Ok I drove up to Bear lake saturday morning from Logan to run the half marathon.  It was pretty unorganized from the get go and we bussed up to the start and there were no porta potties. Just a farmers field with alfalfa about 18" tall.  I went as far away from the start line as I could and went with several others doing the same.  I went to the start line and took my warmup clothes off and there was no clothing drop!  I went to the official and complained about it and one of the volunteers had a suv that we threw all our stuff in.  The race started at 8 am and the sun was up with a slight head wind.  We started on the South East corner of the lake and made our way around to Garden City park.   The miles were in a count down fasion so we actually started at 13.1 and counted down. I actually liked that. When we started everyone was running so slow and you know me, I like to bust out of the gate!  I actually ran a 6:31 for my first 1.1 mile which was about a 6 minute pace. I felt good, the scenery was the best but the course was so straight that it got boring quick and after 2 miles I grabbed a drink and looked behind me and found myself alone!  I then kept a 6 minute mile for a few miles and I got bored so every water station I stopped and drank the water and gatorade and talked for a few seconds to the volunteers.  After 7 miles I started playing a game of what I thought I could run the next mile in to keep my mind off the long straight parts.  I guessed a 6:15 for the first one and slowed my pace down and nailed it! the next mile I told myself to break a 6 minute so I sped up a bit and got a 5:57.  Then I tried to do a 6 even mile and hit a 6:01!  That was the only thing that kept my mind off the course.  I finished in 1:19 which is not a banner Half for me but with WBR next week I used this as a good training run.   The second place runner came in at 1:25 and the 3rd was a lady with a 1:26!  This is my first Half marathon win so I feel real good have finally won a race of this caliber.  I won $100 bucks, a free entrance to next year, and a trophey.  I also saw Chad and Jon up there running the 10K and they did a 2nd and 3rd overall with some good competition up there for that race from the sounds of it so make sure you read there blogs.

Great job on the win!!

From walter on Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 13:24:03

Thanks Josse! Its good to finally win one for the gipper even if it was a bit low key.

From James on Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 13:36:37

Nice win and cool prizes!

From Jon on Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 14:12:15

Nice job- I didn't know they didn't have clothes drops for you, either. No clothes drops, no bathroom, late start... At least you won!

From walter on Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 14:33:26

James--yeah, for a low key, first time race it was ok.

Jon--Im just glad I didnt have to run the extra mile you guys did! The director sounds like this was a practice trial to something big for next year. we'll see huh?

From Burt on Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 15:03:06

LOL!! I'm not even going to congratulate you even though congratulations are in order. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this entry especially the game you were playing. Man, I wish I was fast enough and consistent enough to do that. LOL.

From Lybi on Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 16:13:49

Way to go Walter! Your first half marathon win and you made it sound so easy--even stopping to talk to the volunteers! Sheesh. Congratulations on the win and the moo-lah. I had to laugh about the "accomodations" up there. Some farmer is going to be wondering why his alfalfa is growing so green this year.

From Jody on Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 16:26:31

Congrats on getting your first half marathon win!! Way to make the time go fast and the running even faster!

From JohnA on Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 16:41:16

Nice job on the overall win. I was expecting more drama from a race report from you. But you found something to entertain yourself since you were not running away from cops or pucking.

From Kim on Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 16:55:47

Great job Walter!

Did you see I was able to get my entry into ST. George? I'm glad I don't have to run the grand slam to do it. However, I do think that sounds so cool to get that grand slam medal! Maybe someday...I'll try one marathon first.

From walter on Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 18:53:06

Burt--Thanks i guess!? just dont critique my spelling and we'll be ok! jk

Lybi--That farmer had his hands full for sure if you know what I mean!? Its good to hear from you, hows the land of the sun? Now im glad im not down there.

Jody--It must have been that run we did together that sparked my winning streak!? If my times come down, Ill have to run more with ya!

JohnA--Its about time the drama club didnt show up to my race! No cops and no pucking! Im on a roll!

Kim--You got the golden ticket! congrats! Im the jealous one now! Ill bet you are relieved huh? You lucky dog you! We just have to keep annoying the race director! Yes doing 4 marathons your first year is a bit much just to try and get into one marathon huh? Now you can concentrate on a good race in october! alot less stressful huh?

From Adam RW- on Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 21:33:54

Great win Walter. Really looking forward to WBR next weekend!

From Terry on Sun, Jun 15, 2008 at 23:15:24

From walter on Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 00:45:02

Let yesterday be known as the south jordan win! Chalk one up huh!?

From Jon on Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 08:57:08

Wasn't this race on Sat? You put it on your Sunday blog...

From paula on Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 09:20:00

Great job on the run. Im sorry I missed meeting you last week with Jody. She had great things to say about you.

From jtshad on Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 09:50:11

Congrats on the win! Cash prize, does that make you a pro?

See you at WBR, let's have a good time and get van 1 partying more than van 2.

From Jon on Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 11:14:29

Looks like they are listening and will fix the problems for next year.

From dave holt on Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 11:23:45

Way to go Walter!

