60 minute swim. Kept it nice and easy but I still was faster than any of my recent swims!

1 mile TM run!!!!! Yay. I ran and my calf felt perfectly fine.  Maybe I'll try another 1 mile run tonight as part of my nightly PT.

Did my PT and ran another easy mile on the TM.  Calf still felt good.  Hopefully tomorrow it will still be fine.

6 mile trail run. My longest run in months. It was slow but my calf seemed ok even though my hammy was still uncomfortable.
Then I went to my PT appointment. I had one spot on my calf that was bothersome so she needled it. Also she worked my hammy pretty good.
Then I swam for 1 hour, once again my fastest 1 hour swim. It is going to be hard to keep getting faster every time in the pool. I'm guessing this next week I'll start to plateau.

Both my calf and hammy felt really good today. I rode 48 miles on my bike.  Usually my hammy hurts at the insertion point with my glute but it didn't bother me today. It was a really good ride for me. Things seem to be turning the corner with my injuries.

1 hour swim.  As suspected I leveled off righ about the pace I swam at Friday. Then I followed it with a 2 mile TM run, which was great becasue neither my calf nor hamstring bothered me.  I'm so excite!!! I guess that needling Brittnay did Friday really worked.  I could tell something different happened this time when she stuck it into the aggrivated spot I felt a sharp pop.  Hopefully that broke up whatever it is that has been causing my issues.

Did my PT work while watching the college football national championship.

Then 2 mile TM run.  Calf still felt perfect!!! I could sence a bit of tightness in the hammy but nothing to bothersome.

I readjusted my aerobars to a mor comfortable position which I loved this morning and it made me a bit faster than normal, but now I've somehow pinched my gear shifting cable and I can't shift to all my gears.  Guess I'll have to take the bike in and get professional help.  Anyways, I rode 20 miles with 1300 feet vert.

Then I ran 3 miles on the TM.  My calf still feels 100% and my hammy felt better today than it has since I strained it, I'd say 90%!!!!

My nightly PT work is starting to pay off.  I'll get some more done tonight.

19 miles cycling with aerobars fully functional.  I had to have the guys at the shop put them on properly for me so my gear cables aren't pinched and I can no use all my gears with the aerobars.  I was about 4 minutes faster today on my usual before work ride that I've been doing for a while. Yay! Magic of aerobars I guess. Or maybe I'm getting in better fitness???

Then 3 mile on TM at a decent pace this morning.  I felt good to let my legs run, but I did feel a tiny little something in my calf after I was done.  I'll monitor that closely.

More PT work tonight, especially on that calf.

65 minute swim which ended up being exactly 2 miles. I'm hoping to get to where I can do 2 miles in 60 minutes but I'm really happy where my swimming is right now.

24 mile ride at a faster pace than usual but with what felt like the same amount of effort.  Then 4 miles on the TM at a comfortable pace which ended up being exactly 8 minute miles.  I know that doesn't sound fast, but I've been doing my TM runs after swimming or biking closer to 9 minute miles.  Maybe my fitness is taking a turn for the better.

And I'm starting to get that feeling like I could go forever.  From past experience I know that is when I need to take an easy week or I'll end up injured.  Hopefully this upcoming easy week will set me up for improvement in the weeks to come.

Tri simulation day.
I woke up a bit early and ate a solid breakfast. About an hour later I started my swim, 1500 m right about 30 minutes.
I changed into my bike gear, ate an energy bar and drank a sports drink then rode 32 miles which I averaged exactly 17 mph.
Then I switched to my running shoes, ate another energy bar and drank another sports drink and did a 7 mile run that I averaged a bit over 8 minute miles.
I finished feeling really good like I could have done a lot more or gone faster.

2 mile swim. Felt decent.
101 mile bike with miles 89-95 climbing 1200 feet. It was super windy so it was a difficult ride but overall  felt pretty good.
10 mile run. This is where the wheels fell off. I did a run for a bit then walk for a bit thing and it was still hard. I was completely spent by 10 miles but I did average 9:39 per mile. I'd take that if I could keep it up for 26.2 miles.

Then I transitioned to running. I was trying to keep it easy but was moving right around 8:00 miles for the first 10 miles which was too fast because then the wheels slowly started to come off for the next 6 miles at which point I completely blew up and had to start walking. I called Doone and continued walking until she picked me up right before mile 18.

Then I did a long ride. It ended up being 100 miles at an average pace of 19.3 mph. I didn't think I was capable of going that fast for that far. I did stop about 10 miles short of my plan because I was out of fluid and when I stopped to refill I just decided to end my ride.

I have a PT appointment at 11:00 this morning and I wanted to get in a long bike/run so I started at midnight. I rode 100 miles which took 5 hours 33 minutes plus stopped time. Then I got out the door a little before 6:00 for a 20 mile run which went great through 16 miles then I started getting slower and slower until I was reduced to a walk fo the last 2 miles. For some of the middle miles I was doing a run 4 minutes then walk 1 minute routine which seemed to work nicely and kept me right around 9 minutes per mile. I think I will employ that strategy from the start of the run on race day to try and avoid the dreaded bonk.

