Lunch: 4 miles w/ Megan, averaged 9:12. HR 154.

Megan was on the move again today. Negative split and progression on what is a down and then up course. Roads were mostly clear with just enough shoulder for marginal safety. We got together with my siblings and did some sledding on the old back hill. I brought out my middle school snowboard and did a few short runs downs the smaller section of the back field with a beer. Made me wish I could put time and money in snowboarding, but cycling is already too expensive.

Did captain's chair and some core machines and some weak pullups and chinups. It's been a while.

9 weeks of the cough, preceded by about a week of a minor cold. A new cold started kicking in today. I've never been so sick as when I have lived here. I am wondering if it is something environmental, though Megan seems normal and is not catching anything I have.

School starts Monday.

Got some light snow that made things a touch slippery but nothing bad. Cold is definitely there. Trying to keep it from flaring up, but I refuse to take a rest day at this point.

Went to the gym after to allow Megan to use my guest pass feature. Did captain's chair, some core machine, and the hip machines.

Got up around 8 or 9 when Megan was getting up (I slept on the couch and didn't cough too much, but was worried I would). I felt awful when I got up. Slept until noon. Got up for a bit and did some minor work, but stayed on the couch. Slept from 2:50-4:30 and then again from 8:30-9:30. Felt somewhat better. Not coughing as much, but when I do it is really intense.

Man, that stinks about how long this is dragging out. Are you missing work over this?

From Bret on Wed, Jan 08, 2020 at 12:48:33 from 216.234.133.229

Sorry to hear about your condition Jason. Perhaps you have an infection of some sort that is more than just a lingering cold that could be eliminated with some antibiotics? Been to see a new doctor lately?

From Eugene on Wed, Jan 08, 2020 at 18:42:59 from 104.189.16.160

hope you feel better soon Jason. from ages 16-19 i got a month-long sickness that sounds exactly the same and it was literally the worst. a steroid inhaler and breathing treatments helped, but it's still miserable when you can't breathe without coughing up a long.

From Jason D on Wed, Jan 08, 2020 at 18:52:01 from 73.144.88.57

I've been through 2 courses of antibiotics in November and then 10 days of steroids in December and used an inhaler. I was down to a mild cough around Christmas, but got another cold. Much better today, but I'm at the 2-month mark for being sick.

Tom: not missing work as we just started this week. Monday was tough by the end of the day, but today was better.

Thanks.

Dark and chilly but good run. Waited for jury duty for 7.5 hours and never got called. I was hoping to be more a part of the process, but I guess I participated as required. I read a bit about training with a power meter for cycling. Very data oriented stuff. Much more complex than running which is both interesting and (of course) expensive.

I'm shifting my focus to cycling for the future while still doing a decent amount of running to maintain weight (currently to lose weight) and destress.

Still waiting on parts for my bike, so I decided to buy a power meter and have them install that while I am at it. Apparently it's the only way to train for cycling.

Got a call from the shop that my bottom bracket on the frame is cracked, so they initiated the warranty process. I am hoping it is covered. I'm guessing I have a decent sized bill already coming to me. Looks like it will be at least a week or two before I get into training. I'll likely have to do a few spin classes starting this week. They are actually pretty fun. Definitely a good workout.

Had a nice dinner and evening with Megan.

40' easy, then 3 x 5' fairly hard w/ 3' easy recovery and 10' cool down. Wanted to try to put some watts down and see how I felt as I will be doing intervals when I get my bike back. I find it easier to ride on the trainer than the treadmill, at least currently.

Megan and I went to a CARE event, which is a partnership with a local church and Oakland to put on events for international students. People are assigned a student and they go to events and the get togethers. Megan has been doing it for a few semesters, and I should have been. We had a good time, even though Megan's student hasn't been able to make the events.

PM: 34' on the trainer to do a ramp test.

Forgot to link my HRM, but the effort was quite hard toward the end. The machine increase power every minute after a warm up and it takes you best effort prior to failure. It's not super accurate I don't think. It's like doing 400 meter repeats to failure and using that to try to predict lactate theshold, but I needed a number to start with for training. I got 225. I would imagine (and others suggested) that is pretty low. I doubt it is 300, but I would imagine 250-275 watts maybe.

Reinstein on TrainerRoad (the names make no sense): 3 x 12' over/unders w/ 2' @ 95% of FTP and 1' @ 105% of FTP w/ 10' recoveries. In running terms this is like doing 12' alternating @ just a whisker over 1-hour race effort for 2' and 1' at just under 1-hour race effort.

Example: Your 1-hour race pace is 6:00, then your overs would be at about 6:18 and your unders would be around 5:42. Something like that, but cycling is doing in watts, not pace or HR (though of course there is a corresponding HR).

Felt quite good. After 4 or 5 miles I wanted to go longer, but 10 was plenty. I think I am going to switch back to double on Thursdays and Sundays (my two run, non-cycling days) to help keep my mileage up while recovering from riding. 30-40 miles a week doesn't seem like much but my overall cycling time is increasing from 4ish hours to about 6 or so. Currently around 9 hours between two sports. This summer I peaked at 20 hours, which was kind of nuts, but I was just having fun.

Did Carson, which was 6 x 6-7 minutes @ 85-95% of FTP. Basically it was around the effort of a set of mile repeats done at maybe 90% with 2' recoveries. It's a really productive workout when you only have an hour. I wasn't enthused by the 2' cool down, so I added an extra 10'.

