Well, I hit 1,000 miles for 2016. The foot surgery really cut into my running. Not sure what I'll do this year. Neither of my feet feel like they can take a lot of running at this time.

I don't really have any running plans or goals at this time so far now I'm just going to try and maintain some conditioning until I decide what's next.

Well...my foot, that I have had operated on twice, suddenly started getting very sharp pains in it for no reason. This happened all of a sudden this weekwnd.

I called rhe foot doctor and luckily got an appointment for today. After a little questioning and a fee ex rays, the doctor discovered that there is a strand of metal wire, left from the first surgery, still in my foot....So, next Thursday I go in for another surgery to have it removed..... Ahhhhhhg...!!!!!

A wire left in your foot! so they forgot to clean up after they finished the job. The story of my life at work. sorry you have to go through this sir. Keep us updated.

From Tom K on Wed, Jan 18, 2017 at 10:41:31 from 66.87.122.24

Aw man, that stinks! You were putting up some pretty good numbers before this news. I hope you have a quick recovery. Good luck, IJR!

From I Just Run on Wed, Jan 18, 2017 at 10:47:31 from 107.77.72.53

This should be a quick recovery. Hopefully bsck running after a couple of weeks!

From Russ on Wed, Jan 18, 2017 at 13:41:24 from 74.114.3.253

From Dan on Wed, Jan 18, 2017 at 21:02:20 from 71.72.159.140

A strand of wire!? That seems like a weird thing to miss! Just think of how much you ran with that in there - crazy

From Rhett on Sat, Jan 21, 2017 at 21:41:29 from 66.87.64.119

Yikes. I hope the removal goes smoothly and you are back to running pain free soon.

Got the wire taken out of my foot today. The doctor (#1) says he thinks its a sliver of drill bit left over from doctor #1's operation. Doctor #1 did say he broke a drill bit off in my foot. Bottom line is, doctor #1 really botched the while thing and, l believe, caused me two years of pain, lost time and misery! Hopefully it's all over now and l can get back to running pain free.

Right now l don't have any running goals, I'm really focused on my team roping. My one goal that may pop up is Boston again if my daughter can qualify in April. I am already qualified so I don't plan on running any more marathons this spring.

My next goal may be 3:10 next spring but with my setbacks and age I'm not so sure that is possible .

Sorry about all of the issues with your foot. I think being able to run Boston with your kid might be the coolest thing ever. Since you're not running right now, you should totally use this opportunity to coach your daughter to BQ. Like, go be super annoying with it. Make that happen.

Wowzers, that's no fun. Glad it's out and you're ready to rope then run.

Nurse: "Doctor, where's the rest of the drill bit you broke off in his toe?"

Doctor: "I'm not sure, but it probably is on the floor over there (pointing to some random location with the drill in hand). I'm sure it will turn up."

Here's my first run in about 3 months. Came out to California to visit Callie, my daughter. She is training for the Revel Mt. Charlston Marathon in 3 weeks. I wanted to run with her, even though I haven't run at all in 3 months. I decided to do 2 miles with her and then as we ran changed my mind and went ahead and ran 5. I was surprised I made it 2 miles much less 5 miles. Not sure yet how much I will be running in the near future but will be going on an RV vacation with Callie, her husband Matt, Kirby, our son and his girlfriend and obviously Sarah, my wife in 6 weeks. I would like to be able to run some more with Callie during that vacation but know I need to run some before then to make it fun and not kill me. Callie is trying to qualify for Boston so we can run it in 2018 together. I qualified at the San Antonio R&R back in December. Looking forward to that if it happens!

My heart rate was UGLY hight on this run.

Great job! I hope you and Callie both get to do Boston 2018. My running buddy used Revel Mt Charleston to BQ last year. It is a super fast course. He had like a 20 minute PR.

From Tom Slick on Mon, Apr 10, 2017 at 17:05:25 from 174.148.140.162

Good to hear from you, glad your getting back into the game! IJR - Even though I just barely made the time for a BQ (6 seconds) I will be going to the 2018 Boston Marathon. I was recognized by the BAA a few years back as having run the Boston 10 times or more and all I have to do is get a BQ time and I'm in!!!!

