I was going to go 3 but around 2.5 I could feel my calf starting to do the thing it does right before I damage it, so I stopped and walked home the last half mile.  I feel some very mild tightness in it now, but nothing like it feels when it completely strains itself.

So I ran stair intervals for 3 hours and 15 minutes this week.  I really like how I feel after running them. It is the same feeling I get after a good run.  Hopefully running the stairs will be good enough to get me ready for the marathon at least until my calf starts behaving.  My calf has felt perfect the last few days, so I will try a run again tomorrow.

I didn't plan on running that fast. I was just running what felt comfortable and it turned out that way. The good news is I finished the 10 mile run without my calf acting up.

I now have 7 weeks to train for my marathon. My cross training has obviously helped maintain my cardiovascular fitness or I wouldn't have been able to do 10 miles that fast today, but how do I get my legs ready for the 26.2 mile pounding in such a short time?

Teena, I wasn't expecting the week I had last week either. I don't know how I went from not being able to make it 2 1/2 miles the week before to doing what I did last week. My only thinking is all the stair running somehow helped, so I'm going to keep up with the stairs.

Take care of yourself with all that work.

For some reason the shoe manager is not letting me add my new shoes I tried out today.  I got a new pair of Asics DS Racers.  I wanted something light that still had some stability and a bit of a heel lift.  They seemed to work well.  I could tell I had a little more stability control with them, but the weren't as cushiony as my Sketchers and the toe box was a little smaller than I like.  Overall I give them a B.  I wish I could get my hands on another pair of Asics Tarthers, but they only sell them in Japan and Europe.

Anyways, I did 14 miles today, AP 7:35.

That was my first that far since the Phoenix Marathon last March.  My legs seemed to hold up pretty well.  I got a little worried that my calf was tightening up with a few miles to go, so I backed off the pace the last few miles.  Maybe it was just my imagination, but I figured, better safe than sorry.

Good you need to have easy days even with cross training days built into the schedule. You only have 38 more days and if you make it through healthy you'll be good to go. Don't go for speed but go for goal pace instead.

That is impressive Jeff. I'm thinking about just shooting for a 3:10 so I don't crash and burn and fail to BQ (3:15). You on the other hand should have no problem with the sub 3 this time around. You have had a great training cycle. I am starting to peak at the right time, but I just don't think I have been able to get in enough miles.

I was up at 4 am to get in a 20 miler before being at work at 8:00.  It was an amazing morning: 58 degrees, no wind at all, clear skies, and a full moon blazing that allowed you to see forever.  I ran along the lake and it was beautiful to see the refleciton of the moon and the silloute of the mountains behind.

Anyways, to the run. I started with about 3 downhill miles, then the middle 14 miles were very mild rollers (almost flat), then back up the 3 miles to finish. I averaged 7:25 and the best part is, I had a full minute negative split on the run and even ran the last 3 uphill miles faster than I ran the first 3 down hill miles.

Considering 6 weeks ago, I failed to run 3 miles because of a calf injury and had not done any real running for the 6 weeks before that, I have come a long ways.  I don't think I have put in enough miles to shoot for a sub 3 in 2 weeks, but I'm feeling confident in my chances to run at least a 3:15 which I need to BQ.

Today was my final hard run before starting my serious 10 day taper. My plan called for 10 miles at goal marathon pace. I decided to go with my best case senario mp which would put me at a 3 hour marathon.

TM

1 mile warm up 8:00

10 miles 6:50

How did it go?  Well, after 7 miles at "mp" I was working way too hard so I took a quarter mile walk break to get my HR back down and then finished the last 3 miles at "mp."

What did I learn? There is no way I should be shooting for a 3 hour marathon right now.  I think a 7:05 to 7:10 pace will be the smart pace for race day at least through about 20 miles and then see how I'm feeling. That will get me to the finish somewhere around 3:05 if I can maintain that pace.

It's all tapering from here on out!

Phoenix Marathon

Things definitely did not go as planned in the preparation for this marathon.  I was unable to run for 6 weeks in the middle of my 16 week training program becuase of a calf issure, but was healthy for the final 8 weeks.  Then I came down with a head cold 5 days before the race that seemed to zap a lot of my energy. That being said, I felt very blessed to be able to be in as good of shape as I was to start the race.