Running day tomorrow. I feel like I have a good pattern going, though I would like my running mileage to be at least 50 or 60, but you cannot do it all. 30-40 with cycling hours seems sustainable.

Thanks. We are in the process of getting a realtor. Our lease ends on the 15th of May, so timing is a bit tricky.

Hip is fine. It's an issue I have had since 2013. Got it fixed up in 2018 and it's just tightened up again. Nothing serious.

From jtshad on Wed, Mar 04, 2020 at 07:46:35 from 141.221.191.225

Interest rates are dropping, good time to be looking at loans and house purchases. Any luck with a realtor? Pick a good one with experience and not a discount, they earn their fees (which the seller pays anyways!) on knowing how to ensure the transaction is legal, compliant and complete. Ask about and understand "agency". My mom was a realtor for 30+ years and we are working with a good one in Arizona for my in-laws house purchase (he has helped a ton!).

Our heat went out either this day or on Tuesday and as of Thursday they haven't fixed it. They sent someone out and he took pictures to show them the unit is beyond repair (I imagine). I have a space heater and I have been running the oven. It hasn't been that cold. We also have a new neighbor who smokes pot in his apartment and has thumping bass. I have not gone over because I am pretty sure I won't be able to keep from doing violence.

Just over two hours. One of the guys I ride with has created a COVID-19 Invitational Time Trial series. He creates a Strava segment (COVID-19 Invitational Time Trial: Prologue) and you go out and time trial it. It's great because it keeps things feeling social. The idea is to go out alone so you aren't in groups. I gave it a hard effort, but it was slow (about 18.7 MPH). Course had chunky gravel (freshly graded) and some tar. I'm currently last out of 7. The guys ahead of me are (not surprisingly) much faster. I need to drop the extra 10-12 lbs I am carrying. I look forward to seeing what some of the other segments are. Part of the difficulty is memorizing the roads and the turns.

Last day of physical therapy for my hip, so I figured why not run for 2 hours when I haven't run in almost a week? Lots of people out. Lots of them figuring out that walking and exercise is not as bad as they thought. Run was very good and needed. I will likely run tomorrow and maybe Saturday and see what Sunday looks like. This ran will make the dirt roads muddy, but they will also pack down when they dry with everything graded.

Turned a corner with feeling completely insane this week. It's a very wild time to be alive.

Did quite a few pushups. I'm focusing on getting prison ripped like Phil Collen with the gyms being closed. Thinking about a blog pushup challenge, but I need a bit of time.

Weather was good, but I tried to get some work done. Having a very hard time focusing. Took Megan for a drive on some of the gravel roads. A pothole almost swallowed my driver side front wheel of my Subaru. I think Megan was a little nervous after that. A bit of snow tonight, which will really mess the roads up. Warmer weather coming though, so it will melt quickly but I imagine it will be muddy until it dries out.

62 mile mountain bike ride? Or road? How long does that take?

From Jason D on Thu, Mar 26, 2020 at 18:44:12 from 73.144.88.57

Jon: roads, but they are country roads. Dirt, but they call them gravel so the pace is dictated by conditions. If it is soft, it is slow. If it is chunky (from grading), it is slow. However, sometimes it is smoother than tar with good amounts of rain and enough cars compacting it. When the conditions are good, it's fast like road riding but with lower traffic and actual trees :-)

This was a bit over 4 hours (15 MPH). I am on a gravel bike, which is basically an endurance road bike with the capability to take wider tires. I am running 38 mm tires (1.5 inches) with slight tread, while road bike tires vary, but are around 25-28 mm (~1-1.1).

I didn't program the segment in my computer, so I wrote it on the inside of my left forearm. Worked great. Just under 19MPH on rolling gravel with a number of turns. Averaged heart rate was 182 (peaked at 190!) and averaged power was 283. Put me 8th out of 18, which was far better placing (so far) than last week. Noodled around back to the car, but not before taking a picture of a giant tree with a plaque. We like to cut down trees unnecessarily in South Eastern Michgian, but some of them get awards.

COVID-19 Invitational Time Trial Stage 3

I rode from the house and it took me almost two hours to get to the segment. Segment is around 24-26 minutes depending on pace. I wanted 19+ MPH (rolling hills and gravel). I was rolling around 20+ for the first half and got slowed the second half because some of the downhills were sandy loose gravel and I didn't want to eat it by have too much movements. Tried to smash it at the end but I was dying. Managed 19MPH. Would have liked to be faster, but this ride capped off a 15 hour cycling week. Heart rate for 26 minutes was 183. Much higher than I could do in a 26' minute running time trial though max heart rates and zones are not the same between the two sports.

The park was quite empty at the start and then it warmed up quite a bit with the sun. A bit humid actually.

A redacted story about the run from Strava (edited for language):

The young woman made an abrupt turn toward the beach and directly toward a nesting goose. The gander went into full fighter jet mode. "Did you see that?!" She asked. "Yeah, they are nesting. Keep away from them."

A few laps go by . . .

A man is standing over the goose. I yell "watch it they are nesting and aggressive." "I know I am keeping my eye on him" he said (referring to the gander who was visibly upset). At which point I yelled "Well, then leave them alone." And his reply was "I am trying to take a picture."

