselves that extra week, we'll be able to place top 4 at state.

We found out our #5 is anemic (ferritin count was 20), which explains his excessive fatigue lately. That rounds out our entire scoring team as being down and out the last week... I hoped they'd do better today, but we looked awful.

Final workout before the state meet. I took Saturday through Tuesday off to rest my foot, and it seems to be getting much better. Maybe I'll have to look into some physical therapy, but I'm going to resume training as usual.

8x300m intervals in the grass at the XC course in 47.5ish with 1:15 rest (enough to jog to start). Felt like a very good sharpening workout and the guys looked good.

State meet today. Boys placed 8th with 188 points. Third place came in at 150 points... a lot of mixed feelings about the result. After looking at results around the state, I fully expected the boys to finish 3rd, but it was clear it would be very tight from about 3rd to 6th in the team scoring. Our top 3 guys did not run as well as I thought they could, even given their sickness issues. They just lost more fitness than I had expected. #2 and 3 ran better than last week but I thought they'd make up even more ground. Ah well. From barely making it out of districts to 8th at state... it really could have been worse.

The good news for me is my ankle really seems to be doing better. The scraping has been doing the trick. So next week I'll up the intensity a bit and see if I can't get my miles up.

I showed up to practice tonight expecting to pace our freshman to a 4:45 1600m, but they didn't show. So the rest of us debated on what our workout should be. It evolved from 1600m + 4x400m to 2x1600m in 4:45 to "let's see what we can do for 3200m." I really did not want to stress my ankle beyond the 4:45 but somehow forgot about it as we got ready to run.

The plan was for me to pace the group at 71s for as long as possible, which I thought was a joke given my recent training and tried to tell the guys I was fat and out of shape. But they didn't listen. So two 71s into the TT and I knew I was in trouble; we slowed to 4:51 through 4 laps and they continued to follow. Breathing wasn't too bad but it was the legs that got heavy really fast. I plodded along, there must have been a 75 in there once or twice, I'll figure it out in a sec, and finally with 2 laps to go Anthony (our stud sophomore) goes by. One of our seniors also goes by and on the backstretch I decided to "push" the last two. Meaning I stopped slowing down. I caught the senior again but was too tired to encourage him to follow and he fell back a bit. I was shocked to see the clock at 8:35 with a lap to go, I figured my death was much worse than that, and managed to close to cross in 9:45. Anthony blitzed a 64 final lap to finish in 9:37. It seemed like a medium effort for him, too, while I was in agony.

The ankle felt fine and I'm honestly ecstatic to have run 9:45 in my current state of fatness. A day later and my legs are angry with me, but it has me excited for getting in good shape this winter.

I need to add some more tonight, but I was short on time. Paced one of our freshman to a 4:55 1600m. Apparently he did not understand he was supposed to follow me and led the first 200m in 33ish seconds. The kid is very good, although he's currently set on soccer instead of track. We'll have to work on that.

7.500.000.004.0011.50

Rolled out of bed this morning to freezing cold temperatures to go run the 4-miler in Orem. I'm not in nearly the shape I'd like to be and was shooting for sub-21 but expecting something closer to 21:30. Typically I don't like to race until I'm in better shape, and the soreness in my legs as I'm writing this reminds me why. But I'm trying to kick the habit and get into more races. I was ecstatic with the result today.

I showed up at 6:30 shivering my you-know-what off and sat in my car listening to music. Guess I got there a bit early. I wandered around a bit but didn't see anyone I knew so I just tried to keep warm. 25 degrees according to the high school reader-board.

Warmed up 15 minutes, did some strides, wandered over the start line. I ran into Danny Moody during the warm-up and talked with him. I was surprised to hear him talk about trying to run sub-20 since I've beat him pretty good in the past. He's done something right in the last year, though; 19:39 is pretty solid. Sasha and Ted were there at the start so we caught up a bit and waited for the eternity it took them to start the race. The starter said there would be a whistle then a gun, which is simply brilliant since everyone took off at the whistle.

I got out quick to keep from getting squished against a car and settled in to what I thought was 5:20 pace. I planned to pick it up later if I felt alright. Guys that took off too fast came back much faster than they should have and I settled in behind one that was close to my pace. Half a mile in some guy passed us going pretty quick and I tucked in behind him. After about 30 seconds the pace felt too hot so I let him go. Mile 1 came and went in 5:13 and I felt better than expected.

Second mile was all alone and I thought I might've slowed a bit. But I reached the marker in 5:16 and was still feeling okay. My legs were starting to hurt, but it was my breathing that felt so good. The guy who passed me earlier had caught up to one of the SUU guys and they both had 20 seconds or so on me. I threw in a surge at halfway and the 2 of them started coming back so I kept it up.

My breathing felt so good over the 3rd mile that I started to think I could make my legs do whatever I wanted. I've never felt such a difference between the two. Legs hurt, breathing's great. What does that mean? 3rd mile was another 5:16 and the two guys only had about 5 seconds on me.

