Short-Term Running Goals:

Okay, so for 2013 I am going to have FUN! Not that running isn't always fun, but I had a wonderful breakthrough year last year and I want to play this year :) AND get faster! So, my first goal I'm going to put out there is my yearly mileage goal.
It is 2,186 miles from my driveway to my sister (QP's) driveway! I want to spend this year on a virtual trek cross country running those miles. So, that is how far I will run in 2013...from my house to QPs. It will take all year and yes, this is measured on Hwys so it isn't really exactly how I COULD run it, but good enough. 43 miles/week...totally doable, and a fun goal to track how far I've traveled as I go along. Who knows...maybe I'll even run PAST her house :)

I will do more trail runs, Boston, Pacing duties, another Half IM and some other tris. I'm excited for this next year and look forward to having fun with all of you out on the roads, and trails! Maybe bag a few peaks this year too!!

Long-Term Running Goals:

Big Dreams: 5K in 20:2X; 10K in 39:XX; Half in 1:29:XX; Full in 3:15:XX; complete the Rim2Rim2Rim run and not die; Comrades; Iron(wo)Man.

Run for the rest of my life!

Personal:

4 children: twelve, eight, five and baby Fartlek - 2 1/2. Wonderful supportive husband that lets me drag him and the family all over for race after race!

Finished 13 marathons and LOVE running that distance! I'm definitely hooked to the marathon monster and hope to constantly improve my endurance, speed and stay injury free!

I've also found a love of trail running! I hope to keep improving on this front.

After being injured with a broken foot at the first of 2012 I found a tri group and started training with them and am now loving tris! The half IM was harder than I'd ever imagined...and am ready to do it again. I'll earn my bike butt and someday have enough time to train for a full IM.

Easy day :)

Ran up Corner Canyon with some Tri peeps again today. I really like making this a Friday tradition. It is a great run, and I felt a lot stronger today too!

Met at the equestrian center and then went up to Ghost Falls, but then went South to the other side of the gully. I liked this trail better. It felt more flat...until I ran down it! Maybe my legs are getting used to hills after all.

Great run down, felt more like I could open things up and really run! Until I miss-stepped and got my first battle scars on the trail. Now I feel like a true trail runner...a little hard core :) The water bottle in my R hand saved my hand from getting torn up and my arm from breaking...so I'll take it along next time too.

AP: 9:46 splits: 10:59, 11:31, 11:08 (turn around 1300 ft of gain), 8:20, 9:06 (fall, didn't stop the watch), 7:33 (more like it!).

Now for my regular outdoor morning of lawn mowing and yard work. Race the garbage man!! :)

Holy Crappy Crap Run... yeah, one of those.

I think I just over did it yesterday, was dehydrated,  and didn't get any sleep. I worked from sun up to sun down yesterday and probably got 20 minutes off my feet. Most of it outside, it was a beautiful day, but the sun can drain you! Add to that a touch of soreness from the Canyon run yesterday...yeah, it wasn't pretty.

I'd decided to run from my house up to where the closed part of Mtn View Corridor starts (avoid the BIG hill) and then work on those rollers out and back, then come home. I thought it would only be 12 miles, but at the turn around I was at 7. Figured I'd get out of the last mile or so and have to have hubby pick me up on the way to soccer, I was good with that :)

To be honest when I started out I felt slow and sluggish, but figured it would fade. I did have my hand held water bottle which saved me! I passed some people cleaning up a yard where someone had run over 2 trees and a light pole...that road is infamous for those kind of things happening. A wide and major road through the neighborhoods, but only 25mph...people rarely go that slow. I didn't stop to ask, because I didn't realize exactly what had happened until I passed the car on the tow truck and ran over the sand soaking up the gasoline. It was crazy! The light pole was obliterated...AND 2 big-ish trees. Wow...anyway, I digress.

When I got to the corridor I saw 2 ladies with dogs in front of me. When I passed them I said "good morning ladies" one of them nearly died of a heart attack! I guess I've got soft foot falls :)

The miles home were sluggish and slow and I kept waiting for the downhill to come. I'd get little bursts of it, but the grade really never seemed to relent...I was tired, but as I kept looking at my garmin, I kept doing the math and realizing I had MORE than enough time to get home...no free ride today. I need a good pick up song on the ipod...nothin'. With just 1.5 left I had 10 min to still get home before my 2 hours that I'd budgeted for 12 miles, crap. I was easily going to make it...even at a 9mm pace.

So, I begrudgingly finished the run, I felt like crap and I still do. I'm glad tomorrow is a rest day.

AP: 8:49 splits: 8:51, 9:03, 9:10, 7:50, 8:19, 8:46, 8:41, 8:39, 8:38, 9:19, 9:38, 8:33, 8:47, 9:04

After I got home I looked at the elevation profile and realized that I reach the high point in this run just 3 miles into the run. Those rollers on the corridor that I was positive were rolling up....nope. DOWNHILL rollers on the way out (South). This totally blows my mind! No wonder I felt sluggish on the way home, what I thought was downhill is the uphill part. How the crap does that work? Man, rollers really screw with your mind! So, I've decided to make this a regular run. PERIOD. I will conquer these rollers, because they remind me of SGM. It is downhill, but every time you go down all you see is another UP. Mark my words...I will beat this road...oh yes, I will! If anyone ever wants to join me on this run it really is a good SGM trainer :)

THE COMEDY OF ERRORS! (yes, it is long...but it will make you feel better about your day when you finish!)

So, I learned it takes a lot longer to get out of the house for a ride than a run...should be self-explanatory, but when I'm setting my alarm clock I always think I'm super woman and can get ready a lot faster than I EVER do!