The man was literally standing over the goose. Canadian Geese are jerks (and they are only protecting themselves), but there's no need to do that. Needless to say my HR was pretty high for the rest of the run.

Did some grading and got out earlier than I have been. Did not feel great on the ride. Likely low on calories and too much exercise. Portions were a bit painful and I was not feeling great mentally. Almost called Megan to come get me, but thought if I kept going I might feel better. I did a little bit. I kept telling myself it was a beautiful day (it was) and that I am extremely fortunate to be able to do this (I am).

I think I will be better able to deal with what is going on when school is out. Other stresses will remain, but I think I can better get my thinking organized.

Since I am doing a ton of yard work these days, the beers are really refreshing. something about having a brew after you've been digging, pruning, and putting down mulch and sod all day. This situation might be worse for everyone consuming too much, because nobody has to worry about driving. But also, this situation has to be way better for a reduction in DUIs.

The mental health has shifted more to depression early then anxiety. Never experienced them in the same day. I try to drink some coffee for energy, but then once that system wakes up the anxiety starts. Trying to figure out a better routine. It was very windy and Megan didn't really want to be out but we both decided to just get out. We went to Borden Park and explored some of the small selection of trails on offer (there at least was more than I thought).

The moron next door was raving about the fact that "I smoke weed" as if it was an indubitable fact of existence and an absolute right. He was doing so in response to the guy on the other side telling him to cut it out. If people want to smoke that's fine, but when they are so militant about it, it drives me crazy. I could hear him through the wall saying something about if he goes out on the front steps area it will be worse. It's legal in Michigan but a potential lease violation for the complex. Megan has called (because the neighbors haven't come to the door and the guy on the other side called). They won't do anything (it took them 11 days to get us heat after all), so Megan has suggested that we tell them we won't sign a temporary lease until something is done about it. I like that approach.

Megan has to talk me down from engaging him in an improper way at least once day. She's right of course, but the kid is an absolute punk (yelling and swearing at his kids, verbally abusing them).

Good that you have Megan to help calm you down, but it is still a bummer. Young, high, dumb kids who think they have life figured out...for them and to tell you how it is, argh.

Around 70, decent winds. I got pretty beat up after 2 hours and spent the next 2.5 hours feeling decent at times and terrible at others. Just needed more water and gels. I ran out of gels, but still had two and I took some dates with me. Those worked quite well but don't have sodium.

I had spaghetti for both meals today. I cannot recall the last time I had it for lunch.

Amazon claims that it deprioritizes non-essential items. This is partly true. Beautiful day out. Sunnier than yesterday and at least as warm. I rode out to attack a Strava segment that was low hanging fruit. Yesterday I did around 20MPH for the segement and I wasn't pushing, so I figured with a push 22.4 MPH (it's only .97 miles) would be no problem even on tired legs.

I got on the bumper of an massive white SUV (standard uniform in SE Michigan) so that I could run the stop sign. After the intersection it is tar with a very gentle incline, then it turns to slight downhill on gravel. I'd say it was a 85% to 90% effort. I think I did 27 MPH. One of the faster guys will likely take it down by the end of the day tomorrow as it is a fast section and I wasn't that fast on it. It was nice to have a goal and accomplish it.

I talked to a guy who was in from out of town who was doing our Thursday Night Dirt route. I was so nice to talk to another person while riding and talking bike stuff. I am just bummed I didn't have more time and better legs to guide the route for him.

I'm in the whatever I feel like doing season mode. The weather has been terrible, so when it is really cold and windy I run. If it's nice, I ride.

Got out of bed "early" because the neighbors behind us have two kids and there's tons of pounding on the walls. I know they are kids, but we have had families back there before and barely heard them. Coupled with the people on the other side it's been rough.

I had a good run and tried to practice positive mental thinking, which I started doing yesterday. I have a lot of negative thoughts, mostly about my interactions with strangers and their behaviors, so lately I've tried to critique the negative thought and replace it with more positive thinking. I think it is helping. It seems the right thing to do anyway.

Avoiding the negative thoughts is definitely a battle. Since you run, you've battled thousands of them before, so that's a plus. Therefore the strength to be positive, proactive, and/or dismissive in the face of creeping negative thoughts is there already.

You can also always fight crime in a mask at night to relieve stress, too. I've heard good things...

Met up with my buddy Joe to do some riding and hit this week's time trial segement (COVID-19 Invitational TT - Stage 9) as I have missed the last four weeks or so. I waasn't planning on riding with anyone for a while, but I cracked. We mostly stayed away from each other (no hand shaking or anything like that). I also tried not to ride directly behind him, particularly for the segment as I didn't want to do any drafting (segments are to be done alone to encourage distancing as well as to discourage drafting).

The segment started on a gradual climb in a park on grass, which made it a bit cyclocross-y to start and to finish. It included the Dequindre hill toward the end, which made it interesting. We then road around for a longer loop and I left Joe back at Stony Creek and rode home (Megan dropped me off in the Subaru as I wanted to make dinner for her and make sure I got to the meetup point on time).

It felt really nice to not feel so isolated.

Was going to ride with Joe but I didn't get out of bed early enough (11AM, which is better than recent and I did make it to bed before 1:00, very rare). I did end up running into him to chat for just a second, which was nice. Had a chain issue, but I got it sort after a bit.

