Had a great run with some great friends today, 16.2 miles in 2:19:33 at 8:37 pace. Started out at 8:41 pace for the first 12 miles and then kept ramping up from there to 8:34--8:27--8:20-- and an 8:13 for the last 1.2 miles. I felt good, no soreness or problem areas, nice run to open up 2011.
Now a day of rest and relaxing |
| | 8 miles in 1:08:00, no issues body wise, actually felt real good today after the 16.2 run yesterday. |
| |
AM 7 mile easy run this morning, 1 mile warm up and 6 miles at an easy 8:57 pace. Hard to get into the run at first but got alittle better as it went on.
PM Well, 7 miles around the Greenbelt-- my first run in outside this afternoon. 4 above and i just needed to get off that TM and get a run in outside and i am so glad it did, yes it was cold as heck but the sun was shinning and it did not feel that cold until mile 6 and the sweat was starting to make me just a little cold. Pace was around 8:40 to 9:15 as some of the path was slick and some wasn't, Had a great time!!!! |
| |
AM 5 mile tm run, scaled back a few miles this morning and wanted to get alittle more stretching in this morning. Was nice talking to Jeff this morning while running as he is in his taper runs now. Best of luck on RnR Phx. Jeff
PM Speed workout this afternoon, 6.60 miles, 2 mile warm up and a 20 min. tempo run at a pace of 7:41 and HR at 145, and a 2 mile cool down.
| | AM Talk about the bad and good in a 1 hour run, the first 3.5 miles was not that easy this morning, started out sluggish and pace was up and down from 8:34 to 8:57 and really had a hard time vetting into it. And just after the 3.5 miles i was things got better and was back into the run and actually set the pace at 8:27 for the next mile and 8:20 for the neext and 8:13 the next and7:56 for the last .13 miles. Glad i just hung in there and didn't throw in the towel. PM
PM 5.50 miles around the greenbelt, made 1 loop and on the 2nd loop i turned and went up to Pickett's Bambino and back and finished up the rest of the 2nd loop.
| |
AM Got to the gym early because i nedded to get to work before 6am, started out at 8:41 pace for 30 min. and 8:27 pace for the last half with an 8 min. pace the last mile.
PM Speed workout this afternoon, 1.50 warm up, 6 x 1/4 mile intervals a 6:54 pace, 1/4 mile recovery and 1.75 mile cool down for total of 5.50 miles.

| |
16 miles in 2:23:54, 9:00 min. pace. Long slow miles this morning, 30 sec. below my MP and at HR of 139 for 14.5 miles and then went up to 142 for the last 1.5 miles due to i ran out of water and i did not want to stop when i was that close to being done.
I am thinking of changing my work outs around just a little due to not being able to get stretching in the way i need to, and the lack of not getting core workouts in also, along with some weight training. I need to have these things incorportated into my marathon training.
| |
AM 1 hour--6.60 miles @ 0.05% incline--30 sec. below goal MP and at a 138 HR I was a nice and easy aerobic training run as i am starting to work more with HR zones PM Hit the gym this afternoon for weight training and core workouts and stretching, felt so good to get the in this evenning.
| |
| | AM Speed workout 6x600 intervals with 200 cooldown. 1:15 min -- 8.83 miles, did a 10 min warmup--8:00 @ 144 HR -- 7:13 @ 154 HR -- 7:13 @ 154 HR -- 7:13 @ 155 HR -- 7:13 @ 156 HR -- 6:53 @ 159 HR and the rest of the miles just below MP at 141-142 HR PM | |
| | Easy run this morning, no incline, and HR at 129 and had enough time to get in 300 setups in this morning. It was a cool run this morning because i was able to run with my wifeand talk to her as we were both doing an easy run. | |
| | 10.05 miles in 1:30, 45 min at an easy 9:13 pace (136), 40 min at MP 8:41 (142), with a 0.05% incline for the whole run. I am thinking of changing my MP to 8:35 or 8:30 pace as my HR indicates that i am able to just alittle, looking for a 145 or 146 HR. 300 setups also | |
| |
Easy 6.65 miles in 1 hour with a 0.05% incline and HR of 134. Long run Sat. want to run it out side but the weather is not looking like it will be that nice. We will see |
| |
20.0 mile tm run, ok it was not as bad as as it sounds it was actually not to bad of run, the first 10 miles i had a 0.05% incline (134-135) the next 8.5 miles i was going up and down with the incline (135) and the last 1.5 miles was at MP. My wife should up around mile 10.5 and we kept each other company as she ran 15 miles this morning--good job honey! |

