Burt, what is up with the 1.6 miles? Are you coming back from injury or what? I would suggest you become a super hero this year, shed the drab and get some super hero duds.

From Claudio on Tue, Jan 01, 2013 at 14:35:40 from 173.67.51.157

I hear you, Burt, I've got 10 lbs of holiday in me - that picture is exactly how I felt like today... good job on the 1.61!

From Burt on Tue, Jan 01, 2013 at 14:41:49 from 72.223.86.148

Brent - Yep. I had injuries for the better part of last year. But I think not running didn't help. I should have powered through them.

Claudio - I've got over double the holiday pounds that you got. Time for a crash diet.

My second day of running in these bad boys.

I like them.

It was 40° out today.  Stinkin' cold.  Glad I wore a long sleeve shirt.

My back seems to be doing all right.  I was worried because I took the youth on a snow outing over the weekend.  They were all sledding down this hill.  I figured I needed to do it at least once.  That was dumb.  Do you know what bumping down a hill on a piece of un-cushioned plastic does to your spine?  I do.

Good job and cool shoes. I once hurt my back sledding. Bummer.

IJR - you're killing me today. You're posting what I think. I was thinking to myself that this is way more than a 10% increase, but I convinced myself that that rule doesn't apply to anything under 3 miles :)

Dale - we're not as young as we used to be.

I didn't go out again last night like I wanted to because Emily is getting sick.  Poor thing. This morning's run was on average almost 30 seconds per mile faster than all my other runs this year.  That's a good sign.  I was four for four on people saying good morning back to me.  Then right before my house around the corner this old man was walking his dog and letting it  bark at another dog behind a gate.  He looked crazy.  I took a gamble and said good morning.  I'm not sure what he said back, but it wasn't good morning.

Some day I'll run more than 3 miles.  Not today.

Right before I got to mile 1 I saw a vehicle in the median that needed to be pushed off to the side of the road.  There was one guy going to push and one guy inside steering.  I ran across two lanes of traffic to help out.  We waited for a break in the traffic and powered the vehicle across the street and on to a small side street.  I'm pretty sure I did most of the powering.  Now I was on the other side of Val Vista.  I've never run over there before.  It was uncharted territory for me.  It was all together both scary and somewhat exciting.  But it was over before I knew once I crossed the street at Southern.

When I was running down Southern I heard a skateboard on the other side of the road.  I remembered my rule #2:  If you're skateboarding on the other side of the street than me, then yes, we're racing.  Then I remembered my rule #1:  If you're fat and out of shape, then no, you're not racing ANYONE!

Our construction field inspector at work had to have hernia surgery.  That means I have to do his work while he's away.  I put 57 hours in at work last week.  Everyday I'd say to myself, "I need to go running when I get home.  It's a beautiful day, and I feel great!"  Then a couple of hours later I'd say, "Ow.  My legs hurt.  I've been walking all day.  And these 10 hour days are killing me!"  So, I didn't run for a few days.

Today there were no excuses.  I had to get out.  It was 39° out.  That shoulda been an excuse, but then I remembered everybody else in the world.  So I ran, and I felt great.

It was 42° out, so I decided it would be okay to go with shorts and a short sleeved T.  I haven't run over 5 miles in forever.  In fact, it's been since Vegas Ragnar.  But I survived.  When I got home dinner was ready.  I decided to eat before I showered.  But I didn't have much of an appetite.  After nibbling on my chicken sandwich for a bit I got up to take a shower.  Then I started shaking uncontrollably.  I was soooo cold.

I feel bad for you. 42 is SO cold. Heck, you might want to NOT run until it is over 60 again, cold weather running, I've been told, is VERY bad for your health. Maybe you should get an electric blanket so that you can stop the shivering.

But, congrats either way on getting those five done!

I wanted to kill myself on my run this evening.  Mostly because I couldn't get that song "It's Friday, Friday" out of my head.

I heard this poem today and I liked it -

have you ever shattered a snow shovel?
have you ever dropped your car keys in two feet of fresh snow?
have you ever had to get our of your driveway using an axe and a rake?
has your "tire pressure low" light ever been on for three weeks straight?
has your engine oil ever turned to the consistency of mayonnaise?
have you ever lost part of your nose due to the elements?
have you ever had a nose bleed strictly because the wind was so cold and dry?
do you have to wear special winter balm on your lips to keep them from splitting open?
have you ever had to wash your eyes out with a boric acid solution because they were so dry and blood shot from the cold wind?
have your knuckles ever started bleeding because your hands were too dry?
have you ever had an ice beard, even though you are a woman?

Okay, this one was a good one to read, especially the comments!

It's funny you should bring up an ice beard because the other day I noticed increased hair on my upper lip! This happened right after I mistakenly put engine oil instead of mayonnaise on my sandwitch. It just gets too confusing in the winter! Anyway, shortly after this my nose began to bleed. Obviously I was bleeding out so I sniffed a little boric acid solution to stop the bleeding. Well, it worked but created other issues. Somehow this all led up to a nice little ice beard. Although awkward, it certainly is a good conversation starter. What does any of this have to do with snow anyway? Oh well, happy running and good job tackling 5.42 miles Burt!

April- Just shave it off. I have to shave my entire face, back and chest daily now. That boric acid will mess you up. It has really made race day prep more challenging. I'm okay with hairy legs, but the rest is just...well...a manly curse! Glad to get this off my chest finally.

wow. that turned really hairy, really fast. easy on the body hair there, girls.

