| | It's starting to get hot here in Mesa. I left from work for the long run home at 6pm. After 5 miles I had to stop. I was running slower than my usual pace, and I think that hurt me. I fartleked the rest of the way home. |
| |
| | I haven't ran in over a week. Shame on me. But I did buy a road bike Monday, and I've been riding that to and from work for 8 miles one way. I'll have to get out and run tonight after the bike ride home. So 5 miles on a bike Monday, 16 yesterday, and 16 today. |
| |
| | 1 hour and 42 minutes and 35 seconds. Way to much for my first day back! I'm so sore. |
| |
| | Easy mile and a half. 13 min. 8 sec. |
|
| |
30 minutes 10 seconds for the run.
18 miles on the bike. |
|
| | 42 minutes 49 seconds.
Harder than I thought. But I'm alright with it considering my awful diet as of late, and I haven't been running in forever.
Did I mention how hot it is at 10pm? Over 100 still. At least there was no sun to beat down on me. |
|
| |
11 minutes 54 seconds. 10:15pm. 95 degrees.
6 miles on the bicycle today. |
| |
| |
I don't know the exact time, but it was around 39 minutes. I saw Doug and Lisa Tueller.
16 miles on the bicycle. |
|
| | 13.6 miles on the bicycle. It started to rain and I got caught in a microburst. |

| | 29 mile bike ride. I've never ridden that far before. (Is that correct grammar?) It was fun. I went up Power past Las Sendas and around Usery Pass. That was a killer climb. I got about 3 miles from home when I blew a tire. They're both flat now. |

| | What an intense work out! I attended spin class for the first time tonight. In my preparation for this weekend's triathlon I was invited to come to spin class. It wasn't at all what I expected. I thought I was going to learn how to make the transistions from the water to the bike and then from the bike to running. I was told to bring my shoes, a towel, and my bike. And if I didn't have a trainer, he would have some extras. I soon learned that a trainer was something you hook your bike up to so you can just sit there and pedal without moving. First we did a warm up which consisted of pedaling with just one foot. I couldn't do that. I'm pretty sure most people had the shoes that screw to their pedals. Then we started the real work out. We pedaled for 10 minutes. At times we would stand up and pedal. Then we would get up and run around the building for 5 minutes. We did this 4 times. I ran around the building 13 times, so I figure that computes to about 2.47 miles (according to GoogleEarth.) I feel good, but it was intense. I hope I didn't push it too hard, but I think I'm all right. Afterwards I did get to talk the winner of last year's race, and he told me how the race works. Now I just have to worry about swimming. |

Chances for Children Triathlon (3.1 Miles) 00:40:53, Place overall: 108, Place in age division: 7 | | My first triathlon! It was a lot harder than I thought. First of all, I'm not a strong swimmer. At all. I estimated I could do the 400 yd swim in 9 and a half minutes. It took me 9 minutes and 9 seconds, and I almost drowned. Well, I got half way through my second lap and thought I couldn't go on. I took some time to catch my breath and I managed to finish. I estimated it would take me 48 minutes to cycle 12 miles. It took me about 44. Then I thought I could do the 5k easily enough in 26 minutes, but I was spent. It took a little over 40 minutes! I'm almost too embarrassed to post it, but I was soooo tired. And it was soooo hot. But overall it was a good experience. My wife wants me to do another one, but I think I need to practice a LOT on the swimming. I'm just glad I didn't die. Normally I don't race on Sundays, but I could've swore when I signed up that it was on Saturday. I didn't want to be out 80 bucks so I took a chance on competing without the Lord's blessing. No offense to anyone who thinks the Sabbath is on Saturday. And to those that I just offended because I mentioned God, sue me. |

I have come to the conclusion that I have a thorn in my toe. I thought I cut my toe when I did the triathlon a few weeks ago. I haven't been able to run on it since because it hurts so bad. Examining it after the race, it looked like a puncture wound. I've been waiting for it to stop hurting, but it hasn't. There isn't any pus, which is what I would expect if there was something still in there, hence me thinking I just stepped on something. But there has to be something in there. I guess I'll start digging around with a needle. If anyone wants to see a grown man cry...

