Race Reflections:
- This was my first race since my hamstring injury in November 2016. I was completely winded throughout the race. From the moment I began running, I felt awful (slow, weighted down, sore). Mentally, it was a battle with my thoughts to finish especially the final 1/2 mile. My pace really slowed.
- I have a long road ahead of me to gain stamina and speed back.

- Since the left inside of my knee is still bothersome, I thought that I would try running on the treadmill. It was beyond awful in the mental department.
- My knee hurt with the first few strides so I stopped. I put on my knee wrap and was good to go.
- I went slow at first then gradually increased the speed.
- I needed more fluids. I should have hopped off the treadmill and grabbed a drink from the fountain. At mile 17, I just wanted to be done. I knew if I got off, I would never finish the distance.

- I am back from a 10 day vacation. My running was a mess. I had not planned on 15 inches of snow and no treadmill. On the days where the temperatures melted the roadways adequately for pedestrian safety, I tried to accumulate high mileage.
- My goal today was to run 18 miles. I fell short both physically and mentally.
- I managed to complete 16 miles just under the 2:40:00 goal.
- Tomorrow is a new day. Sometimes that is as good as it gets.

- Today's focus was to concentrate on nutrition and running the first part of my run slower than the second part. I succeeded with both goals.
- I picked up my pace at mile 16. I still had a lot of energy if I had chosen to run more miles.
- Next week, I will increase my speed for the first part of my run to hover around 9:50. With this faster pace, I'll have a clearer idea as to how much I can realistically push my pace and at what mile that increase should begin.
- There is no way that I would have finished 26.2 miles under 4:00:10 today with my slow pace at the start.
- My final 4 miles were at a pace of 9:38.

Take Aways:
- Even though I bonked on mile 21, my overall pace improved from last week (10:00 last week to 9:40 this week). Plus, I ran an additional 2 miles this week.
- Here are my 5 mile splits: 5 miles - 9:49 / 10 miles - 9:49 / 15 miles - 9:51 / 20 miles - 9:45 / 22.02 - 8:30
- I'd like to see what my pace for a long run is like on a flat course, but it is probably best that I stick with this hilly course. Pushing myself now on the hills hopefully works to my advantage on race day since the course is flat. My fingers are crossed that I won't be physically spent on the final 6 miles of race day. One can always dream!

Observations:
- Realized after 2 miles, I was running too fast - Although I was happy with that pace. I am typically a slow starter. That pace felt easy, breezey!
- Began to purposefully slow my pace
- Around mile 6, I realized that it was a lot of hard work to slow my pace to 10:00. I decided to just run and let my pace drop to a natural flow. It appears that somewhere between 9:30 and 9:35 is my sweet spot.

- I really felt the heat when I started running at 5:15 AM. Also, my toes and the tops of my feet hurt for the first few miles. I had to mentally focus on other thoughts otherwise I would not have finished my run.
- I had hoped that by going back to the Brooks brand of shoes this foot problem would go away. It may just take some time. I know that the shoes are wider than my Saucony's.

Race Day Experience:
- In typical fashion, I had technology problems. Why and how this happens is a mystery to me. It must be nerves. At my next race, I am NOT going to do a technology pre-check. Somewhere during this ritual, I mess up my programs and then everything goes south from there.
- I had zero music during the half-marathon. After the first mile of trying to run and fix my technology, I pulled out my earbuds. I stuffed them in my running belt and turned up my pace.
- Those first 3 miles were a mental mess! I always run with music so it was a battle of the wills to continue rather than give up.
- I found a guy that appeared to have a steady pace. I chose to let him be my pacer. At mile 10, he fell back. I pressed on knowing that he would most likely resurge toward the final mile.
- At mile 12.5, he caught back up with me. We brought ourselves across the finish line close to the same time. We thanked each other profusely.
After Thoughts:
- I will not pretend that running without music was okay. I had no idea how noisy runners are - heavy breathing, feet pounding, mouths spitting, throats clearing - during a race. It was pretty disgusting, but I'll admit that race cacophony drove me to push through each mile with determination and focus.
- There were no timing clocks along the way so I had zero knowledge of my pace until mile 13. I saw the clock at 1:57:??! I was elated! Unfortunately, my official time was disappointing! It is incredible to me how many seconds it takes to complete a tenth of a mile. I practice, practice, practice this tenth of a mile consistently. It still conquers me every race day!

- By the time I finished the race, temperatures had spiked (86°). I could barely stay hydrated. Grateful that I brought along both water bottles to help with the later miles so that I wouldn't have to make stops.
- Even though I won my age group, I took zero pleasure with that fact. Completing a half marathon in over 2 hours is beyond disappointing.