Just get back into your training and the heart rate will settle down.So 2018 will be your 2nd Boston Marathon?

Impressive run after a long layoff! How's the foot?

From I Just Run on Wed, Apr 12, 2017 at 10:40:17 from 107.77.64.119

Rhett, it makes me want to run it just to get a big PR. Maybe l could break 3:00 in that marathon. 😁

Tim, that is really good to hear. I was worried you hadn't made it in. Hopefully I'll see you there in 2018.

Yasir, Callie actually gets her genes from her great grandfather, on the other side of the family. He was a 2 time Olympic Gold Medalist!!!

Russ, the foot is always uncomfortable but not much pain. I was hoping that taking the metal wire out would take that away. I guess its as good as it will ever get now.

From Dan on Thu, Apr 13, 2017 at 19:12:20 from 71.72.159.140

Hi Guys,

Sorry I haven't been on the Blog or responded to all your post. Life has been great but very busy lately. We sold our business about 3 years ago, my last day of work was last August. Since then I have found a great part time business that has been bringing in enough money to not go and find a full time job and is growing rapidly. It has allowed us to travel and spend a lot of time doing the things we want to do. I've been working on my roping very hard, practicing almost every day, and building the new business. I plan to get consistent with running soon and run a couple of races this wall and winter. Dan and Tom, I would love to show you the business I'm excited about. May or may not be something for you but it has sure changed my life. :-) Call or text me: 512-757-0063.

Okay, starting to see slight improvement. Hoping for some cooler weather in the next few weeks. Today was the first day below 70 (68) which helped. My foot that was operated on is always uncomfortable but tolerable. I am entered in the Chosen Half Marathon on November 18 so only 6-1/2 weeks to get ready. I'm sure it won't be my best or fastest race by what the heck, I only have to beat a bunch of OLD guys!

Hopefully I'll pull about 30 more seconds per mile off the type training run in the next month and then I should be able to run a decent Half Marathon. My endurance is still low so I need to build that up too.

Rhett,

Getting better. I always feel like I've accomplished a milestone when I hit the 10 mile run mark in training and also the less than 8m avg. It usually escalates from there.

Tried to do a long (12 mile) progressive run. Wasn't sure where to start (what pace). With the hills I have it seemed to trun out pretty good based on the progression of my HR. I tried to drop 2-3 seconds off of the total average time each mile. This was accomplished pretty well. I set the run up so I could do 14 in this same progression but I wasn't feeling it at 12 so I stopped and ran the last 4.65 home at a slow cool-down pace. I was hoping for some miraculous power that would show me I'm ready for a strong Half but it wasn't there. :-(

Rhett, My HR, compared to similar runs last year and other past years, seems to be good but the effort seems to be much more. Not sure if this is just age catching up with me, lack of conditioning or if it's all in my head? Very curious what race day effort will be.

I don't recall any specific time allotted for a 1/2 marathon taper but personally I think you need to kinda take it easy this week, cause you don't want to blow up a lot of great training by over doing it and or having some sort of mishaps......Ya know! Good luck Saturday....

IJR - Be careful adding additional training so close to the race, especially speed and hill training! BNut know that you are where you are be sure that you get a really good stretching and warm-up secession in before the race. I'd make sure I used "The Stick" on those legs before the race too.....

Thanks Tom & Tom,

Yes...the feet, those are always a sore subject. The right one, that was operated on twice, is always uncomfortable. It has a lump in the middle ball and my second toe doesn't bend. My left has the same uncomfortable pain that rhe right one originally had. It may eventually break too, but in the meantime I Just Run!

Good advice on the race prep. I think the weather will be in the high 60's- low 70's so not great for a PR attempt. I do want to run fast enough to beat those other OLD guys!!!