From allie on Fri, Feb 01, 2013 at 06:00:55 from 97.117.83.221

kacy: i've been using a product for about 6.5 months to control body hair, and thus far it has been the best solution (hands down). i use regular palmolive dish soap -- unscented so that james doesn't catch on, but if you prefer zesty citrus, mountain rain, etc -- just know you have options.

this soap produces 3-4 times more suds per square inch, making body hair removal smooth and razor burn free.

alternatively, you could look into the new full-body track suits that nair just started selling (i wear-tested one three months ago). the fabric that touches your skin is coated in sticky wax, so when you take your clothes off after a run (do you do that?), it takes all the hair along with it.

this might be a good option for you since you mentioned the pre-race hassle. just wear a nair wax track suit to the start line and rip it off nonchalantly. you may want to bring a friend or licensed body cream practitioner to help put skin-soothing lotion on after you rip off the suit, but that can be arranged through the nair website.

you could also try amazon for more generic track suit brands -- probably cheaper.

good luck, torrie.

From SlowJoe on Fri, Feb 01, 2013 at 07:51:57 from 155.219.241.10

allie, terry and april - you are all missing the forest for the trees here. Body hair, in addition to providing warmth during a cold winter, vibrates in the wind while running and stimulates the muscles, increasing power and running economy. So my scientific recommendation is to let it grow out to 4-6 inches then maintain it at that length.

From allie on Fri, Feb 01, 2013 at 08:04:47 from 161.38.221.168

just to clarify, does that include upper lip hair? and would you recommend braiding it for race distances longer than 5k?

From SlowJoe on Fri, Feb 01, 2013 at 08:08:30 from 155.219.241.10

ESPECIALLY upper lip hair. Crimp it for a 5k, braid it for a marathon. It's all in my scholarly paper, published on Yahoo Answers.

I had every intention of running home again from work.  But I tried to do a million things this morning.  I cut my hair.  I missed a nice patch in the back.  I packed my duffel bag.  I checked the fluids in my vehicle.  I scraped the ice off my windshield.  I had to get gas.  I needed to email out the plans I finished last night, and my internet was acting up.  I needed to pack my lunch, but we didn't have anything.  I was running all over the place and ultimately forgot to grab my duffel bag.  I was mad and honked my horn in a school zone.  I got to work on that road rage thing.

Anyway, I suited up when I got home and went out for 7.  I'm running real slow these days, but at least I'm running.  I joined a Del Sol Ragnar team last night.  It should be interesting.  The name leaves something to be desired.  I'm too embarrassed to say what it is.  I shouldn't have committed until I knew what the name was.  Let that be a lesson to you kids.  Funny because two weeks ago I was invited to be on another team.  The problem was I know that this team snuck alcohol in their coffee mugs so they could drink out on the course.  I emailed the team captain and said that as an ambassador for Ragar, I can't knowingly be on a team that's going to break the rules.  I never heard back from them so I joined this other team.

3 easy miles.  I wore my red shorts, my red FC Barca shirt (not the same shade) and my baby blue Asics Gel Trainers.  I looked good.  Real good.  That must be why when I was running in front of these two young hotties pulling out of Little Caesar's, they said, "Get it!" and they started clapping.  I'm sure they were college girls.  If not, I'm belong in jail.

I ran home from work again.  First along the railroad tracks.  Then up Val Vista.  I was feeling a lot better than two weeks ago.  I ran about 40 seconds faster per mile, too.  When I got to Guadalupe, I heard somebody yell, "Burt McCumber!"  I don't know if they were yelling at me or another Burt McCumber.  I have no idea who it was.

I really wanted to get out and run this loop at Usery.  I've been wanting to do it for a while, but I don't think I'm ready.  I'm glad I didn't try it today.  That would have been bad.  Instead I thought I would run a 10 miler in the morning and see what I could do in the afternoon.  I started out ok just plodding along.  I got to the turn around point and slapped Not-so-Lady Liberty high five.  I had gone up 140 feet in elevation to that point so I figured it should be no problem to cruise all the way home.  But I had a pain on top of my left foot.  By the time I got to 8.4 miles it was hurting too much.  I decided it best to just walk the last two miles.  So I did.  I've also talked myself out of doing the marathon in two weeks.  I don't even think I could walk it at this point.  Hopefully I can get a deferral for next year.

The "I've talked myself out of doing the marathon in two weeks" reminds me of my dad. Most people wouldn't even consider a marathon when they haven't run over 10 miles in months.

When my dad had terminal cancer I asked him what he was planning to do one week and he said, "Well, I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to run the St. George Marathon on Saturday."

19 miles on the cycle without training wheels.  There's some road construction going on by my work right now.  All of the east-west traffic is routed to the south side of the road behind the newly constructed median.  That means I had three lanes of traffic all to myself.  It was quite luxurious.  I saw a high school kid walking down the sidewalk and I yelled at him, "Check me out!  I'm riding in the middle of the road!"  He wasn't amused.  I passed three other cyclists on my way home.  And I saw a lady pushing a baby stroller without a baby and talking to herself.  That was weird because she didn't have the appearance of a wack job.  By that I mean, she looked bathed.  Cleanliness and sanity go hand in hand.  Don't you think?

Yeah, maybe it was on a bicycle.  So what?

Last night, or probably this morning, I had this dream that I was swimming in the open water of a lake in a triathlon.  I was very far behind the pack when all the sudden a wave of bodies that had made it to the turn around was coming right at me.  So I went down in the water a little so they could go over me, but then I started to sink.  Everything started getting black.  It freaked me out and I immediately woke up.  I wondered if it was a sign for me not to go on my ride today.  Then I figured maybe I just watch too much TV.

Word to the wise: If you wear shorty shorts when riding a bike in the sun for 3 hours, don't forget sunscreen.

