I'm about 3 months post partum and I was happy with my race today considering how long it takes me to get in shape after having babies. It was just fun to get out and race again, even though it was almost 100 degrees. I'm still a long ways off but I used this race to get my legs moving again. | | I ran in South Ogden today and decided to do a 3 mile tempo. The first one since baby #3. She's 4 months old and sleeping through the night. I don't know how I got so lucky. I started running tonight at the same time as a pretty intense thunderstorm. The wind was blowing hard and the rain was unforgiving, then the lightening started after I was about 1 mile into my warm up. It cracked right over my head twice so I decided it would be best if I took refuge in the starbucks near by. After about 10 minutes the lightening and thunder moved on and the wind wasn't blowing as hard so I ventured out again and finished a 2 mile warm up. I jumped right into the tempo but I didn't really have a goal time in mind. I pretty much just went off of feel. This was my first tempo in a year and I still haven't lost much of my baby weight despite consistent running (people say you lose weight nursing, but I don't believe them). Anyway, tempo splits were 7:10, 7:02, 6:46. I was happy with this, I needed to start somewhere. I'm hoping I continue to improve. 2 mile cool down.

| Race: |
Morgan Valley 5k (3.07 Miles) 00:21:14, Place overall: 1, Place in age division: 1 | | We got a babysitter today so we could both race up in Morgan. Riley ran the marathon and I ran the 5K. I was disappointed to learn the day before the race that they weren't offically timing the 5K. I didn't want to do the 10k though because I still have a lot of baby weight to lose and the 5K would be a perfect workout for the week. I had no expectations going into this race. The temperature was nice and cool.
The gun went off and I immeidately was the first place female. There were quite a few high school boys who went out in front of me but I ended up catching most of them and only losing to 4 of them. The first mile had an uphill then the rest of the course was flat. As I started getting a feel for the race I picked a pace that would be comfortable and a good push for me. So I tried to run all 3 of my miles under 7 minute pace. Mile splits were 6:59, 6:51, 6:59. I was pushing hard the last mile to keep under 7 minutes. I just barley got there. It's a good starting place for me. Hopefully I'll keep at it and improving. Now I'm looking for another 5k to jump into soon.

| | I ran in south Ogden this evening. I decided to do a workout and run the south Ogden 5k course as a tempo run. Before I started running the wind kicked up and a storm was headed my way. So I knew it wasn't going to be easy to run at a decent pace plus the course I picked had a couple steep hills. I did 1.5 mile warm up, I didn't have much time, my sister in law was watching my kids. I started my workout into the wind and uphill. My legs felt fatigued the whole time. I only got my last mile split because my watch was acting screwy. The last mile is the easiest one on that course and I was 6:46. I think my average pace for the course was 7:25 so I definitely struggled up the hills. But my AP was faster then the race I ran a month ago on that course, so that's a positive to take away. We warmed up 2 miles together on the trails, then I did 3x1000 and 4x400. 2 minutes rest between my 1000s and about 1:35 rest between my 400s. It's been quite awhile since I've done anything longer then a 400 so I decided to do my 1000s at 6:45 pace which would be around 4:12. I went to fast on my first 1000 and I think it made the rest of the workout more difficult. The 1000s overall felt fine but the 400s were tough to get through. 1000s (3:56, 4:02, 4:04) 400s (93, 92, 94, 94). 2 mile cool down.

I wanted to run a workout today and decided on 8x400s. 2 mile warm up ran them with 1:40 rest between each 400. Splits started out like this: 92, 92, 92, 94. After I ran the 94 I thought, that's enough of the 92-94 sec. 400 splits. I've been doing the same pace the last couple times I've attempted 400s and it was time to wake the mama bear up and get my body moving faster. I wanted to see some improvement so I focused up for the last 4 and ran 87, 88, 88, 87, I'm happier with that result. Hoping to see some more improvement. 1 mile cool down.

