This is always a great race to run in January!  I have never run a race in my life more sick than I was today.  I coughed the entire night and was very congested with a sinus infection.  I started the race at a very comfortable pace. I was right behind Steve Olson and hit a 5:43 first mile and then all hell broke loose with my pace and breathing and even my legs felt heavy and I was really hot! I had short shorts on and a singlet so I knew I was in trouble I tried to keep under a 6 and it wasnt happening I think Steve Hooper and Craig Green and  a few others passed me at mile 3 as we started up the hill and I was spent. I felt like I would at the end of a marathon. I just kept pushing myself as much as I could and ran this race. I was around a 6:15 pace most the time which im not complaining about. Ive have learned to run according to what my body allows lately and I felt good about my performance. I cant be ashamed of it.  I really enjoy coming here and other places to run a winter race. So awesome.  It was so cool to see and hang out with the team and see their awesome performances.  Way to go St. George Running Center! They do a great job down here. You guys are so lucky to have great weather.

My friend sent me a text message on my drive home from St. George that I thought would go well with my run down there. Its Mosiah 4:27--For it is not requisite that a man should run faster than he has strength...

Very fitting!

Kicking butt already! That is a good time to get in January, heck how do we actually train up here? I think that cold thing is really going around. I heard it had something to do with all the inversion stuff

From Burt on Sat, Jan 22, 2011 at 21:17:34 from 72.223.84.236

Nice job Walter - especially being sick.

I've battled sinusitis and sinus infections for over a month. Think I've finally found a solution between the sauna at the gym and a nasal cleaning system my boss recommended. I couldn't believe how much crap it drained out and eased the pain.

I did a 1/3 mile warmup and ran a mile with my daughter sarah timed as she has to hit 6:30 to be on Binghams track team. I had my watch beep every tenth of a mile and figured we had to hit 39 seconds per tenth.  We did pretty good for the first .4 mile and then she slowed way down. We had a head wind which didnt help so I told her to run right behind me.  We ended up hitting a 7:10 mile which I thought was ok. We shouldve warmed up more and went in the head wind at the start and im sure we wouldve snagged a good 20 seconds off.  I then went down to the Park Trail starting at 98th and ran south. I made it about a mile past 126th south and turned around back. I had a head wind the whole way out. after a mile of tail wind the freakin wind shifted and hit me head on the rest of the way back. I ran the 11 miles in 1:14.

Hey Walter. Interesting you should bring up the team thing for Boston. I was chatting with Dennis Simonaitis yesterday and thinking about getting a tough Utah Masters team together for the big USATF cross country meets this year. I would definitely consider the Boston thing. But whatever, it's important to think about stuff like this to keep things fresh and interesting.

Ran at the oval tonight and met up with Dennis Simonitis and Neal Gassman who are the fastest Masters right now and a force to be reconend with.  I did 10x 400's with them. We started with a 75 and then did 2 74's and then 3 73's 2-72's and a 71 and my last was barely a 70.  I felt like I was falling apart so I stopped at 10 and they  continued to do 15x400's. We Jogged in between each lap to give me 20 laps plus a 1.5 mile warmup and a 1.5  mile cool down. It was nice talking to both those amazing runners. when I wasnt panting that is.

Went to Murray and ran with the Runamoks group. We started with a warmup and then did some striders and then ran a few more miles and did 6x .35 mile repeats. I did a 1:33, 1:33, 1:33, 1:34, 1:34, 1:35.  We then ran a couple miles and did a 1 mile tempo at 5:18, with a 3:40 break and a 1 mile tempo at 5:38 in a bit of a headwind. We then ran back to Murray to make it 17.5 miles.  I saw Kim running the opposite direction and also Smooth and a few others that we came across. It was a good workout.

Im going to have to take the day off. Its actually on a monday which is the same day as Boston. So Ill get to run my own marathon in Utah.

It was bitter cold this morning and pretty windy. I started out more conservative than last year but the tail wind and slight downhill gave me a push.  There are some nasty steep pieces of hill in this race one right after mile 3 and one at 7 and one at 10.  I had an extremely tough time with the wind. It was slowing me to a 6:15 pace. Once I had the tail wind to my back I felt better. Mile 11 was my gut check though. I had a hard time from there on as my legs tightened up. I pushed as hard as I could to get it done though. I had a runner trailing me and I noticed he gained on me on the up hill stretches and wind which made me nervous. It was a good check on my progress for the year which im a bit behind but I will try getting back to it hard. I have some issues with my periformis that got worked on after the race and I wished I had more time because it felt good and then when he was done, it tightened back up.   I saw a lot of friends and family at the race and its put on very well by Lisa Dudley and Riverton City.  They gave out a really cool wagon wheel trophy that is massive!  I love it though. I also got a money gift card for first.  The course is a good gut check for those that arent used to any downhill.

Bec, Im back and working hard to get at it.

Nancy, it was good seeing you today on this cold windy day.

Steve, I can usually do good in cold but not wind.

Carina, Thanks, I hope to get back to full strength soon.

Rye, I wished it was faster recovery. I ran a 1:11 in October and im back to the drawing board. It is frustrating.

Smooth, I really despise wind. I can tolerate anything else.

TM, I need a lot more work. That guy was really good. I wished I had money to dish out every week for an hour of that. If you want to practice, ill be your guinnea pig! That guy was freakin' standing on me! lol I have some serious issues going on that I need to concentrate on.

Steve, you know we dont have an advantage with wind. I almost got caught on the long stretch into the wind. Im glad I had a tail wind the last 3 miles to help me put a gap on the other runners, I wouldve been in trouble for sure.

Rob, I turn on the 18th of April and Im after blood! lol I can tell you all are fearing me because im reading some amazing times from you and the rest of the old farts. lol

Allie, let the Wagon Wheel roll, let the wagon wheel roll! Thats a song from the 70's and now im really showing my age. ugh.

Kelli, Thanks! I heard you did pretty good yourself there! You are crazy! Thats what I like about you! haha

Rossy, I am not a hill course runner and definitely not a head wind runner. I hate to put my weaknesses out there so now Im going to have to perfect them.

Matt, I have battled long and hard and came to the conclusion im not going to run Striders this year. I am trying to get the nerve to do SLC if I can still.