I was going as fast as possible to get to the Queen of the Hill ride this morning, because as per above...I was late. They give you 10 min to get ready before roll-out time though, so that helped. Pumped up my tires (kind of ... more later), and I was off! I had talked to Danielle about how to get my speed better and I was working on it and feeling strong, but I kept feeling each rock I was rolling over more and more...crap, yup. First time for everything - lets just say I learned a LOT about changing a flat tire, the right kind of tubes to buy, how to PROPERLY use my CO2 gun for the tire, how to put a back wheel back on the bike and chain AND that when you fill up your tires it is always a good idea to CLOSE the valve that you have to open to pump them up, if you don't...you get a flat!

The sweet, wonderful, amazing and nice women that rode with me stopped and got a quick lesson on how to change a tire too. I was grateful that Kristie (Ironwoman!) was there to show me the ropes. I'm also glad running shoes don't get flats! But, then I felt like a pile of poo. Because yesterday I was asking if we could really get back in time, because I needed to be on my way home by 7:30 so hubby could go to work. Everyone was saying "you don't have to wait, just go ahead and you'll be fine...but it is a no drop, so we will all regroup." So, I was already feeling like a bum that I wouldn't be able to wait and regroup with everyone...but what happens?!? I get the flat and 6-8 people stopped and helped and waited for me and in turn sacrificed THEIR ride and miles so I could be helped...when I was the one that was going to ditch them last night. What a piece of poo I am and what wonderful women they are! SO giving and self-less, not me...I'm all about sticking to MY time schedule.

After the tire change got to the top of Camp Williams and enjoyed the ride down...I thought we'd still do the full ride, but when I got to 2100N I couldn't see anyone. They'd turned a lot earlier. Crap, now I was alone...with no tubes or cartridges left. So, I turned and finally caught them at the Maverick in Riverton. As we were crossing the street, I realized I'd forgotten to change gears and was in downhill beast gear...which is really hard to pedal from a stop, but I was powering through it, unclipped. Then..whamo! My foot slipped off the pedal and my crotch slammed into the seat (yes boys, it hurts us too!). Man, oh man...are we done yet? I should've stayed in bed.

Got back to the shop (where we start) at 7:25, perfect. But, with only 18.5 miles. Oh well...it is about the experience, right? Got off my bike and walked it the 5 feet to the car, then...whamo! the pedal scrapes across my leg...right over my battle wounds from Friday's trail run fall. REALLY?!? Man, oh man...I really should've stayed in bed. I thanked Kristie for her help (and now owe her at least one good tube) and set off for home. Ride. over. thank. you.

I got home feeling like crap! My emotions were on a high low (figure that one out!) and all I wanted to do was eat a dozen dunford donuts on the couch and watch tv. I did NOT want to go to the gym, face the ladies that hate me and baby in the gym, get on a TM for an hour and try to feel good. nope. no. way! But, I let routine take over and got in the car and just went. My 5 yr old started crying "I don't want to go to the gym!" I replied "I don't either! But, sometimes we just have to suck it up and do what we need to do. So, we're going to the gym." Positive reinforcement :)

I decided to break up the run - 3 miles on the TM, 1 track, 3 TM, 1 track. Give me a bit of a break from the monotony of the hamster run.

3 miles @ 1% TT: 23:45 AP: 7:54 splits: 8:34, 7:41, 7:41 (except sped up to 7:03 last 1/4 mile)

2 on track - no idea on pace, but I'd guess around an 8:00, because the 8:20 on the TM when I got back on felt slower. So, somewhere in there. I decided to do 2, because I was enjoying it and I didn't want to have to END my run on the track.

3 TM miles @1% TT: 23:25 AP: 7:48 splits: 8:20, 7:41, 7:41, except the last .35 I went progressive to 7:03 then 6:30 the last .10

Chatted with Wendy as I cooled down a .10 on a walk, then did my exercises (2 sets) and grabbed my kids before the nursery sent them to the orphanage for abandonment, because I was over my hour :)

I felt SO much better when I was done. I felt functional and happy and baby didn't even get reprimanded ONCE in the nursery! They said he even was having a conflict with another child and he came and got a teacher to help! WOW, he's learning! Running is my favorite. Biking and swimming are fun x-trainers and a break from the run, but running makes me happy and is my primary religion :)  I don't get those endorphins anywhere else...and I don't get flats and have to remember to pack 500 things for a run! I JUST RUN!

blah. well, that all said...I signed up for the Utah half tri (half ironman distance, but not an 'ironman' race) in August. I guess it is a good thing I now know how to change a tire...and how to pump one up and not be an idiot!!! There will be more rides in my future, until then anyway :)

Regular ol' loop with the Regular ol' crowd...but I love it.

Carolyn (George's neighbor) came today as well. I ran most of the run with her and had fun talking about Jr High, HS and college. We went the same places! Small world, but I'm old so she only knows my little bro-in-law.

Last week, we did this loop at a sub 8mm pace, I FELT like I was giving the same energy today, but moving at a 10mm pace. I guess I should've eaten yesterday. I was busy and forgot until 7:30 when we had dinner...oops. So, lack of fuel and hydration I think played the greatest part of me feeling like crap today. Oh well, I got it done.

I'd forgotten to switch the garmin from bike mode after yesterday's comedy of errors. So, my garmin showed me in mph...nice. A 7.0 mph bike ride is pretty slow :) Oh, well. No splits - bike mode only has one total lap. BUT, it shows my AP at 8:36. Not too shabby for a craptastic run!

I bought trees and flowers yesterday that I need to plant before it gets hot this morning, so now I'm done...except for the yard work.

Slept in...oh, how beautiful 9 hours of sleep is!!!

Spin class, good stuff...not a really rough class, but still good.

3 min transition

1 mile on the TM 8:34 @ 1%

2 miles on the track (11 laps/mile) - on/off for the full 2 miles. Fast miles were 30 seconds (some closer to 27, some closer to 32...so I'm going to say 30) and the slow 45-50. This was a great speed workout. I stole it from Kelli yesterday. I've always thought about doing this, but just went for the simplicity of the TM...well, Kelli gave me the courage to do it today and I was grateful for the break from the TM.

1 mile cool-down on the TM 8:27 @ 1%

exercises for running (3 sets) with 30:30:30 planks on the ball at the end of each set. I would've done more, but was running out of daycare time.

