I'm changing my 5-day running schedule to Mo-Tu-We-Fr-Sa, so I ran today to start off the year on that schedule. But I just ran my one mile loop because I ran yesterday and wanted to take it easy.

This morning I drove out to Antelope Island to do a training run for the Buffalo Run (buffalorun.org). There were about 10 runners, and I met some new people, which was great. We ran a loop on the hilly portion of the course. Some of it was on packed snow, and some of it was on fresh snow about 6-8 inches deep. That made it challenging, but I felt great on it. It was about 7.8 miles but harder than most of my miles.

Antelope Island is beautiful, and the course looks excellent for a trail race. It's hilly but not mountainous. So I'm now almost sure I'll do that race in March.

I might do some more miles tonight, not sure. But if not, I'll just say it has been a solid week of running, and I'm ready for a fun year of running.

Ran 10 miles on the treadmill. The first mile and last mile were at 8 minute pace. The in between miles were at or below 7:00 pace. 69 minutes for the entire run. No incline, but the goal on these is fast turnover.

I didn't feel too good, possible due to the snow run on Saturday (sore hamstrings) or fasting on Sunday, but at least the week got off to a good start.

Ran on the Bonneville-Shoreline trail up by the Huntsman. Ran out to the part where the trail forks. Snow was packed, so a little hard to get traction but very runnable. Enjoyed being above the smog ceiling. 9:16 average pace.

I haven't for several months but plan to more often. I didn't see any guys wearing twinkies shirts today though. But it is a pretty long trail, so he may run on a different part of it.

One hour of running on the treadmill. It's amazing how rejuvenating it can feel to do those paces that are more relaxed. Also, I think it's going to work really well to run on Fridays instead of Thursdays.

It was really smoggy today, so I ran inside. I decided to run a relaxed pace rather than push it a lot. That was a good idea. I felt like I could have kept going longer, without too much discomfort. So the long runs are starting to get easier. It makes sense that on the long run the emphasis is to get miles not necessarily to run fast. But at the same time, you don't want to go into jogging mode.

We had more people than treadmills, so for part of the time I had to use the elliptical and stationary bike. But I still feel like it was equivalent to running, based on time.

Our baby boy is due in a week, so it will be fun to see how that goes.

A couple other notable runners, Logan Fielding and Meb Keflezhighi are also expecting babies soon. So maybe that means I'll run as fast as them.

50 miles exactly for the week. That's great.

And to top it all off, I got mentioned on Burt's blog today! He said he wants to be like me, but I really want to be like him, somehow finding a way to run even when he has so many other responsibilities.

Did my Monday tempo workout (on the treadmill). 1 mile warmup, 0.5 miles at 8.6, then ran 7.7 tempo miles, then 0.8 mile cooldown. I decided to run for an hour and then do the cooldown. In that hour, I ran 9.22 miles. The full workout was in 66:16. I'm happy with it.

Did the hill repeat workout (not random hills) on the treadmill, 7:00 pace. Started out at Level 9 for the first 3.5 miles. Then was struggling and bumped it down to Level 3 and finished strong. My legs were fairly sore. But it was a good strong run for me. 8 miles total in 57 minutes.

We thought the baby was going to come last night, but he must be too comfortable in there to face the cold world. Or maybe he knows about the smog.

We went and visited my parents in Utah County. On the way back we saw how bad the smog is (really bad), so I wasn't going to run in it. Instead I did my longest treadmill run ever. I set it to do some random hills (average 1% incline, Level 2 for most of it) to provide a little variety.

My wife and daughter came by to say hello, and my girl got really excited and wanted to run. So my wife put her on the other treadmill at 1 mph, and it was too easy. She want to run "fast" like me. It was really cute. I held her and ran at 4 mph for 0.2 miles, which was a good workout.

In the end, it was 22 miles on the treadmill in about 2:45. I bet there aren't too many bloggers who've done that before! :)

Average was 7:30 pace.

This week was good. Reached 55 miles. It's been good because I'm increasing my miles slowly but still getting good recovery.

No baby yet. Due date is tomorrow.