| |

easy run this afternoon, 8.46 miles in 1:15--Avg HR at 138-- and pace of 8:52,
This morning i went to the gym and bid 400 setups, leg weights, and stretched. |
| |
No run today as Mauri and I are going to Salt Lake City for a VO2 max test tomorrow
| |
We drove down to SLC for a VO2 test at the Treehouse Athletic Club, Very well worth the money and found out alot about my HR range. One thing that i got out of it was that i am able to pick up the pace some and will still be in the mid aerobic zone, and have been running my long at the low end of aerobic zone. |
| | Mauri and I ran in SLC around Liberty Park today, what a very nice park to run in. Didn't have gel or any real fuel or hydration other then H2O so i knew the late miles were going to be harder. Got to the park around 9:30 temp was 41* miles 1-13 held a steady pace of 8:30 to 8:40, 14-16 was alittle slower due to low fuel and hydro. We had a great time and nice to run in some good weather and no snow. |
| | 9 miles in 1:19:20, Had a real good run this afternoon- started out at Igg's and ran up to Broadway and across and back down to Pancheri and around SRL and the park 2 times. It was just an easy run with a pace around 8:30 to 8:45 and HR never got above 136, maybe should have pushed it alittle more but am doing speedwork tomorrow. a little cool out--20* but was not bad. |
| |
Speed workout this afternoon, 1 mile W/U and then 4 x 1200 w/400 cooldown 6:44 (141), 6:44 (150), 6:40 (157), 6:35 (157), and went into a 50 min. run at an 8:27 pace with HR at (142). This was one of my best runs (workouts) even tho it was on a TM 10.88 miles in 1:30 min |
| | 8.45 miles in 1:16:38, just an easy run around SRL and across to S. Park. Path was clear on the east side and spots on the west side but not to bad at all. Legs were just a little tired from the speed workout yesterday. HR at 134 for the whole run. |
| |
10.18 miles in 1:30:00, 25 min. w/u - 2.77 miles at a pace of 9:07 (127), 60 min. MP - 6.93 miles at a pace of 8:37 (142), 5 min. cooldown (134). Broadway to Sunnyside loop twice, pathway were clear except on the SRL side and i just ended up running on the road on that part. And then a nice cup of coffee from Starbucks afterwards. |
| | 6 easy miles on the country roads around our house, 54 min |
| | 20 miles around the Snake from Broadway to Sunnyside, about 2 1/2 miles into the run into Jeff F. as i have been wanting to meet him as i know we have crossed paths many times. (It was nice to meet you finally Jeff!!) Started out the run wanting to do 35 to 40 sec. slower then MP, the first two loops were 30 sec. slower and the last two loops were 40 sec slower, i kind of got frustrated the last two loops because i had to slow down some but what do you expect with no taper after doing 8's and 10's all week long. so i am happy with it. Time of 3:04:02 now i am celebrating with two ice bags and a big glass of red wine!!!!!!!! | |
| |
8.54 miles in 1:15:00 with an incline of 0.05% on the TM at the gym, just didn't want to get all the cold running gear on this afternoon and might be inside for a few days because of the cold conditions this week, high of 7* tomorrow. It was just an easy run with HR of 133 except for the last 0.5 mile at an 8:27 pace then HR went up to 138. |
| |
4 x 1600 w/400 jog speed workout with an incline of 0.05% 1.25 mile w/u 6:49 (154) - 6:49 (157) - 6:58 (157) - 6:58 (157) then went into 8:27 pace (142) for 3.17 miles, 1:15 min. Wow what a workout. |

Woke up race morning to rain, and was not sure what to expect for the race or if it was going to be a run just to finish. We left the hotel around 5:30 am and had a 10 to 15 min drive to the start line and then another 1 mile walk just to get to the start line as they blocked off all roads. It was still rainning as we were walking to the start and my wife Mauri, sister-in-law Karey, and brother-in-law Larry wanted to see me start and stood out in the rain with me the whole time and was glad i had extra coats and jackets for them.
More and more runners were showing up now and getting close to race time and it was still rainning and i decided that i was going to make the most of this run and that it was not that bad a it was 53* and warm out so the rain (not heavy rain) was not going to bother me and in fact during the run it did not bother me and kept me cool.