Finally got everything planted in the yard and can now take care of the tornado that has hit the inside the last couple days of outdoor work. Heavens, I don't know how y'all can keep this up!

besides not getting the message that we weren't meeting until 5:30 (I got there at 5:00 and slept in the car for 20 min), it was just a wonderful usual loop.

Race: Utah Valley Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:52:31
Total Distance
14.80

What a race! I didn't like the 2:45 AM wake up call, but the riding there with bye-wing (her 1st half!!) and then meeting some friends at the buses was a great time! Took the long ride up to the start and made our way to the pops. They quickly announced the bag truck was leaving in 15min. What the heck? The race didn't start for like 30-45 min! Oh well, time to get our cold on! After quickly getting bags on the trucks we lined up at the back and the gun went off. We were about 5 min behind start time...wonderful placement! Not much weaving.

Just before we started and after the crowd had cleared, a space blanket came floating by and Danielle grabbed it. I jumped in the warmth with her and then she was going to throw it away...oh no, not this one :) I decided I needed a cape. So, I tucked the extra long (seriously like 7+ feet long) cape in the shoulders of my tank. Plan was to drop it at the first aid station, but then I got attached and decided to keep it!

I ran with Robyn and Danielle for the first few miles and then Robyn dropped behind with a friend. I had told my friend Julie that I would pace her, but couldn't find her at the beginning, so I tried to just run with Danielle and keep her pushing. I was having a great time despite that fact that no one was talking to me. THIS is the big downfall of ipods if you ask me, but then again I'm a BIG talker...anyone that knows me knows that! :)

Saw Lowell around mile 3, he offered to carry my cape...nope, I still liked it! :) Mile 6 station they were handing out gu, but the water girls were WAY behind. I stopped and filled about 10-15 glasses to help out and told Danielle to go ahead and I'd catch up, but she stayed and helped for a while, then I caught up after grabbing one for myself. Then around mile 8 I spotted Smooth on the side with her boot cheering everyone on!! It warmed my heart like no other!! I gave her a big sweaty hug, posed for some pics and had to sprint to catch up with Danielle...again.

Shortly after that Julie's sister ran up next to me and after a few good looks at my face asked if I was Rachel. YES! She told me Julie wasn't too far ahead and what she was wearing. I was off. Since I had my cape on I ran up next to her and said "did someone order a superhero?!?" Julie is a sweet woman! I just love her to pieces and think the world of her. She has a 7 week old baby and just moved into a new house. Her little Ty is adopted and they didn't know until 2 days before he was born that they were getting him! She hadn't trained over 6 miles and has been working like crazy and not sleeping for the last 7 weeks, but she was doing great. You can read her blog HERE - that is how I got to know her, I was her blog stalker for about a year before I ever commented. I'm glad we are friends now! If you want a real tear jerker read Ty's adoption story posted!

Anyway, Danielle and Julie's sister caught back up to us and slowly pulled ahead. I helped/entertained/talked Julie's ear off the rest of the way and she finished in a 1:56!! Which for the amount of training and crazy last 7 weeks?!? amazing! I told her on the last stretch as she felt like she was fading "I may look like a super hero, but you are the REAL superhero!" I finished in 1:52:31, feeling GREAT. Well, except for the stomach that had been bugging me the whole time. Rumbly and sour...blech. But, whatever, I was having the time of my life! I waited a few min for Julie's family to show up and took some pics with her, then went back to run bye-wing in for a strong finish.

Just as a side note, I have to say how much I loved the little kids (especially girls) that would look and point at me, then get their mom's attention to show her super girl! :) Made my day!!! Then, as I was running back to get bye-wing if I saw someone struggling I'd say "you need some super power to get through this!" and offer them knuckles. They'd always just look at me with a smile and give me some knuckles. I loved it! Helping people get that last kick to the finish is always rewarding!

Bye-wing finished strong and under her estimated goal time! I will let her tell her story on her blog. I was SO proud of her and what an awesome job she'd done on her first half!! Now, she has another one in 2 weeks :) gotta love it baby!

After going and watching the marathon finishers for about another hour (I LOVE watching and cheering at a marathon finish, I seriously LOVE it! CONGRATS to you all!!), we grabbed our bags and headed back to the car. They'd had the halfers park at the Provo Towne Center and they had buses back, but we decided to walk the 1.5 miles back. I hope it helped bye-wing work out some of what will be some lingering soreness. Pain we enjoy!

Great Race. Great Day. LOVED my cape (despite that it was probably a pure annoyance for anyone around me...it was long and it was windy. I did really try to be conscious of it and pull it in when I was in a crowd, but then it would turn into a sail...good resistance training!). Loved running with family and friends and seeing them all! I didn't get the miles in this week that I'd hoped for, but sometimes there are more important things than miles :)

Hubby is out of town, a little good and a little bad. It is nice not having to rush home so he can get off to work and kids are off school, so I don't have to worry about them; however, I worry about my kids being home alone while I'm away biking and running. If something happened to me they'd be orphans! I worry a lot.

QoH (queen of the Hill) bike ride early this morning. I forget the "feels 10 degrees cooler on the bike" rule sometimes. I was cold. But, I got through it! Wasn't too bad once the sun came up. Did this one faster than I have in times past which feels good. I was at 16.8 mph. I really wanted to break 17, but we took a different way home and I couldn't power down the hill like I normally do, and I forgot to stop my watch a couple times on re-groups. Oh well, gives me something to shoot for next time! 21.3 miles up and over Camp Williams.

Came home and my feet were still numb and cold! Changed into running shoes and took off for an 8 mile loop. I'd decided to do the Pumpkin run route from my house, which is basically the trails in Herriman, HOMM ran them as well. (as a side note, someday I want to run the HOMM course - mile 16 is at my house, so I want to follow the signs weaving through all the trails to figure it out!) My feet were finally 95% back to normal when I stopped at the turn around for a drink...mile 4! It was cold.

