Ok first of all I had a huge eye opener on this race from a different perspective as I was in charge of the aid station on mile 6.  I also ran the race too. So I have to thank my wife and Father in Law who ended up very sticky from gatorade and Bill my brother in law for taking charge and Kimball the slowest runner I know. lol Ok so the race got started a bit late which gave me time to do a 1 mile warmup to the secret potties.  I have been suffering from stomach issues the past week from switching my runs from morning to the heat of the day. I think that is what its from.  I went to the start and had several runners ask how I got the bib number 1. It was actually from Kris Siddoway for helping out with the aid station but I had to lie and tell everyone I won the race last year. haha My main goal in this race was to try and stay with Paul Peterson for as long as I could and I was hoping that would be mile 6.  Little did I know from talking to Paul after the race that he had the same goal except to keep up with Patrick (Kenyan runner) for 6 miles. The gun went off and Patrick and Terran and Paul sprinted! I thought it was to get a good position in the race so I went after them and there were 4 runners all together and me and a 13 year old who I didnt take serious at all. After a half mile I couldnt believe they were still in sprint mode. I immediately dropped back as I knew they were in 4:45 mode.  Not much hill to help out either.  I had a little pack of runners with me including the 13 year old who was so funny to watch but had a lot of talent! He would surge and then fall back to our group and the runners in the group wouldnt go in front of me and help out with the slight headwind.  Every time the kid came back he would tell me good job! It was funny.  I thought for sure he would die off at mile 3 but he hung strong till mile 8 which is where I had stomach issues again. I talked to the kid as he told me he was going to slow down and I told him to relax his shoulders and take it easy for a mile and that I was going to use the Porta John at mile 9.  He fell back about 200 yards in that mile and I jumped in the crapper and did my stomach issue relief and then when I came out 2 minutes later I saw a guy coming up behind but the kid was a .25 mile ahead of me so I pushed a fast mile  and then the dreaded mile 11 and 12 came up which I seriously hate. It slowed me to a 6 pace instantly and I caught the kid at mile 11.5 and told him to try and stay with me. He did great! at mile 12 we finally had a down hill and I told him I was going to speed up a bit and he didnt want to so I took off and with a half mile to go I turned to tell him to pick it up and he did! I ended up about 20 seconds ahead of him but was amazed at his talent!  I tried to do a cool down jog with Kelli after but only made it a half mile and had to walk back. I almost threw up several times which I think was from the humidity.  I took 1st in age and 7th overall.  I took Paul Petersons money he won and his trophy to his house and talked to him a bit at his house afterward. Very fun day!

Kelli, I was going to tell how cute you looked in my report but missed it. Everyone, She shouldve won the cutest dressed award! :)

Walter James!!

I LOVE this report! Seriously, nicely done on all accounts. That 13 year old rocks! Do you know how long he has been racing? Extremely impressive.

Congrats on another fine race. Sorry about the tummy.

Nice race! It was good to meet you. If I can help you out with the cross country team I am more than willing (I have most Saturdays free and I run at night on weekdays). I am a structural engineer so I will keep you in mind if anyone asks (I may need you down the road as well).

From Kelli on Sun, Aug 29, 2010 at 18:52:34 from 71.219.102.155

I definitely deserved an award for that! They should give out cash prizes for the best dressed. Really, I just wear that running outfit so people can find me, I am not a huge fan of standing out. ;o)

Great race, sorry about the tummy. I knew you were sick when you could not maintain a 9:30 pace with me!!!

Tell Misty and family thanks for running the aide station with the messiest gatorade!!! Poor them!!!

From MichelleL on Sun, Aug 29, 2010 at 19:00:48 from 70.58.32.131

I saw your time and thought I might be able to almost hang onto you, but I see you had some issues causing your race finish time. Sorry the bod didn't cooperate, hopefully it will get back in line soon. Good for you for helping the youngin, too.

We'll need some verification on that cash prize hand off!