From Steve Piccolo on Fri, Jan 22, 2010 at 17:34:17 from 66.60.123.141

I thought about going down for the Spectrum 10K again this year, but probably not. Too hard with a little baby, I think. So unless I find another race between now and the end of March, my next race will probably be the Buffalo Run 50 miler, which is on Antelope Island on March 27. I know, kind of crazy. But I'm really excited about it.

2 miles warmup on the elliptical, watching BYU win their 20th game of the season.

Then did a solid 1 hour hill workout on the treadmill. Ran it at 7:00 pace. Level 7. Random hills. It was challenging but doable. Going to Level 8 or 9 seems to be a big jump for me, but Level 7 is doable.

This week turned out to be not too bad as far as running goes (great otherwise). 42 miles and some solid workouts. I'm really liking what I've been doing with alternating hard runs with easy runs. I usually feel fresh and ready to go for the harder workouts.

Dustin asked what my next race was. So I looked around and found a 5K (Hale Freezes Over) down in Orem next Saturday, which I'm going to run. If it's not any more competitive than last year, I should have a shot at placing well. But I bet the competition will be stronger this year.

How many times a week should I do speed work? I usually run 3 times on the weekdays with a longer run on the Saturday. I usually run 3-4 miles on Monday, would that be a fair distance to do my speed work or should I make my "medium" runs be speed work? Thanks!

From Steve Piccolo on Wed, Jan 27, 2010 at 00:06:27 from 66.60.123.141

Hi Jodee. I'd say starting out it would be good to keep about the same # of miles each day that you have been doing. And I'd say starting out you'd probably want to do only one speed session per week. Once you've done that for a few weeks, then you could throw something else in (maybe hills, tempo run, etc.). So if you are running 4 miles for the speed session, I'd suggest 1 mile warmup, 0.5 mile at 8:00 pace, 0.5 mile at 9:00 pace, 0.5 mile at 7:45 pace, 0.5 mile at 9:00 pace, 0.5 mile at 7:30 pace, 0.5 miles cooldown at whatever pace feels comfortable. Those paces I mentioned are just ballpark numbers. You have to see how the paces feel to you. Then as you gain experience, you could increase the pace and/or number of repetitions.

This morning I drove down to Orem, UT for a 10K that was put on by the Hale Center Theater. My wife and I really love going to shows there, and I found out they were giving season tickets to the top three finishers in each race. Plus it had been 2 months since I did a race and wanted to do one.

I saw that last year's winning time was 41 minutes, so I thought I might have a shot of placing in the top three. Here's how the race went. A few guys started out pretty fast, but I didn't want to go quite that fast. Then it thinned out quickly. I was in 4th place for the first two miles and averaging about 6:15 pace on this flat-downhill portion. Then a guy passed me, so I was in 5th place. But I felt good and wanted to just run relaxed and not get carried away. I was still in 5th place around the 3 mile mark when the lead runner turned around and started running towards us, even though he was supposed to go right. I figured he was a bandit, so that put me in 4th place. During the next mile I passed two guys, which put me in 2nd, and I could see the leader. I felt bad for him because he kept having to ask which direction to go, so eventually I made a push to run alongside him. For miles 5-6 the three of us battled back and forth. Then with 1/2 mile to go, I threw in a surge. With about 1/4 mile to go, I started to die and thought I would lose. But then I got a final bit of energy to push me through in 1st. Then I saw the earlier leader who I thought was a bandit. He said he went a different route that was the same distance and that he hoped nobody noticed. His time was really good, so I figured I really was 2nd place. When they gave the awards, they announced me as the winner, so I guess that other guy was disqualified.

So basically, I wasn't the fastest runner but I got first place. To be honest, I didn't care about winning and don't consider this a true win (because I wasn't the fastest), but I was very excited about the prizes. Season tickets to the Hale Center Theater and a Family Pass to Thanksgiving Point!! I was so pleased because these gifts I could share with my wife and kids as a small token of appreciation for how much they support my running. And on our tight budget, we wouldn't have been able to do these things otherwise.

I met a really nice guy named Ben who was doing his first road race. He got excited about doing more, which is cool.