Nice decent downhill to start (with a few rollers thrown in for good measure) and then a good uphill push home, and I added the cove loop on as well to push past 8 and ended up at 8.5 exactly with a nice downhill finish, excellent.

AP: 8:05 splits: 8:31, 7:40, 8:01, 7:43, 8:13, 8:41, 8:20, 7:33, 7:57 (last .5) I'm quite impressed with myself that 8:40 was my slowest mile, I really thought I'd be more in the 9's!

I might take the kids swimming this afternoon and do a few laps myself...we shall see.

10 mile daybreak loop with the Herriman Highlands Group (yes, I've taken it upon myself to name the group. No one knows it yet, but me). Chad, Paul, George, Ronnie "Todd Newton" and myself.

I was SO tired after 15 minutes of getting ready I still couldn't open my eyes all the way in the light, I almost fell asleep putting my shoes on as I sat on the floor and barely made it the 10 min. drive to the meeting point. I really need to get to bed earlier.

I could have stopped and fallen asleep on the side of the road at any point during this run and really wanted to run with my eyes CLOSED! :) I don't think I've ever really caught up from Saturday's 2:30 wake up call. Anyway, it was a bad run and I couldn't keep up with the group. Someone was always willing to hang back with me though, awesome groupies! Then the last 4-5 miles my stomach was cramping up on me. Blech. I just wanted it over with SO bad.

Finished up not loving the run this morning and dreaming of going home to sleep. Plan was to go do lap swimming this morning afterward until I had to pick up my work at 9:00, but I was just too tired. So, swim got knocked off the schedule today and I didn't get it in yesterday either. Maybe tonight...ha, famous last words.

AP: 8:25 splits: 8:35, 8:23, 8:15, 8:25, 8:53 (the hill mile, surprised it isn't a 10!), 8:45, 8:16, 8:15, 8:15, 8:09 - a little progressive finish. Nice.

I think what I need to realize is that somehow I've gotten faster these past few months. Since my recovery from my fracture things have just gone really well...and no aches/pains/injures to speak of (knock on wood)! I think this is a good sign and I hope I can keep getting crappy runs to clock in under 8:30! :)

I kept waking up in a panic last night. I guess I was nervous about getting up in time for the ride at 5:30. The last time I woke it was 4:30, I had 10 more min to sleep...relax and wait for the beep. Well, I woke up at 5:29 - crap! I guess my body just needed the sleep. My friend called me at 10:40 last night as I was crawling into bed (see, I TRIED to get to bed early), just having a rough day - daughter's wedding and her father will probably pass today. She had a lot to talk about.

The only good thing is that I knew the ladies were riding up Rose Canyon, so I got ready and left from my house and just rode up and down 6400W until they came by. Kind of nice not to have to drive anywhere :) Climbed Yellow Fork and I was the one in the back - okay, so the other ladies are crazy riders and really good, but still. The nice thing is they would wait for me, but I wouldn't need to stop so I didn't make their stops long.

I truly believe the bike is the great equalizer. Old can compete with young and 'big' people have more weight to drag uphill, but on the downhill...we FLY! :) it all evens out in the end.

I ended up doing the Rose Canyon Climb, the climb up and over Kennecott, and then from the Rec center a gradual, but constant climb home. My mph were only 14.7, but we did just mosey on a few of the flats. Either way, it was fun stuff and I got 24 miles in without even having to drive anywhere and I slept in an extra hour!

The plan was to head right out for a 5-6 mile run, but my friend again called. Dad was rushed into emergency surgery. Anyway, after another listening session I finally got out (about an hour later) for my run.

During my time in the house my garmin said it had lost satellites, but I know it just automatically reconnects so I didn't think about it. If it shows you how much I look at my garmin, I didn't look to see where I was at until past mile 3. It never re-connected to satellites! I had no distance or speed...just time. crap. Well, I figured I would just run until about 54 min and hope I hit 6 miles. I had to keep winding through the neighborhood to get to 54 minutes. I finally stopped at 53:30 right at home and called it good. Pulled up map my run...I was at 6.83 miles. Whaaa?!? I don't believe it. This is a hard uphill run and there is no way I did it at 7:50 AP. Nope, don't believe it. Well, since I was so close to 7, I checked to see where map my run would hit 7 and I grabbed Lucy and ran the last .17 down the street, then walked home. Did that in 45 seconds which brings my TT: 54:15 and my AP: 7:45. Again...I don't believe it.

I know yesterday I talked about how much faster I feel like I've gotten and how even hard runs seem to be faster, but I just really don't believe this. I looked at the point where I read my 26 minutes on my watch and map my run says that is about mile 3.3 and not remembering seconds or knowing exactly where I looked, I'm guessing, but it says that was around an 8mm and I don't run that fast up that hill. I'm telling you! I've NEVER run that fast up that hill (except with Paul and Chad 6ish weeks ago, but we only did 1/2 of the hill). I just don't see it happening. So, I don't know what went wrong, or if I really did just run that fast, but I just don't believe it.

Urban Trail Loop with the Herriman Highlanders (Chad, George, Paul (no Ringo), Ronnie, Christine and Charles dropped in). Nice chatty run and felt good and easy. I figured I'd probably be up around a 9mm. I really don't know how I'm running so fast (for me) and not feeling it.

AP: 8:39 splits: 9:10, 9:02, 8:37, 8:15, 8:51(this is where the trail starts and I never stop my watch as maneuver around fences and such, so it kind of surprises me it was slow...but I don't think it was all running slow), 8:36, 8:29, 8:12. Nice progressive finish.

Now I've got baby's 2 year well child check. Man, I can't believe it has been two years since I had him! Time flies. I guess I've still got a week to make it officially two years, but still.

I do have an appointment to meet bye-wing at the newly opened reservoir for a swim in my new wet suit at noon!! yipee!! let's hope it fits.

Poo. seriously, a crappy run. crap, crap and crapier.