I'm not quite sure it'll turn out as well as I would like with these extra workouts I've been doing everyday but tomorrow's race isn't end game. These 21 day fix workouts are helping lose weight and convert my flabbiness into muscle. After the run cardio fix. |

Focus 4 Miler (4 Miles) 00:27:31, Place overall: 1, Place in age division: 1 | | We got a babysitter today so I could go run this race in Roy, while Riley was up running top of utah. I ran Focus4 back in 2011 and took 2nd place. I needed another race to run this month and remembered this one was a good course, well marked, and well put together race with a lot of prizes for giveaway. They did $100 cash prize to the overall male and female winners and then $20 if you won your age division, I was hoping for one of those prizes. I showed up to the race and did a 2 mile warm up. I was feeling good but I wasn't sure how this race would go because of all the 21 day fix workouts I've been doing this week. I've been extra sore. I was warmed up and ready to go at 7:55 because I was planning on 8:00 for the start time. It turns out that everybody had to walk about half mile to the start so we didn't get started until about 8:20. I forgot about that from 4 years earlier. Once the race started the first mile felt pretty stiff. There weren't any other females ahead of me at the start but I looked behind about halfway and saw a female about 1 minute back so I made sure I concentrated the whole way and didn't let up from the pace I was running. Not that my pace was very impressive, but for me, I was pushing the whole way. They had one hill at the end of mile one that wasn't too long then a good uphill in mile 3. My splits were 6:59, 6:56, 7:03, 6:44. I was happy with my race today it went better then I expected. I felt like I was focused the whole race and pushed through the difficult portions. Now I'm $100 richer.
AP 6:53 for the race.

| | I met up with Sariah at Beus Pond to do a workout. I haven't had a great week so I wasn't sure how this would feel today, Sariah also has not had a great week. She had a flu bug for a few days that did a number on her. She just planned on jumping in a few of my intervals with me. 2 mile warm up and then I did 4x1000 and then 4x400s. The goal for the 1000s was 4:04 the goal for the 400s was to not die. Splits 3:59, 4:00, 4:01, 4:04. 3 min jog then 400s: 90, 89, 86, 86. About 1:35-1:45 jog for rest. I was pushing hard those last two 400s. 2 mile cool down. The workout was an improvement from a similar workout I did a month ago.

| | Tonight I went to Beus pond and decided to run 6x800s. I'm kind of randomly picking workouts to run each week. I feel like I can't go wrong with anything, I need it all to get in shape. I was shooting for 6:15 min/mi pace which is 3:08. Ended up with 3:06, 3:07, 3:06, 3:05, 3:05, 3:08. I was definately struggling that last 800 but I'm happy with how it all turned out. I also did about 1:44 jogging rest in between. 2 mile warm up and cool down.

| | Weekly workout this week was 5x1000s. My goal pace was the same pace as my 800s the week before. Today, my target was 3:53.
I did a two mile warm up, saw a nice big rattler snake crossing the path, that was lovely.
A couple strides at Beus Pond to start, then onto my 1000s. I was perfect on my first two 3:53, 3:53, 3:55, 3:48. My 4th one, I thought I was falling off pace so I kept pushing harder and harder and then I spent all the rest of my energy on that one. It ended up being my fastest one. But because I told myself beforehand that I was going to do 5, I started my 5th one anyway and was slow from the get go. I was dry heaving by the 800m mark, so I stopped for 5 seconds, then I got mad at myself for stopping, and finished the rest of the 1000. I didn't really count my 5th one because I stopped. Oh well, hopefully I'll be smarter next time and try to run even. I feel like it's hard to find a rythum these days with these intervals I've been doing the last few weeks. I feel like I'm an amateur.

