I went to Riverton High School this morning and did a light speed workout.  I ran 2 miles to warmup. Then I did 8x200's and 4x400's.  I felt alright, I see my surgeon today and I have got alot of questions now because obviously my running hard doesnt seem to bother it.  Maybe a marathon would who knows.  Ive never had to deal with anything like that.  Ill let you all know whats up. keep on it!

I hope it all works out for you today.

From walter on Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 09:25:57

Thanks Adam, I got into St. George yesterday finally and now this! Perfect timing huh!?

From Adam RW on Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 11:06:32

Congrats on the entry and keep in mind that St. George is still a life time away. You have such a huge base that a few weeks off wouldn't be the end of the world. I'm hoping that if you do need surgery that you can do it ASAP and with your obvious physical fitness and "freakish" body I'm guessing your recovery would be a lot quicker than what they are telling you. Remember doctors base their timelines and on population averages and we, as runners, are anything but part of the average population.

From Walter on Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 16:50:10

Ok I talked to the doc and he says its average size and needs surgery, however I could get away with letting it go a few months if I want. Or get it done and over with and try to recover asap. But you know me, a race every weekend will be out of the picture until the end of august. I have alot to think about so hopefully its the best decision. I like the average population bit! very funny

From jtshad on Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 17:31:26

So which way are you going to go?

From Walter on Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 17:39:15

I think im going to lower my races to provo river half, tou half, tou full and St. george. then go get the surgery. thats if there is no pain. If it gets worse, then I can get in asap to have this done and wait 4 weeks and just train for St. george. He said its non threatening right now so I can just watch it close and be carefull not to lift heavy objects..Yeah right! but Im not going to push it. I will be carefull.

From Kim on Thu, Jul 10, 2008 at 20:48:19

Hey Walter,

I'm glad you finally got into St. George! I'm glad you aren't having to do the grand slam to get in, especially with the problems going on right now!

Tom just told me that a guy we know ran the marathon with a hernia one year and ran a PR! He said he had to pop it back in every once in a while. (eewww!) I guess he got it fixed after the marathon and all has been well. So here's to a hernia PR!

From Walter on Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 09:23:28

Hey Kim, that is sooo disgusting! I guess its just my intestines trying to come out right. Soo sooo disgusting. I guess the older you get, the grosser you become. Oh and you get away with it too!

From Jody on Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 09:42:21

Congrats on getting into St. George! Pretty great!

From Kim on Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 10:21:59

So Walter, Did you just tell me I'm old and disgusting, but I can get away with it?

From Walter on Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 10:52:01

Jody--Thanks now ive got to get in gear with a carefull training plan.

Kim--Oh my gosh, no I wasnt telling you that your old, and no your not disgusting, i meant that having to push your hernia back into your body is nasty. I meant that when your old you get away with doing gross things and getting away with it. Your not old or disgusting, your young and lets see, whats the opposite of disgusting? Pleasant! There Ive redeemed myself.

From Kim on Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 12:13:50

Very good redemption Walter! I much prefer to be young and pleasant! Even when I get old and disgusting I'm going to be young and pleasant!

Good luck with your training!

From Walter on Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 16:20:05

Fwew! That was a close one! Im glad im out of the dog house! When is your next race?

From Kim on Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 16:36:02

I'm planning on the Speedy Spaniard 10K here in Spanish Fork on the 24th of July. It will be my first 10K with training so I am excited to see what happens.

From Walter on Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 16:47:46

Well that makes sense, the spaniard in spanish fork. Well thought out! Beat those spaniards! Go Kim USA! lol ok im done, good luck with that, im sure its alot better than the des news 10k. That race is insane. Ive never been in an actual pushing fight in a race before like that one.

From josse on Fri, Jul 11, 2008 at 23:46:08

Sorry to hear about the hernia, I know people who have ran with them for some time and been ok. They will give them problems here and there but can train and run marathons. But when they got them fixed it was a 6 week recovery, so that is what I would expect. Best of luck!

From Walter on Sat, Jul 12, 2008 at 11:21:15

Josse, thats what I expected to be around 6-8 weeks which is an eternity when your trying to peak for St. George. I will continue until my season is over than immediately get it done and see if I can be feeling good enough to do a winter marathon this year.