Weather was warmer and not too much wind. Lot of rain coming in, so not too much riding until Tuesday or Wednesday, but I'll run as long as it isn't thundering.

Light rain passing here and there. Around 60s. Nice actually. Decided to do some sort of workout if there weren't many people and if I could be patient with people. Worked out nicely. I was kind of undecided, but did what I used to do when we first moved here, which is to do a progression run by feel and stop whenever I felt it was necessary to cut it.

The run ended up being a cut down as I got too aggressive, but I felt quite strong.

Cooled down 3.4 miles.

Came home and had a left over piece and a half of Detroit-style pizza to which I added some smashed avocado and some blue cheese crumbles. It was amazing.

Looks like a good bit of rain the next few days, so I will likey run until the roads are dry again, which is fine with me.

Feeling much better mentally. Exercise is helping.

Quite a nice park. The trail was quite muddy in places, but there were lovely flowers and tons of little frogs. It had some slight ups and downs, which was good. I think I will try running the north trails sometime soon. It's taken me weeks to figure out that it would be a great time to do some trail running. I haven't done more than 3-4 trail runs here.

Nice and warm and slightly humid but not unbearable. Abundant sunshine. Went through 4 bottles (around 70-80 onces of fluid) and could have used a bit more. Good ride. Hit some dirt roads I haven't been on an went the farthest north I have gone. It's going to take some logistics to figure out how to do 100 miles of dirt roads. Need to carry a sandwich and some other heavier foods or find a place to pick one up ~3/4 of the way through.

Watched the protests in Detroit with Megan last night. Someone was shot a little way from the main group of protesters. Apparently a drive by, I assume unrelated to the protests. For those who think that protests like these are just some angry black folks versus the police aren't looking closely enough. People come in from other areas with many motives. Some might be just looking for some tourism, some looking to actually stand for justice, some are white supremicists looking to further solidify people's assumptions about what they think black folks do, and many others with different motives. Like much in life these thing are complex and difficult to understand in depth.

Broke out my trail shoes and went to Bald Mountain to run the trails for the first time (the north trails farther up than where Megan and I walked/hiked a few weeks ago). It was one of the best runs in recent memory. I started out not too impressed as it was supposed to be hilly and didn't see much for the first two miles and then it got fairly steep and hilly even if only for short climbs. I tried to do the full loop (about 6-7 miles) and circle back for a second loop but just ended up missing a turn, so I ran the loop backwards (in the direction of the mountain bikers). I made sure to give any mountain biker all the room they needed when I heard the wizz of a cassette. I think the guy that passed me appreciated that I was alert and he didn't even have to call out and that I moved completely off the trail.

Around 1:45 of running time and I hit some harder miles on the way back. I haven't spent this mich time on the trails since I left Philadelphia. This one works quite well for my purposes. Difficult enough without being out of my skill range (I'm definitely out of practice).

My buddy Joe texted me that he planned on 2 hours of gravel so I got in some lunch and made sure the bike was ready to go. Decided to ride to meet him after coming up with an approximate 2-hour loop. I was running a bit late as it is a little hard to time things on a bike exactly. We headed out and had a very enjoyable ride. It was hot, but never felt that bad (85-90). I dropped him back at his truck and went through Stony Creek. I died a bit around three hours after I left him and looked for a store. Somehow, there was nothing in the strip malls I passed. I stopped at a gas station a mile from where we live because I knew I wouldn't go back out as I would later see the items as not being necessities. I grabbed a slushy for the first time in who knows how long, a Gatorade, and two diet Pepsi's. I sipped my slushy on the way home and it tasted magical :-)

Just under four hours of riding time. I can't believe my legs felt as good as they did after trail running yesterday after it's been so long. Something short and easy running tomorrow and Thursday Night Dirt on Thurday.

Rough day. We talked to Issac, someone in Kenya that Megan met on a trip who we sometimes help out a bit financially. Megan ask me to get her a banana. She went back into the kitchen and I heard her fall (she's fine). She was passed out leaning against the fridge and it took her a few seconds to come to and she was very confused for several seconds, but then she straightened out. I got her some fluids and food, trying not to have a panick attack.

I took her to the ER just to be sure and they examine her and did an ultrasound. All good. Apparently this sometimes happens with pregnant women. Her blood pressure apparently dropped. Not sure if it was food related or the position of the babies. We did figure out that she must have been able to almost get down in a sitting position before she fully passed out.

First, obviously I have humidity envy.

Second, I have heard that folks have spent a lot of time on websites like zillow during the stay at home orders. When forced to stay at home, people look around, and then want a better home. My neighbor across the street sold his house in April in one day. Good luck with the house hunt.

I tried to ride to the Fall 50 route and do that, but my GPS wasn't playing nice with the preprogrammed route, so I just changed plans a bit. I think the total mileage would have been closer to 90, which would have been fine but perhaps too much time to get back at an appropriate dinner time.

We are going to look at a few houses tomorrow.

Thank you. It's a crazy market. People are paying more than asking price. In some cases I think 5-10k or maybe more. Wild times!

We looked at two houses. We loved the first one. It was the first house that felt like "We could live here." The second one we looked at was doable, but not as nice as the first.

A beautiful tie-dye looking sunset. First double since last fall I would have to guess.

Megan changed the preapproval and we signed documents to make an offer on the house.