8 - 8:23 (136)
9 - 8:24 (136)

Set out at 5 am this morning, made 2 loops around the greenbelt and then up SRL and then down Sunnyside to Hitt road and up Hitt to 17th street and and back the same way. Ran into Jeff and Moxie at mile 10, it is always nice talking to him.
Set out on this run to see if an 8:00 min mile was possible and still stay in the Z2 HR (137-147), 20 miles in 2:39:50 at 7:59 over all pace, with an average HR of 144. At mile 10 pace was 8:07 and the last 10 was at 7:52 pace, had to work at it and focus on the breathing the last few miles. Need to keep working at it, and the hydration was not very well planned out on this run.
| |
9.25 miles around the Greenbelt 4 times, very windy and i could complain about it but you know as i was running into the head wind i was just telling myself it is a great training run and i was running in shorts and a long-sleeve tech tee so it is all good.

4 loops around the Greenbelt for 9.15 miles in 1:17,10
| |
20 miles in 2:46:40 for an overall pace of 8:20
Ok i did a very boring run this morning but it was needed in a good way, i ran SRL up and back for 20 miles, i ran the hills and down hills as my next marathon has some of both in it. I was holding a good pace around an 7:50 to 8:10 pace up to mile 18 and i know it was going to happen some time during the run where my legs are going to say they have had enough of that crap, and they did. The last 2 miles i was just in a finish the run pace.
I feel very blessed this morning as i seen alot of my friends on this run and am very happy to have them friends and fellow runners. Jeff S. thanks for all the words of encouragement, your awesome!!
After the run i went to the new running store and got a massage and talked with Gray as he is having his grand openning today, aqnd picked up some hammer stuff, and was talking to him about the bibs he has on the wall and told him about one of mine that Ryan Hall, and Meb had signed and i think i will bring it in to the store to show off as it is just in the dresser and i know he will take good care of it, as he also has alot of memorabilia on his walls at the store and he seemed happy to have me bring it in.
| | 9.26 miles in 1:15, just a take it easy run |
| |
Speed workout, 10 miles in 1:15:30 for an average pace of 7:33

| |
Easy run this afternoon around the Greenbelt but it was very windy. |
| |
Abs are a little sore today as i have been working them more this week.
Tempo run today at the gym, i am sick of the wind and looking forward to next weeks nice weather. 11.73 miles in 1:30:00 15 min. at 8:13 to an 8:00 min mile, and 75 min at 7:35 pace. |
| | 7.50 easy miles on the TM this afternoon, |
| |
Todays run i decided to slow the long run down alittle bit by 30 to 45 seconds slower then goal MP and it was hard to do,as i kept wanting to pick up the pace and had to hold back. It kept going through my mind the quote that Ryan Hall said once was (it takes self discipline to run slower) and it helped. 16 miles in 2:18:10 at a pace of 8:38 and average HR of 131.
I set out to run this run between an 8:30 and an 8:40 and i actally feel good right now and not sore. I am also going to try to do 2 a day only on my recovery run days to break it up and to reduce the fitigue and hope to have better Speedwork and tempo runs. |

