Yep Dale. It's almost raceday! Catalina island off the coast of Southern California is where the race is. I'm just watching the weather. Looks like we might be running in the rain.

From Rhett on Thu, Jan 07, 2016 at 15:26:54 from 24.121.249.174

That's a good question HBR. It's been raining throughout the whole west for the last week. Right now it looks like we might get a break in the rain tomorrow and until Saturday afternoon. Since its a trail race on dirt and I don't want to run in sloppy mud, I hope the current forecast is right.

AVALON 50

Today was the day I officially became an ultra-marathoner.  This was my first race ever over 26.2.

Blake and I left Havasu Friday morning around 8:30, caught the Catalina Express ferry at 2:00 and were on the the island in the cute town of Avalon around 3:00.  We checked into our hotel and took a quick walk around town. It's very small so didn't take long.  We then went back to our room, got our drop bags together, and went and picked up our race bibs and dropped off our drop bags.  We had dinner at the Lobster Trap and naturallly had fresh caught lobster.  We then retired to our room and settled down for a good night's sleep.

We awoke at 4:15 and got ready.  The race start was right outside the front of the hotel.  It was way low key.  We weren't even exactly sure which way we were supposed to run until we asked another runner.  Exactly at 4:59:50 (I was looking at my satalite watch.) We quietly heard a man saying 10, 9, 8, 7... and the race was underway at 5:00:00 exactly.

I've never run this far so I'm not sure what kind of pace to run.  A few guys shot off fairly quicklly, but Blake and I just ran a nice easy pace like we were going out for a nice easy long run.  It was dark, so we were all using lights to see.  From the first step we were heading uphill, not too steep at first, but by mile 2 it was getting steeper and steeper.  We ran most of the first 5 miles of climbing, but in some spots it was too steep so we power walked.  I think it took over an hour to do the first 5 miles. (My watch froze up at mile 46.3 of the race and I lost all my data.)  We then started downhill and it was still dark.  At this point I dropped Blake. I run in the dark on trails all the time, he doesn't and he didn't put fresh batteries in his light, so he didn't feel comfortable running fast down the hill.  Basically I ran, and ran, and ran, and also did a lot of power walking up steep hills for a long time by myself.  Once the sun came up around 7:00 it was beautiful to see the island and the ocean.

I don't think there was any part of this race that was flat. We were always either going up or down and quite often it was REALY steep.  Some of my miles were in the 17 minute range and a lot of my miles were around 7 minutes.  Blake planned on not running the whole race. He went out about 20 miles and then went back to the drop bag station (around mile 34) and waited for me.  It was great to see him and at that point I was still running strong, when I was not having to walk because of the steep hills.  I left that aid station in 4th place! Crazy, my first ultra and here I was at mile 34 in 4th place.  I was pretty excited.  Then at mile 36 all the steep hills caught up with me, and both of my hammys cramped.  I haven't cramped running since my very first mararhon in 2004.  I guess it is only fitting that I cramped in my very first ultra.

For the next 3 miles I could only walk.  I tried to run a few times and the hammys would cramp right back up.  Wow, I forgot how painful that is, and how much it locks your legs up for a while.  During these 3 miles I was passed by a number of runner.  About mile 39 I gave it another go, running super slow at first and then gradually picking it back up.  Blake did a good job reminding me to keep it slow.  We were running with another guy at this poing who had done this race a number off times. He told us that if we could get to the last aid station by 12:00 we had a chance of finishing under 8 hours, but the next few miles after that aid staion were really steep uphill.  We arived at that aid station at exactly 12:00 to the second.  I downed some coke (it was the only thing I could stomach at that point) and walked on.  I didn't think we were ever going to summit the mountain, but when we finally did, I knew the last few miles were all downhill...steep!  I took off leaving Blake and ran as fast as I could down that mountain.  ( Was running right around 7 minutes I think. )  When I finally saw Avalon I was so excited.  I ran hard to the finish and crossed the line in 7:56:14 and 13th place overall.

Blake came in a few minutes later and we went and stood in the ocean for about 15 minutes to ice our legs.  It was cold.  Thanks Blake for sticking with me and helping me finish that race when I was cramping and didn't know if I would make it.

