| 10 from the Donovan. Can't call this one easy as we ran the horsetrails around Padden and then cruised pretty fast on the way back. Not sure why we were pushing it, maybe showing off for the recruit we had with us. I don't know. But this finishes off a good week of training. My injury woes seem to be behind me for awhile, plus I got 3 good days of hills in. I just need to drop some of this winter weight and get some tempos under my belt and I should be good to go. |

| 12 easy just outside of Naches. A bunch of friends and I rented a cabin up here for the weekend, I ran a beautiful 90 minute run up the forest service road just outside. The road quickly turned to ice and snow. There was a 100+ head herd of elk feeding in the valley (being fed, apparently the DFW feeds the elk around here in the winter). They spooked when they saw me and stampeded alongside me, then across the road just in front of me. Very cool. They did the same thing when I came back, I came within 30 yards of them as they crossed the road. Big animals. |

| 4 mile tempo on the Urb. My pace was all over the place. I feel fat. I need to diet. Too much cookie dough and pop. My goal was to start out in 5:20-5:25 and ratchet the pace down to 5:15 for the last 2 miles. I started in 5:24 (good), but it felt hard the whole way. Then I slowed to 5:35 (bad), turned around, ran 5:42 (double bad), and closed in 5:26 (on the fence). 22:08 final time. Does that add up? Nope, I think there was an extra second devoted to slowing my larger-than-normal mass in order to pull a 180 change of directions. Avg pace 5:32. I supposed that's in line with my other tempos, though. I just really want to be in racing shape now! I'm weighing in at 152-154 these days, which is waaaayyy over my old racing weight of 140. The last two cross seasons I've been at 144. I've got a tub of Tollhouse waiting for me in the freezer..... I know I don't have the self-control to leave it untouched, but I couldn't bear throwing it in the trash. This is a dilemma. |

| This was far from the rust-buster race I was hoping for. I doubted my fitness and raced timidly for 5 laps in 2nd place off the leader. The pace was nothing special, we came through 1600m in 4:46, and slowed to 6:00 through 2k, and then the pace picked up and I caved rather than try to test myself and go with it. The winner ran 8:50, I slowed to 76s over the last 1k. |

| Longer run up in the Chuckanuts out to Lost Lake. I got some very bad news today. Due to my health history with Crohn's disease, I petitioned the NCAA for a 6th year of eligibility, and today I finally received word that I was being denied. The logic of their explanation seems erroneous to me, and I plan to fight it if I can. By their ruling, they have effectively shortened the length of my eligibility from 5 years to 4. How do you fight the NCAA's own committee? They're supposed to be the experts in this. I started college in '04 and tried out for XC but was cut. Then I went on an LDS mission, developed Crohn's disease in the field, and had to return home in February or '06. I tried to train when I got back, but it was hopeless. I was sick from the time I got home to Sept '07 when I had a section of my intestines surgically removed, wiping out 2 XC seasons. I tried to compete again in '08, and then left BYU in '09. Then I came to WWU where I've competed 2 seasons. The NCAA committee is counting the seasons of '04, '08 and the 2 here at WWU as 4 seasons during which I was healthy and either could have or did compete. And so they won't grant me another, even though they acknowledge my disease was "incapacitating," in their words. The problem with this is that they shouldn't count my '04 season against me, because I was never on the BYU team. By NCAA rules, I had 4 full seasons of competition remaining in XC when I returned from my mission. They're saying I only had 3. By NCAA rules, you have 5 years to complete 4 seasons of competition. The committee is only giving me 4 years. But will they listen? |

| 3x3200m on the track. I was hoping to start at about 10:15 and cut down to 10:00, but I bled a little time on each one and ended up with 10:14, 10:17, 10:21. Still, I'm fairly pleased with the workout since I did it alone, and it's the first serious workout I've completed so far. I registered for Bloomsday yesterday and got entered into the elite field, which should be a lot of fun. My training will focus on being ready for that race, and maybe I'll look for a good quality 10k in late May or early June. It would be nice to try to crack 31 this year. |

I wasn't straining at all, but it was a tough workout. I would have liked it to be a few seconds faster per rep, but my fitness is coming along. w/ 2min rests: 3:04.5 3:03.0 3:02.5 3:01.5 (had to take a pit stop but managed to keep the rest to the targeted 2:00) 3:02.5 (not taking an active recovery made me feel sluggish at the start) 3:00.2 Average - 3:02.4 PM - 5 miles easy. Core and lots of icing. My right arch is a bit tender. Brooks discontinued my favorite shoes, so I'm trying out some different shoes and I'm having some aches and pains popping up. |

I raced tonight in our home meet. I was trying to get out in 15:00 pace and see how long I could hold it. My 1k splits were as follows, as best I can remember: 3:01, 3:02 (6:03), 3:06 (9:09), 3:08 (12:17), 3:08 (15:25). Looks like I need a bit more work, but I'm not displeased with this result. I was gunning for something closer to 15:15, but I'll take it for now. It's amazing to me how long it takes me to get in shape after injury. Maybe I should work more on my diet. I'm concerned with how I ran in the last 1k. I was mentally weak in my finish. Also, interesting to note is that my breathing felt a lot better than my legs. This is a common theme in my training and I'm not sure what it means or how to change my training to capitalize on it. And by this I mean that my breathing was far less labored than my legs were telling me I should be. I never felt like I entered serious oxygen debt. But my legs were uncomfortable with the pace after 2k and it took a lot of effort not to slow more than I did. Something I'll have to think about. Oh and I realized that I technically ran a PR. 15:25.48 over my previous 15:25.60. The old one was set at altitude, so I still consider it the better mark.