After-dinner walk with Megan. House inspection was today. Doctor's appointment was well. I got on some meds finally. Feel pretty solid, though some of them will take a bit to kick in.

The home inspection was an amzing experience and you learn a lot about the property. Many of the areas are in great shape. A few issues we are negotiating and we are going to buy a dinning room table set from them, which we liked. Strange process, but I am learning a lot.

I started packing like a mad man. I went a few places and picked up boxes and slavaged/stole a bunch from the backs of stores. I went around at night and got some that were on a cart out back of a strip mall and they were Frito-Lay boxes, which ended up being amazing, though technically the property of Frito-Lay as they are returnable.

I just want to be ready to get out of here as soon as possible. The current owners are in Brazil, so it's a bit complicated. It is in Lake Orion/Orion Township. It's next to the elementary school and middle school and two parks. It might still be on Zillow. 2231 Silver Maple Orion Township Michigan. It's big enough and has what we want, so I don't think it will be a starter home, but time will tell. Very excited!

Thanks! It’s a lot nicer than the first ones we looked at. You’re welcome to come anytime. The timing is working out great. Lease ends August 15. I imagine we can close before August 1. I want to start moving stuff as soon as possible as I’m not doing a big truck rental. Just a small one for the last of the big stuff.

Detroit Ride with the guys. Hot but dry and early enough that everything was good. Lots of glass from the 4th festivities. Good pace 18.5-19.5 MPH and it felt comfortable on flat tar. We stopped for coffee and went I came back out the guys told me I was losing air in my rear tire and they tried to get it to seal. One of the guys helped me plug it, but I had two other punctures, so the guys helped me put in a tube. I am pretty out of practice as I think the last flat I changed was a BMX bike when I was 15-17 or so. And I used a flathead screw driver as a tire lever.

We got that settled and took off and my front tire blew right of the rim. I was able to ride on the rim and get to the edge of the road safely. The told the guys to go. They offered assistance in various forms, but I had already held them up enough, so I called Megan. I sat on a nice lawn area outside the coffee shop and soaked up the sun and some water.

We went to Griffin Claw Brewing after for a heavy lunch. It was a good day, even with the bike issues. I am still waiting to get the bike into the shop. I am afraid once I do, parts will take forever to arrive given the shortage of parts and bikes and the long lines for service. Probably going to switch back over to running until I can get that settled. I am not sure I can ride two long with the plug. I did put a tube in the front when I got home to practice changing flats a bit and got a sense of how the CO2 cartridges work.

Those air quality warnings are there for a reason for vulnerable populations. I planned to ride my bike today even though it needs to be serviced. I wanted to do a hundred miles, but here was also a email about a group ride of 66 miles. I rode to the meetup point which was around 8-9 miles away figuring 80+ would be fine. I started out at 7:20, which is very early for me in the summer. We went over some of the most hilliest portions in the area. My legs didn't want to move, but thankfully the guys were willing to do an easy ride. We went up this crazy steep and rocky seasonal road, which was both fun and very challenging (7 MPH and I was all-out effort).

Toward the end I decided that I would go back to the meetup point and get some water and go out on portions of the Thurday Night Dirt route. Doing an out and back on Paint Creek was out of the question as there are so many people out and it is flat and felt like cheating, so I hit a few more hills and headed home. I actually felt pretty solid, though tired.

1 Cliff Bar for breakfast

4 Maurten gels during the ride + 1 Cliff Bar

3 bottles of electrolytes

3 bottles of warm sink water from Paint Creek bathroom

Just under 6.5 hours moving time with less than 20' of stoppage time. I am not sure I will ever race this distance, but it is a fun challenge and should really build my endurance.

I don't think I have ever seen so many nurses and doctors. They kept her overnight for observation. I feel alseep in the room for a bit and then went home to feed the nap, feed the cats, run, grab a quick bite and headed back over to the hospital for a little while.

Asked if people knew the route and would look out for each other as I was leaving. Limped back to Tom's as the cooler was outside and had 2 ciders. Grabbed my bag and limped home. Sorry about the issues with your dad, I will keep him and you in my prayers.

Have a fun time setting up the house. Good to take a break from running and focus on something that is joyful. Understand the mental struggles, I am having a hard time dealing with them too.

Take care my friend. All my best to you and Megan. Lots of changes for your right now, hang in there. Call to chat anytime.

When is your baby due?

From Jason D on Tue, Aug 04, 2020 at 22:44:15 from 73.144.88.57

Babies. Plural :-) identical twin boys. Originally November 16 or 17, but a c-section scheduled for Oct 26. It’s easier to schedule and cancel than to schedule later if it’s necessary. I was hoping for Halloween.

Thank you for asking. Wishing you and your family well in these difficult times, Jon.

Hey, congrats. I read through a few month of your posts but didn't realize it was twins. Very exciting, and best of luck in the last trimester.

Rough one and rough day. I almost had a panic attack at mile 3 but kept running because I didn't want to be stuck away from the apartment. Not quite sure what happened. I thought I might have forgot to take meds, but I usually take them after lunch. Luckily I had a physical the next day and my doctor upped my meds.

PM: 3.3-mile walk w/ Megan. HR 77.

HR was good during the walk, but I think this might have been the night when my HR was 90-100 BPM while just sitting. Very high.

