You're an animal when it comes to running.... What's wrong with 26 degrees and running outside? Slick gets up at 3:30 am does that in his sleep and he's old as dirt.

What a great day to run! 44 degrees, no wind and low DP and humidity.

Tryed to do somewhat of a progressive run but it's hard because of the hills. I thought it was a good run but compared to some a few weeks ago...not so great.

Perfect temps! You're only a month past the PR marathon, so your times are stellar. Your body is still a bit tired and you're ramping back up to where you were. How's the toe?

From I Just Run on Wed, Jan 07, 2015 at 10:40:47 from 67.79.11.242

Russ,

The toe is "shot"... Can't really describe it other than it just hangs there. I can't really move it, it's as if the tendons are all torn lose. I had a pop and burn feeling the other day on a run with significant pain and since then just numbness. I am taping my toes together to keep it from just floating on top of the other toes. It just crooks up barefooted and without the tape. Ahhhhh...still hurts!

From Tom Slick on Wed, Jan 07, 2015 at 11:07:52 from 168.179.158.193

A good sharp pocket knife can fix this problem...or you could go see a foot doctor and he will take care of it with a good sharp pocket knife! Pretty great times with a limp & numb big toe.

From Derunzo on Wed, Jan 07, 2015 at 12:05:05 from 173.9.52.242

From I Just Run on Mon, Jan 12, 2015 at 08:35:20 from 67.79.11.242

Ha ha ... I didn't even realize I had run a progression. My run last Wed was quite faster but this one felt pretty good. Strange that some of my runs lately feel really crappy and then for no obvious reason I'll have a really good one.

From flatlander on Mon, Jan 12, 2015 at 08:52:43 from 76.31.29.220

I'm at least encouraged that you labeled some of them at marathon pace. The way you are going lately I expected you to say they were slow. Good job.

From I Just Run on Mon, Jan 12, 2015 at 09:09:57 from 67.79.11.242

Flat,

In the past I labeled anything below 8:00 pace as marathon pace. This year I am lowering that to 7:45 since 7:20 is my actual MGP.

I'll take a picture of the toe and post it one of these days. The 10 was my first double digit in a while. I was wanting to run the Austin 3M but I think it would be a waste at this time.

I stayed up a little too late last night and slept in a few minutes this morning. I was planning on another 10 mile. Decided to run a couple of faster miles so I threw a couple of slow 5K miles in the run. It was pretty cold but I made it okay with my double gloves, my extra heavy thermal tights and my heavy socks.

Ended up with a 7:38 overall pace...I guess there's more than one way to get to marathon average pace.

From Tom K on Fri, Jan 16, 2015 at 08:00:21 from 73.27.178.76

Ha! I would get so annoyed by a guy zinging by me every 3 miles, only to fall back again! That would really mess with my head! I would spend the whole race thinking "What is up with this dude?"

From I Just Run on Fri, Jan 16, 2015 at 08:08:50 from 67.79.11.242

Ha ha...well, that's kinda the way I roll anyway! :-)

From Tom K on Fri, Jan 16, 2015 at 08:15:33 from 73.27.178.76

They have Disney characters @ every half mile in the Disney Marathon. There was a guy that was getting his picture taken with every character. He would run by me, get the picture (where I would pass him), and then run by me again. Fun times.

From flatlander on Fri, Jan 16, 2015 at 08:16:25 from 198.207.244.102

I was going to say the same thing, but I see Tom beat me to it. The first time I ran Richmond, there was a guy in a bright yellow duck suit, complete with a duck-bill hat, doing that to me. I was running about a 23-minute PR that day and he kept ripping past me then fading way back; drove me nuts to the point I couldn't enjoy what was happening in my own race. (Maybe that was you, Tom?) Good running, Preston. I was worried about you this morning, I know you like it quite a bit warmer.

From Russ on Fri, Jan 16, 2015 at 09:33:32 from 74.114.3.253

It was actually warmer this morning in Billings than in Kingsbury! Way to not only get out there but have a great run. I actually prefer temps in the 30s as it's tough to overheat. Nice run.

Tom,

Even though I felt tired on this run, it appears I must be in pretty good shape comparing it to similar runs a month out from my CIM Marathon. I was really not wanting to get up a 5:00 am this morning to go and run. The first few miles I kept thinking..why am I doing this...then about mile 4 I settled into a comfortable effort and from then on the run felt pretty good. I pick up the pace for the last 5 miles to run at MP but had to push the last .5 to get there.

Still debating on running another marathon this spring. My foot/toe is still a sore subject and will probably determine what I do.

TS,

How did you know I had a problem with my big toe too? I just have a floating bone chip in it from breaking my toe when I was about 12. That's why it's so crooked. I am hoping both my big toe and the second toe just fall off!