I picked up the pace again but the other two also picked it up. So I pushed it a little harder until they were creeping back to me again. They had separated a little and I caught the SUU guy first. He glanced over at me and I surged a little to keep him from hanging on until he was broken. With a half to go I caught the other one and did the same. It felt so good to break them, and I continued to increase the tempo to gain as much separation as I could. I didn't want to have one of them decide he could outsprint me in the end. I hate that.

Turning onto the final stretch I picked it up, then again as the finish line came into view. SUU dude was closing on me but I managed to hold it to the line. 5:01 final mile.

Official placing was 3rd, but there were 2 or 3 phantom BYU guys ahead of me. Either way, I'm very happy with the result and looking forward to getting into better shape.

What's your next race? Any marathons in the near future? I'm semi-considering running Spokane in May...

From Tyler on Wed, Dec 09, 2009 at 20:24:21 from 66.96.68.176

They have a local 10k next week that can be competitive depending on what college guys show up. Should be good. No marathons on the schedule yet... I'm looking at building that aerobic base over the next year, try for some good 10k and half-marathon times through the summer and on into next fall.

I've never looked at the Spokane marathon. Should be fairly competitive though, right? Good running traditions in Spokane.

Something is changing in my body. I've never felt this good so early in my training, and it almost feels like cheating. After one of our high school runners found out he was anemic, I started taking iron pills just on principle. I don't think I've ever tested low for iron. Anyway, I was surprised at the Orem Thanksgiving run with how good I felt and today was the same way. I can't know for sure if I can give the iron credit, but I have no other explanation for the way I feel. This race felt like a tempo run.

The other thing I learned is that nobody in the Tri-cities can put on a good race. The course was sparsely marked and it was a miracle I made all the right turns. Santa started the race without any warning whatsoever. And the timing was all wrong. Apparently the men's 5k was won in <12:20 and the women's 10k in 29:30. Hahahahaha, hohohohohoho. I had all kinds of people coming up to me afterwards saying, "Did she really beat you by that much?"

I warmed up with sophomore-Austin and hunted around for an open bathroom, an adventure in itself. There are never enough Port-o-Potties at these things so I ran across the street to a gas station and was delighted to find the bathroom open. Until I walked inside. First thing I noticed was fecal mater covering the sink, like somebody climbed up and squatted over it and let loose. Let loose like I've never seen before. Which in itself deserves some kind of award for the sheer athleticism. Of course there was no toilet paper or paper towels... And I'll cut that story short there. It was better than waiting in the Port-o-Potty line, I promise.

The rain stopped by the start and temps were somewhere below 40 and higher than 32, because thankfully there was no ice on the course. We've had ice like you wouldn't believe all week long and it barely melted in time. So, normally they have a Santa in a crane with a shotgun who starts the race for us, which is as cool as it sounds, but this year they decided to start it with a cannon. Which also had coolness-potential. Santa was still in the crane, but he was supposed to signal with his arms when the cannon would go off. He gave a 1 minute warning. 20 seconds later the cannon went off. I'm ashamed to say that I elbowed a high schooler out of my way to keep from getting boxed. I'm ashamed to say it... but I'd do it again if I had to.

Normally the best competition at this thing is in the 10k, but most of the college guys who are home for the holidays ran the 5k. Bummer. I did get one who is supposedly pretty good, but he finished in 33:50 and was a non-factor up front. Race starts up this old cable bridge that spans the Columbia river. Long uphill followed by long downhill. The whole thing is well over 1/2 mile long. Just before the mile the 5k guys split off and I discovered myself leading the 10k, which is not how I pictured it. 5:08 mile. A high school kid was with me and seemed to be holding on okay. I remembered some of his races against our guys and hoped he could push me for awhile. I let him pull alongside me hoping to share the pace, but he tried to take the lead and started fading shortly after as we climbed an overpass. Oh well. No 2 mile marker available.

No 3 mile marker available. The level of discomfort I felt in the race leveled off about here and never got worse.

4 miles reached in 20:57. Cool, a little slower than I'd hoped, but I was alone and close to my time from the Orem race. Guessed on a few of the unmarked turns. Correctly, it turns out. Reached 5 miles in 26:15. Thought I had picked it up at mile 4, but this was one of my slower miles.

The 5 mile mark turns you down into the industrial district of Pasco. There was one cone marking the 10k course and then I was supposed to take a left to head to the warehouse where the race finished. There were 4 lefts to choose from. 2 of them looked viable and neither had any sign of being the right one. I took the last one and was correct. The race officials were halfway down the road walking away from the turn. I'm trying to hold back my comments, but I want it to be known I'm seething inside even as I write.

5k and 10k finishes converged into a long straightaway into the warehouse. A long, muddy straightaway. Chip timing had me at 32:28, I stopped my watch a little late at 32:33, so I'm rounding to 32:32 for my race report. I trust my watch, plus 32:32 just has a cool look to it. *Correction - Official results posted on the web have me at 32:32.

I felt awesome. I wish I'd had someone there at the end. In Orem I finished in 5:01 and I felt equally as good here, just with no one to catch. I think there are good things to come this year.

The hot Dr. Pepper they served afterwards may have been the best part. And I won a 2-person 1-night stay at the Red Lion Hotel which I plan to pawn off for as much Mt Dew as I can get.