I didn't dare run. I had to fast for blood work as I never ended up going to Troy Beaumont as I was supposed to, so they took in there. I almost passed out and felt like I was going to vomit (I don't do well with blood and I don't like needles much). They were able to recline me and finish, but I broke out in a major sweat and felt awful. My hands were shaking. They gave me some water and I came around eventually. Talked to the doctor and she upped the dosage. I believe it is working, but things are so crazy right now that it cannot cure everything. They aren't miracle pills.

I was a little worried about running, but gave myself permission to go as long as I felt okay. Given how slow I have to run, this was long enough by time. Felt better as I went longer, which is more normal.

I went over to the house to drop some stuff off and take a legitimate shower. Pressure, avilability, and temperature issues the last 3-4 months in this dump of an apartment. Other than a post-marathon shower, this was likely in my top 10. I talked to some sprinkler guys who were working on an issue at our neighbors. The real estate person sunk a 4 x 4 post right through part of the sprinkler system and the pressue doesn't fully build. Called his office to see if they could get an order and do it right then, but they were out. They are going to come out next week. They also do gutters, which is great because some of them are very high up and I don't do well with heights and Megan doesn't want me up there.

Went to campus to do a few things. It was very disoriented to see it empty and students in masks (which is a good thing). It just seems very odd visually. I had a hard time in grocery stores when things first started because it seemed so apocalyptic. I'm used to it now.

After I suggested we go over to the house as Megan hasn't been since closing and I go over pretty much every day.

Slow, but felt really good. Ideal summer weather. Picked up another class at another college. The pay is less than 1/2 of what I get at Oakland, but it seemed like something I couldn't pass up.

Megan got her tenure acceptance the other day, which is security of employment and a nice raise. Of course, someone at the University announced it on Facebook and somehow missed communicating privately to Megan and others.

PM: 3.20-mile walk w/ Megan on the Polly Ann Trail from the house. HR 78.

We took a few items over to the house and went for a walk. The crossing from the main street to the trail is a bit sketchy given that it's about 45 MPH and there's a blind knoll. Might have to take the pathways to the first cross street and enter the trail that way. Not sure why they don't have some sort of signal there. We walked on the shoulder on the way back as there was more room, but it still wasn't as safe as I wanted. And people don't slow down, even for a woman who is visibly pregnant.

Good day today.

Off. Complete rest day.

Took my computer to an Apple store to get looked at. I must say the mall in Troy is absolutely amazing, but I felt foolish going there in such times as these but I have two kids on the way and just bought a house and I wanted a second opinion (Best Buy said it wasn't worth it but didn't bother to run diagnostic). I was thinking about a new computer, but I couldn't stay in the store any longer. People where lined up looking like they were going through airport security. I couldn't believe people are just out shopping, but I guess even though I felt I had a valid reason I was there too.

Megan and I went over to the house and brought some of the highly breakable glass tops for a coffee table and end table. I took a shower. I spent some time playing with the sprinkler system and learned the different zones or "stations" as they are called. Going to need to get a mower pretty soon or the HOA is going to send us notices. Need to figure out how to mow at lawn. It's been quite a long time since I have done one.

Moving day. I managed to get out of bed at a decent time (for me). Moving was slightly stressful, but the typical stress of moving (normal concern type of stuff). Megan's uncle Chaz came up from Ohio (he generously paid for the movers). It was nice to see him, as it has been some time. We went to have lunch outside in downtown Lake Orion (not pronounced like the the constellation, but Ore-e-on).

Megan and I went to th Home Depot to get a few furniture pads. It's the first time we have been in a store together for many months, though we don't often go to stores together.

I didn't feel like cooking as stuff was mostly still in boxes, so we got Mediterranean. We noticed that our favorite sushi place is back open (we haven't been checking for obvious reasons due to pregnancy though I read this varies culturally). We had a nice first nice dinner on the dinning room table we bought from the previous owners.

Went to pick up my bike but the shop missed a service request, so I left it. I went to the Home Depot to get a mower. I wrestled with trying to tie it down to my hitch-mount bike rack with rachet straps that I miraculously left from moving but couldn't get it right. Turns out it fit right it the back seat with the seats folded.

Got it home and assembled it. I've mowed about 5 times in my life and it has been years. I didn't know what to set the mower at, so I took a tape measure and measured my neighbor's lawn as there is no distinct property line and I wasn't sure how picky the HOA was (this is all VERY new to me). Managed to get it done with a few false starts.

Went to the local grocery store, which is only a mile away and make a light and healthy dinner as we have eaten take out an extraordinary amount even for pre-COVID-19 times.

The lawnmower / HOA thing made me chuckle. I live in a HOA community. I grew up here. My parents live down the street. I bought my place 15 years ago. The HOA has been pretty laid back, by comparison. The new management company has sent me letters, telling me I need to pressure wash my driveway. I get annoyed, and then think that they have no teeth, and can't do anything about it. But then eventually, I take 2 hours on a Saturday to pressure wash my driveway. Also, you start with a lawnmover, but now... Between my dad and I we have 4 weedeaters. He's too old to run them. So it's all on me. Hedge clippers, edgers, fertilizer spreaders, etc. it's coming for you.

Learned that a hot water heater has a "vacation" setting as the hot water was out last night. The previous owners were in Brazil the entire sale and I get the feeling they have been out of the house for some time. I knew it was likely a small fix as I turned on the dishwasher and Megan had taken a shower. Lots to learn, but it's quite fun (and really low stress actually).

