AF CANYON

Tibble fork up trail 041 to south on mud flats split. Tough going to the meadow with only one set of (old) tracks--snow very deep. AF Canyon overlook is spectacular and one of the best views of Timp. Back down mud flats to junction up to ridge trail and back down 041. At downhill split headed north on 040 to the north end of tibble. Fun day. Decided I MUST invest in some snowshoes. This hiking up to mid-thigh in snow is wearing me down.

I don't know about you, but I always find it's a fine line between doing something that's just difficult enough to build me up instead of, like you said, wearing me down. If snowshoes helps you get in the vert without killing yourself off, then that seems like a good investment. Great job on all of your adventure runs lately, too.

Anything at 5:45 min/mile pace sounds ouch. Nice! Sorry that you've been stuck on the TM so much lately.

From Kendall on Wed, Jan 15, 2014 at 09:53:08 from 208.187.252.10

Thanks Neasts! I really don't mind the treadmill even though i know i realize i lose fitness if on there too often. Doing a half marathon this weekend and part of more miles on the TM lately with the tempo/intervals is to get these tired legs moving more quickly.

Certainly rather be on the trail.

hey are you running ST george half?? I wanted to but can't cause I am in Vegas for Soccer tournament. Thought several times of driving back from vegas just to run it and then be back in time for daughter's game at 1230. Trying to let go of my racing mentality...Is Melissa runnning it?? I forgot to ask her.

From Kendall on Wed, Jan 15, 2014 at 13:33:07 from 208.187.252.10

LOL I came over here to your blog to tell you how fast your sister in law is running--seriously every time I see her at Gold's she is busting out another fast workout either uphill or sprints or tempo of some nature....and I laugh cause this looks similar to her workout...she was at a 9.0mph for quite some time!! and barely sweating and very nice form. WATCH OUT!!!

From Kendall on Wed, Jan 15, 2014 at 13:35:40 from 208.187.252.10

Not surprising. I thought I was going to die yesterday. Heavy legs from a longer weekend run coupled with 1/2 lb buffalo burger with fries right before I ran. Not a good combo! Felt much better at the tail end end working after working through some of that meal :)

From JulieC on Wed, Jan 15, 2014 at 13:41:08 from 63.224.118.103

I have done that...those runs are lard leg runs. Gotta not cave to the fries! And dang it i had someyesterday! But i for ed myself to get a half order and only eat half the order. More than once last year lard leg workouts were due to eating choices. But we like to think we deserve it right? :-)

From Neasts on Mon, Jan 20, 2014 at 21:19:28 from 71.213.44.145

That's a pretty dang honest course with some hills to not sneeze at. (I regularly sneeze at hills. Do you?) That is just flying fast, Kendall, especially considering all of the other mountain-goat, multiple-hour runs you regularly put in. Your having gone 3 flat on the big downhill BCC marathon makes this race even more interesting to me. I think it says good things about matching that marathon time on a much flatter course.

From Kendall on Tue, Jan 21, 2014 at 13:49:55 from 208.187.252.10

Thanks Julie & Neasts! I think it's a good thing to travel outside ones comfort zone. I don't mind the road but prefer the trails. It would be fun to take some time to focus on speed and really see what I can do at this old age but not at the expense of hanging up trail running.

I'm sorry that's been hanging on so long. I'm curious, did you get a flu shot? I seem to get the gamboo every year, but I got a shot last fall and haven't gotten sick. (Yes, that faint sound you hear is me knocking on wood.)

From Kendall on Thu, Feb 27, 2014 at 13:06:46 from 208.187.252.10

Didn't get a flu shot this year. I don't think this is the flu though. It's what everyone is referring to as "that cough." No stomach issues. Just that nagging/hacking cough. Tough to run through this thing. Keeping the mileage going but feel like i'm losing ground.

From Neasts on Thu, Feb 27, 2014 at 13:36:26 from 174.27.229.164

The flu shot is for those pesky respiratory viruses and not for the "stomach flu" or bug. My husband and Ty both didn't get the shot, but the rest of us did, and funny that those two are the only ones that spent a week with tissues wadded up their noses and another week or two hacking afterwards. It doesn't always work, but usually I'm glad I got the shot. :-)

You're doing a great job being creative about your miles, although you feel like crap.

From Kendall on Thu, Feb 27, 2014 at 14:21:47 from 208.187.252.10

Good to know. There are so many pros and cons out there on flu shots. I gave-in to "don't get a flu shot" hype that seems to be going around. Hard to know what to do anymore. I all I know is that I didn't get the flu shot this year and feel like crap--haven't been sick in years. Coincidence?

Here I was feeling bad for you not being able to get in a lot of miles...and then I find out you ran another 50K today. Great job! I'm really quite jealous.

ZION'S 50K

Worked late on Friday getting frequent updates from friends completing and competing in the Zion's 100K/100 miles races this past weekend. After finishing up at work around 8 pm, suffering from race envy all day long, I decided to get out of town and head down to Zion's for the 50K starting at 6 am Saturday.