I really enjoyed doing the ultra and hope to do many more.

Well done Rhett! 50 miles is far. I think 50k is enough for me.

Reading your report made me want to go back to Catalina. As a kid we used to sail to Avalon with my grandfather. I've camped their and hiked the island's peaks. I used to go to scout camp on Catalina, just north of the Isthmus/Two Harbors.

Today was the second annual Hot Air Balloon Half in conjunction with the annual Hot Air Balloon Festival here in Lake Havasu City.  We doubled the number of racers this year!  That means 2. It was 50 degrees and mildly windy this morning.  Unfortunately it was too windy for the Hot Air Balloons to go up like planned.

We started the race a little after 7:30.  My goal was to run 6:52 miles for as long as I could.  Having run the 50 mile race just 6 days ago, I wasn't sure how long I could keep up that pace.  I hit the halfway at 44:59, one second ahead of pace, and as I turned around I was pleasantly surprised to see Blake only about 50 meters behind me.

I was starting to tire soon after the turn around but kept pushing.  Miles 9, 10, and 11 my pace started dropping though and about a quarter mile before hitting mile 11 Blake caught me. I slipped in behind him and ran for a bit.  It was nice to have someone there with me and my body soon relaxed and I was able to pick it back up again.  We ran side by side for the last 2.1 miles averaging 6:45.  I thought Blake was going to drop back, but I told him he had to stay with me and he dug deep and did it.  We crossed the finish line, 13.1 on our watches, at 1:31:25 in a dead tie for first place and since we are in differnet age groups we each won our age group. :)

A few things I learned about running a half marathon 6 days after a 50 miler:  1)  It takes more than six days to get your legs at 100% after a 50 miler,  2)  13.1 miles seems really short after running 50 miles,  and 3)  13.1 hurts as bad as a 50 miler, just in a different way.

Congratulations to Blake who set a huge half marathon PR today, and he ran 40 miles of the 50 last Saturday with me.  He is looking good for his first BQ next month in Phoenix!

I was cruising along this morning running at a low HR in the low 130s thinking how great is feels to be running 7:30 minute miles and not feel like I was working at all when all of the sudden about 8 1/2 miles into the run my left calf tighted and then gave me that sharp pain that I have gotten in the past when my calf gives me fits. I recognized what was happening really fast so was able to stop immediately and not casue any extra damage, so hopefully within a week I'll be back running strong again.  It sure is depressing though, that everytime I start to peak, my calfs give me problems!  My amazing running turned to a depressing run really fast.  I walked in the last 1 1/2 miles for a total of 10.

I did everything keeping my HR right at 135 which I found is way easier in the gym than out running in the real world.  My calf felt perfectly fine.  My old self would be out running tomorrow, but I'm going to take a few more days of cross training to be safe.

Not sure what to expect this morning with my calf on the mend for the last week and a half, but I felt like it was close to 100% yesterday doing cross training so I headed out with Blake this morning for a long run.

The first 16 miles we kept it nice and easy keeping my HR in the 130s then we dropped to mp for the last 4 miles doing those at 7:05 pace.  I felt great.  That was the most energy I've had on a long run in a long time and my calf gave me no problems.  I also did this run on only water and the last time I ate was yesterday's dinner around 5:30.  I've been training my body to burn fat for fuel and I think it is working really well.

From Hillbilly Runner on Fri, Feb 05, 2016 at 00:27:31 from 173.191.121.34

What are the trails you run on like? Are they mostly dirt? Sounds like you really enjoy them and have a good time. I do a fair amount of mountain biking on our trails and a lot of people run them. They have a lot of rocks and roots and thing that could trip a person up so I don't run them very often.

From Rhett on Fri, Feb 05, 2016 at 18:58:36 from 66.185.237.180

Matt. I haven't done any biking since November when I did my last half ironman. After my marathon at the end of this month I'll start tri training again.

HBR. I wish we had some nice dirt trails to run on but the trails I run on are very rocky and technical. I usually am only able to run 9 to 10 minute miles out there but I think that may be that is also why I like it so much.

Total running ended up being right at 2 miles.