Picked up my bike from the shop. They were busy, which was good. I told them to take care of other customers as I was flexible and could wait.

Programmed the Nest thermostat and Comcast had come earlier as we were unable to get the internet going. Managed to get those devices talking.

PM: 3.9-mile walk w/ Megan. HR 78.

We walked around the subdivision a bit and then tested some different areas to cross the road as the beginning of the trail is not well placed for traffic and visibility.

I messed with the thermostat toward the end of our walk to test the app. Digital technology is freaky but I can see how this particular instance might be useful.

Lunch/PM: 7.1 miles, averaged 13:01. HR 134.

First run from the house. Ran on the Polly Ann trail, portions of which I have ridden and a few walks with Megan. It was a strangely anxious day. I was worried about a course reduction and losing another class at another insitution that starts in a week. It would be a new course and new prep, so I was panicking. Turns out they had lower than expected enrollment and it wasn't that much money (Oakland pays 2.5 times more per class) and I could probably get a part time job and make the same amount. I was both bummed and relieved. I felt a good deal better after I had an answer either way. I just need to plan accordingly. It also means my summer is 3-4 days longer than it might have been :-)

I went to the hardware store to try to get a mortise lock to replace the one on the pation door. Much harder to install than I thought. There is some sort of internal sleeve in the door that slid down and it is making it impossible to leverage back in. I gave it a solid try. I imagine whatever I pay a locksmith or other contractor will be worth the frustration I went through. Just trying to do some of the small things when I can.

Felt better today. Looked for turtles. Spotted one. There are tons of small lakes and swampy wetlands along the trail. The first dirt road is just over a mile from our place and intersects with the trail (it eventually goes to a divided highway, but picks back up again I think).

We had an optional workshop that I attended. Went to the Home Depot for a few things after that.

PM: 3.5-mile walk w/ Megan. HR 80.

Weather today was like fall but in a good way. It's been in the 50s at night, so we have been enjoying the open windows and the sounds of the fountain in the small pond at the subdivision playground. We met some of our neighbors. I finally figured out that my car being in the driveway has alerted people to the fact that the previous owners never came back from Brazil. Nice people.

Had a good day. Still a bit of unpacking to do, but thankfully the house is almost 2.5 times larger than our apartment so there is plenty of room to move around and two bedrooms have almost nothing in them yet.

Turned off my HR screen and just ran by feel, which I generally do anyway but it's too much feedback at this point. Just kept time and distance and allowed for manual mile splits, which help me to keep a rhythm (don't really care about pace currently). I tried to guess my averaged HR for the run at 138. Pleased it was much lower. Quite dehydrated yesterday I think as this was the same route and pace and warmer weather.

PM: 3.5-mile walk/jog w/ Megan. HR 93.

Megan did great and I was very happy she still wanted to go out. It's easy to skip exercise, and especially easy to do so when you are 6+ months pregnant. We had a good day. Feeling extremely fortunate and trying to focus on all our blessings.

Yesterday I figured out that we start a week later than I thought we did, so I have some more time to get settled in and get the house in order (it's already very livable and comfortable).

I will likely take the gravel road (Greenshield). Either way I need to cross M-24 to get to Thursday Night Dirt. I ended up riding down the shoulder/right turn lanes and it wasn't fun/not sketchy even with 55 MPH traffic (and it's Michigan so speeds exceed that).

Doing ok?

From Jason D on Wed, Sep 30, 2020 at 12:05:53 from 73.161.42.48

Doing okay, Jeff. Trying my best to do a lot of different things and I am having a hard time adjusting, but I am getting there. Need to get back on a regular exercise plan to balance me.

Lunch: 2.7-mile jog. HR 141.

This was the week I tried to establish a pattern of lunch runs, but it didn't take. I have the time, but I just having been getting out. The semester is busier than usual, but still very manageable at this point. It's going to be ridiculous at the end of October when the boys arrive.

PM: 1.3-mile walk w/ Megan.

We got in 30', which was good. Twin 1 is really causing her pain and it isn't getting better nor will it most likley.

Mowed the lawn because I guess that is what homeowners do on the weekends. I actually enjoy doing it. It's not a big yard. Maybe an 1/8 to not quite a 1/5 of an acre or so? Nice trees and wetland area directly off the back deck though. Most lots in subdivisions around here seem like that's the size they chunk everything into. It's enough for the kids to move around when they get older.

Planned materials for the week. It makes for a busy Sunday, but during the week it's mostly responding to student emails as timely as possible and grading smaller assignments. Not so bad really. I do some school stuff, I do some domestic stuff. I make dinner. I try to keep our much larger space picked up, but it's tough when Megan cannot help. I'm trying to wait on her hand and foot. I panic here and there. I have too much to drink. I refocus on the priorities.

Only 2.5 more weeks. I'm excited and terrified. Trying to get as much done as possible, but we have a lot of stuff from people, which was very generous. I put the car seats in Megan's new car and assembled the changing table.

You reminding me of these moments makes me smile. Not at your pain, but just thinking back to when I was there.

Do what you can. Let God handle the rest. It will all be fine, man.

Megan has an appointment around 7:30AM and her blood pressure was quite high for a prolonged period of time, so they decided to do an emergency C-section. The boys were born at 2:51 and 2:52.