Congrats to the other runners! I hope I didn't cut anyone off or doing anything I wasn't supposed to. But if I did, I didn't mean to.

Anyway, this race was really well run, and I would highly recommend it. Sean Murphy did a great job organizing it.

That was a great race. You looked like you had a bit more left in the tank than I did and I just couldn't get myself to try to sprint past you, everytime I'd pick up the pace you'd hear me and pick it up even more. My heart rate was already over 180, I guess if I knew that the other guy was going to get DQ'd I may have tried. But the three of us were evenly matched. The first place guy said he finished in 35 something. And Congratulations on the "win"!

I ran farther today than I've ever run in a single day: 30 miles.

A few months ago I had this grand idea that it would be fun to run in a 50 mile race. So I signed up for the Buffalo Run, which is on March 27 (in 7 weeks). In preparation for it, I decided that today I would try 30 miles. It was a rude awakening!

I ran south on 1300 East and hopped on the bike path in Draper. Turns out it's a really great path that takes you all the way to Point of the Mountain. From there I took the frontage road to Cabelas in Lehi. I couldn't believe I could get that far in 15 miles. Anyway, I took a bathroom break and refilled my water.

For the first half, I felt good, my stride was relaxed, and I was averaging 7:45/mile. I felt like the pace was sustainable for another 15 miles. At about mile 22 on the way back, it started to get uncomfortable, and it got much worse after that. The last 7-8 miles were painful. I kept thinking, "what was I thinking to believe that I could run 20 miles more than this?!" I have gained a new respect for ultramarathon distances.

In the end, I'm glad I did it. But hopefully my body will be able to handle it better. During the second half, I averaged 8:45/mile, so I slowed down a lot. Those paces don't include about 10 stops for traffic lights or for short, planned walking breaks.

Anyway, 56 miles for the week, which is my highest this year. Aiming for 60 next week.

you should run the Draper half marathon with me on March 27 instead.... just kidding, go for the 50 miler, you can do it!

Wow Steve! Of course I don't really have a clue, but I'm thinking you should have taken it a lot slower to go out and do 30 miles.

From Steve Piccolo on Mon, Feb 08, 2010 at 15:56:57 from 66.60.123.141

That's a dilemma for me, because going out too slow means I'll be on my feet for longer, but going out too fast means I pay for it in the end. So maybe it's just a matter of finding the sweet spot in between.

I'm trying to get ready for my upcoming 50 miler, so I ran 30 miles for the second time in three weeks. Once again, it was very hard. I ran 2 miles with my daughter in the stroller around our neighborhood. Then did 13 miles around Dimple Dell on the wood chip trails while listening to BYU thump Wyoming in b-ball. It was snowing lightly. Then it was getting dark, so the last 15 miles were on the treadmill. The last 8-10 miles were painful in my legs. My IT bands and quads were just hurting real badly. But I'm glad I finished the run.

63-64 miles for the week. My best for the year by far. So that's good. But I am not sure if I'm running enough miles to prepare for a solid race. But this is taking more than enough time out of my schedule, so it will have to do.

OKay, I learned a lot about ultra running yesterday from Crockett and watching Running on the Sun (about the badlands ultra) and I think you are doing great! It seems like they all take it pretty easy during the week with normal mileage and then just do a long run. In fact, the guys preparing for the badlands did not even ever seem to hit 100 miles in a week, then they head off to run a 135 mile race!!!

So, which race are you doing? The Buffalo run?

From Steve Piccolo on Sun, Feb 21, 2010 at 13:52:22 from 66.60.122.132

That's good to hear because that's been my philosophy. Regular miles with a long run each week or two. Yep, I'm doing the Buffalo Run.

I really do not profess to know much of anything, I am just sharing what I have heard and read. I was floored at these people who did the 135 mile Ultra who only had a long run of 30-35 miles, but that is what they did!

I SO wanted to do the Buffalo 25k as a start for Ultra running, BUT I committed to helping with a race not realizing it was the same day. i am so sad. HAVE FUN, you will do great.

whats level 7? if that is elevated significantly you blew my seven mile tempo away.

