9:00am

When I got dressed this morning Kym was like "What is that? Are you really going to wear that?" I said "Heck yes! I'm gonna wear this! And I'm gonna win!" Preston and Carl both thought I was over dressed too and made plenty of flamer jokes, but hey, I can take it and I finished ahead of them both :)

I started up front and went out too fast as usual and I thought I saw Thaine up in front of me, but I wasn't sure if it was him. I didn't talk to him before the race and I couldn't remember exactly what he looked like. I was trying my best to slow the pace down to about 7:00 for the first couple miles and eventually lost site of him since he was holding 6:50's. About a half mile before I got to the 10k turn around a different guy passed me on his way back and said "see you at the finish dude". Then I thought oh crud that must have been Thaine and he's about a mile in front of me now. Disappointed, I just kept it steady even though I was going slower than my goal pace. I figured I might still have something left in the tank later for a strong finish even if I couldn't beat him. After mile 9 I decided it was time to pick it up and at least try to beat my PR from last year since I definitely wasn't going to beat my 15k pace and probably wouldn't even beat Thaine unless he got lost or something. Now I'm doing sub 7's and picking off runners one by one and near the end of mile 12 I see the first guy I thought was Thaine and powered past him and another guy maybe 30 yards ahead of him. After that it was hard to keep motivated with no one in front of me, the 12th place finisher was probably already done by now. It turned out that the guy in mile 12 was the real Thaine so it was kind of fitting that his fate was the same as mine in the last race :) He ran strong the whole way and let me pass him at the end to win by less than a minute. Afterwards we shook hands, exchanged phone numbers and we'll probably do some training runs together since we live only a few miles apart. Thaine is a very cool guy and very fast! I'm sure he will keep me at the top of my game.

YEAH!!!!! You did it! You beat him (and made a running friend for life), you PR'd, and you ran AMAZINGLY. It must have been that outfit, you crazy guy!!!!

All righty then, what is the next goal?????? You are ON FIRE!

All I'm worried about now is maintaining my current level of fitness until the Green River Marathon without getting injured again. I think I'm ready to BQ, but I still have 2 months until my next attempt. No more races before that, just moderate training, maybe 40-50 mpw.

From Kelli on Sat, Mar 20, 2010 at 18:20:48 from 71.219.89.82

NO INJURIES, that is KEY!!! You are gonna do GREAT! You will BQ easy.

Nice race and very nice improvement over last year. I saw all the flames but I thought I was hallucinating!

Atta boy! Sounds like you had a lot left over in the reserve tanks. Great job!

Way to go. I like the flames. Like Kelli said, YOU'RE ON FIRE.

Way to go, Rattletrap! I *KNEW* the flames would help you WTF!! I'm so happy for you and you even turned a foe into a friend! The outfit is AWESOME and the results are amazing! You've got to be super excited about this finish! Good luck training for your BQ. You're well on your way! Flame on!

Thanks for the nice comments everybody. This was a great race for me and gave me lots of confidence for GreenRiver... Unfortunately, I just found out yesterday that they had to change the course and GreenRiver won't be a Boston Qualifier this year :( Now I need to find another qualifier that works with my schedule and my wallet. I'm thinking about Wenatchee(4/17) or Eugene(5/2)...

From Burt on Mon, Mar 22, 2010 at 12:35:14 from 206.19.214.144

Bummer! I would ask Sean Sundwall which one he recommends.

From Snoqualmie on Mon, Mar 22, 2010 at 12:43:53 from 24.18.192.33

Eugene is lovely; you would like it I think. And now they finish inside Hayward Field, which is so cool. I definitely want to run it again sometime soon. But you know, all the cool people are running Newport this year! ;)

From rAtTLeTrAp on Mon, Mar 22, 2010 at 15:24:19 from 75.230.194.78

Eugene is looking like my best option so far. Newport is sold out, but they might make room for one more if they saw my excellent running outfit :)

I just hate paying $100 to run a race. I was really looking forward to a freebie. I may run GRM anyway if I can BQ before then. Or maybe I'll just run the 1/2 with Kym and pace her...

From rAtTLeTrAp on Mon, Mar 22, 2010 at 15:31:56 from 75.230.194.78

Burt - I did send Sean a PM. Thanks for the tip. Hopefully he can offer some fastrunning wisdom.