I went and parked in the parking lot next to the zoo and did a 6 mile easy run on the Des news course from mile 16 to 20 and back up to the parking lot.  I noticed some cones and saw they were running a 10 mile race. I ran with the Runamok runners up Emmigration canyon 8 miles where I saw the first place runner coming down. I then saw a few runners and then I saw Allie. I hurried and grabbed a drink and then told the runamoks I was going to try and run a race pace with them. I took off and it was fun, I was running a 5:05 first mile and still hadnt caught Allie. I got to their mile 3 and saw her and Chad. It took another half mile to catch them. I ran with Allie and Chad for the rest of their race.  At about mile 6 I believe it was, Allie started pushing the pace or maybe it was me and I didnt realize it. She was really bookin' man! She has got some talent I will tell you! We passed a few runners and I could see the cop with his flashing lights and the overall runner was fading a bit. We were catching him but never got him. Ill bet if we had 3 more miles Allie would have won that race! I think she took 3rd overall and commanding 1st for women! Way to go Allie! Hope to see you at SLC half.  I had a great 8 mile race paced tempo run onto my long run of 6 rolling, 8 uphill, and 8 downhill. Very fun to do that!

Carina and my wife are friends so I guess Carina has been going off on how nervous she is, so I had to hear from my wife this morning how stupid us "runners" are, and why do we put this self-inflicted pain and anguish on ourselves.

Hummm, I didn't have a good answer!!

Tell your wife to start running and competing. lol We are a very bizarre people. However have you talked to an Ironman athlete, we are very normal next to them.

I got to the start and met up with Clyde and did a bit of a warmup with him and then Steve joined us. It was warmer today thank goodness. I saw all the fasties at the starting line and met a few that I havnt met in person before. I saw Rachel C. (my secret weapon) and could see she was a bit nervous but so are all of us secretly or not. I joked around with Craig Green when he asked me what my first mile was going to be. I said 4:50. But I actually wasn't far off I hit a 5 even and Rob was next to me when I got to mile 1 and I said woopsie! I had to much adrenaline going. I could see Steve ahead of me about 200 feet and I kept him at that distance to mile 4 where we have our first little uphill where we turn and see eveyone behind us. I was excited to see Clyde and cheered him on then I started seeing eveyone and I was cheering for them and when I looked in front of me Steve was right there. He later told me I psyched him out a bit by yelling at eveyone. I saw him surge after the uphill and just tried not go let him gap me too much. I passed Fritz at mile 8 on a downhill part and then immediately had my hip lock up on me. I kept pushing at tried not to think of the pain. I kept getting close to Steve then he would surge. I finally got to striking distance on the last hill stretch but as it went downhill he freaking came alive! I pushed as hard as I could but he held me off. It was great weather today. My ideal running conditions. It was my last race as a young 39 year old as I turn 40 on Monday. Maters here I come!

Today I ran 40 Miles for my 40th Birthday present to myself. Im sadistic I know! I started at 10 pm and ran 26.24 miles in 3:29.  It was really great weather about 50 degrees and no wind at all. Very quiet and peaceful. I tried to think about my life and every mile try to remember something that happened to me in my years growing up. Miles 1-6 I was in Ohio, 7-14 I was in Coeurdalene Idaho. Then 15-19 I was in Utah. 19-21 Munich Germany. Then 22 till now growing up in Utah. I had fun with this and actually caught myself laughing at some of the stupid things I did in my life, especially in my teen years. I finished my 26.24 mile run at 1:45 am this morning. I went to sleep and woke up to a rain storm. Ugh! I ran my last 13.76 miles in the dreaded rain.  I thought about how far 40 miles is. I can pretty much guarantee I ran by everyones houses today that is in the Southern Salt Lake area. Herriman, Bluffdale, Riverton, Draper, and South Jordan, Daybreak area, and a little bit in West Jordan.  This is something that was in the making for some time and luckily I didnt have to wait till I was too old to run! haha Im proud to see my accomplishment in my life from being paralyzed 18 years ago to being able to do this! I ran the entire 40 miles in 5 hours and 11 minutes.

I had a PT appointment last night at 4:30 and he did the Graston Technique on my achilles and it was a miracle im telling you right now! I could instantly walk up and down stairs afterwards. I went to the race with the mindset to not run hard, in fact the doc told me to rest and I thought id be alright running slow. So I paced a really good friend of mine Amy Fromm who was wanting to run a 1:50 but had strep and a sinus infection and even pink eye from the past week so I new it was possible but not on this course, it is very rugged! In fact I talked to Seth Wold after the race and he said the steep up hill parts he actually got to a walking pace.  Amy and I were definitely  walking up these parts. It is very scenic and you see Waterfalls and run through tullips and flowers and wow it is really breathtaking. Something I probably wouldnt notice as much trying to belt out a fast time. Amy did so well Im proud of her. She is the type of friend that makes you laugh and smile when your around her. Im trying to get her on this so she can keep track of her miles. The course is a very windy and curvy and hilly and turns at least 60 times in the race. Im not exaggerating either. I give props to the winner of the race who did a 1:11 I think. I probably wouldve been in a 1:14ish time im guessing. Courses like this really kick my butt. I had fun taking it easy and pushing Amy though. I could tell she wanted to walk and I wouldnt let her. I hope she talks to me again. haha  I made her sprint the last stretch to beat 2:08. She did so Im proud of that.

I actually avoided this race due to all of the turns and possible confusion. So no confusion, huh?

From Walter on Sat, Apr 30, 2011 at 15:08:47 from 74.82.64.34

I did too if I wouldve run it competitively. But it was very easily marked and you couldn't turn the wrong way they flagged it so you knew. But it was super hilly Julie!

From Rob on Sat, Apr 30, 2011 at 15:42:41 from 204.15.86.95

Someone beat Seth Wold? Regardless the time that's impressive. I should have ran it just for fun but had soccer games in the snow instead.

From Craig on Sat, Apr 30, 2011 at 16:08:42 from 174.52.32.193

Graston Technique- is that like scraping? I have some of those tools and I tried when I had achilles issues, but it didn't really help that much.

From Walter on Sat, Apr 30, 2011 at 16:20:32 from 24.2.66.36

Rob, Seth told me he was only at 20 mile weeks right now! wth? I guess thats how it is when you are 15 years younger. haha He did a 1:14 which is damn good for this course trust me! It was a cool little obstacle course! you run through tunnels of ivy and all around. You actually run dang near touching distance from the other runners in a zig zag pattern. You could easily cut 1.5 miles out just by ducking under the flags. lol

Craig, Yeah its like scraping and its hard to do it to yourself. You have to let someone do it because it hurts like a word im not allowed to say on here. Your tendon that runs through your achilles goes from your calf down and to your Plantar fasciatus. If you have a foot log you can roll under the arch of your foot and then take a roller to your calf to help your achilles. I was amazed at how it got rid of the pain honestly. I had like a jelly bean sized lump in there and he worked it out.

From steve ash on Sun, May 01, 2011 at 12:55:22 from 174.52.97.157

Walter, please be careful.. I have not run on mine in over a week and I still get this crinkling sting from scar tissue that re-opens every time I try to run. The big problem with this injury is that it doesn't have a good blood supply to support healing and recovery. This thing can rupture if you don't give it a chance to heal.