| Race: |
Coeur d' Alene Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:26:22, Place overall: 40, Place in age division: 5
We got to Coeur d' Alene on Thursday around noon, and I was feeling like I was getting a sore throat and picked up some Zicam and was taking it the whole time up here until the race. It helped out alot. My calf's had been on the tender side since we left Idaho Falls. We drove the course on Sat. evening and was amazed with the rolling hills and a couple big hills. I did not train that much for hills and all the turns that was on this course, but it is a very scenic and an awesome city to visit.
Ran a 3:26:22 marathon at average pace of 7:55, finished 5th out of 25 in my age group and 40th out of around 600, (not sure of exact # yet as we left before all the finishes were posted.
I didn't know how I was going to run this course and was going to just get going and see what happens. It didn't take long to figure out how I was going to run this one right away, as on the flats I was going to just hold a 7:50 to 8:00 min. mile and on the up hills just to run in the means of HR in Z2, and make up for it on the down hills. It ended up that the flats were just alittle faster then 7:50 sometimes, but HR was still ok. So it did not bother me to much and was hoping I was not going to pay at the end. At mile 21 I was at a low end of Z3 and by mile 24 I was at the middle of Z3 but was not going to slow down at this point and was not hurting or felt bad until mile 25 and just kept doing what I was able. Wow I BOSTON QUALIFIED and I am so happy, and to do it on a course that was a challange.
Glory to God for giving me the strength and the will to do what I love to do.

Alot of people and talked with Jeff and Gray before and after the race as those two guys are fast. Ended getting 1st in my age group, very happy about that and might end up doing more 5k now.
After the race i set out on a 6.80 mile run to end the day of running at 10. Now let the fun begin, Happy 4th

Deseret News Marathon (26.2 Miles) 03:31:01, Place overall: 60, Place in age division: 10
This was a much harder course then i thought it was going to be. Race got started and we were heading down this steep hill from 7500 feet elevation, felt like my pace was just alittle fast but if i slowed it felt like i was holding back so i just kept going with it 6:40ish pace for the fist 4 miles. We got to the bottom of that hill and my HR was high and thought it might be from the elevation. Started up the 1.5 mile hill and just wanted to hold a nice even pace and not to spend alot of energy going up it. I got to the top and and wanted my HR to come down so i slowed the pace down some and it was just not going down so i just kept going with what felt right. Was running 7:10 - 7:15 min miles on the way down and was getting closer to the bottom of the hill and my HR was comming down some but by this time i have already been running in Z3 for the last 16 miles. Got to the zoo and started a slight up hill run and could feel some discomfort in my legs and around mile 17 i stopped quickly to rub some winter crest on my legs before they got bad and got going again. Turned another corner and was heading up another hill and saw a phone in a zip lock bag in the middle of the road and ran by it and felt very compelled to turn around and get it andget it back to its owner and doubled back to get. Got going again and was running ok still but felt the legs getting heavy with every mile and every hill was starting to take a toll. Mile 24 things were hard and pace was off and just fighting to keep a 8:45 pace and by mile 25 just teying to keep a 10 min pace. Got to the finish line and seen my wife standing the and felt much better then, (she is such a great wife and an amazing person) I had a fun time running this course and very happy with my time. Got back to the Horel and got the phone back to its owner and they were so thankful and made me feel very good. 3:31:01 60 overall 10 in age group

AM 10.25 miles on a cool but amazing morning for a run, I had alot of fun on this run this morning as i ran two loops of the Greenbelt and Freeman Park. 1 mile w/u - 6.75 miles at low Z2 - 1.50 miles at goal MP - 1 mile c/d.
I was coming out of Freeman Park on the second loop and saw four guys running 1/3 of a mile ahead of me and knowing they were in the late 20's early 30's it gave me some fun to try and catch them. So I went into goal MP and passed the just as we got to John's Hole Bridge. I know they didn't like seeing the OLD GUY passing them, they didn't even say hi back to me (yes Jeff rude runners HaHa) Well I maybe didn't have to do that but it was fun.
The niice thing about it was that the HR only went to the mid Z2 and I felt great. Just finished up my run and my wife Mauri was just getting there for her run.