Nice run after yesterday's harder run. I was just looking at your splits from yesterday. Is your 10 K pace really around 6:30? If so, you should be able to do 7:00 pace for a marathon without any problem. Looks like you are having a good week. Keep it up.

From I Just Run on Wed, Jan 21, 2015 at 14:58:48 from 67.79.11.242

Rhett,

I'm probably overly confident and as you can see I've only run one 10K but I do believe I can run 6:30 pace 10K and close to a 3:00 marathon...that's if my old body holds up long enough!

From Rhett on Wed, Jan 21, 2015 at 15:42:08 from 24.121.0.8

Thanks for the shout out. I've gotten some nice comments on my blog. Very nice group of runners!! Question for you. Do you use hammer gel or something similar? I use hammer gel and consume a packet every 3 miles. A half marathon is one thing, but for a full, that's 8 packets. Should I try to eat something else along the way to help prevent an upset stomach? I made peanut butter/oatmeal balls and ate one between each gel packet and it seemed to help. Open to other ideas based on experience. Thanks!!!

From I Just Run on Fri, Jan 23, 2015 at 09:02:48 from 67.79.11.242

Hey Simple Runner,

I usually use Gu gels, I seem to like them better and also most races have that brand along the course for hand out to the runners. (You should be able to find out what they are offering along the course on the marathon website.) I follow the rule of 1 Gu per 45-60 minutes. I've read and I think been told that more than that your body really can't process or actually use. I know, from past experience, too may Gu's will upset my stomach. I do all my long runs with no Gu's to make my body learn to use the fat and resources it has in reserve. I would tend to lean on the side of less than more when it comes to fueling. There are too many side effects that can happen with trying to put stuff in a stressed stomach when running. I would practice drinking some Gatorade as this is what is almost always offered on the race course too. This will give you the extra electrolytes if needed but with the cool weather you will probably not have a problem with that.

I'm hoping a couple of my blog friends will comment on this too as they have much more experience that me and may be able to point you to some articles related to the subject.

One last thing I do know and that is don't change things on race day. Whatever you are comfortable with...go with it! But, in the meantime do some experimenting on your longer runs and see if you may be overdoing the fueling.

From Rhett on Fri, Jan 23, 2015 at 14:41:53 from 24.121.0.8

I'm with IJR. I like Gu the best. They seem to be a bit smaller and easier to pack around too. I take one every 4 miles starting at mile 3 for marathons since usually aid stations are every 2 miles. I drink water at the aid stations where I take a gu and Gatorade and water at the other aid stations. I do use gu when training on any run over 12 miles but on training runs I take them every 5 miles and only drink water. It's all trial and error to see what works best for you. Good luck Simple Runner.

This run was definitly NOT intended! I went out planning on a 13 mile run but when I was 9 miles into my loop I came upon a low water crossing that was about knee deep in swiftly flowing water. It was dark and I ran into it to anckle deep soaking my shoes and socks completly. The temperature was already 42 degrees, it was raining lightly so I was already cold! I had to turn around and backtrack 9 miles making the run 18 miles. It caused me to be very late to work too! :-(

I had been dreading jumping my milage up to 18 but when I was forced to do it this morning it was not that bad. Actually, I was pretty pleased with the results. I felt like I could have upped the effort at any point and still finished strong. I did run the last 3 miles at MGP.

Glad to get a longer run under my belt, it's making me more confident that I can be in top shape for the Irvine Marathon if I decide to run it.

Tom,

I've tried several ways wrapping it. This method actually has a two strips of tape that wrap around the toe and are taped along the bottom of my foot to the heel to hold the toe down. This seems to work okay but as you can imagine nothing is comfortable.

Rhett,

Don't know how I actually hurt it. It has been getting worse and worse for months. I actually gave it a rest for a couple of months (back when I broke my scapula...that's another story). I've been to the foot doctor a couple of times and he basically said it would need to be operated on, cut the bone and shorten it in the toe. I think it's just a deformity.

Here's the details:

I met a guy (Gene Johnson) at the Turkey Trot on Thanksgiving day in Gruene. He is my age and ran a little ways behind me in the race. After the race he came and asked the usual questions and we compared running notes. Come to find out he is a seasoned marathoner and actually ran Boston last year. He took my phone number with the intent to call and coordinate a run with me. Saturday evening he called and I accepted his invitation to come to New Braunfels and run a long run with him. His goal was 18 miles at about the same pace as me. I was planning to run 20 but said 18 would be good.

I met up with him at 6:30. It was plenty warm and humid. We exchanged plesantries and then took off. I think his running style is very even paced where mine is typically more like running fartleks. :-) The course was very hilly, for me, with several elevation changes of 100, 200, 300 feet. I had to walk some of the hills while he just plodded along up all the hills. He stoped three times for water and restroom breaks but I would contine to run circles while I waited on him. (This is where I gained and additional mile.) We did stop at a convienence store but I didn't stop my watch but run in, got some water and continued running circles outside (8:42 mile) while he bought and drank some gatorade.