I saw Misty at the mile 6, I waved to her, but I am not sure she could tell it was me.

Kelli's skirt was way cute, plus my on-top-of-the-head ponytail gave me negative style points. I am surprised no one's razzed me about how goofy I looked yet.

From Kelli on Sun, Aug 29, 2010 at 19:08:01 from 71.219.102.155

Hey, Michelle, if I wear an on top of the head ponytail like that will I be as fast as you???? I will totally do it. You looked as cute as a bug in a rug.

From Paul on Sun, Aug 29, 2010 at 19:26:29 from 174.27.160.216

Nice job Walter, too bad about the long potty stop though. Good seeing you, and thanks for bringing by the $$$.

From Walter on Sun, Aug 29, 2010 at 20:53:55 from 24.10.169.110

Chris, honestly, you should have seen these guys take off! I sprinted with them to get to the front and then they never stopped! They were probably doing a 4:40 pace the first half mile! I was in awe.

Sammie, yes, I have been racing too much. I need to just concentrate on training.

Burt, I am in constant awe from running with high schoolers how fast they get going and always anticipate a fade. It really didnt happen when I expected it from this kid. He will be someone to watch for in a few years.

Teena Marie, I found out that he lives near Paul Peterson in Smithfield and I dont know how long hes been running but he was a really fun kid to run and talk to.

Chad, I will talk to James about getting some help. I have been asked by several people. Its so dang fun!

Kelli, yeah they had a brisk wind that kept knocking the drinks over. I instructed them to only fill the gatorade cups half full. Big mistake. And yes you did stand out! Im glad I hung out with you after so I could get recognized! haha

Michelle, please! You are gorgeous! I wished you wouldve been close to me at mile 9 porta potti. I knew I was out of where I shouldve been so I couldve ran with you. Oh and I did give Paul his money, I promise...All of it!

Paul, you know if I cant win TOU Half I at least deserve the number 1 bib. Next year Ill have Kris get you the #2 bib. lol This South Jordan boy has had plenty of chances of winning over the past 10 years. My ties to Logan preceed me at least to be a half Loganite. Congrats to you for evening things out at home boy/girl. Now you can try for twins or triplets. a 1st 2nd 3rd finish! lol Be good and enjoy your time off with the family and a cry baby!

From Jon on Sun, Aug 29, 2010 at 22:41:26 from 68.119.211.149

I can't believe you were bib 1! Nice job at kicking some 12 year olds butt :)

From Walter on Mon, Aug 30, 2010 at 00:49:29 from 24.10.169.110

JD, Thanks. I really enjoy the TOU half. Its my favorite.

Tom, hope to see you out at an event soon my friend!

Jon, He was 13! 13 Jon! I thought he was in high school. He took off at a 5:05 first mile and hung in there pretty good. I dont know why I didnt see you or Cody out. I come up there and mess around your course and you all are no where to be found. My gain! lol Invite me out East to your new course and Ill show you how to run it. haha Never a dull moment huh...

From Adam RW on Mon, Aug 30, 2010 at 09:30:43 from 155.101.152.123

Nice race Walter. Way to help the running community and inspire an up and coming talent.

From Superfly on Mon, Aug 30, 2010 at 10:24:00 from 208.117.127.110

Good job Walt. Get those potty issues worked out. It may be from switching to running in the heat as opposed to the mornings. Or it could also be that most of the time on morning runs we go out with basically an empty stomach. Runs later in the day usually have to deal with food we've eaten up to that point. I hate my afternoon/evening runs... not just because it's hot but because I try to wait 3 hours after any food before a run. So by the time I get going I'm hungry for dinner.

From Jason McK on Mon, Aug 30, 2010 at 12:25:52 from 63.255.173.99

Nice race! Sometimes I wish I had someone ahead of me that I thought was going to die off, but didn't. Pride would help me run a faster race, just to keep up with them. Of course, as pride cometh before the fall, I would die off at the end because I tried to keep up with someone better than me...