My legs felt light this morning.  For some reason jumping rope always helps my feel light on my feet, probably because contact time with the ground is so quick and I'm up on my toes the whole time.

2016 Phoenix Marathon

Blake and I ran the Phoenix Marathon today.  It was warm and sunny but no significant wind.  The plan was to try and pace Blake to a 3:05 marathon since his BQ time is 3:10.  The actual 3:05 pacer was crazy faster than he should have been right from the start so we did our own thing and ran the first half in 1:32:01 exactly were we wanted to be at that point.  With the warm weather I was dumping water on my head at every aid station starting at mile 7 but it still caught up with us eventually.  During the 18th mile Blake dropped of the pace so I slowed a bit hoping he would come back to me.  At mile 20 I was at 2:22:25 which still had us on pace to get a fast enough time to get him into Boston but he was no longer near me.  At that point I was starting to feel it a bit and we already had decided that if he didn't get a good BQ time we would run Revel Mt. Charelston on May 7th to try again, so I decided to mail it in and cruise in to an easy BQ without spending myself too much.  I only ran an 8:26 pace for the last 6.2 and finished in 3:14:38 for a BQ with 10+ minutes to spare. I turn 45 in May so I only needed a 3:25.  I was tired at the end, but my legs on not sore like they usually are when I run a marathon all out, so with a week of cross training I should be ready to pick right back up on marathon training.

After Blake realized he wasn't going to make his BQ, he did the smart thing and walk/jogged the rest of the way in, so didn't finish until 3:34:??.  Now we get to run another marathon!  Hopefully he will get that BQ and we can enjoy Boston together next year.  His wife says we are all going whether he qualifies or not.  :)  We'll see.

Fantastic race for you! I cannot believe you can run that pace and feel so good at the end!!!! Well, yes I can, you are Rhetticulous!!! Sorry about the heat and your buddy missing his goal time! We definitely have to meet up for the marathon in May! How far is that from you guys? I am challenged when it comes to geography.

Thanks Smooth, with running, especially BQing, getting older is a wonderful thing! You never told me what the #8333 means.

Tom K, thanks. I figured it was best to save my best for another day.

Teena, Vegas is just over 2 hours north of us…closer than Phoenix. I need to register. Hopefully it isn't filled up. It would be way fun meet up at some point.

Dale, yes I think the heat was one of the main reasons he crashed.

Thanks HBR, hopefully we will get Blake a BQ at Mt. Charleston in May. We both already signed up. After that I'm sticking to ultras for a while. I think they are way less painful and more adventurous than road marathons.

From Rhett on Wed, Mar 02, 2016 at 11:11:48 from 24.121.249.174

Yasir, I really want to get Blake to Boston with me and I think it helped me run a smart race knowing I was pacing him. If he had still been with me at mile 20 I'm sure I could have pushed myself to at least a 3:07, but once I was gone, my motivation to push hard was gone as well.

30 minutes easy on the stationary bike for a little active recovery.  Legs feel really good.

This is next part is so I can refer back in the future as I continue my discovery of what I can do on low carbs.  I don't think I really bonked at all in the race but the last 6 miles were tough.  Not sure if it was the heat, having been sick the previous 2 weeks, the mild calf injury I had to deal with the last 8 weeks before the race, or if my nutrition had something to do with it.

Anyways, here is what I ate previous to and during the marathon:

Friday

Breakfast- 4 eggs, sauteed spinach, avacado, parmesan cheese

Lunch- 2 large bowls of chicken and vegtable soup

Snack- 2 Lara bars

Dinner- 6 oz steak, 12 grilled shrip, small salad without crutons, brocolli

Saturday

Prerace- A glass of unsweetened almond milk with 2 tablespoons coconut oil

During race- 3 gels and a lot of water

I meant to take a 4th gel around mile 21 but I forgot.

Look up metatarsalgia and see if it fits. I'd be happy to help you anyway I can via the inter-universe!! Ha! :-)

From Rhett on Fri, Apr 08, 2016 at 14:31:41 from 24.121.249.174

Doone has metatarsalgia so I know all about that. I guess it is possible but I'm not thinking that is it. I think HBR might be right. It may just be some weird form of PF that is causing pain in the forefoot instead of at the heel. Whatever it is, not running seems to be the only thing that really helps. Thanks for helping. Are you still a go for Mt. Charlseton?

