I haven't been running because my sprained ankle. I was able to jump up and down without any pain earlier in the week and finally got back out the door. I was afraid I was going to be slow and the run painful after being lazy for 2 months. I wasn't as slow as I thought I would be and the run was actually really pleasant. No aches or pains. Hopefully I can get my fitness back quickly. It really was nice and liberating to be out, if a bit cold. I had such good intentions with my new year goals and got derailed before I even got started. Glad to be back at it.

I have a cold all week, so I took it a bit easy today.
I was at the Mcdonalds drive through earlier in the week and the guy says "you look just like the richest man in the world." I didn't really know what to say, so there was an awkward silence. He says "you know, Bill Gates."

Read a discussion on the forum where Sasha was counseling that it was much better to run at a 10 minute pace and then walk than to run at 12 minute pace the whole way. He did say the pace required to improve was higher for heavier runners (me). So after running at a constant pace last time around, I followed Sashas advice. I did have a day off in between but finished quicker than when I ran the constant pace. Got up to 9:30 pace at times.
Went on a short 1.45 mile hike in the desert and saw what I believe was a Great Horned Owl sitting in a rock pile out in the middle of the day. He just sat there and watched us. I wonder if it was a nest. Kind of weird to see a big owl like that during the day. Also saw a Chuckwall in a crevice. Used the big face of my Garmin watch to reflect sun into the crack.

I did. I didn't have my camera the first time out, so I went back. Hopefully I can get some baby owl pics in a month or so. The nest doesn't have a lot of shade, so i hope they survive the heat.

I think your time is right. I think the 12 hour time was his last marathon. But that didn't count because he didn't have an official person from Guiness weigh him. Thats 22:26 mpm. He took 2 hours 4 minutes of his PR though.

From Burt on Fri, Mar 25, 2011 at 11:40:29 from 72.223.90.79
I did not know that. Aren't they pretty aggresive, too? I stopped and had the gals I was running with look at them. Probably wasn't a good idea.
From AZDesertmonsoon on Fri, Mar 25, 2011 at 12:19:37 from 204.17.31.126
Like everything, there are probably some aggressive individuals, but in general I don't think that is true. I think they are blind and not very bright. This leads to encounters where they charge people unknowingly, they scare you and you scare them and then they run off. They eat plants like cactus, so I don't think the dog has anything to worry about unless it is aggressive and gets all yippy and the Javelina feels it needs to fight back. They're really rather secretive. There are just a whole bunch of them. So when people do see them they tend to be when the Javelina wasn't paying attention (really good sense of smell and hearing)
My kid messed with my watch and I didn't realize it. I look down at my watch. "I haven't been running 5 minutes. Wait, it's not changing. I certainly haven't been running for 5 hours."

Hiked 6.59 miles roundtrip at the west fork of Oak Creek.
Went as far as the subway, where their was a bush of flowers covered in butterflies.
Also saw a Narrow-Headed Garter Snake, which are endangered and quite rare. it took off before I could snap a picture, but one from the web above. These aren't like normal garter snakes that stalk their prey from land. These anchor themselves to the bottom of the stream and wait for a fish to swim by while underwater. Baby Narrow-heads are quite small and when they anchor themselves to feed they get eaten by crawdads. Oak Creek doesn't have crawdads, which is why it is one of only a couple places left in Arizona they can be found.
The west fork of Oak Creek has a sandstone bottom without any mud/dirt. Perhaps crawdads need mud to live in, or perhaps no fisherman have released them as bait there. Other parts of Oak Creek have crawdads, so I think it must be the mud thing. Anyway, it was a lot of fun. One of the premier hikes in Arizona and judging by the number of people there, that isn't a secret. I counted 50 people on my way up and then quit counting, but I crossed paths with something over 100.
There were lots of maple trees which turn red in the fall, I will have to make another trip mid Octoberish.
Got home and went and saw Harry Potter with a friend. It has been a long day and I am bushed.

Had my running clothes on and headed for the door and I heard rain. It was coming down pretty good. I pretty much gave up on the run. But I dinked around and 20 minutes later it stopped. I really wanted to make a run at my training 5k PR of 33:14. I figured the rain was over and it cooled things down and I would be able to pull it off. Shortly after I got started the wind really picked up. I turned into a strong headwind for a mile. Weather underground shows the wind speed for that time at 48 mph with gusts up to 68. So while I didn't beat my time I feel I am now above where I was before. The lightning got scary for a bit.

First 4 miler ever. I drove to the canals so I could run on dirt and was sad to see that they have turned it into concrete. The other side of the canal was already paved. There was still some dirt to run on, but it wasn't very level and was often filled with tire ruts or was overly soft from the construction of the concrete path. They probably thought they were doing such a nice thing to "improve" things for the runners. Started running at 5:45 Just wanted to go slow and get the miles in. Very satisfying to be done with my run as on my drive home I saw a myriad of people getting their exercise in as it started to warm up from cool 88 degrees I got to run in.