From Steve Piccolo on Thu, Feb 25, 2010 at 23:28:31 from 66.60.122.240

It varies between a 0% and 7% incline, I think. So an average of 3.5%. If only I could do that on my own, without the treadmill pushing me along. The altitude you ran at, plus the fact that you ran alone, far exceeds what i did. On Tuesday i pushed hard and only got to 6:46 pace. But would be fun to train together. Then i could follow in your shadow to speedy times.

From Scott Ensign on Thu, Feb 25, 2010 at 23:36:26 from 65.100.253.126

I would be interested in seeing some quantitative data on how altitude affects performance. I was talking to Alan Culpepper at the Bolder Boulder in 2006 about it and he said it is an exponential function, i.e. harder to go from 4600 feet to 6000 than from zero to 1400. I will have to see if I can find any hard data, do you know of any?

From Steve Piccolo on Fri, Feb 26, 2010 at 00:02:06 from 66.60.122.240

I don't know of any data sets that are available. I wonder what evidence there is for an exponential curve. There's a really good book about running that you should read that has a section on this. It's called Lore of Running. It's by an MD who has done decades of research on running performance and also reviews lots of research from others in the book. He says the research suggests that the best benefits from training at altitude come from training above 7000' because that's where you start to increase in red-blood cell count. So this would suggest there's a sudden difference in performance once you reach that level. Not sure if I believe that 100%, because it doesn't seem logical that there would be a sudden difference at a certain altitude. Anyway, his theories are based on his "Central Governor Model," which suggests that our brains start to shut down muscle activity when it senses we are in danger. Some people say that altitude is a limiting factor because we can't get oxygen to the muscles, but he refutes that and says it's because we get less oxygen to our brain. At least that's the way I understood it.

From Scott Ensign on Fri, Feb 26, 2010 at 00:24:27 from 65.100.253.126

Steve, the guys who won the marathon and the half marathon in Mesquite were from Alamosa Colorado (elevation 7600). the guy who won the marathon ran an incredible 2:19 on that nasty course. so the above 7000 feet training seemed to pay off. But you would probably have to live and acclimate there for it to make a difference.

I found this:

http://www.runworks.com/calculator.html

I plugged in some numbers and it came back completely linear as 2.5 seconds per mile for every 1000 feet. says it comes from Daniels running formula. I have that book so will have to go look. Culpepper is on the cover of that book by the way. I was lucky to get to chat with him one on one in Boulder for about ten minutes, really nice guy. I'll look into the lore of running, thanks for the tip!

We got out a mile, and I asked "more running?" She immediately said, "yah," so we kept going. When we were 3 miles away from home, she said, "Home. Mommy." So we turned around. After about a quarter mile she wanted to get out and play in a puddle, so I let her. And she wanted to play in the snow, so I let her. I'm really glad to have run out there because now I have a more realistic expectation on what kind of pace I can run on that surface. I was thinking I could do a little faster today than I did. you should come up to Logan saturday and run the shamrock shuffle 5K with me and Paul. starts at 10AM at skyview high in Smithfield. but that's a long way to go for a 5K. then again, think of the bragging rights when you beat me.

From Steve Piccolo on Thu, Mar 11, 2010 at 19:02:37 from 66.60.122.240

That's funny, I was actually going to invite you to come down and run the Rex Lee Run 5K with me this Saturday. But then I noticed that you are already planning to do a 5K. Bummer, we should definitely get together and run a race soon.

From Scott Ensign on Thu, Mar 11, 2010 at 19:46:29 from 65.100.253.126

hmmm... I could visit my daughter at BYU, and the race is hosted by my alma mater department, looks tempting... I will give it some thought and get back to you. but why are you running the 5 when there is a 10K?

From Steve Piccolo on Thu, Mar 11, 2010 at 20:36:45 from 66.60.122.240

I'm doing the 5K because I haven't done one in forever. I want to see if I can break 19 minutes and maybe even 18.

It's kinda funny that I'm doing a 5K one week and then a 50 miler two weeks later.

