Ok I woke up at 4:15 am this morning and drove to the bus pick up. It was slow getting on but made it up there. Grouped up with Fast running blog/St. George running team and the weather was nice. This was my first time on this coarse and it always makes me nervous as I didnt look at a map at all on this race. The start was blistering fast. Jeff shot out like a cannonball! Didnt see him after the 2nd or 3rd mile. My first mile was a 5:13 which I actually thought would be faster. I was around 8th or 9th place. 2nd mile was a 5:21 still downhill and still in 8th place. 3rd mile was still some downhill and hit a 5:24. 4th mile was 5.12, 5th was 5.33 and then the hill came and I dropped two spots to 6th overall right behind Adam and Chad. 6th was a 5.49 due to the incline and 7th was 5.10. We were off the highway at this point back on the trail and I noticed one of the three in the first group had dropped off a little and Adam and Chad and I worked hard to catch him but didnt have enough trail in the end. It ended up being Sasha who I was surprised to see running after a brutal Des news race recently. (At least it is for me Sasha, that is a hard race) So my 8th mile was 5.33 and 9th was 5.37. I was fading a bit and feeling fatigued. 10th was a 5.40 and I felt good at this point so I tried to make a push and only made it about 100 yards when my gut started acting up. Due to the lack of Porta jons on the coarse and at the finish I didnt want to make my finish in poor taste if you know what I mean! So I figured Id just hang on to 6th and if I could maybe do 1 mile push to catch Chad. 11th was a 5.38 and 12th mile was a 5.49. As I got back on the river trail I took a right turn and went the wrong way for a 100 feet before a lady told me I was going the wrong way. I turned around and went the other direction but lost sight of Chad and I had wondered if I was going the right way or not!? I kept going and then finally saw an arrow and when I looked at my watch it said 13.1 miles on it so I knew I was close. I sprinted the last leg and my finish time from my watch was 1:13:23. My 13th mile was 6 even from messing up and my last sprint on my watch was .26 with a 1;13 which is faster than my speed workout quarters. The Bloggers did a 1-6th place sweep! I told Sasha I had the most pressure on my shoulders because I had to keep everyone else behind me! lol Ok Not a bad day to PR!

Great job Walter! Good seeing you again, too. Keep up the solid running and see you at SGM.

From walter on Sat, Aug 09, 2008 at 14:04:09

Yeah Dave, I have to admit I got excited when I thought you were the one that faded a bit. Too bad, I will get you my pretty! And your little dog....

From MarcieJ on Sat, Aug 09, 2008 at 15:41:14

Nice run today Walter! So is that a PR for you then? Thats a smokin time! Wait to go!

From JohnA on Sat, Aug 09, 2008 at 16:30:26

Great run. That is amazing fast.

From Jody on Sat, Aug 09, 2008 at 17:33:43

Congrats! Way to get a PR! Not a bad way to end a tough week.

From JD on Sat, Aug 09, 2008 at 17:38:24

Man you guys are fast!

From cody on Sat, Aug 09, 2008 at 18:23:38

Sweetness! Nice splits!

From Andy on Sat, Aug 09, 2008 at 18:46:37

Excellent race. Way to hold off the rest of the field and secure an FRB sweep. Are you running the Park City marathon?

From Adam RW on Sat, Aug 09, 2008 at 22:26:12

Walter, I was surprised and glad to see you at the start. You ran a great race and keep up the pressure no matter what comes your way.

From Jon on Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 10:44:39

Nice job, Walter- you are a racing machine! Every week, baby!

From walter on Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 12:23:51

Marcie- Yes it is a PR for me which is nice for the crappy training ive put in. That was the fastest and steepest half ive run. It was similar to the start of Des news marathon. I couldnt believe how fast Jeff, Dave and Sasha started out! They looked like Gazelles runing from us Lions!

JohnA-Its amazing how you run faster than you ever have and look at how many people are still ahead of you. It gives you hope.

Jody- This is a great year for PRs huh!? Pretty soon you'll be wearing the colors! Wouldnt that be awesome!?

