Short-Term Running Goals:

-Find some good local races to run that will motivate me to stay in shape.

Long-Term Running Goals:

-Run a few fast marathons. Grandma's, St. George, and Boston are on my target list.

-Stay fit for a very long time. I believe what goes into making a competitive runner at age 60 is much different than age 20, just like what goes into making a good marathoner differs from a good sprinter. I hope that by taking care of my body, I can be very fast for my age as I get older.

Apparently 7:01 pace, but I felt worse today than yesterday. That can happen after a big race effort. Intended to do farmers fields but I took a different route home because there were some gross sewage/agricultural smells on the way out.

7:04 pace, I didn't fall flat but I did feel flat on east river flats. The AQI was fine but I think it's that time of year when sometimes the air just kind of smells bad.

Ran from WBOB this afternoon after camping today. I felt pretty weak due to glycogen issues, its weird how I probably ate too late and because of that, I felt super hungry on my run. On the bright side, it was beautiful to run on a sunny afternoon as the leaves are starting to turn yellow. Also, it was like 86 degrees but didn't feel at all that bad.

6:38 pace on Como ave, around the lake, and to the bottom of the Wheelock hill and back. Felt pretty week and tired still. Hot morning for October but it wasn't bothersome.

6:55 pace, west river north. It was colder today but didn't use gloves. Definitely felt a little quicker and better than last week. Still, I wonder when my knee will be fully, completely out of the woods.

At 35 degrees, this was by far the coldest morning of the season so far. Today may have been my last real workout of the year as well. I did 6xK w/ 1 minute rest on my Cleveland/Roselawn route only where it is nice and flat, just like my upcoming race will be. Ran 3:09, 3:02, 3:02, 3:00, 3:01, 3:00. The way back felt easier each time. I felt a little gassed at first but am happy with it overall.

Missed getting my pace on Diagonal / St A parkway. But I felt fine. It was a nice morning and the air was cleaner than it sometimes is on that route. Sometimes, an ideal run means you don't really think about the run during the run.

6:20 pace on a pretty mindless jaunt to Resevoir woods. Randomly ran into a race (of sorts) being held in resevoir woods actually.

7:03 pace, east river flats. That pace is expected after fasting. Congratulations to former blogger Conner Mantz on breaking the American marathon record yesterday. Got out at ~6:45 today and it was pretty dark. I'll get an extra hour at daylight savings but hope that I can make it until then without it getting too dark on my runs.

Ran down Como ave to Como lake, then on the way back, I did 3x800 by the fairgrounds. Was raining at times but had let up by this workout which was intended to be minor. Ran 2:31 (warming up), 2:29 (uphill), and 2:22.

I guess you could say we lucked out on weather at Victory for the third straight year. I think it's been 50+ degrees each time I've done it, although today I was smart enough to remember how much colder I feel before races, so I wore 4 layers to packet pickup. I was feeling pretty lethargic and out of it during my warm up, which I've found says little more about how my race will go than whether I got a good sleep the night before. At the start of the race, a pack of four quickly dwindled to three. We hit 1 mile at 5:07 which felt about the appropriate pace and I thought: "oh, it's going to be one of THOSE races". However, mile 2 was a 4:42, which changed my mind on things- it was just a matter of someone likely messing up the mile markers. Miles 3 and 4 were in 10:01. During this time I moved into 2nd place and started to make a gap while the leader slowly built a gap on me. My last two full miles were (apparently) 4:53 and 4:49. Overall, I ran 30:33 and finished 2nd. Thoughts: 1) I'm proud of that time! That's 11 seconds faster than I ran last year, and my second fastest 10K road race ever. 2) 2nd place. I can hardly believe it. I have run six local 10Ks the past three seasons (Get in Gear and Victory three times each). I have finished in second place FIVE TIMES behind 4 unique winners. That is quite the track record (not to mention my 3rd, 2nd and 2nd place finishes at the Freedom run before that). As I thought about that leading up to the race, I wondered if it was simply a mental barrier. Although I finished just 11 seconds behind first place today, I do feel like I pretty much pushed it all I could though. 3) When I saw the age of 29 on my bib, I felt really old. Interestingly, I was the youngest runner in the top 5. There were only 2 other guys in their 20s in the top 10, which you had to run 32:XX to be in. Kudos to others for keeping up their fitness. Overall, I'm proud of my work today and happy to end what has been a unique season on a positive note.

7:01 pace, west river north on my first run of the offseason. Got out at 6:50 and it was so dark! Didn't really see the sun until I was about halfway home. Caught leaf #3 of the season.

6:58 pace, como classic. I headed out probably around 7, and the sunrise wasn't until 7:38. Given how dark it was, combined with it having rained yesterday and there being leaves on the ground, it probably wasn't a good idea to take the soft surface trail, but I did and it turned out ok. I just have to make it another week and a half before I daylight savings!

Just under 7 minute pace, west river road. Left at 6:50, it was so dark! It was uncomfortably dark even by the time I got to the winchell trail section of the run. Daylight savings here we come.

5:56 pace, Gateway trail to Brown's creek. You really couldn't ask for a much nicer run. It was a cloudy day with drizzles on and off and the leaves looked really good. I think by even next week the trees will be much more bare. Splits don't really matter, but I ran: 4:05, 6:11, 6:11, 5:58, 6:00, 6:26, 5:33, 5:37, 3:03, 3:06, 5:51, 5:53, 6:27, 6:04, 6:03, 5:56, 5:51, 3:48. Had the wind at my back and more downhill on the way out.

6:47 pace on the way back from Como classic. I left at 6:50, nearly an hour before sunrise. At that point, my hope to make it on the soft surface trail was based entirely on the lights of night. This turned out to be too much to ask, and I pulled off at Coffman. If owls are still hooting and you are scared by movements that are almost for sure just squirrels, you should probably be running somewhere else.

For the third time this year, I went on a run after a medical appointment. This was the second time I used being in the Roseville area as an excuse to do an easy run towards Tony Schmidt park, and it worked out great- it was more light than it would have been when I left otherwise, and I was able to get in and out of my appt just in time to run and get back on time for preschool. 6:43 pace on a gray day where we just missed a rain storm. I was able to explore some additional trials that turned out to be Chatham trails park. Saw several bucks today.

I again avoided running in the dark, going this afternoon for a couple reasons. It was a really nice sunny day to do farmers fields. I was fast from the get-go and ran it in 6:34 pace (61:30). But my knee hurt a bit and I overall just wasn't feeling good. I think it takes a bit of getting used to to run in the afternoon.

Another fast run at 6:40 pace, somewhat foggy day on Diagonal/St A parkway. Maybe I am feeling the lack of workouts or something. I remember once saying that here most of the leaves are gone by the start of Novemeber. Either this year is different or I was wrong, because in my opinion the trees are basically at peak levels of color, even though some have completely shed.