From Scott Ensign on Thu, Mar 11, 2010 at 20:44:56 from 65.100.253.126

the course has a pretty tough climb up to 900 east, if you can break 18 on it you are in great shape. I will meditate on it and let you know...

From Steve Piccolo on Thu, Mar 11, 2010 at 21:09:16 from 66.60.122.240

I'm actually more concerned about the long, slow uphill from 800 North to the track in the last mile. It's not steep, but it's at the end. I figure the starting adrenaline will carry me up that first hill. Especially if your speedy self is carrying me along.

P.S. We interviewed one of your former students for our program here at the U of U. He's a sharp kid.

From Scott Ensign on Thu, Mar 11, 2010 at 22:01:57 from 65.100.253.126

looks like the biggest challenge here is going to be getting in front of the pack of amateurs if you want to do well, my guess is a bunch of eager kids will pack the line and cause all kinds of race chaos at the start by charging out fast and then burning out.

the smithfield race has an initial uphill worse than that, a nasty course but there will only be 50 runners probably. but it is no course to PR on, I will be lucky to run 19:30.

I will probably stick to my plan to do our 5K, there is a guy here my age I need to race, and I should do some work around the house saturday. I'll let you know if I change my mind though!

This was my first 5K in a long time. I think the last one was the Rex Lee Run about 5 years ago. I wasn't feeling great this morning, but the race went fairly well. The first mile was in 6:13, the second mile about 5:55 (downhill), and the third mile about 6:30. Overall pace was 6:10. I finished a little faster. It was hard to get myself in a good rhythm during the race. When someone would pass me, I could follow their rhythm for awhile, but I couldn't keep it. I think I need to do more speedwork.

Tomorrow I'm running the Buffalo Run 50 miler on Antelope Island. This is my first ultramarathon. So hopefully this won't be my last blog post.

My goal is to run really relaxed for the first 19 hilly miles to get a feel for the race. The next 22.5 miles are pretty flat, so I'll see if I can pick up the pace at all there. And then I'll just try to run the last 8.5 miles without dying. My dad and my mother-in-law are both worried I'm going to die. Seriously. So I'll try to prove them wrong. But if not, I can't think of a more enjoyable way to kick the bucket.

I ran my first real speed workout in probably six months. That's sad that it's been so long.  But I've been a wimp and run mostly indoors, and you can't really get a speed workout on the treadmill, though you can get good tempo workouts.

Anyway, it was a really enjoyable workout. I charted out a loop around my neighborhood where I don't have to worry about traffic, and it's exactly a 1/2 mile. It has a fairly decent uphill and downhill to it, but it's not grueling.

My times were 3:10, 3:00, 3:00, 2:54. I was really pleased to get below 3:00. Can't wait till I run on the track and see how my speed has improved and can keep improving.

I live in a development with a bunch of townhomes. So I just did a loop around the townhomes. It's not too steep but is definitely a noticeable incline. We have a big hill close to us that I should try sometime for hill repeats. It's the one at 9400 South and 1300 East if you know where that is.

I thought today was my day to finally complete the hill workout on the treadmill that I have been trying to do for about 6 months. It's 7 minutes pace, random hills, at Level 9 for 4.5 miles. I made it to 3.5 miles but then had to take a 2.5 minute break. Then I ran another 0.5 mile on Level 9 and bumped it down to Level 1 for the last 0.5 mile. I plan to keep doing this workout each week and get stronger on the hills.

Hi Burt, I never replied to this. School is going well. I'm in crunch mode now, trying to get the dissertation done. It's mostly laid out for me, what I need to do, so I just need to crank it out. The sooner I get done, the sooner I can start making more $$$ and doing more interesting projects. How's work going for you?

Hey guys. Yeah, life is really busy lately. All I have left to graduate is my dissertation, so I'm really trying to get it moving along so I can graduate. I have to get it done before I can take a job that is hopefully going to be waiting for me. This morning I ran the Renaissance Academy Race for Literacy 5K in Lehi, UT. It was a nice morning for a race, and the course was pretty flat. I wasn't sure how the competition would be, so I figured I'd play it by ear. I noticed Allie (from the blog) at the start, so I figured she'd be someone good to run with since she is a marathon winner. Sure enough, we ran together through the first 2+ miles (after passing some elementary kids who sprinted out at the front). Another guy ran with us till the 2-mile mark but then had to stop for some refreshment at the aid station. I felt pretty comfortable in the first two miles, but I wasn't sure if Allie was just toying with me, so I started pushing the pace at 2 miles to see what would happen. I guess Allie's marathon last week was still in her legs, because she let me win.