From Teena Marie on Fri, Apr 08, 2016 at 15:09:56 from 199.79.55.13

Sharp shooting pains, tingling, etc. more likely has some nerve involvement. Morton's neuroma, metatarsalgia, etc. Let me know if you think of any other specific details.

From Rhett on Fri, Apr 08, 2016 at 15:42:28 from 24.121.249.174

Is there any treatment for those types of things other than rest. I have this thing called an inferno wrap that worked miracles when I had a heel spur that I've been doing. It shots some sort waves that heat up my foot. It's supposed to promote blood to the tendons.

I wish I were outside running this morning. It was in the low 60s and raining.  That would have been amazing.  I don't get to run very often in the rain out here in the desert. But, since I don't enjoy biking in the rain I did my long workout for the week inside at the gym. :(

2 very gentle easy miles on the tail this morning. No pain, but was getting less comfortable the more I ran.  It will be interesting to see how it feels tomorrow.

I decided, with my cut back on running from this injury, it would be a good time to start doing my core work again so I spent about 20 minutes doing core work after the run.

From Rhett on Tue, Apr 12, 2016 at 10:05:28 from 24.121.249.174

Tom, I'm not exactly sure exactly when I injured it. It's just one of those running injuries. I'm not even exactly sure what's wrong. I just know that when I run on it, it hurts after a few miles and then the next day it really hurts. If I take a week off it feels fine, then I try and run and start the whole cycle over. I guess I should try taking 2 weeks off this next time.

It's looking less and less likely that I will be able to run any of the marathon on May 7th. I woke up to a sore foot this morning after those 2 really slow, easy miles yesterday.  Oh well, if I can't run, I'll just go and be a cheerleader for my buddy Blake and hope he BQs so we can run Boston together next year.

50 minutes cycling. It was beautiful out this morning. I can't run but I'm glad I was able to get outside for some exercise.

I went to the podiatrist this afternoon. He took X-rays. There is no fracture. That's the good news. He says my 4th metatarsal joint is inflamed. All I can do is rest it. That means no running till it is better. Then he says after 2 months if it isn't better he will inject it with cortisone. Looks like the odds of me running a marathon in a little over 3 weeks is small.

Boo for foot injury! Yay for booked hotel Boston'17. I did too even though I don't have

a BQ yet. Larry made me book it and it is the Revere Hotel (formerly Radisson). I also registered yesterday for the Mt. Charleston Marathon. We're taking our small motorhome and camping in Kyle Canyon. Just an excuse for a road trip or running addiction. I hope to see you and your friend then.

Hope your foot heals up quickly and nicely and you can RACE soon.

From Rhett on Sat, Apr 30, 2016 at 16:53:26 from 66.185.237.180

Smooth! It looks like there weather should be nice and cool next week so maybe you will get your BQ then. I really hope I get to see both you and Larry. Did Larry end up going to Boston with you? We booked a room at the Boston Park Plaza for next year. By yesterday night the places we had stayed in the past were already booked on marathontours. It is close to the finish line though.

From Smooth on Sun, May 01, 2016 at 23:40:35 from 75.162.121.64

Yes, Larry got the doctor's okay to travel. He wore a mask and used hand sanitizer frequently. He wasn't able to walk very far nor lift anything more than 15 lbs. But he did well with the amount of walking. He ate well, slept well and really enjoyed every bit Boston has to offer. He missed having Doone there to be his cheer buddy. The spot where they used to cheer at outside the foodcourt was cordoned off. I think they're remodeling the foodcourt; so it will be nice when you guys go next year.

I am not very confident that I'll BQ at Mt. Charleston. I am not in BQ shape, yet. At any rate, it'll be fun. And I hope we see you. We are driving down on Thur staying at a RV campground 2.5 miles from the start. Not firmed up yet on Fri. night's lodging. I will message Doone on FB our cell numbers. May be we can meet up on Fri.

So Bro-Rhett what are your plans for breaking a 3 hour marathon again?