After last week's 35 mile ride I thought I should be able to do a 50 mile ride if I keep to a relatively flat course.  So I set out to ride 50 miles around the Mesa city limits.  I took a water bottle, a Gel, and a pack of Shot Bloks.  I should have brought some snacks with some salt in them, but I survived.  First I headed toward the ghetto.  I could tell the wind would not be cooperating.  But I'm so stubborn that I tried to ignore it.  Dobson Road is not a good road to ride a bike on.  I know that now.  But it was nice when there was road construction and I was going faster than the traffic.  I also hit some traffic near Hohokam Park where the Chicago Cubs play during spring training.  There was a game about to start.  One scalper asked me if I needed tickets.  His friend said, "Nah man.  He's riding a bike!"  I laughed.  It was a gorgeous day out.  As I approached northeast Mesa, I started the climb up.  It wasn't as significant as the climb up Usery Pass last week, but it was still a pretty good climb.  Going downhill is always the best.  But it does put pressure on your hands.  Then I got to my old neighborhood.  It was nostalgic to see where I used to run back when I started running again 6 years ago.  There was some road construction blocking the road.  Luckily I knew my way through my old neighborhood.  By this time my butt was barely hanging on to my body.  My legs were getting numb.  And the wind was taking it's toll on me.  But I knew it was all downhill, so I just cruised in.  When I got home I was disgusted to see my Garmin said 49.61 miles.  I had to ride to the end of the street and back to make it 50.00 even.

It took less than 4 hours. Hold on. Let me turn back on my Garmin. 3 hours, 47 minutes, 15 seconds. I did put sunscreen on. But since I wore longer shorts this time I thought I didn't need to put any on my legs. Now just from my knees half way up my thighs are burnt :)

From Burt on Fri, Mar 29, 2013 at 19:50:48 from 72.223.80.89

ACorn - I just wasn't in a hurry to get to work :)

Tracy - You're fast. I'm slow.

From Burt on Fri, Mar 29, 2013 at 19:54:06 from 72.223.80.89

Seriously though, 12 mph is a 5 min/mile. 15 mph is a 4 min/mile. 20 mph is a 3 min/mile. Whenever I've looked at the top results of a triathlon, they're usually up around the 21 - 22 mph range.

From Burt on Fri, Mar 29, 2013 at 19:54:29 from 72.223.80.89

My fastest mile on the way home was a 3:19.

From Tracy on Sat, Mar 30, 2013 at 15:42:14 from 50.103.236.137

What's challenging for you? I'm assuming the 3:19? And what's a sit back and relax pace for you?

From Burt on Sat, Mar 30, 2013 at 15:46:32 from 72.223.80.89

That's a very good question Tracy. While I was doing the 3:19 it felt so good to be moving that fast, but at the same time I was pushing it. I don't know how long I could maintain that pace, but I think if I got stronger, I could do it for much longer. Obviously my main objective in getting to work is to arrive without being a total sweat hog. The 13.9 mph was probably a bit too fast, but I ended up getting there at 8:01am, so I didn't have much of a choice. In order for me to get to work without being too moist I probably need to be going closer to 12 mph.

From Tracy on Sat, Mar 30, 2013 at 20:03:55 from 50.103.236.137

Yeah, I can imagine it wouldn't be a good idea to arrive at work looking like you took a shower with your clothes on.

So around 12 mph is relaxed? Got it.

From Burt on Sat, Mar 30, 2013 at 20:30:13 from 72.223.80.89

So, we have an understanding? Good!

From SlowJoe on Sun, Mar 31, 2013 at 17:30:52 from 96.61.24.215

So your ST (sweat threshold) pace is about 13 mph. That's an important number to know. Don't forget to subtract 10% when it's a warm day. Let me know if you have any questions.

AdamDogDeelius - We went to Sacrament meeting in the ward that meets in our building before us because we wanted to get to my sister-in-law's house early for Easter dinner. But I had to give the lesson in Deacon's Quorum, so I told my family to go on without me and I would ride my bike so that we wouldn't use two tanks of gas. Luckily my ward has Sacrament meeting last, so I was able to go right after Deacon's Quorum. I rode home, but then my wife called to say the keys were locked in the van. By this time it was dark out so I couldn't ride back, and we ended up using two tanks of gas anyway. Do you have any idea what I'm even talking about?

I found this dead coral snake on the side of the road.  Figured Quiet Pirate could add it to her booty.

Was it snake stew at the mccumber homestead tonight?

From SlowJoe on Sat, Apr 27, 2013 at 18:51:51 from 96.61.24.215

We already know he'll drink half-empty gatorade bottles he finds on the side of the road, so snake stew isn't much of a stretch.

From Burt on Sat, Apr 27, 2013 at 18:54:57 from 68.106.9.193

That snake looks delicious. What part would you say I'm about to eat?

Well Mr. Coach Klein. Basically, a snake don't have parts. But if I had to call it anything, I would say it's his knee.

From The Quiet Pirate on Sat, Apr 27, 2013 at 20:07:41 from 67.238.139.59

Wa-wa-wa-wa-wa-wa-waterboy! I'll send my first mate to collect the snake come next full tide. Until then, I'll need you to go out and spritz it with a little water to keep it fresh and collectable.

And keep that Vicki Valencourt away from my snake! She's the debil!

When Burt McCumber makes a promise, Burt McCumber keeps a promise.  If I tell myself that enough, I might just believe it.  But I did get my "long" run in tonight.  I left at 9pm.  It was still 80° out.  It was dark, but I wish it was darker.  I felt like such a fat slob the whole time.  In fact, I motivated myself by telling myself that all the way.  It helped.  Helped give me even more low self esteem, that is.  How am I ever gonna get Tracy to be on one of my Ragnar teams if I'm this fat???

This morning when I ran, it felt so much better than Saturday night.  I think the problem Saturday was that I just finished eating like 15 chicken nuggets and a burger.  Nonetheless, I still decided to run on the canal to limit human contact.  Within the last year they put a nice 10 foot wide sidewalk alongside the canal that also connects to the magic water fountain.  They also put some pedestrian lights.  31 in between Southern and Lindsay, to be exact.  And they put in a pedestrian cross walk at Southern.  Lindsay, too, come to think of it.  Anyway, I got to Southern and I pushed the button to cross.  Actually, it was more of a sensor than button.  I seriously only had to wait about three seconds before it stopped traffic and let me go.  I felt kinda bad because I was running, and the cars would have to wait there until the light turned green.  Which was a while, I'm sure.  Then I ran almost to the freeway and I realized I was at the park where my son just broke both his tibia and fibula.  He now has a 15-inch rod in his leg that will be there for the rest of his life.  I ran over to the concrete spillway where he fell off his skateboard.  It's pretty big.  I said, "Yep.  That'll do it."  Then I ran back home.

