Had a very good run today, I was very comfortable and ran at an 8:47 min. pace for the first 10 miles and a 8:41 min pace to mile 11.5 and 8:30 min pace to 13.1 miles. I am training to run a marathon on the 6th of June in San Diego and am within 16 weeks of the run.  The problem that i am having right now is that i am out of town every other weekend and some weekends back to back and am not sure how to make the most of the days i have to train on the weekdays and to get my long run in also  ---- Need some advice please-----

Hi Marlin. Welcome to the blog. There's a handfull of bloggers from Idaho Falls including jtshad. Look him up. He's one of the top masters in the country. He can give you some good advice.

From jtshad on Thu, Feb 11, 2010 at 15:19:28 from 204.134.132.225

Welcome to the blog! Yet another IF'er.

Travel and training can be tough. But, you can run anywhere! To make the most of your training is kinda specific based on mileage goals and work/life impacts. Let me know more about your training routine and I can try to help with some thoughts.

As for me, I run two-a-days (once early morning, once at lunch) to allow for higher mileage, recovery and speed work. I also focus longer run on weekends (usually early morning to minimize family impacts) unless I can find time on some days off to get it in (depending on training cycle).

Burt, thanks for the props!

8 miles (1:10:48) ran out side this evening and was a little cold with a wind out of the north, and it did not help when at mile 5 a dog ran out of this farm house and bit me in the calf, lucky i had my cold weather pants and one other layer and it did not brake the skin, but it did tear my cold weather gear. Talking about taking you out of your run but worked through it and finished the 8.

Day off, long run Sunday am

Total Distance
16.00

Well i ran 16 miles this morning, WOW  I am very proud of my self, it is my longest run to date, things are getting much better.  I am here to say that you olny get out of it what you put into it,

Ran the Greenbelt this morning

The run started out a little hard as it took a couple miles to get my breathing lined out, not sure if it was the cold air starting out or not. but got better after that. The first two miles was at a 9:00 min. mile and then 3-10 mile was around 8:30 min mile give or take, 11-15 was around a 9:00 min mile, and the 16 mile was my hardest because i was feeling my back getting tired.

Ended up running 2:26:09  at a 9:09 pace. It was a great experience and know a little more what i need to work on. One is to get my back stronger so that it does not tire, Any Ideas my friends

Again thanks for all the help, and more is needed

My wife Mauri also ran 16 miles this morning and i am very proud of her also

Great job to you and Mauri for getting in a long run (and a great day to do it!). Keep this up and RnR will be lots of fun.

As for the back, do some stretching and some strengthening exerercises (like Supermans).

Awesome job (I am proud of you too!).

4 mile easy run outside at 4:30 am,  It was a neat morning to run, the fog made the farm lights look cool and as we live outside of town the city lights were neat also.

7 mile run after work, sun was out and just a little cool, was not sure how good the run was going to be because the legs were just a little tired at work today, but turned out ok--not great but ok.

From jtshad on Mon, Aug 02, 2010 at 18:33:54 from 204.134.132.225

No, I am not running the 1/2 this weekend as we will be camping.

A quick one line explantion: I am opening/extending my hips more on the backstroke to extend my stride. Once mastered I can combine with a solid toe off to improve my pace with the same relative effort as prior to the change.

I had a very good race this morning,  My HM goal for this year was 1:50:00.  I ran 1:48:49 on a very nice and cool morning.  I have been fighting an ITB for the past 3 weeks and it was in the back of my head if it was going to have a factor in this race?  Started out at a 9:00 min mile for the first 1 1/2 miles and felt really good  and picked up the pace to an 8:30 to 8:20  and held that for the next 9 1/2  miles and still felt very good and picked up mile 12 and 13 to a sub 8 min. pace to the finish.  Been fighting an ITB problem for the last 3 weeks and did not have a problem with it at all today.

It is nice to have a good positive run going into the Mesa Falls Marathon in 3 weeks!!!