From Walter on Sun, May 01, 2011 at 13:03:48 from 24.2.66.36

I hear you Steve. Yeah it was high up on my achilles and now its lower. Im not going to run till after he tells me whats going on. I do have Provo half that im signed up for which I need to get in for the Circuit so im stressing now.

From Teena Marie on Sun, May 01, 2011 at 13:25:41 from 67.2.88.232

You know what I think. Like Steve said, you don't want this to rupture of become chronic. Achilles are so tricky, exactly for the reason that Steve stated. Just ask Paul (Rivertonpaul). He has been through SO much this past year and is now doing plasma rich platelet treatment (which is VERY expensive) and still has a ways to go before he will be able to run.

PLEASE be careful.

From Walter on Sun, May 01, 2011 at 18:40:45 from 74.82.64.37

I may take you up on that. Lol if it wasn't a circuit race I wouldn't worry about it.

From Steve on Mon, May 02, 2011 at 22:32:03 from 99.200.115.90

Here's my two cents on this Achilles tendon thing. I partially tore mine last year and it swelled up like a little golf ball. PT said no more running and it needed scraping. I could feel the scar tissue crinkle with every step. Instead, I got a pair of heavy, high heel trainers (Assics Kayano) "fat man" shoes and started doing long, SLOW mileage. I mean 9 min mile stuff. After two months it faded away. At our age, consistant long running seems to provide the best stimulus to heal. Course, you aren't old like me, yet..

From Walter on Mon, May 02, 2011 at 23:10:11 from 24.2.66.36

Steve, Yeah I hear you. I went to my PT to get scraped and it wasnt getting better. I promised him i would stop running for one week and go from there. I honestly feel like I can run after those appointments. I dont dare now though. I will ice it and use my roller a lot. I need to call you though so call me.

From Craig on Tue, May 03, 2011 at 09:55:39 from 174.52.32.193

Walter- I battled achilles issues for 2 years. I know people on this blog aren't all fans of Dr Toronto, but he told me that the problem with that area is that the blood supply is low, so the healing process is slow. He and Bill also told me that an inflamed achilles actually has a very low chance of fully tearing. The full tears almost always come from a single event where the area isn't inflamed to begin with (i.e. freak accident in a basketball game). So Toronto's advice is finally what saved me- use cool water or ice briefly after a run followed by heat to increase blood flow. Do not overstretch- that's a common problem people make and it just aggravates it. Use heat often during the day to keep the blood flow in that area high. Finally, start doing heel lifts on the stairs to strengthen it (as long as the pain is gone). I think you feel better after scraping because it increases the blood flow in that area. I know scraping is also good for removal of scar tissue. All that, along with less miles and more cross-training is how I finally killed it. Sorry for rambling....

From Craig on Tue, May 03, 2011 at 09:57:06 from 174.52.32.193

Oh- and a week off to get the inflammation out is a good thing. You'll be fine with some cross training.

The race was warm and we started out pretty fast and there were about 6 high school boys ahead. We got in the 3rd position right behind the 2 leaders. I saw them fade a bit before the second mile and then it went downhill and they pushed the pace more. Carina did great and I was really pushing her to under a 20 time and she nailed it! Great job! It feels good to help out while I'm on my down time and get a race under my belt at the same time. I really live to race.

I went up behind the Capital after work and started at the base of the canyon and ran up it 3.5 miles and about 1000' of elevation. Then as I turned around I saw a lady biking up the road and was swerving all over. She got up to me and was mumbling and incoherent but was pointing to the side of the road in the bushes so I thought maybe it was a Mountain lion or something. As I was looking to the right and running down the road I heard a hissing noise and looked down and right as my foot hit the road I was about 2' away from a rattler. He didnt coil up but I froze and backed away and around him. I have encountered enough of these pesky snakes. Im sick of these damn snakes on this damn trail. Very fun. Carina reminded me of my comment to her that i would like to run 1 to 2 miles of tempo and didnt do it so on the way home it festered in my head till I decided to just do it. I went to the Daybreak lake and while I was getting out of the car, Danielle bumped into me! She was on mile 2 of 10 and asked if Id run with her so I ended up doing 8 more miles with her. A total of 17. Fun day, nice and freakin warm. The way W likes it!

Ran up behind the Capitol after work. Started at the bottom of the canyon and went to the top which is exactly 5.66 miles from the gate. My stupid left achilles started bugging me! ugh neverending. I iced it and am resting from a long day.Oh I ran into another snake. Thats two for two SNAKEYES!  Am i lucky or what? If anyone wants to see a snake come run with me after 2 pm in City Creek. There are a lot!

I run that canyon a lot including last year when I was coming back from my achilles injury. The downhill pounding was definitely not good. An injured achilles remains weak and prone to re-injury for quite a while.

Extreme caution is advised!

From Kam on Mon, Jun 06, 2011 at 20:08:40 from 68.66.163.179

I love running up that canyon, but not coming down. I've never seen a snake. You are extra lucky.

From Carina on Mon, Jun 06, 2011 at 20:23:47 from 174.253.246.240

NO!! Rest that Achilles! Sounds like a good run other than that.

From Walter on Mon, Jun 06, 2011 at 20:50:10 from 166.168.19.82

Rob it started hurting about a mile from the top and only bugged me going up. down was ok till I had a flat spot. It's my left leg also which has never bugged me before. I'm getting over my right one.

Kam, I have seen tons of deer up it, a moose, and a tarantula spider. Yes you heard me right. I talked with the ranger at the bottom and they told me there are some up there.

From Walter on Mon, Jun 06, 2011 at 20:51:37 from 166.168.19.82

Carina, I love canyon running and it was crappy weather and that canyon blocks out the elements pretty darn good. I'm resting for sat I think.

So I came back from the doc. and he said I looked ok but not to push it in the half. He said to run 70% if I do which would be impossible unless someone ties a rope from me to the 7 minute pace group.  So here is what I decided. I am going to pace Carina to a 3:15 marathon time and all those that want to shoot for that time can join in!  This will help my training for the World Championships that Im preparing for. So let it be written, so let it be done.

This is my fastest marathon this year that Carina helped pace me in. I have no report that I could write that would take away from her report so go look her up and congratulate her!

It was good to see friends and foes, I think thats a good word. But if it isnt then its those that dislike me and jimmy crack corn...

I am amazed at how when I run with different people I learn so much! I would not have thought we wouldve pulled off a 3:15 with a half marthon time close to 1:41. Carina showed me different!  Good job girly!

Oh, I have to tell this quick story! I met a guy who had crocs on at the porta potti line and I asked him if he was going to run in them and told the story of Sasha running this race last year and doing a good time. He laughed and assured me no and he opened up his running bag and was getting ready for the shoe switch when...no shoes! He looked up with a sick look and said, "yep! Im running in Crocs!" I saw him at the finish and Carina and I asked him how he did and he laughed. He made it though.