All in all the run was okay. I didn't feel great from start to finish but based on the course and training level I'm pretty pleased.

Hopefully Gene will ask me to come run again with him. :-)

Great run Preston!

SlowJoe, that's a great idea! Since 2010 I've run with someone else fewer than 15 times. I'd rather run alone than with someone too fast or too slow and I don't know who matches up with me. So I just run...solo.

By the way, how do you like your Altras? I've been thinking of getting a pair.

From I Just Run on Fri, Feb 06, 2015 at 09:10:28 from 67.79.11.242

Russ,

Today it was supposed to be 32 degrees this morning but only dropped to 42. That's the main reason I ran longer. :-)

As long as the weather stays like this April can wait (for me anyway).

I am trying the Altra's because of my foot/toe problem and the fact that I was having trouble finding a shoe that was wide enough at the front of my foot. My foot/toe problem is too far gone for anything to really help but that's another subject. The shoes are comfortable and I like them but I'm still having trouble with the look. with the foot shaped toe they just look really weird! :-)

Nice run, sorry to hear about the foot. Yesterday I talked to a guy at church who may have what you have. His toes were dislocated and just limp (sounds like yours). He had surgery last month where the toes were put back in place and temporary steel rods inserted in the toes to keep them straight and get the blood flowing correctly. I think the rods are in 6-8 wks before being removed. Hopefully it's not what you've got but sounded similar. He too is a runner and not using his toes had a big impact on the pad of his foot which caused him to have the surgery.

For the Love of Go 5K

This was not really a target race. Just jumped in because Callie came home and wanted to run it. Couldn't really decide if I wanted to attempt a PR or just run for fun. Running 50+ miles this week with no real speed training hasn't really set me up for a PR.

I warmed up for 2 miles @ a 8:15 pace and got back to the start about a minute after the race had started. I decided to wait for everyone to start so I was the last across the start line. :-) started out at a comfortable pace but not really pushing it, still deciding how hard I wanted to run. After about a half mile I picked it up a little. Some rolling hills kept it from being really easy so I just settled into a hard but comfortable speed. After the second mile I decided to hurt a little so I started to pick up the pace. It was actually kinda fun passing almost everyone in the race. (I think there were over 250 runners.)

Ended up 2nd overall and 1st in my age. Was announced as a "Boston Qualifier". :-)

That is a great time, but contrary to what you said it wasn't unpredictable. I noticed you ran almost that fast earlier in the week for the last two miles of a 7-mile run. Plus, you have to be the first guy to ever qualify for Boston with a 5K, that's very special.

Ya, what's the updated prognosis on that bum big toe?

From I Just Run on Mon, Feb 23, 2015 at 13:04:00 from 67.79.11.242

The toe and foot are not good. Very swollen Saturday and Sunday with what looks like some bruising on the top of my foot. Today, Monday, it feels like there's a big lump on the center/ball of my foot. I'm afraid I've been wasting all of this time the last few weeks fighting through the pain and keeping on running to try and run another marathon this spring. All of my current goals are dropping off. I've got business trips and vacation the next three weeks so I can't really go to the doctor. He's just going to say operate anyway. I guess I'll just struggle through the next few weeks and maybe try to tough out a half marathon (with no PR goal in mind) before I go under the knife or retire from running.

From Yasir on Mon, Feb 23, 2015 at 13:26:11 from 99.20.240.157

focus on getting healthy. My best wishes

From Tom Slick on Mon, Feb 23, 2015 at 14:09:44 from 168.179.158.193

doesn't sound like this big toe and foot issue is going to get well and go away on it's own! Better bite the bullet and see your podiatrist or orthopedic specialist sooner than later.....

From I Just Run on Mon, Feb 23, 2015 at 14:12:53 from 67.79.11.242

Already seen him twice...I just don't like the prognosis. Stupid TOE!

From SlowJoe on Mon, Feb 23, 2015 at 19:14:16 from 104.51.208.13

From Tom Slick on Tue, Feb 24, 2015 at 09:06:41 from 168.179.158.193

If he cuts it off you will weigh less! It just depends on how long the doc wants you to stay off your feet after the procedure? And you've got two full marys coming up in April !!!! I wish you the best no matter what you chose!

From rAtTLeTrAp on Tue, Feb 24, 2015 at 22:07:56 from 174.21.54.79

Have you been to the doc for that foot yet? I broke my little toe last week, fortunately I don't need that one for anything. It is a little achy all the time but it only hurts bad if I touch it.

So....I decided to quit running for a while to see if my toe would get better. With this layoff it has actually seemed to get worse. Looking at my toe I believe it is starting to fuse the joint in place whereas when I was running on it, it continued to flex the joint.