Had a pretty good Masa Falls Marathon run,  The first 9 miles was on dirt road and was a little hard to keep the pace but was able to run at a 8:50 pace.  Was happy to get off the dirt road!  The next 4 miles was down hill and was around an 8:40 pace and was trying to get to the 13.1 mile make before the half started,   (to late) I got there and they had started it  around 1 soonner and i got there at 1:57:00 ish,  Had to deal with alot of runners and slowed me a great deal, but worked through it ok.  Got to the 3 mile hill and what a hill it was when it falls on mile 17 to 20,  Just keep going as best i could and got to the top.  Started the rollers and had spent alot just to get up that hill i was not able to get my pace back and finished the marathon in  4:08:16.  I am happy with it!!!!!  21 min. less then the San Diego Marathon in June

Great job on congrats on the huge PR! Yeah, that 9 miles on the dirt was tougher than I thought it would be!

You can turn this into a race report but editing your entry and flagging the button at the top of the data field that says race report and then enter the race info.

Great job!

7.50 miles  at 4:30 this morning---this morning i found out what has been giving my left ITB all this fuss for the last 1 1/2 mo.  I like to run the greenbelt in the morning, The water, trees, and ok lights,  and i have always (always) ran in the same direction that is clockwise around the greenbelt.  This morning i started out and again the IT issue again like always, so i stopped to try and work it out an stuff and it dawned on my as to the slope on the road and sidewalks.  Running clockwise the slope is from left to right  and that maybe that may be what is giving me all the trouble, and started to go the other way around  and now slope is from right to left to see if it made any differance.  DAMN----ITB issue gone, i still felt it slightly only because it was sore before i turned around,  payed attention to the amount of % the loop had if i was going clockwise and it was a better part of 70% from left to right.  The left leg was hitting the ground higher then the right witch was the cause of all the problems. The last 5 miles was like i was running again and the lst 2 at MP  (very nice) try running after work.

5 miles after work with no issues with the ITB, just a nice and easy run, a little warm but no issues

Sometimes it is simple things that can help. I hope that change of direction (the camber on the roads can do nasty things to the body...think that bad section of Mesa Falls around mile 20!) can help and keep it getting better.

Sorry I haven't called you back, I had a crazy week. I will call you today or tomorrow.

7 mile run on the Salmon river, a very nice run a little breeze but very nice.  There is alot of game down here and its the first time i have got to run by big horn sheep that was standing on the road   No Kidding  i just ran by them,  at first i stopped about 100 yards to see if they were going to move and they didn't so i just keep going,  how cool is that.  At the river i have drove by them and they have walked by me as i have been fishing but i have never got to run by them before,  a little nervous thinking that they were going to run after me!!!  How cool is that,  Not all runners can say that they ran by big horn sheep!!!!

From jtshad on Thu, Sep 16, 2010 at 10:01:51 from 204.134.132.225

But you need recovery runs, not everything can be at MP or you will burnout and/or get injured. Part of the sluggishness is the early time of day and perhaps the inproper eating...you MUST eat a good breakfast to refuel the muscles especially if you are running early morning. Recovery runs will make your quality runs that much more productive.

i finally got a sub 4:00 hr marathon  3:59:54  now how close was that!!  I am very happy,   the race was put together very well i thought, there were people at every turn and the aid stations were good.  The weather was nice and cool and the poeple were very nice

I decided to run with out my fuel belt on this run and am glad i tryed it, not having that extra weight was so nice.  At the start i fell into a very nice 9:05 pace from the start but was going to start out at a 9:30 pace but the 9:05 just felt good and just keep it going. Picked up the pace around mile16 to around an 8:50 pace an it was good an i felt fine and was able to  hold that up to around mile 21, You see i know from past marathons that i do start to cramp a bit around this time and this race was no differant then the rest except i had back up this time. I ordered this stuff from SG running store called wintercrest and stoped to rub some on the sore areas, and man did it help!!!

