15 miles tonight as I attempted to do the 1000m big workout. What a bust this was. I found out I'm don't have what it takes to do 1000m repeats. We have had three big 1000m workouts this summer and I only made it through one of them... However this has been one of the most physically challenging work weeks ever for me. So the odds of me doing a great workout tonight after a long couple days of working down in Mesquite were very low.

I talked Mik'L into coming along on the bike. So we started up at the top of the trail where in comes out into the housing development by the river. I warmed up for 4.5 miles down to the restroom by the DC and had a potty stop then started the Tinman tempo of 2 miles. We hit that in 11:53 and that took us down by Bloomington GC and I had to "Go" again so we went down a little farther to the bottom of the trail to hit the porta potty. The I started the 1000's from there back up the trail. I hit the first one pretty hard trying to get a feel for how this would work as I just had to keep an eye on the garmin and stop when it showed .64- I hit the first one in 3:13. Then we worked up to a spot where Mik'L could sit while I did the rest of them up and back. I started the 2nd one and it felt hard as now it was dark and finding a pace was beyond me. I got pushed off the trail by three bikes who wouldn't share and all but stopped- but I finished on out to hit a 3:23. Now back down for the 3rd one. The trail was clear and I should be able to really start to roll... I felt like I was working my brains out and I hit a 3:25. That's all folks! I really felt like this workout was starting to do more harm than good and I was done. Did I ever mention how much I hate speed work? Well I do.

We still had a good journey just to get back to the car and I stuck it into 7:00 min pace back up the trail. I was frustrated and mad but more than anything I was just wore out. I was glad to have Mik'L along side because it would have been too much for me to be down there alone and to have fallen apart like that. I don't think I'll ever start another 1000m workout again in my life.

Well, I guess intervals aren't for everyone. Unfortunately part of training is trial and error. You probably do better off of long tempos and mileage alone.

Like you said, you were coming into the workout with other stresses on your mind. I've found that sometimes doing a hard workout like intervals can be a good way to relieve the stress, but if things don't go good then you feel even worse than when you started. However, in the large scheme of things this was just one workout, and you put forth much more effort than most people would. Things will be just fine.

Paul- I'm not sure what it is with me and these 1000's. I actually did a great workout the first time we did them and then ever since it's been like pulling teeth. The mile workouts we did were hard but I was able to bare down and do it. So your right it's all trial and error. I'm guessing for me and marathon training mile repeats are the shortest distance I should mess with... and I really love the longer tempos stuff.

What kind of work did you do all week. Because that definitely seemed to pay a big factor in your workouts. You almost always do well in every work. I think you just have a fatigue factor setting in with all the hard training leading up to SGM.

What are your next two week Mileage and training goals going to be?

From Superfly on Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 12:30:46

Kory- we were installing some artificial grass in a back yard. It came in a 1000 pound roll that me and one other guy had to muscle around, cut up, and instal in the heat down there.

The next couple weeks I'll do 75, and 55 miles respectively.

From wheakory on Fri, Sep 19, 2008 at 13:42:14

There you go Clyde that's why your body is fatigued. Doing the additional workload that your not used to on a week to week basis with the high mileage will put stress on the body and cause tried muscles and fatigue.

I would make sure your eating more and hydrating well with the additional work your doing.

I will target 70 next week. I might hit around 100 this week which I was only planning on 90 but I need to get some type of long run tomorrow in. Since I'm already at 84 miles this week, and 6 miles won't cut it tomorrow I need more than that.

Funny, I hate long hard tempo stuff, but like intervals. Maybe that's a poor man's barometer for how much slow twitch vs. fast twitch we are carrying around. I know I'm more fast twitch.