Tough race day for me. We missed good weather by 1 day. A cool front is blowing in this afternoon and will drop the temperature about 30 degrees. It was a hot and muggy 71 degrees/67 dewpoint and a 10-15 mph wind to start and 78 degrees/67 dewpoint and a strong 10-15 mph head wind at the end of the race.

My original hope was to run a 1:34 but after mile 3 I knew that wasn't going to happen. I started back in the pace a ways as I always like to do and kept mile 1 fairly easy as planned and indicated by my HR. But into mile 2 I has already started to sweat profusely and pretty much know my 1:34 was going to be out of the question. Miles 3,4,5 all came in at exactly 7:36 with me trying just to keep a consistant pace. I was suprised they were all the same as this is not a flat course. At mile 6 I walked a little talking to another runner and assessing what my goal from this point on should be. I decided, at this point, that I had better really listen to my body and not do anything stupid and bonk. From my HR I knew I was running on the edge. Back to 7:35 for mile 7, 7:36 mile 8, 7:39 mile 9 and then the dreaded mile climb on mile 10 at 8:17. Again back to 7:36 on mile 11 and some more uphill on mile 12 and a 7:45. Last year I was increasing my pace nicely after 10 but I just couldn't do it this year. Mile 13 is mostly a gradual down hill and I hit that at 7:04 but was dissipointed I couldn't break into 6 at this point. Lots of runners were overheating, I could see that coming with many that I passed. I would talk to them for a bit and tell them they were doing great but as usual they would try to hang with me for a while and I would hear them begin to labor and I knew at that point they were going to bonk. (I talked to three of them after the race and confirmed my belief.)  I wish I could calculate the equlivant effort to a better weather condition because I really thought 1:33 - 1:34 was not out of the question.

I ended up 10th overall, the best I've ever done in this race of about 1,000-1,200 but didn't feel like I did that great. 1st in my age division. I talked to the old guy that won 2nd in my age division and I think he though he had me beat but he didn't realise I has started in the middle of the pack and came and caught him! :-)

Hopefully this will be a springboard to good marathon training in the next few weeks but it really didn't build my confidence. This was my 3rd slowest Half Marathon.

149 HR Average and only 4 seconds per mile different from my Half Marathon last Saturday .... WOW what a difference good weather makes. (55 Degrees, 30% Humidity, Dew Point 30)

This was basically an easy run for me except for the last 4 miles where I kicked it up to a consertively hard effort, even hitting a 6 on the last mile.

I'm not overly excited about training right now and have had to drag myself out lately but I guess I should set a goal marathon and get a little more serious about this.

Hey Preston, I have failed to see where you have added anything in your Upcoming Races sections?

From I Just Run on Wed, Nov 29, 2017 at 06:42:16 from 199.38.187.9

Tom S,

That's a good question. I am waiting to see what Callie, my daughter, does at the CIM Marathon this weekend. She is trying to qualify for Boston. Depending what she does will depend on what I do next. Possibly pick a local marathon to qualify myself or target a marathon she and I can both run and try and both try and qualify together.

From Tom Slick on Wed, Nov 29, 2017 at 09:05:00 from 174.148.251.29

I didn't realize CIM was this weekend? Tell your daughter best of luck from me! Has she done this marathon before? I did CIM last year ('16) and really liked this marathon. Tell her to pick her BQ time and jump in that pace group and enjoy the ride to the finish line. CIM's pacers are really good!

Thanks Tom, Ill give her that advice. I got burned twice by pacers but I tend to run my marathons a little different than a consistent steady pace. She is more of a steady pace runner so it should be good for her.

Wow...wow...wow...Today's run wS a bust! Planned a long run. St arted out not feeling good and it just got worse. Trid to run at about 8:30-8:45 pace and did so for 14 miles then the wheels fell off. I began to feel horrible light headed, feeling dehydrated, hungry and just plain miserable. I wasn't sure I was even going to make it back home the last 2 miles. I jogged, walked and rested several times. I can only remember one other time I felt this bad on a run.