At this time i decided to just back off a little and get back down to around a 9:00 to a 9:10 pace and  did not want ot risk pushing the pace.  I was still passing people witch gave me alot of motivation.  At mile 23 i fell down to a 10:00 min. mile and was just trying to hang on to my time and was giving it everything i had. I was looking back a time or two to see runners were gainning on me but they had slowed also.  Looked at my GPS and knew it was going to be close, and the last .50 miles i gave it all i had,  finish line  WOW  1:59:54  So Happy!!!! My wife and i had a very fun time at this race and got the PR i was trying for all summer. Thanks Jeff S. for the advice and all the help you givin us.    We even seen runners from I.F. there also that we had run with in past races.

BTW, you can turn this into a race report by clicking on the button at the top of the daily entry page and it will allow you to show more specifics on the race and track it as a race for you.

I am here in Vegas,  I have been on my feet all of last night at the IMCA Mod race and has been alot of fun and still have 2 more nights of it.  Set out for a morning run and know my legs were heavy but need this. Started at Circus Circus and ran down the strip just past the MGM for 3 miles down and turned around for a total of 6 miles.  Alot of stairs and it was kinda nice-I had a great time on this run because there was alot to see and entertain me and have never ran the strip before.  I am glad i set out at 5:00 am because on the way back it was starting to get busy.  Want ot run it again on Sat. morning!!!!!

I had a very good run today, felt just fine and was happy with my pace as it did not feel hard at any time.  Was running at a 8:57 pace at the first 2 miles and moved up to an 8:40 pace the rest of the way,  Was no morning run but there will be on Fri. morning.

I will be adding my miles that i have logged on the Runners world web site on Sat that has amounted to 537 miles from the first of the year, before i was on this site!!  Just need to consolidate my millage for the year is all.

Total Distance
545.00

8 miles this morning in 1:10:34, sterted out at around 9:30 pace and just keep upping it every 1/4 mile for the first mile and then set it at an 8:49 pace and kept it there for the next 7 miles, Felt good never winded and HR at 137 or 138.  very nice run

Well as i was saying a couple of days ago that i have 537 miles on the runners world log that i am tired of thinking about and need to move them to this awsome site, i have ran them in the early months of this year before i was logging on this site. No not superman or anything just needed to combine them together.

That/s amazing! Actually - you can go back and add them to the calendar on the days that you ran them. Of course that is what only the anal people do...

From Rob Murphy on Mon, Nov 22, 2010 at 16:47:37 from 24.10.248.6

I joined the blog earlier this year, but started running seriously back in the 80s. I figure conservatively that I have about 45,000 miles I should go back and add. Hmmm...

From Jason McK on Mon, Nov 22, 2010 at 17:18:39 from 63.255.173.99

You should take the time, then you can track your progress! :)

From Marlin on Mon, Nov 22, 2010 at 20:49:43 from 75.174.23.35

Rob, this is miles that i have ran this year (NOT FLIPPIN MILES THAT I HAVE RAN BACK IN THE 80's) If you would like i have all the dates and miles still on the RW web and can make them all current on this blog. I have been a member since Feb of 09 and for what ever reason (not sure) i entered them on the other site and i just wanted to get them all together, I do not see the harm in that do you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I hope no one is offended. I was only joking, but I don't know if anyone else knew that...

15 miles on the TM at 6:00 am,  it was pretty cool to see alot of fellow runners at the gym this morning.  I know this mornings run was going to be a mental thing but was looking forward to it.

Started out at MP pace (8:57) and things were going very well and got to mile 10 and was feeling real good and decided to go to a MP goal pace a 8:49 pace for the last 5 miles.  Very nice workout this morning in a time of 2:13:35.   Pretty good for me and a big improvement from a year ago, just need to keep getting better and improving.  Weight training is paying off i think.

Awesome run my good friend! Nice job pushing the pace for this longer run and getting through the mental "dark spot" (i.e. treadmill) training. You rocked it this morning and were looking good.