I don't know if I'm not getting enough sleep (probably most likely), I'm getting sick (kids were sick last weekend, so probable) or I just can't run long anymore (my deepest fear).

6 miles up corner canyon - 1400 ft of elevation gain in the 3 miles up. A decent 11ish pace on the way up and I didn't really open it up on the way down, but kept it steady. I forgot to start my watch for the last mile, so I don't have stats completely. I was tired and feeling weak, but had to get my long run in!

5 miles - from the equestrian center parking lot down to the PRT and then down to the park where it starts, around the park and back up. Stopped at mile 4 and thought about just being done. I had to will myself nearly every step. I was going to do another 2 out and back on the part to the point, but I decided I needed fuel. So, I'd finish up at home. Famous last words.

Was practically falling asleep in the car. When I got home I thought I'd just crash for 20 min until the kids started bugging me and then take them out on their bikes to finish up the last 4ish. Nope, slept for TWO hours! For the next 3 hours every time I'd stand up I'd get light headed and couldn't really focus. So, I sat in my boys' closet and helped them clean (chuck, donate, keep...chuck, chuck, chuck, donate, keep...repeat).

Long run = fail.

AP (for the PRT): 8:37 splits: 8:29, 8:19, 8:46, 8:35, 8:54 - I can't believe I was that fast. I seriously felt like I was running through mud. I was SO tired and exhausted!

16 bike miles from my house to mtn view corridor and then to the end of the unopened section toward Lehi and home. With a little extra loop up to Blackridge and around the Cove on the way home. My friend Steph who is doing Spudman with me is killing the bike! She is going to kick my trash!

Not everyone can be a hero. Someone has to stand on the sidelines and cheer."

-Will Rogers

Today, I got to be the cheerleader! Lauren (11) had her second tri and although I could've raced, I decided to make the day hers.  I had such a great time standing at the top of the hill behind South County Pool and cheering on runners. I'd yell "no walking! Dig Deep! Finish strong! Put it all out there! You got this! Top of the hill baby!!" as I rang my cow bell. I loved the smiles and the people that would start running again. My favorite comment was "you need to get paid to do this!" No, your extra push I can see you giving and the smile on your face is the only reward I need! I know what it is like to be on the other side, and I hope not a single runner got by me without feeling motivated. I did that for the adult race as I watched bye-wing and her son finish, then again as Lauren and bye-wing's two younger ones raced. I also followed Lauren along, cheering at the swim, T1, bike, T2 and run. My niece took 2nd overall! What a rockstar! My 8 yr old nephew took 1st in his AG and Lauren took 5th in her AG! For not ever really practicing and just getting out and doing it (she swims on the swim team, but doesn't really run and doesn't bike except for fun), she did an awesome job! I am so proud of my little triathlete. I want to be a cheerleader more often now :) Perfect morning. perfect.

After a rough last weekend as far as running goes for me, I'm back and little more rested and hopefully ready to go this week. I'm still debating whether or not to race AF on Saturday. If I'm doing it, I think I should just push it all out and race...but that requires tapering, which I'm not sure I want to do. But, if I don't race I'll just pace 1:45 with Kelli. Poo...I don't know.

Met at infinite cycle for Queen of the Hill ride. Because of that lady that died due to crud in the road on Redwood last week everyone is really nervous about doing Camp Williams, so we rode up 12600S to Rose Canyon/Yellow Fork, then at the bottom of the canyon (my house) we did another climb up the Cove. Finally, we got the long nice downhill back to the shop. I really try to pedal hard and not just coast on the downhill. I can't stand being a 'cheater' :) 22.5 total miles - 15.5 mph, not too fast, but 1400ft of climbing will do that to you.

Drove home and changed shoes then took my new tri jersey out for a little run. I've gotten used to running in the shorts, but needed to see how the jersey would do on a run. I figured it would be a slogging run like the past few runs, but at least the pace was decent. I was especially surprised when my first mile came in at 8:43 - that uphill first mile is usually closer to a 10! Then, it just got better from there. Besides the super lucky stop at the skate park to pee (a city worker was there and unlocked the bathrooms for me!), I had a rather uneventful run.

AP: 8:01 splits: 8:43, 7:46, 7:41, 7:49, 8:10, 8:31, 7:23 - I'm kind of proud of the pace on this run especially because I didn't feel like I was pushing it, just out for a normal ol' run. with nearly 600ft of climbing it was no easy run either. The first mile was definitely the biggest with 167ft of climb. Helps me feel like I'm going to be okay at Spudman.

The regular 10 mile loop with just George and Ronnie "Todd Newton". We had a great run and a great chat as well. At one point I was in the middle flanked by these 2 guys. I told them I felt like a rockstar out on a run with her 2 bodyguards :) Good times. I was surprised when the pace came in. I hadn't looked at my watch the entire time, just felt comfortably hard. I'm really liking my new AP :)

AP: 8:12 splits: 8:24, 7:58 (up and over temple hill), 7:57, 8:22, 8:33, 8:23 (Mavrick Hill and gentle uphill these last 3), 8:06, 8:03 (downhill fun, but the 8:03 we had to run 1/2 mileish on a dirt road and I think it slowed us a bit), 8:18 (flattens a bit), 7:57 (last push to the finish - I let George and Ronnie race it out). The garmin has my last 36 feet at 6:14...nice finish.

Came home and slept for another 2.5 hours. I was tired :)

I think I need to taper and sleep this week for AF...maybe.

Sleep, sleep glorious sleep! I finally don't feel like I'm going to fall asleep all day. Amazing what 9.5 hours will do for you :)

I was going to get up early and go bike with a group, but they decided to go at 9 when I have kids awake and no hubby. I thought I could do the spin class at 5:30 then run on the TM afterward, but when the alarm went off and I got up I decided sleep was more important. Crawled back into bed and figured I'd find a way to get to the gym in the morning...late morning.