From Rhett on Sat, Jun 25, 2016 at 14:57:11 from 66.185.237.180

Hey Slick, how have you been? How'd the GreenBay Marathon go? I hope to get back to that sub 3 again, but as time moves on it is looking less and less likely. My plan is to run a lot of slow miles to build my aerobic base and then squeeze in a few faster miles for a small period before a marathon and then hope to stay injury free and have perfect weather conditions on a race day. It's going to take everything coming together perfectly to get back under 3. My next marathon won't be until Boston and that is my PR course, but I would have a better chance at a race like Mt. Charleston. Maybe I will run Boston as a training run and then turn around and run Mt. Charleston 12 days latter and go for that sub 3 again next year. In the mean time I'm training for some 50 mile trail runs.

I received my new Altr Lone Peak 3.0 trail shoes in the mail last night so I took them out for a spin this morning. I mostly liked them but found them to be a bit sloppy on the technical parts of the trails. Once when the trail was really sloped off to my right the shoe went one way and my foot the other causing me to go down. Hopefully I will be able to find a better way to lace them and make them hug my foot better.  I do love the large tow box and the amount of cushioning us perfect.

I ended up running 14 miles. It was 106 outside before I finished.  I took 100 oz of water with me and drank every drop.  After finishing I jumped in my pool drank another 40 oz of fluid then had breakfast. Even with all that fluid and breakfast I still lost 5 lbs from my pre run weight.  That's a lot of sweating!

From Rhett on Mon, Jul 25, 2016 at 09:11:11 from 66.185.237.180

Yasi. It's tough right now but in another six weeks it will start too cool down and I will have a long fall/winter/spring of beautiful running weather.

IJR. No it's much less than that. I couldn't run with 5 gallons on my back. It's got to be less than 2 gallons.

From Tom K on Mon, Jul 25, 2016 at 18:27:27 from 66.87.149.206

The Googles says that 100 oz. Is 0.78 gallons. Losing 5 pounds on a single run is crazy! You are a tough dude. When it's this hot and i go with the camelbak, my back gets tore up from that thing. Do you get the same thing, or is it different in the no humidity world?

From Rhett on Mon, Jul 25, 2016 at 19:31:20 from 66.185.237.180

Tom. I run with an Ultimate Direction SJ hydration pack that is specifically designed for ultra running. It doesn't seem to bounce at all on my back so it doesn't get bothered by it. I even wore it in my 50 mile race on Catalina Island so I don't think humidity is a factor.

I did a little warm up with a few running drills and some sprints totalling about 1 mile while waiting for Blake then we ran 6 miles on the trails. It was actually cloudy this morning with a nice cool breeze, so even though it was 93 degrees and the humidity was back up, it didn't seem too bad.  Then some core work.

I got a little crazy this morning and decided to run from my house to the top of Crossman Peak and back, something I've never done before.  I wasn't exactly sure how far it would be.  It ended up being a total of 26 miles exactly.  The climb from my house to the top was 4244 feet and took me 2 hours 50 minutes.  I was surprised how long it took me to get back down, 1 hour 57 minutes, but my legs were hammered from the climb and it was really hot...92 when I left and 98 when I finished.

Oh yeah, I came within a few feet of a rattle snake that didn't seem to happy to see me. That gave me a little adrenaline rush. I hate snakes!

I wasn't planning on running today since I am out of town with the family for Labor Day weekend and I figured it would be good to have an extra day of recovery from the 26 miles 4000+ ft climb then descent I did Friday morning.  We have been in Phoenix since Friday and we went to the BYU/UofA football game Saturday. We had a blast!

Anyways this  morning my boys wanted to go to the resort gym and workout so I went with them.  I decided to stick with not running but instead set the TM to 15% incline and 4.0 mph and walked for 3 miles while they did their thing.  Let me tell you, walking at that incline for that long is tough but I figured it was pretty good training for climbing out of the Grand Canyon.

Blake and I did a 26 mile round trip run from my house to the top of Crossman Peak which is over a 4000 foot climb and then decent.  It was only 70 degrees when we left (over 20 degrees cooler than when I did the same run 2 weeks ago.) It was way easier.  We were about 10 minutes faster on the ascent than I was 2 weeks ago, but on the descent Blake started hurting and mildly cramping so we were about 8 minutes slower on the descent than I was last time.  Anyways we both survived and I felt really good.  Grand Canyon R2R2R is 4 weeks away!