Although I don't think van 1 will be partying more that van 2!

From MichelleL on Mon, Jun 16, 2008 at 17:55:18

Congratulations on the win! Nice that you were able to get in a great workout without killing yourself and win money all in one day.

From walter on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 00:02:48

Jon--Yes im retarded! the race was on saturday ok! And yes, the only way to perfect a race is to have problems to solve right?

From walter on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 00:08:34

Dave--Ok there you go again, trying to get me going huh? Alright, sounds like some friendly competition. Us old guys still know how to have fun ok? were not going to be sipping tea with our pinkies raised! There will be laughter coming from our van and not because the old man farted!

Jeff--Van one will be partying harder than van 2 so bring your party people!

From walter on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 00:11:19

michelleL--Thanks, I wish I could run 10 minutes faster in a half and feel the same way! Are you doing WBR?

From MichelleL on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 07:17:24

No way man. WBR is for crazies!

From walter on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 08:15:18

I thought you were in the category of crazy michelle. Isnt everyone on this blog?

From missee on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 08:59:57

Congratulations!!! I've never had to worry about the direction of a course because there is always someone in front of me! Sounds like your course was kinda monotonous! Next time, maybe try running one mile backwards! ;-)

From Benn on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 09:08:38

Really great run, Walter. And I agree. I think EVERYONE on this blog is absolutely nuts! ;) Except me of course ;-p haha!

From walter on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 09:12:32

Thanks missee i actually almost went off the course because there was some paint on the road from a race a week earlier up there. It said turn left to finish line. It was on mile 8 so I knew it had to be wrong. Thats funny about running backwards, my dad told me to do that! Maybe next time if there ever is one.

From walter on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 09:15:24

Thanks benn, so its raining cats and dogs back there huh? Dont worry about losing your mind from running, it will sneak up on you!

From Susannah on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 10:39:13

Hey good job! I was wondering, was the course the length it was supposed to be? I was running the 10k that weekend and it was a mile longer than it should have been.

From sarah on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 19:31:53

congrats walter

From walter on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 19:44:25

Susannah, you were up there? yes, the course for the 10k was 1.1 miles longer. So dont freak out if your time was slower. My wife ran it and was so angry that we had to drive it and our car said 1.2 miles but the race director said it was 1.1 long. so you guys got to do an 11.somethingK! Next time you go to a race come up and talk to us in the fastrunning blog/st. george running center jerseys. How did you do? I know I heard from Jon and Chad that there wasnt any water stops for you guys. That makes a hard race! The half was the right distance as well as the full and they will not make us weave into the neighborhood next year. Keep up the good work. Its hard to keep motivated so let this blog help!

Sarah-- Thanks for that you guys have such a cute family. I still wish I was in a position to home school my children and it was good to get to know you down there in Arizona.

From Susannah on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 19:50:43

I did well I think. I didn't find the course being a bit long that much of a problem. I was the first female finisher, and 6th overall. The water stops were there but it looked like people were getting stuff out, but they never offered anything so that was a little disappointing. I had some Gus before I ran so I was full of energy. Yeah, next time I see you guys I'll come say hi.

From walter on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 19:57:27

Yeah, thats deffinately doing well when your the first in for women! Yes to the water stops, they wouldnt hand us the cups if it killed them. I had to grab them off the table and on one of the stops they didnt have the cups filled. They had a table full of gu's and powerbars. One of my friends grabbed a gu and thought they would have water down the road and they didnt so she had to gag on it for a few miles. funny huh!?

From Susannah on Tue, Jun 17, 2008 at 23:43:56

Yeah, Gus don't taste that great. My first time I had a Gu it was the powerbar brand I think, and I barely swallowed half. It was so disgusting, but the Gu brand is better I think. Yeah, I wasn't sure if I should grab the water at the stops or not, because the people weren't offering so I just assumed that they were for people running in the 1/2 and the marathon.

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 13:56:35

I'll move it when I get a moment.

From walter on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 15:50:00

Thanks sasha. I couldnt figure it out so I erased the miles off of sunday and put them on saturdays. That way im not 13 miles ahead this week. See you in a couple of days!

From Sasha Pachev on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 16:14:59

OK, moved. It is possible to move the entry for the user via copy/delete/paste trick, but you cannot move the comments without admin access on the database level (as of now). When we have more manpower, I'll get it fixed as well so the user can move an entry to a different day.

From walter on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 16:16:17

Alrighty then, thanks so much.

From Tracy1 on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 21:34:00

Great job Walter!! I was wondering if they provided a 1/2 marathon course! Hmmm, sounds good for next year!

From walter on Wed, Jun 18, 2008 at 22:39:46

Tracy1,the scenery up there is absolutely amazing! When the sun comes up and hits the water its just awesome. It was really low key this year so maybe it'll get more competitive next year.

From Spruce on Fri, Jun 27, 2008 at 15:29:22

Next year will be better. I sent an e-mail to the race director. I got 4th place in the 10k. Afterwards, I found out that there were no age group awards. And how in the world do you add an extra mile on accident?
