One thing that helps to strengthen the ankle is to balance on it. So, when it gets feeling better, start standing on one leg all of the time! Sounds weird, but that came right from the physical therapist.

I am sure a few days totally off will do the trick for your ankle, even though you are probably impatient about it! I agree with Kelli - balancing exercises, and also range of motion exercises.