Yes, that's right. I did run today. My toe feels good. I think my body has absorbed the splinter. Either that or it worked its way into my circulatory system and is going to find its way to eventually pierce my heart and I'll die. |

I meant to run this distance Saturday, but I was too lazy to do it in the morning and never got a chance in the evening. I still wanted to do it because I have the Rim Country Challenge Half Marathon this Saturday (while everyone else is doing SGM.) I need to make sure I can even run the distance. I felt pretty good even though I was very thirsty. I even got to the point where I talked myself into picking up any bottle of liquid laying on the side of the road for a few swigs. The first one I saw was a beer bottle, so I passed that up. Then I saw a jug of Arizona Green Tea, so I passed that up. Then I saw a Coca-Cola bottle, and I passed that up. On the WOW scale, they were getting better, but I decided to just man up and wait 'til I got home. Now the plan is to taper down to 3 miles a day until Friday. Then I'll run a couple of miles in Payson to try and acclimate to the higher elevation. Then Saturday's the race. Hopefully I just miss the first session only of General Conference. |

Rim Country Challenge Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 02:21:27
This was quite the challenging course. I started off pretty good. I was in 30th place after the first mile. There were rolling hills for the first four or five miles. I thought it was fun at first. The hills started to become a little more pronounced. Still I felt good. Then mile 7 came along and with it, the "hill". I started trotting up it at a nice gait, but at about the halfway point I found that I could walk up faster than I was running. It also helped to stretch my legs out. But the damage had been done. From then on, every little hill felt like a mountain. Luckily, the last half of the race was mostly downhill. The only thing that kept me going was seeing Camille's orange Ragnar shirt not too far behind me. Soon my only objective became to beat Camille. (Sad, but true.) I think she let me win so that my coworkers wouldn't scorn me to shame.
Well, I think I'm done with half marathons for a while. I'd like to try some 10k's and some 5k's. My next race is a triathlon. End of report. |
| |
| | Went running with Ginger this morning. She did great! |
| |
| | First I rode my bike for 15.56 miles (appr. 56 min. - 16.7 mph). There was a very strong head wind for the first half, but some dude passed me like I was standing still. I saw another guy riding on the opposite side of the road. I turned around at Warner and reeled him in. Then I jumped off and ran for 2.94 miles (appr. 24 min. and 23 sec. - 8:18min/mi). That's actually the fastest I've run my little loop, I think. I'll have to go back and look. That's very encouraging for me with my upcoming triathlon. |

My shins were really tight this morning. I tried to turn that into a positive because I haven't done any hill training, and I know there's quite a bit of hills I have to worry about in my upcoming race. I was hoping if I push through the pain of tight shins it would simulate pushing up hill. |

Inspired by Marion:
The picture on the left was taken in Jan. 2007. The picture on the right was taken Mar. 2007. I lost 42 lbs. in 8 weeks when my work did a biggest loser contest. Naturally, I won and to the victor went the prize of $450 big ones!
I should go on another diet. I haven't lost any since, but now that I'm exercising all the time I am maintaining the weight loss. I've heard each pound you lose is equivalent to 5 minutes faster for a marathon. |

My legs were really sore this morning. I couldn't even hardly touch my toes when I stretched out beforehand. I thought for sure I was running 9 minute miles. I guess I was only running a little slower than I have been. Maybe that's a good sign. We'll see how I feel tomorrow. |

My legs didn't feel nearly as sore as they did yesterday. I took a little longer to stretch out. Maybe that helped. All the sit-ups I've been doing lately have me feeling like I'm going to puke. That gives me an idea for a scientific break-through in weight loss. Eat as much as you want, then puke it up before it digests! It could change the world!

Distance: 8.75 miles. I got a flat and Mike Ambrosio picked me up.
This newspaper clipping is from 1991. Here are the things you need to know about it: 1. Look at my perfect running form coming across the finish line. 2. Check out my genetically huge calfs. All McCumbers have them. 3. Look at that mop on my head. My hair was always so long in high school because I always had track or cross country practice after school and a meet on Saturday. I wouldn't let my dad cut it because he would always buzz it. 4. The sweet farmer tan. No, that's not a problem with the film. That's actually how white my legs were/are. 5. See the mini van in the background? I had to drive that to school every day. I had to take all my brothers and sisters, their friends, and their friends' brothers and sisters to early morning seminary. Thankfully my brother totalled our hideous 12 passenger van the year before. 6. As you can see in the caption, I set the course record. That record still stands today. It doesn't matter that it hasn't been run since, what's important is that it still stands today! |