I had some time to kill because I needed to register as a volunteer for the Third Thursday Adventure Run at 10am.  If you try earlier, they won't accept you.  By they, I mean the same they that built the sidewalk, lamps, and crosswalks.  So, since I've just finished watching 24 on Netflix, I watched the pilot episode of Prison Break.  I think I'm going to enjoy it.

After signing up to volunteer I got on my bike to ride out to one of my new projects.  My client wants me to design a right turn lane on Higley Road.  So I got the brilliant idea to video that portion of the road where the right turn lane will be while riding my bike.  Below is the result of a morning's worth of work.  At least I got a good 17.25 miles in.

I just read all your May entries. I haven't read much on the blogs lately. The steel rod in the leg sounds bad and expensive. Yuck! The type of thing my second son Eli would do, doesn't think things through as well as he should sometimes. Had he gone down it successfully before?

I watched 24 and Prison Break.

Next time tell yourself positive things even if you don't believe them. "I can do this," "I'm a lean, mean, running machine," "Julie thinks I'm cool, etc."

From Burt on Thu, May 23, 2013 at 19:24:10 from 72.223.88.98

Yeah, actually, supposedly that was the last time he was going to go down it before going home. He pressed his luck.

Did you like Prison Break? A lot of people have told me the quit watching it after the first season. Heroes will be the next one I watch. So, you really think I'm cool?

From julieesplin on Thu, May 23, 2013 at 21:48:52 from 75.169.177.252

I really liked 24, but it went downhill a bit for me the last few seasons as it became such a stretch to bring Jack into it etc. Prison Break was good for a few seasons. I can't remember how many it was on, but the last one (or maybe even two) wasn't as good. I saw two episodes of Heroes and stopped because it had too much gore and violence, but maybe I just caught the worst episodes. 24 and Prison Break are both violent too. Happy watching.

I got up this morning at 5:30am to help set up flags with the Boy Scouts.  As I was driving down the street I saw that the flags were already up.  I got to the other leader's street and saw him jogging back to his house.  He told me that one of the parent's already set them all out.  Nice.  So I fiddled around on Facebook for a little bit and went for a bike ride.

I could tell my back tire was a little low.  When you can feel every little rock and bump, it's a good indicator that your tire's lost some air.  And when your tire is low, you don't ride as efficiently as you could.  And it's not as comfortable.  Nevertheless, I pressed on.  I rode my Usery Pass loop.  It's 35 miles long and has 1100 feet of elevation gain.  It was a beautiful morning.

I was trudging up McDowell Road when all of the sudden a gas bubble came up, and I didn't hold back.  Burrrrp!  Of course right then, some dude passed me.  I apologized.  When I got to the bottom of the big hill at around mile 17 I stopped to eat some Shot Blocks and to listen to a phone message.  It was my boss.  I had asked him to call me when he got into work.  I called him back and we talked about business.  Then I told him I had a big hill to climb, so I better let him go.  I started up the hill.  It seemed like I felt stronger than I had before whenever I've rode up Usery.  At least I was able to go into higher gears than I usually ride in, which I thought was strange with my low bike tire.  Within the first half mile a coyote trotted out in front of me about 20 yards up.  He wouldn't stop for me to take a picture, though.

Half way up I started singing a made up song that would be great for Dora the Explorer.  It was something like this:

Don't stop,
Don't stop,
Not gonna stop,
'til I make it to the top.
Come on, Burt,
You can do it,
You can do it if you put your mind to it.

Of course, just then another dude went blowing by me.  I apologized to him for singing, but I don't think he heard the apology.  I'm sure he heard the singing.  When I was almost to the very top I started singing again.  This time I looked back to make sure nobody was behind me.  Good.  It was safe.  When I stopped, it wasn't long before some dude came out of no where and passed me again.  He said, "Good morning."  I'm not gonna lie.  He spooked me.  He spooked me good.  I just looked back, for crying out loud!  I told him as he zoomed by, "You scared the poop out of me!"  He said, "Sorry!"  And he was gone.

Now was the downhill.  My favorite part.  I was really picking up some speed.  When I got back into town I got stopped by a few annoying stop lights, but I was still flying along pretty well.  I was approaching Val Vista where I'd have to turn south.  Then it would be another 4.25 miles home.  I made up another song:

Gotta turn right,
Gotta turn right,
At the light
I gotta turn right.

But I never made it to the light.  My bike tire finally gave up.  I called my wife to come get me.  But I still got 30.75 miles in, and it was a pretty good ride.

Well, instead of going running this morning, I decided to ride my bike to work. So I got all my stuff ready to go and that was no small task. I packed my back pack with my  work shirt, three lunches, and my gate clicker. I filled up my water bottle and tucked my pant leg into my sock. I haven't rode my bike in forever because the back tire was flat. We got it fixed weeks ago, but I hadn't put it on yet. So I put it on while one of the kittens was bothering me. Then I went t

Then I discover that one of the plastic connections is broken. Then I can't even air up my tire because it doesn't have the right adapter! On top of that I had to wake up my daughter multiple times to watch Emily because both my wife and I were going to work. You'll be honored to know you were the topic of our post dinner clean up conversation last night. Aaron was telling me about his lunch conversation with a few friends where they were all agreeing that exercise, even just a little bit every day is hugely beneficial in lowering stress. Its ironic because sometimes when you're stressed exercise is the LAST thing you feel like doing. Believe me, I know. But what if you just even did a tiny itty bit. Like 10 push ups right now. Or one sprint around the block. Or PU-PU-SU! Oh you know you love that one. That'll give you something to blog about AND reduce your stress. Ready...GO!