JD-Thanks alot when can you join us?

Cody- I just pretended you were next to me on your bike. Pretty soon you wont need that Raleigh to pace me!

Andy- I had a few guys chomping on my heals trying to bust up the 6 sweep. No, im not going to do the PC marathon. Im not ready right now. Im going to do TOU half instead.

Adam- Whatever you were on I want some! Its not fair when you dont share! Thats my new motto!

Jon- I definately could feel the effects of that 10k last week especially on those first few fast miles. It was all I could do to keep up to Adam and Chad. I kept waiting for you to wizz by me and thank goodness it didnt happen. You should run this race next year it is right up your alley!

From Lucia on Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 12:29:38

Nice work Smokin' Wall-e! You are a fast and mean running machine! Heep heep hooray! Give me a W!... hehehe... Ok that's enough...

From walter on Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 12:57:47

Lucia- How did that feel? Running vicariously fast!? That better not be my nick name you came up with. Thanks for the cheer. Are you sure you werent on the cheer squad in HS and College? lol

From josse on Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 13:00:20

Great job Walter, it is always nice to talk with you. It is cool to see a clean sweep like that.

From walter on Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 13:15:03

Josse-It is always to to talk to you also! Ill have to come get the famous knot release massage your famous for! I know you may not have felt good yesterday. I actually didnt either thats why when Michelle asked if I wanted to do a cool down with her I couldnt. There were no portapottis at the finish at all! Whats up with that? I had the worst stomach pain at the end and could barely walk around. Let alone run a cool down. So dont take it personal you or Michelle.

From Lucia on Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 13:48:24

It felt great Walter, though I tried to tell you not to go the wrong way and you wouldn't listen - next time, don't ignore me, ok?

From walter on Sun, Aug 10, 2008 at 17:24:17

Lucia- Yeah, I had a feeling that was you, you crazy kid! Next time Ill head to it ok!? Did you hear any crazy talk in your mind on your bike? You just never know. Keep up the healing. Oh by the way I have your 6th is it or am I on 7? anyway the 6th recovery tip from WB's 12 step program is Volunteering. Its always good to keep up with whats going on out there and that'll give you the want and need to blast out of the shoot when your healed. God Bless!

From camilla on Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 01:42:47

So you live in S Jordan now? That is cool, I served my mission in Anaheim CA spanish speaking. It was awesome. I figure if I can make it to the end of my mission, which I did, then I can do anything. If you ever have any thoughts for me, let me know. You are an awesome runner!

From walter on Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 02:15:34

Yeah, its hard to serve a mission and its hard to run a half. You just have to take one step at a time. Training is the same. The more dedicated you are the more success you will have. I go up to Logan quite a bit and know a few talented runners up there. In fact, im going up to run the TOU half marathon even if your not ready, you should come out and cheer on everyone. Then talk to the ones in the fast running blog jerseys and you will be hooked! I can surely give you tips from my experiance as well as others on this blog. Its amazing the help and support you get and then you meet them in person and its like you're best friends.

Great race Walt! Good luck at the TOU HM!

From RiverotonPaul on Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 12:49:56

Great run. And as always, thanks for your blogs.

From walter on Mon, Aug 11, 2008 at 13:13:09

Jeff-Thanks, it was a wake up call for me to get my mileage up right now! every little uphill kicked my butt which made me realize I must get more quality miles in. Of the subject, did you see the USA 4x100 swim? Amazing! Im so exited for the olympics its a boost for me right now.

Paul-No problem for the blogs, thats why we are here. Thanks for the comments.

From Superfly on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 14:14:38

Walter sorry I"m so behind on last weekends blogging. Good job in the half. Sucks about the wrong turn. You and I could write a puking and wrong direction book. I think that running half marathons is harder than serving a mission...

From walter on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 17:17:30

Clyde, That is funny! Its about even for me. You spend lots of time working and then it all comes down to seeing your work actually pay off and then you want to do it again! But better the next time.
