| Location: Garson - Sudbury,ON,Canada Member Since: Apr 20, 2013 Gender: Male Goal Type: Other Running Accomplishments: I ran my first marathon in 1998: "The Friendly Marathon" in Massey, Ontario. I was 32. I had never raced in a shorter event, and I trained really poorly - ended up running it in 4:00:30. After that, I gave up running for the most part for 6 years. I got into karate a bit more seriously, until I got my knee kicked out and had ACL surgery. Then I became a 'fair weather runner' and started to run half marathons every so often. As a priest, entering weekend races always meant having to book a holiday, so it just didn't happen much. My holidays were primarily focussed on various canoe and kayak trips.
At some point, I started training more consistently, and started to think of myself as a runner. I guess doing that in your 40's is better than never doing it at all. I even started to wonder if I had it in me to qualify for Boston. Well, I did. First time didn't count, I suppose, since I didn't make the "cut". But the second time was a charm, and on my sixth Marathon, run in Chicago in 2015, I beat my BQ by almost 6 minutes. And now, running a BQ is routine for me, not that I have any desire to run Boston again.
Through it all, I've made tons of mistakes - and have had lots of injuries to show for it. Hopefully, now that I'm in my late 50's, I'm a bit wiser and can use that to my advantage to continue running for a very long time.
My PRs:
5k (12 run): Guelph, ON. October 10, 2016 (50 yrs.) 20:10
10k (10 run): Collingwood October 5, 2013 (47 yrs.) 43:37

September 7-8, 2024 DNF after 65 miles/16 hours
Pacing my sister in her 1st Half Marathon. Short-Term Running Goals: I really want to take on the Haliburton 100 again, after it kicked my butt in 2024, but I'm going to wait until 2026 to take it on again, when I'm 60 years old.
For 2025, I want to try running a Backyard Ultra, just to see how far I can run.
So, a couple of fun runs: 30K Around the Bay in March, and Pick Your Poison 50K in April, followed by Coach D's Backyard in May. That one only runs for 24 hours, so I'm using it to see how I handle the format, in view of running my goal race for 2025: The Bush Bitches Backyard, here in my hometown of Sudbury, in October. Let the training begin! Long-Term Running Goals: Run until this old body of mine won't let me run any more. I was inspired in the Spring of 2016, watching the start of the Ottawa Marathon. Near the back of the pack was an 'old man', running with his walker. I loved it! I thought ... there's me in 20 years. Maybe. Personal: I am a Roman Catholic priest of 31 years, ministering in the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie. I spent 8 years ministering in the small town of Wawa (where I helped establish the annual Blackfly Run) and 9 years in Sault Ste. Marie. I have been in the Sudbury region now for 14 years. Currently I Pastor 2 small Parishes: St. John the Evangelist in Garson, and St. Bernardine of Siena in Skead, covering the area just Northeast of the city, surrounding the Sudbury Airport. |

| | Radar Road. Just below the freezing mark, and very little wind, so nice enough for running.
Around mile 6.5, a distracted driver in a big pick up truck drove off the road just 100 feet in front of me, driving towards me. He overly compensated to get back on the highway quickly. I very infrequently give the finger to someone. I did to this idiot.

| | It has been close to a week with no running. I hurt my back moving something heavy a few weeks ago, and have had sciatica ever since. I've just pushed through the pain. On Saturday, I tried to run and just could not push through the pain any more. So, I've been on my spin bike every day since Monday, one hour a day.
I don't like the spin bike, my butt is aching, but I'm thankful to be able to exercise every day. I'm hoping the time off from running will clear up the sciatic issue.
|
| |
| | Day six on my spin bike. Same routine: 3 minutes sitting and one minute standing for 60 minutes. I'll rest tomorrow and might try a slow run on Monday.
|
|
| | Still on the spin bike for an hour. I won't push the running this week.
Same routine: sit 3 minutes/stand 1 minute, repeat 15 times.
|
|
| | Over 2 weeks with no running :( Just finished my daily 1 hour on the spin bike. At least I have that. I'll rest tomorrow and hope to attempt a run on Monday.
So, with the BAA announcing a date for the Boston Marathon - October 11th (Canadian Thanksgiving Monday) - I have a focus. I wasn't sure if this would be a year of maintenance running, one that focussed on a fast 10k, a year for an Ultra, or one for a marathon. Now, I decided to train for a Fall Marathon and hope that it can happen.
I know that a LOT of things have to go right to make Boston possible - beginning with getting in! But I'm thinking that even if it doesn't, there very well may be an Ontario marathon this fall that I can run.
First step - get past the sciatica so I can run again.

| | 2 VERY slow miles on the treadmill, with some walking thrown in before and after. I would have liked to have gone further, but the sciatic pain was increasing and I didn't want to take any further chances.
Followed it up with 30 minutes on the spin bike.