Quickly throwing my gear into the truck I was on the road by 10 pm. Arrived at the finish area in Virgin, Ut, around 2 am, checked in the the RD and some of the 100 finishers, got a quick nap in the and settled in the front seat of my truck for some rest. After a restless couple of hours of sleep, up at 5 am, heading to the start.

Good to see some familiar faces at the starting line and at 6 am we were off. On three separate occasion within the first 3 miles I was leading the race--due to the entire lead group going off course three separate times. I think I was more prepared this time, watching more carefully for course markings, after having my own misfortunes at Monument Valley. Word to the wise...at a Matt Gunn (Ultra-Adventure) race PAY ATTENTION!

Had a lousy first 10-12 miles with two different bathroom stops and just feeling out of sorts. The Guacamole loop was not as much fun to race as it is to hike but nonetheless, I very much enjoyed the way-finding and hide-and-seek nature of this section searching for marking and the course.

On the way back down from the Guacamole aid station I started to hit my stride and things (finally) started clicking. I had a good second half, running the flats at a good pace and hammering up the Gooseberry Mesa passing a few runners. Ran the next downhill section really hard dropping into some low 6mm miles (with a couple of picture stops). Passed Ryan and Zac before the final stretch finishing in 5:20--13th overall.

Not my best day but a good second half and great training run. Loved the scenery and good company.

I really am jealous that you can drop everything like that and just...drive somewhere to race where your mind and heart already are. Someday maybe I'll be able to. Your race was super solid and fast regardless of your preparation. I'm glad we can live vicariously through your photos and that you put some of your big photos on here--I like the detail. :-)

Why does this race series intimidate me? Actually I wish I were healthy enough to try to run fast. It sounds divine. Are you unwound from your RD duties yet?

From Kendall on Wed, Apr 30, 2014 at 09:46:27 from 208.187.252.62

The Corner Canyon races are the antithesis of "racing." No pressure fun group, no awards and really no discussion on who won, or who finished where. Think of it as a no pressure (slight pressure) tempo run with a great group. The men's group typically has 4-5 really fast roadies. Depending upon who shows up I usually rank in the top 5-7 (in a field of perhaps 25-30 runners, men and women).

You would probably be the fastest woman on the course just about every week. Again it's not really about winning as it is running a good fast 6-10 miles.

No awards but a good raffle after each race. Very no-low pressure event and seeing some familiar faces each week. I always say "you gotta run anyway" might as well do it here. You should come!

Run on Trails--Corner Canyon Race Series #3

1 mile warm-up, 7.8 race course, 1,300 ft elevation gain.

#3 in the series. All the usual suspects showed up tonight. Taha, Mark (Hammond), although still missing Toby and Toly took the night off. Bigger group this evening with once again 3-4 really fast guys. Mark Hammond torched us all taking the win. My favorite CC course.

Start: Parking lot -- up Lower Corner Canyon Tr. -- right on Fire Road -- left up Clark's Tr. -- right on Ann's Tr. -- right down Potato Hill Tr. -- merge onto Bonneville Shoreline Tr. -- left onto Creek View Tr. -- down to Finish.

Steady 3+ mile climb to Ann's then scorching downhill. Just missed the downhill CR in a couple of sections by Toby (he's untouchable). Lots of bikes on the trail who refused to share (or yield) the trail. Several scrambles up the side of the hill and back on the trail at a < 6mm pace. I'm all about sharing so bikes don't have to stop but it when they hold their course expecting ME to yeild to them--gets me works up. Ran with the Pure Connects (min road shoe) tonight and absolutely loved them. Perfect trail for a very minimal shoe.

Another great night with a fun group.

From Kendall on Thu, May 22, 2014 at 13:04:41 from 208.187.252.62

Hey Neasts, radar =

A. having done the course several times know the general direction of the trail to begin with.

B. it's an intuitive thing having grown up playing in the mountains, following deer trails, running trails--way finding though senses not just eyes and head. I'm sure you're one of them who can do just that. Like a scout :)

Finding the right trail is like picking the perfect food for the perfect occasion. Reminds of this:

Nice run back via trail #173 (mud springs) to Pine Hollow parking lot. Beautiful meadows up to highly recommend it. 5 mile total. It would be 8 from the parking lot to the overlook and back. Wouldn't really recommend the climb to most as it really chewed my legs up.

No taper or real strategy for this one just using it as a long run. Early miles and climbs difficult as usual. Fell in behind some good guys for a few miles and kept a pretty good pace once on the fire road. After a quick stop, ran solo for the remainder of the race. Held a good steady climb up the green monster and Grove Creek section. Didn't feel particulary fast, just held a nice fast hiking pace.

Really started raining at Indian Springs and through the meadow section. Soaking wet from moisture on plants down low. Once on the downhill heading into Battle Creek, passed a few runners and started to hit my stride. Pretty muddy going into the Curly Springs area--nothing like previous years but slick nonetheless.

Hammered it hard coming down in to Dry Canyon and then from the rock pile to the finish, dropping into the 6's and 7's and passing a few more guys as well as a lot of the half marathoners. On a couple of occasions I heard "oh, not YOU again." It seems I'm getting a reputation for passing runners late in a race, particularly on the downhill sections.

