I met Steve Hooper at La Quinta at 3:30  this morning. Yes I said 3:30! We went up to the start and waited in the rain a bit and right before they were going to shoot the gun off the Van that was carrying all our bags of clothes forgot to close the sliding back door and took off and we watched our clothes slowly fall out as he drove away. NOT FUNNY! A cop pulled him over after a half mile down the road. So that delayed us a bit. Plus the start was very narrow and they put the porta pottis down a half a mile so we had to wait for slow poopers to come up.  It started very fast just like I predicted. I was running next to Steve Ashbaker, Dave Holt, and Clyde Behunin. It was raining and a slight head wind. I traded off with Steve to try and not get tired but on his turn he turned up the pace and I couldnt go that fast.  At mile 9 I had a pit stop that took 58 seconds which burned me because Dave was about 200 yards ahead of me and Clyde was about 50 yards behind me. When I came out Clyde was about  300 yards ahead of me which blew my mind.  I worked and worked to catch him from then but he was increasing the gap. I caught a stragler at mile 12 in a bright yellow shirt and then a Kenyan at mile 13 which felt good. I was going to scare him and growl but I didnt want to lose a position.  I then passed one other guy at about mile 18 and then saw my family at mile 19.5 as they gave me a gu and Cytomax. I also had a cheerleader slap my butt at mile 17 which rarely happens! Except of course in Wellesley. lol It was Andrea from the Runamoks with Craig cheering us soggy pathetic runners on.  I made it out of the canyon and after drinking that Cytomax I honestly picked my pace up! I almost caught Dave and Clyde and as I got near them, Dave poured on the gas and Clyde followed suit. I passed a few more runners after that and right at mile 23 I saw Steve stop at the aid station and he wasnt looking good. I passed him slowly and by mile 24.5 I was fading so bad I thought he would catch me. There is a bridge that goes up over a railroad tracks they make you run up at mile 25.25 which is just not even funny! I was running in place at that point and when I got to the top I got a nice downhill surge to the finish.  It was fun seeing the Sun runners up and even Paul from up north.

Way to go. I was running the course backwards at that time and saw you with about a couple miles to go, looking good.

From Kelli on Sat, Jun 12, 2010 at 16:09:45 from 71.219.93.114

Nice job, sorry I missed ya this year! I had some direction malfunctions.

From Burt on Sat, Jun 12, 2010 at 16:13:32 from 206.19.214.144

Speaking of malfunctions, glad the bum slap didn't cause a wardrobe malfunction.

From Walter on Sat, Jun 12, 2010 at 16:25:43 from 24.10.169.110

Allie, how come you didnt come down to represent? Lol

Sammie, I dont care how good or bad they are, when they come to show us up its nice to pass by them.

Crockett, I saw you running, I was in a bit of a haze for sure. Fading fast!

Kelli, I saw Jose's family along the course. I felt a little better this time than last year. lol

Burt, my wardrobe malfunction wouldnt have been as popular as the super bowl one.

From RAD on Sat, Jun 12, 2010 at 20:21:38 from 67.172.229.125

Nice work Walter! Hills like that at the very end are NASTY, but I'm glad it had the nice downhill to pull you to the finish! LOVE the growl, I'd like to see you do it sometime :)

From jtshad on Sat, Jun 12, 2010 at 20:53:38 from 69.20.183.178

Congrats on another strong race! Too bad about those pit stops! Keep running strong!

From Lindsey Dunkley on Sat, Jun 12, 2010 at 21:24:11 from 75.169.150.228

And you told me good job...nicely done yourself!

From Superfly on Sat, Jun 12, 2010 at 21:53:58 from 208.117.127.110

Good job Walt. It was great to see you and run with ya. Way to run today. I think that section down by mile 20 to the finish was Dave and I's best part of the race. Wish you would have got up with us too.

From Steve on Sat, Jun 12, 2010 at 21:56:44 from 12.198.106.131

Nice! So glad I was not running a marathon today in that weather!