| | Same as yesterday: 30 minutes spin bike and 3 miles treadmill. Picked up the speed to close to "easy pace" at 10:00/mile. There is some improvement. Hopefully, today's massage will help even further.

|
| | Reduced the spin bike time to 20 minutes and increased the run to 40 minutes: 4 miles at 10:00/mile pace.
Massage helped. She confirmed that it was sciatica, rather than piriformis. The pain is slowly subsiding, and I'm hoping to slowly increase my running distance.

| | I woke up with no sciatic pain at all, so decided to run 6 miles on the treadmill. Felt great.
I kept it at an easy 10:00/mile pace, except for one 4 minute stretch when Spotify played Rihanna's Pon De Replay. Couldn't help myself.

After 8 months of not doing any strength/core exercises, I started again on Sunday. 120 plyometric jump squats. Today, it was hard to distinguish between the sciatic pain and the pain from that workout. But at least I know the latter is a 'good' pain :)

Tomorrow, I'm going to try to run the Virtual Hypothermic Half outside, so taking it easy today.
Oh, also noticed I've not had any sciatic pain for the last 3 runs. Hurray!
|
Brooks Ghost 13 Miles: 3.00 |
|
| |
| | So, every year the local running store sponsors this Hypothermic Half. I can never run it, because it's always Saturday night or Sunday morning ... when I have Mass. One advantage of a pandemic shift to virtual runs is the flexibility it allows in when to run them. So, this morning I ran my Hypothermic Half. The "bling" was a neat medal that doubles as a bottle opener, a pair of running gloves, and a fold up outdoor chair.
Since I had not trained at all for it, I was going to run it fairly easy ... thinking in the 2 hour range. I ended up running an average 8:08 pace for a time of 1:46:43. The extra mile at the end was just to get to where I had parked my truck.
Temperatures were not really in "hypothermic" range at -4C/25F, but I didn't mind. There was a bit of wind, but nothing of significance, and it snowed pretty steadily for the whole distance, but never that hard. The only real challenge was the icy road conditions. I did this on Radar Road.

AND, we are back into lockdown mode in my district. We have more Covid cases now than at any other point during this pandemic - by far. Many are variants of concern. So, no Masses. Like last year, it's very possible the Easter celebrations will not happen.

Glorious start to Spring. Full sun and 1C/34F. Going up to a blazing13C/55F later today.
I've been debating about running the Boston Marathon in October. I decided to pass on it. There is a pretty good chance that with just 20,000 runners this year, beating my BQ time by 4:39 at the A1A last year may well be not good enough anyway. But that's not the reason. I just don't think I want to take a chance with international travel this year. There are too many unknows.
So, instead, I'm looking at the Marathon P'tit Train du Nord on the first Sunday of October. That's French for The Little Train of the North Marathon. It's a linear route on an old rail bed, through the Laurentian forest and during the Fall colours. I have had my eye on it since it began in 2017. It's just a day's drive away, North of Montreal. They seem to think they can run it this year; if they do, that will be my one race for 2021.

Today was supposed to have been my 50 mile Ultra at Sulpher Springs, which was cancelled last year, moved to this year, and then cancelled again.
Tomorrow was supposed to be the Sudbury Rocks Half, which was cancelled last year, then moved and run virtually to the Fall, with free entry to this year's, which was cancelled again and so run virtually any time this month.
I had no intention of racing it, but since I got a nice shirt and a medal, I figured I should at least run the distance. So, I did. With an extra bit on top.

The last couple of mornings, the temperature has dropped to the freezing mark, and we've had frost. As soon as the sun comes up, however, it warms quickly and is great for running. No more freezing morning lows, however, as we go back to above seasonal temperatures this week.

Program calls for 12 x 400 @ 1:42/lap (6:48 pace) with 400 recoveries.
I never did hit a 1:42 lap. First was 1:44 as I wasn't sure how that pace should feel. After that, everything was in the 1:38 range, with a speedy 1:35 unintentionally thrown in. Close to pace, but a bit too fast.
It was getting steamy out there too, with the temperature at 21C/69 and climbing, and a humidex of 25C/77F.

8 x 600 repeats with 400 recoveries.
Was aiming for a 6:40 pace, so around 2:30/600. Most came in bang on, with only a second or two faster on a few laps.
A light rain and a cool, gentle breeze were welcomed friends.
Ontario is beginning to open up, after 7 weeks of total shutdown. We are allowed to have Mass now, albeit with restricted numbers. So, was back in Church this past weekend, finally.