Last night I went with the 12 to 18 year old boys from church to camp out at Roosevelt Lake.  This morning I went on a little run.  It felt good and had just enough elevation gain to make for a good workout.  Later I swam in the lake.  Then I sat at the edge of the lake and got the seat of my shorts all sandy.  Then I was going to ride in someone's boat, but I didn't want my sandy bottom to  get all over their boat so I jumped off the dock into the water.  Then when I went to climb back in I think I cracked a rib on the dock.  Then I rode on one of those big tube thingies and bounced around on my rib cage.  Now it hurts.  Then the end.

Julie! I had my wife pack my stuff while I was at work, and I forgot to tell her to pack me some panties so I was going commando! Would that change your mind about having me take them off and dipping them? Speaking of losing your shorts, one of the boys was hanging on the tube and fell off, but wouldn't let go. The next thing you know he lost his shorts. They were bright pink, but they were gone. Luckily he had spandex on underneath.

I wanted to go on a bike ride this morning, but I was too lazy.  Well, too lazy for a bike ride.  I spent most of the day working on a Grading and Drainage plan.  After it got dark I decided that the best thing to do would be to go on a run.  This was a good call because no one could see my fat jiggles.  It was 83º.  I kept it real slow.  I mean REAL slow.  I cut through the park over towards the magic water fountain and nobody was there.  I ran down the canal to the freeway and back.  When I passed the MWF again, there was somebody there.  Since I wasn't ready to be raped I didn't stop.

There were a lot of people out this morning.  Walking dogs, riding bikes, jogging.  Nobody recognized me.  I did see a lady who comes to our church even though she's not a member.  She's there every Sunday with her kids who are members.  Her husband is a member, and he never comes.

That makes sense. Often after getting arrested, celebrities will do a commercial for a product that they've wronged. From what I hear, Oprah was recently arrested at the airport. They caught her with 300 lbs of crack in her panties.

Hence the need for Body Glide.

My first thought was that Ginger must be your dog. Then I realized I was jumping to conclusions and have come up with a list of other options. Many of which are not appropriate for a public forum. Either way, I'm sure she loved the mother bird MWF refreshing beverage.

Usery Pass.  I invited both of my Ragnar teams to join me.  Nobody came.  Typical.  I haven't even run half the distance lately, not to mention they've all been dead flat.  I wondered how I'd do.  For that reason, I was glad nobody showed up.  As I was driving down the road I realized I forgot my water.  Oh well.

I saw quite a few runners on the Bush Highway on the way up there.  Maybe they're gearing up for SGM next week.  There were tons of cyclists.  I didn't feel like counting them, not that I could have even if I tried.  But I made sure to say good morning to all of them.

I heard my pace from my pocket after the first mile.  I thought, "Hey, that's not too bad."  But I told myself that the 2nd mile is always the slowest.  Yeah, that 2nd mile was really slow, but I felt good.  After 2.5 miles the hill is not as steep, so it gets easier.  I kept trudging up the mountain until I got to the top occasionally talking to myself as a biker would sneak up behind me.  I think with the wind at my back, they couldn't hear me.

I finally had a run this morning that didn't feel too miserable.  I was out running by 5:30am.  The sun was just barely coming up when I finished.  I braved to run along the streets.  I saw two other runners.  One lady was wearing a Ragnar shirt.  I told her I liked her shirt.  Other than that, it was kind of boring.  So let me tell you some more boring things about my run on Saturday.  As I was running down hill one of the cyclists gave me a hoo-ah!  Thank you for thinking I was a marine.  Also, I saw some sort of animal scat all over the place.  I did not know from what kind of animal it was.  I wish I was better versed in the science of animal scat.  You'd think I would be.  I thought about taking a picture and posting it on the blog to see if anyone else knew what type of animal it came from, but then I thought, "even I'm not THAT gross.  Quiet Pirate, maybe.  But not me."

I saw a hobo sleeping on the bench by the MWF.  He had a white sheet propped over him like a tent.  Today's playlist: Bryan Adams; Summer of 69, Nameless Band; Bed of Roses, Guns N' Roses; Knockin' on Heaven's Door, 3 Doors Down; Here With You, Joan Jett; I Love Rock N' Roll, Nameless Band; Have a Nice Day, Aerosmith; Angel.  Looks like I'm down another two man cards.

Bon Jovi isn't a very good band but not a nameless band.

How do you know he was a hobo and not just a homeless bum?

Actually I think Bon Jovi could be considered a hobo.

Bon Jovi is a sell out. I take that back. You have to have talent before you can sell out. Burn! I don't have a crush on him.

Race: 2013 Ragnar Trail McDowell Mountain (16.5 Miles) 03:18:00
Total Distance
16.50

This was my first Ragnar Trail race.  The way it works is all the teams set up their tents at a base camp.  There are 8 people on a regular team.  Start times are staggered throughout the day.  We started at 2pm.  I was runner #1.  I ran the green loop.  When I finish I hand off the race bib which is attached to a belt, to runner #2, and runner #2 runs the yellow loop.  Then runner #3 runs the red loop.  Then runner #4 runs the green loop.  You continue in that order until everyone on the team has run all three loops.

My first loop was pretty tough because of how hot it was.  And that set the tone for my remaining loops.  The green loop was 4.6 miles with lots of up and down hills.  I knew it was hot so I decided to take it very easy because I didn't want to carry any water with me.  I had just drunk a full Gatorade so I figured I wouldn't dehydrate.  I was right, but I probably should have brought some water just to dump on my head.  The hills were really working me because I hadn't really trained for them and I was using muscles that I don't really need to running on the road.  After a while I could feel the cotton mouth coming on.  I knew I was going to be quite a bit slower than what I'd hoped for.  Oh well.  All the time I kept thinking about when I ran Ragnar So Cal in 107° heat and wondering how I would be able to complete my next two legs, but then it was much cooler and they were no problem.  So I figured I'd be ok.