From Teena Marie on Sat, Jun 12, 2010 at 22:10:50 from 174.52.45.85

You seriously are amazing!!! You looked completely refreshed and ready to run another marathon by the time I saw you!!

A huge congrats, Walter James! :)

From Paul on Sat, Jun 12, 2010 at 23:27:07 from 174.27.230.30

Nice job. It was great seeing you again. If you run the Freedom Run 15K on the 4th, I promise no one will slap your butt.

From Jon on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 00:17:59 from 75.169.136.39

Top 10, 2:41- nice job. I always love your commentary (falling clothes, slow poopers, etc). But I'll be in the crowd at the Freedom Run, so may well have to slap your butt just to prove Paul wrong! Watch out!

From Walter on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 00:47:01 from 24.10.169.110

Rachel, funny girl!

Jeff, thanks! I wished you couldve done this one! Im sure you wouldve lliked this course way better.

Lindsey, I won Ogden Half marathon a couple of weeks ago with a 1:14! You amaze me! There was so much competition today! Way to dominate.

Clyde, way to absolutely kick butt on that last 10k. I reeled you and Dave in right as I rested for a drink from my wife and then tried reeling you in again but you and Dave had mad finish skills! Great hanging out with you.

Steve, this course is fast. I dont think its faster than St. George though. All the concrete we run on and the higher elevation start were factors for me.

Teena Marie, trust me when I say there wouldve been no way I couldve run anymore! I thought about coming back for friends but I couldnt. great seeing you.

Paul, Lewiston has a 5k/10k every year which is where my wife is from. I was told they are trying to round up someone to beat me this year so they can keep the winner in in Cache Valley go figure. lol Ill see how I feel and let you know. I do enjoy that race.

Jon, Maybe I will run if you are there to slap my butt. You have to catch me first though. OHHH! SNAP! lol Hey good luck running up the mountain a boy and coming down a man! Dominate that course!

From Ericka on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 01:03:32 from 174.52.85.1

Nice, Walter! I agree with the overpass at the very end. So not cool and very mean.

From Walter on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 01:22:08 from 24.10.169.110

Ericka, Man oh man it sucked! I couldnt get up it fast if I tried. Even the last .2 miles felt like a half a mile. And the turn up on the sidewalk off the highway wasnt funny either.

From ChrisM on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 08:35:14 from 86.177.210.19

Nice one Walter, well done on 3rd in your age!

You should speak to Sam about the butt slapping, it is *always* happening to her! LOL

From Walter on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 10:05:21 from 24.10.169.110

Thanks Chris, Its crazy to think I took 9th overall and yet 3rd in my age. Some fast old guys out there! Oh and Sam always has her butt slapped in races because people tape that sign on her back without her knowing saying slap my butt! I like it! lol

From Mike Warren on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 10:33:19 from 74.211.5.221

Great race Walter! Good job toughing it out at the end. I can relate to Dave & Clyde pouring on the gas from club runs, not fun lol. Hey, was nice talking to you at the expo and before the race.

From JamesH on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 13:12:24 from 174.52.139.219

Good job Walter. If you would ever come down south maybe you could get a little sun on that white. LOL. Im going to have to try and keep up with you if your gettin butt slaps. Maybe it will rub off and I'll be lucky enough to get one too. Hopefully not from Jon.

From Walter on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 13:59:16 from 68.171.235.85

Mike it was nice meeting you also.keep running with those guys down there. Your bound to get better.

James, you are a riot! Ok ill come down there and run and you guys make it up here for top of utah and ill set some cheer leaders out to slap butt upon any red Singlet St. George runner.

From Holt on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 17:16:05 from 75.169.90.161

That whole canyon I was waiting for you to come up. I knew you were there lurking! Good job on the butt slap - oh, and on the race too!

From David on Sun, Jun 13, 2010 at 22:02:35 from 76.27.55.220