I got a gift certificate for a pair of Pearl Izumi shoes. Perfect because I have been wanting to get some racing shoes.

This week I didn't reach 20 miles, so maybe I'll throw in some more miles tonight if I'm feeling ambitious.

there is something that causes runners to exhibit obsessive behaviors about running. addiction? obsession? or just totally 110% dedicated to a hobby?

I had a great workout today. It was my last while in California, so I wanted to get in a speed workout. The local school is about 3/4 mile around, so I ran on the roads around it and did 1/4 mile repeats. This is the first time in like a year that I've done these. Not sure why it's been so long, but I want to do them again soon. Anyway, I did 1/4 rest intervals, which were in about 2:00 each, so not bad. Here are my splits:

81.1

76.7

81.8

73.3

83.7

80.2

69.8

79.9

There's not really any flat roads around here, so some sections were up or downhill a bit. But I was really happy to get below 70 on one, even though it was slightly downhill and at low elevation. I had worried that I was no longer capable of running that fast. Now I need to get to where it feels more natural to run fast.

This week I ran just over 20 miles. Three solid workouts and that's about it.

But most were between 80 and 86. I'm glad I did it, but I think doing five hard workouts this week caught up with me. Or else my Pegasus shoes are just slower.

But it's been a good week. I think this harder intensity mileage will pay off when I do the 10K on July 4. And I got up to 30 miles for the week for the first time since March, so that is good.

I did hill repeats, sort of. To the west of my home, there is a loop that is about 1.25 miles around (I think), so I went around it a few times, alternating 3:00 hard with 1:00 easy. I did 8 of those. Some of the repeats were uphill, some were downhill, some were mixed. The average on the repeats was about 6:20-6:30 pace. The overall average was 7:30 pace.

It was a good workout, and I'm glad I got outside to do it. But I just can't seem to break through lately to where I want to be. I feel like I've hit a wall. But hopefully this speedwork will help as I continue doing it. I think I also have to break through mentally, and the speedwork should help with that, too.

Same workout as last Monday (treadmill), but I guess I upped the speed more quickly this time. short warmup, then upped the pace slightly each minute until I was running 6:00 pace. Ran 10K in 38:27 (a treadmill PR). Then finished with a short cooldown. This time felt quite a bit harder than last week. Might be due to slight weight gain or might be due to just daily variation. I'm feeling like I can break 40:00 in the July 4 race this year (last year's time was 43:54).

I was going to take a day off, as usual for Thursdays. My calves are so sore. I can't remember the last time they were this sore. Weird.

Normally I watch the kids on Thursday evenings, but I had a church meeting, so we got a friend to watch the kids. But the meeting was unexpectedly short, so I took advantage of having the babysitter and went for a run. I needed it, even though my calves were sore, because I am stressed out with school. Anyway, I ran 5.5 miles in 38:15 on the treadmill.

I now have more miles than last week already.

I hope all the UV racers do well. This race seems to be really big and has some good matchups this year.

6 treadmill miles here at the hotel in Denver. I alternated between pushing the pace and resting at a slower pace. I finally was able to run on a treadmill that goes up to 12 mph (5 min/mile), so I did that for 1/4 mile. That was tough, but I'm glad to say I did that. It felt about as difficult as 6 min/mile was when I started back into running. But also, I think the slightly higher elevation slowed me down a bit. Total 6 miles in 41 minutes.

I DID IT!! After about 6 months of trying to complete this hill workout on the treadmill, I finally did it. Almost every week, I've been working on this but have had to stop to rest during it. I ran a mile warmup. Then did 4.5 miles on Level 9 random hills at 7:00 pace. Then ran 0.5 mile cooldown. I don't know what made the difference this time. It could be a lot of things, but I'd like to think I'm getting faster and stronger.

