Short-Term Running Goals:

-Find some good local races to run that will motivate me to stay in shape.

Long-Term Running Goals:

-Run a few fast marathons. Grandma's, St. George, and Boston are on my target list.

-Stay fit for a very long time. I believe what goes into making a competitive runner at age 60 is much different than age 20, just like what goes into making a good marathoner differs from a good sprinter. I hope that by taking care of my body, I can be very fast for my age as I get older.

Personal:

I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. I live in the Twin Cities with my family and am an Epidemiology PhD Student. Running is the only hobby I have time for :)

7:31 pace on a tired day on Coal Mine. I actually ran a good deal fast coming back uphill, which shows how slow we started.

6:40 pace, ran on RoxyAnn. 3 loops is almost 1900 feet elevation gain. Felt tired at the outset, hopefully the weekend helps. 6 flat pace coming down the hill portion, 6:15 pace on my last loop.

This morning we went to Black Bear diner, so I had to wait patiently without eating anything so I could then do my run. I got a good deal though as I got to sample a few blackberries on the bike path. Starting on the flat was nice. After the blackberry thing, I decided I just couldn't leave Medford without doing a little workout on that trail. So I ran 2 miles (the only 2 remaining with markers) as a hard tempo, and did it in 9:44. Temps did not feel that bad.

7 flat pace for my last run in Medford. After years of living in Medford, I discovered a route upgrade, wherein you run along a trail on Larson creek such that the trail running starts close to Albertson's. This is great for hot days.

I was welcomed back to the Twin Cities with a grey and humid day in the aftermath of a storm. Once again I was reminded why I like to run in the morning, even if my body feels up to running otherwise (which it was). 6:51 pace, farmer's fields.

6:55 pace, west river north. I have a blister on my big toe which I hope is not related to these shoes. It makes me miss my Triumph 20s. Today was warm but will be a lot cooler than what is in store for the next few weeks.

6:58 pace, Diag / St. A parkway for one of the last times. Some moleskin helped my blister a bit.

6:12 pace, west river road. This route is always horrible to map on MapMyRun, and I feel like I might finally be "breaking up" with that awful website as FootPath (which I've been testing for about a week) did pretty well. I did a 54321 workout. This was probably my hottest LR yet this year.

7 flat pace, east river flats. The heat didn't feel as bad as it might have. That route is thankfully quite shaded.

6:54 pace, Como classic. I should be thankful because despite leaving a 8:30 or something, the run was not particularly unpleasant despite it probably nearing 80 degrees by when I returned.

Right as I was coming inside, I noticed "squishy shoes" for the first time this year. After my workout, I jogged to the shade of the soft surface trail before resting, and when I did, I felt like I was just glowing with heat. After cold ice water, a cold shower, a cold breakfast, standing in front of cold AC, it has still taken a couple of hours to feel my body temp come back down. My workout today was the same thing I did on 8/13/25- 3 Falcon Heights blocks of 3:3, 2:2, 1:1 float:hard, always starting on float. I ran 10:23, 10:27, and 10:36. That makes for 5:26 pace overall, 5 seconds slower than I ran last year. I was dissapointed to see that, as well as to have run so much slower on the last rep when I actually spent more time running "on" than the other two laps. It may be a combination of dehydration and heat getting to me, as well as what I've noticed this year is a lack of endurance in workouts. This was the last major workout before a possible race, so I will go in with less confidence than I would have liked to have had.

Smoke day 1. The smoke was so bad that I considered running after work out of concerns for pollution infiltration. Thankfully, they have an air purifier in there and during the summer it's actually nice that they blocked the windows from being open so people can't do that. Interestingly, on a day as hot as today, I actually came home less sweaty than I would have if I ran outside.

6:20 pace, west river road. It was hot so I ran directly to WRR and then along each of the side paths all the way to the Minnehaha water fountain in hopes of escaping the sun. Felt worn out, perhaps by the sun.

6:57 pace on my first run in my new place! I haven't done much running in the Prospect Park area, but it is kind of nice in the summer. One thing I didn't anticipate was how much hillier my runs will be. Obviously you have to get back up the final hill but the Prospect Park area is also pretty hilly, and the new route puts it so you run on the hilliest portion of east river road.

Second day at our new place. Finally we are getting a reprieve from the heat so getting started at 9:45 or so wasn't too much of an issue. I did the Reservoir woods run that I had planned. I'm not sure how often I will do this. It is definitely very fun to explore the Res woods area; today I ran through some small trails I hadn't been on much before. It is a really beautiful place. On the other hand, it feels like a bit of a drag to run so far along Roselawn and not get there until 4 miles in. Averaged 6:46 pace, including 6:30 pace coming back due to a 8,8,4 workout I did that ended up being more like 8,4,4,4 due to a stop light.

6:50 pace, Como lake loop. On Day 3 of running from my new place, I got to run in real live sub-60 degree temps. Unfortunately, I woke up absolutely roasted after a long day yesterday, and the fatigue carried over onto my run. Hopefully I can get things under control by race day. The route itself could use a modificaiton here or there, but if it works out, it'll be the first commonly used loop run I've had since moving to MN.

Well, that was a day. It was my first race of 2026.

The good: We were under a heat warning. It felt damp outside but thankfully it was overcast for the entire race. Honestly it could have been a lot worse. However, I talked to some of the top guys afterwards who felt it affected their race as none of us ran as well as we expected. I did look up the weather from my last time at this race, and although it was sunny, it was about 10 degrees cooler, which would have made a big difference. 1.5 minutes difference? Doubt it. But still. Also, it made for an absolutely gorgeous run through the Hudson area. I really love running out there.

The bad: I have run 4 half-marathons prior to today, each one was a PR and more importantly, each one was a 1:06. Today I couldn't even manage 1:07. I was really hoping to get 1:06:59 at least for the Bjorklund's sake.

The ugly: Those mile markers were truly horrific. I will write my "splits" here for the purposes of entertainment. At some point I realized they were truly completely unreliable. 5:02, 5:36, 4:49, 5:15, 5:47, 5:40, 4:12, 5:15, 6:18, 3:52, 5:28, 5:02, 6:00 (final 1.1). 3:52 are you kidding me???