The Layton Classic (3.28 Miles) 00:21:19, Place in age division: 2 | | Today was the Layton Classic race put on by our good friends Ken and Janae Richardson. This was my 3rd year running the 5K. Both the 10K races and 5K races were pretty competitive today I wasn't expecting to place today, I was just looking to continue to improve for the year. I don't know what my overall place was for females, but I placed 2nd in my age group today. I don't have much to report except that I averaged 6:30 pace, which is what my goal was. The course measured a little long, had it been 3.1 I would've been under 21 minutes. Splits were 6:24, 6:37, 6:25, .28 - 1:51. Mile 2 has the uphill and it was a better split from my previous two years. Happy with the progress today.

| | I woke up yesterday feeling crummy so I skipped out on a run. Today, I'm still feeling crummy but went for a run anyway. I'm running the Huntsville 10k tomorrow but with even lower expectations then before.
|
| |
| Race: |
Huntsville 10K (6.06 Miles) 00:42:23, Place overall: 1, Place in age division: 1 | | Utahrunning.com gave me a free entry to the Huntsville 10K. I was excited to run even though I've been sick the last couple of days with a head cold. Before I got sick I was hoping to run a 6:45-6:50 min. pace but since I've been feeling crummy I just went out to run off of feel. I already was coming into this race with low expectations because I'm still out of shape, then after getting sick all expectations went out the window. Anyway, it was a low key race the big races up in Huntsville are the half and full. I did a 3 mile warm up with a couple of strides. They started the race and I was immediately out in front as the 1st female. The 1st mile we run with the 5k runners then we split off and the 10k runners run out along a road towards pineview and there was a turn around point where we head back and turn into some neighborhoods. I enjoyed the scenery of this course, I got to run by pineview and through some beautiful neighborhoods and houses. Then we joined the 5k runners back on their course the last couple of miles for the finish. My splits were pretty consistent today and I'm happy that my last mile was my fastest. After about 4 miles I had a lot of mucus so it was hard to breath after that point I was doing some wheezing. Mile splits 7:04, 6:56, 7:02, 7:03, 7:03, 6:53. My watch had the course a little short 6.06. I think I could've been a couple minutes faster had I not gotten sick. Overall, happy with how it turned out. After my 4.1 mile cool down I waited to watch Cynthia and Sariah finsih the half. Then I went to see if I got anything for first place in the 10k. The results showed me finishing 3rd for the women, I knew that wasn't right. I didn't like having to go correct the timing people but I went and talked to the guy in charge of awards. The results showed two women ahead of me, one finishing the 10k in 32 minutes the other in 39 minutes. I knew they had to have signed up for the 10k and run the 5k instead. The girl that ran 32 minutes wasn't believable the 39 minute runner could've been believable. But I knew no women were around me at all. Luckily, the guy took pictures of all the top finishers in the 10k as we finished. He saw that I was the first female finisher. There was my proof. It really wasn't a big deal I didn't care about the trophy but it's frutrating when people don't run the race they originally sign up for. It screws up the results. It's nice to look at the results and see your name in 1st place.

| | Some disappointment today with my workout. I was planning a 5:30 evening workout like I usually do on Wednesdays, but my mother in law offered to watch my kids in the early afternoon. She text me an hour after I ate my lunch and said she could tend, I thought my stomach wouldn't bother me, but it did. I should've just waited for my food to digest and go later. My tempo didn't go the way I planned. I was hoping for 4 miles at 6:45-6:50. But ended up 3 miles in 6:54, 6:53, 6:52. It felt terrible. |

| | Woke up early today for a workout. I met Sariah in her neighborhood and was planning 8x400s. Her neighborhood is pretty flat and isn't windy so it worked out well. I wore the head lamp for the warm up but I didn't want to wear it for the workout. So we were running blind on some parts of the course. She was a few seconds ahead of me for each 400 but I'm happy with how it turned out for me. More improvement since the last time I did 400s. .15 jog between each 400. | | I met up with Sariah to do a trappers loop workout. We met at Sinclair in Mountain Green. It was dark almost the whole run. We started out by running out 2 miles on a flat road then 2 miles back, then headed up Trappers loop 4 miles. The uphill miles on Trappers loop went by surprisingly fast. The plan was for me to do a 5 mile tempo down Trappers so I could practice for Snow Canyon. I did this workout 2 years ago except this time I did 4 miles of all down hill and finished my last mile on the flat road. Sariah helped push me along especially the 5th mile when I thought about quitting. Splits were 6:28, 6:23, 6:27, 6:36, 7:04. My downhill miles were about right but I was hoping to maintain 6:45 for the last flat mile. But I couldn't quite will myself to go faster even with Sariah pulling me along. Splits from 2 years ago 6:56, 6:30, 6:18, 6:16, 6:32 these were all downhill miles.