Tonight I was really lucky to meet a bunch of bloggers from this site. Kelli and her husband Scott threw a little party for Burt, who is in town for the Wasatch Back. It was fun to meet people, including the infamous Burt. Great guy. Thanks to Kelli and Scott for setting up the party and providing some great food.

Late tonight I did my run. It was just hard to get it in early. I ran two loops around the Quarry Bend area, which is about 2.5 miles each, for a total of 5 miles. I threw in four surges. Two of them were 0.23 miles and averaged about 5:45 pace with a slightly downhill grade. The other two were 0.80 miles and had a lot of downhill, and I averaged 5:42 and 5:22 pace on those. Even though it was downhill, it was nice to get the legs churning. They felt great. Average pace was 7:07. I think I'm ready to start doing some races.

I ran 25 miles this week, not as many as I hoped, but not too bad considering I only ran a mile each on Tuesday and Wednesday. As usual lately, most of my miles were at medium-hard intensity.

Today was the Freedom Run 10K in Provo. I've done this race probably 10-12 times over the years, at least. It's a fun thing. And my wife ran the 5K, so that was fun, too. I also had two brothers and two sisters who ran.

Last year I ran 43:54, and I was fairly disappointed with that time. I also felt like I crashed and burned toward the end, so I was nervous about that happening today. So I went out faster than last year but was conservative the first few miles. Once I started the uphills and was feeling strong still, I pushed the pace. And I finished with a sprint at the end. So maybe I was too conservative. Maybe not though.

In the first mile, I could still see the leaders. That was a surprise. Anyway, during the race, I kept thinking I could run faster without having to work too much harder, but I felt like my pace was good at the time, so I stayed with it. We had to run around all the 5K runners again, but this time I was mentally prepared for that.

I thoroughly enjoyed the race and smiled during a lot of it. I just found joy in being able to do it and knowing that I was running a lot faster than the year before. In fact, my time was 39:09, which was an improvement of 4:45 over last year. My splits:

6:22

6:14

6:10

This morning I ran down to Draper to watch the end of the Draper Days 5K. I saw Patrick Rotich (the winner), MaryAnn Schauerhamer, and Allie. I'm not sure what their times were, but they looked like the hill at the end wasn't too enjoyable. But I think they all did quite well. I probably also saw some other people from the blog, but I didn't recognize anyone.

Then I ran home, and it came out to 12 miles at 7:10 pace. Pretty good. Longest run since May. I think I have 29 miles for the week. Not bad considering I basically only ran three good runs.

This is the first time I've done this race. It was decent. My plan was to keep up with the rooster, but he was just too fast from the get-go. I wish I had my watch working so I knew my splits, but that first mile was in the low 5's, I think. The rest of the race I just went back and forth with people and never felt that I was moving that well. But in the end, my time was 36:19 or something, which was faster than my goal, so that's good. I competed best with people when it was flat or uphill rather than downhill. So I think I need to work on my speed more, as usual. Big congrats to rooster and allie and others who ran so well.

We put our townhome on the market a few months ago and fortunately have been able to sell it. We closed on it today and moved to Lehi. So tonight I did a short run in our new neighborhood. It's great for running so far. Lots of fresh air and hardly any cars. I no longer have access to the treadmill I've run so many miles on the past 18 months, so I'm either going to have to toughen up and run outside, get a gym membership, or buy a treadmill.

But maybe we could stop by your place Saturday afternoon on our way home.

The Choir is performing with the Utah Symphony (I think) up at Deer Valley Resort near Park City. They have an outdoor ampitheater, and you sit out on the grass or on lawn chairs. It's one of their most popular performances. It does cost $25, so a little pricey, but I would recommend it if you can go. http://www.arttix.org/tickets/reserve.aspx?performanceNumber=5167

Hope everything is going good with the moves. You'll have to tell me the story sometime.

My mileage wasn't very good last week either. I've been a little burned out and haven't been training as hard this year. I guess I better change my attitude since the St. George Marathon is only 9 weeks away.