I went for my annual check up with my general doctor yesterday. He looked at my toe and said it looked like "hammertoe"..the same thing I have been calling it. He believes I need to have surgery on it but gave me the name of another foot specialist to see for a second opinion. I set an appointment for the 18th to see this new doctor. I asked my doctor if they could just cut off that toe and he said "well, you really don't need that toe for anything". Don't know if he was kidding, but I wasn't.

I'll keep you guys informed about the prognosis but all I can advise is that you keep running because I'm coming to get you when I get this toe fixed!!!

Here's a picture...it's not as swolen as usual.

From I Just Run on Fri, Mar 20, 2015 at 19:31:55 from 66.102.7.173

MRI today. Visit the doctor next Wednesday for evaluation and operation. Plan. the best option is to just sew the torn tendon back. The second option requires cutting the bone and wrapping another tendon around the top of my toe...or something like that.

From rAtTLeTrAp on Fri, Mar 20, 2015 at 19:36:16 from 75.165.125.194

Sorry guys for not blogging more I've just been busy and not much to say.

My foot surgery is scheduled for April 6th. There are two possible procedures. Both require cutting into my foot on the top and bottom. One procedure requires cutting the bone and putting pins and screws in the straighten the toe. Neither procedure sounds good. When I ask if I can run again the doctor says "that's the hope".

We'll see how it goes! :-)

Good luck with that. We have surgery at my house all of a sudden too (not me), never a happy time. For whatever it's worth, I think doctors are always conservative with those sorts of predictions. Their opinions are based on the statistical mean of the patients they see, not super fit people like yourself who are literally 1 in a thousand. My back doctor was certain that if I ever ran again it would be at a shuffle, even though he is a runner himself, yet I hope to be challenging a PR in Boston in 3 weeks. I'm pretty sure you'll be back better than ever.

I have some movement in it but its not flexable at all. I go back to the doctor on Wednesday and am sure he'll let me take the boot off.

Since the incision is healed I decided I could at least go to the gym and ride the stationary bike and lift some weights. Wetn 5 miles and did some upper body weights. I will be sore tomorrow.

Here's the latest picture:

Going to the doctor today and will probably get the boot off. That will be good but I'm far from able to run. The toe and foot are still pretty swolen up.

2 miles on the elliptical (I'm counting it as running miles). I have to put my weight on my heel but it seems to work pretty well. My HR was as if I were into a marathon 15 miles.

Then some weight lifting...

It's going to be a rough come back.

It has been a rough few days....

Callie and Matt's wedding went off without a hitch (well actually the did get hitched)! The rain held off all afternoon and evening...it was great!

Sunday morning was a little scary with threats of the new inlaws (in a rental house) possibly flooding and not being able to get in touch with them to warn them. Some other dear/close friends home flooded up 7' in their single story house with them barly excaping into the attic.

We spent the last two days trying to salvage some of their stuff and gutting all the sheetrock and insulation out of their house.

We know several other families whos homes flooded but thankfully no one was lost. Many of these houses were not anywhere near the river or even the 500 year flood plain.

Rough time in San Marcos area right now!

Pray!

Hi guys,

I've been on vacation for 2-1/2 weeks. We went on a cruise in the Mediterranean (Italy, Greece, Turkey).

I still haven't been able to run. My foot is still too sore but it is getting better. I did cycling class two days on the cruise and actually ran one mile on the treadmill but it wasn't very good. Hopefully I'll be back in a few more weeks.

All else is good except for the 17 pounds I've gained! :-)

First day to really try and run. My foot/toe is still not 100%...it's more like 60%. Lots of pressure on the center/ball of my foot but not a sharp pain as before. I went to the gym and ran 4 miles on the TM at an easy 11-12 min. pace with a short .10 mile pick-up to a 7:30 pace on each mile. I did not run the 4 miles continuous but too a short break and did 3 reps of upper body weights inbetween each mile. Now, after the run, my foot feel no better or worse so I think that is a good sign.

On anoter note, I went and bought a new road bike on saturday. My wife wasn't very excited about that but I think she realizes my pain in not being able to do anything (running or cycling). I've promised to be very careful and take the cycling down a notch or two to try and avoid any more accidents.

I didn't think I could do it but I actually gained about 15 pounds during this time off. Several pounds were put on during my cruise vacation a week ago. Four months ago I was about 156 lbs. I weight in at 172 lbs after the cruise. Now I am back down to 164 after a week of light eating.

Here's one picture from our trip. :-)

Sounds like pretty good news on the foot too. Cycling will help you out with the weight too, but for the love of God, keep it under 50 mph this time!

Very cool about the running! I've been (impatiently) waiting for an update, hoping against hope that your foot would feel better soon. Looks like it's finally happening. Take it easy on the come back as you seem to only have one speed: go! And I second Joe's comment about the bike.

