My family and I went up to St. George Friday evening and stayed at my cousin' house.  When I woke up Saturday morning and saw white on the grass and wet streets I was nervous, but when I went outside and saw that nothing was falling from the sky and there was absolutely no breeze, I figured we where in for some good race weather.

Doone ran the 5 k and did great!  We showed up about 15 minutes before start time. Doone stayed in the car while I did a quick 8 minute warm up run.  I decided to go with a long sleeve running shirt, running cap, shorts, and gloves.  We headed over to the start line.  I looked for anyone I recognized, didn't see anyone, said high to the guy next to me and they announced the race would start in a minute.  Perfect timing!

They said go and and off we went.  I still didn't have a race plan accept to run comfortably hard and not worry about time.  I set my watch so I could see what my pace for the mile I was on was, but so that I couldn't see my overall time.  I had to force myself not to go out too fast early.  It always seems so easy in the beginning.  When I got to the first big hill on the 5th mile I backed of a tad so that I wouldn't red line.  That hill is where I lost Fly last year.  What a difference a year makes.  I had such a cloudy head while running last year.  I never felt good.  This year I always had my head about me and never felt too uncomfortable.

Right about mile 5 the women's race leader caught up to me and was receiving big cheers from the fans looking for the first woman.  I said to her that I didn't know I had so many fans.  It was fun running with her for about the next 3 or 4 miles, but then she faded off some and looks like ended up finishing about a minute and a half behind me.

With about 2 miles to go I could see a little group of 3 runners up ahead that I seemed to be slowly catching.  I finally got to about 10 yards behind them with about half mile to go and once I got that close I sped up and ran right past them hoping that none of the would be able to go with me, and it worked.  I ran my hardest to the finish and was amazed to see my overall time when I turned the corner to the final stretch.  I sprinted in completely spent, but with a new 1/2 marathon PR of 1:24:09.  AP 6:25  And it was a much tougher course than my previous PR.

I was surprised at how even my splits were considering the hills:

1  6:21

2  6:30

3  6:17

4  6:24

5  6:45  The first big hill

6  6:11  Coming back down

7  6:23

8  6:30  Climbing again

9  6:41  Still climbing

10  6:20

11  6:30  Starting to get tired

12  6:25  Good thing I had that small group of runners to focus on

13  6:16  Dug deep on the last mile

0.1  5:35 pace,  sprinting to the finish

The race was fun, but it was great to see everyone at the Forum Flyers Union for lunch.  Teena and Smooth, Doone absolutely adored the two of you.  How could she not?  Thanks for encouraging her on her running and congrats to everyone on their great races.

Rhett, you ARE AMAZING! To comeback from your injury at Boston last year, to run such a fast race. Way to go! Quite a few PRs set this weekend. Congrats!

Fantastic race report. I loved hearing about the part where you were joking with the leading woman. Great job on the PR and what an awesome way to start the year.

Rhett!!!! YOU'RE AWESOME!!! CONGRATS on the PR on a tough hilly course! Kudos to Doone as well! She is absolutely drop dead gorgeous!!! You should have posted her race report here!

Keeping our fingers crossed for her and you getting into the SGM lottery.

It was so fun to see you at the post race party. You sure have a darling family!

You are gonna do FANTASTIC at Boston. Can't wait to see you two again there!

I had a similar experience when the front runner for the men's 70-74 age group came up and passed me. The crowd was cheering him on and I just felt dejected and let him go. He ended up beating me by a couple of minutes.

Anyways...

One word, Rhett: FAST!

OK, one or two more: Well done!

Superman!!!! I was looking for you as all the elites came flying by. I just knew you'd be up there with them. I guess I didn't recognize you. Excellent job to you and your wife. Glad you had a lot of fun!!!

From Burt on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 13:10:02 from 206.19.214.144

Strangers in the race, exchanging glances, wondering while they chase, what were the chances, they could both be fast running bloggers...

AmberG from the blog was the top female finisher. I can't remember if she had the lead the whole time, so not sure if it was her you ran with.

From Burt on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 13:12:47 from 206.19.214.144

Okay, I re-read Amber's race report. Looks like she didn't take the lead 'til mile 11.

From Rhett on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 13:24:24 from 74.41.249.102

Actually Burt, I just read her report and I think that was her. She was leading at about mile 5 when I made the comment about having fans on the course. Then the other lady came up and I started running with her for the next few miles, so I guess I really ran with both of them.

From Andy on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 13:30:34 from 159.212.71.199

Perfectly executed race plan. Congrats on the PR.

From Teena Marie on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 14:07:40 from 155.99.200.198

A huge congrats to both you and Doone!! Seriously Rhett -- it is hard for me to fathom how fast you were running. WICKED SPEED!!! You really are impressive!

It was GREAT being able to chat with you and Doone! I can totally see how you two fit. She is AWESOME and I really really really hope she gets into SGM. You two could be the couple to beat!!! (It is obvious that she has a lot of speed in her!)

YOU ROCK!!! Truly!!! :)

From Mack on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 16:45:55 from 71.111.182.118

Way to go Rhett!! Nice PR and amazing finish.

When the front runners came flying by (at about mile 11 for them)I turned to my friend Rich and said "one of these guys in the top 20 or so is going to be named Rhett. I have never met him but have seen his picture". So every one that flew by that looked anything close to your picture elicited a "go Rhett" from me. They all gave me a weird look. But one of them gave me a slight wave of the hand. Was that you?

Anyway, congrats again on a great race!

From Huans32 on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 16:56:34 from 138.64.8.51

Awesome job on beating your time last year. Dang a full 5 mins plus at that too. Looks like the xtraining you did while recovering may of even sped you up some.:)

From Rhett on Mon, Jan 25, 2010 at 17:19:52 from 216.67.211.75

Mac, yep, I heard you and thought, I bet that was Mac. Thanks for the encouragement. I was starting to dig deep at that time and needed every bit of help.