Friday night I had a pre-race dinner at Black Bear Diner with Blake and his family, and Jeff and his family and a couple other friends.    Blake, Jeff, and I all had pancakes for our pre-race carb loading.  They were good and the company was even better.  Blake and I went back to the hotel and got our things ready for the race and checked the weather which said it would rain all night and all the next day and that we would have 10 to 20 mph head winds. Yuck!

After a surprisingly good night's sleep we awoke to dry weather but strong winds.  We took the long bus ride up to the start and found Jeff and mentally prepared.  The flags were wipping in the wrong direction but it was still dry out.  After the national anthem accompanied with some firework,s we headed to the starting line.  A few minutes before the start it started raining hard.  It was about 60 degrees out so it felt good. The cool thing is, the wind stopped blowing when the rain came.

I had been debating what pace to run, and since I had a cold and was not feeling 100%, I decided to go with the 3:10 pace group. It ended up being the right decision.  By the end of the first mile the rain had stopped and it was pretty calm out. Only a few times during the race did I feel like I was running into a head wind and I just tucked in behind our pacer at those time.

The first half of the race has most of the down hill in the race and the only serious up hill.  The whole race only has about an 800 foot drop the second half is pretty much flat.  At the half way mar,k I knew I was going to have to work to keep that pace up the rest of the race, but I felt like I could.  I hit the halfway mark at 1:34:22 (7:12 pace), perfect for a 3:10 marathon.

The next 7 miles I tried to just keep things steady and did a good job.  From the half to mile 20, my average pace was 7:14, but I was starting to feel it during that 20th mile and knew I was going to have to dig deep.  Over the next few miles I started to fade a bit and miles 23 and 24 were my only miles over 8 minutes.  I averaged 7:52 over the last 10k, but finihed strong over the last couple miles.  I even ran the last 0.4 with a 6:40 pace.  I'm pretty confident this course is about a quarter mile long as everyone's watches registered about 26.45, just like last year and I know I ran the tagents.

Anyways I finished with a 3:13:05 (7:22 pace) which gave me a BQ by 1:55.  I'm not sure if I will register for Boston, and if I do, it may not be fast enough to get me in anyways, but it sure feels good to be back into the BQ club.

Congratulations to Jeff who entered the sub 3 club with well earned 2:59:56 and to Blake who set a 6 minute PR.

This is a very well organized event, and except for the course being a bit long, I would I wouldn't change a thing about it.  I highly recommend it to anyone looking for winter marathon.  It is February 28th next year and I'm pretty sure I will be back for my 3rd shot at this race.

Another long day of classes. Then I drove over to the Tramway Road which is a very steep road and ran up 2 miles and then back down. My 2 uphill miles where around 10:30 pace and the 2 back down were around 6:15. Honestly, the uphill miles felt much more comfortable. It was so steep on the way down that it was hard to control my speed and my toes jammed into the front of my shoes and it hurt pretty good.

Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesCrosstraining milesTotal Miles
0.000.000.000.000.000.00

Today was the Bucket List Triathlon right here in Lake Havasu City, so my buddy and I decided to do it.  There was an option for a sprint (800 m swim, 20 k bike, 5 k run) or a super sprint (200 m swim, 4 mile bike, 1 mile run).  Blake and signed up for the sprint.  Cade, my 9 year old son, decided he wanted to do the super sprint at the last moment also.

It was fun to watch Cade start his race and complete his swim.  200 m was farther than I think he thought it was going to be, but he finished and started off on his bike right before our race started. Blake and I got in the water and our race began.  The swim was rather uneventful, but it was definitely farther than 800 m, I'm thinking about 1200m.  I transitioned to the bike with a small struggle to get off my wet suit.  Blake was coming in right as I was heading out on the bike.  It was a loope race so I was passing people, but couldn't tell if they were ahead of me or behind me.  No one passed me on the bike though.  I made a quick transition to the run.Blake was right there as I was heading out. I began the run and my right calf felt tight.  I figured it would loosen up, but as I got less than half mile away my calf muscle did that thing it was doing at the end of the year.  It is a sudden pain and stops me in my tracks.  I stopped and decided to walk back.  :(

So anyways I had to take a DNF.  Blake eneded up finishing 6th overall and 2nd in his AG.  I figure I would have been 3rd or 4th overall if not for the injury.