Splits:

1 - 5:08

2 through 4 - 15:49 (20:57)

5 - 5:18 (26:15)

6.2 - 6:17

First word that comes to mind is...AWESOME! Great job despite such a chaotic morning and shoddy course markings. Way to push the pace while running solo--that's never a simple task.

Very entertaining report as well. I'm sure many of us can relate to the "seething inside even as (you) write." I know I can!

Congrats again. You're going to have a fantastic 2010.

I've read your race reports before, but I don't remember them being this entertaining. Must be the iron.

Yikes, what a mess at your race! Congratulations on rising above it all and running a fantastic race! Great race report.

Nice job Tyler. I can really see that high school kid trying to hang with you then dying as soon as he tried to take the lead. He didn't know who he was dealing with!

The markers on the 5K course were marked fairly well I thought, even though there were two 2 mile markers about a half mile apart.

It was a fun race! Maybe next year I'll actually race it.

By the way, where did you find the race results?

From Sasha Pachev on Mon, Dec 21, 2009 at 13:49:04 from 192.168.1.1

You might be on to something with that iron supplement. Your endurance in the past had serious issues. Granted your mileage has not been stellar, but those lapses cannot be explained just by the lack of mileage. This is starting to look more like a normal Tyler.

If iron is indeed the problem, you should see some serious improvements in endurance from diet clean-up.

From Tyler on Mon, Dec 21, 2009 at 17:38:27 from 96.25.37.83

Sasha, you mean diet clean up like pawning my hotel gift card for Diet Mt. Dew instead or regular? :)

Phil, yeah there was a cone I passed that said 2 miles, but my watch said 10:10 and I didn't believe it. And you'll definitely have to do it next year. I was hoping you would race this time, I think you'd have surprised yourself with a good time. I think all that work is going to pay off.

AM - Met with Phil and Austin for 6.5 at 7:00 on the nose around Thompson Hill. Legs are doing okay everywhere but the calves, which are in agony. Not as much agony as after Orem, but agony nevertheless. Kept going to 63:05 for 9 miles.

PM - Added 4 on the river trail in 29:15.

Oh yeah, I was going to tell you that we only did 8.5

I did the math wrong in my head at the school.

Yeah, I added 1.5 after I dropped you off. I understood what you meant :)

Another late night run. 12 miles in the Rancho Reata area, heading down to Gage and Keene. With about 3 miles to go a sharp pain started on the outside of my right calf... gave me a good scare. Stretched it a bit and slowed way down for the rest of the run. 42:30 out and 46:30 back for 1:29:00 total time. Scraped the heck out of it and iced it to death for good measure when I got back. We'll see how it does.

AM - 6.5 with Phil and Austin up in Rancho Reata because my alarm didn't go off and I didn't wake up in time to meet them at the school. Added 1.5 for an even 8. 55:18 total time.

The calf is definitely not 100%, time will tell if it gets better or worse. More scraping and icing when I got home. I've had a tough time keeping my calves loose and it's catching up with me.

PM - 4 mile easy run, no watch. Planned for 5 miles but felt pretty tired and decided not to push it and settle for the 69 mile week.

PM 1 - So it snowed about 1/2 inch last night which meant I got called into work early and messed up my morning run. But I got off early, so I guess it evens out.

I bought some slip-on ice spikes awhile back for my running shoes and tried them out today. I figured that since I took myself out for a month about a year ago on ice it might be a good idea to have some handy for really bad days. But I totally underestimated the weight of these things. They're just a little stretchy rubber sole that slips over your shoe with teflon studs in them, and they felt pretty light at the time of purchase, but to run in them is like tying bricks to my feet. Which I think would be about equally as effective for ice traction but would cost about $20 less. I could feel my knees and shin muscles straining under the stress of lifting my feet... it was horrible and I ditched them about 6:00 into my run.

The trail actually had decent traction and I managed 7:00 pace out for 5.3 and decided I was in the mood for something uptempo. I had 5:40 pace in mind but I was a little speed happy and went 5:35 which in the snow felt like 5:15-5:20. Tempo'd back to where I ditched my stupid ice spikes, about 4.1 ish. 22:47 total time. This is all guesswork, of course, I need to get out there and measure the course with a wheel, but I figure I'm within 10 seconds/mile, which is good enough for now.

Oh, and the pain in my calf is completely gone today. Another victory for Josse's scraping techniques.... best money I ever spent was having her work on me.

AM - 10 miles downstream on the river trail.

PM - Easy 4 in Rancho Reata.  Every so often I have a run that is just so simple, so perfect, so euphoric... it reminds me why I love to run in the first place. This was one of these. I got out at about 11:30, it had just snowed a couple inches, nobody was on the road. The moon was poking through the clouds and I had the roads to myself, the snow muffling all sound around me. It was brilliant.

Meant to do another run today, but I'm low on sleep and my body's tired so I chose sleep over the run. I work nights every other week and I just finished up my last shift this week, so the rest of the week will be smooth sailing.

Ran 4.7 with Austin from Kamiakin at 7:01 pace. Moving pretty good for the amount of snow on the ground. Added another 3.5.