I'm really happy for you to get back to physical activity. Although it really bugs me that after 1 week of light eating you weighed less than me at the height of my 50M training.... I need to stop eating so much crap.

Got up this morning planning a 25-30 mile ride. as I was getting ready I realized our little dog was barking like crazy outside. When I looked outside I saw tons of cyclers going by my house. I got ready and went out to see what ride they were on. Come to find out they were riding "David's Ride" which starts and ends about 20 miles from my house. I decided to join in and ride with some of them for a while. before I knew it I had ridden to the end of the ride (20+miles). So I filled my water bottles and headed Home.

42.5 miles today on the new road bike.

I hate having flats it messes up the whole ride. I brought me some Gator Skin tires and Mr. Tuffy tire liners and I've not flatted since. By the way nice ride and average.

From Matt Schreiber on Thu, Jul 16, 2015 at 20:43:15 from 66.17.112.31

I'm wondering if getting a flat tire in cycling throws you off your rhythm like having to sprint to a porta-potty when you're running. Hard to get back in a groove.

From I Just Run on Fri, Jul 17, 2015 at 08:11:32 from 108.178.73.170

HB,

I don't think I'm ready to buy new tires since this is my brand new bike and I only have 162 miles on the tires. Actually, as I bought the bike, my wife made the bike shop upgrade the tires to a heftier style. Maybe I need to get some of those liners though.

Matt,

It's a bummer when you have a flat, yes it throws everything off.

So much for trying to lose some weight. Tuesday I ate Texas BBQ, Wednesday I had steak and again last night we went out with some friends to a steak restaurant and I had steak again! I'm a pig....don't know what I'm thinking.

6 mile on the Gym TM with a few upper body weights to warm up. All miles were 10 min. pace except the last was ramped up each mile to a final quarter mile at 7:30 pace.

Went to the doctor yesterday. He said my toe/foot was doing as good as to be expected. He said it was about 60% and would take another 3-4 months to be 90% and a year to be 100%. The cable and reconstruction has caused my toe to be permanently stiff but he says that is a good thing. Slowly the scar tissue will break down and the soreness on the bottom of my foot will go away. He says I need to run in stiff sole shoes so they only bend at the toe and not in the middle of the shoe (any recommendations?). So...the truth is it may be a while before I'm back to where I want to be.

Solomon has a great stiff-soled shoe. I tried the Salomon XT Wings 3 and loved them but they were too wide in the toe box for me and gave me blisters. But they were very stiff. Try that or another trail-running shoe. Or maybe Justin Ropers...

From Rhett on Sat, Jul 25, 2015 at 14:56:57 from 199.117.154.54

IJR, because of the the rocky terrain I'v been running on lately, I've been running in Sportiva Trail shoes. They have a rock plate in the bottom and are therefore very stiff. I imagine any trail shoe with a rock plate in it will give you a similarly stiff shoe.

From I Just Run on Fri, Aug 07, 2015 at 09:06:19 from 108.178.73.170

Dan,

I'm no bike expert but I originally bought a carbon fiber Condor bike from:

http://www.bikeshopwarehouse.com/

It was a good bike and value but for my latest bike I bought an alunimum Trek bike from a local bike shop.

Both were slightly less than $ 1,500 and on the mid-scale of quality for aggressive riding. You can go lower that this, in the $ 1,000 range but then get in the souped up walmat range.

I went with the local bike shop this time because I wanted all of the service and help they provide with the sale. A bike in the range of my first bike would have cost above $ 2,000 at the local shop but I didn't want to spend that much.

There are many good brands of bikes out there but you sure can't go wrong with a mid-range Trek. If you have a "good" local bike shop they can be really helpful if your not to bike/mechanically savvy like me.

Hey Preston, you seem to be suffering from the old runners disease...."The harder you push the healing the slower it goes" Healing goes in ups and downs and flat spots. Take a chill pill and get back into healing the slow and steady method. Ya know it takes at least 12 months to heal up just the soft tissue damage you sustained during surgery! Not to mention the long an difficult bone healing.......

Hey Man, don't give up now, you've come so very far.....

Do you remember when I got tipped over last November 2014, It's been until the last week that I've run in pain! Just hang on to all the progress you've made and good things will come to you!!!!

After a long stay in Georgia I'm back in Texas. I didn't have much time to run there so I lost some ground.

Just as an update my foot is still about the same. It's very sore to walk barefooted but with a good shoe it's just uncomfortable. After a run it's sore for a while but tolerable. The toe is just stiff and sits there and doesn't do much. The pain is really on the bottom of my foot.

Today was a better day to run than it's been in a while but the humidity still made it feel hot and I sweated a ton. The last miles were tiring because of the effort you can see by my HR. I'm ready for the 7's to be easy and the 6's to the hard and not 8's.