Got a sitter to come over at 11:00

I went and did the spin bike for 60 min. Good solid push and pace, not as great as outdoor, but hey...better than nothin'! Don't you love it when you can just feel the sweat? 8-12 beads running from your hair line down your face and neck? oh yeah...love the sweat! :)

Went to the TM for a few miles to top it all off.

Urban Trail Loop with the South Valley Newtons - a force not to be reckoned with. Yes, there has been a slight name change...but I believe it to be for the better :)

I thought this would be a nice easy run for the final miles before AF Canyon. HA! I swear I didn't know we were running that fast. Oh well. Big group, lots of fun and a couple water stops along the way. Daybreak is doing construction by our fence where we hop...they better not take it away :( the big tree and fence you have to duck through are gone.

Brownies and chocolate milk afterward - an awesome perk to go along with an awesome group! Chad, George, Kimberly, Christine, Paul (in spirit today), Charles and James. Come one, come all - best loop in town!!!

HO-LY-COW! I seriously, truly, honestly didn't think I had this in me. I'm going to blame it on Chad, yup...going to blame it on him :)

Had a great day yesterday celebrating baby Fartlek's birthday (Adam, no I didn't really name him Fartlek :) ), and I guess Five Guys, movie popcorn and treats and cake and icecream are good race fuel! Or, maybe I could've run faster eating better :)

Getting up at 3:20AM is never easy, but the ride down with Kelli then the bus up with her and bye-wing was beautiful and I had no complaints. It was finally cold up at Tibble Fork! When I got off the bus, my sister drug me to the wrong side of the parking lot...I didn't know why, but whatever. Then she pointed up - they had a big movie screen type inflatable up and it was printed with pictures that had been submitted as to who we run for (this was a cancer survivor/fight race). They had used a picture my sister submitted of her and my dad with some wonderful words under it. It made me cry! What a perfect way to start out a race, thinking about my dad and how stinkin' proud he would be of me for doing what I'm doing and how he is with me at every race and on every run and always there when I need him. Being in Heaven does have its advantages :) I wore orange ribbons on my bib and in my hair for Lymphoma fighters too.

After cowering in the back of the starting line up with Kelli, I put my big girl panties on and joined Chad at the 1:30 pacing spot. I don't like being able to see the line on the ground...I like to start in the back. BUT, I knew that if I could just hold onto Chad's pace for a few miles (I'm used to clipping onto his shoulder and letting him drag me at a fast pace on runs!), that I could at least beat a 1:35 when I started to fade.

The gun went off, and yup...this is a downhill course! YIKES! SO downhill. I doubt I'll be walking well tomorrow! I was chasing then passing Peggy and Cheris from the BBK's. I had a moment, a 'remember when' moment. Very vividly I remember watching Peggy from across the track (I was doing the same 800's, but was a half or more of a lap behind!) and thinking how effortless she made running look and how I longed to someday be able to run that fast. Wow, well guess what? Now you are. CRAZY!

Mile 1-3:  (XXX?, 6:30, 6:31)

Watch lost satellite about mile .68, finally got back on track after 2nd mile, but I don't know how to figure out pace. Then, mile 2.5ish? I'd had it. It took effort and mental energy, more than I thought I'd be able to give, to keep up during mile 2. I bargained with myself to just hang in until the 5K split, then fall back. You can do this....

Mile 4-6 (6:25, 6:26, 6:38 - 10K: 41:12)

Well, before I got to that 5K mark, the downhill had picked up again and my breathing was under control. Chad was managing pace/time and I just hung on. I asked him to tell me what the 10K split was...yikes! An unofficial 10K PR by almost 2.5 minutes. Hmmm, I'll take it :) I was feeling good and enjoying the ride.

Miles 7-10 (6:52, 7:00, 7:07)

Hmmm, did the downhill stop? why yes! :) Just past mile 8 after about 1/4+ mile on the golf course flats I told Chad I was dropping back. My breathing was too hard and it was time to plug in and run my race. Cheris passed me in mile 9. I kept looking for the downhill. I was gazing far ahead, trying to see heads dropping down, but no luck. Had to tough out the flats. We finally got a nice downhill for .10 and then we hit mile 10 marker. Just a 5K left. I was at 1:08:XX...did I have a 22 min 5K in me? I honestly didn't think so.

Mile 11, 12, 13 (7:36, 7:17, 7:29, 7:00 (last .19 recorded to finish))

11 had a HUGE hill, not long, but big. I crawled up it licking my knees! ugggh, after downhill uphill is SO hard! I knew I was slowing down, but I refused to look at pace. It was run how I feel time and the best part was people weren't passing me. I was passing others. So, if people who run this time are running slower than I am it has to be a good thing! I could still see Chad ahead on the long stretches, but lost him on the last couple turns into the finish.

I was SO elated to see 1:30:XX on the clock as I came through. I'd done it! I was SO excited. Honestly, I was just happy it wasn't 1:30:01...that might have killed me after Ogden :)

The only problem I had was a nice silver dollar size blister on the ball of my L foot from about mile 3. I'm glad I didn't stop before the finish, I think I probably would've realized the amount of pain I was in and not get going again! Only gu'd once at mile 6-7ish, and never walked through an aid station. I did get pretty adept at using 2 hands though - water AND gatorade :)

At the finish line I finally took my shoes off at the aid tent - a nice silver dollar sized blister I'd been feeling since mile 3. Popped and bleeding, fun times! I've never run fast enough to get blisters before, but I love war wounds.

Kelli and I grabbed our stuff and drove up to Highland for the Wedding Bells 5K. All had finished running, but I think we got to see everyone and say hello! What an awesome thing to do on your wedding morning. Maybe I should get married again :) I also got to hold Carina's cutie pie little guy for a while. I love cuddle time! I was excited to meet Bonnie and Dean and well. We went to brunch after all the visiting was done and I had just a spectacular day!!