Thanks Kelli! Now I hate to sound selfish to back out of trying to help Herriman this year especially with my daughter running but I feel I have a good chance of making a statement if I can take some things out of my life to help me get a running regime. Being on the injured list sucks too. Being able to help Carina hit a 3:15 made it worth it.

From RAD on Sat, Jun 11, 2011 at 16:53:57 from 98.202.17.113

Glad I got to see you Walter! Nice pacing, good course to neg split on. Oh, and I LOVE the crocs story! I saw Sasha up there and he was running in them again this year, so the guy had good company. I don't know if I would've made 26 miles in them.

How did your achilles hold up?

From Walter on Sat, Jun 11, 2011 at 22:46:28 from 166.168.229.220

TM, I shouldve let you tape me up before for sure. On the uphills it really twinged and then started feeling ok on the down if I didnt push off like im used to so the PT telling me 70% was smart because I let the down hill let me shorten my stride and run more flat footed. At the halfway point it was really hurting to the point of me making faces im sure because Carina told me to quit if it hurt that bad which theres no way I couldve. I ran through it hoping to break it up and It did and when I finished it didnt tighten up. so Ill keep icing and Graston technique for the next few weeks and start pushing hard for July 17th. Big Day!

I ran up to Herriman high school which is 4 miles from my house. I did a warmup run with a little push. I hit 27:38 for the 4.  Then I did 3 mile tempo coming down from the school to my house. I did a 5:29, 5:40, 5:38. Then a mile cool down but believe me I didnt cool down it was freakin hot out! Probably about 90 so it was pushed.  I got my team USA uniform today and wore it on my run and boy does it attract the sun. Its the 2008 Olympic singlet and short shorts. When I say short, I mean I havnt had shorts this short even in H.S. Oh well, at least the race starts at 5 am so no one can see me till i come in. Im getting nervous now! sheesh less than a month.

Wow, A PR! Finally got my half marathon PR this year with all the drama to my achilles and trying to gear up for the World Masters Championship marathon in July.  I feel great about my new best time and had a very well organized and scenic scenic scenic race! I tell you there is nothing better than to run next to a river. So fun!  I made my way up to the start on the buses with Carina and Cheryl. Cheryl is a cancer survivor which I didnt know because this race was very big into cancer. Hopefully they raised a lot to help out the cause. I got to the top and had just enough time to do the potti break, chat a little bit with Carina and Cheryl and then do a little filming for a documentary that Tracey and his Wife are helping me film. Its always good to get a perspective of the starting line and how nervous everyone is! So cool! The race started and immediately Brian Summers and I took a lead. Very steep the first part going out to the canyon road. Right after the 1 mile mark which we hit in 4:54 there was some serious water  running across the road. It was like a river I backed off and let Brian go through it first and then I attemted to jump it but landed in it. about 2-5" deep. So the next few miles we got to run with some sloshy shoes but it dried quickly mile 2 was 5:22 but still downhill but I think we were having a hard time breathing at the altitude mile 3 we hit 5:19 and I knew I could get closer to 5's so I started to push the pace. Brian was right with me just past 3 and when I pushed I couldnt hear him anymore so I started worrying about going to soon. 4 was a 5:03 and I felt better about that time. I figured then that I was feeling good and my breathing was right so i let it loose. mile 5 was 4:51. 6 was 4:53 and 7 was 5:05.  8 I hit 5:14 and could start to see the bottom of the canyon a bit now.  9 was 5:35. I hit a trail off from the road and I was reminded of the St. George Half trail where it has little ups and turns to throw your momentum off.  10 was 5:32 and 11 I did a 5:49. I started feeling sluggish and depressed then and had a bit of a hill to go up after being used to all the downhill.  Mile 12 was flat and I hit a 5:35.  I was excited when I got to 12.5 with a time of 1:07, I wanted to break 1:10 so I tried my best and pushed hard but the course came up long for me 13.26 is what I read at the finish with my Garmin 310xt.  It was great temps up there and lots of shade throughout.  I laughed at the finish when I saw Carina because she PR'd as well and was doing some retro dance moves I hadnt seen since high school! Great way to celebrate a PR for sure!  A special thanks to the race director for a very very good race! Its hard to be this good when you are starting these events! Also for Tracey Lee for going out of his way to get to the start so early on a Saturday to do some fliming!

Oh by the way, my prize was a trip for 2 to Zermatt Resort in Midway. It comes with Dinner, and 2 massages.  Fun fun race!

Son of a B it was hot today! I decided to run before I had scouts tonight because I dont sleep very well when I run at night. Plus since I get up at 4 am now to be to work at 5 it is impossible to get a run in unless I do it when I get home at 2. So i ran from my house down to the park trail and made it to mile 6 and the wind was brutal. So I turned around and it was great but so hot! I got a drink at mile 8 and then 10. I stopped at a maverick which required a key to turn on the spicket outside. I asked politely and he told me no. I said dude come on, Im not going to run away with the key I cant make it home without water. So he gave me the key and I took a freakin bath dang near on the lawn with their hose. lol  To to hot!

It was cool in the morning about 58 degrees. I did a warmup but immediately started sweating. Yuck. I lined up and the race started very very slow! I am not used to that but I didnt want to charge so I stayed back to mile 1 to see what our times would be. 6:15! Holy crap way to slow. so I sped up and got right up to the main pack and they were running a 5:40 pace which felt comfortable.  I stayed just behind the 3 guys in front within a hundred feet by myself.  No one was really close behind so I felt good. I did my first loop which hit mile 7 still behind and saw my family for the second time and felt pretty good. there were some sharp steep up hill pieces which I felt ok on the first 3 loops. My second loop put me right about mile 12 and I still sat right behind the leaders.  The third loop I couldnt find my drink that I put on the drink table and it bugged me but found it later down a few miles at the next station. They didnt label the stations from 1-5 like the boxes at the expo that I put them in. On a sharp turn I saw a runner from Columbia about 200 meters behind me about mile 15.  By the start of the 4th loop he was up to me. I wasnt fading at all and staying at a 5:45 pace.  I saw my family again and as the Columbian got next to me he passed me with a surge and I wasnt about to push my pace. I hit mile 16 and he was only 15 feet in front of me. He was waving me on to get next to him so I did. I really dont like doing this because I concentrate on them more than myself but I did it. We got to mile 18 and I heard another runner approach us. It was an Italian that I knew had posted a 2:27 time so he had a good strategy to set behind us and then go. I let him go as well as the Columbian. When I hit mile 19 there was a sharp up and the Columbian surged up it and that was it. I couldnt seam to go. I felt stomach acid big time and was afraid of puking on the bridge but I held it in until a porta potti. I jumped in it and let it all go. I should have done it in the grass because it was an unpleasant sight.  I got back out and felt ok but it only lasted a quarter mile. I really slowed down and couldnt get into a groove. 6:45, 7:15, 7:45 then started hitting 8's and 8:45's. I was so depressed, I couldnt seem to get moving no matter what! My legs werent really cramped up but my head felt like I had the flu. super hot. I kept slashing water on me and doing everything. I actually stopped at the stations and tried drinking more fluids. Nothing could help and I was just going to have to survive. Several people passed me in the last 7 or so miles and would cheer me on but it only depressed me more.  Im mad that things didnt go my way but I really enjoyed the atmosphere of fans yelling GO USA! Such a cool feeling I have to tell you! It was fun to cheer on the 70 year old runners as well. There was a 65 year old that passed me and he looked absolutely awesome!  I have a lot of wouldve shouldve couldves in this race but am glad I competed.

