| i had a bit of excitement today during the run... as i made my way back along the trail, i caught up with another runner, and as i prepared to pass, he noticed me a sped up, which unbeknownst to him, triggered the pavlovian response of me licking my chops. his increased tempo caused a brief delay in my passing, but as i moved forward, i heard him picking up the pace right behind me. again, an almost instinctive response within me caused me to stretch out my legs just a bit more, increase the cadence ever so slightly. the other guy repeated the process several more times, testing my response, which was identical to the first. to his credit, he lasted longer than i predicted, probably the better part of a mile. soon enough, though, the sound of him hot on my heels faded, and as i made a turn up the road, a quick glance back confirmed that he was sucking wind, shuffling down the road (hardly in the running form requisite of a vibram toe-shoe runner...) yeah, this did feed the ego a bit, but every now and then it's fun to get into these impromptu races....

| so i wrote this up a couple days ago about monday's run. today's was similar, if not a bit wetter/cooler: there's something about this time of year; at least there is for me.
i
might not always be in peak racing shape around Christmas time, but i'm
typically coming back from whatever fall event knocked me out for a
bit. (and this year's was a doozy. so was last year's, come to think of it, but in entirely different ways)
this
quasi-fit state allows me to stretch my legs out to a degree not
achieved in several months, lets me concentrate more on enjoying the run
rather than willing myself through it.
couple
this with the ubiquitously fickle weather of the South, which
occasionally grants us a nice day, and the perfect conditions are met.
sunny. 50 degrees F. calm.
it's
days like today that keep me
in the sport. flying through town in shorts and a plain, white, cotton
t-shirt, i feel my love affair with running coming back, and i almost
feel guilty at how much i'm enjoying myself.
i hope you all have days like this, runs like this, memories like this.

Another post to an ultrarunning email group of which I'm a member. Hopefully you'll find this worth the read...
I was surprised by the number of people out and about so early this morning. Normally my 5am runs are fairly solitary, especially this time of year.
Not that the solitude is a problem; on the contrary, it is one of several motivations for running at such an hour - that all-too-oft cited enjoyment of seeing one's own breath condense in a backlit cloud under the streetlight while hearing nothing but that same breath, punctuated by the soothing rhythm of one foot landing lightly in front of the other.
Certainly, the foot traffic remained at a minimum. Twenty-something degrees tends to assure that.
However, the number of cars in the distance was somewhat surprising. It wasn't enough to disrupt anything from my perspective, simply something noted in passing, as the number of direct encounters was still relatively low.
A pleasant feature of this unusually busy morning was the view from atop a little stob of a street that has become the highest ascent of my morning runs.
Once the turnaround at the top had been made and my immediate path ahead screened for ice, I glanced up to see the lights of Decatur casting a magnificent projection of cool, yellow light onto the already thinning cloud cover.
The clouds have all but cleared out by now, promising a clear, star-filled run in the near future, but every now and then it's nice to be able to enjoy the scene provided by the much maligned blanket of clouds.