I rode my bike 11.12 miles this morning. I had about a 2 min. rest and then off and runnin'. I'm doing just under what I'll be doing next week when I do the triathlon (12 and 3.1 miles). The problems are I haven't been in a pool since my last triathlon, and I know there are some significant hills to which I haven't trained at all for. I'm still optimistic. I know I'll do better than last time. |
| |
| | I did not time myself this morning. My intent was just to take a nice leisurely jog so as to not work myself too hard before the race. I'm not sure if that's really a good idea though. It seems that the slower I go, the more bouncy I get, and the more my tremendous girth tends to damage my joints. But I feel good now, so no worries. |

Dick Tomlin's Spirit of Triathlon (3.1 Miles) 00:28:57, Place overall: 41, Place in age division: 5
It was good to be back in my old stomping grounds. I know those hills are still growing because they weren't that steep when I was in high school. The race didn't start until 10:30, but I got there a little after 8am because I wanted to see the 5k. I found out that they were starting the 5k and the triathlon at the same time this year. I saw Juana Diaz who was bummed because every year she does both the 5k and the triathlon. I also saw professional triathlete Kate Ellis. She was nice, but I don't think she likes her celebrity status (or she's just real humble.) I also saw my Athlinks.com buddy Kimberly Slocum. She and Dan Springborn won the race last year, so I had my wife take my picture with them. They said, "Don't you want a picture with this year's winner?" I said, let me preface this with saying that this was before the race, "I'll take a picture with Kate next." I don't think Kate finished the race, though. I heard she crashed or something. Not sure. Dan won again. And I'm not sure if Kim was the overall woman's winner. I'll have to wait until the official results come out.
The race started at the pool right next to my old high school. I was the 51st person to start. They start the participants every 20 seconds. You swim in the 35 yard long pool 3 times back and forth in a serpentine style, get out at the other side, run to the entrance point again, and swim it again. I'm a horrible swimmer. I never even put my head under the water. And with all the swimmers going back and forth, the waves kept going in my mouth. I was pretty water logged by the time I finally paddled my way through.
Then it was out of the pool and on to the bike. Did I mention how windy Kingman is? Well, it's pretty windy, and it was cold coming out. But I was so pooped that I didn't notice too much. Side story: the cutest part of the day was during the kids tri when this little two year old came out of the pool with his little life jacket on and cruised over to the bike transition area. Back to my report:
The bike was fun even though it was extremely hard. The first few miles I was still trying to catch my breath from the swim. We ride three miles out and three miles back twice. The ride out is mostly uphill, a few rolling down. A couple of times I was riding in the lowest gear I had just to keep myself moving. But that made coming back all the more fun. I seriously love going that fast on my bike. It was awesome. The wind was blowing tears in my eyes even though I had my glasses on. I got passed twice, but I passed about 6 or 7 people. I don't know how some people are so fast on their bikes. Well, my bike isn't the best, but still. There was one hair-pin turn right before the freeway underpass where I saw a girl biff it. I felt bad for her, but I think she was all right. I don't think it was Kate. One of the coolest things was having my entire family (mom, mother-in-law, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, and my family) rooting me on.
I got off the bike, took a swig of Gatorade, and was off and running. I should say jogging, because I didn't want to go out too fast and crash like I usually do. The strategy paid off because I was able to finish strong. I passed three girls right at the end. In your faces females!
My time was about 3 minutes slower than my last tri, but I'm happy because this was a much harder course for all three parts. Even Dan Springborn's time was 3 minutes slower than the last one. But being that the overall winner is in my age division, it hurts my chances at medaling. Oh well. It's all for fun. I think I'll do some duathlons from here on out. |

| | I took Ginger out with me this morning. She enjoyed it, but she pooped again. Who would think a dog running that fast could do that? But I guess when you gotta go, you gotta go. I totally forgot to bring a bag with me and then I forgot to go back and pick it up, so it's still there in the middle of the sidewalk. I asked my sister to go get it and she freaked out. Whatever. |

After my race last Saturday, we cleaned out my mom's storage shed. I found this picture from the 6th grade (1985.) |

Time: 23:29 (7:59 pace) new record!!
It's funny how fresh you feel and how well you can run after some rest. I'm sure I'll be feeling it tomorrow and will not be able to run quite as fast. I am a firm believer though that consistency is better. If I were more consistent, my times would be better, but they wouldn't be as drastic of a drop. Does that make sense? In other words, if I was running every day, I might shave off a few seconds off my pace each day. In a week I could shave off 15 seconds for example. But if I take a week off, and I'm feeling fresh, I might shave off 10 seconds, but it seems more drastic because it happens all at once instead of 2 or 3 seconds a day. |

Time: 23:15 (7:54 pace) new record!!
Forget everything I said yesterday. I just blew that theory out of the water. I took Ginger again, and she dragged me like a dog. Now she likes to do her business in the middle of the intersections. |

Sorry Rocket, no PR today. I took it nice and slow. I got out a little earlier than I usually do and it was a little cooler and a lot darker.