Brooks Launch 8 Miles: 8.00 |

|
| | Tempo Run. Radar Road.
I'm not entirely sure on my marathon goal, but am thinking sub 3:30. So, I'm aiming for a pace between 7:45 and 7:50. Today, I ran 6 miles tempo at a 7:47 average, with only one or two seconds variation per mile, so I'm pretty happy about that.

A bear cub (this year's) was at the side of the road, just a few yards ahead of me. Took off fast into the woods. Never good to get that close to a bear cub. The mother is never impressed. I didn't see her, but I know she was close. Cute little guy though.

Gentle breeze and light rain, which turned into a torrential downpour near the end.

100% humidity, so even the coolish 19C/66F didn't feel great.
I was off my game to start, and ran the first 3 laps too slow (4 seconds/lap too slow). But I nailed the next 9 laps.
Mile splits were 6:54, 6:39 and 6:41
I woke up with a stiff right knee for some reason. Will have to keep on eye on it.

There has been construction - culvert replacement - going on for a couple of weeks now, and they were finally paving the sections they had torn up. Every week, I just ran past the flag person while dozens of cars waited. This week, she shouted something to me when I passed her, which I didn't quite get. I heard "careful", but not the rest. I figured it out when I ran past the steaming asphalt ... "careful, the asphalt is hot". I think maybe she figured I was going to run on it.

Between yesterday's run and today's, they graded the shoulders of the road. An annual ritual I dislike, it makes the surface too soft and gives it a sharper angle. It will take months before I pound it back into shape.
On a happier note, a beautiful deer ran across the road just in front of me. It didn't look both ways, and the traffic was heavy, so it lucked out finding a spot when there was a break in traffic. This is more of a moose area, so deer are more rare.

I caught the edge of the pavement and fell down (kinda hard) at mile 4.7, just past the intersection of Radar and Skead Road. As always, the worst part of it was a car driving by witnessed the whole thing. I like to keep my hilarious goofs to myself.
Pretty good road rash on my right palm and my right elbow. A chunk of left thumb ripped off. A fair bit of blood all over me. Legs were fine ... didn't notice I had a scrape on my right shin until I got home.

A week or so ago, someone dumped a load of apples beside the road. Today, in the dark, my headlamp picked up a dark shape there. Figured it was a black bear, and I was right. A good sized one.
I wasn't sure it saw me, so I made some noise and crossed to the other side of the road. It was hard to make out its reaction in the dark, and I considered back tracking the other way. But then, a truck appeared coming towards me, so I figured that would spook the bear, which it did. It ran off into the woods.

I went to a new massage therapist yesterday, as my previous one retired. When I entered the clinic, there was a very strong smell of cannabis. I wondered if this was a means to relaxation, until I realized I had gone through the wrong door and was in Sudbury's newest cannabis store. My clinic was one door over.
Anyway, she worked hard on my hips and legs and managed to get my hamstring loosened up. Still not 100%, but it's getting there.

This morning, I had to fire up the boiler for the Church. I've been trying to hold off, but the inside temperature was just 14C/57F, and I knew the complaints would start coming in if I didn't warm things up.

Double excitement today. First, a big black bear was on the road ahead of me. It was just sauntering along, going back and forth across the road. I wasn't sure if it would get out of the way before I got to it, but it finally dashed off into the woods. Judging by the sound of dogs barking, it found the group that walks their dogs every morning on a nearby sideroad.
Then, around mile three. I fell. No reason. I was just too zoned out, and my right foot caught the pavement. Went down hard on my right side: hip, fingers and elbow. Pretty much the exact spots I injured the last time I fell. This time, I was wearing long sleeves and gloves, and so I avoided most of the road rash. Numb arm for the rest of the run, but the only damage seems to be a reopening of the old wound on my elbow.
Taper week is always hard on me!

I'm leaving for Quebec in about an hour.
Pre-race inventory: The left hamstring is still not 100%, but it's not sore. Just tight. I'm hopeful it won't impact my race. I've noticed various tight spots on the whole left side during the taper - ankle, knee, IT band, hip - but that seems to just come and go. The right hip is sore to touch, but that's from my fall a few days ago. There is a good sized bruise there, which is good news. It's just a bruise, and not a running injury. I don't feel it when I run, so all is good.
Initially, I was hoping for a PR in this race (faster than Chicago's 3:24:07). I figured a few seconds faster would be great. Now, however, I'm aiming for a sub 3:23, which is my New York City Qualifying Time. My training paces seem to indicate I can run that fast, and so we'll see.