I had some bathroom issues on my warm up which didn't help with the limited time I had but once the issues were taken care of I felt pretty good. There is a pretty flat loop in South Weber that's a mile around and it's perfect for mile repeats. I guessed my target time to be 6:25 for each repeat. After 2 mile warm up and some strides I jumped in. I was pretty consistent with these, which I was happy about, now I wonder if I could've done that 5th one and stayed on pace. Splits 6:25, 6:26, 6:26, 6:23. About 2:50 jogging rest. 1.3 mile cool down to get back home. I also broke in some new flats.

| Race: |
Snow Canyon Half Marathon (13.3 Miles) 01:27:28, Place overall: 15, Place in age division: 3 | | Finally Snow Canyon came. This is one of my favorite races, mostly because of scenery. My original goal for this race was to run faster then I did at this race 2 years ago. But about a few weeks ago, I was looking at my workouts from 2 years ago and saw that I wasn't as fast now. So, I decided to go for a 1:30 instead. Angie stayed with me at my in laws condo and her sister was nice enough to drive us to the start. We found Merilee up there and we got some warm up in. I was feeling good, perfect weather today. I felt strong through the whole race and was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. Even though my time was 30 seconds slower then 2 years ago, I feel like this race was much smarter. I pushed through miles 9 and 10, which I usually struggle with in the half marathon. I pushed hard in the end and passed one more girl right at the finish, which i never do, coming in at 6:10 pace for the last .10. Splits were: 6:34, 6:52, 6:41, 6:22, 6:12, 6:18, 6:21, 6:42, 6:31, 6:29, 6:54, 7:01. The last two miles were the toughest and had a few rolling hills. AP 6:35 overall. 2 years ago miles 10-13 were all 7:16. Much better finish this time around. Good starting point for me. I typed this up on phone, hopefully this makes some sense. |

I ended up running my fastest long run so far this year. Janae, Cynthia, and Alyssa planned a long tempo run, I knew I couldn't keep up with them. Angie and Sariah were nice enough to run back with me. It still felt like a tempo run to me. I fell a few steps behind them for the last couple miles. I was happy with the effort though, I did 10 miles under 7:30 pace. AP for the 10 miles was 7:25. AP for the whole run 7:47.

| | Goal today: 3-2-2 at 6:38
This was my first attempt at this type of workout. I say "attempt" because it didn't go very well, but I did try at least. The positive take away today is that I am now determined to conquer this workout. I'll try again another day.
Angie met up with me and paced me through the 3 mile set, she was helpful. I felt so heavy today the 3 miles felt really hard. Splits were: 6:36, 6:42, 6:53 took a break and did 2 miles 7:04, 6:45. I ended there. It felt hard and forced. Not the goal I wanted for today, but I'll keep at it.

| | Workout Wednesday
I got it done early today thanks to a new arrangement Sariah and I have made with watching each others kids so the other can workout. 2 mile wu. The goal today was 6x800 @ 3:03 with 1:50 jogging rest. Splits: 2:59, 2:57, 2:59, 2:55, 2:55, 2:56. Pleasantly surprised by this workout. Especially since I did it outside in the cold. 2 mile cool down. Huge improvement from the last time I did 800s.

Set 2: 1:34/1:48, 1:35/1:48, 1:33/1:50, 1:35/1:49

| | We were supposed run 15 miles today. It ended up being an accidental 19.3 mile long run. A miscalculation caused us to run an extra 4 miles today. The run gave me a big boost. It was probably my best run of the 2015. I did an 8 mile tempo in the middle of the run. Splits 6:40, 6:40, 6:43, 6:49 6:55, 7:28 (struggled in the Canyon wind), 7:00, 6:45. I'm happy with my first longer tempo. The overall run AP was 7:26. Only a couple weeks ago I was doing a 15 miler with Angie and Sariah and really struggled with 7:30 pace. Today I felt much stronger before and after the tempo.
