10K: 43:33 (2010)

10 mile: 1:13:35 (2009) (1:12:15 split in 1/2 marathon, 2011)

Short-Term Running Goals:

3:20 marathon - Eugene Marathon, April 28, 2013 (can I say I really want a sub 3:20? but I will be happy with 3:20-3:23) -- whoohoo!

Some good intermediate races 15K - 1/2 marathon, to gauge my fitness level (done this, hit a 1:34:35 1/2 marathon in March 2013, on a hilly course)

Going after my 10 mile PR in Fall 2013

Maybe some good 10K races after the infernal Arizona summer is over!

Long-Term Running Goals:

I want to be one of those runners who is still running in their 80s (or 90s?).  You know the ones, who look all grisley and fit?  That is what I would like!  Until then, I just want to work hard and be as fast as I can, for as long as I can.

Stupendeously good, albeit hilly, run in 2:16:56.

This is my last horrible-two-job week.  Next week is still two jobs, but without the additional stress of preparation for lectures.  I do, however, have about 20 hours of training (most of it online) and a report due for work, to temper my no stress hope a bit ;-).

Happiest of weeks to you bloggers!

We have a new dog.  I found her in the middle of the road on Saturday.  I think someone dumped her, a lot of people dump their unwanted pets in the mountains, thinking a coyote or mountain lion will "take care of them" - or cars.

She is so very sweet, though smelly, not house trained, and in heat. I don't think she was abused, but maybe neglected.  She is part pitbull and part mastiff?  lab?  she has a HUGE head -- and if she weren't the sweetest dog ever, she would be scarey.

AM: 8 miles.  10 x 1` hill repeats.  Ouch, my bum hurts.

PM: easy 4.

By the way, it is not easy to have a dog that takes a lot of time (untrained) when you work the kind of schedule we do ... so, she is off to doggy boot-camp for a week or so.  Her name is Lucy.

Happy trails bloggers, it was pretty darn cold here in Tucson today!!

where did the week go???

Today, Wednesday, December 5th, was my last day of teaching, ever?

We (most of the faculty in my division) went out and celebrated.  I did not feel well on Thursday ;-)

AM: 8 miles - so, Dean ran his first race in nearly 3 years this morning.  It was at the university - he was looking for a fast 5K because he and Greg McMillan are trying to find races that they can win (not easy to do when you are 53, by the way ;-)).  So, Dean thought that this 5K that is sort-of affiliated with the Tucson marathon (which is tomorrow) would be just the ticket (since most of the fast people are running the half or marathon).  Well, these darn high school runners showed up and stole his thunder!  But, he did come in 3rd, and we have "just the race" for him to win (we met someone who works for Pam Reed - the  race director of the Tucson marathon - and he is sponsoring a race in January) -- I told Dean that the only thing that would ruin it for him was if Greg found out and showed up on race day (ha ha ha, I seriously debated setting this up, but I really do want Dean to "win" the bet!).

PM: 4 miles

Even though it doesn't look like it, I am actually getting much faster.  My usual runs are taking less time, even though I am running at the same effort.  "sort-of" excited to go to the track and check things out!

Last night we met up with some friends of ours from Nashville (well, now they live in San Francisco - but we met them in Nashville).  They are in town for the Tucson marathon this Sunday!

2:15:05. Remember what I said about getting a little faster?  felt the same as last week, but somehow was nearly 2 mins faster -- I think I am just feeling better this week in general.

Happy Sunday bloggers!

AM: (10.5, 1:34:45).  ~25wu/36cd 15 x :45 w/1:30 recovery.  It is a hard workout when you start out too fast ;-).  Luckily, the weather was perfect, and I still managed to get the last 2 miles uphill to my house!  My legs were a little tired though, I think I ran a little harder than I thought last weekend.  All is good though, the training is beginning!!

PM: easy 4.

I hope you are all doing well ... it is beautiful here -- 30F in the AM and highs in the 60s, who could ask for more - well, more light would be good, but with the added daylight comes heat, so I guess I am ok with just as things are!!

Stephanie Rothstein ran a solid 2:32 in the Honolulu marathon on Sunday, good enough for 3rd.  Apparently it was hot and humid, so she is happy ... and at least it wasnt the deluge of CIM the weekend before!!

AM: (8 miles, 1:05:34)  10 x 1` hill repeats.  ouch.

PM: easy 4 miles with my co-worker Bob.  He runs too  hard, he two-steps me (meaning he always is running in front of me), as he huffed and puffed, I finally told him, "you are running too hard, I keep trying to slow you down but you won't".  He slowed down for a little while and then started doing it again ... it must be a guy thing  ;-).   The good news was we got out early enough for it to be light out, and the run is pretty good, uphill for 2 miles, then downhill for 2 miles!!

