I want to address the issue of sidewalk running. In my neighborhood, all the members of the millennial generation and gen z run exclusively on the sidewalks, never on the roads. All of the older runners, like myself, run on the roads as we always have. These sidewalk runners seem to expect me to move out into the road when I am walking my dog because they never yield.

What's up with this?

Enlighten them that the roads are softer and more forgiving to their pounding than the sidewalks!

Their knees and hips will inform them soon as will the abrasions from tripping over your leash.

I should have asked if anyone else has observed this phenomenon. Or is it a Salt Lake thing?

I've always assumed sidewalk runners are inexperienced and unaware that roads are better to run on.

Most people in my neighborhood run on the road, I did see the local hs xc kids running on the sidewalk recently and found that to be strange.

When I started out I ran sidewalks as well, but always moved over for people, except cyclists (haha). Now I like the road because my form gets sloppy as I tire and I've tripped on uneven sidewalks in the past. Depends on the road though. Some sections are a death wish so sidewalks are the smart option.

I see most of the youth runners around here going on the sidewalks, though that is partly because the roads are often busy with no extra room. I encourage my daughters and my runners to run on blacktop over cement, but am surprised how many just don't care. I'd much rather run on the road through random neighborhoods than the sidewalk along some busy road with endless cars and polution.