My next loop was the red loop.  It was 7.6 miles and had the most elevation change.  But the nice thing was that it wasn't as much up and down all the time.  It was just a gradual climb up and then back down.  By this time it was 11pm.  It had cooled off considerably.  I was still recovering from my first loop, but I had no problem running the whole way.  This time I carried water with me and my phone so I could use Endomondo to know how far I'd gone.  After about 1/2 mile I took my headlamp off and put it in my pocket and ran by the light of the moon.  It was a risky maneuver, but I enjoyed it.  I didn't fall at all like 90% of the runners out there.  Probably because I was going slow.  I did have a couple times where I would step in a depression and jar my back, but it was a pretty good run.  They had the course well marked with colored lights on the markers.  After I finished I pretty much slept until my final leg.

The last loop, the yellow loop, was the shortest distance, 4.3 miles, but everyone said it was the hardest.  They were right.  It had the toughest hill and the most rollers.  I was pooped.  But I kept a pretty steady pace.  Steady and slow, don't you know.  I forgot to put Body Glide on this time and started feeling my sensitive areas getting uncomfortable, so I took my shirt off.  At one point a girl passed me and I apologized for what she had to see.  She laughed.  Hard.  Despite how hard it was I managed to finish strong.  The nice thing was that the sun had just come up and it wasn't too hot.  Unfortunately for the rest of my team they had to run in the heat again.  We ended up being 5.5 hours behind our projection time.  Little Old Lady!

Most of the people I talked to said they preferred the trail relay to the road relays.  You don't have to worry about driving all over the place.  You get more sleep.  You get to hang out with the whole team all the time.  I still think I prefer the road races just because I much prefer running on the road.  Trails are tough.

Well, in two weeks I'm running the Vegas Ragnar.  I have one leg that will be 10 miles with 828 feet of elevation gain.  So this morning I decided to mimick that by running 10 miles up and down Usery Pass.  The elevation gain on this run was 860 feet.  It was a beautiful morning, but it was starting to warm up.  I took no water with me on the run, just a chocolate Gu.  Once I got to the top after 3.7 miles I took the Gu.  I ate a banana before I left.  From then on all my burps tasted like chocolate banana cream pie.  Yummy!  I saw a penny on the side of the road.  I remember when I first started running again over 6 years ago and anytime I saw money I would think that it was a good luck charm.  There were a lot of cyclists out as usual.  I must admit, I was digging all the looks of amazement and envy I was getting from them.  One guy said, "You're really getting it this morning.  Go get it!"  It would have been cool, but he looked like a douche.  After about 8 miles I was really wishing I was done, but I just kept going because my water was in my truck.  Near the top I did see a brand new gallon of water that someone had stashed, but I left it alone.  Anyway, I made it, but I had to run two laps around the parking lot to get an even 10 in.  There was another guy there putting his bike together.  He probably thought I was weird.  I'm glad my truck was still there.  I left my keys inside hidden.  At one point during the run I saw a white GMC Sonoma coming towards me.  I had to turn and look to make sure there weren't any Ragnar stickers in the back window.  So I texted my wife and told her I made it.  I asked if she could make me a cold drink.  She said sure, but when I got home, there was nothing.  So I made myself a milkshake with two packets of P90X Recovery drink mix (orange flavor.)  Then I took a shower.  Once I was done washing myself I turned the water all the way on cold and stood there for about a minute.  I asked my wife if she cared to join me.  So when she got in she got a cold surprise.  That's what she gets.

Last Saturday we had a Boy Scout overnighter and I slept on the ground inside my tent.  As the day went on my back tightened up more and more.  I was real nervous because I've been teasing my Ragnar team about not being able to run.  Thursday I stepped on a rusty nail and had to go to Urgent Care.  I told them I hoped my foot wouldn't fall off.  Now, I that I was really hurt, I felt like the Boy Who Cried Wolf.  Anyway, I've been taking care of it, and today it felt ok.  I ran 3 miles and it did fine, so I think I'll be all right for Vegas this weekend.

I love you all so much.

Race: 2013 Vegas Ragnar (17.1 Miles) 02:51:00, Place in age division: 89
Total Distance
17.10

I'm calling this my sweet 16th.  My team regrets not baking me a cake. But everything else in this race was about me, so it's ok.  So, people who don't know me are probably going to hate me after reading this report.  And that's also ok.

Shannon Downs invited me to be on her Vegas team.  She was the captain of my Vegas team two years ago and our So Cal team last year.  She made a Facebook page for our team.  At one point, she asked us all to submit a name for our team.  Only one name was submitted.

Our van consisted of Shannon, her husband who was doing his first Ragnar, Shannon's friend Sharrell who was on Shannon's Vegas team last year, Sharrell's husband Chris who is a cop for the City of Mesa, and our superstar Betsy who was on my Vegas team three years ago.  We took my van and drove up up to Vegas.  We picked up Betsy at the airport.  It was fun listening to all of Chris's cop stories.

We stayed the night at the Mount Charleston Resort.  It was nice and had a beautiful view, but horrible wifi.  We played Uno.  I slept on the floor, which made me worry because my back didn't like it when I slept on the ground the previous week at the scout camporee.  But my back did all right.  Unfortunately, I couldn't stay in one position very long and tossed and turned a lot which caused me to snore.  Oh well.  Burt rules at snoring, too!

Before we left the resort, we decorated the van.  I had printed out some black and white pictures of a handsome Burt Reynolds.  Little did I know that Shannon had printed out some quality pictures of me.  She must have got them off my Facebook page or something.