Congrats on representing the US at the race. You ran a smart race until your body had the issues it did, after that it is tough to recover. Well run, a marathon is a fickle beast that can change on you quickly and you do the best you can.

Be proud of being there and running to the max of what your body would allow.

Walter, sorry for the delayed response and what a brutal race! It's always 26.2 miles of potential disaster and we all have races that do not go well. If you are like me, you'll remember this one (not just because of the scale) but because how things did not go as planned more than the good/uneventful races. At the same time, this is what makes running fun and a challenge. Also, I read the news articles (Trib and Des News) and you are awesome and very inspirational! Keep inspiring and keep at it!!!

Met up with Kim Dion's running group of about 16 people. We Started up in the mountains somewhere an hour and a half drive from Calrsbad. It started at about 6000' and we ran Extreme trail mostly down for 8 miles and all up on the way back. It was some serious climbing! We walked a lot! to hard to run.I could still feel my legs from the marathon but it was a good arse kicking. I stayed close to Kim so no weirdos bugged us. lol We got to mile 15 with a mile left and ran smack dab into a bee swarm. Thousands of them! I went about 50' into them and had to turn around. They were attacking my sunglasses. Luckily one of the group had his vehicle on a road near there everyone opted to jump into his suv and ride back to the start. One of the runners got lost for an hour or so but was found and we had a good solid run.

Carina and I decided after we heard they started late to run to the finish and then come back and help other runners in. We saw James (Fiddy) from the blog and he was doing the same so he ran with Carina and I for a few miles and then turned around for Allie. I liked the last few miles on this course better than the American Fork half. But it was a muggier day today then when I ran in June. I loved both courses though. I saw Kelli when I got to the finish and it didnt register to me that there was a marathon going the same time. I thought she was doing a run like we were. I watched Justin (the winner) come in and then Jeremy and Rob crush a 1:15! Nice job! I then went back to the course and helped Esther in and then went back for Amy but couldnt find her. I really cant wait for my new job to begin so I can run in the morning again! I dread these heat killing runs! I took a water bottle with me this time which I dread but I found myself having to drink every mile from my house going up to Butterfield Canyon. It was around 7 minutes every mile going up. I walked to drink and ended up drinking the whole bottle by mile 7. It was a monument of a family that settled in Herriman just off 130th. I saw a boy playing soccer in his front yard and had him fill my bottle up with water for the run home. I stopped every mile to drink and kept running down this time and was getting close to 6:40 pace. When I hit mile 11 I decided to try and get under 6 minutes for the next 2 miles. I hit 5:59 and 5:32. I had to walk by this point as I was thrashed. I have a hard time running with something in my hands. It definitely slows me down. I jogged the last mile home and ran in 1:39.

From Walter on Tue, Aug 02, 2011 at 21:25:13 from 24.2.69.110

Nancy, its so much easier in the morning for sure. I cant wait to be able to try and BBK it up again. Maybe in a week? who knows. Depends if my first assignment for my new job is going to be in Wyoming or not. I let myself go though so running in the heat will get my body weight back to normal. lol You know Im kidding right?

From Carina on Tue, Aug 02, 2011 at 23:37:25 from 204.15.86.83

Running in the heat is killer. Way to get the miles in, and smart to bring water :)

From Steam8 on Tue, Aug 02, 2011 at 23:41:48 from 166.70.55.77

REALLY? You run slow with a water bottle? 1:39 for 14 miles! I ran as fast as my legs could go to get 1:38 for 13miles. You are so stinking fast! Nice job...nice run!

From Walter on Wed, Aug 03, 2011 at 00:08:32 from 24.2.69.110

Thanks Carina. I would've dropped like a fly without it.

Amy, it sloshes around and gets me out of rhythm as soon as I ditched it on mile 12 that's when my time dropped. I need to find one that doesn't bug me or have someone follow me and feed me grapes and juice.

From Steam8 on Wed, Aug 03, 2011 at 00:11:59 from 166.70.55.77

Haha! If you find someone sweet enough to do that, give me their number! ha! I agree...I hate carrying water. It bothers me and slows me down (if possible). I don't really think I could get much slower! :(

From Walter on Wed, Aug 03, 2011 at 23:03:10 from 24.2.69.110

I ran from my house and did a 20 mile run today 10 was up to Butterfield Canyon and there was a bike race going on that started at Herriman High School. I carried water for 7.5 miles and then ditched it and kept going to mile 10 which was .25 miles up the Canyon thank goodness. I hit 5500' Elevation. Then it was a nice all down hill drop from there to 4400' at my house. I shouldve left earlier cause it got hot. Saw my neighbor Telisa and ran and talked with her a bit. Then tried to hit under 6 minute pace the last few miles but wasnt happening. Finally a good mileage week for me without issues.

Went to the base of Butterfield and did 5 up and 5 down. Started at the base at 5400' Elevation. Mile 5 was at 7030'! What a climb! The first few miles coming down were so steep i had to force myself to run slower but still hit 5:30's my 5 coming down were 5:47, 5:33, 5:30, 5:27,and 4:58. The last mile had some good drops but let me get in a rythm like American Fork Canyon Half was. Good Workout. Oh I suppose you want to see my uphill times? ok 8:01, 8, 8:25, 8:54, 9:50.

ran 14 miles late this evening. Ran up to Daybreak and picked up Danielle, who I havnt been able to run with for months because of my work schedule.  She is doing SGM and TOU half as well.  We ran  a loop around the lake plus a few to  put me at 8. Then I  went from her house  back around the lake and made my way to Telisa and Mikes house who is helping me sell a 2006 VW Passat. I drove it  the .25 miles home and then had to finish the .25 to make my 14.

I met Paul Peterson at 8 am at his house. Paul was the 3rd USA runner to finish at Boston with a 2:17 time. We ran from his house up Smithfield Canyon until the trail got washed out. I. think it was around mile 9. Then back down. At mile 14 we did 4 miles tempo in 5:30 pace. Then 2 cooldown miles.