Cade finished, got 2nd in his AG, and had a blast.

Burt, yep it's no fun to report an injury.

Smooth, yep even with the injue it was a lot of fun, especially watching Cade. Best wishes to you and Larry.

1st I did a 20 mile bike ride with Blake and Chic joined us too.

Then I went with Cade to his mini golf tounament to end his week of golf classes.

Then we went to the lake with and rode jet skis for a bit.

I unfortunately had to go to work, so I said good bye and left everyone else to play. :(

From Rhett on Wed, Aug 06, 2014 at 10:05:14 from 24.121.0.8

Well Teena, I would be lying if I said I have already done it. I was just proclaiming that I was going to do it starting Monday, and so far so good. In July I pretty much hit my rock bottom as far as fitness and health goes, so I decided once school started I would change my ways. And I found that I really was ready to be focused again by the time that day came. So, hopefully I will maintain it at least though next February when I'll be running my next marathon.

How do you change flats so stinkin' quickly???

It's amazing what we feel when we try the things that used to come so easily to us as we age!!

I tried to do a back walk over the other day and seriously almost killed myself! It was SO SO SO not good!!!!! The kids and Ry got a good kick out of me looking like a complete fool though! I'm telling you, I wasn't even close!!! (And I honestly thought I was going to be able to do it!)

From Rhett on Thu, Aug 07, 2014 at 09:52:09 from 24.121.0.8

Smooth, thanks. I like the positive spin on my flat tires. :)

Tim, yep I figure anyone who has cycled enough has had a ride like that before.

Jeff, I'm glad I'm not the only one with bike tire issues. Mine was the front tire both times. I agree, back tires a way worse.

Blake, not flats is my new motto. Unfortunately I seem to get way too many.

Teena, unfortunately as I posted to Blake I get a lot of flats so I've gotten good at changing them. It used to take me much longer. And, yes we're getting older, but we can still do everything we used to be able to do though, right? :) Next time you try that back walk over have someone shoot some video of it so we can all enjoy.

On my way home from seminary I was eyeing a storm coming in.  Since it never rains here, I figured I would be fine heading out on my morning bike ride. I went in, changed, got the bike out and all geared up, and then took one more look at the clouds and realized that I probably ought not go out on my ride. I put everything away and headed to the gym and rode the stationary bike for on hour.  Will there a seriousy thounder, lightning and rain storm hit. Glad I thought twice and took my ride inside.

Nice swim. Where did you swim to? I used my Nike Free shoes yesterday and they felt really good. You do need to get the shoes because they seem to be much more comfortable than the original Go Runs with much more cushioning.

38 mile bike ride (2 hours 1 minute) followed by a 2 mile easy run in some new shoes Blake picked up for me. I wore the Sketchers Sonics this morning and really liked them. They are a nice improvement from the Sketchers Go Run that were a little sloppy on the feet. These seem a little more responsive while maintaining a large toe box, but are still way cushy and seemed to have a bit more heal lift. I could see myself running a marathon in them.

He also picked me up a pair Sketchers Ultras which look way big with a huge cushy sole, but only way 9.1 ounces.  I'll try those out tomorrow.

I just started running in the Sketcher's Go Runs (since Sophia convinced me). I actually LOVE them! I ran a 20 miler in them today without incident. I will see how my legs feel tomorrow though since they really are light with little support.

Maybe I will go check out the Sonics. I saw an ad for them recently and they look awesome! :-) Sophia also likes the Go Rides. Hmmm ...

From Rhett on Sat, Aug 23, 2014 at 15:29:13 from 199.117.154.54

Teena, I'm a big fan of the Sketcher running shoes. I have liked all the different ones I have tried. I wore the Ultras today for the first time. I have never had that much cushion in a shoe before. It felt weird at first, but as I got going I liked it and they are still really light. I do like the Sonics better though. They have some decent arch support and fit more like a racing flat, which I like.

