mile marker 20 to 15 on the TOU course. But I missed the weird turn from the half marathon route that loops around the maverick, so shortcut the course by 0.3 miles on the way out. Amazing how easy it is to miss the turns going the wrong way. 9.7 miles in 1:11:35, so 7:22 average pace.

left foot hurts a little. right now I am going to treat it as a "run through it" annoyance. I'm doing most of my miles in five fingers and minimal shoes, hopefully I won't blow up my calves or achilles or get a stress fracture in the process.  I also took the sock liners out of my 790s to give my feet a little more room.

Nice pace!

One thing to at least be conscious of is, if it hurts, there might be an issue. I doubt you will get a stress-fracture if you never run through weird pain. You could certainly hold out hope that you won't get side-swiped by a diesel if you run red-lights, but the odds of getting hurt probably go way up.

Not that I know anything, but just an observation to be careful what pain you run through:)

thanks Aaron, great advice and great points.

my left foot always seems to give me varying degrees of trouble. Right now I think it might be a pinched nerve or something. but if it gets worse I will reassess and adjust!

Big question is- keep running in uncushioned shoes or cushioned, or a mix... both types of running seem to have risks for me. rigid cushioned shoes cause posterial tibial tendon problems.. uncushioned hurt the feet more... maybe time to just start biking?

Maybe biking is right! except there is no fastbikingblog.com so how boring. Just kidding.

I have noticed that in my transition to fully barefoot or FF running, my feet have hurt a lot throughout the process. I haven't yet worked up to feeling like I can run every day pain free. So I have opted to not run on days my feet feel stiff. If you want to run every day in the transition perhaps the way to do it is to wear shoes every other day. Or you could go cold turkey like me and rotate in some biking on the off days. I do intend to get to the point where my feet are strong enough or accustomed enough to run every day, but I don't know when that will be yet.

I have noticed that they have consistently become stronger and that I can do more and more mileage with less and recovery time. By that I mean less stiffness in my feet after the run, and especially the next morning. Or minor sore spots in my feet. Now it seems like my feet are only stiff the next day if I pushed them harder or longer the previous day...whereas early on they were always stiff the next day, or two.

One thing to consider if you have had consistent issues in your left foot is rolfing. Ever had any of that done?

About a year and a half ago I was having major issues in my left foot with tendon and weird pain, which caused me not be able to flex my foot very far and caused me pain biking and running. I went to a rolfer who made the problem disappear in a matter of 3 different sessions with him. I was amazed. I think the essence of what he did was to brake up adhesions in between the bones and ligaments with his fingers which allowed my foot to operate with the full range of motion and it fixed the issue. Since then, I have tried to copy his technique on myself and have had success in resolving some of the minor foot pain through this transition to barefoot running.

rolfing- weird name but that sounds EXACTLY like what I need. I get this little kink/stabbing pain in my feet that feels like something just isn't meshing right sometimes when I roll/twist my foot in different directions. OK- I am going to see if anyone here does rolfing.

and yes, the transition to the FF seems to bring with it more of this foot pain stuff. I am mixing up the running in different shoes to try to ease into it. anyway great info, thanks!!! off to find the rolfer...
