Short-Term Running Goals:

2024 GOALS:

to not get fat

Long-Term Running Goals:

Continue running as often as I can, as far as I can, as fast as I can. Teaching my kids (by example) the rewards that come from putting in the work. Very slowly get to 50 states.

Personal:

I'm married, with two sons, 18, and 19.

I started running because someone dared me to.

I ran my first race 3 days after my 40th birthday. (Disney)

7.75 miles. Hood route to legacy trail, and over the brand new stupid waste of money overpass over laurel road and back. After watching this thing be built for the last year and a half, I HAD to run over it. Now that construction is done, I will miss the P.O.P. at this location for sure.

My feelings about the new stupid overpass aside, this was a really great run for me. Quick paced and smooth and comfortable.

7.75 miles. Hood route to Legacy Trail and over SWOM bridge and back. 63 degrees and pouring rain. Sometimes windy, sideways rain. I was running and laughing at how ridiculous it was. I think I finally washed all of the Ohio Towpath mud off of my shoes. About a half mile from the finish, two cars hit major puddles, and they threw a wake at me. I mean the first wall of water hit me, and I raised my fist, while laughing. Then the second car blasted me with water, and I just laughed the rest of the way home.

7.75 miles. Hood route to Legacy Trail and over SWOM bridge and back. Inconsistent rain. Constant wind from the southwest. It was like lean-into-it wind.

We're taking the boys to our first USF Bulls Basketball Game tonight and our first trip to the Yuengling Center. It should be a really cool night of squeakyfouls and bouncyhoops.

....and also Yuengling.

3.5 miles. hood route. solo. Then, much later, a fairly intense game of 3 on 3 basket ball with boy #2 and a couple of kids from venice high football team. Well, it was intense for me. To put it in perspective, after the game, everyone shook my hand and called me "sir". Politeness never hurt so much. Meh, I gave it my best.

10.2 miles. hood route to legacy trail to colonia and back. 6:30 am start. About 50 degrees-ish. I'm still a bit stiff from Basketball yesterday, so I was moving slow but steady. I've got soccer today and tomorrow with boy #1.

Merry Christmas, party people. I'm giving all of you this very cool internet high five.

I know, I overdo it every year.

Well, it was a great Christmas, but I have some good news / bad news.

Bad news. I got a cold and I'm not able to run today. It's going to be really tough to get to 2,000 miles for the year.

Good news. We set our travel Arrangements today for the kids first snowboard trip. We will be in the Salt Lake City area for St Patrick's Day week in 2019. I hope to meet at least a couple people from this blog that I have come to know throughout the last few years. This also means there will be no return to the local St. Paddy`s Day race for Fatty McButterpants, Paddy O'Furniture, or 'Lil' Pat O'Butter. Bummer.

Bad news. The weekend of the Goofy Challenge in Orlando, where Michael is running, is the same weekend that we have two away soccer games in Fort Myers. I am not going to be able to be in Orlando that weekend. If you make it over to Tampa the following Monday or Tuesday I will see what I can do. I am optimistic that we can still make plans to get together while you are down here.

7.75 miles. Hood route to Legacy Trail and over SWOM bridge and back. 76 degrees 92 % humidity. 72 dew point. This is crazy. We have a high of 85 today. I had sweat flying off my fingertips so bad that I started questioning my arm motion. If this happened on August 28th, I would not be surprised at all. But December 28th? Bananas! Add to that - I am still a bit sick and spitting like I get paid by the loogie. This was no joy ride.

Speaking of joy ride - We plan on taking our boys and a couple of extra kids on a bike ride down Gasparilla Island to Boca Grande later. It should be a hoot. We might not swim when we get to the south end. Water temps are @ 64 degrees. That is a bit too cold for me!

10.2 MI. Hood route to Legacy Trail to Colonia and back. 8:10 a.m. start. Very very hot and humid. 78 degrees? I think I figured out what caused my shin splint problem yesterday. It seems the right pedal on my bicycle is a bit out of alignment. I believe this caused the problem. It sure took me out of the game yesterday.

7.75 miles. Hood route to Legacy Trail and over SWOM bridge and back. 6:15 am start. Then 2 laps around the block with Boy #1 to get to 2,000 for the year. Yes, he raced me for the last 200 meters, or so. I lost. 66 degrees. 100% hum. 65 dew point.

2018 was kind of a bummer year for me and running. Goals were missed. Training was inconsistent. Injuries. Blah blah blah. I'm not going into 2019 too eager to set new goals. But I definitely still like running in my life. I guess the best thing that I can say about running in 2018 is that I had a lot of non-running things to work out. And running is when I focused on those things. Like prayer, or therapy, but with an elevated heart rate! I am really happy I had those miles to sort through the life stuff this year. If running provides me nothing more than that in 2019, that will be fine with me.

Happy New Year, FRBers!