Callie did very well on her CIM, cutting 5 minutes and 43 seconds off her Revel Mt Charlton marathon time. Even better she cut 31 minutes and 24 seconds from her mary in NYC. Good luck to both of you and I hope to see ya both in The Boston 2019!!!!!

I'm glad one of us is still running around here! YOur weather sounds typical for our winters. We specialize in low 40's with rain.

Any races coming up? I see your daughter graduated and got married. Congrats!

I'm just too busy to run as much as I'd like, plus my knee that I hurt a few years ago has never gotten fully better. Still try to get in 3-4 days a week.

From I Just Run on Fri, Dec 08, 2017 at 07:29:11 from 199.38.187.9

Wow...Good to hear from you DL! Hope you're doing good. Our weather is crazy right now. 80 degrees a couple of days ago, then 40 and rain and now 3-4 inches of snow on the ground last night.

I'm thinking about running either the Ft Worth Cowtown or the Woodlands marathons. Trying to stay Boston qualified so Callie and I can run it together when she qualifies.

I'm sorry about your knee as I know you love to run! You may already know about my two bike wrecks and two foot operations. They really held me back for a lot of the last couple of years. I'm back but not as strong mentally or physically.

Wish you were still blogging! :-)

Sounds like global warming has fallen all over you and yours, grin and bear it and wait 15 minutes cause it will change.

Keep Callie training, she only needs to drop 3:15 to get that “BQ” , plus 10 minutes . She was so close at CIM!!! I want to see both of you at the 2019 Boston!!!

Injuries sustained in life and running happen, all you can do is get into the best shape and condition as possible and maintain it forever!!! And that’s what I think...😜

Running my normal 10 mile route this morning and a big bulldog runs out from a house chasing me. I scream at him but he keeps coming! I try to dodge him but he jumps, catches and bites me on my thigh through my tights bringing blood. I turn, punch and kick at him and he finally backs off growling but I finally get away!

What should I do? (I have a gun and I'm not afraid to use it!)

First go and get medical attention, get it cleaned and the punctures and torn flesh sutured, get shots for infection, etc. Call animal control to take this animal off the streets, call the police and get a full report on the incidence. Take lots of photos of your injuries and document the event in writing. If you can locate any witnesses to the event, get them on record, print and photo! Then file a suit against the animals owner against their homeowners insurance.

As much as you and I would like to shoot these vicious dogs, do not shoot the beast...let animal control or the police do that!

Took a day off yesterday since my back was so sore, but it's a little better today so I forced myself to do the long run. As I warmed up the back loosened up. Missed my 10 mile run last week so was a little behind on total miles. This run was fair but on the scale an 8 when it should be a 6. Got to get my confindence up for these longer runs. Funny how it seems so impossible to run 26 at even a faster pace while in training at this point. :-)

62-67 degrees? I doubt it’s even that warm inside. Actually, not, as we keep our house at 66 in the winter. Sheesh. I think I need to move South. Great run Preston! Funny how the confidence leaves then comes back after a run like this, and the marathon reinforces in our head we can do ridiculous things. I’m jealous of your weight loss. I’m hoping for some, but not seeing anything yet. If I get the miles up, the weight should come down. Merry Christmas!

Happy New Year! Yes, I'm laughing at you and your "cold" 32 degree windchill. I normally kill for finding that sort of warmth this time of year. But I've also realized that because the cold is part of my life, I continue to buy the gear I need to run all year and stay warm. And you, my friend, don't have that need, so I fully appreciate you were both freezing your tails off. Great job getting it done!

Happy New Year to you guys too! Thanks for all the encouragement over the last year. You're one of the big reasons I keep running.

The only race plans I have this year is either the Cowtown Marathon Ft Worth or The Woodlands outside Houston. Going for another BQ. Besides that I don't have any as I'm not in shape or mind frame to shoot for a PR at any distance and that seems to be what motivates me.

As far as the weather goes, I think I'm actually liking this cold weather better than the hot. If I can keep my hands and feet warm I seem to run and feel much better. Just hard to take the first step out the door! :-)
