| kicked 28 lengths in pool. I must be the worst kicker on the planet, as everyone else who kicks just dusts me. It is very discouraging. Then I ran 1 mile on the USU quad in my five fingers. My hike to saddle rock yesterday hammered me-straight up and down, hard on the foot. I cant believe my 8 year olds motored right up the mountain without a single complaint. They slid most of the way down on their butts.

| new shoe- new balance 790, recommended by Jason, a minimalist trail shoe, very light, low heel. Reviewed here by some local guy named Paul, he seems to know a little about running . I am following Dan Lieberman's advice- stay out of rigid shoes with big built up heels, run on the midfoot, take short rapid strides, land under the hip, not extended. Pretty much same as chi approach Paul suggested. I notice my stride has increased to about 190-200 turnovers by consciously using this technique with no real change in effort or speed on the easy workouts. keeping the mileage low and the surfaces soft for awhile. watching for foot/shin pain. 3.1 miles river trail in 22:18. Geez, I now have more active shoes than Imelda Marcos had in her heyday.

| 3.7 river trail. uneventful until I came within a step or two of running over a rattlesnake in the middle of the path on the way down. stopped to warn a lady coming up the trail with two little kids. then I met Carol R. as she was running from campus. |

| back to the pavement for the first time in weeks. decided to continue the lieberman/chi running experiment by using my lightest, lowest heel flat I have, the brooks T4. I really love that shoe. So I did 0.2 slow then picked it up for what I intended to be a 5K tinman tempo, employing the chi running technique. Ended up easily running the 5K at a 6:33 pace, feeling at the end I could have gone on for several more miles at that pace. quite happy given I haven't done any speed or tempo work in ages and after time off. I am starting to gain confidence in the chi approach- it certainly did not affect my speed at a tempo pace. Question is whether the leg and foot can handle higher mileages with these minimalist shoes I am using, especially if I run more on pavement? I will take the mileage up slow and watch the leg carefully, but right now everything feels fine. |
