I have a good friend/old mission buddy who lives in Riverton so I came down to run this with him. I have to treat him well so he will throw me enough FF miles to get us to Tromsø Norway next June for the midnight sun marathon. That is our plan anyway.

This was a fun race, very well executed, I like the local flavor of runs like this, well organized, nice people, great atmosphere, though a little too much traffic in a few places. I found the course (I mapped it here, accurately I think) to be very challenging- lots of turns, and some really nasty hills. The hills came as very steep downgrades or upgrades, some on paved switchbacks, so I couldn't really take advantage of the downhills to offset the losses I had on the uphills. There was also a constant 7-10 mph wind out of the north and I got too strung out from others to do any drafting. There was also a tough section on the Jordan river parkway were they were doing construction where we had to run about 0.4 miles on ungraded soft gravel. Running on the parkway was nice though.

Now that I know how to get mile splits off my garmin I can see how I did:

6:21, 6:26, 6:08, 6:44, 6:33, 6:36, 6:48, 6:44, 6:54, 7:15, 6:57, 6:26 for 13 miles. And that is the distance my garmin called the race. There were so many turns it may have gotten confused, but I am guessing the course was 0.05-0.1 miles short. Anyway I obviously crashed a bit toward the end but recovered for the last mile.

Managed to win the over 40, was hoping to run a little faster than this but first race on a tough course, I will take it.

Drove back to Logan and did a big chem demo for my twins birthday party. Now I am quite wiped out. I'm not getting any younger.

Congrats on a strong half!

thanks guys! Matt- I posted to your report. geez I was frustrated I couldn't stay with you, I was really trying to catch you but it was not to be today. I am doing SLC half, maybe we can meet at the start and try to pace off each other for awhile if I can get in good enough shape by then to stay with you, but you definitely have the edge now. Let's touch base before then if you are interested.

Great job on the race!!! I think the course is super tough, so times are always a little slower. Darn that construction and wind!

Your map is good. I do think that you might have missed the last portion of the trail, I think you have you paralleling the neighborhood roads, but the trail veers West. At About mil 8.5, you can see a round-a-bout on the map, then the trail is west of that. Can you see it??? I have run that route SO many times, I am an expert. ;o)

Not that any of that matters, BTW!!!

From Scott Ensign on Sun, Mar 28, 2010 at 23:37:33 from 71.35.219.159

oh yeah, no wonder my course distance ran long on gmap, saying 13.2. I actually remember that round about. that is the first time I have run the parkway. I plan to be back next year for this race, I thought it was pretty fun!

Great job on the age division win. and 8th place overall.

Scott, it was fun seeing you on 1300 West early in the race before I had to get to other duties. Nice run, you smoked Ostler!

From Kelli on Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 11:54:51 from 71.219.89.155

Well, the fact you could even find the parkway on satellite is impressive!

I agree, it is one of the best organized races I have ever run, and that was last year----the FIRST year. This year was amazing. I wonder if they will go back to the old course or keep this one???

From JulieC on Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 11:57:50 from 71.219.44.247

I vote for this for this year's course. Starting and ending at the same place is a big bonus and helps with crowd control. Don't you think?

From Kelli on Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 12:04:04 from 71.219.89.155

I do like how they start and finish were at the same place, and this years finish line is a much bigger park (good thing, with twice as many runners)! Riverton City would not let them finish there last year due to baseball starting on the same day. But this year they gave in because of the construction on the trail. I guess we will have to wait and see.

The original course was easier at mile 4. You did climb a .2 steep hill, but then you got to run DOWN what you guys ran up this year. Other than that, I do not think there is a huge difference. You got to finish the race running down the hill behind the pool (this year it was just after mile 5), but I actually thought that was hard at the end of a race.

I did not race this years course, but I ran it twice to help with measuring it. I think either course has goods and bads. The number one fight they had was with the Sheriffs Department having to cross runners on 12600 South twice, they did not want to do that. Now that they have, maybe they will see that it was not so bad!

From Scott Ensign on Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 21:29:49 from 65.100.218.98

I think it is a great course and they should stick with it. I too like races that start and stop at the same place. It is a hassle to shuttle, unless it is some big time race. But I prefer the smaller folksy ones like this one anyway. There are too many downhill races in northern Utah already, I like that this is an honest course and not aided.

In retrospect I would have liked to run the course ahead of time to see what I was in for. I wasn't planning on the hills, thought it would be fairly flat, so psychologically I got a little intimidated when I descended onto the parkway and realized I had to come back up again and didn;t know what the hills would look like. But now that I know, no problem, I will be ready for next year!

From Kelli on Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 22:56:06 from 71.219.89.155

Dang, if I had known, I would have given you a good description! It is a tough course, and very well done, and small, and just plain one of the best!!!

I love the hill on the trail, it is the S-curve that kicks my fanny every time. In fact, every time we run it I walk it. The only time I ever actually ran it was the race last year. I hate that thing.

I heard so many people call it an HONEST course. I was not sure what they meant, but now I get it.

Okay, no more talk about this race. We do not want to make it too popular!!! They have to cap it at 500 anyway, and they were close this year.