Today was the annual Lake Havasu City High School Cross Country Fundraiser 5 K.  It's always on one of the golf courses here and is a fun but difficult 5 K.  They changed the course up a bit this year so it ran a bit long at 3.2 instead of 3.1 but I liked the change.

It was a beautiful morning, about 65 degrees and no wind, and they started almost on time at a little after 7:00.  As always a small group ran out way to fast for their ability and I found myself in about 10th place about a quarter mile in.  I quickly started passing runners until I was right behind 2 other runners who were in 3rd and 4th place.  The top 2 runner I knew are really fast and there was no hope of catching them, so I determined these 2 were my competition for 3rd place.  Since I had run a tough climbing 13+ miler yesterday and my legs felt like jello during my almost 2 mile warm up, I wasn't expecting much today, but now that the race was on the adrenaline kicked in.  I stayed behind both of the runners through a little over 1 mile when the lead guy started fading and we passed him easily.  The first mile was 6:28, not too fast but a decent pace.  I then ran on the shoulder of the other guy for a while.  Our second mile was 6:31 so he ran a good consistent pace compared to the first mile.  I really wasn't working at all at this point and could tell he was starting to breath hard.  At 2.3 miles I decided to go ahead and pass him and ran by pretty easily.  I knew I would do no better than third place and was not in the mood to hurt today so I coasted the 3rd mile in 6:19 and finished the last 0.2 with a 5:54 pace even though I didn't feel like I had picked up the pace.  My finishing time was 20:33, my watch says at 5K I was 19:54.  I was 3rd overall and first in my AG. I was happy to see I was still under 20 minutes on my 5K time, even on a tough course and the day after a tough run even though I have done just long slow running for about the past 6 months with exactly zero speed work or tempo runs.

Blake just got his Boston Marathon acceptance!  The cutoff was 2 minutes 9 seconds and he was 2 minutes 30 somthing seconds.  Way to go Blake.  We are going to have a blast at your first Boston!

Today was the final long mountain climb run for Blake and I before attempting Rim to Rim to Rim 2 weeks from today.  Once again we ascended Crossman Peak from my house climbing about 4200 feet over 13 miles then ran back down.  Today's run was by far the best one we've done.  We both felt really good so it was a confidence boaster for the upcomming run.

Yasir, Rim to Rim to Rim is coming up fast...10 more days! It's about 47 miles, crossing from the south rim of the Grand Canyon to the North rim and back. It's not the distance that makes it hard but the mile deep that you have to descend and climb twice. It will make for a great adventure.

Rim to Rim to Rim- Grand Canyon (not a race, just an adventure worthy of a race report)

Our alarms went off at 4 a.m. after what felt like a really short nights sleep.  The first words out of Blake's mouth were, "That's not fair."  Fair or not, it was time to get up and get going if we were to accomplish our goal of running rim to rim to rim of the Grand Canyon.  We got ready, headed out, and were at the south rim Bright Angle Trail Head by a few minutes after 5:00.  It was cold (upper 30s) and windy but we knew it would warm up quickly as we descended the canyon so I opted for short sleeves and removable sleeves.  I also had on my trail running pack with 2 20 oz bottles filled with water and pleanty of food.  It was dark when we started so we both wore Ultraspire Lumens 600 light belts.  Those things like up the night like brighty headlights on your car.

The first few miles going down are fairly steep and technical so we weren't moving too fast but we seemed to find a nice rhythm. At one point we made the turn on one of the many switch backs and standing right in front of me on the trail were a couple big deer.  It startled me at first seeing those eyes staring at me until it registered what it was.  Some of the shadows cast on the canyon walls by our lights were pretty cool.  About 5 miles in, at Indian Gardens, the sun started coming up and casting its light in the canyon.  It is neat to see the canyon from that veiw point as the sun rises.  I removed my sleeves about that point as I was starting to work up a sweat.  We hoped to drink often and tried to eat something about every 30 minutes as well as taking electrolyte tablets every hour.  At Indian Gardens we stopped and filled our bottles to encourge ourselves to keep drinking.