Our start time was 9:30am.  It wasn't nearly as cold or windy as it was last year.  Matt started us out and did awesome.  He handed off to Chris.  Chris is not to fond of running, but he did great.  He started sprinting when he hit the 1 Mile to Go marker.  We had to boogie to the exchange so he didn't beat us.  Chris handed off to Sharrell.  It was so romantic.  Sharrell handed off to Shannon.  Everyone was doing great and we were getting ahead of our predicted times.  Shannon handed off to Betsy.  Poor Betsy.  She had just run a 3:24 marathon two weeks prior.  Her ankle had been bothering her ever since, so she tried to take it real easy up until Ragnar.  Her first leg was 9.4 miles.  She got about 2 miles in and knew it wasn't going to happen.  The bad thing was, this was a no-support leg because it was out on the highway.  Anyway, another van saw her limping along and called it in.  We got a text message from Ragnar telling us that our runner was injured and we needed to go get her.  It said she was about 4 miles in.  So we drove back down the divided highway, but couldn't find her.  Near the halfway point there was an overpass that the runners had to run up and back down on the other side.  We pulled off there and asked the teams that were waiting there if they had seen our runner.  They had not.  Then as we were driving on the on-ramp we saw another van pulled over.  We asked if they had seen our runner.  They had.  They were the ones that called it in and they said there were some emergency vehicles tending to her.  So we figured they had taken her to the exchange.  We got back to the exchange and found her.  I felt so bad for her.  I told the volunteer to mark me down because our runner was hurt and I was taking off.  My first leg was 3.6 miles.  I didn't have a GPS with me, but it felt longer.  I made it to the first major exchange to find Bethany waiting there for me with my picture on her back.  I gave her a "good game" slap on the tush because they didn't think I would do it in front of her husband.  Luckily someone snapped a picture right then and has immortalized it on Facebook.

Our second set of legs were at night.  Betsy still wanted to participate so we switched things up a bit.  Sharrell had a two mile leg.  Betsy ran/hobbled that one.  What a trooper.  My run was 10.0 miles with 828 feet of uphill.  It was no-support.  The first 6 miles felt great.  But then it seemed like the hill got a little steeper.  I knew there was some downhill coming after 7 miles so I just pushed myself to get there.  The downhill was nice, but it wasn't much of a relief.  I thought the last three miles were downhill, but only two of them were.  The last mile was back uphill.  That kicked my behind.

By now it was getting cold.  I slept in the passenger seat of the van for a while.  There were no showers and I didn't feel like baby-wiping off in the cold.  So I just sat there and stewed in my own filth.  I ended up wearing the same outfit for my final leg, which is something I've never done before.  I actually didn't shower until I got home.  So disgusting.  Anyway, nobody needs to know that.  My last run was early in the morning.  Night time hours were over, so I was lucky enough to only have to run one night time leg.  My last run was 3.5 miles.  My back was kind of tightening up, so I put my T.E.N.S. Unit on for a while.  But my hamstring was really starting to bother me.  That worried me.  Anyway, I stretched it out real good and that helped.  It didn't bother me at all.  My final leg was real nice.  Mostly downhill and glorious.  Shannon and Matt split Betsy's final leg.  Everyone did great.  After we finished and while we were waiting for Van #2 to finish, we went to IHOP.  Betsy snuck out and paid for everyone's breakfast.  She's the best.  I love her so much.  I know she felt bad, and I told her how I couldn't finish my legs last year because I also got injured.  I told her how much of a loser I felt like and how I didn't know if I deserved a finisher's medal.  It didn't seem to help her.

As a team we finished about 30 minutes before what I predicted we would.  We were in the top 27% of our division.  I think that's pretty good.  I am proud of my effort.  I wish I was in better shape, but it's hard lately with as much as I've been working.  But I will say that my team rules!!

Race: 2013 Arizona Mudathon (5 Miles) 01:15:00
Total Distance
5.00

My wife's sister, Missy, you know, the one that likes to grab my sweaty pocket, has been getting a lot of discount coupons lately.  I think they have something to do with her husband being a veteran.  So she got a 60% off coupon for the Mudathon.  I don't know if she wanted to do this because it sounded like fun or because she got a coupon for it.  Anyway, she thought it was a 5k.  I told her, "Didn't you read the big bold letters on the website? 'This is not a 5k!  This is a 5 mile obstacle course!'"  That worried her a bit, but I told her she'd do fine, even if I had to drag her by her hair.

She had another friend join us for the run.  That made it fun, kinda like being a team, but not really.

In this picture, Missy is #2.  Haha!  I just said Missy is #2.  Daylene is next to her folding her arms.  I think they're saying a prayer before the race.  I'm right behind them.  I'm #17.  Apparently Missy and I signed up to be timed.  There were only 22 registered runners that signed up to be timed.  We didn't mean to, but oh well.  Next to me is a cute photobomber.  It's like she's looking right at my wife's camera who was so far away from us and zoomed in.  She must have magical photobombing powers.  It looks like she's wearing a tiara, but it's a bandana that someone behind her is wearing.  Anyway, they crammed as many runners as they could into the corral and started groups running every 8 minutes.  We were in the second heat.  As we were waiting a bee flew by and started making everyone nervous.  I calmly extended my arms and clapped it to death.  Everyone was so impressed.  I told them not to worry about this obstacle course.  I had their backs.

This Mudathon had a lot more obstacles than the Mad Mud Run that I've done in previous years.  It was real fun.  There were tires to run through, giant tires to climb over, sandbags to carry, balance beams, cargo nets, monkey bars, walls, steps, and four of five mud pits.

The run was pretty easy.  We stayed at Missy's pace.  She did real good.  She only had to stop and walk for about 30 seconds a couple of times in the last mile.  I was surprised that there were only a handful of competitive runners.  We all kept encouraging each other.  Daylene was afraid of heights and one of the cargo nets was about 20 feet high.  She was scared, but we all helped each other go over each obstacle.  When we got to the monkey bars I tried swinging across but I slipped off after about two or three.  Then Missy got up there and powered her way through.  I was like, "I can't let her show me up."  So I got back up and went and did it, grabbing each bar with both hands because I couldn't skip bars.  I was glad I did it so she didn't have bragging rights.  But it did make me sore afterwards.

