| Location: Garson - Sudbury,ON,Canada Member Since: Apr 20, 2013 Gender: Male Goal Type: Other Running Accomplishments: I ran my first marathon in 1998: "The Friendly Marathon" in Massey, Ontario. I was 32. I had never raced in a shorter event, and I trained really poorly - ended up running it in 4:00:30. After that, I gave up running for the most part for 6 years. I got into karate a bit more seriously, until I got my knee kicked out and had ACL surgery. Then I became a 'fair weather runner' and started to run half marathons every so often. As a priest, entering weekend races always meant having to book a holiday, so it just didn't happen much. My holidays were primarily focussed on various canoe and kayak trips.
At some point, I started training more consistently, and started to think of myself as a runner. I guess doing that in your 40's is better than never doing it at all. I even started to wonder if I had it in me to qualify for Boston. Well, I did. First time didn't count, I suppose, since I didn't make the "cut". But the second time was a charm, and on my sixth Marathon, run in Chicago in 2015, I beat my BQ by almost 6 minutes. And now, running a BQ is routine for me, not that I have any desire to run Boston again.
Through it all, I've made tons of mistakes - and have had lots of injuries to show for it. Hopefully, now that I'm in my 60's, I'm a bit wiser and can use that to my advantage to continue running for a very long time.
My PRs:

Pacing my sister in her 1st Half Marathon. Short-Term Running Goals: Now that I'm 60, I'm going to run just for the fun of it this year. I have no races planned. I think I'm done with Ultras, but am open to running more Marathons at some point in the future. Long-Term Running Goals: Run until this old body of mine won't let me run any more. I was inspired in the Spring of 2016, watching the start of the Ottawa Marathon. Near the back of the pack was an 'old man', running with his walker. I loved it! I thought ... there's me in 20 years. Maybe. Personal: I am a Roman Catholic priest of 32 years, ministering in the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie. I spent 8 years ministering in the small town of Wawa (where I helped establish the annual Blackfly Run) and 9 years in Sault Ste. Marie. I have been in the Sudbury region now for 15 years. Currently I Pastor 2 small Parishes: St. John the Evangelist in Garson, and St. Bernardine of Siena in Skead, covering the area just Northeast of the city, surrounding the Sudbury Airport. |

| | The heat wave continues. Ran as early as possible, at the coolest time of the morning. It was 21C/72F with 100% humidity. The mosquitoes are loving this. 9:32 pace.
I had a bunch of dental work done yesterday. It was so nice to sit for an hour in an air conditioned room as the temperatures hit 31C/88F outside.

| | Still hot and muggy. 21C/70F and 100% humidity. Hard to get the legs moving; 9:44 pace.

| | A bit cooler this morning. Even with the 100 percent humidity, it made for easier running. 9:14 pace. | |

| | My normal slow start, but a zippier middle and finish. 8:51 average pace. Maybe due to the humidity dropping to the low 80% range. It felt much more bearable.

| | Not hot, at just 16C/60F, but 100% humidity made the run feel draggy. 9:27 pace.

| | Pleasantly cool at just 17C/63F and a lower humidity made for a much easier run; 9:17 pace.

| | I attempted a speed session, but no go. Just too hot and humid, I guess. I ran just one 400m interval and couldn't get below a 7:50 pace, so decided it best to just take the rest slow today. 10:10 overall pace.

| | Yesterday ended up hitting 33C/91C, with a humidex of 43C/109F. It didn't cool off much over night, so I just took this run easy. 8:57 pace. Today will be another hot one, and then it will start to cool down a bit. Between the 100% humidity and the haze from wildfire smoke, the sun was a brilliant red. Gorgeous.

| | The temperature and humidity finally came down overnight, so this run felt much easier. 8:56 pace. The air quality from the wildfires in Ontario and Quebec is low. The sun is completely blocked out, and there is a dark, eerie haze. You can smell the smoke, but it didn't seem to impact my run in any noticeable way.

| | The smoke really moved in yesterday after my run, and is still lingering. A bit of a burn in the eyes and lungs. Not nice. 9:33 pace.

| | I cut this run short as the wildfire smoke was causing my lungs to burn. Not worth it, I figured it; 9:39 pace.

| | Not terribly hot, at just 18C/65F, but the 100% humidity was uncomfortable. There was a steady, light rain throughout, and that actually felt good on my face. 9:07 pace.

| | Cool morning, at just 11C/51F, and a lower 83% humidity, along with legs that felt strong, meant a zippy (for me) 8:26 pace.