Those foot injuries - notoriously hard to overcome. See lots of NBA greats with foot injuries. As Tom said, I think you're doing really well. Have you tried soaking the foot in a 5 gallon bucket ice bath for 10 minutes a pop? I'm sure you have, but if not, it's a miracle worker. Hurts like a sonuva gun but it reduces the swelling. Learned it from a lady who's been running 40+ mpw for 30 years.

At least the heat index is a little less severe on a bike compared to running. Nice job. I am still too chicken to ride in the dark.

A little tired this morning but managed to get out for a 10 miler. I'm still waiting on a nice cool front so I can have my break-thru run. :-)

Thanks guys,

I'm feeling much better about my running lately but my foot is sill a major limiting factor. I called and set another appointment with the foot doctor for next Thursday. I wasn't supposed to even go back but with the pain I'm experiencing I think he needs to look at it. I assume its scar tissue as the joint in my foot is obviously much larger than normal. I suspect he might give me a cortisone/steroid shot to break down the scar tissue.

I like progressive runs...I think that's all I'll run from now on. :-)

Although slow (intentionally) my HR has dropped almost 20 BPM over the last two months on the same run. Now if I can just get this foot healed I can start some real training. After this run I had to take a day off as my foot was really hurting. It seems these slow runs hurt it more than the faster ones.

Today it seemed a little warmer than the conditions read, but better than normal. Today I go back to the foot doctor, on my own accord, to see if there is anything that can be done to relieve some of my foot pain. I'm sure at best it might be a cortisone shot but he may not want to do that. I'm really hoping for something to relieve the nagging pain.

On a different note, today I ran the big loop. No real goal but as I ran the first part was just running while the middle was a slightly uncomfortable and then a push at the end. I also had run the same run about a month ago (8/28). It is interesting to compare the two as the conditions, topography and other factor are all exactly the same or very close. Looking at the paces and HR it is interesting to see the improvement mile after mile and how much it has been in a short time. I think in anoter month I will improve another 30 seconds per mile with the same effort.

Ya, what did the Doc say? And I think you should just run the Long Beach 1/2 with your daughter, just have fun!

From I Just Run on Mon, Oct 05, 2015 at 12:04:33 from 108.178.73.170

Doc said it was still healing fine/looked good/joint was still tight. I told him how sore it has been and showed him how large/swollen the joint was and he said "yes". So basically no relief given just assurance it should get better. Since then it was so sore on Friday and Saturday that I could not run at all. Visibly limping every step.

I started a regiment of Alieve Saturday evening and decided to ride my bike in lue of a long run this weekend (not that I could have run anyway). Rode to church 25 miles and then back home 25 miles at an avg. speed of 17.5 mph each way. (So 50 miles total.) I am getting stronger on the bike and know from past experience it will keep me in somewhat good condition, it just takes a lot of time.

My foot was sore but the biking was bearable.

Definitely takes time. When I ride I attempt to ride like I run - that is, no resting, no coasting, and always applying pressure. I feel like I can get an equal workout time wise.

With the regiment of Alieve my foot felt much better this morning so I went out for a 7 mile run. The weather conditions are improving: 70 degrees, 50% humidity and 50 deg. dew point .

My legs were a little tired from the 50 mile bike ride yesterday but nothing was sore.

Again, comparing this run to the same run less than a month ago, I have improved a full minute with the same HR effort. Also, I almost hit a 6:XX mile on the last mile without really trying. I'm making improvement despite the little amount of running I'm able to do. I've averaged less than 30 miles per week over the last 8 weeks, since I started back running.

I decided to push a little harder today than I have since I started back running. Fastest pace and highest HR for any run at any distance. I could feel the lactate in my legs nearing the end of the run and my left hamstring got a little tight. All in all it was a good run though. I originally planned to run 10 but was running short on time so I made it 8.5.

My foot is feeling better with the regiment of Aleve. The weather is better but still warm enough to get a good sweat on.

Still trying to decide how to run the Long Beach Half Marathon this weekend but I've pretty much decided to just run it with Callie and hopelly help her hit her goal. I think I'm in about 7:20 condition right now but if I run with Callie it will be more like 8:45. The weather is supposed to be warm (I think actually in the high 60's to start) somewhat like what I'm running in right now. We'll see...

I say, "run with Callie"! You never know how many opportunities you'll have to run with your daughter and at this stage of your return to running you don't need to go out and break something and louse up all your hard work.

Ha ha Tom,

Finished a while ago but stayed to take in some of the race experience. The run went good. Now I know kow it is to run a race "easy". It was pretty warm though, pretty much like running in texas right now. Callie did pretty good but a little slower than she wanted at a 9:12 pace. I'll write a full report in a day or two. Thanks for checking in.

