what's a mileage board?

From DLTheo on Wed, Aug 03, 2011 at 19:57:57 from 155.130.107.20

Won't be long before you're back on it, I bet. It sure has gotten a lot more competitive the last month or so, since summer hit.

From Kam on Thu, Aug 04, 2011 at 00:52:01 from 174.23.219.156

Allie, a mileage board is a piece of lumber, usually a 2x4 that is up to 8 feet long. Many runners use them as a way to keep track of mileage, race times and quarter mile splits. Sometimes a sharpie is used to make these inscriptions, although pocket knives, soldering irons and other implements can be used. When the board becomes full, and no more data recording is possible, the runner conducts a ceremonial burning of the wood, in a sort of throwback pagan ritual to appease the running goddess, Atalanta.

very interesting, kam. thanks so much for the information. i'm new to the sport, and sometimes i don't always understand the lingo that is thrown around this blog. i feel stupid asking, but i figure there are people like you who will answer my questions without judging me. i stopped by wasatch running center on my way home from work to pick up my first mileage board, but unfortunately they are on back order. apparently they have been sold out since about two weeks before the wasatch back. i'm greatful i can learn so much from this fast running blog.

There is a groupon for overstock 8' mileage boards right now at Home Depot! If you buy 1000 units they are almost free. I know most people only use 3 or 4 in a lifetime, but how can you afford not to stock up at this price?

Looks like your new picture is of you participating in the mileage board burning ritual. I see you went with the newer Viking version as opposed to the classic gladiator ceremony, which involves rolling in the fire. Good call!

How did National Crime night go?

From rAtTLeTrAp on Thu, Aug 04, 2011 at 20:27:26 from 72.102.102.57

April - haha my condos are more like a retirement community so our National NIGHT Out Against Crime "party" was scheduled from 4:30pm to 6:30pm :) It was nice to hang out with the neighbors, but it all wrapped up pretty early. Maybe the mileage board burning ceremony creeped them out a little ...

Hahha sounds like they are scared to be out when the crime is out!