Ironman World Championship St. George

The day started bright and early with a 4:25 am shuttle ride to Sand Hollow Resivior. Blake went with me. We sat in the bleachers and watched the sunrise then at 6:15 the professionals began their swim. I was really nervous. Eventually I had to go get ready and my wave began around 7:20. It took me a good 10 minutes to find my groove in the swim but once I had a nice rhythm it went quickly and I was out of the water in 1:17, faster than I anticipated.

I transitioned to the bike and was feeling really good, just trying to keep it at an easy effort. I felt pretty good throughout the ride. I had ups and downs but mostly did well with my hydration and fueling. Right near the end on the final downhill, my head and limbs started tingling and I had to fight to keep my focus.

In the transition area I knew I was in trouble. I was light headed but after about 20 minutes I headed out walking. After a couple miles walking I started feeling better and began to run the downhills. My legs were fine but my stomach was queezey. Then I started throwing up about mile 6. By mile 10 I couldn't walk straight so I stopped. A nice guy named Wayne helped me out and eventually I began walking with him again. He walked with me a few miles and Blake met us as well. When I got to the end of the first loop at 13.1 miles I knew my day was over.

I took a complete rest day yesterday.

This morning was swim day.  I did just over 1 mile.  I normally do more on Thursday but it was pretty windy and therefore really choppy out there.  I'm glad I did it to get used to swimming in bad conditions, but cutting it short was the right call.

Summer is definitely here. It was almost 100 degrees by the time I finished. My left calf was bugging me by the end. I'm not sure what I did that caused it. Maybe it was the jumping rope I did Monday evening. I didn't start having any issues though until this morning and I haven't run since Monday. I really wish this would quit happening.

4 miles warm up, uphill pretty slow, then turned around and ran back down 4 miles at average pace of 7:05.  It's so sad that my downhill tempo pace isn't even what my mp pace used to be.  Such is life in your 50s.

23 miles!

First 11 uphill and very slow right around 10 minute miles. Then the next 10 miles at a few seconds faster than goal marathon pace. Then one mile of walk jogging. I stopped my watch at 22 but still was an uphill mile from home and I was spent so I walked the 23rd mile nice and slow home.

It was a warmer morning than I had hoped, upper 70s. I drank about a gallon of fluid and still lost 7 lbs on the run. I'm praying for a cold day on race day. My sweat rate is just too high to replace all the fluids I lose when it is warm even a little.

After 1 mile warm up the plan was to do 8 x 1200 m with 400 m recovery. During my second recovery I started to feel something a bit off in my right calf so I stretched it a bit and continued on. It didn't seem to bother me much while running the repeats but during the recovery laps I was feeling it a tiny bit. I finished my seventh feeling really good effort wise and began my recovery lap and the niggle in the right calf felt more pronounced. I'm sure I could have done my 8th 1200 as planned but I decided the risk wasn't worth the benefit and ended my run after that recovery lap for a total of 8 miles.

Now that I'm writing this about an hour after finishing my calf seems fine. Hopefully it was nothing and I will be able to continue on with the planned workouts for the rest of the week. Tomorrow I already had planned for a cross training day so I won't know until Friday how the calf is doing.

It was a beautiful morning for a run, low 50s, sunny and calm. Hopefully we get perfect weather for race day next week although I'm almost never that lucky.
I started out running uphill to the top of Cherry Tree for 6 miles at an easy pace. My legs felt really good. Then right at the top I felt a little twinge in my left calf, the opposite one that was bothering me so I stretched a bit before running down. I was trying to run mp but I ended up being 15 seconds per mile too fast. 7:49 pace running downhill just feels so slow and too easy but I know I need to be disciplined and not go too fast on race day or I'll fall apart at the end. Anyways those last 6 downhill were easy but I did feel a little tightness in my calf as it went on. Now late in the day it is sore but not terribly so. I'm going to have to be very careful this week so that it is good to go on race day.

Big Bear Marathon

My calf was bothering me last night so I KT taped it and told Blake that if it didn't feel better in the morning I wasn't going to run. When I got up this morning I tested it out with a little run up and down his street and decided to give it a go.

It was a perfect day to run a marathon, cold and sunny with no wind and a serious downhill course. Blake and I ran together from the start keeping our pace right at my BQ qualifying time of 3:25. My calf bothered me on and off from the start but I decided to go as far as it would let me. We had so much fun running and talking. The miles went by quickly. At about mile 22 I started laboring a bit and my calf started hurting more. I continued to press on and mad it past mile 25 still on pace to BQ when suddenly my calf quit and I told Blake to continue on. I had to walk the last mile which was no fun and I clearly lost a lot of time and didn't BQ, but I loved the race just getting to run with Blake. We really had a lot of fun. He finished strong in 3:25:21.