On Sept 6th I ran a 5k in 29:43 or 9:33. I have been running very consistently since then on felt I could break under 29 minutes which would mean an average pace of 9:20. Early in the run I was at 8:30 pace and had to force myself to slow down. I didn't to a very good job at that and was running right around 9 mm.
About half way through the run, my HR was getting up there. I was in unchrarted territory and honestly didn't know if I could hold on. I ended up blowing up. It was hot outside on the evening run and I am still not over my cold. Even though I am confident I could have manage to meet my original goal by suffering to the end I decided that discretion was the better part of valor and I didn't want to risk getting more sick causing me to miss runs. I am slightly second guessing that decision now (it was only another .2 miles), but still mostly think it was a good one.
Pros: In hot weather while slightly sick I ran faster than I have ever run. Even having gone out too fast I know i could have significantly bested my time. I learned what not to do in a race. First two miles remarkably consistent. Built character
Cons: Man that was miserable at the end.

I would have had a cardiac infarction from going from so hot to so cold so quickly. A random old man on a bike told me to keep up the good work. That was encouraging.

I actually think that may have contributed to my father's death. He came home saying how hot it was. Then he got a huge cup of ice water to drink. That may have triggered it.
Anyway, one lady on a bike this morning called me sir. It made me feel good.

Yes, I did just comment during General Conference. But we're on a lunch break and we have it paused.
Men seem much more willing to give a polite wave. I pondered on this during my run and have decided their is a sizable group of women who assume men are perverts unless proven otherwise.

Or women who still think they are young. I think this is a big reason for the women only races. Lots of women really don't want to associate with men.

Didn't decide to do this race until yesterday. Started a little bit back from the start line. Way too many slower runners ahead and had to zig zag a bit. I new sub 28 minutes was a stretch, but I wanted to try to keep under 9 minute miles. I didn't make that, but this was still a pretty significant PR. The only other race I have run is a 5k last Thanksgiving where I finished in 33:46.
The race started late and it started to get a little warm. The hill right before the mill avenue bridge was tough. There were 2 girls in German outfits that I wanted to beat, but I couldn't outkick them. I feel good about my effore. I don't think I had a lot left in me.

Passed a pair of women runners. Might be the first time I've passed a runner as opposed to a run/walker. Took a while to gap them enough that I didn't have to listen to their girl talk.
A little faster than my 5 miler 2 weeks ago and felt stronger at the end. It was much cooler this time though. Saw several women out running and they all waved.
Had to get out early to make it back in time to pick up the bountiful basket.

I went to urgent care Sunday night with abdominal pain. Then went to a GI specialist on Tuesday, who sent me to the ER for an ultrasound and to double check that it wasn't my heart. I kept telling the doc that my symptoms really match Billiary Colic and I think he should check that. The ER did all kinds of tests on my heart and despite my persistent asking for an ultrasound, sent me home without one. By this time my GI doc was out of the office, so he couldn't refer me to get an ultrasound. That night I had the worse stomach pain of my life and went back to the ER. They wanted me to pay a second co-pay, but finally did an ultrasound and another Cat scan, but this time of my abdominal area. I had to drink some contrast dye, which I proceeded to throw up. They didn't give me any pain meds for 3 hours. I finally left the hospital at 6AM with the diagnosis of yep you guessed it - Billiary Colic. So now I am on pain meds and have a doc appointment on monday to schedule me to get my gall bladder removed. I am told it was partly caused by my rapid weight loss.
So don't know how long till I can run again.

Oh no! You were doing so great!
Great job on the diagnosis. I'll know who to go to when I'm ailing.
Ran the first 2 miles under 10:30 pace. It was warm out and I started to walk. After run, walked another 1.5 miles through gilbert riparian area.
My doc appointment is tomorrow. I haven't been on any pain meds since friday AM, although part of the decision to stop was being tired of being spacey and sleeping all the time rather than not having pain. I really don't want to lose all the hard work I have put in getting fit. I plan on running again tomorrow morning. We'll see what the doctor says, but I am pretty confident he is going to pull the gall bladder out. Hopefully we can get it over with soon and I can get back running in time to still run the mesa turkey trot.

Couldn't ask for nicer weather. Very grateful to be out in it.
Really pushed it, but didn't get a very good time. Feel like I have lost of bit of fitness, but not a lot. If this is my last run for a while, hopefully it will make my return a little shorter.
I think I have an argument for the doc not to do surgery, we'll see if he buys it.
Was running late, so only ran a 5k. A bit chilly this morning.
Doc wanted to have surgery on my Gallbladder. I brought up a drug that might work instead and he said it was very popular in Europe, but Americans generally weren't patient enough for it to work. He doesn't think it will work, but said it was worth a shot and didn't really have any risk. So I am taking a pill 3 times a day for probably the next 6 months unless I have another attack and then I will just have the surgery.

Had banked quite a bit of time prior to the long gradual hill up power road. A little shy of the 5 mile mark I checked my avg pace for the whole race and I was at 29:36. 29:38 was the pace for one hour. The rest was down hill, but my HR was about 184 and I was having trouble staying under 10mm. Don't know how I made up 50 seconds over that last mile. Felt like I was getting passed by lots more people than I was passing for the whole race