Welcome to the world Charles Wallace Dodge (4lbs 14 oz) and Sawyer Graham Dodge (5 lbs 2 oz).

Sawyer had to go into the NICU pretty quickly as he wasn't breathing normally on his own (something that happens with early twins). Charlie was fine for a while, but then had to go in as well. They improved a good deal over night and as of Wednesday morning are doing fine breathing on their own. We went in to hold them as Megan really didn't get so interact with or hold Sawyer yesterday. I saw him and visited him, but  haven't held him yet.

I stayed at the hospital last night after coming home to check on the cats. The boys were doing well. Megan might be there until Satursday and it all depends on how the boys are progressing for when they are coming home, but things look promising.

I'm staying at home tonight to feed the cats and make sure they don't get too off schedule and weirded out before the boys come home and their life really starts to get interesting :-)

Working on school work and making revisions to Megan's classes and answering her students' emails. I told them to just email me as I am working on the same materials.

PM: 30' @ 142 BMP (13:10).

Decided to jog today. Felt great to get out.

It's been an exciting and eventful and difficult few weeks. My mom, sister, and niece drive out around Thanksgiving, which was nice and our friend came in early December. Mental health has been rough, but that is mostly do to my escalating alcoholism. It's been a pretty slippery slope since March and reached unprecedented heights over the last few weeks. It's irresponsible when you don't have kids, it's something altogether awful when you have children, especially young ones. I am writing this the day after Christmas. I am going to try to make today my first sober day since early March and work on giving it up altogether. There might come a time when I can enjoy a drink at dinner or at a party when things settle out with the virus, but that's not working right now.

Megan and I are working on getting a treadmill and an elliptical. My course load was up in the air for a while (I did not deal well with that well), so we had to hold off, but my dad gave us a bunch of money, so I think we are going to put it toward some equipment. My course load is normal for now, but it is unclear what will happen in the future.

Megan likes running on treadmills, and I think with the right setup I can get used to it. Going to be a tight fit in the basement, but I think if necessary I can get a contractor to reroute and restablize some joists for a bit of head clearance.

I've missed the blog.

We have missed you too. Lots of changes in your life this year and lots of challenges. I am praying for you and please know you have a friend if you need anything. You are strong and can handle this life and the adventures and challenges.

The blog misses you too, Jason.

I can relate about the drinking. Once all things schedule ended, there was all this free time. I could decide to fill it with productive things (and actually, sometimes I did). But mostly, I felt bored. So I drank beer. I've been thinking about taking a break, too. But that seems destined for failure these few days before new years eve, and my 50th birthday.

Don't beat yourself up about it too much. 2020 has done a lot of damage. You can't undo what has been done, but your comeback in 2021 is going to be legendary!

PM: 30' on TrainerRoad (Volunteer). HR 134.

I've been getting up early and bringing one of the boy down to feed them, putting the monitor on and waiting for the other one to wake up so Megan can get some more sleep (we both do feedings at night, but sometimes it's not evenly split). It feels nice to be up at a decent hour to hang out with the boys, who end up sleeping again before too long. I use the time to have some green tea, watch the news, and get some work done or clean the kitchen.

No booze today. I do have beer in the fridge and in the garage, which I take as progress. Typically if I have anything and I'm in the mood, I drink it. If I had any hard stuff that would likely be different. Getting my healthy eating back on track and I feel really good.

Pretty good day. Got up around 7:00 or so with the boys. They were circumsized yesterday, which was pretty worrisome, but we have a fantastic doctor and the boys were amazing. Sawyer apparently started to fall asleep during the procedure :-) They were great in the evening and in the night and throughout the day.

Good nutrition today. Some overeating and snacking, but nutrionionally dense meals otherwise.

No booze today. Some irrability, but nothing major or prolonged. Got a few naps in here and there as I have been flying on adrenaline and green tea and happiness at the change in how I feel mentally and wanted to make sure I didn't fall flat on my face.

Charlie started smiling today.

Rewatching Breaking Bad, which I had started last February when I started out on the trainer. I mounted our old TV when I bought a new one this fall. Ordered a fan and a stand for my computer.

Good day, but quite tired. I was with the boys a good portion of the day as Megan has a few deadlines before the semester starts in a week. I went to the Home Depot for some fire extinguishers because I realized that we didn't have any and they are kind of important. Delivery didn't seem like much of an option. We've been ordering groceries for some time so my in-store stops have been limited to CVS and the ocassional, very quick grocery item or two.

No booze today. I can't remember the last time I went 5 days. Certainly not since we moved to Michigan and I doubt since we have been married, though we did well in Philadelphia to not drink during the week (most weeks anyway).

Got Sawyer to smile today. Poor kid. He inherited my huge head.

Got up with the boys and hung out. We had a pretty quiet day and watched the live stream of Jason Isbell's concert once I figured out how to put it on the TV. We had a light dinner and I went to bed around quarter of one. The boys slept from 12:00 or so to 5:15 for the second night in a row.

My first sober New Year's Eve since I was probably 16? 17? Definitely since 15. That was 2000. I'll be 36 in 3 weeks. Megan cheers me with her wine. I had some ginger and tumeric tea I made. It's nice and spicy and I like to drink it by the gallon, but that combined with the lemon in too large a quantity kills my throat and tongue. It's amazing stuff though.
