new shoe- new balance 790, recommended by Jason, a minimalist trail shoe, very light, low heel. Reviewed here by some local guy named Paul, he seems to know a little about running . I am following Dan Lieberman's advice- stay out of rigid shoes with big built up heels, run on the midfoot, take short rapid strides, land under the hip, not extended. Pretty much same as chi approach Paul suggested. I notice my stride has increased to about 190-200 turnovers by consciously using this technique with no real change in effort or speed on the easy workouts. keeping the mileage low and the surfaces soft for awhile. watching for foot/shin pain. 3.1 miles river trail in 22:18.

Geez, I now have more active shoes than Imelda Marcos had in her heyday.

Good to see you back at it. Those 790's look sweet...I hope they work out for ya.

Joe, thanks for the note, the 790s are indeed cool. Paul's review is dead on if you read it. I actually like the response you get from them, though I didn't take them on the single track. are you running freedom run on the 4th? I wanted to but have decided to just lay down and increase a base slow and easy for the rest of the summer.

What size are your feet? I bought a pair of NB800 (essentially identical to NB790) that I have hardly used and may be willing to sell.

Nice shoe. The first week or so, I noticed my calves working more - I looked forward to this little burn, but it went away after the second week :{

From redrooster on Tue, Jun 23, 2009 at 17:13:57 from 129.123.3.31

Jason- I have already noticed that calf burn. Lieberman says it is a good thing so I guess we are doing the right thing-and the five fingers should burn you good!! he really pushes those.

Jon- In new balance I usually have to go with an 11, though sometimes 10.5 will work.

I am the same Emelda Marcos wise - today the foot felt much better and I'm eyeing the 5 fingers again. But I think I'm going to get the NB 790s and mix and match. As for calf burn, well, it is amazing in the 5 fingers, but you probbaly need to stick to softer surfaces than I did to start.

I am miserable not running but am finally starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel....

These are 9.5's, though they are very tight and fit more like 9's. Hmm, too bad. Or I guess you could cut the toes out.

Jon,

they might fit me but I'm not back in the US (logan) until end of August...