Huge PR for me on this one by 25 minutes. Happy with the result although I really didn't feel much faster in any given section over the previous 3x I've done this one.

Great day with a lot of friends and trail folk.

Great weekend. Per usual many ups and downs including my first ever nap/melt-down taking an hour to sleep and recoup. Very pleased with 26:26 as I had written off any chance to go sub 30 with 40 miles to go.

Congratulations on getting this one done, Kendall. I hope you don't bait and switch on your write-up, this one sounds like it will be a good read.

A little unrelated: I was just looking through your arsenal of shoes above. I'm curious because in any brand running shoe I've ever had I've gotten at least 500 miles out of a pair and sometimes more. Are you wearing out your shoes that fast, or do the uppers or other parts give out before the rest of the shoe? Or do you just get sick of them?

From Kendall on Thu, Jun 26, 2014 at 19:12:34 from 208.187.252.62

Interesting on the shoes. Most of my Cascadias I'm getting good mileage. I just don't race with them over 300. The Cascadias can go well beyond 500 miles and I keep most of them. Some of the others with lower mileage are more experimental and just for messing around.

That report was a fantastic read, with awesome pictures, an inspirational coming back story, and a lesson to be grateful. Congrats on beating your race goal! I look forward to reading your reports for the next three 100's. This is amazing stuff, Kendall!

I finished. Not exactly the time and day I was looking for but I am offically a Hardrocker. Finishing Hardrock meant the world to me. Things fell apart going over Oscar's Pass (13K) coming into Telluride (mile 27). The short of it is that I did a full reset--new goals, new outlook and slugged it out. Hardest thing I've ever done.

Cool report. Enjoyed the scenery... I guess if you are going to spend that much time outside, it might as well be in the San Juans, one of the most beautiful mtn ranges on the planet.

From Kendall on Tue, Jul 22, 2014 at 12:32:04 from 208.187.252.62

Thanks Bob! It IS certainly "off the charts." Something about the cumulative effect of going high (repeatedly) that put me down.

@Jake: No doubt. The scenery was spectacular. Incredible mountain range. Have never run a 100 going more than 28 hours. This was new territory. Huge respect for those out there for that amount of time.

They are hard on my body and I'm just not willing to keep pounding on it until I feel fresh. I hope you are doing the same...Hardrock was in a league of difficulty all by itself. Hopefully we'll see you out on some runs soon. I feel like it should still be spring...

Ha!...thanks Tom. That's right, the Bear completed my bid for the Rocky Mountain Slam. Beyond just an incredible experience in some of the most amazing backcountry locations, I learned a lot about what I'm capable of in terms of the 100 mile distance. I realize I'm not built for the back-to-back 100's (at least competitively--at my level). I can finish them but prefer doing them WELL! My body was tired. In the future, I'll most likely pull back to one maybe two hundreds per year, focus on one big race with a sprinkling of 50's and 50K's.

Hey Tom. 3 of us completed the slam. All local Utah guys. Not a particularly competitive group but fortunate to stay healthy and complete all of those--two of which were 3 wks apart. Enjoying gearing down and just having fun at the moment. Interesting how more racing = fewer miles. My yearly miles are 400 off last year's pace with 3 more 100's. Taper going into race, recovery after race. I miss just going out and having fun. Going to enjoy the off-season perhaps with a small one here or there.

Snow Canyon Half

Not very high expectations after a big summer of racing and completing the Rocky Mountain Slam. I feel like I'm dragging thick mountain legs and have lost some speed. Suffering from fatigue but had a good few weeks off of racing.

With an aided course, even with low expectations I thought I might grab a PR since I've only ever run an honest half marathon course St. George (Jan.) at 1:27:22.

Good gradual uphill start (I got a bit annoyed having to weave around several runners who had no business being that far up front that early--I need to chill). 6:46, 6:53, 6:41 for the first three. I felt good. I knew I needed to be in the sub 6:40 range for a PR so the 6:53 concerned me a bit. Dropping into the canyon I dropped a 6:13, 6:02, 6:10. 6:02!! Whoops. I thought how ridiculous that would look on the blog....6:53, 6:02. So many of the elites seem to keep their splits within seconds of each other and I'm all over the place. With a good DH section though, I took full-advantage and hammered it...and then paid for it.

Next three miles at the bottom of and coming out of the canyon were 6:36, 6:57, 6:46--fighting a stiff head-wind.

Back on the streets and really pushing into the wind I could only muster 6:50, 7:03, 6:56 for the next 3 miles. I was losing my PR and stuggling to keep a good pace. I've become better at zero'ing in on and going to my "un"-happy place, really focusing on a quick turn-over and pushing the pace. My legs were shot.

I managed to stay focused and push the pace a bit, passing quite a few runners in the last mile and ending up with a 6:36 mile twelve finishing at 1:27:33--11 seconds off my PR. Happy to win my AD with a really cool trophy and a neat backpack for finishing top 50.

Wish I could have and probably should have got a PR on that course but it just wasn't meant to be. Good times down in St. George and a nice hike to Angel's Landing on Sunday.

2 mile warm-up--beautiful sunrise/ 1 mile cool-down around track.