From Steve Piccolo on Mon, Aug 02, 2010 at 18:20:45 from 155.101.243.223

No problem. It would have been impossible for us to get together this weekend after all the craziness. So next time you are up here, we should make sure to get together. If I ever graduate, Laurel and I want to go down your way, and maybe we can see a national park or something.

I had heard good things about the TOU Half, so I signed up a few months ago. In the meantime, I have had some busy times and haven't been able to train as much as I would like. But I decided to run anyway.

Scott Ensign and family generously allowed my family to stay with them. I went down with Scott to the race in the morning, and he is good company as always. Thanks, Scott!

My official half marathon PR is 1:35, so I figured I could beat that. The first 10 miles were great (and mostly downhill and mostly with a tailwind). I averaged 6:30/mile through that stretch. But then I struggled through miles 11 and 12 big time. Mile 13 was better. My final time was 1:27:41. A personal best. But I'm disappointed in my effort toward the end. Oh well. The other sad thing was that I got passed at the end by no-shirt guy. I was annoyed the whole race that he was running without a shirt, so I really wanted to beat him. Maybe next year. Ha ha. :)

Yeah, I know I was just being silly to get annoyed at no-shirt guy. Maybe I was just envious that he would be confident enough in his physique to go shirtless. :)

I used to where it on the back of my shorts - until I realized that you'll never be able to find race photos on Zazoosh. Now I wear it on the right leg of my shorts. I think my brother wears it on his left.

I ran over to Canyon Road and up on a trail by the mouth of Provo Canyon. It was fun to explore, and the weather was perfect. The sights and smells reminded me of high school cross country. 7.75 miles in 1:05. Not a fast pace, but one of the longer training runs I've had in awhile.

Nice little night run. 3.25 miles at 7:50 pace. Was enjoyable.

After a long stretch of mostly doing one mile at a time, because I have been extremely busy working on my dissertation and working on other responsibilities, I am going to get back into my training. I don't believe all that Sasha says about "neural fatigue," but I can say that it was hard to get myself running hard when my brain was occupied with other things. But this week I actually felt like running and had some more time, so I set the goal to run 10 miles this week and did it. My goal for next week is 15 miles.

Too bad now the weather is going to turn cold, but I want to show myself that I can push through that again.

Each lap is 1/5 mile. I ran intervals of 1 lap, 2 laps, 3, 2, 3, 2, 1. One lap rest in between. The fastest was 66 seconds on the last one. Average lap speed on the others was 71-76 seconds. Not that fast. I was a little disappointed, but I guess it's important to remember that I was running by myself, and it was the first track workout in a long while. Hopefully I can do this once a week.

From Scott Ensign on Wed, Dec 01, 2010 at 21:46:03 from 207.224.194.157

I stand corrected:

The Field House has a 352 yard (5 lap per mile), 4 lane, Mondo Super X track.

Man, I wish we had a track like that here.

our 220 yard track bites.

and mondo super X... that sounds very high tech.

From Steve Piccolo on Thu, Dec 02, 2010 at 00:11:35 from 67.161.249.226

I'm glad it is 5 laps to a mile, or I would feel even more out of shape. Not sure what Mondo Super X means. Sounds like the name of a downhill skiing event. But it is a pretty decent track. Come teach down here, Scott, and you can run on it every day, rain or shine.

1 mile up State Street with my heavy backpack on, because I missed my bus stop. I felt like I was in the military.

Intervals on BYU Indoor Track. It's been a long time since I did intervals two weeks in a row. This one went pretty well.

10 x 1 lap with 1 lap rest.

Times were approximately 70, 66, 64, 64, 62, 63, 64, 64, 62, 59.

I'm really glad I got under 60 on the last one. If it were a full 400m, this time would equate to about a 74.

I had the flu last week, and I'm too busy otherwise to put much time into running right now. Plus I've wimped out with the cold. So I'll have to delay my plans to get my fitness back on track.

Sorry to hear. Hope you get better soon.

I have wimped out this year as well, and the funny thing is that it really has not been all that cold (for Utah in the winter, anyway) most of the time!

MERRY CHRISTMAS!