With the sun now up we no longer needed our lights, at least not for now.  We continued to descend the south rim.  After passing through a little canyon with a stream running through it we began dropping quickly again.  It's crazy to look down the canyon and see all the switch backs below that you have to descend and know that you are going to have to climb back up later in the day.  Before long we were at the Colorado River.  The water flows swiftly though that section of the river.  The was a group of rafters on the shore cleaning up camp and getting ready for another day on the river.  After crossing the bridge over the river we knew Phantom Ranch was not far away.  At Phantom Ranch we stopped and refilled our bottles.  A girl who had camped there that night was asking us if we were going rim to rim in one day.  We said, "yes, and back."  She got this real perplexed looked on her face as she said, "so you are going to run rim to rim (pause as you can see it register in her mind).... to rim!  It was funny to see how crazy she thought we were.  She was probably right.

After leaving Phantom Ranch the next water stop isn't for about 7 miles.  That is the farthest space between water on the run.  It is also the flattest part of the run, but it is definitely not flat.  We ran through Box Canyon which is really neat with the steep canyon walls on both sides of the narrow canyon with a large fast flowing stream going through it.   After getting through that section we came upon a wet area with some springs coming out of the ground.  We did our best to keep our shoes dry.  At one poing we turned a corner and a spring right in the middle of the trail was shooting water out of the ground like a geyser about 20 feet high.  I have never seen that before.  We eventually made it to Cottonwood Camp not long after running out of water.  We drank up and refilled and walked through the camp a few hundred yards and then refilled the bottles again at the other end of the camp.  From there it is only a couple miles before the next water stop.  We made sure we were full again before departing that stop which is about 5 miles from the North rim...straight up!

At this poing there was a lot of power hiking and a little running.  It is so steep that even power hiking, it was taking 23 to 28 minutes per mile the rest of the way up with each mile getting steeper.  On the north rim trail the trail gets more narrow and the drop off on the edge becomes more cliff like so it is important to consentrate and stay away from the edge.  It was warming up and the sun was beating on us and we were looking forward to the final water stop which is 1.7 miles and 1400 feet elevation from the top.  We had a temporary melt down when we saw the water was out there.  We were out of water, but our only option was to keep climbing.  It was a painful 1.7 miles without water that took us about 45 minutes.  I was so happy to get to water when we reached the top.  We both drank all we could.  The elevation on the north rim is 8300 ft. so my heart was pounding as we reached the top.  It felt good to sit and relax, drink, eat, and recover for about 20 minutes.  We made it across in 6 hours 13 minutes.  Both of us can run a marathon in just over 3 hours and it was only 24 miles across.  I ran a 50 mile very hilly race in January in a few minuters under 8 hours.  The Grand Canyon is a totally different beast.

At around the 6 hour and 35 minute mark we started back.  It is so steep heading down, I'm not sure you can call what we were doing, running.  We were making good time and had a good rhythm as we descended and the temperature started rising.  Temps in the bottom of the canyon were in the 90s and the sun was beating down.  When we got back to the geyser-like spring Blake stopped and stuck his head in to cool down.  He was staring to hurt at that point but he kept pushing forward.  It wasn't long before he was in a bad spot and we still had 3 or 4 miles till we hit Phatom Ranch.  We slowed way down, but he was tough and kept running until we got there.  There is a little snack place down there were we were hoping to get a cold Coke, but all they sell is lemonade and beer, so we opted for the lemonade.  It was way sugary.  We sipped it and ate and refilled our bottles with some ice water.  Blake was a little dispondant at this point.  He had a dead look in his eyes.  I told him we had to get going and he just stared straight ahead with no acknowledgment that I even said anything.  I let him sit for a bit more.  I think we were there for about 30 minutes before I convinced him we had to go or we weren't going to get out of the canyon.  We ran a bit for the first mile when I finally had the realization that I had to change my mindset to finishing this adventure as a hike or we weren't going to get out together.  We still had about 8 uphill miles to go.  We walked and talked and enjoyed the views.  When we would cross a steam we would get our heads wet to stay cool.  The miles continued the click off and we did some math and decided we were going to make it a goal to get out under 14 hours.  We needed to keep our miles around 21 to 22 minutes and while it was not as steep the north rim it was still steep.  We stopped each place we could for water, but didn't stay long.  With a couple miles left, it was dark again and we had to turn our lights back on.  We were passing a lot of people who were hiking rim to rim from the north rim.  We would encourage them and they would encourage us.  Some of them didn't look very good.  I hope they all made it out that night.  As we made it to the final switch back we broke out into a run and ran the last 50 yards or so to make it official that it was a run. :)  We finished the 48 mile run adventure in 13 hours and 53 minutes.