First of all I want to thank GOD for giving me the strength to run!!
Got to the start line and forgot to turn on my garmin in time for the satellite to pick up before crossing the start line and waited to start it at mile 1, O well just had to add a mile but for my time I was not sure of the first mile split. I ended up running with the 3:20 pacer and for the first few miles we were running 7:40 pace down hill and then turned into 7:20 pace at mile 3 and held that pace all the way down the hill.
Got to the bottom of the hill and was thinking that the pacer would fall back to a 7:35 or 7:38 pace and we just kept going at 7:20 but now started to walk for a few seconds through the aid stations, I was feeling good and HR was low still. As we got outside of Inkom we were hitting some hills and HR was going up some what but not bad and was running 7:30 to 7:38 splits now and it still was manageable. Got to the top of the hill and looked back to see how many people was in the group still and it was just the pacer, myself, and two female runners left. I got to mile 20 just before the hill going up to Century High School and had started to get a cramp in my right hamstring and slowed down and just taking it easy going up the hill and not forcing any kind of pace and just wanted to make it to the top of the hill and go from there. Got to the top and the cramp was gone, (I could not believe it - so happy) but was not running with a group any more but could see them ahead of me.
I started back into a 7:30 ish pace and was not slowing at the aid stations and just grabbed water and kept going. And caught back up to the group I was running with around mile 23, and now the pacer just stopped and it was myself and the two girls I was running with the whole time were together. This was so much fun now as the three of us had some great energy and were feeding of of it. and rolled to the finish some what all together.
I had so much fun today at this race and meet all my expectations, and it is so nice to get to the finish line and see my amazing wife there, she is my inspiration, and she is also an amazing runner to.

Just Cuz Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:30:57, Place overall: 13, Place in age division: 3 | | Got to the packet pick up area around 8:20am and I got my bib and chip. Meet Rob and got to talking and got on the same bus to the start. Let me say that is was the coldest race that I have ever ran, there were 2 or 3 inches of snow down and the road was snow covered and ice packed. Plus the wind was blowing, but they did have a fire going to take the cold edge off and that felt great. I was very determined to make the most of the situation and just do the best I could as we all had the same conditions. I tried not to have any expectations at all and just run. The race was about to start and I wanted to get to the front of the line and not be behind alot of runners with all the ice on the road. We got started and had to take it very careful but was able to run an ok pace for the first mile and even better on the second mile. I got into areas on the road that they had put salt down on the road which made it much better; (slush) but better. Got to the mile 5 aid station and was handed a glass of water . When I went to take a drink the water was frozen and all I could do was giggle about it. I was able to just get alittle water out of it. The road cleared up and I was able to run without being to careful. I was running a good pace and felt very good and now had a tail wind which helped. Got to around mile 9 and looked over and saw the Century High School. I remember from the Pocatello Marathon that there was a hill just before it and was wondering if this course had the same thing. It did around mile 10, but wasn't quite as big as the Poc. Marathon. I slowed down but made good time going up it and got to the top and was glad to see the down hill after it. We now had a cold head wind from mile 11 on and rollers the rest of the way. The pace slowed but not to bad. Got to the finish and stopped my watch and it showed 1:30:57. I was so happy as I was not expecting to do that good with the conditions that were given to us. I am very happy with this run, as I just wanted to do my best and see where my fitness level is at. Finished 13th overall and 3rd in age group. Rob did an amazing job as he finished 2nd overall and just 20 sec behind the winner. GREAT JOB ROB!!!! I was very nice to finally meet you. 1-7:01 2-6:34 3-6:46 4-6:54 5-6:34 6-6:50 7-6:59 8-6:36 9-6:40 10-7:10 11-7:25 12-7:21 13-7:28 .10-.36 |

Well, I wanted to do my last 20 before RnR Vegas. But with the high wind things were not looking so good, set out running towards SRL and the wind was so hard at times it almost stopped me in my tracks. Got to around mile 4 and all I could think of was a Starbucks coffee, Subway sub, my recliner, blanket, college football, and a nap, now how can you run thinking of that. Finished up the loop and desided to call it good as the wind was blowing even harder. On the way home I got my coffee, sub, I am now in my chair with a blanket, surfing the Internet, college football is on and I am getting tired now. (life is good)
It has been a good week of running and am looking forward to next weeks runs. Hope everyone has a great weekend. |