17.5 miles on the bike.
Thanks for the reminder, Camille. How could I forget? |

Time: 44:36 (9:00 pace)
I had Jeff Lecheminant drop me off at Ocotillo and Ironwood, and I ran home. Last time I did this same run there was more traffic, which was good because the cars' headlights provided almost constant lighting for me. Today there were less cars and more running in the dark than I would have liked. My lower back was tight the whole time and my knees are sore. I think I'll take it easy tomorrow. |

I ran into this lady this morning. I don't think she spoke English too well. I yelled twice, "On your left!" So the second time right as I was trying to go around her left she stepped right in front of me. Luckily I had time to put my arm out, brace her shoulders, and kind of guide from not moving any further in my way as I went around her on her right. She was like, "E-soddy." Pretty funny. |

No running today but here's a song:
Touch down Every morning Ten times! Not just Now and then. Give that chicken fat Back to the chicken, And don't be chicken again. No, don't be chicken again.
Push up Every morning Ten times. Push up Starting low. Once more on the rise. Nuts to the flabby guys! Go, you chicken fat, go away! Go, you chicken fat, go!
Left! Left! Left! Left! Left a good pound and a quarter. Was it right, right that it should be left? Yes, I left! Left! Left! Left! Left a good pound and a quarter. It was right (left), right (left) that it should be left!
Now, touch your toes with me. Ready!
Touch down (up) Every morning (down) Ten times! (Three!) Not just (up) (Four!) Now and then (up) (Five!) Give that (up) chicken fat (Six!) Back to the (up) chicken and (Seven!) Don't be (up) chicken (Eight!) again (up) No, (Nine!) don't be (up) chicken again. (Ten...halt!)
Hit the dirt! Hit! Push ups next, Nice and steady. Not too fast. Ready!
Push up (down) Every morning (up) Ten times! Push up, Starting low. (Down! That's five.) Once more (down) on the rise (Six!) Nuts to the (down) flabby guys. (Seven!) Go, you (down) chicken fat, (Everybody sing!) go away. Go, you chicken fat, go! |

Cheshire Chase 5k - Beat the Bishop (3.1 Miles) 00:24:21, Place overall: 2, Place in age division: 1
Happy Thanksgiving!!
I ran this race last year, but they changed the course this year. It was raining throughout the night and very cloudy this morning. I went to where it started last year, and nobody was there. This is just a neighborhood 5k put on by people I go to church with. Since I moved, I emailed my friend who did it last year to see if they were going to do it again this year. He told me they were, but he didn't tell me the starting line had moved. The stake president didn't want anyone to cross any roads for safety reasons. So I figured that somebody should've been there because I got there about 6:55am. When no one was I figured they whimped out and canceled it. Then I tought, "Come on. The SGM was held in way worse conditions than this." So I drove to the park and saw them there.
The race started at 7:45am. It was great to see my old friends (even though I only moved away 4 months ago.) As the race started a bunch of little kids took off. There was a 16 year old rabbit that jumped out to the lead. After about 200 yards the littler kids tired out. I was running behind the 16 year old about 20 feet behind him. After a quarter of a mile I looked behind me and nobody was there. I know that there were two guys running that were faster than me including the bishop. Bishop MacKinlay was on my Ragnar team last year. For whatever reason he decided to run at a 9 min. pace. He probably ended up going even slower. And Doug Tueller decided to run with his 8 year old son. So I decided not to push it too hard since no one else aside from the 16 year old was pushing it.
They had a drink station set up with no one manning it at the mile marker. The 16 year old wasn't sure if that was where we were supposed to turn around or not so he stopped. I caught up to him and said we have to run down to Southern Ave. (another half mile.) He took off again and I just let him go. When he turned around I slapped him high-5. Then I got to the halfway point and started slapping everyone high-5 as I went by them. I knew everyone was just doing it for fun so there was no need to kill myself. In my mind though I was going back to the post on the discussion forum about which is worse: a marathon or a 5k? I think unanimously it was voted that a 5k is more painful. I thought that I never push myself hard enough for it to hurt as bad as the elite runners say it does so maybe I should. But I knew that I was in first place out of the adults and with no fear of anyone catching me.
The 16 year old (sorry, I can't remember his name) ended up finishing in 22:05. I came in second in 24:21. That's a little faster than my training pace. So I'm happy with that. I might've pushed it harder if Bishop and Doug were running harder, but it was just a feel good fun race. Even still I got a certificate for beating the Bishop, and I got a medal for first place in my age division. Now I'm ready to eat turkey! |