- I set out to run 22 miles. I am running in PA at my daughter's home. It was more humid than I expected. I also did not know the area so I was not very adventurous. Boredom set in quickly. I also finished my hydration sooner than anticipated.
- I thought that at mile 14, I would run to her house and refill my bottles. Unfortunately, I spent the next two miles being lost. i kept making a circular loop, but could not figured out how to locate her street.
- I finally had to stop and call her from work. By this time, I had a long delay. I was two blocks from her home. My legs were done. I was dehydrated. I called it quits for a 22 mile run.

- I was happy getting 20 miles in this morning. I am still in PA so running in an unknown area is tricky to navigate.
- I had a lot of stops and starts throughout the 20 miles. I had to gather my bearings, refuel my hydration, and confirm my flight assignment. My legs did not respond well to this, but I managed to push through any way.
- I won a $100 gift card at my last race. I need to invest in a new air of shoes. The Brooks Ghost 9 are just not working for me. My feet constantly hurt.

- My new shoes did a good job addressing the narrowness of the Ghost 9's on my toes. I still feel a lot of hard strikes with my heel. I feel that I need more cushioning at the heel.

- This was a marathon race, but I bonked much to my dismay.
- How could my Garmin show an entire extra mile? I tried to stay in the center of the road to prevent weaving and added mileage. Clearly, this was an epic fail!
- The weather conditions were perfect for the majority of participants. For me, it was uncomfortably cold. I dressed appropriately, but did not fuel or hydrate because I was not sweating. I developed leg cramps at mile 20. I stretched, walked, fueled. Unfortunately, I experinced little to no relief. My pace slowed significantly.
- My hopes of negative splits did not occur.

Thoughts:
- I experienced no foot pain while running this morning. Swtiching back to my Brooks seems to have corrected whatever was happening with the different brand of shoes.
- Trying to keep my pace according to this running plan takes a lot of concentration. My garmin talks to me at half mile splits so I can adjust accordingly by the time I run each mile. Perhaps, with time, pacing will feel more natural.

Thoughts:
- I am disappointed with my overall finish time and average pace. I just don't understand why I can not run under 2 hours.
- The course was very hilly, but I felt as if I maintained my pace well through those parts of the race.
- At the first mile, the police officer directed us to a wrong turn. I, and other runners, ran an extra 1/2 mile in total due to his error. I don't really think that this affected my overall time too much except that perhaps I overcompensated and ran too fast at first to make up the distance in order to get back on track.
- I really need to think through my training and decide if I want to just run or if I want to run to race faster. I am really at a crossroad. I'm pretty discouraged because whatever I try just does not seem to work.

- I have three running plans vying for my decision to follow. Currently, my mind is a jumbled mess. What I have been using did not get me where I wanted to be ultimately. I am finding it difficult, however, to try something new.
- This week I am to do a recovery workout. I am forcing myself to make a final decision at the end of the week because I will have tried a week of training with each plan.

- I walked for 3 miles. I thought that I was going insane.
- I am trying very hard to follow this new plan with fidelity. I know that I need to rest, but this felt beyond crazy. I was also getting shin splints with the walking.
- I ran slowly for the remaining 3 miles. This made more sense.

Thoughts:
- Finally finished near my marathon pace. I still need to figure out how to run with my target pace steadily. I either slow down too much or speed up too much.
- Today I turned on the "coach" feature to talk to me every two minutes. While this certainly helped, I found that the coach told me "Good job" when I was either 20 seconds too fast or too slow within my race pace. this feels like a wide range especially when the goal is to run a marathon.

- I had hoped to finish with an overall pace of 10:15. I felt strong so I was a little surprised to see my pace slow so much during miles 9 - 12.
- I am still trying to figure out the coach feature on my Garmin app. I felt as if the coach was constantly telling me to slow my pace. Perhaps I should not have the coach talk to me every two minutes. I can try it at every five minutes and see if there is any kind of difference with my performance.

Thoughts:
- According to the book (Simple Marathon Training), I need to run MUCH, MUCH faster on the treadmill. I am unclear as to why the treadmill pace does not better match up to the table in the book. I ran on the treadmill at a pace of 8:34. It took 4:20 minutes to run 800m. According to the book that would mean that my pace was 10:15. That is a huge discrepancy. Today's workout/calculations appear to be an epic fail.

Thoughts:
- I was hoping for an overall pace closer to 10:20. I wore three layers of clothes. I felt very weighted down.
- At mile 10, I changed my running shirts. I was very wet and cold. I didn't think that I'd be able to complete the final 4 miles if I continued feeling so cold. It was a smart decision.
- My quadriceps are sore from the increased cycling and squat workouts. I should become more acclimated to the new workouts in a few weeks.