I remember the high school cross country course being on the island and it was in a figure 8 shape. It was funny because if you didn't know better, you thought you were coming into the finish line, so you would start your kick only to find out that you still had a mile to go.

I've been riding a lot this summer, hoping some of the fitness will carry over to running. Good luck with the half IM - I have quite a few friends doing fulls in Chattanooga in less than two weeks. Easy MilesMarathon Pace MilesThreshold MilesVO2 Max MilesCrosstraining milesTotal Miles

Today was the annual Lake Havasu High School cross country fund raiser which they do right before one of their races.  It's at one of the local golf courses. It's fun to run on the grass, but makes the race more challanging than a normal 5k on the roads. There are lots of ups and downs and turns and a few places you have to run through some sand.  I'd bet most people are about a minute slower on this course than they would be on a typical road course.

After warming up for a little less than 2 miles, the race started after getting off the line and settling in I was in 10th place. I slowly moved up and by the end of the first mile was in 6th place.  It was a two lap course. At the end of the first lap there was a sharp up and down and on the down, I few into 5th.  I kept pushing and very slowly caught up to  the guy in 4th right about at two miles. I stayed behind him for a few paces to gather myself and then went past him with a burst of speed so he wouldn't go with me. It worked and he dropped off me quickly.  I never got close to the third place guy, but just pushed myself as hard as my body would let.  I finished comfortably in 4th place with no one close behind.  Even though I got 4th overall, I was 3rd in the 40-45 age group. What's up with that?

Splits: 6:05, 6:28, 6:30, not sure about the last 0.1

Overall: 20:21

Considering I've done no speed or tempo work since last winter, I'm satisfied with my race.

46.4 mile bike ride with Blake on a hot, humid, windy mornig that felt like 56.4 miles.  I'm going to need a couple hours to recover from that ride.

The weather has been in the low to mid 70s in the morning all week and this morning I woke up for early morning seminary and it was already 87. I think this is the last of the hot for the summer though. It's supposed to storm tonight and significantly drop the temps...hopefully for good.

First I cycled 25.4 miles with an avg speed of 20.2 mph

Then I did a hilly 10 mile run through SARA Park with avg pace of 8:11

I'm not exactly sure what has gotten into me on the bike this week, but I am definitely riding faster this week. I guess all the miles on the bike are starting to pay off.

My run started off well, but during the seventh mile I could feel the lack of carbs kick in. I had to push hard to keep a respectable pace on the last few miles. I guess that is what I deserve for doing the workout with just water and no carbs.

HITS Half Ironman in Lake Havasu City

I've been training with my good buddy Blake for this race since we ran the Phoenix Marathon last march.  Last year we did our first half ironman and it was tough.  I learned that I really needed to to work on my cycling if I wanted to be a good triathlete.

I felt 100% healthy and ready to go for this race. This is the first time since 2010 I have felt this good.  I didn't feel nervous the days leading up to the race but I didn't sleep hardly at all the night before the race, so my nerves must have been getting the best of me.  I finally gave up to the tossing and turning and got out of bed at 4 am.  I had some toast with PB&J, watched some Sports Center and headed over to the race.  I got all my stuff ready in the transision area and just relaxed and talked with some friends.  Finally it was time to put on the wetsuits and head down to the water. The sun was just barely coming up and the lake looked beautiful.  There was no wind, so the water was glassy.  Once again my nerves manifested as I was shaking a bit, but was not cold.

Mercifully the race finally started. It was a beach start with all racers (male and female, half and full) starting at the same time, so there were a few hundred people all charging into the water and taking off. I was able to get off to the side of everyone and avoid most of the mealay. I didn't even get kicked in the head once!  The water felt great and I really enjoyed the swim. It has become my favorite part of the triathlon.  I was a bit sad when the swim finished, knowing I was about to embarke on a long bike ride.

1.2 MILE SWIM- 30:36

Into the transision area I went.  I've been working on getting my wetsuit off faster and it paid off as I was one of the fastes through Transition 1.

TRANSITION 1- 2:48

When switching from the swim to the bike I always feel it in my glutes for about the first 5 miles, and today was no different.  I settled into a good pace along with a few others that were about my equal. There is no drafting in triathloning, but you can be 3 bike lenghts back of the person infront of you and it seemed to help each of us keep up the pace as we continually leap frogged each other.  Fortunately the bike was uneventful and eventually came to an end.