| | I ran the regular loop this morning. I was up earlier than usual because I had to bring my boy to the "alternative" school. He's not happy. Anyway, our washing machine is on the fritz, and we can only wash real small loads, so I was down to my last pair of shorts. (Yep, I can still wear shorts here even at 6 in the morning.) I didn't bring my "watch" with me to time myself this morning since I planned on taking it nice and easy because it's my first run since the race. My "watch" is and has been for a while now my cell phone. I usually start running as soon as it changes from one minute to the next. Then as soon as I finish I start counting seconds in my head until it changes from one minute to the next. I figure I could be off by as much as 6 seconds or so depending on how much counting I have to do. But on a 3 mile run that amounts to only 2 seconds per mile, and that's close enough for me. I've seen in our internet history that my wife has been doing searches for Garmins. So I may be getting one of those for my upcoming birthday and/or Christmas. That'll be nice. Back to the run: I think I was going at a pretty good pace regardless of how easy I wanted to take it. One thing that was slowing me down was my last pair of shorts. There's no draw string. So I had to worry about keeping them up all the time. I didn't worry too much because it was dark out. I tucked my shirt in hoping that would add a little more friction. Then I rolled them over once. I ended up rolling them over three times. I should've rolled them from the get go. No one would have seen how dorky I looked in the dark. All in all the run felt good. I was glad to see that I didn't put on too much weight with all the holiday feasting I've been doing lately. |

I thought I was running faster, but I guess not. It was dark and I passed these two ladies. I hope I didn't freak them out too much. No Garmin for the birthday. Maybe Christmas. |

I did the first 5 miles in about 44 minutes. (8:48 pace) Then I felt a pain in my knee so I immediately stopped. I walked about 0.15 miles until it didn't hurt anymore, then ran the rest of the way home. |

Halelujah! Ginger didn't poop. Ginger didn't poop! High-ho the dairy-o, Ginger didn't poop! But she was off to the races. Man did she drag me today. I didn't time myself, but I wish I would have. My knee felt great.

Argentine Rocket's lookalikes
I couldn't decide which one I liked best, so let the viewers decide:
Natalie Portman?
Rosario Dawson?
Jennifer Lopez...?
...or Jaws? (my wife told me not to put this one because it might make you cry. She also said you look like Alyssa Milano.) |

| | The pain in my chest was so bad today, I finally went to urgent care. They took X-rays. Everything looked good. The doctor said worse case scenario is that I have a hairline fractured rib. But unless they get the exact right angle, it wouldn't show up in the X-ray. More than likely it is a strained ligament. He gave me some pain medication and muscle relaxants. I guess I'll bow out of my 5k Saturday. Hopefully I'll be going again in a couple of weeks. |

| | Jogged it. It was achy. Tried to test out the Garmin, but apparently I have to let it locate the satellites first. 8:53 pace. Time 26:08. |

Well, according to Mr. Garmin, the loop I usually run is 2.95 miles. It's nice to know that GoogleEarth is accurate up to the hundredth of a mile. I have to trust that Garmin is completely and one hundred percent accurate up to twelve decimal places. I have to. |

Bicycle ride PM
Distance: 17.5 miles
Time: 1:11:14 - against the wind most of the way.

This was the first time I got to work faster than I got home. I haven't rode in forever. I'm not used to it now, and I was exhausted when I got home. |

Oh my gosh I'm getting so fat. Don't tell Marion.
Tonight's run was horrible. I was pushing as hard as I could, but my pace was way off. I think because my legs were so sore from all the biking I did yesterday. I'm sure it also has to do with not running forever and my horrible diet.