Just before we left for brunch, I got a text from my sister that I'd taken 1st in my AG!!! I was SO excited! A PR and 1st in my AG in a Utah County race! YIPEE!!! Chad had picked up my award, so after dropping Kelli off I went and picked up my certificate, ribbon and movie passes!! So, since I won movie passes, does that count as a cash (equivalent) prize? :)

Oh, one last point of info...this is the first race I've ever done where my AP has been in the 6's - 6:56!!! Not even a 5k or 10K in the 6's. Yes, I love downhill :)

Legs still sore and cussing me when I walk, so I decided to play it safe and not run. I want to, but I think I might just do too much damage if I run. Darn recovery. Another low mileage week I guess.

Got up early (despite wanting to sleep) to meet some friends for a bike ride. Well, they'd said the wrong meeting place, but when I got back home and looked on FB I figured it out. They were climbing Rose Canyon though, so I figured I'd just bike from home and meet them. They were right at the end of my street when I got there - perfect. Then on the way back I'd said I was going to cut through the neighborhood and grab my water. Due to traffic they couldn't turn when I did, then lost me and waited, but waited at the wrong spot. So, I was chasing them while they were waiting for me. Finally at a point along Bacchus when I could see a good stretch I knew they weren't in front of me. I waited and saw them coming behind. So, I totally ditched them. What a crazy ride! Anyway, then we finished at Herriman HS and all went our separate ways home. I did a big loop home and finished with 21.0 miles. No pace, because I stopped the watch and forgot to start it, so I was about 7 miles behind that on my garmin. poo. Oh well. At least my legs feel functional now.

Heaven Help Me. I probably shouldn't have run this, but well I did. My legs are still sore and fatigued and my legs gave me the proverbial finger when I started running! I did loosen up a bit, but overall - ugghhh, it was a mental test for sure.

I'd told the other Newtons there this morning that I was finally going to get to see my old friends - the 9mm paces - again today. They tried their darndest to make sure that didn't happen. The closest I got was 8:56. I was still WAAAAY behind everyone in the group. Dang Newtons. They're like gravity (hence the name) - always pulling you just a little bit faster. I can't wait until I reach terminal velocity! :)

There was, however, always one of them that was willing to slog along in the back with me. I was grateful for the company, but wasn't good company myself. Too much cardio effort to really chat much. I just wanted it done after about mile 3.

AP: 8:34; splits 8:56, 8:31, 8:33, 8:40, 8:55, 8:46, 8:26, 8:10, 8:26, 8:18

I think tomorrow...I'll bike.

Holy Hannah! Seriously, I don't know what possessed me to do this, but I did it. One down...a lifetime to go. I rode Suncrest. Not just once. A double traverse.

A group of riders sent out an invite to ride from Riverton to Suncrest (up the Draper side) then over to Alpine/Lehi, turn and go back. I thought it would be a good alternative for a killer workout since my legs aren't liking me running on them lately.

I was done by the time we got to the Chevron at the BOTTOM of Suncrest. But, I do what I set out to do...so I plugged along. You can't stop pedaling. Nope. You will die and never be able to start again. So, the only option was to keep going. I've run suncrest before and honestly I wanted to get off the stupid bike and just run it up...it would probably have been faster!! But...I couldn't stop :)

When I finally got to the top I wanted to yell out like an amazon, but I refrained - and did it inside :) Then, we went down the backside. Oh yeah...easy ride! The bottom came too quickly. At Timp Highway we turned and went back up. It was then I'd decided I didn't want to go down the back side and back up, but just the one ascent was good. Darn. Too little too late. The Alpine side was manageable and I could actually talk a little on the way up. Maybe I was warmed up too, but it wasn't nearly as bad as the Draper side!!! The last hill climb to the top was the worst. I just wanted it done. Then, we got the free ride down. Wheeee!

We went back a different way...down 14600S to 1300W, up the S curve then back to the cars. 30 miles. The longest I've ever ridden! My bike butt will be sore tomorrow :) Good thing I'm only running!!! I'm really excited that I was able to tackle this and just get it done. Now I feel like I can do anything! I may be slow, but hey...I get it done.

Legs actually feel better now and I almost want to go run :) too bad I have to work. Running will wait until tomorrow.

I'm getting some killer miles in this week...whatever. I guess it is all in the name of recovery, but the numbers sometimes get to me. I'm still feeling tired legs, not much soreness, but the ride yesterday probably didn't help the tired legs issue. I also have a couple little aches that aren't resolving how I'd like them to, so more rest (sleep) and less muscle/impact on the legs = swimming tomorrow.

Met the Newtons for our Urban Trail Loop. We had a good little crowd there and had a good time discussing the benefits and drawbacks to the new Obesity medication that was just FDA approved. On NPR on the way home they said "diet and exercise aren't effective." What the...what?!? man alive...anyway, back to running.

I forgot to switch the garmin from biking mode after yesterday, so this run was a 'bike' on the garmin. Thus, no splits - just an AP, which kind of bums me out. I really think I had some 9's in there this morning!! Now, I don't get to see them :) But, I enjoyed my time the last couple miles just running with Christine and getting to know her better. I let the boys duke it out for the win today.

This week is more like RADswimming and RADbiking :) So, since my calf wasn't too happy yesterday the last couple miles I decided to be nice. I haven't hit the pool like I should, but figured it was no big deal. So, since I had a free day and hubby home (we're jetting off for camping here quickly) I thought I'd go and swim.

I did some math a figured out the IM swim is 3.86KM or 4221.3 yds. Since all our pools are yd pools I needed to figure out how many yds I'd be swimming at the half IM in August....I wanted to do a timed test swim (no stopping!). So, 1/2 of 4221.3 is 2110.65, then it is easier for me to keep track in touches (25yds, not a full lap - just a length), so divide that by 25 and I got 84.4 'touches'. Ahhh, perfect. I'll do 85 and call it good.

I started out at the pool and the first 20 flew by. BUT, by 40 my goggles were hurting my head SO bad I had a headache and felt like my head was going to implode. I needed to fix them. In order to simulate my IM swim I didn't 'stop' time or swimming, but in the deep end I took my goggles off, and dog paddled to the other end (no touching the bottom! I'm in the middle of the lake :) ) - still moving. I did this back as well to give my head a little extra break, then got back at it.