Happy Thursday bloggers!

Pretty tired today, and we have go schmooze at a work Christmas party!  It has been raining all day ... A good day to lay around between runs.

I am very sad about the Connecticut shootings, I have been pretty heavy-hearted.

I am not sure how long this run was, but it took me 2:36 mins ... I think it was around 17+ and it was super super hilly.  It  was happy it was done, but I was also happy I finished strong uphill the last 2 miles!!  So lucky.

AM: (9 miles, 1:20:32).  10 x 1` w/1` recovery -- from the pages of this months Running Times!  In his article this month, Greg talks about using these for "speedsters" like himself (speedsters are people who are stronger at fast short races/training but don't feel as comfortable at longer stamina types of races/training -- converse to speedsters are "endurance monsters") as an alternative to tempo runs.  For people like me, who prefer longer-stamina type workouts, he uses these workouts to prepare your muscles (neuro-muscular) for speed-based workouts, sort of like hill repeats.  This workout is harder than it looks, especially if you go out too fast on the first couple!

PM: easy 4.

Hope all is well with you bloggers!!

between 11-12 miles, 1:37:19.  My scheduled workout was 90' thirds progression run (first 30' easy, middle 30` medium, last 30` somewhere between half-marathon and marathon effort).  Since this course is a little on the long side, I did not start the middle portion until about 35-38 mins into the run).  This was a two hilly loop course, each lap has an average 7% elevation gain - max elevation of 15% grade (last 2 miles pretty much uphill the whole way).  I figured it would be good for my "head" to be challenged this way - plus it makes me focus on running by feel, and not pace.

It was pretty tough the last 10`, probably tougher than it was supposed to be, but ... I ran the first loop in 52:14 (I started running a little harder the last mile of this loop, so on a "normal" day I would probably run this in 53:30 or so).   Second loop in 45:04!  Whoa.  I had no idea I could do that, although I did feel like I might throw up the very last push up the hill (I did not) -- and  now my bum and hip are killing me!

AM: (9 miles, 1:10:45).  70` with 45` Steady State run in the middle.  First SS mile (based on pretty inaccurate mile markers on the road) was 7:50, last was 7:21.  Ran on Beach Rd. in Gulf Shores, Alabama.  It is h-u-m-i-d here, and windy (gulf on one side of the road, bay on the other).  Can't believe I just did two of these sort of workouts in 3 days.  Welcome back to training!

PM: easy 4.

Merriest of Christmas wishes to you all!

1:01:32.  Very slow recovery run in the 21mph wind, residual from the storms that hit the area last night.  We are in Gulf Shores, AL.  Near Mobile that had several tornado's last night - we were watching basketball and there were so many warnings that came over the airwaves: tornado's, severe thunderstorms, coastal storm watch, coastal flooding ... wow.  Our lights sputtered on and off, but we were pretty unscathed.  Winter on the gulf ...

We had a nice day yesterday -- lots of food (but I behaved pretty well), lots of laughter!

Happy trails bloggers!

AM: (9 miles, 1:11:43).  fartlek run, 10 x 2` w/1` recovery

A little more difficult than it looks ;-) (close to 10 x 500-600 meters with 200 recovery) - plus, even though the mileage is a little low this week, relatively, it has been my first higher intensity week since my treatment.  You've got to start somewhere!!

PM: easy 4.

One more run in AL and then -- back to AZ  -- happy after-Christmas-but-before-New-Year, bloggers.

easy run, last one here in Alabama.  In a hurry -- we had to stop by the Maxwell Cancer Center (Southern Alabama University) for lunch.  Dean has some colleagues there that he is working with on a grant ... I got a "free" lunch, and then a nice office to sit in and have a couple conference calls -- good times ;-).

It will be good to be home ... Dean's Mom cooks too much ;-)  -- even today we were trying to stuff lemon scones into my bag!!

AM: (8 miles, 1:08:45).  Easy run on the "radiation run" ... back in Tucson! It was a wild ride home, lots of storms, arrived at 1:30 AM.  Had to get up early to go pick up the dogs ... and Zula the cat started wailing at about 4 AM (she was lonely).  To avoid Dean getting up and locking her in the laundry room (which I thought might add insult to injury) I got up and lay on the couch with her until about 6 AM (silly thing to do for a cat, I know, but I did feel bad for her).

PM: easy 4.

2:36:04.  Nice, hilly, chilly, run!

Happy to run some mileage this week after last weeks intensity ;-).

Hope you are all doing well, and getting ready to start a new year.  Let me say again how lucky I am to have run as many miles as I did this year even undergoing treatment for cancer, and how even luckier I felt having your support.

Here's to an even better year in 2013!!!