56 MILE BIKE- 2:48:09

Transition 2 went very smoothly.  I took a few extra seconds to double knot my shoes and headed out for the run.

TRANSITION 2- 1:06

Finally to the run and I was feeling pretty good... so I thought.  I was trying to run slow and easy, but the first 3 miles were in the 7:30s.  I knew this was too fast, but it felt so easy, I just kept going.  Then I slowly started to fade as the work of the bike started to catch up with me.  By the turn around at 6.55 I was spent.  My miles were in the high 9s by then and I was just focusing on moving one foot in front of the other.  Mile 11 took everything I had to keep running, so when I told myself I could walk when I finished that mile. I was in a campground at that point walking on a road along the lake.  Some campers asked if I wanted some ice water, I asked if they had a cold Coke and the dug one out of their ice chest and gave it to me.  I popped it open and it was like heaven in a can.  I continued walking along the lake road drinking my Coke until I hit mile 11.5 when I finally felt like I could run again.  I took it slow at first and eventually passed the one person who had passed me while I walked that half mile. Right as I hit mile 12 a lady running at a good clip passed me and I realized I was starting to feel pretty good again so I went with her.  I followed her for abut 3/4 of a mile when I decided I had enough in the tank to run hard to the end.  I passed her up and finished the strong running the last mile around 8 minutes.

13.1 MILE RUN- 2:02:19

My FINAL FINISHING TIME was 5:25:01 which was a 55 minute PR over my only other half IM! I was really happy with that, but disappointed that my run time was identical to my first half IM.  I obviously need to figure out how to run after putting in a hard biking effort.  This year I mostly focused on improving my cycling and that is where I made up most of the 55 minutes. Next year to work on putting it all together and finishing with a good run.

OVERALL PLACE- 16

AGE GROUP PLACE- 3rd, so I got a nice little plaque for my efforts.

Fridays are nice to get the long run done and then get to run easy on Saturday.

I get up early every day to be at the church by 5:30 for seminary. I have started going in to work at 10:30 on Fridays, so I have plenty of time between seminary and work to get in a long run.

HAVASU TURKEY TROT 5K

It was a perfect morning for a 5k, 50 degrees, no wind, and clear skies.  Cade (10 y.o.) decided to join me this morning.  After getting our race bibs, I took off for a warm up with Jim.  We ran around a mile.  I threw in a couple strides.

We lined up and after a few glitches with the timing clock and starting gun, the race was finally under way.  About 10 people flew off the line like they were doing a 400 m sprint. I let them go, knowing I would pass most of them soon.  Sure enough within a quarter mile I was in 4th place.  I knew I would never come close to Dan who is in my AG, but out of my league, but I had my sights set on the other two whom I did not know.  I hit mile 1 in 5:54 and was about 150 yards behind the 2nd and 3rd runner.  I could tell I was starting to gain on them a bit. Right as we hit mile 2, 5:57,  I caught the 3rd place guy and passed him rather qucikly.  The second place guy was about 100 yards ahead at this point.  I was focusing on him and trying to real him in slowly.  As we were nearing the end of the 3rd mile he peeked over his shoulder and saw that I was about 50 yards behind him, and he kicked it up a notch.  Third mile 5:54.  I was giving it everything I had on the last 0.1 but it was not quite enought to catch 2nd, so I ended finishing 3rd overall and 2nd in my AG, BUT WITH A 27 SECOND PR!  18:23

Once again I have proven my theory that triathlon training makes you a faster runner.

Cade set a PR also today running 26:13 and getting second in his AG.  He missed first by only 2 seconds.

This morning it feels a lot better, but still not ready to run on. It was too dark to bike outside, so I broke out the bike trainer and cylcled for about 20 minutes, then jumped rope for 10 minutes, then another 20 on the bike, followed by 10 more with the jump rope.

There was a nice misty rain going this morning making me want to get out and run, so I laced up the shoes and headed out to see how the hammy would hold up. I started nice and easy and while I could tell I would not be able to run fast, it wasn't really bothering me...until about halfway through the 3rd mile I started to get a little pain so I immediately stopped running and walked in the last mile and a half.