The hardest obstacle was the cargo net/monkey bars.  It was about 16 foot long.  In the middle there were a couple of planks that you could stop and rest at.  Well, you were kinda obligated to rest there.  You had to use the cargo net like a set of monkey bars, but the problem was that it hurts your hands.  So one girl got the bright idea to climb to the top and go over the obstacle.  Another person swung their feet up to the net and crawled upside down.  That's what I decided to do.  It was difficult, but I made it to the middle.  The rope hurt the back of my ankles, too.  Since I only had about 8 feet to go, I decided to try and jump out as far as I could and Tarzan swing the rest of the way.  When I grabbed the rope it sunk down and my feet landed in the mud pit.  Missy ended up falling off the net into the mud pit, too.

All in all, we had a fun time.  We hosed off when we were done.  I donated my shoes, tossed my socks, and then went out to eat breakfast.

Sorry, I'm late. What did I miss? Hi Allie!

Burt-If you meet one more person at the monkey bars...

Time for a poem.

They ran in mud with an extra bud.

A 5k turned five,they took the dive.

Mud brought in by the tons, they probably strained their buns.

From a photobommer, to a bee- Burt was there to lead them through something tougher than the red sea....except for the (unfortunate)bee.

First to last, second to last, it's all the same. Everyone who ran, had an absolute blast.

Burtrules, Missy and the bud all ran in mud, to set the pace on a victorious mudathon race!

It rained all day yesterday and a little today.  I went out at 11:15pm.  It was a little cold, but shorts and a t-shirt were fine.  I wanted to run down the canal, but when I got there I saw a sign that the road was closed to all recreational activities due to maintenance.  So, I just went along the streets.  When I got to Southern and 32nd I could tell that there was a car that had no intentions of waiting for the light to turn green.  It slowly creeped its way out into the intersection and turned left on to Southern.  I pointed and yelled at them as loud as I could.  "You're in trouble!  I'm telling on you!"  Then I saw some weirdo in a hoodie sitting by the street on the other side.  It's almost midnight.  What are you doing out there just sitting?  Weirdo.  Maybe he was an urban ninja.  I saw three more urban ninjas tonight.  They need to work on their stealthiness.

So you were out near midnight on Saturday night and talking to suspicious-looking hoodlums. Have you considered a term life insurance policy?

From Neasts on Mon, Nov 25, 2013 at 17:58:45 from 75.169.63.76

The difference between you and me is that I would have disregarded the closed sign on the canal road. Probably no urban ninjas there!

Joe - what kind of deal can you get me?

Neasts - Is that the only difference between you and me? Probably. Also, I don't think ninjas can read. So maybe there were some there.

Race: 2013 Kimball Stake Turkey Trot (3.36 Miles) 00:36:28
Total Distance
4.03

Happy Thanksgiving.  I love you all so much.  I got up this morning with four of my daughters, my sister, and my dog to run the 2013 Kimball Stake Turkey Trot.  I think we had about 250 participants.  A large majority of them were on bicycles or scooters.  When you get there, you grab a number and safety pins, write down your number on a sheet of paper with your name and your guess as to what time you'll finish.  The winner is the person who guesses the closest to their actual finish time.  No cheating allowed.  I think my guess was 34:40.  Or 33:40.  I can't remember.  We got there right before it started so I was still pinning my bib (index card) to my shirt when everyone started.  I jumped in the back of the pack and started trotting along.  Before long I found my 8 year old, Abby.  I stopped and walked with her for a while.  Sometimes we would jog.  Sometimes we would speed walk.  I stayed with her for almost a mile before she said that I could go ahead without her.  So I did, but I felt bad and told her to make sure she stayed with the group.  Then I just moseyed along to the finish.  A couple of minutes off my guess.  But I did start my Endomondo and it was yelling out my time every mile.  So technically, I was cheating.  Anyway, I ran back to find my daughter and by this time she had caught up to two of my other daughters.  They were taking a short cut.  My other daughter dropped out and called mommy to come pick her up.  It was a beautiful morning.

No cheating, but bikes and scooters are ok in this "trot." I like it...a lot. Sounds like good family fun, hope y'all had a great thanksgiving.

From artichoke on Fri, Nov 29, 2013 at 14:42:57 from 74.211.14.96

I would have taken the bicycle option. It would probably have gotten me a faster time, unless I ran over a safety pin. Also, I was happy to learn Thanksgiving is celebrated in Arizona. I know you guys don't do the Daylight Savings thing, so I wasn't really sure.

From Burt on Sun, Dec 01, 2013 at 08:35:19 from 184.98.217.24

Joe - actually they only recorded the people that finished by "trot." We had a wonderful Thanksgiving. Hope you did, too.

Choke - Of course we celebrate Thanksgiving! We wouldn't have casinos on the reservations without it!

I went to Safford to visit my brother the day after Thanksgiving.  We stayed the night at a Comfort Inn.  It was quite comfortable.  I snored all night.  Then I pigged out on the continental breakfast because the room was so expensive and I wanted to get my money's worth.  Probably not the best idea knowing that I would be running shortly thereafter.  I figured my brother lived two miles away from the Inn, so I ran a mile down Highway 71.  It wasn't long before I realized the higher altitude was getting to me.  I also needed to launch some snot rockets, but I'm the worst at that, so I didn't.  I saw a bunch of cotton all over the road from the cotton farms nearby.  I thought about grabbing a handful and blowing my nose into it.  Again, I didn't.  After I crossed the hightway and turned around I felt a piece of phlegm bubble up.  I got ready to hock it, but it shot right out.  It was bloody and snotty and it landed all over my shirt.  It was so gross.  I think I'm getting sick.  I found a crumpled up piece of paper and wiped it off.  Then I continued on to my brother's house and got exactly 4 miles in.