Met with the famous BBK runners this morning at 5:15 and did a 3 mile warm up. Then another mile on the track with 4x100 sprints and then did 4x800s. 2:26, 2:32,2:35,2:32. Then had to go to work.  I could tell I was excited to do these 800s from my first one.  I hope to be able to bust out a 2:26 marathon! Sweet! As per Yassos method. But I could see my average for 4 is 2:31. So Ive got more work to do. Fun to see those Butt Kickers! Its been a while!

Went to Liberty park and did 8 more miles. 1.5 warmup then 2x800s (2:32, 2:36) then did progressive running afterwards. I did my 3rd loop in 7:50 and my 5th loop in 6:34 pace. Very hot out but glad I got it in. Tons of runners in the park today! And the water fountain saved my butt!

I wished I could do these splits in the evening without trouble.  Oh by the way...I saw a huge Crawdad along the river on the asphault. It was a baby lobster! about 6" long.  A real beauty! Ok I made it home finally. I went up to the race start with my wife Misty and Daughter Sarah and inlaws. Bill, Charity, Sandee, Debbie, Beckie and a neighbor.  We did our waiting around and then I did a mile warmup. It was unusually warm up there. I forgot my warmup  clothes and watch so I lucked out on freezing like last year. I found Paul and lined up with him and chatted a bit. So since my watch was left, I had a plan to just try and run this race by feel. When I say that I mean, I will push myself and give myself a bit of leftover for the start. I did this and I went through the first mile 5 or so seconds behind Paul. I knew I was in the high 4's but didnt ask as I was just behind the main pack that had started to spread already at this mile. Mile two I think I was near 25 or so seconds behind Paul. I knew he wanted to do a 1:05 so in my mind I thought if I could stay with in losing 20 seconds or so a mile I would be right near the 1:10 mark.  I felt really good but felt really thirsty so every water station I really drank as much as I could grab. I was in 5th overall behind a runner from Orem area to mile 3. I passed him at this point and could tell he was trying to stay with me so I did a 25 second push and I couldnt hear him after that. I knew he would be there close so I started concentrating on my form and pushing as hard as I could on any downhill stretch. These are my strong points on this course. I got out of the canyon and had a glance to see behind me and saw that I had made up about 300 yards on him so I knew he was still within striking. I dread this section for some reason every year Im not sure why but I just cant keep my leg turn over going. I got to mile 11 which I was saving everything I had left to go up it. When I looked on a turn my gap was shortening. I thought Id take it a bit easy because I really am not in uphill running shape.  I got to the last up and he was only a block behind me. I turned and hit the last straight and used the downhill to help me go as hard as I could. This helped me increase the gap and I eased into the finish. 1st for Masters with a course record.  4th overall.  I talked with Steve after and chatted with him and a few other runners.  Oh I cant forget I ran back to help my wife in.  I got in 6 more miles plus my mile warmup to make 20. Great race, I love this one and never miss it every year.

Smooth, I was so proud of My daughter for her PR and too see the wifey run it.

Steve A, I hope to peak around SGM. That would be nice.

Paul, no doubt! Especially in a marathon. It's so mental. I was thinking about how some of my faster times have been when I'm not looking or Ragnar races when I'm not guaging myself off of other runners. It's crazy.

She wasnt there so I kept running to her house and the lights were off so I figured she slept in. I did my first 2 miles in 20 minutes! My last 3 miles were in 7:30 pace though. I need ice.

I did another 10 miles on my bike and my right knee was thanking me for it.  I did 20 minutes in ice and wow what a difference that makes. I wanted to run another 5 or so but my body is telling me no.

Met near my house at a church with the BBK runners.  I did a 3 mile warmup and then they planned a 6 mile tempo run but I didnt have time so I cut it to 3 miles. I guess I did more of a progressive run than tempo. I did a 6:01, 5:51, 5:34. Legs are still tight as can be. I feel better though from yesterday.  Got to see Becca for the first time in a while. Nice to see her out doing the BBKing! lol I talked with Dean and found out his son is in my ward now. He bought the house that I owned the lot on from back in 2004. I also talked a bit with Rachel who is ramping up the miles this week! Good run!

I ran 6 miles on my lunch break around Liberty park. 4 loops on the wood chips and then an extra .25 to hit 6. Very hot!

I biked to the trax line and then from the trax line to my house. 10 miles total.

Went with Misty to my favorite course for a long run to mimick the St. George marathon course. It starts at the Capitol and you run the horseshoe to 11th ave then East to Shriners Hospital and then back to City Creek canyon and up to the top then back down to the Capitol. I ran alone and by the time I hit the canyon the sun was up so I made my way up it and there wasnt anyone up there which was odd because there are usually tons of runners and bikers up it on Saturday early.  Going up was 2000' incline and I was averaging about an 8:15 pace. Coming down I hit my last 7 miles in: 6:15, 5:40, 5:52, 5:55, 5:44, 5:43, and 5:23. It was colder up the canyon which I love so I didnt feel any fade like I do with the heat.

From Walter on Mon, Sep 05, 2011 at 00:27:33 from 24.2.69.110

Think of it as an early taper. You have busted out so many marathons that the rest will help. Once you get the ok then just concentrate On some tempo runs to sting the legs and help keep muscle memory.