| Run 1 - Tuesday workout, 4x1k cutdowns with 2:00 rests + 5x200m with full recovery. The first 1k felt a little awkward, but I warmed into it and ended up really pleased with them. The 200s, however, felt awful. I haven't done 200m repeats in awhile, so this was a shock to the system. Another 1k in 2:55 would have felt much less painful. 1ks - 3:06, 3:02, 2:59, 2:54 200s - 31, 30, 29.5, 29.5, 29.5 I'm pleased with how I felt. The longer repeats felt nice and controlled, and it felt good to open it up a little bit on the last one. |

| I drove up last night for the Bloomsday race in Spokane. I did this a few years ago and loved the experience and thought I could improve on the previous result. My girlfriend and I met up with some friends at Hu Hot (one of my all-time favorite restaurants) and then headed up into the woods to camp. We had just gotten camp set up when a pack of wolves began howling some distance away. Spooky. And they were definitely wolves, I've grown up around coyotes all my life -- these howls were too low-pitched and drawn out for coyotes. No yipping. I knew there were packs moving into Washington, but I had no idea they had moved in so close to Spokane. Anyway, the race went very badly. I made a huge mistake in my training, and because of poor planning and a rushed schedule I didn't get a run in on Friday or Saturday. I wasn't planning to peak for this race, so my workload was significant between the Tuesday and Thursday workouts. I think I really needed some easy runs those two days to get some blood through the legs and help them recover, because they felt awful on the course today. I got out fine in 5:08, but I was straining right from the gun. The 2nd mile has a long downhill and finishes on a shorter uphill, and I only managed 5:17, then 5:22 for an uphill mile 3. 16:00 at 3. After that I was toast. I ran mile 4 in 5:40, almost 6:00 on mile 5 up the Doomsday hill, and then I didn't pay attention to splits and just focused on finishing. Once again, my breathing felt totally fine, but my legs were just dead, and the hills took whatever else I had left in them. I'm fairly certain that was due to not running the last 2 days.

| Steeple for the People and our end-of-the-year bbq was today. This is one of my favorite traditions of the year--our team dresses in costume and runs a 3000m steeplechase followed by grilled hamburgers that serves as our awards banquet. I've never run a steeplechase before, never had the desire to, but I can see the appeal. If only I could jump I might give it a serious try. We set the barriers to the women's height, and that was hard enough for me to clear. |

| Got a seed pair of Hokas from work and gave them their first run today. Interesting. I'm not sure about these shoes. On one hand, the amount of cushion is kind of awesome, on the other it's like I'm fighting against the squish with each stride. The hot spot on the ball of my right foot was happy, my patelar tendons in each knee were not. I think I'll do a few shorter runs in them, but I don't think this is something I could do longer runs in. They'd be great for larger folks, especially those with impact-related injuries. Not sure if they're right for me.

This load felt a little heavy today. My Sunday run was a little longer than normal, and I'm still shaky on this mile pace stuff. I've been wiring myself for the 10k for long enough that a little bit of lactic acid burn triggers the instinct to back off. Otherwise, I'm really happy with how training is going.

| Had the opportunity to try out a pair of DS Trainers from Asics today and was impressed. With how rigid the shoe is and its firm cushioning I expected it to be uncomfortable for a regular run, but I really like them. I ran my regular Padden loop from my place before the rain really set in, and it was quite enjoyable.

| I went on a loop I've been wanting to do for awhile. Starting at Arroyo Park I ran up Hemlock and Salal up to the back side of Raptor ridge, then out to Pine and Cedar Lakes. From there I had never been further but wanted to loop around to Chin Scraper and down to Lost Lake and back. The trail out of Pine & Cedar was not obvious, but I took a stab at one that hadn't looked used in awhile and it turned out to be correct. There were a couple more junctions I had to guess at but eventually found my way to Chin Scraper, which indeed lives up to its name. The top is the one part of the Chuckanuts that has been logged in recent years, and the view is spectacular. It's a 360 viewpoint with Mt. Baker to the east, the Puget Sound to the West, the Canadian Cascades to the north, and nice views of Lake Samish and Lost Lake.
I found the connecting trail to Lost Lake and was finally on familiar trail again. Total time was 2:36. Rougly 3000 feet of climbing between the two major hills.
EDIT: Turns out that wasn't Chin Scraper I went up. Turn left on the Lost Lake trail would have gotten me there instead of right. That would make the total climbing closer to 4000 ft... I might keep this in mind if I ever feel truly masochistic.

The weather was awful -- 24 degrees with a steady 15 mph wind -- would've been better off going down to the trails for a little shelter. I was layered with two long-sleeve tops, gloves, and tights, and I never felt warm.
Regardless, the workout went well. I went 5:22, 5:26, 5:21, 5:25, 5:25, 5:22 and ended feeling not terribly stressed. I'm still a couple months away, but the fitness is getting there. I figure without the wind each rep would be roughly 3-5 seconds faster.