AM Went for a 7am run this morning 3 mile Z1 run with a few MP p/u, temp not bad but is was windy and is to be very breezy for tonights run with temps at the start of 50 and finish at 41 not bad but am concerned about how windy it is going to be!
PM I had a great time running this race as it was so much different then the rest of them and I had to put some thought into this one as to how to dress for it and when to carb load and eat the morning of the race. Going into this race I had already told myself that I was going to probably have to walk to the start line. I know at 13.1 miles there was going to be a wall of runners and that the aid stations were going to be chaos for the first few of them, and that there was going to be some hills on the first 13 miles, but not extreme hills even though they said it was flat.
Got to the parking lot were we were suppost to park and the attendent did not let me in because I was not a registered guest , so I had to go down to the MGM's parking lot because it was bigger. I had to walk 1.5 miles to the start line. Found the gear check and checked my stuff in and went out to watch some of the concert and then headed to corral #1 for the start. I was talking with other runners and just trying to stay warm before the start as I had decided to over dress for the first of the race and when it cooled down I was already dressed for it and it worked out just right as around mile 7 it got dark and had cooled off and I was feeling just right. The plan was to try and run around a 7:25 to 7:30 pace for the first half and see what happens for the second half when I get there due to the merge with the half marathoners. Race got started and thing went well and was not alot of crowding or any of that as I was in corral #1 with some good runners and we all respected each other.
1 - 8:02 just a nice and easy start
2 - 7:31 wanted to wait for another mile before I was at this pace but had a tail wind and it just happend.
3 - 7:33 feel a bit warm due to the arm warmers and gloves
4 - 7:23
5 - 7:31 a slight hill here
6 - 7:31 It is starting to get dark now have portable lights set up and turned on.
7 - 7:27
8 - 7:33 This is the start of a 1.50 mile hill just at I thought there was going to be.
9 - 7:42 not alot of grade but long and steady and the only flat spot was when we crossed an intersection.
10 - 7:19 had a U-turn and went down the same way we came up it and wanted to make up for the time I lost going up the hill.
11 - 7:17 down hill
12 - 7:13 At this point there was a huge amount of spectators and must have gotten my adrenaline going.
13 - 7:17 Same as mile 12 only now we are meeting this huge wall of runners and was hopping that there was going to be the marathon lane that they talked about. There was but it was not roped off as it was just cones that said marathon to the left and half marathon to the right on every one of them.
14 - 16 - 7:19 I kept missing the sign as there some half marathon runners in the marathon lane and was dodging and weaving some what but not to bad as a majority stayed in there lane.
17 - 7:26 At this point there was alot of weaving around as they (half) just didn't care anymore, but I expected it and it did not bother me to bad as we all had the same problem. 18 - 7:35
19 - 7:39 We are now down around Freemont St. and it is very dark and I was not able to see my Garmin very well and I did not look at it as often and the problem that I was having was that I kept falling into another runners pace that was just alittle slower then mine and because it was dark and just harder to identify my pace as well.
20 - 7:36 more of the same
21 - 8:02 OK it happend, the legs got heavy - they didn't hurt but just got very heavy
22 - 8:00 Heavy legs maybe due to the slowing and speeding up from the past miles
23 - 7:46 Wanted to make an honest atempt at a 7:30ish pace
24 -26.35 miles - 8:29
Thats right 26.35 miles as I had talked to other marathon runners and they all had the same with in .02 miles and even one half said she had 13.35 miles and went to the face book today and heard others say the same. Just trying to hang on at this point! I had a great time at this race and it was alot of fun to run even though there is alot of runners that was not very happy with the way things went, and I am just guessing that they finished towards the end and alot of things were low or out on the course and in the finish area. I will want to run it again next year if it works to plan with other runs. WOW - I can't beleive it but I finishe 217 OA and 25 in AG, very happy about that. Next Stop -- BOSTON on April 16 |

Well I missed the group run this morning for a couple reasons and one was due to the ice on the sidewalks and roads. Went to the TM at the gym and wanted to get in a long run to end the year. I felt very good this morning and pace was nice, it was cool in the gym this morning that helped. Last week I did an 18 mile run so I was not sure if I wanted to do a 16 or a 20 and just told myself just get to 16 and go from there. Got to 16 and felt good and decided to run 20. I was not sure but thought I was like 2 or 3 miles from 3200 miles for the year and was just going to write it off for a challenge or goal for next year, but got on the blog and found out I just needed .13 miles to hit 3200 miles so I went back out for a .25 mile run. Weird huh!
What an amazing year of running I have had, and thank the LORD for giving me the strength to do what I love to do !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