From Carina on Mon, Sep 05, 2011 at 00:42:36 from 204.15.86.83

I took the bus up with Danielle and Smooth, Rachel, Becca, Tina and some of their friends. I went right to the elite area and got in the porta jon line and talked to Lisa Madsen and gave her some pointers. Those lines were long this year, they need to get more jons or lower the elite field. I saw Kelly and Scott and a few others and then was summoned by St. George Running Center team to get my butt over to the start. I hate waiting to long at the start but there was a lot of faces I hadnt seen in a while so I did my catching up. It was good to see the usual SG runners like Clyde, Steve, Amber, Marci, Dave etc. sorry if youre in the etc group. I made a game plan to work with Jeff, and Ben to run together for a 2:30 time. I really felt I could do it.  I had some mental issues of stress from the night before like my baby taking my garmin watch out of my running bag and my shorts. I usually put a few shorts in but he took my favorite ones out. The other was car issues, we had to borrow my dads car which started the stress. a 2006 VW Passat. I went to take my water bottles to the packet pickup and got their to late so I tried to figure out how to get them to someone. In the meantime I locked my wallet in the car so I went out to get it and realized the keyfob wasnt working. I paid 55 dollars to a tow truck who happened to be in the parking lot which pissed me off but I was trying to eliminate stress not fester on it. I ran in and got my packet right at 9. No chance for looking at any booths and buying a pair of shorts so I left it at that. Back to the start. We took off with a first mile of 5:48 I think it was and I felt really good. There was 3 or 4 fast runners ahead of the main pack which I ran in. They were talking and having a good time and joking around which was fun. The first little hill we came to around mile 3 I think it was I caught myself slowing a bit and they said where did Walter go? I said im right behind you! Im old and my 40 year old legs dont go up these hills like I used to.  That created a chuckle at my expense. We stayed together until the big hill at Veyo and the pack pulled away from Jeff and I. We knew we were ok with 6:40 ish for a few miles so we took it fairly easy. I kind of pushed it a bit around 9 and Jeff didnt respond so I panicked a bit because the main pack had a half mile lead at that point.  I later talked to Jeff who told me his stomache was churning which is not fun.  I decided to try and work on getting the pack again and I was alone, with a bit of head wind and pushed the pace to mile 16. I started picking off stragglers from the pack there and felt really strong besides a mess up on the clock. I didnt have a watch or anyone to tell me my splits and thought I was at mile 16 when I was at 15. The clock said 1:28:45 which made me excited. When I got to mile 16 it was at 1:33 and change. That depressed me because I knew I had to be pushing close to 5:30 or better on the rest of the downhill. I guess I let it get to me because I was at 1:58 at mile 20  which meant I had to have a 32 minute 10k. Not now on these legs. The heat really ripped me a new one at this point and found myself fading and getting passed by runners which has a severe effect on my psychy in a marathon. I cramped up at mile 23 and used that last downhill to keep going but once it flatted out a bit I had a bystander rub my thigh because I was in pain. I sort of hobbled in the last few miles and called it a day.  I ended up winning the Masters Murdock Cheverolet 100 dollars for the fastest old Please follow Fast Running Blog policy regarding vulgar language in Salt Lake County! Ye haw! Thanks Kelly for calling me and telling me that. I shouldve stayed for the awards. I also got my 400 bucks from top 10 from last year also so I ended up with 500 for my troubles to stimulate the gas station, tow truck, ihop, shopping mall(my daughters) Jiffy lube and a disgusting buffet my family all got sick at called Best Buffet. Its not Best or at least its not better than Chuckorama. lol

Walter, it was a pleasure running with you again. I wish we could have worked together the whole way to keep us on track, but we each had our own issues at different points in the race to cause us to separate. If we could have stayed together...who knows! It was a tough day out there for us 2 old farts, hard to keep up with the younger guys and former winners of this race.

Keep running strong. Hope work continues to go well and the family stays well.

We will keep in touch and get our plans together for Boston.

It's so nice to read all your guys race reports, working away, while I'm taking some time off playing in the pool! I have no problems with buffets. I like to take the food from around the edges of the pans where it has started to change color. You know how the macaroni gets that brown tinge? Good stuff.

Good race Walter. I know you are right at that edge of the 2:30. Watching you clean my clock at the TOU Half made me certain of that. Everybody talks about race day and training, but for most of us a fast marathon is about getting lucky with the family, work, health and million other higher priorities. I'm looking forward to some races together next year.

From Carina on Mon, Oct 03, 2011 at 19:12:23 from 204.15.86.83

Really not bad for an old guy ;) Maybe it's a good thing I didn't run this one, if the heat didn't make me sick I'm pretty sure seeing everyone puking would have! Great job still pulling out a great time with all the stress before hand, and all the troubles during the race!

Oh, and you don't get your winnings until the next year? Weird.

From Walter on Tue, Oct 04, 2011 at 00:35:36 from 97.149.112.158

Steve. I totally agree with you! I had a hard time this year keeping balance of all the above subject you stated. When I do get the balance then I will be back to my 2:30. Thanks!

Jake, I fell way off my top ten projection but enjoyed running with friends and supporters.

Carina, it's weird to see some not get affected at all like Danielle Johnson who won AF and other guys that had a hard time last year with the heat and dominate this year. I know I'll be better with a more positive outlook on life. That's what it's all about right?

Yey a computer! Didnt think Id see one of these for a while here in Wyoming. Little America has nowhere to run my friends! Very Cowboy friendly. I ran on a paved road for a half mile then went on a dirt road for a mile and a half till it dead ended into a sheep hearders camp and I swear I heard a banjo so I turned back for the hotel and finished on their crappy treadmill. Why do hotel treadmills only go 10 mph? Ill have to raise the incline to compensate I guess. Dont blame me when I bust this machine! It doesnt know what its in for. I have several weeks left up here and the elevation is the only cool think to brag about.

Met Amy's (co worker) running friends up at Suncrest and we ran down to the Legacy Center in Lehi. I met Erica Roberts who knew me somehow and antoher Amy whos husband manages the Tri center. His name is Keb. I ran with him and Russ, the race director of the BYU-Utah relay. We did a 6:55 average for the 10 miles. I did a 1:08. we did a 5:45 last mile which felt good but my legs were tight from SGM still. Erica gave me and Amy a ride back up to my car and told me she knew me from being friends with Carina. Small world our little running community is! She is a riot though, I was laughing at her comments. She called Suncrest Bitch mountain. I have to clean the gatorade out of her truck i spit up.    So it was a great little after burner SGM run. The elevation was 6100' up at Suncrest. It was like we were in Park City. Right in the clouds. Ill have to see if I can figure out how to put her pic from her FB on here! Its insane up there. Great run though I know my legs wont be healed for SoJo marathon. I will have to see how it goes.

I met Steve and went up to the start, our bus got lost for 20 minutes. At the start I saw and met up up Amy and Stacy. It was good to finally meet them. I think I talked to Ron but wasn't sure. I started out good, a little slower than I did at St. George. I figured it would help save my legs at the end. I ran a mile with Kurt and hit a 5:50 which he thought was too fast and told me I could go. Mile 2 was a 5:40 and 3 was 5:30. 4-7 were a good climb. I did 2-6:22's. Then a 7:09. Then I got back into a 5:45 pace. I slipped to a 6:08 pace at about mile 16 which was kind of early on. I saw Kelli at the soccer park. I was starting to feel it good. I made it to mile 20 which runs by my neighborhood and my wife and kids gave me a bottle of Cytomax. I stopped and drank half it and felt great to mile 21. Then I got passed by the first place guy. I had a death march from then on. I barely kept under 8 pace. It was too much to soon from SGM two weeks ago. I took 2nd overall and made $200 bucks for my lagoon trip with the family next week! :)

One embarrising part I should mention is I collasped at the finish line from severe leg cramps. I couldnt freaking stand up on my own. I was carried to the med tent and they forced me to drink this salted down gatorade 4 cups of it or it was an IV which I didnt want. I was a bit dehydrated.

Oh goodness Walter! Quite the race. I was sitting at the soccer game just waiting for the first runners to come (sad, I watched more of that street than i did the game, BAD MOM!) When I saw the first runner, I thought, "Is that Walter??? NO, it couldn't be. He just ran St George!" So, I jumped up and ran over there and, sure enough, there you were. YOU ARE CRAZY!!!