Had a fun time running with Callie in this race. Her goal was to break 2:00... fell a little short but still okay with the heat. The plan was to stick close to a 9:00 pace for the entire race. Callie is not up for running negative splits like I am. 9:09,9:11,8:55,8:53,8:58,9:12,9:12,9:09,9:11,9:26,9:46:9:21,8:57,last .1 ??. Callie started to fatigue at mile 10-11.5 but picked up the pace the last 1.6 miles. I encountered her by telling her to just start picking off runners in front of her. She passed over 59 runners in the last 2 miles. This is a big race with a full, half marathon and even a bike tour. I was a little disappointed in the crowd support even compared to some of the smaller races I've been to. The half marathoners were allowed to start at 6 am instead of 7:39 as originally planned due to the heat. It was about 74 degrees at the start. I am happy I decided to run with Callie and hoping my encouragment helped her shave a few seconds off her time!

No recovery needed after the Long Beach Marathon on Sunday. My foot felt terrible the two days before the race and then fair the day of the race. Today it felt better than it has in weeks, I also felt refreshed (other than I got home and in bed at 2 am this morning. Decided to do a faster and shorter progressive run this morning. The weather was warm at 80 degrees but the humidity and dew point were low making it much more plesant than 70 degrees with the typical 90% humidity. It's funny how much hotter it can be if the dew point is low and still feel good.

I'm thinking I'm in about 7:20 shape for the Chosen Half Marathon coming up in about a month and hoping to drop that down to about 7:10 by race time.

This is the first time I've hit a 6:xx pace in a long....time!

I should have done this run yesterday, it was much better weather then.

The last 4 miles of this route are the hilliest. I typically run the other direction but though this would be good preparation for the upcoming Chosen Half. The Chosen Half is now a one way run (not an out and back as before) with more of the hills at the end of the race.

I was hoping/thinking I could do a little better on this run but it's still about the same pace as my latest 10 mile runs with the same effort. So 3 miles gained is good. :-) Last mile was the fastest but I payed in effort!

Tom,

Getting there but far from 100%. My foot isn't allowing me to really push very much. I've only been able to avg about 30 miles a week. If I were 100% I would be pushing for a PR at the Chosen but instead I'm hoping to run about a 7:10 avg...and that's hoping. :-)

On the good side...This run was about 30 seconds faster per mile than a month ago on the same run with the same HR effrot and one minute faster per mile than the same run two months ago with the same HR effort! All this improvement while only being able to run an average of 30 miles per week. :-)

On the bad side... My foot pain just won't go away. For some reason last friday it got really sore, I could hardly walk on it so I had to skip running Sat and Sun. I did bike Sun but it was painful. Started taking Alieve again and was able to run this morning on a pretty sore foot.

My foot was a little better and I decided to run on the TM instead of the Elliptical today. I haven't figured out what causes the flair ups of swelling and pain but it's really been sore for the last few days. It was very sore when I started and seemed better as I ran but afterwards back to very painful. Averaged 7:50 pace with some good speed 6's and below on some short 1/4 burst, then back to mid 8's.

Saturday...started a regiment of Alieve again to take some of the swelling out.

Now very concerned with my left foot. Having an occasional sharp pain in the same place as where the right foot broke down. :-(((((((

Still going to try and run in the next couple of days...maybe it's nothing.

Foggy again this morning so I went to the Gym again.

3 Miles on the EL machine then I tried 3 mile on the TM. Right foot sore but bearable, left foot just had a few little tweeks of pain. 9,9,8 min pace at 1% incline.

Went to Airrosti Rehab today. They asked a lot of questions about my feet and then did physical therapy on both of them. It hurt so much I wanted to cry! My foot has been so sore I haven't been able to run for a few days. Went out for a bike ride and ran into this 20 miles into my ride. Had to turn around and have Sarah come pick me up at mile 24 since the original plan was to meet her at her sisters for dinner which is about a 35 total mile trip. There was no other route for me unless I went on the freeway. :-(

Went to the physical therapist last Thursday for my feet. I've been doing some excercises to try and help but honestly my feet feel the same. I only ran 18 miles last week and 12 of those miles were on the EL machine and none on the road. My right foot was really hurting this weekend and I couldn't run but rode my bike one day.

Today I woke up and my right foot felt a lot better, the weather was great (52 degrees, 82% humidity and 48 degree dew point)! Decided to try a short run and came up with this out and back run. Legs felt great to start but lack of conditioning made my cardio struggle. We'll see how the feet like this run after a few hours.