P'Tit Train du Nord Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:22:10, Place overall: 310, Place in age division: 40 | | The short report: I achieved my goal. A PR by nearly 2 minutes - my previous PR was 6 years ago. And I qualified for the New York Marathon. And I did it (unintentionally) with positive splits. Why do it the easy way?
The full report: I pulled it off! It was an emotional end to a hard fought victory.
I drove Friday from my home in Garson the 7 hours (non-stop) to Ste-Jerome, Quebec. I picked up my race package first, and then to the airbnb I had booked for 3 nights. An eat in pasta meal and then to bed.
Saturday was a slow, three mile run in the rain. Then I drove to the finish line later that morning to make sure I knew the way. The Half Marathon was being run at that time, so as to stretch out the field a la Covid-19. The rest of Saturday was relaxation, with another eat in pasta meal that night.
Sunday I was up at 4:45 to eat a light breakfast and by 6:30 I was driving to the Finish Line to catch the bus to the Start Line - a 30 minute ride through the Laurentian Mountains. It's all stunningly gorgeous, with the moutains covered in Fall colours. I've been skiing here before, and so have seen it all in the winter. This is special. The Start Line was in Val-David. They had 12 waves starting (a la Covid-19), spaced 5 minute apart. The first wave was off at 8am. I was in wave 3, and so started at 8:10.
The course is run on an old rail line that has been converted into a bike trail. The first 4 miles or so is pavement, and then packed fine gravel for most of the rest. It is a 722 foot gradual drop, with the biggest drop being between miles 4.3 - 8.7. There are gradual climbs as well, with the longest being over 2 miles between miles 15 and 17.4 and then another one between miles 20.5 and 21.75. The scenery is stunning, with incredible colours, lakes and rivers that run directly along the route.
I decided to go for my New York Qualifying pace of 3:23 (7:44/mile). I knew I would have to rein it in for the downhill miles and really watch my pace. There were no pacers for the event, due to Covid-19 regulations. All that being said, no matter how much I reined it in, I consistently ran the early miles faster than intended. Here are the splits as recorded by my GPS. Take them with a grain of salt. I think the thick tree canopy overhead, the steep rock cuts in places, and the three tunnels under roads really threw the numbers off:
(1) 7:40 (2) 7:36 (3) 7:45 (4) 7:39 (5) 7:37 (6) 7:13 (7) 7:13 (8) 8:12 (9) 6:33 (10) 7:40 (11) 7:43 (12) 7:13 (13) 8:04 (14) 7:46 (15) 7:53 (16) 7:48 (17) 8:06 (18) 7:51 (19) 7:43 (20) 7:50 (21) 7:56 (22) 8:03 (23) 7:39 (24) 7:54 (25) 8:04 (26) 8:09
My official time was 3:22:10 (7:43 pace), meaning I cleared my New York Marathon qualification time of 3:23. My official splits were:
10km 45:17 - (7:26 pace - way too fast for the first 10K)
1/2 Marathon 1:39:18 - (7:40 pace for this 11K segment - much better pace)
30km 2:21:56 - (7:41 pace for this 9K segment - again much better pace)
The final 12.2 km was run at a 7:55 pace. My legs were paying the price for the speed of the first 6 miles.
The fast start concerned me, as I knew I'd pay for it later in the race. However, my pace did feel even, and I question the 3 miles at 7:13, mile 8 at 8:12, and most especially mile 9 at 6:33. Those numbers did, however, play in my head as I struggled to maintain an even pace. At the end of mile 9, my GPS was showing an average pace of 7:33. I knew that would not end well.
The long uphill was a struggle between miles 15 and 17.4, even though it was very gradual. My splits slowed considerably after that and my legs were quickly loosing their strength. I was concerned I would be hit with dead legs too soon in the race. It was here that I knew I had to parlay the early speed into achieving my goal, and so was doing the math in my head --- if I can just keep my pace below 8:00/mile for the final 6, I can do this! Maybe. Positive splits are never a good way to go.
I suppose the final miles were no different than any other marathon run hard. The legs wanted to go off in their own direction, and it took a ton of concentration to keep moving forward. When I crossed the finish line, I nearly collapsed. I had to grab something to stay upright. And I was quite emotional, knowing what I had accomplished.
A huge plus for me was overcoming the GI issues that had hit me hard last year in Fort Lauderdale. I didn't have to even think about stopping, and I was easily able to consume the nutrition as planned: one chew every mile and one gel every 6 miles.
This is a fun, well organized event. The volunteers were fabulous, the route incredible, and the results speak for themselves.

My right calf was really screaming at me all week. That pain finally subsided, and I figured I'd be okay with an easy 5 mile run. Didn't happen. Between the right calf and the left hamstring/sit bone, I was in no condition to run further than 2 miles. So, came home and raked the leaves on the lawn instead.

Right at mile 2, my foot caught the pavement and I fell. Again! I thought the long sleeved shirt and the jacket would prevent a wound, but the same spot I opened up on my elbow the last 2 times I fell in the summer was bleeding quite a bit when I got home. Drat. A small wound on the palm of my hand too. Gotta stop zoning out so much.