I guess I am mildly dissapointed, but I don't think I caused any damage.  I'll just have to wait a few more days and hopefully be running 100% next week.

I started out jumping rope this morning as I waited for the sun to come up.  While jumping rope my shoe came untied. As I bent over to tie it, my gimpy hamstrig full on popped. OUCH! I was mad, so I jumped rope as fast an hard as I could to get my anger out.  After finishing 30 minutes I had worked out my anger... mostly, and went for a 10 mile bike ride.

During the ride my chain popped off and I had to put it back on.  Once again if felt frustration, but tried to work through it. As I arrived home I remembered that I had low pressure in one of my truck tires, so I parked my bike leaning up on the opening of the garage door so it would be out the way as I filled my tires with air.  I started filling the tires and the compressor made a weird noise. Next thing I knew it was smoking and shut down.  Guess I burned it out... more inner turmoil.  I disgustedly put the compressor away and headed inside pushing the garage door button on the way in to shut the garage door.  Heading to the kitchen I remembered my bike was propped up under the door. I turned back, opened the door and pressed the garage door button right before the garage door came crushing down on my bike... wheh, dodged a bullet.  I had grabbed the door frame as I swung out to press the button and slam! The door is on a spring hing, my hand had just been crushed in the door.  That pain made my hamstring pain seem like nothing. It is swollen and hurts still. I hope I didn't break anything in it.  This time though, I didn't really get mad, I just thought that at least my day couldn't get much worse. It's only 9 am. I hope everthing else today goes much smoother.

I won't mention names, but Doone and I were asked to talk in church Sunday. (Blake you know who you are.) Anyways, I usually prepare talks by going on a nice long run. Since I can't run (stupid hammy) I figured I'd go on a nice long bike ride and it seemed to work just as well as a long run.  For some reason I'm able to write talks in my head way better when I'm outside running or biking than when I'm just sitting infront of a computer or piece of paper.

I saw some ladies running the stairs at the London Bridge when I was riding and the thought came to me that I should see if my hammy will let me run stairs.  I'll have to give that a try soon.

I had never counted before.  Then I jumped rope for 5 minutes followed by 5 minutes of bounding and high skipping. Through all of that I felt no pain or even tightness in my hammy, so I did 5 x 1/2 mile easy running with 5 minutes of jumping rope in between.  I then finished with 1 easy mile running.

Unfortunately the last couple miles, my inner hammy tightened up pretty good.  It is wild how much abuse that part of the hammy is taking since I popped the other part of the hammy.  I hope it gets used to it soon, becasue I am tired of not being able to run very far before it gets overworked and the rest of my body is still warming up.

I stuck to the bike this morning in efforts to keep strengthening my hammy.

8 miles, no hamstring problems!

1 mile easy then 1 mile at tempo effort...repeated 3 times.  Then 2 mile easy cool down.

Thanks Mack, I hope you and your family had a merry Christmas. Good to hear from you.

Burt, my hammy seems to be 100%. I couldn't ask for a better Christmas present.

20 easy miles with Blake. It was a long way to run coming off my hamstring issue, but we took it easy and I had no problems.  I did get tired on the last few miles which is understandable since I haven't gone more than 10 miles in a few months and haven't run much at all in the last four weeks.  It was great to get out with Blake on a run again.

My legs felt really good this morning especially considering my long run yesterday.  Blake and I did a 16 mile bike ride, then we ran an easy 4 miles, then I rode home  about 2 more miles.

On my run my right IT band tightened up a bit but nothing too bad. Other than that I felt good.

I've had a bit of a chest cold the last few days and was feeling a bit sluggish this morning, but still mananged to get in a decent run, although I now feel realy tired.

1 mile easy followed by 1 mile at tempo effort- repeat 4 times, then 2 mile cool down.

Total run- 10 miles

Well, I hope that run didn't push the chest cold further into your lungs. Nice 10 miles, though.

It is actually snowing in Lake Havasu City. I never thought I would see the day.  Way too cold and windy to get out and run this morning.  Maybe I'll do something this afternoon.
