Today was the Freedom Run 10K in Provo. I've done this race probably 10-12 times over the years, at least. It's a fun thing. And my wife ran the 5K, so that was fun, too. I also had two brothers and two sisters who ran.

Last year I ran 43:54, and I was fairly disappointed with that time. I also felt like I crashed and burned toward the end, so I was nervous about that happening today. So I went out faster than last year but was conservative the first few miles. Once I started the uphills and was feeling strong still, I pushed the pace. And I finished with a sprint at the end. So maybe I was too conservative. Maybe not though.

In the first mile, I could still see the leaders. That was a surprise. Anyway, during the race, I kept thinking I could run faster without having to work too much harder, but I felt like my pace was good at the time, so I stayed with it. We had to run around all the 5K runners again, but this time I was mentally prepared for that.

I thoroughly enjoyed the race and smiled during a lot of it. I just found joy in being able to do it and knowing that I was running a lot faster than the year before. In fact, my time was 39:09, which was an improvement of 4:45 over last year. My splits:

Tempo run on the treadmill. Probably felt better than I should have after a race, but that's OK. 6.25 miles in 39:50.

Pretty good hill workout on the treadmill. Random hills, level 5, averaged about 6:45 per mile. That's three good runs in a row. Time for some rest.

I got some new Pearl Izumi shoes today. They are the Streak model, which are designed for fast training and for racing. They supposedly weight 8.8 oz and are bright orange. Please excuse me while I wipe the drool off my chin....

(These are the shoes I won from the Renaissance 5K a couple months ago. Thanks to Blaine Hawkes for running a great race and providing a nice prize. Y'all should run it next year, but this time you'll have to beat me in these bad-boy shoes.)

Short version of random hill workout on the treadmill. Level 9 for 3.3 miles. Level 1 for 1.2 miles. It was a nice little workout to get done in 30 minutes.

The day was busy, so I didn't get out and run till 11:40 pm. I was so tired and just did a 2.5 mile loop. I did my normal two strides. The first one is about 0.3 miles and the second one about 0.7 miles. The first one was around 5:15 pace. On the second one, I just didn't have any energy. But since it was downhill I ran under 6:00 pace barely.

This was my first time to wear my new Streaks, but I don't think I did them justice this time.