Chosen Half Marathon coming up this Saturday. I think I've made it through the training cycle (if you can call it that) and will be able to race. My right foot continues to give me problems. I have been to the physical theropist twice and now they are sending me back to the orthopedic doctor this Wedensday. My toe won't really bend up and the bottom, at the joint, is very..very sore. The physical theropist doesn't know what to do.  My left foot continues to have intermittent sharp pains. I know, I know...just a lot of whining here. :-(

When I signed up for the race, I was hoping to run a decent race but now I'm afraid I may have to settle for a disappointing slow run. Aiming for a 7:25 pace (which would still be my 10th slowest out of 11 half races in the last five years) seems too optomistic. I'm really thinking that if I can break the 7:30 avg pace I would be doing the best I could based on my condition. Anyway...feel free to estimate my race time based on my haphazard training. :-) The good news is they are breaking the awards into age groups of 5's this year. I must say I'm glad to be running in the 55-59 group this year. Before I was always wanting to run in the 30-40 age group! :-)

The course in now a point to point and not an out and back as it has been in the last years. I was hoping it would make it faster but looking at the elevation chart it seems to have more hill in the first half now. In the first two miles there is a stretch that rises 200' in about a half mile, I may walk that portion!

Here's my run for today:

You're getting it done, though; 10 at 7:45 is not bad at all for a shakeout run. Temps should be a lot lower on Saturday, so if you can get your foot/toe warmed up and stretched out you might do a lot better than you think -- 7:25 splits certainly seems achievable based on these numbers. Good luck.

Well I guess you can consider this my signature race since I've run it 5 times now. This year was the first time its been a Point to Point race though. The race has normally been in October but this year they moved it to November, I assume to try and have it when the weather is more conducive to running. But, needless to say, that was a fail as the weather was very hot and humid. It was 67 degrees, 100% humidity and foggy during most of the race. The norther blew in very quickly for the last mile of the race, oh how I was hoping it would blow in at the start.

As you know I was ill prepared for this race as I have been recovering from foot/toe surgery for 8 months now. I had to go to Florada to a trade show on Thursday and Friday also and walk the trade show floor for two solid days. I was very concerned as my foot was very sore and swolen all day Friday and as I flew home that evening. I decided to take a regiment of vitamin I starting on Friday and thankfully it did the trick as my foot was bearable before and during the race. My left foot has actually been much better lately and I haven't had any sharp pains for a few days. (I'm hoping the pain I was seeing in that foot was only a nerve condition and not a tendon condition.)

I would say the race was not as enjoyable overall as in the past years. Since it was a Point to Point race this year, they had to bus people to the start with some of the bus assignments starting as early as 4:00 am. My ride was at 5:30 am. I feel sorry for the people who had the 4 am rides as they had to wait 3 hours for the race to start. I heard a lot of complaints about this. The good thing is they bused us to the start where there was an indoor resort lodge were we could wait. Luckly it was warm so the lodge, which would only hold a hundred or so people, was not packed, most were just outside waiting.

I felt good at the beginning of the race and was hoping to pull off some miricle run. The first mile felt pretty good and I ran it as planned close to 7:30 pace. Miles 2 & 3 I tried to keep an even effort through some small rolling hills but was suprised that my HR was already well above 160.  At mile 4 I decided I needed to let off the pace a little to try and keep my HR from rising any more. As you can see I ran the next four miles with a very consistant effort but obviously at a much slower pace than I wanted. I could already feel my quads tightening up around mile 4 or 5. Knowing that feeling doesn't go away but only gets worse I just tried to maintain the effort through mile 7. Mile 8 and 9 are mostly flat with some slightly down hill so I tried to pick up the pace a little and knowing the dreaded mile 10 was coming up I hoped to pick up a little time before that awful 1 mile climb. I slogged through mile 10 at a blazing 8:10 pace with my quads really screaming at this point of the race. I knew that if I could get through mile 10 I would be able to at least crawl to the finish line. Mile 11 is a nice long straight run with some long rolling ups and downs and I felt like I was gaining some confidence back so I pushed a little on the last half of the mile. I had caught up to a group of four people and decided to challange them to a sprint to the finish. They took me up on that challange and we ran together for the next mile or so but each one dropped off through the next couple of miles. The last one dropped off at mile 12.5 as I picked up the pace to below 6:00. As I pulled away he said "I give up". I just smiled internally and continued to push to the end.

Obviously this was not my best race timewise but I do feel like I controlled a high level of effort throughout the race. My quads have confirmed that effort the last couple of days.

How is the foot? Or DID you become a gym rat and now belong to a rat blog?

Sorry guys for being absent from he BLOG. I decided to take a few weeks off and see if my foot would get better. So far there's not much improvement. It's always sore and some days it's so sore I walk with an exaggerated limp. No rhyme or reason why. It's actually no better than when I was forcing myself to run on it a few weeks ago. I'm going to wait it out a while longer and keep hoping for some improvement. In the meantime I've been roping quite a bit more. I'll post some pictures on today's entry.

Beeville Roping 12/19/15 today but things are looking good for a big payout this year. My horse is working great and I've improved greatly on the heel side over the last few months.

I am honored to know you. Hope you don't mind if I start name-dropping during the holiday circuit.

That looks way cooler than running. Keep having fun with that till that foot gets better. In the mean time, change your blog name to IJUSTROPE. It's still IJR. :)