Just before 60 they pulled the lap lanes. Crap, crap, crappy crap. I ended up stopping at 60 and having to walk over to the other side of the pool to swim the 'short' way. I asked the guard and he said it was 22yds not 25. poo. So, I watched time and it was one minute exactly before I got swimming again. As I swam I figured out I'd need to do 3 laps and 9 yds extra to make up for the shorter distance. Well, I had 1/2 a 'touch' I'd added on, so I could throw the 9yds into that 1/2 a touch and just add 3 more. Poo. 88 now instead of 85. I was getting tired.

My face and  hurt, my throat was dry (too much breathing out no water in) and I wanted to throw up. I was SO done. I just kept thinking of feeling like that in the middle of the lake with no where to stop...had to carry on. I did do one more goggle rest/dog paddle lap as well (around 70). Then, the last 8 touches I could finally see the light and I picked up speed to just get done! Best 300 EVER! :) When I finished I was at 45:30, so taking away the minute for the detour I did 44:30 - almost exactly the 45 min I'd predicted. Now, to move up from that!

Things I learned in the pool today - I need new goggles. Ones that don't hurt my head. Secondly, I need more endurance work in the pool. I can get through 1/2 the swim no problem, but around the 2/3rds mark I really struggle. The end is always better, because it is the end. But, I need to get more used to swimming without stopping and breaks.

Very wonderful, educational day in the pool. No running workout by any means, but a day when you learn and grow in any sport is a good day!

Oh, and as a side note...this half IM isn't going to be as 'easy' as I thought! People that complete full IMs....holy whoa, they are awesome!

Ever have a destination run? Somewhere you've always thought would be awesome to run? Well, the first time I remember going to Logan (just a few years ago - when I was a wee baby runner) I passed Mantua lake and thought "Man! I'd love to live here and wake up and run around that lake every morning. It is just gorgeous up here!"

Every year we go on a campout with my hubby's family and this year we were at Box Elder CG - just about a mile away from Mantua Lake (reservoir). I wasn't going to miss this for all the fire in the world...oh wait, I almost did! :) I'd figured out the lake was 4 miles around on map my run - and that there was a nice running path around the lake, bonus! It looked a little tricky to get there from the campground, but figured I'm not directionally challenged and had 11 miles to burn to get there for at least ONE loop around.

As we left about 3PM Friday afternoon we saw the first wisps of smoke from the fire. As we drove away (stopping a couple places on the way out of town) the sheer numbers of fire crews passing us and the billowing smoke was enough to start calling neighbors and getting on Herriman city's FB page. When we got to the campground I was about ready to turn around and go home, the evacuation area was 2 blocks West - but extended past us Northward. I live at the end of a dead end street...where there is a nice dry field, connected to the evac areas. If the fire jumped Rose Canyon Rd and headed North we'd be right next to the fire, because that field would be gone in a matter of seconds. This freaked me out the most. Thankfully, calls and texts from neighbors kept me dealing with things and some logical reasoning from my husband and some peaceful prayer helped calm me down and we decided to stay put. This didn't stop me from being glued to hubby's phone on FB all night (frustrating, because I couldn't see all MY friends stuff and comment, but still at least able to see news and city reports). The last call I got was around 9PM and my neighbor told me it looked like it had settled and she was no longer worried at all...and it all had stayed South. The only problem was, that by this time they'd thrown our neighborhood into the evac area. Well, we didn't have to leave, but if you left you weren't allowed back into the neighborhood. Some friends who were working or had hubbies working late got 'locked out' of the 'hood and couldn't get home. I think they did this more for crowd control than anything. If you know your way around you can sneak through my 'hood to the evac zones and to good views of the fire, so closing down the neighborhood just helped the emergency crews keep the people out that shouldn't be there and roads open for them to use more quickly. All this info really helped me sleep with peace of mind that all was going to be okay.

What didn't help me sleep was that 2/4 kids went to bed saying they felt like they were going to barf. Dumb camping treats! My kids aren't used to free for all junk food tables, they don't handle their sugar well :) So, any sound they made I woke up afraid they were going to barf in Paul's tent! (Prlman loaned us a tent big enough for the family! Thanks Paul!) Luckily, after 5.5 long hours of 'sleep' no one had barfed and I got up and ready for my epic lake run!

I made my way straight there, no detours or back tracking - booyah! Beautiful little dirt path to follow around, peaceful fishermen on the shore and I got to see the first light on the lake from the East side of the lake. Then, due to being close to the mtns I got to watch the sun rise....4 or 5 times on my 2nd loop of the lake. The last loop I went the opposite direction and my SIL that was with her family fishing, hoped on her bike and rode while I ran. Great company! But, it was getting hot, I was out of water and I hadn't eaten. The last few miles felt like a death march. I'm so glad I had Annette there so that my pride wouldn't let me quit! :)

AP: 8:50 (not bad for a nice little meandering 15 miles! - oh, and flat...SO flat!)

When I got back to camp my Father in Law got my breakfast ready for me and I had bacon, french toast, milk and orange juice. What a way to do it right! I'd missed all the food prep drama (and work) and gotten a great run in and waited on at breakfast, and ate in peace since kids had already eaten! Score a win for mom!!!

The rest of camp was pretty uneventful, until around 10ish when we saw the news that our neighborhood was out of 'lock down' and we would be able to get home! YAY! We also took our youngest 2 on a walk and found a little beach next to the creek that ran through camp. I waded in and sat on a log and let my legs get a bit of an ice bath...awesome!

We packed up and headed home. Bellies full of junk, bodies caked in dirt, skin all bitten by mosquitoes (oh, they were bad! my poor daughter went to the doc today (sunday) due to swollen ankles that hurt to walk on from them!), and a full 24 hrs of fun in the out of doors! Oh, and I got to check off an epic run from my bucket list.

Mantua Lake - awesome run! try it sometime.