Congrats on the great finish, $200 is not shabby and you held off MANY other men. Bummer he caught you but way to hang in there.

How do you like the course? I am just really unsure about it.

It's very technical. In my mind I thought I had it made till I slowed to an 8 pace At mile 21. It had some uphill in bad spots like mile 17 and mile 19-20. The head wind was hard also.

Ok so, I was in charge of pacing this crazy race a couple of months ago and so I took the challenge of finding awesome friends and runners to help organize pace times of 1:30 every ten minutes to 3 hours. There were some awesome friends on here that helped. Kelli, Rachel, Rob R., James, Allie, Andy B., Tom and Kim Lee, and yours truely. Ok So the race had some serious trouble with packet pickup. The company that sorts out the data from registration failed horribly as they lost info on a couple thousand names of runners. Ooops! So, as you can imagine, packet pickup turned into a complete joke. Im sure he learned his lesson on using them again. So I got my pacers organized a couple of weeks ago and felt really good and added a few later on but it worked! I asked Rob about ideas of pace bands as I knew this course to be fast for the first 4 to 5 miles. I knew that a flat pace wouldnt work as it would make my pacers go slow at the start and all out in the last miles. Not good for most runners who are wanting to stay with an experienced pacer. Kelli told me she had noticed how Clif Bar pacers do that and it is impossible to stay with them. So Rob got the course tool out and went all out so I officially made him my Course Tool Stud! OMG what a great job he did! Everyone of my pacers were right on! So, back to the story here I wanted to share. I had some guy named Luke Wagner who was a clif bar pacer try to insist that I do a flat pace and I told him it wouldnt work. He mustve got offended by this so he started sending me emails which I still have, if you want to see them I can forward them to you. He told me what an idiot I was and that I would fail and I responded back to him that he wouldnt be pacing my 1:30 group or any at all for that matter so he started emailing my pacers negative (and im  being modest here) messages to everyone telling them Im no longer in charge.  Kelli called me up and told me that a couple of days before the race so I sent him my final email telling him if he showed up to packet pickup or the starting line and tried to interfere I would have him escorted out. I actually had the number to the cop at the top so I could and wished he wouldve showed like he said but didnt. I warned Allie and James who were pacing the 1:30 group about him and luckily he didnt show. He actually told me he wanted to fight me so I obliged him and said Id be there!  He sent another email after the race telling my pacers they failed horribly and wow did he get an earful from some of them! So funny! If you guys know him personally I would really like to know why he is acting this way.  Ive never had to deal with someone like that. really? Competing for a pace group? Bring it! I am competitive. lol

I want to seriously thank my pacers though as they did top notch! I had tons of compliments from runners which makes me feel good and I have to pass it on to you guys as well! Kelli helped me out a lot at packet pickup and Rob, omg I cant thank enough. He saved the day. Rachel helped in the chaos at packet pickup as well.  Allie and James were so into their pace group that they got engaged over it! Ok so maybe thats not how it happened but it would make a great story right? Tom and Kim came in right on cue and had a lady that was so excited to hit that time that I think she wanted to bake you guys a cake or something! I told her to make sure she left a comment on the website!  Andy I cant forget either! Such a great job.  So all in all thank you guys and Michael the race director already told me we would be his official pacers! Now I can start squeezing him for some rewards to you guys for helping. Thank YOU!  I had fun!  I will do this again!

Thanks Walter! It was a blast, I had a great time! There is a HUGE crowd in that 1:50 group and they were fun to run with! It reminds me why I love racing when I pace, seriously.

Way to hang in there with the chaos. And those pace bands were awesome, totally could not have paced this right without it! People mocked us at the beginning for holding back, but they were not laughing when we passed them later.

From Walter on Sun, Oct 30, 2011 at 22:51:46 from 24.2.69.110

Kelli, you are right! The course tool worked good. Luke told me it was my grave for doing that and we sure showed him! I had two comments today on your pace group from dailymile.com runners. One is Angela and the other is Julia. They did a 1:52 and 1:53. They said you were amazing and they had fun with you but couldn't hold on the past 3 miles. That is what it's all about!

Thanks for letting me be part of your little group. We are so cool.

I really don't get why anyone would think a flat pace is a good idea on a course like that, I was worried that I didn't have us going out fast enough.

I took it way to personal and had to threaten him with a lawsuit and restraining order to get him to go bug someone else. I'm glad we had a good experience though! Thanks again and Ill keep you in the group for sure.

Matt, send me your email and I'll put you on the list. Tell me what time you are comfortable pacing as well. I have St. George half in January to pace and then 3 more halfs in the spring and summer plus I may have top of Utah full as well.

Met up with Danielle at Daybreak lake and did 10 windy miles. I have been up in Opal Wyoming the past month so my running has been horrible. I intend to get into shape now and shake the cob webs off.

I went to my sis in laws stake 5k. I took the family to do it. I met Amy, a friend of mine and chatted with her a bit. I ran a mile warmup and then the race got started. I did my first mile in 5:18 and had 2 kids on my side. They took off and got about 15 yards instant on me. I reeled them back in by mile 2 and then they surged again. There was some uphill grade that slowed me to a 5:40 2nd mile and then when it flattened out I pushed as hard as I could but they did as well. I ended up 3rd. I won a Cornish Game Hen.  The first place got a turkey and second got a Chicken. lol. The winners ran for UVC of course! lol I needed that, I havnt run a 5k in a while.

Thanks Amy! I really hate 5k's I don't know how I can run a half marathon in a faster pace than a 5k.

Lot's of Amy's. Cornish game hen.hilarious. No mesquite marathon for you today? LOL

From Walter on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 21:44:06 from 24.2.69.110

Nope. I'd rather run a marathon on a treadmill like Rob did. Lol

From Rob on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 21:53:27 from 204.15.86.95

It's over rated. I didn't win any foul, and no metal.

From Walter on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 21:55:26 from 24.2.69.110

I have a hard time running 4 miles on a treadmill. There is no way I could do a full marathon on one.

From Rob on Sat, Nov 19, 2011 at 22:04:44 from 204.15.86.95

Oh, I meant fowl. Oops!

Sure you could, just run 4 miles not quite 7 times.

I met Danielle halfway this morning and we went up to the lake and around and then to her house I dropped her off and came home. My first mile was hell. I have issues with both sides of my periformis and it hurts to rotate my legs and lift them. I rolled them and iced them and im sick of seeing doctors on it and it not being resolved so im going to push through it just like I did with my injuries from my wreck. Im flipping off my own body!

Go for it Walter! You did it once and I'm sure it will work its way out again. You know your body best and when the docs can't answer the questions, sometimes it's best to just do what YOU need to do!

Yes Rachel, I'm going to prevail! Bust through this pain and gear up for Boston!