I can now cross that off my list of life adventures.  I'm pretty sure I will never do it again, but it felt like a big accomplishment and I'm glad I did it and I did it with my best buddy.  It would not have been nearly as awesome without him.  I'm writing this 2 days later and to my surprise, I had no leg soreness yesterday or today although I have been very tired.

Aloha from Kauai. I'm laying here in bed thinking about going for a run, but I may just spend the day lounging at the beach like I did yesterday.

After looking out the window and checking the weather for today, it looked like it was going to be a rainy day...no good for relaxing on the beach, so we decided to go to the north side of the island and hike to this amazing waterfall. It was probably the most challenging hike I've ever done. It was slippery muddy, up and down the whole time, we had tcross through a  fast moving river about 10 to 12 times, lots of big uneven rocks in the trail most of the way, etc. It ended up being 9 miles and took us 6 hours and I don't think we could have pushed any faster without hurting ourselves. Even at that pace we both fell multiple times. The water fall at the end was amazing though so I think it was worth it...I think.

I went for a run while Doone was relaxing on the beach. It started off rough hopping from rock to rock along the shore for about a mile before I found a dirt road that ran along the coast. I ended up getting a little lost on the way back and had to cross an overgrown dense field for about a half mile and got my legs all scratched up.

Total fun 5 miles took an hour.

Enjoyed the rest of the day on the beach, snorkeling where a large seal swam near us for a while, and seeing Wimea Valley.

From Rhett on Thu, Nov 10, 2016 at 20:17:08 from 66.87.147.27

Kayaking in a nice calm river is super easy, anyone can do it. It does make your arms tired though.

From DaleG on Thu, Nov 10, 2016 at 22:30:23 from 152.216.11.5

Kayaking is fun. I have plans, big plans after I get a kayak. I'm going to take it to Antelope Island and Kayak to Fremont Island and back. Unless, of course, the water keeps drying up, then I can just run out there and back.

Slept in a bit, then spent the morning scuba diving. Saw a lot of tropical fish, a large turtle, a pretty eel, and even a small octopus which is rare during the day. Then spent the afternoon relaxing on a beautiful beach. I found a nice trail along the coast and got in a 4 mile run while Doone read.

I answered the life long question of, "Just because everyone else is jumping off a cliff, would you?"  And the answer is a definite maybe.  At the beach we were at today there is a big 25 foot cliff over the ocean that people were jumping off, so I joined in the fun.

Blake has been nursing an ankle injury and made it official this week that he is pulling out of Avalon 50.  That left me to do my last long run solo this morning, but it was a perfect day for a long run; overcast, low 50s, and no wind.  I started off well trying to keep a nice easy pace, but around mile 22 I hit a dark spot for a few miles.  I finally worked through it and did my last 4 miles with an average pace of 7:32.

Total run: 30 miles, 4hours 18 minutes, 1900 ft elevation gain and loss.

13 miles on the trails pushing a hard effort the whole time.  I haven't felt my lungs like that in a while. It felt good.  Now I better slow down a bit and get serious about my taper.

Yesterday I took a rest day to officially kick off my taper.  My legs felt really strong this morning, but I just ran an easy 6.  My watch says I have a new VO2Max of 51 this morning.  I don't know a lot about VO2Max but I think that is pretty good for a 45 year old.

I don't know VO2Max, either.

45, though, I can relate to!

10 really easy miles this morning but I wasn't really into it until the last mile when I finally started having fun.  Maybe I will take tomorrow off since I am 8 days out from Avalon 50.

Happy New Year everyone.
